"Did they ever apprehend Todd for this, given that his other accomplices were arrested? They did, because Todd might have been a criminal, but he wasn't a criminal mastermind. So he came back to visit his friends in jail. Some of the cops were like, hey, you look like that guy that ran away. And so he was arrested. And he was along with the other two. Charged with crime and Todd's case, he was charged with a felony. And he was suspended by Joe Paterno for committing that felony or for being charged with that felony. But paterno did not give up on Todd hodden. Paternal, in fact, got Todd hardy a roommate by the name of Fred ragucci, who was known for being straight laced, and he put Todd and Fred together in two 79 Hamilton hall. So that Todd would learn from Fred and learn how to walk the straight path. So Todd gets suspended, that keeps him out of that entire 78 football season. But you're saying he also gets this second chance from Joe Paterno. And during that 78 season, by the way, the football team without Todd Hodgins is great. They march to the national championship game. They're winning all of these games. And one of the fans filling the stands on those Saturdays is the woman we discussed at the very top of the show, Betsy sailor. So tell me more about Betsy Paula, where was she in the fall of 1978? So Betsy sailor was starting her senior year at Penn State. And Betsy was a little bit of an atypical student. She was from the Pittsburgh area. She had a fiance who was 7 years older than she was who lived a couple hours away, she was one of the few women majoring in business administration at the time and she was a very typical Penn State student in the fact that at the time she was a huge fan of the football team and she was a big fan of Joe Paterno. I loved Penn State football. I loved going to the games. The pageantry, the camaraderie. I mean, everything about it. She was proud of the university and she just was living life. And when she arrived for campus that fall, she was in need of a new roommate. And so it's 1978. She did what everyone else did then. She put an ad in the school paper, the daily collegian. It said very simply female roommate needed to share quite apartment in your golf course, rent is $87 and 50 cents plus phone, nonsmokers only call Betsy and her phone number. And she gets several people calling and including two men and there was one who was kind of annoying and asking if she absolutely didn't want to mail her mate kind of just disregarded that one. And then there was another guy who called who said he was calling for his girlfriend and that his girlfriend had registered late and needed a place to live and he wanted to know where her place was. And Betsy told that guy that she was actually going out that he could see the place later. And so that night, this is September now in 1978. Paula, when Betsy returns to her basement apartment after going out, what happened? So she returns home. I went downstairs and put my groceries down and started doing all the silly stuff that you do when you're all by yourself. I was singing loudly and dancing with the refrigerator door and being very much myself. But then, the shock of remembering that I had an 8 o'clock quiz. And I thought, oh, it's midnight. So I went back into my bedroom and the light didn't work. She switches on the light, but it doesn't come on. It's dark. The very next thing I had a hand over my mouth and a knife in my neck. And a person saying to me, if you make a sound, I will kill you. He put his hands around my arms and directed me towards another bedroom threw me down on the bed, face first. He is tying my hands behind my back. He also tied a scarf blindfolded me. He'd asked her where her razor was. And this speaks to Betsy's quick thinking because the last thing she wants is for him to have this razor. She realizes that when men think of shaving, they think of the mirror and the sink, that was another point that I got scared. And I didn't want him to have a razor. I didn't want him to cut me. And I had to think quickly, and I thought, I'm going to take calculated risk. I have my razor that I just unpacked, not so long ago, and my razors in the shower. I'm going to lie. I'm going to tell him that I just moved in and I have not yet unpacked everything and didn't unpack my razor. Knowing full well that he could

"Ever heard before. It is a story that was shrouded in darkness for so long. Tied inextricably to a serial criminal named Todd hardy. A Penn State football player and teammate of irv pankey, who directly benefited from institutional failures. Failures by the criminal justice system and by Penn State university. Failures that in this case are wholly unrelated to the infamy of Jerry sandusky. But as unambiguously awful, as those failures and those crimes are. The story of Betsy and nerve is a story that will also make you feel the exact opposite. I assure you. And you'll have to listen to understand why. So before we get into this story any further, guys, I do want to establish that today's show is based on a story titled untold, which is the single longest story in the history of ESPN dot com. And it's exhaustively reported by Tom Juno and Paul Levine to award winning writers who I am very grateful to have on the show with me. So thank you for joining us, both of you. It's great to be on Pablo. Yeah, thanks for the opportunity. So your story focuses on the crimes committed over years by a former Penn State football player named Todd hoddy. And this is a story that had gone. Essentially untold for decades. And the story within that story is that of Betsy sailor and irv pankey, which is very different. But the one thing that ties all of this together is Penn State football. And specifically Penn State football in the 70s. So could you explain that era and just the state of that hugely famous program at that time? So it is 1978 to be specific. Penn State football is as big as it could be at the time. I mean, paterno is has been there about 12 years. He is being elevated along with the team by the national media. Everybody's talking about his grand experiment of combining these quality academics and athletics and he's profiled everywhere and he's becoming the icon. And it is the thing in State College. It is the reason that State College exists. The football players are on campus. They are the gods, the icons, like state colleges, on the map because of Joe Paterno and Penn State football. Two wide receivers of the right, fourth and two at the pit four. Here goes Goldman. This is the season where Penn State is playing for the national championship. 19. I will say nothing. They're going undefeated and they are at the top of the rankings and of the polls from the very beginning. And paterno is making speeches about how good the team is and that they're playing for the national championship. By the end of the season, 60 minutes does a whole profile on Joe Paterno and about if he doesn't win the national championship, we'll then maybe he should because he's such a good man. Go paterno and his idea that football can be fun on Saturdays and football can be part of an education gets his chance to prove that football can be fun. Even on New Year's Day. If he's not number one, maybe he should. And so we have peak Joe Paterno, we have peak Penn State, this all time program winning national plaudits for being the model of how to do this well Tom. And so Todd hardy, who is the player at the center of the hearing that we started off with, the man you profiled deeply for this story, how do you begin to explain him? Well, I think it's really difficult to explain a guy like Todd. Let me just go back to the beginning of how I got involved in this story. I think that's the bit really the best way to I think that's the best way to do it. So I played football against Todd against Todd hartney on Long Island in the late 70s, Todd had me played for saint Dominic's. They had a parade all American quarterback, named Tony cappa zoli, and they had a linebacker who was the Dick Butkus, the TJ watt of Long Island, a linebacker whose very name caused opponents to sort of reconsider. He was 6 two. He was two 40 and he was known far and wide for being a hitter. And for being ruthless. But this guy that you knew personally that you had heard and felt the legend of the notoriety of, it doesn't sound like that notoriety stopped at the end of the football field. It didn't. Todd was an intimidator on the football field and he was an intimidator off the football field. Todd was known as a guy who used to show up at parties and starts fights with broken beer bottles. Todd was always sort of a guy on the edge, he was definitely a guy that you didn't want to mess with. People were scared of Todd hardening. I talked to one of his coaches and he had said that Todd's off the field exploits were well known among the saint Dominic's coaching staff. But when Penn State came around, it was not something that was talked about. And when we talked to one of the Penn State coaches about Todd hodden, he had said, well, he was a good kid. He was known as a good kid if he wasn't a good kid. We never would have brought him to Penn State. It was sort of like, if he went to Penn State, then by definition, he was a good kid because he was part of the big paternal experiment. The guy who got the Penn State stamp of approval, had he ever actually got involved with criminal behavior? Did he have a record? Todd hardy was robbing houses on Long Island doing breaking and entering when he was a sophomore in high school. The cops investigated, they basically did a an intervention in which he was told to return the stolen goods. He was into stealing stereos. But he was not ever charged with it. And how long did it take for this kind of stuff to show up at Penn State? Not long at all, as it turns out, I talked to Todd's roommate, Todd was getting away with stuff really from the very beginning. But that was all, I think, pretty private until June of 1978 when a couple of friends from Long Island came down and Todd convinced them to go and commit a robbery. They went to a record store that Todd had become accustomed to stealing stuff from. He used to steal records by putting them under his jacket. And he went to the store on a Sunday morning with his friends. They broke in, they committed a robbery, and they got caught. Some people who were nearby the record store reported it at the cops came. The two friends were caught. But taught escape by running right through the cops and is one of the friends said afterwards, taught escape because by this time he was a criminal. He knew how to escape because he was a criminal.

