"So you got fired a month to do his job and was rehired less than 24 hours later because his entire team, including the sun, some of the owners are protested. Yeah, protested. And said they were not going to play unless he was back. So a guy that has had that track record for getting players to buy in, same thing with the islanders. Again, when you're in a team coach by Barry tried, so you're known for having the identity of stingy grinded out team, but as a guy who helped run their defense, he played a very practical and hands on role in terms of getting that defense to be a team that was tough to play against. I think they were in the top ten in fewest goals against per game in all four years with the islanders. So it seems like a guy that wherever he's gone, he's done a very good job at getting guys to communicate, get his message across, get guys to buy in. And so for this team, if his main objective is getting more offensive capabilities out of this decor, seems like a pretty good guy to take on that task, especially if it's something that allows guys like mcavoy or grizzly would have you hit another gear in terms of their offensive production. I don't think you're going to see Brendan Carlo all of a sudden be a 15 goal score or what have you. But if he's able to get if he's able to get more production or just more adopting more mindset of finding those shooting lanes of not being afraid to take a shot and maybe in the past, you'd be chastised for being a low danger shot. If it's all about finding those lanes and capitalizing on them, seems like a pretty good guy for kind of the objectives or the bruins are mapping out for this roster. And that was something that bruins wanted the past couple of years. I remember even Cassidy mentioning this after the hurricane series in 2020 and the bubble saying, we need to get more shots through from the point. And over the past couple of years, it never really took place. And again, hampus lindholm helps with that. It does not help the Charlie mcavoy is going to be out for the first month and a half, two months of the season. Of course, I could be out for a month. So that definitely hurts, but I do think when the lineup is healthy, I think for the direction they want to go in, Gruden sounds like the guy. We will see we will completely say, again, it's an assistant coach, so it's not like he's going to revitalize the whole system. But good to get a new voice on the bench. You know, they got one last year in Chris Kelly. They've had Joe Sacco now forever. I know Joe sack was nothing to do with the defense, but like Joseph has been there since I think like what 2014. Quite a while. Quite a while. And you have goalie bob, obviously. So quite the assistant coaching crew Gruden and interesting hire should be interested to see what he does. But Connor, what can people look forward to from you over at Boston sports journal? Yeah, Evan, we're going to continue to break down the off season as we await some actual tangible news surrounding increased version on David creche. But until that happens, we'll still have you covered every step of the way. I think next week we're going to do a little bit of a dive into prospects and we usually do a prospect ranking every year during the off season, so I think we're going to commit to that undertaking next week quite the undertaking.

"That's promo code CL, and S 50, get online with a game, stats, stats. Where the game starts. So it's funny, we mentioned the orange line being on fire and you know, that's unfortunate. It's fun to joke about. But there's something else that's orange and on fire in the NHL right now. And that is your Calgary flames. And I don't mean it's I don't mean, I do not mean that it's because they are the actual flames. I mean, they are actually, they are on day of burning. They are burning to the ground Evan. They are burning as we speak. I actually just, this is such, I feel like such a loser. As you were talking doing the read, I wrote down tweet orange line, dash flames. So I'm making a mental note. Maybe you can beat me to it as I'm driving here. Anyways, for those who do not know the flames are if there we go. The tweets are being made as we speak. The flames are on fire though. The flames lost Johnny gaudreau in free agency. And then, of course, the next shoe to drop was Matthew Charles being like, I ain't resigning.
Bruins hire Montgomery as coach to replace Cassidy
"Jim Montgomery is the new head coach of the bruins The 53 year old Montgomery spent the past two seasons as an assistant with the blues He was fired from his first NHL head coaching job by the stars in December 2019 with a team citing unprofessional conduct Montgomery replaces Bruce Cassidy who was dismissed following her first round loss in the playoffs Montgomery will open the season without at least two key components left wing Brad marchand and number one defenseman Charlie mcavoy will miss the start of the season due to injuries And Patrice bergeron is mowing retirement I'm Dave

"It doesn't really do anything for me. The worse it's you're pretty bringing back the same roster with a worse coach. I don't really know how that moves you need 11. No. It doesn't. It doesn't at all. And now Elliott Friedman had said on his 32 thoughts podcast after a game 6 cup finally said that he was talking about the lightning assistance interviewing for jobs, Jeff halpern and Derrick lalonde. You've mentioned halpern a ton and the past bunch of weeks. You turned a lot of people onto that idea. And Friedman mentioned that he didn't the brews are going to do second round interviews this current week. They could interview those guys, but I don't think they're the overwhelming favorites. That was kind of the vibe he gave. Like they might talk to them, but might not, you know, wouldn't surprise them, but it's not like overwhelming favorites or anything. The tough part is, you know, who also needs a new head coach right now. The Detroit red wings. And you know who runs the detour at red wings? Stevie why? And who do you think hired?.

