"You listen and you feel, and you just got to keep going, you know? It wasn't hard. It wasn't drudgery. It just was tough. No referee, Hogan, like a drunk man. But referee Kyoto still selling his car crash. The night out before. Yeah, yeah. Real quick, let's get back to Amy, I think she's working again. Amy are you there? You're good to go now? We will see. I didn't know what happened last time. All good. It just froze on you, but you're good now. All right, well, gentlemen, I wanted to ask you all where this match ranks for you all. So my for you revving at WrestleMania is where does this match write for you? And mister Ross, where does this match rank for you in calling a match at WrestleMania? And I hope your health is well, mister Ross. It's good. I'm full of P and V, honey. All right. Be careful around on JR these days. This is obviously a WrestleMania highlight for me because again, the crowd delivered. The crowd became the star of this president. This presentation partnering. But that's what I remember, this is the overwhelming support, and you know, I thought, hey, Mark did the federalists out? Yeah, Patterson laid a lot of this out. Yes, he sure did, you know? He was rock's guy. Yes. Plus, when you're working a territory for 15 years like fat did in San Francisco and you're in the sum of the same markets every single week, you got to learn to tell stories and continue stories and add another chapter. So pat was always rocks guy and very well for a rock because he'd learned a great deal from patters. Yeah, definitely sure that pat Patterson, Michael Hayes had a lot of input here and in and out. Yeah. So I think in my top 5 WrestleMania moments, I have a hard time overshadowing what Brett and stone cold did at WrestleMania 13. We can't shamrock. Right. That was pretty awesome. The double turns are very rare and they're very hard to pull off. And so I'll always kind of put that match may be my favorite. I did like a call and when I got to come back and do a little work with taker and Sean, I think that was at WrestleMania 25. I thought that was a hell of a performance, but both guys I like and respect and known forever. Let's go to the audio here, Josh real quick. He's fired up coming back. The crowd's going

"You want somebody to bolt, become bigger than they were before they arrive. So I didn't dislike that situation. But it's just, again, it's a pile on thing, and I don't know. I think I didn't have a problem with the three minute warning, the gimmick, but I don't think Patterson was, I don't think pat was hurt badly. Right, no. Bruce death a little bit or jar a little bit or whatever you want to say. And I'm not just throwing it off, like anything. I love pat. I miss you to this very day. He would be if pat Patterson were alive today, I can only imagine his sentiments on today's product of the business that he helped build quite frankly. No doubt. So listen, Kane and RVD are going to team up to take on flair and Triple H, they go 12 minutes and 21 seconds. And of course, you're still trying to get this angle over. And Meltzer would even say this. Jim Ross was apparently being paid a bonus every time he used the words semen and necrophilia, and of course he's saying that tongue in cheek, but this is the era where you've got the old man in your ear, the entire night. And he oftentimes focuses on that main event and wants you to hammer that main event or at least we've heard as fans. Are these things that he's saying to you now, Jim? You got to make sure you get over it. Semen and necrophilia. Yeah, what do they say? I want you to work semen into your presentation or I kept thinking about this that how many households are forced into a situation where daddy or mom has got to explain to a kid what a lesbian is, hot lesbian action. What does that mean? Necrophilia, okay? What's that? You know, what are you going to do to ten year old or 12 year old kid, it's having sex with a dead person? Then that not all goes to another road. And it's not healthy. It's not good. It's uncomfortable. You wonder how many kids stop watching raw or forced to stop watching raw with grandpa grandma? Now they got it to be the one to explain this insanity. It was just, it was crazy, county. Really crazy. You can keep trying to find some redeeming

"Sort of flip flops after doing really well. I mean, his first pay per view title to fences against Dell Wilkes, the patriot. And I know he's the new guy and wrestling fans like new, but it's not even in the main event. He second from the top underneath Sean and the undertaker, which is kind of crazy because when you think about the SummerSlam main event, undertakers, the champ, Shawn's the referee, Brett beats the champ, becomes the new champ and then he moves down the card and it's the guy who lost the belt and the referee in the main event. Yeah. I can see how Brett would be frustrated with that. Legitimately, couldn't you? Yeah. Yeah, of course. Absolutely. Absolutely. And I'm a big believer that you close the show. If you have a title match, it's your primary title, your big title, like in this situation that WW title, for those guys, you know, it's got to go and last. And I think that issue was more, oh, hell, I don't know, Connie. It was just more, maybe the fact that