We'll talk to paul about what led to that stunning arrest last week. So paula after your team conducts all these interviews with family and friends and the police were investigating this case. You're eventually able to acquire this two hundred page police report and other records about brian's homicide but because the miami dade police still consider this an active investigation. A lot of that report is redacted in that report though there was information about a relative of jada brody. What did it say so the police report and some of the other records that place released to us showed that they really dug deep into jada brody and some are relatives. The one that they seem to have gathered the most records on was her twin brother. Jerome jerome at the time of brian's killing already had a pretty lengthy criminal record that included incidents involving guns and violence. He actually came to the attention of miami dade police because of a police officer in boston and jada and jerome or are from the boston area originally and this officer saw the story about bryan pata on the news is bryan. Pata a defensive lineman for the miami hurricanes. The shooting happened right down. Southwest seventy seven th avenue here in the parking lot of and somehow made the connection between jada brodie who obviously mentioned in the coverage and drawl jerome had been picked up just a few days earlier on some charges of illegal firearms possession. Weeks later officers from miami actually travel up to boston to interview jerome. And he refuses to talk to them. He tells them they're wasting their time and that they're harassing his family and they never get an interview from him. People were asking Media at the time were asking could he be involved in this and jada says absolutely not. There's no way that this could happen. A family attorney says that there were several people who said he wasn't in florida at the time. But we don't have a definitive answer as to wear jerome was on the night of brian. Patas killing so again because this is an active investigation. The police have only provided fragments of their records to you. So you have stories. Like jerome brody's and the incident at the club and the stolen rims but no overwhelming evidence from what i can glean in files that you did have. What other.

"For Bloomberg opinion. We could do that today with Bryan Pata. Debt market columnist for Bloomberg Opinion, Brian Thanks so much for joining us here you're recent column. I think it's really interesting entitled Americans never shun credit cards like this. I kind of thought that we Went into this pandemic lot of job losses here. People might tapped into their credit lines here. The other credit cards even though it comes at a very high interest rate. What's the data actually show? What are people doing? Yeah, well, I mean, it basically showed the biggest decrease in credit card balances on record in this New York bed. Equifax data, which kind of suggests a couple things. First of all, it suggests that The federal stimulus did its job. It got money into the hands of people, and they were able to use those 1200 paychecks in the unemployment insurance in order to make their payments rather than rack up credit card debt. It also suggests that maybe people just simply stayed home and didn't make big ticket purchases when it comes to travel and leisure. I know for me personally, That's one of the largest expenses, airfare, lodging if I could go on going anywhere. If I wanted just staying home, then all of a sudden, those aren't on the credit card bills anymore. So the only thing that's not on there is delinquencies right by and so we know that people didn't rack up dead. But we don't know how much that they were in that they are defaulting on their That's right. I mean, I think that's that's where the federal package that was passed a few months ago really came into play on. Banks have also been kind of lenient as well. They haven't really necessarily said you have to pay on on your debt now. And so that's why student loans, mortgages, even autos to a certain extent. Nobody's really becoming seriously delinquent on those payments because they venture into four parents agreements, But the question is going to be it down The line here. Job support today aren't more people getting employed. Are there going to be able to ultimately pay back that debt what they owe? Once where once for a little bit out of the thick of the pandemic. So savings rates I understand have gone up pretty substantially here. What's the data show? Yeah, The savings rate is much higher on DH. That's probably supported markets to a large extent whether that's money market funds we saw huge inflows initially during the march Market madness. There was a lot of flow into Ah, cash like instruments, then obviously, stocks here are now not too far off from the record high. So so there's money in the system to save but ultimately It's really gonna come down, Teo. Those who don't make quite so much below average incomes, how they're faring. And if they're still unemployed if they're in the service industry what Congress does here with with the next round of disco release Right, Because if you're using that money to buy food because you're stockpiles gone, then that savings rate is going to go down pretty sharply known. Yeah, exactly. Whereas the propensity of span is not quite so high with higher income earners, So that's where you see the savings rate. And that's where you see people piling into investment grade corporate bonds, buying pretty much everything as well as the stock market. Can I just jump in? Because I think it's gonna be really interesting behavior, really, to see this period and to study it afterwards, because right now, I mean, I don't know about you pulled, but I'm certainly getting You know ads on DH incentives and X percent off on their just so many e mails coming in every day that it takes, you know, will of steel just not put yourself into credit card debt. So obviously the idea that Americans are very prone to spending and that they don't save and so on. That could all get upended post covers, right, Brian? Yeah. I mean, I think there's certainly to some extent there's there's pent up demand. Um, you sort of talked about. Maybe it was retail or somewhat retails really struggling. Obviously, these are really struggling. So it'll be interesting to see whether if there's a vaccine, whatever that might happen if airlines, for example, our hotel's rebound sharply and people Actually go out and travel or if this is going to be a mom or more of a slog and has really changed people's behavior around around what they're what they're spending on. So Brian gets, um, obviously, the employment data today a little bit better and expected, but again, still showing some grudgingly. Hi. Ah, unemployment here one of the credit markets. What's that? You know you fall the debt markets across the board where they kind of telling you today. Yeah, well, I just probably comet says that the report satisfied both everyone and no. One time because effectively did beat expectations. But the but at the same time, it's the smallest pick up. Um So far, there's obviously big drop in April and then a huge pick up in May and June and then July kind of slowing down, So we're seeing better than expected, but also Slowing job gains so Digging into the details. It seems like everybody is waiting to see what Congress will dio and whether this report will spur them to act. It doesn't seem like it will because there are all of these details that are kind of murky after what happened. You have people, more people going back to work, so you don't need the unemployment insurance. But on the other hand, there's still unemployment rate in the double digits of maybe you do so it's kind of hard and hasn't really pointed in one direction or the other. About which way we're going to go from here..

