"Of my lifetime and the best baseball writer of his generation. I think for sure. So I appreciate Tommy's a great colleague and I really appreciate him coming on the podcast. Previous episodes include Bob Costas. He was our last sports media podcast guest and he was really really great in terms of talking about his work with a concussion. Legacy Foundation. What happened in the latter years for him at NBC Sports? His appearance in the last dance it was he was really good And I certainly recommend that That interview had a couple of Sports media kind of Gab sessions with Chad Fan of the Boston Globe and John Rand of the sports business daily. So check those out if you want some sort of sports media earning out prior to that. Espn's Sean McDonough did some stuff on sort of where he year. Thanks broadcasting is his own experience with Monday night football and pretty relevant. I think right now and then just go down the list of Of interview guests had man Pelt on March Twenty Third Doctor Sling Gown during Ground Wall on March eighteenth and if you're into NASCAR chamie little and Shannon speak in February also. Did something in January with Tim Couch. Commun- Howard Beck uncovering Kobe. Bryant's checkup all the check. "Into the sports media. Podcast members Patrick Antonetti and Sean Sherri. Today's guest Does Not really need much of an introduction for this Audience Bob. Costas is one of the iconic voices in the history of sports broadcasting. He is currently a major league baseball network play by play announcer as well as host of specials for them but cost us. You know from his work for multiple decades and the award winning work on. Nbc It was the hosted the Olympics think Lebanon Olympics. If I'm correct about that was the host of football night in America and hosted Kentucky derbies and US Open's and Rier Cup coverage in the NBA. During the Jordan era again one of the most well known broadcasters of his generation or any generation and so he is the guest he is here not only to talk about and we had a pretty good conversation about Just the some things in his career. And and what? He thinks about a lot of stuff but he was instrumental in watching in developing. The concussion. Legacy Foundation's media project which is the first and only concussion reporting training designed specifically for sports media professionals so bob will talk about his connection with Concussion Legacy Foundation and then we will get into some other topics about Broadcasters discussing discussing concussions and head trauma on air whether one can still editorialize broadcast. If you'RE A rightsholder partner. His prominence in the last dance talked a little bit about the Tokyo Olympics. And then obviously doing baseball potentially doing baseball with no crowd so enjoyed Bob Costas is always an interesting guests. And he is the only guest on this podcast. Coming up Bob Costas on the sports media.

"Is Richard. I welcome the sports media. PODCAST producers Patrick Antonetti to guests. This week This is the third take for Mesa. Let's hope I get it. Correct on. Take Three Richie. Science is the the producer for Fox sports. NFL coverage he is the lead producer on the job Troy Aikman Erin Andrews etc team and he will be producing his six super bowl on February third as the lead game producer which is has been in the business for a long time. So He's done other responsibilities that super bowls but this is the sixth number six for him. As the lead game producer rich Russo is the lead. NFL Director for Fox sports this will be the fourth super bowl rich. Russo has directed these two guys who've been in the business for a long time have won a ton of awards and I'm excited about this conversation. Because because they're going to give us some insight into what it takes to direct and produce a Super Bowl Ritchie and rich. Welcome to the sports media. podcast thank you good to be here with you. All Right I apologize. That was three takes for me but this but let's hope I do a better job on on the question part of this interview. I'm GonNa Start with you Richard Science because I know how excited you are about doing this. podcast what happens slept for days but I think ready I appreciate that. What Richie what keeps you up at night about Super Bowl Sunday the unexpected? You can prepare as much as you can and and think you have things handled but something comes your way and it's you know you just hope your instincts and those around us instincts handle it handle. Well you know the game is the game. I think once the game starts here. Relax you settle into what you've always done. It's the it's the leadup it's it's You wake up and I always feel a sense of nervous and energy and excitement and I get a little less so once I get to. The stadium might get into the truck with a home away from home and the second comfortable surrounding in. You're surrounded by the people you you've work with and you're comfortable with and and you know your excitement builds that the game gets closer. You know the Super Bowl you have all the preliminary activities that have to be covered and and those are the things that we normally don't have to deal with and those are probably the things that I i. I worry about a little bit more and then once the game starts again and again you just hope your instincts help you when when things happen that you don't expect what about you know I would echo. What what Richie said about the unexpected? I mean I'd be lying if I said this is just another football game We are fortunate to do. You know the big games every Sunday and Thursday night and now he said the playoffs absolutely up to it but obviously with all the hype. You know the two weeks leading up to this Obviously the enormity of it Is is certainly huge. I think what Richie said is true. I think the hype leading up to it. Once the game starts you have to treat it like a football game. I'll be honest with you when the teams come down the tunnel I think. There's a certain Adrenalin for all of us. And we really want everything obviously go smoothly and we do the Intros we do the anthem. And all the activities that occur between six and six