Vincent had the confidence in Bill Wilkes, the Patriots that read it. And somebody taught me how to not closing with a championship match. And that was offensive to Brett. And I can understand that wholeheartedly. You got to protect your championship no matter what. We fought like hell to protect it on the Montreal screwjob. Yeah, we did. So, you know, what are we changed horses here? Same deal. So there's so many lack of common sense decisions were made. And it didn't sound like The Office of which I was a part of didn't do enough to resurrect this situation. And so then I guess continued to like an open wound on my leg. Hey, by the way, I'm doing today, I'm doing my first hyperbaric treatment on my skin cancer wound on this shit and hopefully it's going to help heal steed up the healing. Good. I'm very excited about getting started and seeing how it's going to work out. So that's a new deal for my cancer treatment. And like I said before and it's been great to get the feedback for the fans. I get a lot of tweets rather on that. Which I really, really appreciate. It's one of your by yourself more often than not as I am. And it's not a poor me deal. I don't need a GoFundMe. I'm okay. But it's just a matter of, you know, getting ahead of the curve a little bit, trying to do things. Because I don't like the news that this thing's going to be at least a year in healing. It's painful to travel. It's painful to not have my third elevated, and sometimes you're on a plane. What you need is this room. So I've been flying in the bulkhead at first class. Because I got more room to stretch out a little bit and get the circulation going back to my leg. And the other thing, Conrad, that would become a big proponent of. Compression socks. Yeah, you've told me about those. Big fan and I was totally against it. I don't want that. You know, John Wayne here. I'll just put a stick in my mouth and buy it. I'll be okay to just pull this air out, Doc. It's just a whole, I'm very hopeful that it's going to help me. So, and if not, it's just going to continue to heal on its own and take a little bit more time, so I see it. So I'm excited about how that might work out for me. And I'll keep you posted. Well, we're pulling for you, Jim, and I'm excited that you're trying something new. Trying a new hold as you once said. Yeah. I love the point you made a moment ago about, boy, we sure did fight like hell to protect the title at Survivor Series in Montreal, but here its second to last, but you might have been on something. When he said, maybe Vincent have a lot of faith and confidence in del Wilkes, because not only does Brett get the win here in September at the in your house show, but after the match, Brett gives the patriot a pile driver, breaks his American flag, chokes him with it, winds up decking pat Patterson as well, Meltzer would say it's hard to figure out after having patriot do a submission job. While he was buried so badly in the post match as well, it almost feels like he's sort of written off as a character, but the next line on raw had set up that it'll be Brent and Davy against patriot invader in a flag match at the next pay per view. So I don't know necessarily that Vince didn't see value in Dale Wilkes, but he certainly didn't think that this was a main event angle or not as important or special as what they're going to close with even in October. Once again, undertaker and Sean. So three months in a row undertaker and Sean are hanging out in the main event and the world title is not going on last. All right. Yeah, it's a head scratcher. Politics. Sean was lobbying John had Vince's ear. And he took

"Ringside at WrestleMania 15 in Philadelphia. He does continue to do commentary for the international broadcasts for the next two years. And he's traveling to Stanford once a week for that. Is gorillas health really catching up with him here? Yeah, absolutely. It kept deteriorating. He lost a bunch of weight, he had good doctors care bob Morello, AKA grilled monsoon, was a very smart guy. So he's not going to be like a lot of the boys and just let it go. I'll work through it. I don't want to show any weakness because promoters don't want to see a weakness in a talent. At least that was the old school way. Look at it. And now you hope AW does. We put our talents first and we have doctors on site. At every physical endeavor, so it was an interesting time to say the least. But the whole story really revolved around Austin and his long-term health. Well, let's talk about something slaughter is going to do here on cam. He's going to announce that the patriot Dale Wilkes is going to be getting a title shot at the new champion Bret Hart at the upcoming ground zero pay per view. You want to talk about timing. I don't think there's ever been better timing for a new character to be introduced than perhaps at the height of this USA versus Canada feud that really just electrified an arena the month prior at Canadian stampede, and now we've had some real stakes the night before, where Fred Hart were to lose, he would never wrestle in America again. Of course now instead, he wins and haze the world champ. So we need an American hero to combat this damn Canadian heel. And who better than the patriot? Is this just right time right