"Some big developments Kelly in the death of Jeffrey Epstein to jail guards responsible for monitoring in the ninety according to the corner killed himself they've not been criminally charged in this case yeah they are accused of falsifying the records because they weren't supervising him the day before he had been moved off of suicide watch when you're on suicide watch a twenty four hour surveillance both in terms of video and a guard right there when they moved him back into the general population they were supposed to check on them every thirty minutes the two guards you were right fifteen feet away were either sleeping or online shopping and then they falsify the record to say that they had checked on him when in fact they had yeah and that's that's that's awful so their charge now I'm I'm I guess I'm hoping I'm not a conspiracy theorist but I still have questions about this case I'm hoping that these actually these these this case goes to trial and we can maybe shed more light on exactly what didn't didn't happen there because people are saying you know how could this happen to such a prominent inmate who was on suicide watch also we know that people allow inmates don't like peta files it after he was accused of being such and also he had a lot of powerful friends who we could may be implicated in Syria Iran so you have all that intrigue all right plus you have his family hiring doctor Michael Baden to do the autopsy and their and their own investigation and he determined that the marks on the neck were not consistent with hanging it was consistent with strangulation there were no cameras ally on his cell at all so there are a lot of questions that I'm not a conspiracy there is either I tend to make fun of those people who are you know I I I do think that in this particular case I could see a scenario playing out where you know what there is a somebody is a has this to the pata file who is you know allows another inmate to come in looks the other way and pretend that they don't know what's going on and there's no camera and there's no record of anybody so I mean or somebody from the outside comes in and says Hey we'll give you I will facilitate a transfer to a nicer facility or will reduce your sentence if you know you you go in there and do what you need to do and and will look the other way yeah I look at it if if I had a gun to my head right now I still think it was a suicide he finally got a chance to do what he did it his future is bleak but but I don't know I'd like I'd like more information of interesting interesting yeah hearing yesterday in Washington where the what one of the committee's handling it is looking into and they they they talk to the the head of the prisons there care of Kathleen hawks Sawyer she appeared before the Senate Judiciary Committee and she was not asked about hello all things in the federal prison system including the F. sting case in in this exchange with the committee chair Lindsey Graham senator from South Carolina they they were talking about this conspiracy theory and she confirmed that there is the FBI is looking into a quote unquote criminal enterprise possibility with the case this high profile there's got to be their major malfunction the system are criminal enterprise it for that to allow this to happen so are you looking at both the FBI looking at both if the FBI is involved and they are looking criminal enterprise yes so I mean that is sort of obvious but it's interesting the FBI does have a formal investigation those are the two possibilities either there was incompetence or something

Some of those enslaved Africans did remain on the island and worked on plantations. There was a large number for of enslaved people on the island but there were also many menu missions and many free people of Color and black people also lived in cure so and some of them even even owned enslaved people. They're worse labor volts incur- so in the eighteenth century including minor ones in seventeen sixteen seventeen fifty and seventeen seventy four one of the most significant revolts incur- so's history is the one that began on August seventeenth seventeen ninety five about fifty enslaved. People who worked on the plantation refused to work and went to nearby plantations together more supporters. There were several reasons that the unrest among enslaved people have reached this point Dutch planters were imposing more restrictions on enslaved people to increase productivity and profit they forced enslaved people to work on Sundays and they hired enslaved people out to others slave owners also collectively punished enslaved enslaved people for the offense of a single person on top of the conflict swelling around those changes in slave people and curious though also received word of the anti slavery and anti colonial uprisings in the French colony Asano monk or present day Haiti as well as the defeat of the Dutch by French revolutionary forces in seventeen ninety five as revolts and conspiracies took place in the French and Spanish Caribbean the spirit of revolution spread throughout the region and enslaved man named to reportedly knew about the French and Haitian revolutions