thirty and then once the ball is kicked. You can't really think about the hundred twenty million people that are watching. You just have to treat it like a football game in exactly where Richie said. We have to use our instincts out like we treat it like a game like any other any other Sunday or Thursday are Ritchie. I'm going to start with you here. You guys When I say you guys like the director and producer the real key production people replay replay producer etc.? Usually go down to the Super Bowl. Usually the Sunday I I hear or maybe Monday morning of Super Bowl Week. So let's start with. Let's start with whatever day you land in Miami as specific as you can. Can you take me through a enrich rousseau. You can pop in here at anytime you want as well but Richard. Can you take me through sort of what happens. Day to day for your group in terms of what you're doing every day to prepare for kickoff on Sunday well when I land in Miami it'll be the same urges I have when I land in any city. My first thing is where am I having lunch so when I get to Miami the first place. I'm going to look forward to Cuban place where I can get some O'Donnell's compel and some tried. Plantations contains so that's number one and that doesn't change from small games too big games then. I'll probably head out to the stadium just to get just to see what's going on touch base with people You know it's not. It's not a day that we have anything going on officially but it's just kind of settling get to the trucks just just look around figure where our truck is because that's not the easiest thing on the Super Bowl it's A. It's a huge. It's a huge community of television trucks. And then you know the work doesn't really start. We have Tuesday morning. Is the final broadcast meeting for the Super Bowl. They got us into a big room. And it's television. It's radio it's NFL. People its operations people at security people and it's a it's a big imposing room. You know the big usually square set up where you know. People are filling filling up the walls around the room and they go over. You know they go over everything they go over the whole week and they things that we we already talked about and then specifically we hone in on procedures procedures for Sunday and at what televisions needs are when things happen happen and how they happen and who's involved and who's doing this and who's doing that and that's again run by. NFL broadcasting and all the rights holders are there and and So that's Tuesday. That's that's the first official thing that we have to do all right Richard. So you WANNA pick up Wednesday. What happens once day and then and you guys can go back and forth during the week? Yes sure I mean. I mean Ritchie right on on Monday you know like you said. We'll go out to the stadium. I mean we'll also We look at a lot of Kansas City in San Francisco Games as well so like on Monday for the room. We'll continue some of the prep work from the from the week The a week prior on Monday And what I will do is I will put some final touches on what are called camera. Simon's and camera responsibilities for for these teams and basically we come up with different cameras for all different situations. Whether it's two receivers three hundred acres. I four receivers all the situations with the red zone short yardage goal line reaction type type cameras and I come up. I put put the final touches on that On Monday and like Richie said Tuesday's basically you know a big day with the league. We also you also will be at the stadium and we'll sit down and our truck on Tuesday and we'll go through what's called our monitor wall and we'll just make sure we'll sit down and we'll make sure that we're comfortable with all the added equipment with all the cameras with all the added. UVS machines That are in front of us and there were comfortable with with the location of that and that will that will certainly take some time Tuesday. We'll also do a little bit of a walk-through if there are any last minute potential camera changes or any questions questions Within within the stadium And then you know Wednesday we basically visit with one team. We go To practice in meetings with one team and guide Richie We will Wednesday and Thursday are the two days that we that we visit the teams so Wednesday is Kansas City chiefs day. So the entire the entire broadcast crew Troy Wakeman Joe Buck Erin Andrews. Chris Myers usually a few guys from the pre-game show We will go to Kansas. City's he's practice. Which is at Miami Dolphins Facility? Davey Florida probably about forty five minutes from for Miami Beach where we're staying and we'll watch practice practice and then we will get in cars and go back to the chiefs hotel and sit down with Some players there's an coaches and have production meetings and that will probably go to practice is at one thirty so We'll probably get done with them about six o'clock clock you know. So we'll meet with Andy Reid. Steve Spagnolo the defensive coordinator. Patrick Mahomes Travis Kelsey Tired Matthew You know we select a few players that That that Troy Is Interested in speaking with and you know the meetings are usually conducted by Troy Royal. He talks to he asks most of the questions. Joe and the others jump in But it's usually a very informal type session and it's It's very helpful and then Thursday Thursday we do the same with the forty niners will will go visit them. They're practicing at the University of Miami and watch their practice and then we'll go back to their hotel how and we'll talk to Kyle Shanahan or the defensive coordinator George Salad Jimmy Garoppolo. We'll talk to I have have to remember who. We're talking to Joe Staley veteran lineman. WHO's been there for a long time? It's his sixth coach and he's finally you know he had one super bowl opportunity now. This is the second we'll talk to him and deform the defensive linemen who You know used to play with the chiefs and now he's in the Super Bowl with the forty niners so Wednesday and Thursday days he's with teams and those are two of the more fun days of the week. All Right Richard. So what happens Friday and Saturday. Well well also