"Game century Among fans the time period is known as the glory days of New York City basketball even though it ended without a championship teams feared playing Patrick Ewing Charles Oakley and John stark not just because they were good but the team would also physically fight other players on the court Chris herring is the author of the new book blood in the garden the flagrant history of the 1990s New York Knicks and it joins us now by Skype to talk about how this Gritty era of the Knicks changed basketball for the entire NBA Chris good morning Good morning How are you I'm doing well You write about the team being a little rough around the edges I think I know what you mean but please explain that I think a little might be putting it too mildly sometimes with them A team that just was extraordinarily physical and that was by design Pat Riley came in and coached the team starting in 1991 and he was coming off of an era where he coached the Lakers to four championships with the really smooth uptempo offensive attack The Knicks were not a team that was going to be designed like that because they didn't have that much skill on offense They had Patrick Ewing and then there was just kind of everybody else And so Pat Riley's view of it was that our best opportunity to win with this group that we have with the lack of offense that we have is really to lean in to the big bodies we have on defense and the physical nature of how we can play defense kind of in the vein of those Detroit Pistons teams from the late 80s the bad boys that won two championships So they leaned into that Pat Riley literally gave them orders essentially to knock players to the floor including Michael Jordan and the playoffs in 1992 And to foul relentlessly in the early stages of games knocked them down do not help them up put in intimidation factor into it And that they could win games in part by doing that How did Riley enforce that type of physicality Sometimes he dictated it and told them to do it There were other times that he did it through messaging For instance he one time slid into the locker room for a pregame talk while wearing baseball spikes and told them to do whatever they were going to do with their spikes high meaning you know slide into an opponent aggressively and if you happen to take them out or hurt them while doing it the same way you would the hard baseball slide then so be it Oh my goodness So the next became these flagrant foul trendsetters How did the NBA respond to this trend The NBA was not the biggest fan of it quite frankly They essentially were worried that one someone would get really hurt by them playing the style And the Knicks were definitely at risk of hurting people at times they did Kenny Anderson broke his wrist on a play like this where you know John stark's just kind of took him out of the air So the league very quickly within a year or two started trying to root out what the Knicks were doing and make illegal with the Knicks we're doing In terms of changing the flagrant bowel rules which Charles Oakley was probably the key reason for that he had more flagrant vows in one season 1993 than 15 other teams did By himself they started changing the way the hand check rules operated and making that illegal they started making it illegal to come off the bench and fight The NBA ever looked at the Knicks as this hardcore team very very physical and were Nick's players right to think that the league had it out for them I wouldn't necessarily say had it out but I do think that there was something to be said for the fact that they were very very clear about the fact that they did not want this specifically to exist in the way it did I'll put it this way When they got rid of hand checking Derek Harper was the guy shown on the videos that the league was passing around to everyone about what would no longer be allowed He was the guy featured for the first two minutes of that video The knick starting point guard So there were a lot of things about that era that were being rooted out that were the Knicks were poster children So was the league out to get them I'm not sure but certainly they were the team that everybody thought of with a lot of these rules changes because the next word at the forefront of all that And then by then the next had developed some kind of a reputation for being a so physical but did the win or fight mentality ultimately lead to the Knicks downfall I think you could argue that it did for sure And what happened in 1997 once the league had said that you're not allowed to come off the bench for these altercations anymore and participate in a fight the Knicks had a brawl basically or they were close to having a brawl with the Miami Heat in 97 They were in the middle of a playoff series that they were winning dominating quite frankly And then because there was that fight that happened and the next players came storming off the bench to kind of stick up for their guy and their teammate What ended up happening is that 5 players from the next got suspended and it was basically four of their best players Larry Johnson John stark's Allen Houston and even Patrick Ewing came wandering off the bench by a few steps and the league basically held the Knicks feet to the fire in a way that the Knicks felt was inappropriate And the league their rule was very clear If you leave the bench you're going to get suspended And it stemmed from those years 93 and 94 So that killed their chances of really advancing in the playoffs in a year where they thought they had a very decent chance to knock off the bulls during the Jordan year So it did really come back to haunt them in 1997 yes Chris herring is a senior writer at sports illustrator and is the author of the new book blood "I just saw a disturbing video on social media. LeBron who's I don't know. Pay. What do you think He's paid per second in the MBA producer? Mike, Can you go with that? What do you think? LeBron salary per second of floor time in the embassy? I don't know. Maybe a couple 100 bucks. Maybe a couple 1000. I don't know. I really don't know what LeBron makes. I don't watch the MBA anymore. Since they decided woke ism was the way to go and I decided it wasn't But LeBron, I guess the playoffs we're going on. Is that right? Is it the playoffs? I really I have stopped watching. After Patrick Ewing retired with the next years ago and Get the way this is LeBron makes $162 per second per second. Listen, Life has been good. Thanks to your generosity and listening to my show. I'm telling you, I don't make no $162 a second. No way. I don't have to do that. But it's not anywhere close to that. 162 was second. Hold on. Let's put a little timer on this show right here. We have got a timer. Stopwatch. Here we go. For those of you watching a vaccination at home. One. You. There we go. LeBron just made hundreds five seconds. This guy's gonna be close to $1000 to So why am I bringing this up? Because last night? Apparently, the Lakers are playing the Phoenix Suns, and they got their butts were pretty bad. Is that right again? I'll follow sports and LeBron who plays for the Lakers. He was like, Yeah, I'm not going to stay to the end of the game. Just gonna go to the locker room and disappear. Wow. Wow. I wonder he was going to the locker room to make a comment about the Chinese Communist Party torturing people. Of course not. He's probably making a comment about how should we shouldn't talk about the Chinese Communist Party torturing people?