"Is it the best one two punch down the middle you could have? Probably not, considering creature is 36 coming off a year in hockey that is not as good as the NHL. And Patrice bergeron, by the way, is going to be 37 next year. Again, I still expect you to be good. I'm not saying that. What I'm saying is that gets him in the playoffs. That probably does, right? It doesn't fix your problems. And I'm not justifying any of this. I'm saying this is what their thought process is probably is. And that's what it is. It gets playoff tickets. They get people in the building in May, probably not June, 'cause I don't see that roster doing that. And they think they need a new coach to get them over the hump. I also think, you know, it keeps getting thrown around that maybe bergeron and the higher up guys didn't like Cassidy. Which I don't think, again, we're just speculating. This is not like I've not heard anything aside from the same stuff that other people are hearing. And putting on Twitter, you know, maybe guys didn't like Cassidy and that's why they fired him. But again, why wouldn't you just go on a totally new direction? Why do this? By the way, they have not signed creature yet. Over here is not come back yet. So we're kind of just speaking hypotheticals, but that's what it feels like they're doing. And it's, again, it's just, I think it's infuriating for people because so the band comes back together and what, they're out in the first or second round again. Right. And you're not leading towards at least a long-term plan to getting back there. You're still stuck. And it's one thing of let's say this was, let's reverse it to last off season and the bruins. All right. You're in the same way. You don't know what you're getting with bergeron and krejci. But you have the leeway to really retool this roster that all right. New voice, rec talk it, anyone like that, whatever, right? But you have Berger on back creatures back and you've got 2020 plus million in cap space. You've got a lot of room to really augment this roster. What are you doing if bergeron and criteria back? As you said, they're probably going to come back on affordable deals if that's if that's the line of thinking we're going with here, which is very, very tangible scenario. That's well and good. The band's back together. Whoo, you get the people the shirts out front of the garden will have plenty more like they'll be like the goalie hug, it'll be just bergeron and kraji. It'd be great to sell it very well. Or seen in Avengers Endgame where they all come back. Yeah, exactly. It would be great. That being said, what else do you surrounding this team with? You still have a bunch of contracts with dead weight. You don't really have, you know, are you placing all your bets on a guy like lysell, being a savior on the scene, which is really dumb. And again, you're still looking at even though we've talked about it before that with these injuries, I'm sure the bruins could go on a second half run or they can at least become a respectful respectable team that could push for a wildcat spot. Bergeron and crazy are not coming back to a team that's primed for a contention run, right? They're coming back to a flawed and injured roster that Cassidy spun gold and made chicken chicken salad out of chicken shit with for years. He's not there now..

"And so it's just like it's a perfect encapsulation of the way they play, which is like they're so comfortable just getting the puck into space and feeling like they're going to win that 50 50 battle, a disproportionate amount of time and it might be a 52 48 battle in their regard or whatever and it works out in their favor, right? So yeah, I'm really curious to see that in this match up. I know that the hurricanes had a lot of success this season against the bruins. I think they beat them like 16 to one or something in their three matchups. One of those was started by two grass, and I think another one didn't have bergeron or Marsha and the lineup for the bruins. So I'm not sure how much of it there is to take from that, but I did think it was interesting seeing how maybe some of the stuff the hurricanes do what we talked about in terms of not carrying the puck in terms of so on and so that offensive approach may be gave the bruins a bit of challenge. So I'm curious to see how much that carries over. Was there anything else on the bruins here? We haven't really talked about bergeron in the season he's having it. I think people are probably aware of that right now, but I don't know. It's indispensable. It's ridiculous. I've never seen a 70% expected gold share in the volume of medicine that he played is just downright preposterous. At age 36 or whatever. It's ridiculous. I think the thing that I did find amusing, we only seen it for about 50 minutes or so because lindholm, unfortunately, got hurt for a stretch there after the trade deadline. But did occasionally just stack basically this format unit of they'd have bergeron marchand and then mcavoy and went home on the ice together at 5 on 5? And they had a 77% expected gold share in those minutes..