Thursday. I'll just add Thursday Thursday morning. What I'll do was all have a a big camera meeting with all the camera? Operators all the EVS operators and spend about ninety minutes on going through the assignment. The Camera Simon Plan that we have for the game Obviously some some things can can change based on our meetings based on you know talks with with with Joe Troy Joe Ritchie and the announcers based on our interviews. But I'll have a big meeting on Thursday prior to Prior to when we go visit visit team on Friday is really a big rehearsal. Day We have a high school team. That will will come Come Tom this year. It's going to be the snow stoneman. Douglas High School from Park. When I that's GonNa come there about forty forty minutes or so From the stadium and what we do is we do a full rehearsal a rehearsal from the team introductions to the national anthem Demi Levato will will. We'll be there. You know Rehearsing the anthem. She'll be there live. we'll go through the anthem. America beautiful will run through the coin. Toss we'll run through do all the events that occur from you know from six to six thirty and then what we'll do is they'll spend about an hour to an hour and fifteen hour and a half just running some place and what that is really for some of the additional cameras and additional equipment that we have and they'll just run some sideline plays go run. Some you know some two receivers three receivers run some goal line plays. We'll just basically taking a a pretty much a look at some of the additional cameras is that we have and it's a lot of fun for them but we do get you know we do get a lot out of it. And that's that's really a long day. I mean they'll probably get there roughly ten to ten thirty already and they may be there till you know the six thirty seven or so so it's full of full rehearsal. Day is what what Fridays and and then Saturday Saturday for us. We try actually not to go to the stadium To be on to be perfectly honest with you we we try to not go unless there's something that we need to go For if there's any fires to be put out or something you know that that makes us want to go need to need to go there we have our production meeting at three o'clock. Richie think it is. Well I think in the past on Saturday Years ago ago when we first started doing them we used to go out to the stadium. 'CAUSE IT teams would have walked through and they get to see the stadium We would go to that and just turned out. It was more hassle than it was worth it so we stopped on Saturdays. What we try to do is is is meet with the game officials We've done it in the past. We're trying to work it out. This year.

"Book media podcast Always Patrick Antonetti two segments this week three guests I up Sam Amick he is a national NBA writer for the Athletic and we that helps to leak in terms of media coverage in terms of viewership some of the more interesting stories and interesting teams if you're an NBA fan you know who Sam Amick is one of the most respect the people in the sport I think you'll enjoy that conversation conversation that is followed by twelve minutes stretcher so with Ian Darke teller woman on their chemistry and their relationship and how to develop on air chemistry between partners why it works for them the use of humor in sports broadcast up to Toronto not too long ago and it was able to do a quick sit down with them so Sam Amick I followed by Darken Telemann coming up on the sports media podcast or as I said at the top Sam Amick is a national NBA writer for the athletic and one of the respected. the voice in the sport he previously worked for sports illustrated USA Today and the Sacramento Bee and he's kind enough to join us on the sports media podcast on the eve of the two thousand nine hundred twenty twenty regular season Sam big big moment for you Sam it's the start of another season you have taken all your Adam and you're you're you're ready to go Richard I'm ready to go I'm one of the few athletic national folks who will not be in La for clippers acres on I'M GONNA head out to Houston on Wednesday and take a little dive into the Rock and story they've got a a great slate of start of season game James they go Milwaukee New Orleans and okay see for the Chris Paul Russell Westbrook reunion right out the gate so I am excited man I mean you know I both been doing this for awhile now obviously shared some time cy and it is it sounds corny but the logger I'd do it the more appreciative get to you know to be logging fifteen sixteen seasons now and there's a rhythm to it and then when you get to late October and this time of year there is always a pretty neat energy because the Games are back the storylines or said and you're GonNa actually see just how things unfold well I I'm proud of the athletic for covering teams that's odd loss Angeles impressed by the thought there tonight's of Nice of our bosses to do that all right this is you know this is a media specific or media oriented more Accurately podcast so I WANNA start off with this the the biggest story foreign away prior to the run-up of the regular season has been in the nexus of China and the NBA The reaction the League to Darryl Morris comments initially and where eventually went and then of course how player there's have reacted or have commented on this and and most notably Lebron James so let's start here in your opinion how much will China consume the coverage of the NBA this season you know it's hard to handicap it you know I thought that he was Excuse me I thought it was dying down about a week ago Lebron put a bunch of kerosene on that fire and got it going again Adam Silver's sat down with Robin Roberts and that time into where you know his clothes certainly made headlines where he had shared with the world that the Chinese government had pressured him to fire d'oro Maury more gasoline from the fire Chinese government got upset so my early read would be that I don't think that it's going to go away at all and I think a lot of times what will possibly flare it up is gonNA be either people within the NBA saying that something that is you know going to cause a reaction or you've got all