"Tell you right now. Much as i love patrick ewing as much as i love america's coach doing as much as i love my georgetown. Hoyas i think. I pretty much Solidify that if you listen to me if you listen to my podcast especially the last podcast. That you know i am a devotee. I am a cult member. Follower of the georgetown holiest basketball program with the reason but even i had to be realistic to know that their chances against colorado too good not very good still remember. This is a team that had to win the big east tournament to get to the ncaa tournament so Not i mean. I don't know expectations. i don't know. I didn't think they'd get past villanova so i don't know i don't know everything right now is gravy with georgetown. So you know what if they beat. Colorado a man. I'll be dancing in the street. March Madness Arrives: 68-Team Field Revealed

"Aa tournament. We'll be missing some notable teams sierras. We've been discussing today. Regulars taki duke and louisville did not make the field sixty eight this year. It's the first time since nineteen seventy six at all. Three schools have missed the tournament in the same year. Now louisville's a chance to make it if a team currently in the field fails to make cope with protocol. But obviously that's that's gonna be an outlier situation for them making it like they still didn't actually tournaments i. I'm very excited for the tournament. I love march madness and verse weekends. the best. it's the best friday saturday now. This year. It's friday saturday sunday. Money out there doing switched it up a little bit where it starts later. And they're all playing in in the same place as well. Obviously kobe changed. The first weekend is by far and away the best and now he's loved that there's one one team that makes a run everyone gets the learn about them and their school and their players. And i'm really excited for georgetown yuccas. Patrick ewing hit has not gone great so far and then they had a great tournament and the all. This is interesting. "It's ncaa tournament time we had championship. Week was absolutely spectacular. You had a championship game. That wasn't so spectacular in america conference by the big twelve was tremendous big. Ted was tremendous. Because you know what those two leagues are tremendous all season. Long games aren't games. they're events the acc was anti climactic but great for josh passenger and the greatest shield in the history of life. The big east to me was phenomenal. I mean patrick ewing. Not only does he no longer needed credential again but he got into madison square garden and walked away with four games in four days and his team played like an old vintage georgetown team. Pac twelve stolen a bid which was really cool. Wayne tinkle's got it was who was on the hot seat. It was so cool is good coach. A good person attack boil. Who's another great guy still going tournament. So i thought championship week was absolutely spectacular. Your take oh. I thought it was great. I look. I'm gonna tell you houston's legit at chance due to their games including the championship game in the ac. That is a legitimate. I was happy that drake dot in. I was happy that twenty five and four guy in. I thought that was terrific. I love the fact that the drew brothers are in the tournament. The demolishing of creighton shocked the living in. Hell on me. And says i'm telling you i like when you lose guys mclaughlin aquino record and next thing you know man. What are you doing better. The next year matt pain and getting himself in the top four seeds after losing two guys eastern and harms but overawe a look championship. Week was the sec. Tournament was off the charts with the championship. Game and college basketball delivers it delivers every damn nights. Let's go to the west ready. Let's do it all right now. Let's do this number one seat. I was thinking what games in the upper half of the west. Are you looking forward to see. I wanna see what. Oklahoma can do eight nine game now. Maybe it doesn't matter because you're gonna play gonzaga. But i think this i think if you're gonna play along krueger team whether you're konso martyn missouri. Who has struggled or whether you're gonzaga. You know you're going to play a very very good basketball team. And i had them earlier in the year they can shoot it. They defend it. They play hard. I don't think they're overly talented and the kid to get something done but lon kruger is so good at dictating pace. That if i'm sitting here with gonzaga i wanna lesser coach in my second round game assuming that they win. What do you got. Well you know i actually. I think missouri can win that game. A jeremiah tells me he's going to have to go out guard on out on a primitive 'cause they're playing brady at the five and they've run them all over the place on the other side though rate mattis gutter guard that dude on the block to is become a good player control martin's team when they're older and more mature and her physical they are talking tournament. Think about what he did tennessee. So you know this is going to be really good game because you've got a tough physical team in missouri. You've got a team that attacks match ups plays almost four guards in oklahoma. I'm actually leaning towards missouri in this match up. Well you're going to be wrong and that's okay you can be. It's okay. I can be wrong. It will be the first time won't be the last time and you know that's right. I don't have either. We'll on from barry. I but i touched on that but also got to say tony bennett said that most of his team is in quarantine south. Now i don't know about you but that preston kid that plays at ohio university. Ooh yeah he can go and all of a sudden. You're talking about a team that wait a second. I know i know. Virginia's good. I know virginia came on. I know they ended up with the one seat in the acc tournament. But seth you're playing against a hot as hell ohio university team. A team led by jeff bowls. Who frankly he's the perga- guide ohio you because he loves ohio you. He played there with the with the shock of the mac. But when you're playing a team in quarantine sat that tells me they're not practicing. That tells me this is gonna be a hats. This'll be a good game regardless.

"That is that I would rather have been at Tom Brady proved to me this year that it didn't matter if you had the second best quarterback in football when there's a generational talent out there. You just can't win and vote. Either you go and get your heart broken for 20 years like like Yup. Packers have done all these teams or or and just suck it up. It's like having Patrick Ewing when Jordan's in the game. And because the Bears are unable to figure out that generational talent with regards to intelligence. I think we missed on the next guy. I think the Patrick Mahomes is gonna be feeding people for 20 years. Chicken. That's it. That's an excellent point. And I think it goes this far. Aziz. You can to explain why the Bears as an organization. Truly believe in matinee because they think I'm not saying they're right. But Sylvie, check me if I'm wrong. They think they now have a guy that can help determine how smart the quarterback needs to be. He's the answer that they didn't have in the room before. In their opinion, the same guy who's neglected the run, Harper same guy who who can't call the place and has to pass it off to build laser. The same guy who wanted Nick Foles to come in and win the job right away. The same guy who didn't coach mic'd Robiskie and coach to his strengths. All of those things all of those things exist on that Maggie's record and it is still Obvious to anybody looking The Bears is an organization believe him to be smart enough to determine how smart the quarterback needs to be the next quarterback. He is right and he's going to be very, very active. There is one name. Okay, There's one name that we have not mentioned in weeks about this. About a possible free agent. We have talked about the Shawn Watson is many people point out. We have talked now about Matthew Stafford. We've even talked about Aaron Rodgers. But there is another free agent. "Brian Windhorst you have spent I think the last decade of your life trying to establish successfully establishing by the way that you are a lot more than the Lebron guy after knowing and covering him longer than any other human being in our business dating back to your high school days in Akron and then even through the time you famously up and moved to Miami to cover him there. So I just want to begin by apologising for pulling you back into the orbit of the same son we've been worshiping for now seventeen years well I wouldn't be here but for Lebron I, extraordinarily fortunate to meet him when He. Was Fourteen years old his move to Miami in open the door for me to come to ESPN. So I, Oh, Lebron immensely, and while all of us want to spread our wings as we get older certainly would never shy away from or or tire from looking at this this guy because he's been influential character in my life and thankfully and influential character in the history of the NBA. Yeah. That was incredibly well said but now it's time to get super messy because in this case in this series where there are so many different interesting storylines and angles, it does feel like past might be prologue. I want to go back ten years now. It is July ninth, two, thousand and ten and Lebron James is introduced to heat fans for the first time along with Dwayne Wade and Chris. Bosh introduced to the NBA really for the first time as this big three and Lebron is asked about his plan for winning championships in Miami. Three kings came down here to win championships. Not One championship to Lebron. Tell us about that not too on. Now. Now by. Not. Fix. So at that moment. How did the Miami Heat See Lebron era playing out? Pat Riley thought that that was. The Greatest Dynasty team that he had ever been able to be a part of. Better than magic and Kareem and James Worthy. Better. Than Shack and Dwayne Wade better than the hopeful teams that he had with the next with Patrick Ewing and Allan Houston John starks. He thought this was one of the greatest teams in the history of the NBA. He saw a horizon for a decade where they would be in the finals year after year after year and maybe they wouldn't win it every year and maybe they wouldn't win five six or seven Lebron said, but they would rack up. It was going to be his sunset team. He was going to ride this dynasty out and then go into the sunset and it was an incredible for years. It was one of the most prolific four year runs in the history of the NBA, but it wasn't that dynasty and Pat. Riley, has never one hundred percent ever gotten over.