and spoke about them to Louis Mercier Bastian and car Pata and pays relic. How were all instrumental in the revolt is not clear whether the revolt was the result of a planned conspiracy or happened spontaneously painlessly but the strike on the net plantation turned into a widespread revolt at its height the revolt involved about two thousand enslaved people out of the twelve thousand who lived on the island some free black people and maroons or fugitives who live in independent communities also joined the revolt against the colonists at first colonial authorities turned to a Roman Catholic priest named Father Shink to help with negotiations but revolt leaders did not budge on their calls for freedom negotiations failed the Dutch decided to use armed force and turned to white colored and black militias to suppress the rebellion. The insurgents claimed that support would be arriving from Saddam but by late September the revolt had been suppressed pressed the leaders of the rebellion including Tula mercy and carpet had been captured to white people have been killed while around one hundred under enslaved people were murdered. Tula was tortured on the rack and forced to confess that he planned to kill all white people incur- so and then he was executed suited other revolt leaders were also put to brutal death after the revolt colonial authorities made efforts to roll back some of the harsh labor practices. This is imposed on enslaved people that led to the rebellion though there was a little anti slavery resistance incur- so in the years after the seventeen ninety five revolt there weren't many major slave revolts on the island throughout the nineteenth century. Slavery was abolished and cure so in eighteen sixty three. I'm

"The creature this week is the PATA SOLA and La Tuna from Latin America. I'll start with PAT ASALA which literally means one foot though both creatures are women with just one foot. The Pata Russell has one Harry Goat lick which ends in a bovine lightfoot in her natural state. She has one breast bulging eyes. catlike fangs hooked nose mant according to one thing that I'm not entirely sure isn't a typo cookie like hair Shalala. You see that side of her if you're about to be eaten by her because surprise an affair is looking creature. Roaming the wilderness also really wants to eat you shocking the pestle almost exclusively targets lonely men an and then only when the thinking about women team an easy mark an easier meal. Peta Solo will appear in the form of beautiful woman or doc or cow which okay and she'll lure them away from their group sufficiently far enough away for X. Sangu nation the facts come out and the men are never heard heard from again so don't follow dangerous looking creatures into the dark forest. You know this. I've said it a hundred times or do follow them. In the legends of Colombia and Ecuador. There's a bean known as the tuna who is kind of like the Pata Sola but also very different. She has one leg and can shape shape shift but she's not quite as good as the Pata Sala so her fake leg will always be some form of a wooden wisc fear Guy Schoeller you away away neat you basically if you're lonely. Woodcutter and things seem to be too good to be true. They probably are but if you're a child you're in luck yeah shoulder you away from your family and you'll disappear forever but the upshot all you can eat shrimp. She'll transform into an imperfect likeness of the child's mother and then lured them off into the forest where keep them docile. She'll just keep giving them shrimp. The State even has its own word. The tuna does it so it's entombed demento which I guess yes is the state of being in a food coma after an all you can eat buffet..
Was The Lorax Really A Monkey?
"Short Orange and moustachioed he famously speaks for the trees. He's the law wrecks on of Dr Seuss's most beloved characters known for his environmental. Activism he might also have been based on a real life creature. That's the premise of one study which proposes that this sort of a man described as shortish and oldish and Brownish and Mossy could've urban inspired by the Patas monkey in one thousand nine hundred seventy Dr Seuss real name Theodor Geisel took a trip to Kenya there he likely observed some primates who are orange stand donor hind legs and yes have a mustache. Mustache these potus monkeys even have arrested call that might remind you of the Laura Axes Sawdust e sneeze the studies researchers took this comparison one step further using facial recognition software to compare the florax to possible real life inspirations though results the lurex looks an awful lot like a blue monkey or Pout US monkey was also interesting is that potus monkeys get their food from whistling thorn cases. which resemble some old trophy trees in the books illustrations in the story the trump bula trees need the law rex to protect them but maybe like the PAS monkeys living off the cases? The Laura eggs needs tributaries to so this could mean that the Laura had a symbiotic relationship with the trump bula trees the study says if so the LUREX is less and environmental activists and more a creature of a threatened habitat.