these other moving parts when it comes to this story that could have a ripple effect on the League are you going to spark the conversation again that way whether it's another company you know having its own kind of conflict yet again with Chinese government and the way there doing things and you know the laundry list of companies we're talking about the apples blizzards Mercedes for sake all the way down the line or the government politics aside you know last week the House passed with flying colors you know the democracy and Human Rights Bill in support of the protesters talk until Washington DC on both sides of the aisle has for now made it very clear that you know if they're picking sides here it's going to be wrong side and that's certainly not then received well by the Chinese government show the NBA is is a bit player in this whole thing which is crazy to say because of the the scope of their business and their league but because of all those things I mean certainly the story is not going away I wanna get your thoughts on this because this is this is how oh I think it's GonNa play out a little bit and you can certainly agree or disagree but it is in the interest of ESPN and Turner not to I I'm not gonNa say to avoid the story because I don't think they can but it is certainly in their interest not to be aggressive with the China's story conversely whether it's The New York Times or Washington Post or athletic or name your other news organization and they don't they're not rights partners with the League and they're going to ultimately decide whatever their writers reporters and store the editors decide so my thought is that I think the biggest players here ESPN and Turner are going to try to mitigate this where I think see the story continuing from sources outside of those places including non-sports publications which I think have a very vested interest in the China News how do you see that no I went through all that I mean. UCF Turner thing is very real you know I mean it doesn't take you long and in our media circles to run into colleague from one of those places will candidly Kinda Shrug and say yeah I mean we're on the sidelines for the most part in this one and that doesn't mean they have zero presence I wish I listened to this already because I can speak better on it but I know that our friend in Cali good Zach Lowe had address the China situation on his podcast I it seemed that that got pretty positive reviews as far as how candid I'm sure that was tricky for him and I mean that's the the irony of the story is here we are you know critically analyzing the NBA and its business interests and how that and you know how that fits and reconciles or maybe doesn't with its own values or perspective but media companies are facing the same challenge and and I think for the independent outlets that you kind of outlined the other thing that is in real time being determined is a combination of what Kim Outta town 'cause he's played one set for the coverage you know make sure you're you know informed balanced all the things that are ten of what we try to do but then also oh just being real about life business there's had like you and I exchanged a few messages last week about curiosities regarding like these stories on China for us and essentially like are people reading them and how you know I really didn't call us like how successful quote unquote were they from a business standpoint and so that's GonNa always be part of the Calculus two and for us I mean it's it is interesting because it's obviously extremely it's an incendiary topic where the comment section is on fire but people are certainly interested to the point of reading it they might not enjoy every single thing they read they are diving in and absorbing the coverage and so again front you know that is going to tell a lot of these companies you know us included to keep making sure we cover the story yeah well said and this'll be the last thing on China just worth noting obviously salmon I both worked for the athletic and there was a story that we had where the comments disabled discussion was really really toxic on there but there were people who criticized spend I think that criticism was fair and the comments were since restored on those stories but SAM is correct didn't like it you know it's a lot for companies to sort of figure out including something that you might not think about is just how far you let a comment go where it disrupts the readers of their enjoyment or sort of you know sort of not to be lead if they have a certain of political opinion so it's a lot of it's a lot of moving parts that a lot of these companies have to deal with all right Sam from China one of the interesting things about the NBA this year I think really really interesting is the the notion that there's much more parody in twenty nine eighteen than we've ever seen before the the warriors era ended in Toronto it was an incredibly successfully or I would say for the NBA if you want to judge it on television viewership if you want to judge it on Awareness Star power and now we're entering a different scenario where seems like legitimately six seven eight teams might have a chance to win the NBA title. How do you think that plays out just in terms of interest in the league coverage in the League where there's not a dominant superpower at the moment I think it's it's refreshing I mean I did enjoy that kind of covering that dominant warriors era and certainly because I live about ninety minutes from Oakland I was there back in the days when it was you know steph curry was trying to fight for time with Monty Ellis and you know get on the floor and and the Joe Laker but now she's the Andrew Bogut trade to the crowd at Oracle arena against booed off the floor Rick Perry is fighting for him fast forward and these guys are racking up three championships and five straight trips to the final and every year accurate it or not the perception was that they were invincible and there was only one dog in this fight and that part being gone is good for the League it's just the fact that the parody is good you know there's a fascinating tipping point