"Athletes, sports, politicians, sports celebrities, couldn't come up with the word athletes. For promotion, that's not a bad thing. Because FTX did it badly. That doesn't mean that it's a bad thing to bring on promoters. By instruction imagination. There's a big Reddit thread about, you know, if you now that FTX had athletes, if you bring athletes into crypto, it's going to make you look bad. No, no, no, no, no. FTX looks bad. FTX made these athletes look bad. If you have someone that's not trying to, you know, not trying to scam everybody, like they were, then, you know, it made everybody look bad. It made everybody look bad for sure. Except for us. We're the only person, FDX didn't make it look bad. Actually, it made me look really good, believe it or not. But here's a comment. If you lost money in FTX, you should demand an apology from Kevin O'Leary. He says SPF who literally stole your money as a good guy regardless. 9 ads ten people tell you it's a good guy. Everyone should tag him and let him know you're a real person who lost money because SPF stole it. Here's the video, I'm sorry, but officially F Kevin O'Leary, officially. I kind of like similar with SPF. I didn't have my mind made up on him. I have now made it up now. What you see in this video? Is Joe Paterno defending Jerry sandusky? That's what you see here. That's what this man is doing. I guarantee you, if you went to every person in new Jerry sandusky in his life. And you said, is he a good person or a bad person? I bet you 9 out of ten people have told you it's a good person. Maybe even more than that. You know who wouldn't have said it? The kids he was molesting. Their parents. They wouldn't have said it. They're the minority, I'm sure.

"He does not like Russians. So I make a lot of comments on there about the Russians and you can get kicked off Twitter for criticizing Russia? Well, it was more than a little criticizing. That was celebrating an attack that really decimated some Russians. So maybe it was, I don't think it was anything. The president of the United States of America called the president or the head of Russia, a thug in a terrorist. Well, this was a comment about a Russian who didn't have a head. So I think I know what you're talking about. So you celebrated the death of the Putin whisperer, absolutely. Okay. Well, but Paul, one other thing. You said you hated to explain what lay away was to your listeners. Do you not study your demographics? Do you know your listeners are accepted scenarios and oxygen areas? They probably grew up with layaway. I did. Well, I wasn't sure. Again, I just assumed there are a lot of young people watching who had no idea what we were talking about. Well, that's true. You get some 12 year old callers. But anyway, Paul, looking forward to that great Notre-Dame northwestern game this weekend. I'm getting up to him. And I did see a game in Ireland. I saw Notre-Dame play navy that create park in Ireland. It's pretty cool. I think it was 96. Yeah, no, they were supposed to play last year or the year before. The COVID year, I believe. Hey, thanks for the call. Appreciate it. Vince is up next. Hey, Vince. Didn't hear Vince. How about Chris in West Virginia? Hello, Chris. Hello, mister fam, bomb. How are you today? Very well. Thank you. Mister fine ball. I'm going to pick your brain a little bit. Okay. Like you said, I'm from West Virginia. And since about 1986, when I started watching college football. It seems being obviously a lot of great coaches. I've seen Jimmy Johnson, those like you mentioned Lou holtz, let's see Pete Carroll's pretty good coach. Would you say that old Nick Saban and our West Virginia boy would you say he's the best of all time? Chris, I would say that, and I say that because I was, I felt like I was privy or privileged to cover briefly. The prior coach who was considered that title. So yeah, I don't think anybody is, I mean, they're different people, Paul Bryan and Nick Saban, but I think almost everyone acknowledges what you said. Yeah, I know I forgot to mention Joe Paterno, Bobby bowden, coach is like that, you know, that I've seen since about 86, but I, from what I've seen, Nick Saban, fellow West Virginia mountain near like me, Nick Saban. I'm thinking he's the best that I've seen since around 1986. Would you agree? Chris, I would totally agree. And I don't think this is something really in dispute. Okay. I am glad we got that cleared up. Randy, were you concerned that someone thought that Sabin was not the best coach of all time? No. Okay. I always hate when there's disagreement on that subject. How about Jim? In North Carolina. Hey Paul, how are you today? Hey there, Jim. Look. I've got a couple of issues. They're not issues. This is comments. And then I've got one question. I'll let you do your thing. I called, then I flipped on your channel because I like to catch it when I can because I love your show. Thank you. Thank you. Tuscaloosa, Jim. He was in the first part of his rant about what he knew about football. Okay, so that was my main reason in college. And I'm a displaced Ohio State fan in North Carolina. That's a fact. So let's just get that out of the way. But if he knew everything about football, he sounded like he was a longtime caller or whatever. If he knew everything about football, I'm confident he didn't believe Alabama would get beat by a House state. In the semifinals, we know how state one first football championship. That's my comment there. The other gym, this is the gym day from hell, I guess. The other GM was talking about Ohio State football. And the first mistake, I believe you made, was not mentioned in woody Hayes at the time of the list, okay? That is what it is. Woody Hayes had one bad moment. And that's when he went out there and tried to knock out clips and linebacker. And one other comment, I called in, wow. Tuscaloosa was having his rant. And somehow, y'all took him before me. So maybe you never need to check your door guy. Now, after that's all being said, here's what I would like to ask. I'm going to go ahead and hang up and let you do your thing. How do you feel about Ohio State this year? Have a great day. Thank you very much, Jim. Yeah, I'll quote what some of the other people have already said here. I mean, Alabama is the preseason favorite. It's pretty overwhelming, but Ohio State is clearly the number two team. And I always hate to say, I mean, I think Alabama will win it all, but if they don't, then I would put my second bet on how state, I think they are potentially that good. Thanks for the call. Appreciate it. We've had a busy one. We're not done yet. A couple more guests to go, including your phone calls right after this. Holy cow, what a ball game we appeared at night in puck ducking. "But I thought going in, I thought, let's go. I mean, we talked a lot about the last dance, bringing when that was being shopped around. And I was like, I really felt passionately because I had seen it happen with 30 for 30 that, that kind of IP was worth more than a movie. You know? And at the time, I was like, wow, my cost 15, 20 million. It's like so what? Like, this will be worth like 50 million to you guys. You guys will have it forever. And ESPN and Netflix, they just weren't going to let that lose. And I don't think HBO really saw it in that way because they didn't, you