"Yeah, again, I mean, it's a completely different team. And it's been rare that the bruins have not had those two not on the ice together. It's been a long time. I can't even remember the last time that they were out for an extended stretch of time. And you're seeing, again, bergeron retires, you got so limited down the middle. And you know, again, Martian is not retiring anytime soon he's not pulling an Aaron Donald, which the Aaron Donald stuff was interesting. I had not heard about the retirement stuff. Before the game and then Rodney Harrison just kind of dropped it in the free game. Yeah, no big deal. And then it was talked about a little before the game I like Michelle to fly on the sideline and it's like, was this like do people talk about this before? Did it just like spawn? And now he's like potentially retiring. So none of that with Martian that we know of. So he'll be around for quite a bit. But again, it kind of hits at this like, you need both. And I don't think that, you know, let's say bergeron does retire after the season. What do you have with marchand? Like Marsha has a great play driver, same with pasta or not, but you need that legit number one center and you don't have it. You do not have it. Outside of bergeron. So it comes down to again, that's why this deadline could be one of the most important that the bruins have had in years, which we say every year, but I really mean it this year. This could have a lot longer to 2023. It would be the same thing, but honestly, considering what the window is. Yeah, every year going forward for any more important in terms of charting out the future because we've said it before. I don't think this team is going to sell or are they going to completely blow things up. And again, I think you look at the state of this team. Can you really blow things up completely anyway? There's people who talk about they should just trade everyone and all of a sudden get into the sweepstakes for the dad sweepstakes. No, I think the floor of this team is also too high that even if you like bergeron retires and you try to sell off tradable assets like the brush, Craig Smith, all these other guys, they're still not at that tier where you're hovering with Montreal and Arizona. We are going to have a viable chance. Maybe you get the.

"This. This February 15th and this is the bruins beat on CLS media. Welcome to the bruins beat on CLS media, my name is Evan Marino. He hope you guys have any great day, a great week. Hopefully had a great Super Bowl weekend, did something cool for it? Maybe we're there. Or as people Blackburn said on Twitter who wouldn't want to just sit on the couch and stuff their face. What's the fun and being there when you can just sit at home on the couch with a big bag of chips and some beer or maybe you're having soda or whatever it is and just eating away, drinking away. Personally, I just chilled. Just chilled, ordered our chicken sandwich from a local restaurant. It was delicious. Watch the game, even get you hungry right now. But it was a good game, Connor and I got into it to start. Just a little bit. But in this episode, we talked for a while about these Mark Andre flurry rumors at the Bruce might be a dark horse than him and we kind of discussed the pros and cons to someone like flirt. We also got into life without bergeron and Martian as the burns are going through right now. And what it kind of exposes in this bruins lineup. And we also got into the potential of this Frederick Coyle Smith line working. What happens if that's a good line? Does that become the third line? Who slots in up top? So a lot of interesting moving parts with that. We also get into Jack studnica. And what his value is saying with Jacob bruss, what their value is in trades and where they might fit in the lineup. Going forward. So fun episode, as always, remember to go support our friends over at bed online with our promo code CLS 50. Without further ado, here's my conversation. With Conor Ryan. And we're here with Conor Ryan. Connor, what is up? Evan, doing well. How are you doing? Doing great. Doing great. This is too straight weeks of you back on bruins beat. It's like we're getting back in the rhythm of you coming out. Slowly getting you back in the loop on this. But how was your weekend? It was swell. Watch Super Bowl went with, I thought, I hope the Bengals were gonna win, but alas. It was more realistic. I was like, you know what Aaron Donald is going to absolutely obliterate Cincinnati's offensive line? Sure enough it happened. Adds terrible, as always, which like, I feel like it's very much an old old man grape to be like the Super Bowl ads are bad. It's like realistic now. Everyone's got like Twitter and YouTube. People are getting more creative. You don't have to wait for the big game for you to drop like a good ad anymore. So I got 9 understand that comes with a territory, but it was good. No complaints as of when the time this podcast drops. Hopefully be you will be being part champions. We will scrub this audio from the podcast. So fingers crossed there. But how are you doing? How was your weekend Evan? It was great. I actually had to do a bean pot preview video for the championship for the NCAA, and I predicted be you to win. Hurt me to do it. Hurt me to do it, but I did. I had to make a business decision and I did it. It was a good weekend. Fun times, Super Bowl was great. You're right, the ads were terrible. The only ad that I actually remember was the crypto dot com ad with the barcode that went on the screen..