of the summer in that respect where when Kawhi Leonard so uring out where you want to play in free agency you know there was a very real moment in time where people around the League thought that it was going to be the Lakers and then you probably would have had another version of the warriors just down the it doesn't happen and not only do I go to the clippers he brings Paul George with them you know I don't know how long my list is of legitimate title contenders but even you know right out the gate in the regular season and we talked about this at the top like the idea that we have some reporters going to La and I'm GONNA go ahead and go Houston we're not really sure where to go you know what I mean because we don't know which team deserves our attention the most and Russell Westbrook going to Houston revived story and an open gonna work I even kind of falling on the side and thinking it will work but you know from there you're talking about the Milwaukee Bucks sixers you know a lot of squads have a lot of reasons it'd be fired up and I think it's good for league you're going to have more fan bases engaged at a pretty high level from beginning to end because it's one thing when your team's going for a playoff spot late in the year and the casual fan emerges at that point and starts tuning in and things like that this is more to me than if you think your team really has a shot at winning at all you pay attention all the way through 'cause you gotta see how they evolve and there's no way that it's bad for me.

"Always is Patrick Antonetti two segments this week three guests. I think you can enjoy this. I was Adnan virk. He has been on this podcast. Many many times always always he's fun always a ton of name dropping and people seem to enjoy our conversations he of course is the host of disowns change up that is their. MLB whiparound show host their boxing in coverage he's now also on the MLB network and has added the NHL Network and we get into a lot of things from the difference be differences between working at zone versus espn his over punish Minniti SPN while ESPN did not keep Ryen Russillo and we're zone might be heading in the future. I think you'll enjoy that conversation and after that it is Ivan May Zell and Jon Dahl of Espn Ivan Zell of course one of the foremost college football writers in the countries covered college football for ESPN since two thousand to Jon Dahl is an ESPN vice president of special projects and original content one of the point people behind thirty for thirty and that is a discussion based on all the content ESPN has for college football's. One Hundred Fiftieth anniversary season. They have a ton of stuff and really good stuff documentary style stuff including a couple of things that I saw on the integration of college football which were really really fascinating and well done. ESPN is also doing all sorts of greatest games. They have a panel to pick. you know the greatest players of all time so it's it's a sport obviously. ESPN is significantly invested in and they have thrown a ton investment towards that all right so I obeyed an virk and then Jon Dahl and I've been mays L. coming up on the sports media podcast all right as I said at the top Adnan virk. This guy has a lot of jobs now at this point. He's the host of zones change up. Which is there era. MLB whiparound show he's hosting their boxing coverage early some of their major fights he's a hosted the MLB network and now has added NHL network network to his resume so obviously I think people know add an for many appearances on this podcast as well as his long career. ESPN and you know one of the Great Canadian Indian icons of his time as well at virk joins us on the sports media Pakistan. Welcome back rich to quote Longley's brokeback mountain. I wish I knew how to quit you. This is a record breaking fifth appearance in your podcast right now to Mel Hill is furiously trying to contact your producer trying to book her next appearance with with the exception of John Oriented James Andrew Andrew Miller. There's been no greater friend of the podcast that me this is probably a sad statement for both of us but it is a thrill three and once again and of course let's make it clear. I'm only here because 'cause Marty. Brennaman did not come through for so listen. You're going to go from the reds iconic broadcaster to me congrats so there's a lot of truth there and let's let's hit some truths first off you at one one point one of the episodes. I did with you when I was at sports illustrated had the most download side ever had it was in the six figures which I still think had to be some kind of glitch but the fact is it exists so am I thought in terms of booking you after that massive six-figure podcast was all right this guy's gold for me. I'm GONNA be booking. This guy the downloads are we're GONNA come. You know s is GonNa. Pay Me extra well that turned out to be true cadence thirteen. GonNa give me a you know a big big castle in the sky well that they're in turn out to be true. What happened in and is every time? I've had you on since them. The downloads have dropped so is it a question of your lack of popularity or maybe I'm not doing as good a job. How would you How would you assess the fact that one time you know you were at like? Bill Simmons Ryen Russillo part of my take type levels and now you're now now. You're like you like a Schmo like me. I don't understand why as I fade into obscurity. I appreciate the fact you throw me a lifeline at least resuscitate my verbal an Iq a Q. At least out there in terms of the the public you rating but I will say this. You're right at one point. I was the number one podcast you had and living like a King I mean I was I was just gluttonous and and boastful useful and then one week later the Great Sean McDonough knocked me off that purchase or call six figures and the next week mcdonagh just dusted me so I can. I can never quite recover of course Sean on should be number one because he's the best and I did my impression free last time I will admit you're right about one thing which is that when I was on the last time I went from top. Billing in the first