know, maybe they didn't have the right people thinking about it. I think eventually they did. You know, I think, I mean, Casey's Casey was the guy who canceled my show. I love Casey. I think he's one of the best. And initially, when I pitch music box to them, which it was trying to borrow some of the stuff that worked for ESPN. And trying to leverage the pedigree I had in the space for better or worse and then really trying to create a brand for them. And the big thing I pointed to is I was pitching to them was they just done this Joe Paterno movie. That Al Pacino was in. It was a good movie. And it costs like, I don't know, 25 million bucks and was on on a Saturday and it was an hour 45 minutes, and it goes away. And I was like, we could make a music documentary series that for the same money that paterno movie, maybe even less, and you guys could create a franchise that's on for 20 years. Why wouldn't we do that? And I laid out all these different ideas and how it would work and to their credit platform saw it in case you really liked it. And we were off. I think what I underestimated was how hard it was to get even 6 documentaries done in music. That's I mean, that's a whole other. Between the artists and the labels and the rights and I mean, holy shit. Yeah, the managers and Jesus. But we were early with the idea and by the time we got it done the IP thing and totally changed and documentaries had blown up..

"Adopts a student status quo of how we address these type of incidents that enables bad actions to happen and good people not to do the right thing or not to do as much as they could. And I think that is when you look at these and why we felt so important to draw that connection, this is another one of those cases where you have a pattern of behavior with honey with we're not going to talk about this. This guy's gone away. We're never going to have to deal with it again. This was just an anomaly. And then you sort of have that level of silence that level of, you know, we have someone in the story, a former administrator with university saying, hey, you know, Joe didn't want these things to come out. It was better for the program if they didn't. And that becomes practice. And that is not helpful. It is harmful when you are trying to prevent these things from happening in the future. And you can see how that played out at Baylor. You can see how it played out at Michigan state. You can see how it plays out everywhere else. I mean, it's a pattern, and it's a disturbing one. It's a complicated situation, and it occurs to me. We haven't actually laid out the timeline here yet for people who haven't read the story. He was, you know, he was, he raped multiple women on the Penn State campus, only one of those cases was actually prosecuted, he was convicted, and in a most probably amazing stuff. Disgusting and shocking part of your whole story is that he's convicted of rape and the judge lets him go free until the sentencing. And which just leads to this awful awful crime spree in Long Island. So when you talk about kind of culpability of the university, Joe Paterno's name comes up a lot in this story. I'm going to try to put myself in the even though it's uncomfortable and the shoes of if I'm a Penn State fan who still feels a lot of loyalty to Joe Paterno. And might say, well, he kicked the guy off the team, he couldn't have stopped him from doing this. Why are you bringing paterno into the story? Explain why you thought that was an important thread to maintain. Well, I think it's worth noting. He did not kick him off the team because of this incident. In the summer of 78, Todd hardy got busted for breaking into a record store. And so that's what got him suspended. But he was still even though he was not playing. He was still with the team. And maternal had him room with sort of a straight arrow on the team and had made a comment publicly saying like, look, you know, I hope that he learns from him his mistake and left the door open to him having like paterno did with a lot of guys who got into trouble. There is an opportunity for redemption. So it's not as though when this happened, honey had been completely separated from all things, you know, Penn State football. From beginning to end with the case in State College, paternal was involved. I mean, he was the first person that State College PD called when they issued a warrant for hobbies arrest. He spoke to the players about testifying, you know, who could testify when they could go, he was, he was definitely. Now, at the same time, there was a player who said he was going to go testify on his behalf and paternal said, if you do that, I'm kicking you off the team. And I think what, at the end of the day, the criticism that the survivors and others have about paterno is that there was a real lack of acknowledgment. And, you know, you can as a fan, you can argue whether or not he was obligated to do that. But he talks about players, bad behavior, and using them as an example for, you know, to deter behavior and others, he does not do that with Todd hobby. And one of the mother of one of the victims, the mother is now 84, this is still something that doesn't sit well with her. She's like, why couldn't he have at least called an acknowledge this and said something? Like, the fact that it seems like even though he was not going to stand up and defend Todd had me, there was also no acknowledgment that this had happened. And it was basically like how quickly can I get separate from this and never have to talk about it again? And there was an opportunity to learn from this and to use this as some way to make the system better in some way to try to reach out to these women or he had more power than anybody. And that's where the criticism is that that wasn't there. And it's not just on paternity. It's on the university as a whole. One of the things that I think came up and it came up a lot ten years ago and it definitely resurfaces in this is a lot of times when we and we as the media and we as a society kind of associate somebody having high levels of success with this all knowing wisdom or something. And I thought was interesting later in the story you bring up that Joe Paterno Sanjay had talked about in a book later about Joe Paterno's struggles talking about and dealing with matters of sex and how squeamish she was and you kind of get some of these like you just kind of recoil when you see it and it's out of ignorance and it's probably out of you could rationalize it in a bunch of different ways. But I think some of this is rooted in just like an ignorance where it's like they compartmentalize it even like, oh, it's not going to be our problem anymore. We've watched our hands of it and then all of a sudden the thing that of all the things that are tragic in there and there are many is especially the judge's decision, all of a sudden all the other horrific stuff and the lives that get ruined and taken because somebody didn't do enough. And the one part of this story where it was like it felt uplifting in this was and as a reader, I remember pankey's name just as a young kid. He was an offensive lineman in the NFL. I didn't know he played a Penn State. I just remembered the name. And when you start to get it, you guys start to get into the relationship he has with one of the survivors..