place for Dale Wilkes? Do you think he could have had success in the company without this angle? Chat me up. Well, I think that it was largely Brits idea to work a deal with. Brett saw something and they'll wilks that Brett wanted intrigued him. And he thought that their in ring styles and all that stuff, the presentation was very compatible. So I think Brett had a whole lot to do with that booking, quite frankly. And it was the right thing. You know, you go out there, it's like people say it all the time. You go over, you get over it. Well, you know, Brett was hell bent on making sure that Bill Wilkes got over. There's plenty of false finishes, there's a drama, solid fundamentally sound because that was a great idea to do the mash as I mentioned, and it was prince idea to lay out the match. I'm sure pat Patterson had some help in it. Which is always a blessing. So pat was a major proponent of Britt, so two fellow Canadians. So they got along great and always tapped into fast knowledge. So it was an interesting booking. But I think Bret Hart had more to do with that booking than they all Wilkes even, quite frankly. They'll look good, you know, he had those issues, substance abuse, which we were not aware of at that point in time. He looked great. Yes. He's a fun guy to talk to. And he's, you know, his football players are no gamecock. Everybody, you know, a lot of people like little cock. Say that as a South Carolina football, obviously. Sure. So anyway, that's fair, right? So anyhow, yeah, it was Bret Steele. That was best booking and it worked. They had a really good match. Everybody likes a little cock is available now as a T-shirt over ad free cares dot com. Of course, all of our proceeds and funds from those t-shirts sales go directly to saint Jude, so let's celebrate JR's great line there and raise some money for a good goals with saint jeans. Austin's immediately back on TV. He doesn't miss a single night. He's doing promos here. He's not taking any time off. Listen, in a modern era, it feels like he definitely would have been off the show and it's time to go get evaluated and that's prioritize your health. But this is a different era. Here it's time to rub some dirt on it and you don't want to lose your spot and walk it off and all that sort of thing. But he has, as you said at the top of the show, worked his ass off and as a friend of ours would say, he didn't come this far to just go this far, right? That's right. Oh, no doubt about that. He was hell bent on doing whatever it took to stay. He was present on television alive. And quite frankly, as fun as it was to call Austin's matches, and I called a ton of them, obviously. During that period of time, when he was the hottest, it was, I don't know, it's crazy scenario, but we didn't use our best judgment there, but Steve insisted that he'd be on television. Right. It wasn't like, let's talk about it. No, they don't talking about it. I'll be there, Monday. And we'll do whatever we got to do. Because the fans, as I started to say, MS they loved watching Austin wrestle. They just wanted to see him. Yes. They wanted to hear him. Yes. And his swagger and his bravado and all that stuff. People live vicariously through that. So getting Steve

"Great. Ten minutes. See on Sunday. And that shows you when you have great chemistry and understand the psychology of wrestling, you don't have to sit there right here like, oh, it took him 6 hours of pretty good match. I'm like, what the fuck? 6 hours? Are you kidding me? Oh, they got in a fight, putting the other match. Who's fighting over a match? He just make it up. You do whatever you want. So that was so quickly put together. And then of course, execution is the next thing, which we had perfectly and I'll say one more thing about it was I thought that the finish should be me going over. Just the position that I was in, I had big matches of triple H and laws. They had big matches with Austin lost and I just thought it really fit better if I won. I would always go to pat Patterson who was a pro wrestling Jedi. He was so smart with psychology. Yeah, just a great, he was like Yoda and I was like Luke Skywalker in his little knapsack running through dagobah. And I was just trying to have him explain why it made sense. He goes, it doesn't matter who wins and loses. Because you do need to do something at the end. And that's when Vince said, watch his cooker. And the nuts. And I was like, it's great. So that's why we did the thing where we hug at the end. And it's almost like a two Brutus and I kick him in the balls and he did this. He's Sean is such a great baby face. Like most guys would just go down and sell, but he kind of did this thing where he kind of melted down my body. Just look on his face. And just collapsed. And it was just the ultimate finish for this amazing classic match that still, in my opinion, is one of the greatest WrestleMania matches of all time. Recently, wi had the money in the bank pay per view. And the money in the bank match came around a you came up with the idea. So 2004 you did the match with Christian at