The 'Great Dying' Nearly Erased Life On Earth. Scientists See Similarities To Today
"There was a time when life on earth was almost wiped out. The great dying was the biggest extinction ever, it happened two hundred and fifty million years ago and was largely caused by greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. As NPR's Christopher Joyce reports scientists are beginning to see alarming similarities between the great dying and what's happening to our atmosphere. Now you can learn about the great dying at the new deep time exhibit at the Smithsonian's national museum of natural history. I get a back door visit by a giant freight elevator. That's used to haul life size dinosaurs up to the new hall. Workers are assembling dioramas and video monitors. It's a few weeks before opening curator, Scott wing shows me, the exhibits, crown jewel, the museums. First real tyrannosaurus Rex what an enormous head. It's a pretty big body to the Toronto. Sora stands over a prone triceratops. It's jaws clamped on its head. But I guess while the, the truth is, it's really isn't a dinosaur hall. Yes. There are plenty of dinosaurs in it. We like to say come for the dinosaurs. Stay for everything else, the theme is factually, the interconnectedness of life through geologic time exhibits show, for example, how plants at the bottom of the food chain supported everything from insects to twenty ton of Pata services wing likes that he's a botanist. I'm a photo synthesis chauvinist. The whole ecosystem is based on photosynthesis, and because life from toadstools to tyrannosaurs is connected. When something big happens to the earth, the whole fabric can disintegrate and that happened due to global warming. It's explained in the exhibit, great dying section. This is it. This is the big one. The exhibit explains that an enormous volcanic field erupted in what is now Siberia, it spewed carbon dioxide in pollution into the atmosphere possibly for millions of years that warmer to the planet made the oceans, acidic and robbed them of oxygen. There have been other mass extinctions like the one that wiped out the dinosaurs. But this one at the end of the Permian period was about what happens when too much carbon dioxide rises into the atmosphere. Those are lessons that we can learn from studying the past, and they're also those processes that are being observed by scientists today. Earth. Scientists is like Curtis Deutsche of the university of Washington, whose research helped inform, the Smithsonian curator's the very same things that caused the great dying are happening right now in our ocean today as a result of human activities, not to the same degree but in the same direction, so Deutsche thought, why not recreate the hothouse of the great dying in a computer and see how present day life would fare, he could crank up the heat and lower the oxygen and watch as parts of the ocean started to become deadly. The first thing that happens is that you start to see a local loss of species as they begin to move in response to the climate heating up. But some parts of the planet were more forgiving. And we discovered something that was kind of surprising and new, I think, and that is that extinction was very strong everywhere, but it was even stronger near the cold parts of earth in the near the polar oceans. Than it was in the warmer, tropical oceans. It makes sense. He says animals that live near the equator can migrate toward the pulse to find cooler water. But those that are already live in cold oxygen rich waters near the polls have very little room to run. Deutsche says the experiment is a window on the future, even the present marine species are ready migrating, we see responses of marine species to those changes today that look like what we think happened at the end of the Permian, and that says the Smithsonian Scott wing is what visitors should take away from the new exhibit, or so powerful. We are basically a geological for us now, as well as a human force a force that changing the conditions for life on the

"Signs. Let's get into this with Bryan Pata. He is debt markets columnist at Bloomberg opinion. He is in our Bloomberg interactive brokers studio here in New York. Nice to have you here round Mesa. Tell me tell me what you're what you're seeing. Well, I mean, it's a complete u-turn. It's almost a straight V. Actually, if you look at the sort of total return index for John bonds, December was an awful month. It was the worst since December two thousand fifteen and no issuance came. They still lost two and a half percent. And all of a sudden comes roaring back. Five percent returns already so far this year. And we just saw the biggest inflow into high yield funds since July two thousand sixteen. So there's been a complete about face in a really short period of time. And it seems like the easy money is probably gone now. All right. So let's take a step back and remind people how this sort of fits into. The investing world because you covered this as a reporter. We were talking about this before you came here. Now, you have the luxury of being an opinion out. There reminded us how this all fit how it all fits in. Well, I mean junk bonds are really really sensitive to recession risk the big risk in high yield is that there will be defaults. You get paid a high interest rate. And as a result, you absorb the risk of the fact that the companies will go under. So the big question right now is are we headed towards a recession or are we headed towards a period of two percent growth? Two percent growth is probably good enough for a good number of high yield companies to stay alive and pay bondholders interests, which is all they care about. But it's