"But penny spent those years before getting the Memphis job, developed coaching the players he would recruit developing relationships with prospects and people who influenced prospects and so. So Memphis new the day that it hired him. That, yes, it was a gamble on some level. But that he was going to bring James wise. He's gonna bring DJ Jeffrey's and basically the other Memphis kiddie wanted now did they know he could go out and get precious. Chew and boogie Ellis and all this other stuff done. No, I don't think I knew that. But you knew he was going to be able to get a certain level of prospect from a certain part of the country, the Memphis, part of the country and that was an obvious advantage that he had from the minute. He was hired simply put John Howard does not have that advantage. He does not have grassroots connections, far as I know. And so that's all stuff that will have to be established. And it is the main thing that makes this different than what Memphis did, what Michigan did today is not what Memphis did last year. What Michigan today? If you're looking for the comparison, is what Georgetown did when it higher Patrick Ewing? Yeah. That's I do think, yes. That is that is a closer comparison. John Howard does have just his sons are both. They've been around the grassroots circuit for a little while now. So he has area with that with territories didn't work. It wasn't working in that space, but familiar with that, and then ask you asked we record this podcast, the USA basketball, you sixteen trials are happening in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, and John Howard is there like he's a part of that. So he's not completely foreign to all of this, but what you mentioned with Ewing and penny maybe Molin although he's gone. Now, what I do think is that all of these NBA stars will be clumped together just to compare one versus the other. How did how they didn't do. It's, it's, it's hitting us more often than not the NBA player that takes on the college coaching job flames up, particularly when that said, coach is taking it on. For the first time and hasn't had a chance to build up his career the way that Tony Bennett cut his teeth as an assistant, and got the Washington state, and then obviously goes on to win the national championship. But I think Howard's got some interesting potential. The key thing here is for Michigan. You mentioned the timing. It was bad, timing. Weirdly because may actually gives you the most time to really just take a breath. And conduct the kind of search you wanna conduct but also guys have taken other jobs. Everyone's usually locked into all this stuff. So you had Cooley allow Jordan was given a serious. Look, I was told Luke Yock, which was given a look from in-house, and it's actually says something real quick on loopy college this two years ago. He was an assistant. Nobody knew it. Illinois state and four years ago. He was coaching high school basketball and Illinois. And for him to have made the final two sis-, two things. Yes, it's a state on where everyone else was in the industry. But also, this is a guy who beeline entrusted entirely with his defense, and that was a big reason why mission got where it was last season..

"New York Knicks Patrick Ewing. You're moving onto the next round. Here is the draft party in New York. I think they're going to be happy guys. Let me see what do you think when it flashes to the screen? I'm guessing happy. Kevin what you're with you back ESPN radio studios. NBA countdown presented by straight talk wireless chaos. Utter chaos. And I want to go to the Pennzoil performance on ESPN analyst Carolina now joins us as you watch this carrot on full this. Well, and you heard it the jumps the Lakers the grizzlies and the New Orleans pelicans, the only team out of the form that had the chits and the best odds that stays is the New York Knicks your reaction. Believable. I mean, you think about how many ramifications Kevin that come out of this draft lottery. When we're talking about the ten Anthony Davis. We're talking about the Lakers, and what they will be able to do in free agency or potentially via trade, and all of these factors are still on the table, not to mention as where the best place to play in the NBA still has a shot at perhaps one of the most exciting prospect that the league has seen in the last decade. We are inside or Grainger studios. Grainger's. Got your back when it comes to the safety industrial supplies healthcare facility running get what you need when you need it at Grainger dot com. The NBA conspiracy. Theorist however, ally nineteen eighty five at the frozen envelope. They're going to be out in full force Carol at the late with the Lakers the Knicks sitting there as well. Wow. It's gonna be fascinating. And you you could you could see the disappointment on you know, some of the other franchises faces. Whether it was Phoenix or Cleveland or Chicago. I mean, New York was really the only franchise not fato four that was able to dodge moving down drafts. And to stay up in that top for now where they land, you know, we'll we'll wait and see. But this is remarkable. I mean when you look at but ten surely all of the destinations whether it's Memphis New Orleans New York in Los Angeles Orleans getting getting a top pick or getting the number one pick to be able to maybe enticing Davis to say to stay Los Angeles to further burnished, a young talent. They have on the roster to maybe entice a free agent to come in or to go out and get a trade for one and have another free agent. Come in, certainly Memphis. They're trying to rebuild a rebel to hold onto their lottery pick this year. And then you look at the Knicks. And we know what it would mean to be able to have a head. Blinding player at the garden. So this could break in one of four ways. And I think they're all fascinating. We're gonna head back to Chicago in a matter of moments. Let's give you the order of selections right now Boston, which is the shock of mental pick up. Go fourteenth. Miami will go thirteenth Charlotte in Minnesota twelve and eleven with Minnesota going at eleven that meant the Lakers moved up, then it's Atlanta than it is Washington, then -lanta again, the pick comes from the Dallas Mavericks, then Chicago, then Phoenix Inc. Then at number five, it is Cleveland, and as they mentioned Cleveland Phoenix in Chicago. They were three teams out of the four that had the best of the bowls are twelve and a half percent Phoenix in Cleveland. The retired of the next fourteen percent. I guess I mean, this is all done by lottery balls in by ping pong balls. Excuse me in the back of a room. But this new way system if we get this every is pretty cool. I think it is. I mean, it certainly adds the certainty it takes away some of the value as far as the teams that were losing right tanking that was going on at flattens it out. Now. I don't know if these from Chicago or are going to be Orlando. We're going to be saying. Yeah, this works. You know, they might have a different story. But certainly from a from an entertainment standpoint, this has been a blast. And I can't wait to see the top or pick where