one was unlock them shared building. I was like the second guest on Colbert because there was me and my man Michael Lombardi together and as you pointed out when I was when I was pumping up sinophile listen cadence thirteen. They're so so happy to get me 'cause they gave me a home for sinophile during the GM shuffling as you know the GM chef oh Geez can subscribe to on Apple podcast doing great. I'm completely writing Lombardi's coattails because he's fabulous when it comes to the NFL he he just crushes people and speaks his mind and as you mocked me the last time it was on. You said you know they gave sinophile just because that's the throw in like they want to do the GM shuffling okay. We'll give you some. NFL to add sad for me to admit but you're absolutely right. I don't think Chris could care less about We need the subscriptions. Please help me out C. I N. Any P. H. E. Go to apple podcast subscribe to Senegal. You never have to listen to it but if you want to hear about the Irishman the new Scorsese Dinner Pacino film I gave a lengthy review spoiler for please. He's helped me out but it pays me to admit rich. You're right sinophile. we're on life support right now okay. Let's be honest listen. I'm with you because at one time I think when I was at SL was the bill of the cadence agents thirteen ball. Let's put this. I was like Tesco in Godfather Eight. We'll go. We'll go to basically now seriously. I'm like gunman number three for cadence thirteen. I I could not be further down the list. Your pockets will Lombardi is the bell the ball so me and you. It's you know we're both struck. We're like right right now. Tim Robbins Swim through that thing and Shawshank hoping maybe to get to the other side and maybe it'll be Chris Corcoran and Spencer Brown Zuzu Watson. Ao to to re up our podcast. We'll see what happens to your credit. At least you've always shelf those guys out like I. I like to listen to podcasts in their entirety so I I love to listen booger McFarland. He was tremendous Emma Bogus during the second for you but at the end you always mentioned John Mccain Chris Cork and like you make sure to give those guys love. I would think that should count for something. One of the things I've really enjoyed writing about when I'm writing for. The athletic is behind the scenes people producers. I find that actually a lot of times far more interesting than the than facing talent like yourself so whether it's Patrick Antonetti Nettie or Taranto Malegaon or Lou Pellegrino Myo producer like I I find those people far more interesting than you know the good hair crew like you and Chris Valor now go ahead ahead by the way here's another thing I wanted to get before you. Give Me Your Book Mcfarland Story. You Love Deniro. I Love Deniro. Have you ever cursed on a podcast. Have you ever draft a fuck. You like Deniro deal with Brian stelter the other day. I haven't reminds me of when Joe blocked was one of your I guess I want to say and I think you actually set him up go. Can you give me your favorite curse word. I I believe backdropped an f-bomb brand of the gate he did now. What is I mean. I know I unless this is sort of against her principles. What is your favorite curse word. my mom. My Mom and dad are going to listen to podcasts yeah so I don't. I don't feel like I WANNA be cursing but I listen the four letter expletive started with F for fits for so many different scenarios. Let me just say this. That is your mom and dad the chances of them listening to the sports media podcast literally are the same as like me flying on the Concorde John Skip come but I will say about when it comes swearing. I do remember this tip that Steve coolest toy this back when I was at the score because you know my buddies sitting Tim and Cabbie my whole crew from the score but coolest and we we used to have serious hardcore satellite Radio Richard Garner Cam Stewart etc and stuff on the score and he on the radio and you can curse here and Cooler said to me he goes was hey just because you can curse doesn't mean you should and I was like okay. He goes people view you a certain way this is Adnan Virk from court surfing and he's on TV and he's clean cut etc voltage are dropping episode kind of jarring and I will admit I do think there's something to that like when I heard buck cursing your podcast. I'm sure Joe Buck uses profanity but it's a little you know little jarring it I I I don't. I don't know if it's it's like you know endearing two summers off putting but I try to refrain by the way did I ever ask you about my God. No one's going to listen to podcasts because it's just way to sort of inside this podcast but did I ever ask you about how you felt about Jim. Miller the time right after your you're. I don't know how to describe it firing or leaving. ESPN when Jim Miller who is a very mild mannered guy like totally like went tarantino basically and just like blasting asking like curses left and right I couldn't that's a guy who I'd never heard drop an f-bomb and then Miller's like given fucks all over the place that was incredible. What I'll I tell you what happened. I had listened to Martian. Would Jimmy trainer. I'd correct me in the time line. I was fired on a Friday. Andrew writes it Sunday Sunday. Monday marshon was Jimmy. I believe Jim Miller was with you Tuesday so Mondays podcast. I remember listening to a Tuesday morning. I'm making eggs for my kids and it literally rich. It's like listen your own funeral because there were there were discussing me like in past tense like at one point Jimmy Nasty Andrew. What was you know what's what's the reaction been an interesting very well like I mean people like that and then these are good guys well like a good broadcaster. And what are his job prospects while they view him as this. I'm like I'm a past past person ocean like I'm no longer living like this is just too too surreal to listen to so then I had no interest in listening to anymore and I didn't want to go online and read stuff because Judah I both discussed test drive yourself mental. If you read everything people write about you the next day my friend Alpha Helwan Alpha message me and he goes..