an open question, and there's a New York fed model that suggests the twenty five percent chance of recession twelve months from now, which is the highest probability that's been since two thousand eight it's so funny because I actually mentioned that this morning on air on TV, and somebody was kind of questioning that can we really follow that. That model anymore considering kind of all the quantitative easing that we've seen out of the fed that it's kind of a different world does the model still work. I mean, that's going to be a question when it happens. Right. I mean, I think one of the big questions going forward. The fed is on pause, and the fed has been able to raise interest rates a bit at least better than its central Bank counterparts. But the question is how much ammunition is there? Should there? Be an economic slowdown due central bankers have to to counteract this. And if you believe that quantitative easing is the answer, and that that will Bowie markets and salvage the economy than they're definitely does seem to be some firepower from the fed. Would it be from Vince earlier, Vincent Morello? Right. The possibility of actually what an interest rate cut in June June. And you do wonder I mean, you do wonder if some of the stuff can turn so quick. I really I mean, I think that they would. I mean as far as the fat goes by interpretation of Jade Powell's thinking is that he will definitely just say, okay, fine. Balance sheet, we're done calm down. Stop the run offering to leave it where it is. Now, I think he would do that before they would even consider a rate cut unless there was something really dramatic that happened. We're just gonna chill here for a while. I mean, what are the other interesting things to me about the high yield market? The junk bond market is really the role it plays in takeovers, one of the companies you site clear channel that's one of these legacy. I believe me on this your legacy elbows from back in the day. That's it also offers us a window into kind of who's buying and selling especially in the private equity. Well, yeah, it's definitely a sense of sort of economic activity and potential, you know, exuberance in the markets for a and sort of buying what have you leverage loans for a huge deal last year, for example. And it's since slowed at least a little bit now. So we'll see you definitely right that that high yield junk bonds leverage lounge. Those are definitely signs of whether credit is really flowing throughout the system, which is a sign of a healthy economy or whether the spigots turned off. Well, and you do wonder like if all of a sudden, you know, things turn out to be much worse than everybody anticipated. These guys are plowing money into high yield could really be caught in a tough spot. Yeah. I think that's one of the big reasons why the Fed's balance sheet for whatever reason is catching the Mark detention because it feels like that is a liquidity drain, and it is a liquidity train. I think it's maybe overstated a little bit by market participants. But the balance sheet reduction gets people concerned that there's not enough liquidity in a system, which will then exacerbate any sort of problem in high yield or any of these sort of low liquidity markets. So while we have you here. And I'm really glad you're here in part because love your column about Bill Gross earlier this week that was probably one of the biggest moments with of the biggest news moments. We've seen in the bond market. Maybe the broader investment market. What is your take on that? It's the most read story of the week or the week. Yeah. Yeah. It was it was an interesting moment. Just because it was sort of the end of an era, and he sort of contemplate the role of active management going forward. Bill Gross was famous for having a total return fund now, total return funds every single asset manager has a total return fund their sort of ubiquitous teams a trailblazer. Fair, and you know, his his last act was an unconstrained fund and tonkin's interview with him. I felt like really pointed out the fact that he sort of said, maybe maybe unconstrained wasn't the right move for me. Maybe maybe maybe it doesn't work. Maybe it's not so easy to get hedge fund returns as a as a manager who I mean, he obviously knows the bond market incredibly. Well, he was in it for a long time. But he made these bats and was trying to capture five ten percent returns in a market that wasn't going to give it to pretty much any bottom manager. So it really raised a lot of a lot of interesting questions. And I think a lot of folks. You know, he he was a controversial figure in some ways. But I think people are really respectful of him. You know, even if they had their differences, and it is interesting to think about this whole active Pasadena debate, you you think about the retirement Bill Gross about the passing of Jack Bogle all sort of seminal moments that we've had of the some of the biggest names, I actually wrote a column about vanguard, actually, surprisingly, they actually have a pretty large active management is and yeah, especially especially in the bond space. What's interesting? We were talking about ETF on the air this morning the equity space, but these ETF state, you assume are following indices, which so many do right and index of sore, and now you're seeing much more actively managed ATS, which I find kind of facet and Andy's factory that you sort of quantitative methods. I think are really becoming more of a thing as well. Invesco just launched some for example. So really interesting times as far as if you are an investment manager, what kind of fees you can expect to reap. Going forward. People are investors.