I understand sometimes when you're in the 8th game of the season and everybody's talking about the 9th game and you don't care because but this is different. But Alabama won't even know who their opponent is when this game is going on. Hey, thanks for the call. Appreciate it very, very much. See, Mike is up next in Kentucky, how am I? Hey, good afternoon, Paul. Hey, you know, you're wearing the exact three shades of gray that I just remodeled the whole living room. It's funny, I went to a rummage sale the other day. This was from the movie Fifty Shades of Grey. I just picked it up for about 50 bucks. The whole outfit. Gray must be coming in. Your tie is the exact same colors, the porcelain towel, I'll lay around the heart or the wood stove goes in the for you. Your coat is the exact same charcoal gray as the walls in your shirts just a hair darker than the walls. Yeah. So if I can get you mound, if I could get you mounted and put a lampshade on your head you'd make a pretty nice accessory. Yeah, so people are picking out their tight newlyweds picking out their title, they can just point to my shirt and go, okay, that's the color I want in the bathroom. There you go. I want to talk about the college playoffs. Paul, it's refreshing to see two new teams making their maiden voyage into the college playoffs this year. I think Michigan and Alabama will make for a compelling championship. I can't see Georgia getting in. I just can't curve smart has proven time and time again when the lights are bright and the stakes are high. He can't coach a fat man to a free dinner ball, roll that gum. Is that an Alabama fan wishful thinking or is that really how they think? Steven is up next to hello, Steven. Well, thank you. Listen, I call about a year ago about the name image likeness thing. I've been thinking about Jim Thorpe, who was an American Indian who set several. Olympic medals in many places later in the NFL, but he lost his Olympic medals because he had played semi pro ball. Right. With the revision of the name image was there pretty possibility that he might get a somebody might restore his mills. It's just a hypothetical question. It's a great, it's a great, it's a great question, but I'm not sure how it would be applicable though because you have college rules are going to be a little bit different than what we're talking about here is the International Olympic Committee making a ruling based on something that has happened in the NCAA. And I think you could easily argue that you have absolutely nothing to do with one another. Hey, thanks for the call. I appreciate it. Ralph stokes. Legendary player at Alabama, part of the.

"I don't know their secondary seems to get discombobulated at times and they have given up some passing yards. But I got a feeling they're going to be there at the end of the season. They'll be fighting for the national championship. Coach finally, I want to so much is going to be made this weekend, even though they're not playing. Nick Saban addressed it again today. Sunday, he will turn 70. Whatever that means, but you face Bobby bowden, who coached until his 80s, Joe Paterno, someone you coached against. Can you help us understand I mean, is age a number or does it really matter? It doesn't matter Nick, say Ben, one time I was talking with him about, I don't know. 7, 8 years ago. And he was asking me, my last year I was 70. And I said, he wasn't 70. It was when we started losing and if he ever loses three games in a season, he might start to think, you know, I don't need to do this anymore. But as long as they're recruiting the way they are all the players they've got, he can go another ten years easy if he must do. Well, you just ruined a lot of dinners for SEC coaches around the south. Coach, it's so great to see you. Hope to see you this weekend. And keep on being Steve Smith. Over in the where the old gator bowl in Jacksonville should be a nice weather game and full stadium looking forward to watching it. We can't wait. Thank you, coach. The one and always good to see you. As always, one of.

"Today that's geico dot com. Welcome in find bombers elissa lang. Dreyer carter here with you out of pocket tonight. Seven o'clock right here on the sec network and we have a jam packed show. But we're also gonna talk about where we were at last weekend. I was at missouri kentucky. You were in auburn for the first time. And i think there's some takeaways for both of us from our respective matchup stray. I was so impressed. With the way kentucky came out and performed getting that dub but on the other side too you know a lot of people will talk about. How kentucky truly did have the momentum for most of that game on saturday night but eli drink wits and that missouri team answered every single. Blow that kentucky through with them that night. That was a great way to start the conference season in lexington but kentucky's for real and if the chips fall certain ways i could not would not be surprised to maybe see them vying for second. Maybe i in the sec's. i spent. I spent some time with chris. Rodriquez earlier in the season spent a lot of time with him. You interviewed him after the game. But what did you see from him. He fumbled he bounced back. And when you talk to them after the game just what kind of field you get from him. He is such a humble dude. And i know we talked about that last week with your piece. He is one of those leaders that you want on your football team first of all because you mentioned it. He fumbled the football. In what could have been really that dagger touchdown going into half. Then he comes out in the second half and absolutely makes up for it. He had a career high and carries that night. We thought he was going to have four touchdowns. He fumbled one. That cox felons technically only has three touchdowns but he talked about it after the game. Hey you know when kasey smoke maybe put the ball on the ground on his face making sure that he knows what he's supposed to do what he's capable of. He said smoke did the same exact thing. So that's a one two punch tandem. I know you love and the rest of big blue nation does do well speaking of one two punch tandem and running back. That's what i saw from auburn auburn. When you talk about tank bixby right. He's kind of that veteran. He's strong he can get through the holes and just power through darkwa. Hunter is a freshman that was dominant. I mean he had a ninety three yard touchdown run. Set the record for longest touchdown run in auburn history. Such a humble guy right. And and i was really impressed by auburn because you know coach. Hartson challenge them after week. One challenged their second secondary and challenge their special teams and then they come out against alabama state huge plays on special teams blocked blocked field goal and they had know interception pick six just the coverage the way that he challenged the team. They responded and did exactly what he wanted them to do. Now alabama state wasn't the strongest of opponents but to still come out an answer. What your coach calls you to do. Even against the lesser opponent. And i think a big deal and for auburn to put up the sheer amount of points that they put us through the first two weeks of the season. That's gonna give any team confidence but it's great timing for an auburn team. That's now going into an insane environment. Dre up in penn state. It's going to be a big test for that football team. But in talking to brian hartson and talking to the guys after that game did you get a sense for how confident they are going on the road against an opponent like that. I think they are confident because they have a strong run game. I think you know. Their quarterback is steady and he's got a show consistency but he's done that so far and then they have a lot of confidence in their defense. I mean just the defense and energy. And i think as a unit they feel like they have a complete team. Something that will talk about tonight out of bucket. Yeah we're going to get into that game. Of course obama florida going down in up. We have a jam packed. Show like we said. But i'm really excited for the guests that were having on tonight. Lane kiffin excellent king of twitter. You took a stroll through his twitter page yesterday. Would i love the rat. poison. I love the re tweets. I love how he even shows support for some of the sec coaches just quote seat with a heart rate. It's simple but it's strong. His presence on twitter henry