"Gentlemen Gentlemen got are welcome to the sports media PODCASTS. My Producers Always Patrick Antonetti this week. It is a regular on this podcast. Is John of these sports business daily. He's their media rider later. He is a writer for Sports Business Journal and he also has great newsletter that he does with Michael Smith that your sports business daily reader a make sure you sign up for It's really good John Not only does he get really interesting stories and reporting and there. Let's you know just how powerful he is when it comes to interacting with the movers and shakers sports media landscape and Johnny joins us on these sports media podcasts John How are you. I'm I'm a man about town richards the John. I'm I'm a little under the weather here so I'm not going to be as quick as you. Today you have a big advantage in terms of sharpness and and you know quality of responses so it's a big. It's we're counting on you to carry. This podcast is really what I'm saying. That's trouble trouble right there all right so let's let's start off John when the NFL viewership you know there's a lot of stories you could always sort of lead with but to me I think that's the most interesting on my mind right now because the NFL week one they they had a great week John the the viewership numbers are finely in and Monday night football in particular was way up year-over-year year-over-year in terms of viewers and obviously overnights Fox's game. giants cowboys game in that window was up. Even though I think the game the concurrent Marin game the year before was a better game most of the pregame shows were up the stir the first game of the season the The Sunday night football Thursday game was up so you know the interesting thing to me is that viewership was up even though there were some blowouts in gene key game steelers patriots was done giants cowboys was not very good. The browns were a message against the titans. So how do you very open ended. How do you view it? What do you what leave you off week one dealership well? It's funny I is sometimes we get Greek word spending too much time talking about TV ratings but I can tell you we he had a sports business journal couple about a month before kick-off. You got a big round table where he had network executives. We had sponsors we had league executive team executives and we asked about the biggest story lines that they were looking for going into the season and and every single person mentioned MTV ratings that the the the the League is as fixated and focused on ratings. They don't WanNa see ratings. Go down and so it's a it's a very in terms the sports business and in terms of what I cover TV ratings is a really big issue for them and I gotta say coming out a week one I there are a better case scenarios but if you're the NFL and you're looking at these games that were not competitive by and large especially in some of the bigger windows windows and they still saw substantial games they they have to be I'm not have to be I happen to know that they are like thrilled by it and they think that this is something the thing that is going to build throughout the season always hard on week wanted to take a look at it but but if one is any indication like you know it's going. It'd be a pretty good season for the. NFL Are Johnson. Let's get into the wise my thesis doesn't mean I'm right or wrong as to why this exists and I think Mike Mullen Hill in your buddies at Fox sports I think agrees with me here and a lot of this has to do John my opinion with offense and quarterbacks the League is marketed by quarterbacks. It's always marketed by quarterbacks you know brady versus breeze and manning versus Brady and now it's mahomes versus Wentz you can market quarterbacks lacks nationally because you don't necessarily have to be in that particular city to be a fan of that quarterback are interested in that quarterback so they have a very I think really good group above quarterbacks. Particularly Young quarterbacks to the rules have been set up to produce more offense and the offensive numbers in the League. Go Up and again offense. Really I think sells sells the sport more than defense last year particular. There were some great games very very competitive games and I think obviously that helped. I think you know you continue to sort of just go deeper into the factors. The home experience continues to be that much greater in terms of watching the game. It's great to watch on TV TV. I would think sports gambling has a little bit of a factor. I don't know that's initially draw the line from sports gambling Lee more legalisation to added viewership but I think I think maybe that will come and it does feel like and again. This is pure anecdotal that more people are in a fantasy football this year then maybe in the last couple years I could be wrong about that. that's my thought at least very early and get its only week one as to why why viewership was up and then lastly John and again. I should just mentioned the college. Football numbers are way up so it does seem like Americans for whatever reason this September there was Kinda thirst for football because it's not just the NFL that's up colleges ages way up to and we keep talking about ratings being up at It's important sometimes to take a step back and say ratings for television in general are are are falling like a stone and so this is really unusual you know there's a cliche in TV now flat as the new up well well. NFL ratings like you said college. Ratings are actually going on so it's it's