you you gave through a little bit of a rundown of where you think the best place resigned on to go is in your mind, where do you actually want to see him? Well, you know, I always I feel like sometimes you're better off going to a good team. And and certainly you look at what the what the Lakers have been able to do. I don't think it would be horrible for science to potentially go to Los Angeles. Now, they might trade him. I think there are certain teams he could go to where the it's more likely that they trade him. I don't think that that happens in New York. I don't think that that happens in Memphis or in New Orleans, but you know, the Lakers, I don't know that's a wild card because of their mantra that kind of win now with LeBron James and the fold for three more seasons. Taras by we wanna head back to Chicago. It's either the Lakers the Knicks the grizzlies or the pelicans who gets the number one, selection, we will head back to Kogyo in a matter of moments with ESPN NBA deputy Commissioner Mark Tatum. Rachel Nichols agent. Arouse ski are anchoring our coverage on ESPN television, again, the Knicks Lakers Memphis in New Orleans here. Is martinez. The final four let's bring in Commissioner. Mark Tatum to steal this man's fade out there. Thanks again. Rachel. The fourth pick in the two thousand nineteen.

"And I think he thought I was going to squirm a little bit. I said I said, I would take chemo over you. And he goes, yeah. That's a good choice. I don't blame you. And then that was that was it then after that when we had him on a couple of times. And you know, you hear the laughter, and I just don't think you heard the laughter with Patrick Ewing because he grew up in a very difficult environment. In Boston took a lot of heat took a lot of stuff from fans in his hometown. Even in college in Georgetown, didn't help matters because they sort of cordoned them off. And then it was us against the world. And you know, but that was John Thompsons coaching strategy there, and it and it worked because people were like, oh my God. Georgetown Georgetown's coming to town. It was just a different field. I don't remember team that had that kind of presence like that intimidation. And it's not like UNLV and not about Michigan because Michigan with a fab five and UNLV with the running rebels. It was different. They were just a cold group. Georgetown was like oh bleep like, they're they're mysterious. And there was a presence about them that I just can't remember any other team that had that you had a six ten coach yet a seven foot star. You had Michael Graham, he bald headed guy looked like he was, you know, a guy at the door a balancer. I mean there there were serious. They were serious when when you saw Georgetown's they go my God. How do we going to beat these guys? Yup. You said something yesterday that LeBron James might be the most critiqued athlete of our generation. Well, if you go back a generation, Patrick Ewing headed harder. He didn't have digital people commenting on him on social media. He had people yelling stuff to him from the stands. And he's told us what was yelled him yet. He described it being a rookie on his poster night and people ripping them up in front of them. Lebron never had stuff like that. He has he has the digital bullying. But he I don't know if he had what Ewing had back in the day. And I think the fans in Boston are probably the reason why I didn't stay in Boston because they were throwing banana peels on the floor. He's in high school, and they were doing that too. And I think he wanted to get out of Boston and could have gone to Boston call imagine if you'd gone to Boston College changing Boston College fortunes. But you know, he wanted to get out of town..

"What about all the cards that I have garbage garbage ninety ninety two million garbage. One of those garbage because it was too much supply not enough demand. Right. So, you know, I mean, look, you maybe were smart and bought eighty six eighty seven flare basketball that has all the rookies in it, and that's an incredible set. But what most people have eighty seven tops baseball early upper deck all that stuff for the most part that is not strong. What strong is pre nineteen eighty graded to these companies Beckett PSA and the new stuff like the one of one Jonah says that are like ten thousand like LeBron rookies Kobe rookies, they're trading. It about a thousand piece rated well right now or five thousand dollars cards in three years. So I'm excited. I'm glad I'm glad I'm bringing it up here because I'll be happy to look at this clip in three years Chuck here in the rich Eisen show. So the card will be worth more when the Knicks don't get him because Dolan's karma's so terrible. Or what have you because I know you've heard because your professional Patrick Ewing. Yes. One of the all time most underrated players of all time list is a sports show. Let's. Listen, I'm an enormous. Knicks fantas also forty three I lived through that golden era. But if you're over Neil hardcore basketball knowledgeable fan, we also know is John Starks. Anthony, Mason and Charles Barkley are overrated. They're amazing the best. But the Patrick Ewing is extremely underrated. Because I don't think people actually understand what he was surrounded by. I really believe that. So wait a minute. His his knick's good one of my favorites of all time here mind too. Like, I want to be my best friend like, you know, unfortunately is best friends with Michael Jordan, which. But right. I think are very solid players like really good players. But not as good as people think because they were so tough and awesome in RAD. And I believe that Patrick Ewing is one of the all-time underrated players because of the context of what surrounded him great air for centers with David Robinson and Akim lodge one. But. David robinson. Dave Robinson one hundred percent. I mean that I'm I'm shocked that people don't understand that. I mean, I think he's way better. He just didn't he just that's knick fan. I really honestly I mean, look I didn't say team. My Knicks fan is the next sentence. He's better than one. That's my nickname. My non Knicks fan them is Petric is better than David Robinson guys. He just is like I test. I lived and I watched a lot of the Robinson. Like, I don't know. He was he was really really the nice solid a real player pelicans better. So you're saying the fact that Patrick Ewing because I'm trying to bring this full circle is the Patrick Ewing real quick David Robinson, the west was wack. It was the reverse. Right MVP the league. I don't give a crap the league is not a variable. That is super exciting to the bait. It's a really like that's a really, you know, this too smart for that statement. MVP the league, Michael Jordan. I hate them with my whole heart should have been MVP every year. Like LeBron be every year. They do it on timing. Cadence. Like, there's so many variables MVP is a joke. That year should be check every year or should have been Phil Jackson every year. Look jackson. All time. Also, what you remember? Time overrated coach Bill ballot. Check men want to talk about somebody. I dislike all