toyoto. Yeah yeah we got. Joe is coming on the show. Alabama defensive guy who of course helps make that unit take. I'm just you you mentioned re tweets in rat poison and a half to pump this. Yeah we are literally going to play a game called re tweet or rat poison. We lane kip and get to know coach. A little bit better. Maybe talk. Matt corral heisman university in just a little bit re tweet irap poison and everyone's favorite artists right now. Walker hayes on a date not gonna sing. I'm not going to sing on the show. I'm not gonna sing right now but we do interview. It's three gonna walk. We're gonna loaded show. Please come hang out. Do your dances with walker as we'll see it seven out of pocket. We are back We've had a fantastic program. Dj jefferson the arkansas starting quarterback with a couple of hours k. jefferson who's dj k. J just gave you a new name thank you thank me for it. case jefferson shorting us earlier. It's been so lie. I forgot his name He was with us. And more of your phone calls andy staples or is it. I think timing is everything for him. There are a couple of other places that i believe. He would be extremely coveted. But yeah i mean it's hard to say no to your to your school. One of those. They know the importance of texas austin saw dame to recruiting not not trying to win those texas recruits and arkansas. Victory goes a long way to try to do that. I remember remember that they back in the day. When oklahoma pay texas and texas played off saw they really looked like texas highschool all star games. Everybody came from texas. I don't know if you remember that those. A lot of texas place There's no question Texas arkansas made a living and that was one reason that many gay for a little bit of a resistance to frank breuls when they came over to the sec because that wall were shut down and it affected arkansas for for significantly long period of time. Right one thing. I can't believe i got beat up by. Some guy was prop up less miles for a coaching job. That was new. Look on your face with precious. Ever get a chance to look at it. Hey listen jim. And i always appreciated joke turn up and like he got a raw deal at penn state and maybe some of that. Smooths over. and everything's better. But i've been excited about this game for a little bit and i i do believe i'll bring up there and play with penn state and it's not like auburn's never been on the road game and i believe auburn boulevard and win that they don't they don't need one more point that's all they can you. Can you buy a point. You can in las vegas. But they don't count but you know. I'm glad to see the obama fans of tony back down and nick scott. Other than the fact that i was once i was wanting tuscaloosa. And they had a shoeshine guy and he shied shy shoes. Any went right into savings office and china's hair but other than that. I have no way to confirm that store. Well he's making the money he could beat them by some of that affordable steph to stay on longer than the week maybe try some of that hair downside. What do you recommend. I've never used her diving. I'm thinking about it. Tell you that like real good you you got that you've got that down pat and i tell you what you know. A lot of people would shaver head. But what you do with. Your hair has got a class about it. That is second to none of. What's really depressing. Though man at my age. The fact that i i don't have to use hair dye but i don't really have enough hair even if i did use hair dye to use it. Well the good thing is you still need to go home. I i do not use a comb. I wanna make and when a lot of times you'll do to new york or somewhere. We're doing well. Thank you my dad. And i loved you. Your column registering eighty. No thank you. I had a couple of questions for you The you think alabama would've won the ninety two championship if bill. Oliver hadn't been there and if he hadn't gone to auburn would he had been named successor stallings. Those are really good questions. Curtis curtis i do think with all due respect to gene stallings That bill oliver's was the architect of that national championship victory. I know he was. Because i agree with paul. I sat long story short. He was thinking about a book one day and we met and because i was not sure whether it was a good idea or not so we met one afternoon and he spent the entire two three hours going through that that front that he put up against Against to us. Who was the quarterback. Gino toronto and it was just fascinating. The whole So i i really do believe that. And had he not gone. I think he would have been the successor. Yes okay well. "Philip is up next in georgia. Hello philip hello hey good afternoon. Hey paul i have watched your show for many many many years. I am from alabama live. Grew up in talladega huey down but yet i have been in georgia for thirty years now and i was listening to the man. Talk about the arrogance that the alabama fan or there's arrogance would every program. I mean there's people that are like that however most of the alabama fans. We know that any given saturday anything can happen alabama. They've been a juggernaut for a while. Now but yeah we we've had our. We've had our mike years. And and you know what i mean by mike yashar do price studios and we can continue but nevertheless you know i am. Every time they go out on the field On any given saturday anything can happen and and they're talking about there's no respect going into the swap will not be easy. I do believe alabama is going to win but all these alabama fans that people talk about. We're not a bunch of yahoos that think that alabama can't be beat. I know that there's that minority there but every time they go out we know anything can happen. I mean just last week. We watched what took place with. You know jacksonville state or we can go back. Everybody talks about michigan and Appalachian state but You know we know. We're not oblivious to what can happen. And i know you've lived in alabama and i listened to you years ago in birmingham but I just i. there's this misnomer that will either were already next. We don't and we've got this air gets and we think that nothing can happen though i respect. What georgia i respect. Kentucky's doing And it pains me to say. But i even respect. What alridge done even though they played it through your teams. I am curious to see what's gonna take place this weekend but anyway paul. It's great to actually do this. I've listened to you. And i said i'll never call but i had to call today. Well philip. I'm really glad you did. Thank you so much. And you'll be well and let me hear from you again. And i want to say something. About what buddy. Martin said in response to john taty i. John did not come on here yesterday. You know like a bull in a china shop wanting to disk florida. I asked him the question What i wanted was what is the read on what you hear He's he's a reporter. He's a columnist. He was giving me the buzz from there and he wasn't saying anything more he he wasn't saying i disrespect florida. He wasn't saying i. I don't understand the swab. The guys are smart reporter and columnist. He everyone knows. What the swamps all about and i felt i maybe buddy was indicating that he he needs to do his homework. He doesn't need to do his homework. He was just simply answering question. That's all and the question was asked by me. Because i wanted to know what do alabama fans think. This is a big deal to go to the swab. And the answer is no They expect to win. That's every game and this is the new. This is not your your You know the the the three. Mike's coaching anymore. Th i mean this is nick sabin you know. Way way. Deep into his tenure. Hey thanks for the call. Appreciate that one. Let me check in with jay. Who is in georgia. Hello j. ball. Hey they're a first time caller but Longtime viewer thank Got a couple of questions for you. But i always give you a more call more often. Only give you little brief history. She bear with me. i'm from tallahassee alabama fifty miles from the infamous Serial serial killer. Mr dime sure And i played football for harming lost tyler. Watts father birmingham alabama but idiot moves the bream in georgia and we we We had a football team. Lost to george rogers I know you're familiar with that name or as not at south carolina anymore. No they got a lot of running backs but He's not there. Don't say that fair too well when he was with us georgina. but drag my point Short hours a in house salesman with