especially impressive in terms of that. I mean you you hit on on most also the things I think that you know every year I asked her on McManus over CBS. I think you appreciate that drop right there Richard But we all nice I tried to. I tried to put those in pretty a obliquely anyway I asked him about like why what what is he he's looking for and he always talks about storylines and I think think go going into this. NFL season there there are a lot of storylines that are that are going beyond. you know hardcore football golf fans. I think you know what happened. In Cleveland. They have to start winning but you know all the excitement and everything around Cleveland has really captured some casual fans or even some non fans. I think you know having having the Patriots in this in this sort of dominant team is is something that always he's a an increases ratings. you know it's true. Fans might not like it. They might be like a little more parody but when you have a you know a team of the decade or with with the Patriots team of two decades you know still on top and and beating people in Primetime by by several touchdowns and people tune into that so that there are a lot of story lines that are out there. You said the the quarterback play a lot of storylines revolve around the quarterback plays well and one thing that I'm I'm hearing a lot more and I think it's because Fox in the gambling game but you're going to hear a lot from Fox and they think that gambling is really increasing ratings in those markets markets were gambling has been legalized so they they take a look at New Jersey and in in Pennsylvania to sort of you know big East Coast in states high population centers and ratings are up even more so in those states than otherwise they think that has has legalized gambling gets rolled out a little bit more. It doesn't necessarily mean that more people are gonNA be watching it but it means that the people that are watching it and our gambling are going to be tuned in mm for longer and so it's like Al Michaels at the end of a Sunday night football game talking about Mike who's still watching blow out you know those are the people and that's that's what advertisers dodgers and the NFL and the networks really want John What kind of importance do you place on certain teams this year having good years the browns have have They're still they have national multiple national windows laughed. I don't know if it's four or five. It strikes me. That league needs to steelers to be pretty good given national windows. I don't have it in front of me but you know usually the New York teams sort of have national windows even when the New York teams are not great and then for sure they need the bears to do well given that it's the you know the top five market and you just dealing with sort of a sheer number of people who could watch out of Chicago but off the top of your head obviously to me. I feel like Brown. steelers bears very very key teams for the NFL this year. I the cowboys I think will be good. The Eagles will be good so they're going to have some you know big television teams that are going to be good but so often. I feel like you can really have a good that year in aggregate or overall if some of these sort of big market or teams that have national windows have good years there are teams like you mentioned the cowboys the packers and now the Patriots and and I think you mentioned Philadelphia's well. They're all one and the all look good while the packers not necessarily but they're all WanNa know and and there's some optimism and that always helps but if you talk to the executives they point to Chicago bears and they think that the increase increase in ratings that they saw last season was a factor of the bears actually playing well for the first time in several years the the Pittsburgh steelers you know they they've been they've been pretty good for a pretty long time and so that they didn't look good on Sunday night so there's a little bit of angst thanks there because they they they the steelers are national brand and the steelers being good. We'll help TV ratings. I'm not sure if the browns fall into that the browns there's a lot of interest around the browns and I know that they have a bunch of I think it's four prime time games coming up in the rest of the season but every every season there's like a team that comes in with a lot of hype and I think they hope they do well because there's a lot of hype there lot of characters. There's a lot of storylines around yeah my team but if they don't Cleveland is in a market that the TV networks necessarily depend on yeah the the the you know they sent Romo Komo Nance..

"Though i think the browns are going to be pretty good i think the browser browse first and foremost they have to learn how to win and it's kind of like the example always use you know you've been doing sports media thing for a long time your knowledge and information. He's really really good. But how do you take that and convey that to your audience. You probably started doing it. The first time you probably want as good as you are now. Even no you probably were as counted that then and so you had to learn how to use that talent to convey your message. What have you the same thing. They have all this town now. How did they take that talent balance and turn it into wins where they can learn how to win football games. That's gonna be the same thing and i think they'll be better. <hes> probably the second half of the season even when it may be a little bit of bang.