time. Phil Jackson enough of Phil Jackson show me one. Phil Bella checks greatest thing that ever happened. Bill. L shake was Matt castle. The greatest thing that ever happened to Bilbao checks career was Brady being out for that year. The problem for Phillies show me like Larry Brown is way. Better. Coach Phil Jackson. Of love and takes from Gary. You don't believe that? I can totally understand what you're saying. But you be the one season of data. We're eating have a top single player in the league. And then we can have at least a conversation. Have you noticed? Nobody's going to disagree on emotional. You can't be judged. The single best player in the league every time in your title career. Could you notice Chris Gary vein Chuck has gone on this hot take role? Although I'm not saying that you don't believe it ever since. I brought up how Dolan's. Getting to the Knicks because the ping pong balls, rebounding. Started with Ewing that you in going there. Ewing, bring it home. Is going to confident brings on home. I'm confident the Rangers moved up aggressively draft. It's an MS guys when the Knicks rollout Durant and Kyrie and Zion. And the defense of force known as Mitchell Robinson and the evolution of Kevin Knox as he chores. Guys. Nirvana is coming to the garden by guy. I'm so excited for the next decade of my life. I cannot believe the great joy that I'm about to have still having a really hard time with you thinking Patrick Ewing's better than David Robinson. No problem. I understand you could make this argument. Was never higher than fifth in MVP voting. I'm my mind. MPP variable sports debate. It is a ludicrous. Data point is not MVP is also remember most important thirty eight thirty eight thirty eight. That's like right on the cusp. Like, look, I test matters rich actually help us. You're the oldest statement statesman here. Do you believe that it's hard? I really believe this. It's hard when you didn't have tesla. Really having a conversation. If we're really having a fun debate not for stick. I do believe not having test data is an issue. Like, if you don't have statea, I don't know anything about Oscar, Robert like, I don't have high test understand like, I I would love to know more about Dr J for real I believe and this is like every debate right Babe Ruth. I can tell you queuing clown. David Robinson, one on one in their career in for real for real like if you test their matchups, I'm telling you. He was a better player on I test. He just was I. Time not saying this just because he's chest. New York City. I'm not right. I know, you know, I'm right? I mean until David Robinson got him Dunkin. Got Tim Duncan was nothing. It was not even a debate. It wasn't even debate. And you guys Knicks homers. What I'm going to let you guys get a pass. No, no, no. That's that's. Greece is different. But I remember I do remember again Ewing. Ewing, just told you John stocks Oakley. Anthony Mason are grossly overrated with that on your. I have no sitting it's hard for you to stand on. A Knicks Homer when I just sat here and said three all time emotional Knicks are overrated. I said that and you come back at me and saying, but they're not considered great Knicks of all time. No, no, Charles. Oh. On Charles, Oakley is viewed as he's he's not on the mount Rushmore. And he he's he's viewed as an all time. Great Nick in my mind. Okay. Rush. No, no. No, no. But but just that we do need to we do need to just remember some of the stuff, and I will say this as a knick fan before James Dolan beat it out of me. Okay. That Charles Smith was viewed as the great final piece for him. I thought it was. Xavier mccall's. Katie X men was one of them to save your McDaniel Charles Smith. Later, but he was viewed as somebody that was a savior to the Knicks. I'm talking about people that were saviors, but in terms of the Ewing era, he didn't have those pieces. He didn't have the inhabits Pippen. He didn't have his Dunkin. David Robinson was lucky enough to nothing in his life. He didn't win that championship. Let's just be very honest here. If you think David Robinson has a ring you also think BJ Armstrong has rings. You you're really going to we can have this. What I'm saying? Let me start over. There's a singular person that wins ring in my Gary v took one of one mind in the NBA, there's a singular person. And so David Robinson has euro rings in my mind. He was not the reason they won that championship. Not by any stretch of the imagination also towards the end of his career, though, I'm lucky number. So let's talk about even Robinson's zero NBA finals appearances in his career prior to Tim Duncan putting on dam only made it because Jordan went to play baseball because David Stern kicked him out. Forgave queuing in the Knicks were in the west. They would have went to Ford them NBA finals. So let's talk real talk. Not both nineteen. Talked on Twitter and Instagram. For different about a lot of stuff because I get hot on stuff like this. When you live the eye test of watching that like, that's the key and games where you're watching this first games that are watching the playoff games where David Robinson was absolutely doing nothing against Shawn. Kemp doing nothing against Karl Malone doing nothing against Charles Barkley those games. Here's a fun part. And this is like. Sweetheart of man hall of Famer the Admiral. Yeah, the best human ever like if I can't wait to see David like like anytime at all time pensions better NBA player. David do want to bring this up. Otherwise, we could go we could go on and on the subject, but I I do want to bring this up with you before before you go because we talked pop culture here. Nipsy hustle. You got to know him cheeses. You really changed? Hey, I know you know, what I mean? But it is one of those things where you know, you look you got fifteen different sites. Ways that I could go in a conversation. But I did want to bring this up. And I know that kind of brings it down. I know you you love this guy this guy. How did you meet him? We met him in his studio when he was working on the album that you know that he put out his camp. My camp had a lot of good vibes towards each other. We went to the studio and spent an hour together net started we just by way. This is fun to say you and I hit it off immediately. Yes. Sometimes you just know sometimes you need somebody. And you just know that you're gonna know them for the rest of your life. Okay. And we really connected, man. He was really thoughtful kid trying to do a lot of good in his way. I think the thing I'm most passionate about is for all my stick and style. If you listen to what I'm saying, there's some real tried and true love and good, and positively and I really he had a real message. He was a really hard worker. He was a long term. You know, I think in fifty year terms he did as well. Like some of the stuff we would talk about video of him. And I at the NBA all star weekend, we had dinner at NBA all star not too long ago. And as soon as he walks in. I'd say all my friends like get ready for some really deep philosophical talk. You know, nipsy the cool rapper. We hear what we're. Actually