"Because he I got to see how real he was. And I was just, I was just really taken aback by his maturity and how serious he was. And it wasn't like he was saying things like, hey, I'm going to go make the bronze at 18. And I'm not going to sit here and say, I knew he was going to do that and then he was a future Hall of Fame player. But I figured he was going to be something because he was so unlike most of the typical teenagers I had talked to in my draft coverage up until that point, and even since. He had already hired a strength and conditioning coach he had hired a skating coach because he knew his skating was subpar. He was getting stronger, and he understood that, you know, with him, he's not. He wasn't overly tall. So he had to have that strong core. I think what keeps 18 year olds typically from reaching the NHL is not that they're not able to skate or they're skilled enough. It's that they're not strong enough and teams are concerned that with a guy like Jack Hughes. Exactly, right? And it's an 82 game season in teams. If they're drafted a kid in the first round, especially higher, or higher up, they have a really important investment in that player. And so what they don't want to do is ruin their investment by either rushing him too soon getting him hurt and destroying his confidence or any myriad things that could happen if you have an 18 year old in NHL. And so for a kid like bergeron to make it as a second rounder, he obviously had to demonstrate that he had the ability. But I think one of the things that really helped him was his maturity, his focus his intelligence and then ultimately, he was a strong, thick core. You know, he guys would try to hit him and blow him up and he would just absorb it. And he was so smart with a lot of times it wasn't in position to take a direct big body hit and things guys I was talking about these quote unquote shutdown. Stay at home defenseman. He made he made snacks out of those guys because he was just a lot smarter and he wouldn't allow himself to get into that situation where they could physically manhandle, let me stay out of away from their reach and he used his own vision and instincts to make plays against guys like that. And then it just, as he went on, he got he got more experienced and we're so fortunate to witness the tree's burger on his career in Boston because it almost didn't happen. When he got hit from behind by Randy Jones, there was talk that he might not ever be the same player. He might not, you know, and he was one hit away from oblivion. And let's be honest, that hasn't changed. He suffered traumatic brain injury and that stuff always stays in the back of your mind, but what he's been able to do in his career since 2008 when he was late 2007 when he took the hit. He's learned to protect himself better and again is experiencing his awareness has allowed him to play a smart brand of hockey to where he's not necessarily in those positions to where an opponent could put him in a situation where he has career my name..

You're probably just much longer. Then the normal episode I had on Kirk lutke this week for the first time ever. And had him on to discuss the Berlin's defense of issues, some offensive issues. And then we got into a really interesting conversation on Patrice bergeron. The last probably ten to 15 minutes of the show. So it was worth it. It was very worth at the time was worth it. This is very worth your time. He gives awesome insight he's a really smart guy, and he's been doing a hockey journal can't recommend it enough. So he'll be someone that let me know. I think he's someone that we should definitely have on a bit more, very interesting guy. And yeah, so that is today's episode. Hopefully you guys enjoyed it. "I feel like Bertrand's one of those guys that it's not gonna be like Chara where he's gonna retire at 42 and be kind of a journeyman become like a key fourth or third line defensive center like the last stages of his career. I feel like more or less he's gonna read the room. And if it's his standard of play drops, whether it be on ice production or fighting through injuries, I feel like he's just gonna go out on his terms and that wouldn't surprise me at all. It's just going to depend on how many years that is, right? I don't know if the full doom and gloom if he's going to retire after this year is worth one fretting over right now, who knows what happens. We could look at this season and look at his production in April and let's say he's got another 35 goal season 80 points top three in the selkie again. And maybe he still has a few more years left in the tank. But I think you have to be realistic though with the fact that there's only so much that he can keep on producing at this level and whether it be even if it's a thing where he does the year to year plan. So better than him just retiring because as we've talked about before, multiple times with the fact that there's still not a set solution for David Craig's leaving. It produced bergeron also leaves. You're in trouble. You're in big trouble. You are in big trouble. Well, it's funny, brooms fans are taking the bullet, you know, two years ago it was Chara. Then it was crazy this off season. And then if it's bergeron, this up coming off season or anytime soon, it's just Chara, crazy run. Gone. And rask two, most likely. Maybe. Well, they think he's coming back to who knows. But yeah, that's the thing..