Hubbard company was sales. They've nari launched with a bear bryant in William sanderson. I was now. So's dealers the alabama there and we had some nice conversations but Has your question to ask you. When did you graduate from newark to see Paul it's so long ago. I can't remember but the leaders in one thousand nine hundred seventy spot all star but I know back. In the seventies specially miami in tennessee were really all travels and they both had teams as kind of wondered what i graduated at the end of the seventies and. I'll never forget my first Year at tennessee. We camped out for alabama tickets all night. you're from opened. The they opened the door at eleven o'clock and the tickets didn't go go go were made available to eight in the morning. That's how important that game was. And it was it was the defining weekend of the year. Those two times that alabama came up to neilan stadium and got to birmingham couple years later it was still that way and it remained that way for a very long time it sadly. It's not that way anymore. I agree. I agree I'm sixty three years old but i remember phillip kind of took little thunder from. It's one of my questions I do remember back in eighties Well we had some gang. I mean smears that we we didn't do polar for alabama standards in is a realist. I knew i was worried about vanderbilt and kentucky. Back in those days well Because kentucky both beat alabama i. I've seen. I've seen that happen at least once for kentucky and i know at least one kentucky beat alabama in when might do bose was there as well and i know vanderbilt beat alabama. I vaguely remember seeing the game. I can't remember may have been early in. Ray perkins tenure. Hey thank you so much for the call. It's really good to hear from you and let me What what did i just. Yeah i i was about to go to somebody holding on and i hung up on the guy by accident. So if you're the guy that been been on hold for two hours. And i just hung up on you. I don't know if i'll ever be able to apologize enough. I was going to call her. And somebody said something. Pull my hand up. And i i lost a guy. I feel terrible. Which should i do resign. My resignation will be on somebody's door tomorrow morning. We'll be right back.

"But you know auburn's got a great program and it'd be a great big tennessee. Matchup that will be watched. You know You know the the sec right now is five and two against the alliance so far this be another one of those games. Everybody watching kind of measure to balance those schools I'm really looking forward to one last thing. On on your dad i don't mean to obsess over that but it's kind of hard not to what was i. I know I saw he. He encouraged by so many times together. What was their relationship like off the field. It was. It was really good. I mean coach bryant. You know you're talking to a guy right now who answered the phone at his house. One time coach bryan called that. I wasn't exactly sure what the i knew was immediately. I didn't i knew i knew. Call talk to me. So i went got my dad. I mean those are the things that i i have a letter from. Komo's brian i wrote to him when i was in seventh grade of national library week and he sent it back to send me a letter back which has been framed and hung in every office. I've ever had So there was a really great. Religion goes bryant with generous with his time with my dad taught in the two of them. Were talk about certain issues related Make coach bryan son back in ninety four and he told me you know When when his dad retired one things he said he wanted to do was go up and watch practice penn state and go to a game. Though that he wasn't coaching he just really liked that environment. so i mean just a tremendous amount of respect back and forth speaking of letters. I dunno if i've ever told you this Your dad i it was. It was early my radio career. He had a book. I'm sure you remember. It was a big book new york times bestseller and somehow we were able book him for our show and it was like a big deal army show and afterwards i wrote him a letter. I didn't think he'd ever see it as a dear coach for tarnaud whatever it was such a thrill to have you on our show and he wrote me back. But you know how i was. I was hoping if he wrote me back. It'd be on joe paterno stationary do you. Do you know what he did. He wrote me back using the same stationary. That i sent him a little. Thanks very much enjoyed it Joe paternal my going was he. Always that Cognizant of not wasting any paper know what he wanted people know that he sought. Okay got it. He is funny story. Dick for meal used to do. Abc gates sure and in nineteen ninety. Three he had come up in the summer because he had a hunting camp near state college and he spent time with the coaches. And we're planning iowa we'd beat up thirty one. Nothing run for like smarter yards passing struggled. So dick doesn't realize he's on the air and he says the musburger god penn state's passing gamed son home and his wife said you know what you said on the air and he said no and he was mortified. So we wrote joel letter. Just like you're talking about and josephine letter back with a note that said. Hey dick thanks for. I appreciate it but you're right it did so. So that's that's something he did all the time and you know it's 'cause he read almost everything that came. He just took the time to do it. Was that just old school. You know being old school and remembering where he came from. Yeah probably i mean he just you know the thing about him is he was very accessible. I mean the number of people run into the day when i was in school. I was walking across campus. "paterno" Discussed on The Paul Finebaum Show

"The pride passion and pageantry of college football leaves here. This is the paul finebaum. Show our three podcast. We welcome all of you back. It's great to have you here and we are really looking forward. To our next guest he is jay fraternal Does not need much of an introduction but You know he certainly has seen his share of memorable penn state moments. He's now a trustee at penn state and jay. Thank you very much for being with us. how are you and i know. Everyone is looking forward to the weekend. I'm doing great. But i'll let you know how really doing about midnight eastern time on saturday night. Then i'll know how really first of all j. i wanna talk about the whiteout. It's become it seems like it's become somewhat of a newer sensation in college football. Although i know it's not what. What is the genesis of this. Well guidos the lia was penn state. Back in the early two thousands. We did a white out against purdue and four and did not win the next year We came back and started out five. No and i was driving home. Sunday night From the office. About eleven o'clock at night and i'm going around the stadium and i noticed by eight or ten ten there and we already decided we're gonna have a student but For a moment. I pause realized that these students were camping out for nick. Saturday's game against the highest state. And i call wheeler to leah. And i said you're not going to believe us. There's tension so guido immediately knew the universe would make the move. They know about it so he called the media and made sure this became a media story and it became like a land rush All day monday so by the time the university get your hands around there were hundreds of tents there and the white out and we ended up beaten ohio state and really memorable game and it really took off from there and if you look at five months later the miami heat me. Nba finals the white out. So we knew we had hit on something and two years later against notre dame. We went to the full stadium white out. And it's really. It's become quite a thing i mean. It is so spectacular to see on television. What is it like being there. On the field or in the stands. It's really it's it's incredible because at an an a night game. It's really most effective at night because the white teachers really pop. You know people have done blackouts and read outs and outs and stuff. michigan's maze out is probably the color that is closest to popping on the tv tv screens. Like it does but You know this is one of those things years ago. People started saying you better by an hdtv show along spin better getting hdtv to watch out for penn state game because it is spectacular. And when you're in there What it really does is it. Creates a uniform for your fans to understand their part of the effort and they may get a couple of penalties for to the throne team. So that's really what's kind of taken on this sense of belonging and It really is. It's the auburn fans. That are coming out. I mean we're a white shirt that has auburn on it because of the flood j. in terms of determining which game i know ohio state has has been the game lately On the other on the even. Let's say the odd years How is it determined accused. You've been ohio state or michigan in Used to be. We try to focus on early season game because the weather was better usually It gets a little chilly up here of emperor on occasion So we tried to earlier because most people don't own white coats up in this part of pennsylvania heavy coats that people tend to be orange. 