about to talk about very thoughtful. He was a warm heart. He's a good, dude. Like, and I bet you everybody listening, and I'm sure for a lot of people here who didn't closely follow him. I what probably makes me feel best is when this devastating thing happened. I think anybody outside the circle of knowing him, really, really. Well, we're flabbergasted by how the collective culture, so reacted. He wasn't as big as pocket biggie in the macro when this happened. But I think what affected a lot of people that had either never heard of him or maybe heard of him once or twice was like, well, why are like the biggest names in the in the game. So still I mean getting still three weeks later posting so emotionally it was because if you actually had the luxury to even know him a little bit he impacted you immediately. He was a special guy. So I wanted to bring them up. I'm glad you did. Because you know of people that I know you're the one that I've. I knew that you knew him. Yeah. You know? "And my body is gotten old. So those days I may get out there my show a guy a move, but playing pick up those days alone gone. What is the one singular highlight that you want us to show or if somebody says, Patrick Ewing? That's the one highlight. You would want us to see. Well, you know, I've been blessed to be doing playing basketball for a lot of years. But now I'm into other phase of my life. I'm a coach. So I think right now, I don't I wouldn't wanna show anything from me when I was playing. I've had a lot of great memories. A lot of great. I've done a lot of great things in terms of playing. But right now is coaching. And you know, we've had to a significant wins last year, which is beat Marquette and beaten villain. Over to ranked teams at the time. So I guess those two those two things would be the highlight right now of my my coaching career. You had some fun freshmen this year get us onto frontine. There is you know, as funny when I when I got here yesterday, you know, few folks was saying that to me, you, you know, you had some great freshman to. That's yes. When I started here the year, I had hair. But you know, those guys they're good and they're bad. You know, they've they've had a great year for us. But you know, there still was a learning curve. They still had to learn the difference between high school and college. And they they they believe in which is which is why I recruited them that they they are that good that they can live superman they can lead tall buildings with assume single bounds. They won't make too many mistakes. And you had to you know, sometimes put them in their place on their young. You know, the the things that you've got away with school. You cannot get away with in college, and every level that you go up is going to be even that much harder. I saw where Zion Williamson's gonna have this bidding war between Nike and Adidas, you know, maybe one hundred million dollars. What was your first to contract that Adidas it was a Dita's? Yeah. It was the data. Remember what I don't even remember what the numbers were. It was between Nike and Adidas. And fortunately Dita's one out only water sue for two years. Then they told me that. I you're not the player that we thought you were going to be. So they wanted to reduce my my my contracts that's in notice by me out late. You weren't the player. They thought right that you know, my first two seasons. I got hurt got hurt. My played fifty two games my first year. And I think I played the fifth round right around the same my second year. But you know, they just didn't think I was a player. There was gonna I was I was gonna be. So they didn't have faith did you recruit Zion? I tried. I tried to it was one of the best players in college college basketball. But we didn't have we didn't get closed. I heard you talking to coach Cowan he got a lot closing. I got an how. You were outside looking through the window. Let me let me Perry said Zairean was better than what he thought that. He didn't know he was going to be this great thing. No one knows how good a player is going to be. I mean, he was dominant for this year in college. No, one knows how great he's gonna be the next level either. But he did have a dominant year, but person that his size and can do the things that he can do is quickness..

"Like that was a that was a big big deal. It wasn't just Zion. It was the Hoyas. And it was Patrick Ewing was John Thompson. And you know, you just I was there when he was drafted. I was there that day when he was drafted. I was there for the lottery when the Knicks won the lottery. So I've been there to watch him play at different stages of his career. And the fact that the relationship changed when we were in San Antonio for the NBA finals years ago, and I was working at the mothership, and I was with John berry and Mark Jackson and Michael wilbon, we're going to go to dinner in San Antonio. And Mark then says he can't go that he's going to go out with Patrick Ewing. And I gave a little grief like well. I mean, we could always go, and he goes, no, you can't go John can go, but you can't go like it was players only. So we go we ended up going to the same restaurant. So I'm there with John Kerry. And it's awkward because there's Mark Jackson, Patrick Ewing. So we go. Hey, mark. We just seen him like thirty minutes prior. Hey, mark. And then he goes, hey, guys and Patrick's there Mark says, hey, you know, John, Dan, Patrick, and so I'm getting the feeling for Mark Jackson like okay Salo, and then get out of here because Patrick wasn't going to be comfortable with me there. So Jon, Barry, who's not afraid of anything. He said, let's just sit down. And so we sat down Patrick's to the left of me. Mark Jackson to the right? And we just started talking a couple of glasses of wine next thing. I know Mark Jackson says, hey, you wanna tell Patrick you? Don't like him. I go. What are you talking about in? Mark wasn't drinking one I should say John berry. And I were and I said we talk about it goes to tell. Who you would take a came allies you on or him, and I go I would take came and Ewing had the biggest laugh, and he thought it was great that here. I am two feet away from him. And I'm saying to Patrick Ewing. I would take came allies on over you. He loved it. And after that he was he became available. He was just comfortable with us. And then when we had him in San Antonio last year at the final four, and he came over, and we sat down did an interview. And then we started shooting hoops so poli I look over in police got I believe tears in his eyes. Now, I think because of the wind and the cold that may be that you're not really tearing like you were emotional when Patrick Ewing was out there shooting hoops, and you wanted to shoot hoops against Patrick Ewing one when he walked onto the set. I felt like I was twelve because before Michael Jordan, Chicago, my favorite college basketball player and pro. Ballplayer was Patrick you editor Jewish or Xiao was so cool. Everyone in our neighborhood and all neighborhoods bought Georgetown gear, and it's just one of those athletes. I don't think I ever expected for us to have onset..