"It would be a very strange thing. You mentioned Coyle. Now Coyle talked about he had surgery on his knee. He says, and he's pivotal this year because he has to be that second line center with those kind of surprise announcement that crates you had moved on to play in his native Czech Republic, but Coyle's got to be the second center ready or not. The one thing that does bode well is what he did. And again, everybody who does stuff like this will say these things, we just got to see if it's true. But he says he's alleviated years of knee pain. He's felt he hasn't been himself two to three years. So if there's another gear to Charlie Coyle's game, it would be nice to see it. The version we've seen over the past couple seasons, I don't think is necessarily the answer in that second center position. But are you optimistic that maybe this actually is a thing and he can he can up his game now? Yeah, absolutely. And I think you always have to be cautious around this part of the preseason right where you're in that era where everyone says, you know, they're in the best shape of their life or they did all the right things in the off season. They fill up better, but I think especially for Charlie Coyle where it's not like this has been a thing that kind of popped up late last year. It's a knee injury that has been bothering him for a few years now. And I think it was pretty noticeable last year especially. I mean, even when Charlie Coyle hasn't been a point producing guy, you kind of are used to seeing those kind of trademark shifts from him where he's a puck possession kind of center that can drive play. Didn't see you have that much last year. So if he's able to get healthy and he's kind of invisible a lot of times during the year. Yeah, exactly. He wasn't like the same coal you saw even let's say in the community 19 playoffs. So people to stay healthy and get back to that role and granted, he has a lot of things working in his favor this year, where he's with most likely Taylor hall and Craig Smith. He's able to get kind of that clean slate. Get back to just playing his game and have better finishers next to him. You hope that, you know, it's not like he's going to be the next David creech, but if he can be a productive to see and drive play and hold on to the puck in the ozone, it'll help the bruins at least do what they can to replicate some of that lost production with David creek you leaving. Yeah. So little good news, little bad news. We'll see again in the bergeron isn't necessarily bad news yet, but you do want to hear him say like, oh, I have no. You'd rather you'd rather get the Tom Brady speech from him, which is, oh my goodness. Wait, I feel I want to play till I'm 45. You don't want to hear that he's already year to year now, even though he has every right to be, because again, he's been playing for 18 seasons and you know he's a physical two way guy that doesn't take any shifts off and obviously that's gonna take its toll. He said, numerous surgeries throughout the years and you know he's not the biggest of guys. The fact that he's been able to sustain this level of play is amazing. And he is a marvel. Again, the coil stuff with a grain of salt. Everybody's great in the preseason, so we will see for sure. I want to thank kind of Ryan. I just also want.

"To some of the guys. And a couple little nuggets here that are worth talking about is captain's practices for about a week away, training camp two weeks away. So, you know, we're starting to get into the bruins mix of things. Patrice bergeron. Under contract through this season, we don't know beyond that. It's really hard to imagine a world where Patrice bergeron isn't a brewin. I don't think a lot of people are willing to really want to live in a world where Patrice bergeron is not a Bruin. But when asked about today, hey, what's going to happen next year? Now you've seen, you know, rats may be gone, you know, David Craig. She's moved on. It's weird. You know, it's weird times as you get the turnover. Bergeron really wasn't was pretty noncommittal about his future, you know, beyond this season. I don't know how you took that. Yeah, I don't think bruins chains may be excited for the start of a new season wanted to get this news on the first day. Imagining a future without Patrice bergeron, but it's definitely something that's that you have to weigh if you're a brooms fan in terms of mapping out what to expect going forward with this team. I mean Patrice bergeron as much as last year was another strong year for him. It doesn't seem like he's really slowing down. You have to be realistic with the fact that it's tacked on quite a few miles over the course of his career. And even though, you know, he's been able to still be an elite player. He's still a guy that you expect will probably be at the Olympics this year, still a top line center. You have to imagine whether he's going, I don't think he's going to be a guy like as a Dano Chara where he's going to be a journeyman 42 year old guy, kind of just, you know, going team to team. I think more or less when he knows the time's up. He's going to call it, even if maybe he still has a few more years left in the tank..