'cause they use them behind in the white house and another enough. I know a lot of hundreds of auburn and you know with the orange. That kind of blended i speak to them. You've seen the movie the deer hunter you from the seventies you. Can you can figure out what what what hunting like in pennsylvania. Okay so let's talk about this penn state team You know james franken's all over the news. I want to get to that in a second. But what we saw them against wisconsin. They look pretty good. What is your assessment. I think the jury is still out. I'm not sure how. I don't think we've played a great offense of football team. Got wisconsin not a great offense. The good good really go offensive. Line i don't think wisconsin is good at running back they've been i think that'll change saturday night. Tanks thanks be as a difference maker running back. I think look a tape. I think bo nixon's better. Bow knicks is better than Than maybe merchants at this point. And i think the offense of winds are similar. I think again I think the the white outnumber eleven has got to step up to this offense Saturday because penn state they tackle well They've been a little vulnerable. Run game front. Wisconsin sabre run the ball against But turnovers turnovers have been the key thing. They've gotten five pence he's got five turnovers and not giving up and and if if auburn play off to play clean game just talking to jay paterno who not only played at penn state but coach there for so many years for his father jay. I'm i'm curious about this. The game the game against auburn. Because i i know. Because i was there so many times with alabama that You know your dad loved these type of the game. We don't see as many anymore. This is the first time. I think auburn's played a big ten team on the road since the thirties. I'm curious as you go back on your use and your your time Growing up and then later as a coach at penn state You know what you remember about games like this and how special they have been at as a part of penn state football this. This is why you wanna be a part of of any kind of program like this. You know you know playing ball state and no disrespect to ball state. It doesn't move the needle like vista especially sec teams because it's prayer For years my dad tried to get home in homes with georgia tennessee florida all kinds of schools and one of the things. He always respected coach. Buying alabama's he signed a ten-year home and own deal in fact In the early eighties shortly before bryant died maybe year or two before they were talking about because bryant really understood the power of the new york television markets There was this. Were discussing having a game giant stadium or maybe doing to him because he felt like he would benefit both programs. So these games are awesome. Yeah one thing that. I kind of lamented in going to nine conference games in the big ten is. I'd rather take that night game and play a home and home with an offer and a home and on without bama albano with usc as opposed to another game against big ten team and unfortunately with the way things move. I think we'll see less and less than other gets so special. Yeah i mean. I not only that i. I remember there was an off shoot. I think it's bridgeport. Maybe my my memory of thirty five years is mistaken. But i mean there was a group of pennsylvania. Fans penn state folks who met alabama folks. They started their own booster club. And and those games jay. I was just a young sportswriter. But my first time up there and then when coach fraternal came to legion field. I mean i it. it was almost indescribable. How cool that was. Yeah and i think part of it is there were. There was a great respect between those fan basis. Because i think there was just no alabama now maybe not to other. Sec teams but alabama fans around us carry themselves a certain way. And maybe we're not that way with big ten other big pook you know. There was a mutual respect there That i think really carried over into the way the game's played host one of the reasons that pay it. So fun You know i. I really miss that. I miss that serious..

"Died conscious and to do that and i always roll my eyes. They're doing it. Might make thing with bagels. Though i grew up in jersey jersey. New york bagels are superior to anywhere else in the country because of the water. No offense california. Mike ridden near the water up there. I'm i live in chicago. And i'm again sorry. Just i know you've got some chicago ties but they're just not good. They're their garbage. I refused he always get me to do it. And they're crap. I would not defend chicago. Bagels you're right. New york bagels are superior by far. It's the water. It's the cleanest water surfer dude. It's not dirty. It's very clean water here new arguments. They're a little arguments so for the montreal bagel. Not not very well known here. Because we're american center bit myopic. If you ask me montreal. Big though a sleeper bagel bagel a one hundred percent little sweeter a little denser a yeah honestly the only bagels. That'll eat and chicago's montreal style. Place so good. Call their surfer dude. You know your stuff montreal. Though again these circle like a fool moon man. Did you guys see that move. The other night. I found my energy either way montreal. Dude what's going on bring for there Yeah lots of brain farts in game one. But what was ridiculous. The game two. They came out and totally outplayed the lightning they had it. Blessed one shot differential or really making life hard for them on a really tough road environment. Especially because they're only gonna get thirty five hundred fans when they go back to canada but late coleman diving goal in the second period. I think it just totally deflated up on. Its point three seconds on the jumbotron. It's ridiculous you have this goal and now they're kind of scratching their heads because they're like okay gain. We didn't come out great. She totally outplayed them. Could beat them. How are we going to beat this team. Who's eighteen million dollars over the salary cap i was going to ask you what is the greatest injustice or unfairness on that front. Emily that you've seen that rivals the entire kucherov in the thing and the idea that this team is well over salary cap. And that's a pretty big thing to have when the salary cap makes you win games in the margins. Yeah i mean the tough thing here. Is that like. We're all rolling your eyes and if you're not a hockey fan and you're listening to this you're like how the heck is this team doing it. The truth is they didn't break one role and the nfl eggshells added investigative situation or looked into it and didn't see anything wrong but they literally went by the nhl rule book. And i think maybe that's the biggest injustice that does exist that all a more serious story and a bit of a plague emily. I don't know that. I've ever understood the way that hockey and youth sports specifically or just plagued by sexual assault stuff and what is going on with the chicago. Blackhawks is totally appalling. I don't know that the story can get enough attention. What's happening there and why it's extremely disturbing allegations on basically ten years ago We remember the blackhawks. Were in the show. Any ten stanley cup and apparently to players on the team Were sexually assaulted. They say by video coach. His name was. Brad aldrich and they told their coaches A coach at assistant coach who then reported it and held a meeting with a bunch of grass including the gm. That's still there stan. Bowman the president john mcdonough. He's no longer there helmet isaac. He's another big guy in the front office and apparently they did nothing and they fired him. But this guy shows up. Brad aldridge to the stanley