"So you just kind of nudge them along their my my bracket won't be filled out until late tomorrow. At this time, I will be working on filling out my bracket. Probably during the final commercial break at around eleven forty. I will fill out my brackets, and then send him in. I hate it hate doing it. Because I can't watch the games. Yes. Mclovin. Do you want it to k we I'm feeling a lot of I feel like we're all miserable right now. Can we just opt out of it is that a option because we're asking these celebrities to be in the bracket challenge presented by subway, and that'd be soft. If we bow out because they want to measure a lot of these people that were having, you know, join us with this. They they don't have this opportunity. You know, they're not hard core. Sports fans, or they have an opportunity to talk sports three hours a day. So this big deal for them. It's fun for will Ferrell to do it and Bryan Cranston. And the fact that Michael Douglas is doing it. Josh do Mel sent his brackets in from Tanzania now. So this is fun for them. And we're happy to have them involved in the show. So I you know as much as I'd love to win out. Just so I can watch the games. I can't. Yeah. Polling. Do do you ever been Evan Vegas for the first round the jail? I can't go to Vegas. Well now, you can maybe now. No, not tablet. All I don't. I can't get close to that. No. I don't want any. I don't want to get close to gambling. Like, I I can't I'm in rehab. You should see Vegas those. I four the I bet it's wild. I've seen video. But I can't I can't get involved in that. Because it's a gateway and be like put a nickel here. Put a dime here. Next thing. You know, my wife's asking what's your withdrawing a lot of money. Yep. Mine a lot of drinks on bond a lot of drinks here. But no, I don't I don't want to go down that road. I did something really cool yesterday. Police said, hey, Patrick Ewing wants to interview you. He's got a podcast. I said, wait. Patrick Ewing is hosting a podcast. He wants to interview me. He said, yeah. I said, okay. So I call in Patrick Ewing. And he's with the former Washington Redskins tied in doc. Walker who's been in the media in Washington DC for probably thirty years. So Patrick was doing the interview he did his research. And he said all, you know, a little birdie told me that you used to be a disc jockey a little birdie used to toe told me used to play basketball eastern, Kentucky, little birdie too. You know, so he had my resume there. And he was asking me these questions because he said I want to get better at this. And you're somebody I always admired, and I would love if you could critique me on what I'm doing and give me some tips, and then you start to. I mean, this is Patrick Ewing asking for this. So the fact that back in the mid eighties before he he gets to the NBA I go to Georgetown, I'm covering Georgetown going into the tournament. And they were Rockstars back. Then, but you never I never got to sit down with Patrick Ewing and interviewing, but I did talk to John Thompson a few times when I went there. So you know, it's not lost on Patrick that. I was there when he was a junior and senior in college, and I couldn't talk to him. I had to talk to his coach, but the one moment, and you think Xian's famous like Patrick Ewing back then because you didn't get to see all of the games. You got to saw you got see a lot of them because of the biggies, but he stayed for years, and he had John Thompson Hoya paranoia..

"Was coming. So. No one's walked in my shoes. So I know that and I tried to be open and honest and. Obviously, no one has to like my decision. But I just tried to explain what it is. And. How I got to that point. Now, I didn't see the video tribute. And I know from reading it this morning. I know you watched it John. So the players were tapping the glass right tapping the ball. Players the reaction couldn't have been good from the crowd, though. And they played a few people in the crowd standing, but it was probably ninety four to ninety five percent booze. Ronnie don't need you. And let's go out storing while it was playing correct, right. The died down a little bit against the various during the video. You know, what I wonder this seems to be a new thing a relatively new thing in sports where the video tribute to the former player coming back is done the first one you're talking about this yesterday. It makes no sense. Hopefully years later about doing it the final time they were gonna come in when their career wait till that point a lot of that bad blood is going to subside this to me made no sense whatsoever. None it's a nice gesture by the islanders, but way, too. So there are certain guys like Ewing when he came back. You wonder stood while the Knicks decided to because Patrick Ewing's, Patrick Ewing. And it's not like there was a point you don't. Yeah. Yeah. It was it was a mutual parting ways it just one of those things both teams needed to do this with situation with the islanders wanted a back to various basically was telling him all along. I'm going to come back. Don't trade me new front office comes in and all of a sudden he's going to Toronto. So it's very very that. "You're toppy our JJ takes over back on Tuesday at one o'clock lane out there. It'd be careful if you're driving around and heading someplace we had David Lennon on from Newsday. Talking about the Yankees are just for the record the Mets the adopted dick Bryner studio for couple of hours just reminiscent a little bit about what he's up to these days. And I know Cathy, Wessel was a minister told us that. Out of his buddies from that team or not. Not internet savvy savvy or or cell savage. Making a call me on the telephone and don't call me. Because there's no other way. Each. Guys are getting up in as little medical issues here and their Willis's down in Louisiana still uninformed a country. Boy. But that was a that was an era that dick set of best when we were off air just just chatting a whole generation. Maybe at least one generation who never experienced what we went through with the Knicks. Championships, you know, being in the finals and even losing. I mean, we. When's generation CNN the nicotine the nicotine whip Patrick Ewing lost and without Patrick Ewing. It lost. And when I asked him I said, well, why what was the love affair? What what what what made the love affair so strong between the fans and Knicks. He said because we're used to winning. You think about it in sixty nine? I mean, sixty eight sixty nine was a jet sixty nine was the med sixty nine seventy was the Nixon that little group. Anything? Anything? Nixon waving. That's your four year all over the place. You know now you go to Boston to go to. Forever. Lebron goes it seemed to be into finals all the time. So you get you get you get spoiled. Yesterday. We talked a lot about Robert Kraft and black that was that was interesting night yesterday. And that's going to continue. Its that's going to go on for awhile. Now Kraft didn't seem to care needs. He's at the he's in the Oscar party is already so pictures and hanging out you don't care. I guess you get six billion dollars, and you get caught with the hell I'll pay my fine. I'll write a check for some organization. I don't think he's I don't think it's dawn on me. What what could possibly be? Real big scandal. Depending on what else they find out? Everybody was was chuckling because the pace is good for them to coordinate with something that's pretty did. You get through all of that team. It's just the owner. And what was he doing? How long was he doing? And that that's that's the sad part about it. Baseball got started yesterday. Radio tv. That's eight five but bird with