"It's obviously this Sunday in Foxborough taking on the Miami Dolphins. It's Mac Jones season. It's really all about Mac obviously for heading into week one. He gave an interview the other day where he said, you know, he's not surprised he was named the patriot starting quarterback. And again, this is a topic of conversation here, you know, how it came about. You spent a lot of time on BS J, breaking down exactly how the Patriots came to this decision. We'll get into that in a minute, but just first off, you know, I hate doing the people are talking. Some people are talking thing. But is this level of confidence something you like to see in your rookie quarterback? Or is it a little bit, you know, could this comment not surprised be construed or to take in the wrong way? Because I like it. I like it. I love it. I love it. I mean, I want my quarterback to be the big alpha male in the locker room. I mean, look, you know, you can say all you want about fitting into the team culture and stuff like that. But every team needs it later. And there's no bigger leader in team sports than the quarterback on a football team. And I love what I've seen out of Mac this summer. I love what I've heard out of them. I mean, he's boring as hell, but that's what you get from two guys who have played for a guy who played for Nick Saban and Bill belt, now Bill Belichick. But he definitely has this quiet cockiness and you know, I think that that cockiness is deserved because it comes from knowledge, knowing that you're prepared when you're prepared and when you do all the work, you should be confident in your own abilities. And that's what I see with Mac Jones. And to me, there's nobody who's more prepared as a young quarterback to play in this league than Mac Jones in recent years. And you mentioned, you know, and we talked about it off the top here. You did a breakdown. And I agree a 1000% is you have to be, you want them to be confident. But he's confident in the right way. He's not saying I've got it all figured out. He's confident in his abilities, but he's also humble knowing he's got a ton to learn and he's got a lot to improve and he's in there like a sponge soaking it up. So I think he's hitting all the right notes with his stuff. So we spent a lot of time breaking down the decision on why exactly Mac Jones was named the starter. A lot of you know, reporters who were going down a camp were saying the max seemed to be ahead throughout both in what you saw in the training camp in the joint practices and the preseason games. Now Greg, you got a look at this coach is all 22 film. Most people don't have access to this. So it's pretty cool stuff and on BS, J and again, reason enough to subscribe. The brownie now going into is 17th season. So it's definitely Testament and title that is absolutely deserved and not a surprise to anyone. No, not a surprise. I think there's a legit case to be made the best thing to happen to Brad. Marchand was Patrice Bergeron. Oh and that first Bergeron really was kind of the the guy that set a guy like Marshawn straight cuz there was a real. It was never like Sagan but you know, like it was known that Marshawn like to have a good time and you know, the the the the celebration after the cop was she was well warranted. I mean you want to kill a cop like absolutely but you know the stuff on the ice and sort of his Antics on it was more on the ice stuff. It was him being AWOL from the Stanley Cup DVD cuz he was not in the state to do his recordings, which it was a great little fact about that video. If you watch it. He doesn't he's not have they always have you know, the talking head things. He's like not in a I don't think cuz like yeah, he wasn't available. So yep. So there's that too. So it's things like that that you know, I think it feels like you know as marshmellows are got older and matured. You know that happens as you get older but I do think that the best thing I think one of em, most, you know responsible pieces for Brad Marchand becoming an elite, you know Point getting Winger in the NHL, which I don't think you know, if you go back to the beginning of the 2010s, I don't think many people pegged Mars is like, you know, a top-five left-winger at some point is career. And here he is. He might particularly might be the best one player. This is arguably argument to be made for that. So a lot of that is Bergeron like that girl was you know, they've been linemates whole time. He reached his best friend on the team, you know, first runs been like the biggest influence on him. So I do think that it's absolutely possible that Bergeron is probably the best thing to happen to Brad Marchand back on and off the ice. So I think Bergeron obviously definitely, you know deserving of the the captaincy, but when you want to make safe bets like Burj Becoming Captain. There's only one place to make a bet like that. And that's betonline.ag absolutely Heaven. Listen up guys. It's an exciting time of the year around the Sports World. We got NFL and college football play-offs are in full swing the NBA is back and sure enough..