cup day photos and no one ever sees from him again. And what's worst. Allegedly is that the blackhawks wrote him a letter of recommendation for his next job and later on he does sexually assault. Seventeen year old in michigan. And it's just so crazy to wrap your head around the idea that a team could no willingly know this about this person him for another job and enable him to do this again to Someone else so what happened in wise it in the news now while the player finally got around to filing a lawsuit. I'm you know why ten years later why anything why you know. Why did he feel comfortable. Now there's so many variety of reasons maybe as a good therapist may be finally found peace. Who's to say but the nhl Has kind of divided the blackhawks. Today's day they're launching an internal investigation. We'll see where it goes You know i. I wanna have faith in the process and say they're going to do the right thing and totally investigate this and it'll be completely independent But i'm not sure that we're going to get all the results are answers that we want. Because that's what we've seen in the past with these situations do arise in sports. How does that happen. That kind of leadership breach and don't know You know i went to penn state. And i went there at a very interesting time And you know. I've heard stories before of joe paterno You know the president showing up at his house tried to fire him. And joe paterno basically sending the president home And then you know you get the situation where he's in power because football is greater than everything else and you know. Maybe he's past his time. And maybe it to a situation with the blackhawks or any team in the situation Where winning and these guys titles in the success that they have on the ice You know maybe makes them look the other way on things behind the scene better uglier because it would distract from the bottom line and truthfully in twenty ten if you around the blackhawks you know. This is a team. That was in the darkness whether we're getting a lot of revenue and then all of a sudden boomed with popularity and this might have been a stand on all of that any theories for why it seems. That hockey has more of a problem with this than anywhere else in sports. Maybe outside of gymnastics. You know there's something about hockey culture guys. Don't use the pronoun. I they say we or you you never wanna be larger than the team And so maybe You know there is something where people don't speak up or advocate for themselves You know. I don't want to speculate on this specific situation but that's something that i did notice in hockey culture and maybe people don't come forward on you know maybe at the first sign of something coming bad because again they don't wanna make the story about themselves because it's such inherently a teams or. I mean think about it. The star player in hockey only plays. What a third of the game. A half of a game if it's a defenseman And that would be wild. So that's just kind of hockey culture and maybe that's one of the reasons that this happens in our sport by i would say that's the only reason emily thank you for tolerating are nonsense. I m a bit shocked that you're bagel choices. Were as a plame as they were. I thought i disappointed. I was just. There's only so many bagel. What's your big. You gotta have something you've got to have something. Jeez cheese as related. Yes may mayo and oreos by support for this. Podcast comes from invent together. According to studies less than thirteen percent of all inventors who hold a us patent are women black and hispanic college graduates patent at half the rate of their white counterparts. But we can fix that by increasing participation in innovation and patenting by underrepresented groups. It would quadruple..

"Put finished putting staff together in. The big name is bill. O'brien yes why are you. What does that name seem familiar. Because he was the replacement at penn state for joe. Where Is The Joe Paterno Statue?

"For years now the whereabouts of an iconic joe paterno statue have been unknown and today as part of our. Look back at twenty twenty. We're replaying an episode about the statue that first aired back in june. The athletics audrey snyder spoke with me. About why penn state has gone to such great lengths to conceal the statues location and which she discovered in her own quest to find it from wondering athletic. I'm could beat the davidson and this is the lead so audrey. it's been almost ten years since. Joe paterno at penn state. What is the state of their football program. Today penn state right now is consistently tap. Fifteen program tackles still on his feet. Smoke with a straight on touchdown. This is a team. That's been the new year's six games in three of the past four years. This is a team. That's at a high level of benefit prospects and it's almost easy to forget where this program was just because of how quickly it's it's found itself on the rebound so the reason we're here today. The joe paterno statue which became a huge source of contention in the aftermath of the jerry. Sandusky scandal can you describe in back in those days the providence of the turner statue on campus. It was a really big deal. There was one stop many fans had to make before they went into beaver stadium to watch the game. Whenever we come to penn state. We never failed to stop by and have our picture taken here. Embodies a man. It is the bronze statue of joe. Paterno who's a seven foot nine hundred pound bronze statue. There were thousands upon thousands of graduation photos of kids in caps and gowns underneath. Joe paterno as he has his barons pointer finger extended in the air and it was just such a landmark and walk us through what it was like when the statue came down with authorities are on site this morning at penn state prepping to bring down joe paterno statue. Employees have begun to place fencing around the statue and a tarp state college and university. Police are on the scene right. Your i've learned morning defense up around statue about thirty police. Officers walk out of beaver stadium surround. The statue was done like a surprise by six o'clock in the morning on a sunday people were already wondering what happened to this statue and where it went and for so many fans. The removal of the statue made it look like joe paterno was guilty and so many people who are looking at this story a locally they see a statue coming down and they say well clearly this isn't mission of joe paterno skills and that honestly that's something in the court of public opinion that's continued to play out but turnover reported to people will counteract that and say well. He didn't do enough. He should've done more. He should have followed up with more statue was so symbolic of a whole era owes penn state football. That was being taken down while the litigation was still ongoing so it made it looked like one thing which of course angered a lot of fans. A lot of alumni makes me very angry There are a couple of things going on first of all. We don't know all the facts. Seems like we keep making knee jerk reactions to your say where caving to pressure because now looked like hence status jumping to conclusion based off of the free report former. Fbi director louis. Freeh puts the blame on joe paterno and three other top penn state officials for covering up jerry sandusky child-sex-abuse but you also had a chance that that because of what had happened with jerry sandusky with sensitivity with compassion for his victims. How can you keep a statue up of a head coach. Who at the time had a defensive coordinator who was sexually abusing young boys. I mean it was just so complicated and the thing in all of this was chopra. Paternal never particularly liked the statue. It shows with this bronzed finger looking like he's giving the number one pose which was like so anti turnover in that it made. It looked like he was boasting but so many people were clinging to the statute because it was their connection to joe paterno in that penn state era of football that they knew in loved. But you then wonder like. Should we ever put statues of anyone. Can you celebrate a person in only honor part of them or does a statue represents kind of this all encompassing being. And that's what makes it so risky when he decided to put a statue like this up because even when this thing came out in two thousand and one show paternal is legacy everything. It looked bulletproof so