two double. And it didn't get hurt. The race for three Alonzo home run on the first pitch. He saw that's going to be that's going to be a very interesting dilemma for the Mets because if you want to convince your fan base that you're not tight wads because you you didn't talk to Machado's people. You didn't talk to Harper's people. You could ahead Marwick Gonzales. Whatever reason you didn't. And now Peter Alonzo if he has a. I should use the word torrid. But if he has a hot spring. Can you see them trying to cut down the line good? The the the roster twenty-five about Alonzo. He's only hidden 4:02. But you know, he's the rookie. And can we depend on him? And he may go in a slump. See, that's that's that's the kind of losing mentality. Is your committed to winning or you're not? Is that like if you keep him on the roster? He's going to be the highest paid player in baseball. No, he's not at that position is taken already. I don't know. I'm just hoping. I'm just hoping he does what he's supposed to do has a good spring. Let's call them up nothing to worry about they just wait for me to get it done on the field. You just go give the guy chance I think everybody was puzzled when they didn't bring him up at the end of the season. Like, wait, wait a minute. You expand the roster. What's what's the problem? Thirty six one hundred. That's not good enough. Like, I understood if if you got hitting on on the wrist like a week before the season ended and you hit like a hundred because sore I could understand you want to bring them up. And it wasn't like they were fighting for a playoff spot. He could learn something seen at least see what what it's like to be in that situation. Wouldn't have been valuable information with him to see how major league ballplayers just conduct themselves. How to go back to business just to work out with them? But don't do stretching with into this. You start to develop relationships with guys that you think you're going to be playing with the following year. Right. That makes sense. Nothing makes sense to them. Nets had a nice win tonight. Stone back a couple of months ago. They wouldn't have done that Russell would forty big game winner, forty seven assists for the last twelve points tobacco game over five hundred is still in the sixth seed, which is good two games over the pistons in seven seat. So he's still got to be careful every I think I heard the announces say every game is a is a it's a play off the play in game. You can't afford to lose. A close to the nets at twenty eight and thirty one. Just keeping up effect. I was in the elevator. Take take addict downstairs, I asked them to the game today. I don't know. It's a loss. Whatever it is. Right. What you want? What else are you going to say speak? Now, I don't think so they don't even know what who's who on the team. The Knicks is starting to become like those baseball teams in spring training. And after the thirty minute, you have no idea who's on the field like the Knicks is this guy from Julie how long have you been here? Really? Okay. But every knick fan is ready for you know, you're preparing for postseason. You're not in any kind of. You're not interested in the team right now the United States, they don't go anywhere. So what's the latest with with? Where are we in the draft when he gonna do the draft when you get the ping pong when when you chance for the number one pick, then you turn your attention to. Draft free agency and all that kind of good stuff. Baz dick the same question. Do you know of any team any player who is on H anti-ship team and went to go to the worst team in the league? I've seen guys on the worst team. Go to better teams. I've never seen that before. It's not like it's not like he's twenty five. You know, he's he's thirties. By is going to be wearing down soon as you waiting for this team to get good again. To me. I'm just I'm prepared that they're not going to get the number one pick. I'm prepared to Durant isn't coming. Unprepared. Irving is coming. You'll get some second tier all star who's good. But he's not the face of the franchise. You don't want Kemba Walker. Tony, I take them. And I read something where from North Carolina. I said he likes it in North Carolina. The town embracing let me sitting in praised him he embraced it. And I don't think he wanted to come to New York and like deal with all the family. You know, a lot of guys they'd get away from the family. No guy tickets all the time. And that, you know, I think it'd be nice. But I it makes me wonder if you really want to come back. It also have to say no to Michael Jordan, which would be another thing. Yeah. So I feel he he may not go anywhere. And you know, you you'll get you'll get some good ball players. But when you're talking, you know, the mount Rushmore of the league and you're getting you know. You're getting some an okay all star. But not that elite elite hall of fame bound player than what I just I keep asking myself over and over. Why would you come to the Knicks and digman and even said it, you know, the old days it was like come to come to New York because if you thought about it he got to go to you know, if you got to New York, Madison Avenue, bright lights, Broadway, guess of all things you can do. Now, Madison Avenue is from New York all the way to California. It's. They know who you are who was the last big free agents. Come here was a star. Yeah. And and look at a embraced him. Excuse me. They loved them. The MVP Chan. These went south. When's the last time? The garden sound like the garden. Jeremy Lin was here that workout. He should have never left. But again going pay you don't wanna you know, after a while it's money. I'm gonna have gonna pay them all that money. And he's he's turned out to be serviceable guard. But he's just not that all star. I still like him. These three guard number three on the list. That's okay. The most we'll see I don't I'm not optimistic. And another thing dick said the players talk. They talk. They they know about franchise they know where to go. They know who they wanna play with. Kevin Durant after the media tirade is you don't need to come here. No. You see this is Robbie. This is the perfect. Kevin Garnett scenario comes to the Knicks. First game in the garden. Thirty eight points in in three and a half quarters and in the ticket three point to win the game loses. And then it's like, you're right. Because this is a big shot town. And if you don't get it done in the clutch, forget about thirty eight points and fifteen rebounds. We lost a game. Nobody cares. Cli- would have made the shot. That's what it comes down to. I would've made set. You can't win. Do you really want to come in? And put yourself through all that. I don't know. I mean think about they could win the championship begin. He could win the MVP in the in the in the finals again. And then you're gonna come here and do what? And if he did with its average they've gone anybody say, well, we got to build them a statue now. No, there's a lot of guys ahead of you. If you're gonna do that should have a.

It doesn't look like the pelicans want to honor those wishes woes reports the pelicans have no interest in trading eighty to the Lakers at this time and ESPN reports that the pelicans GM is quote, not picking up his phone when it comes to trade calls and the deadline is one week from today. I don't think of him cemented his legacy with the Miami Heat winning the championship when I think of Allen Iverson. I think of an MB MVP season. They lost to a better team. Your legacy is not cemented by these rings, these players all I have to win a ring if I don't win a ring I'm gonna get teased on TNT like Charles Brunton.