"The push up bin from skip and it's over. And here comes sunny. And that's it, JR, he would go ahead and lose that match. Talk about his influence in the early parts of his career. Who were some of those influential guys. Patterson. Patterson. Any more experienced main event level talents or tell us that I had worked on many events, always were willing to talk to Iraq because he's so respectful. And willing to listen. He was young guys who didn't mind listening. He realized he didn't know everything. But he wanted you to teach everything that you knew. So you take that with it down the road. So I spent Patterson was, you know, it was probably the most influential guy there in rock career. As far as a little subtle things in ring things, nuances and things of that nature. And I'm sure there are a lot of other guys, but she just looked at one person. It was always consistent in rocks, formative years, pat Patterson would be that guy. Let's talk a little bit about Jerry Lawler and his influence. He did spend some time in Memphis. So can you kind of share any thoughts on Jerry and the time spent down there in Memphis for The Rock? Well, the Memphis territory was a good idea, it didn't function as well as OVW. And arguably, maybe even less Thatcher's operation there Cincinnati. But we had Lawler there. And we wanted to keep tabs and take a good look at and keep his hands on rock. And that's kind of how we worked that deal. Here's the thing. We knew The Rock was not going to be there long. A few weeks. I'm thinking, before we started moving around and getting even with other people that had to experience. So, you know, he was just a big, bright eyed kid that just wanted to learn. Joe, were you getting tapes on him or was just word of mouth from Jerry? Oh, we got to hate. Okay. Yeah, we good. We got some taste. We could always see how he's doing. And I always had somebody down there when they had shows trying to have somebody there that could keep a close eye on him and help him when he needed it. Well, with rocky working in Memphis, he's brought to TV occasionally back then, even to getting to Russell Owen Hart. And then on August 24th, there was a fun angle. We have the clip, but with time running out on the live TV show flex cavana, that's what he was called challenge Lawler for the title and said he leave town if he lost. With 15 seconds left in the show, Lawler hit flux with a chain and as they went off the air, they announced flex was gone. You had to know at this point he was ready for the main roster. And I'm assuming it's, you know, going off of Jerry the king Lawler's opinion in others and said, hey, it's time to get him up here at this point. Yeah, I got like that Paul. He never looked good on your site. Like rock, you just continue to help continue to getting the support that he needs and really let him run free. He's like, a wild stallion. You know, you don't put a bit in their mouth and pull their head back. Let them run. And that's kind of what we do with rock. We'd let him run when we could. There you go. Well, hey, JR, let's check out this angle. I'm telling you, if you're not an ad free show member, this is a good episode to join up because we have some rare clips that many of you may have never seen before of early days of rock, and we're going to take a look at this one. That whole angle in Memphis with Lawler. The match just about to happen. You know, that's right, Dave. When they told me earlier this week that I was going to wrestle Jerry the king Lawler. I did a little thinking, Dave. I thought to myself, well, you know what?.

"That was, I guess that was the biggest storyline. I mean, Goldberg was still, you know, I think there was still trying to rehab Bill from his loss, the December prior. You know, there was all the, you know, all the guys that I thought were the, you know, the future of the company, you know, had you been there, Chris, you would have been one, but you know, dean and Addy and Chris and Perry and ray and Conan, who were the 6 guys that I eventually would end up doing stuff with. You know, they would come up with their ideas and bring them to me and say, can you take these to the guys and see if this would help? And with those guys, you know, they had really fun storylines just conflict within the 6 of them. And it seemed like at the time everybody was happy like, yeah, give them 20, 30 minutes to do this stuff every three hours, and to me it felt like they were treading water, but at least I was working with them and trying to get the stuff to Nash and Sullivan and sort of lobby for them. So what was the time frame you were there? You mentioned probably from about late 99 until mid 2000. So I was there, you know, I came in, everybody that I mentioned was in booking committee, I guess, at the time, I think dusty got let go a couple of weeks later and then within a couple weeks of that Vince Russo and Ed Ferrara came in from WWE and that's when everything structurally started to change. It went from a very short format to a very long detailed format every week. Right. You know, the 16 segs 210 components. Everything timed out in chunks of 20 seconds. You know, pretty much how shows, I think, I imagine there's still been the same way maybe with less long interview language, but because I know how it was like in WWE when Russo and Ferrara left. And it was a pretty big blow, at least to the locker room. The only guys that didn't really sell it were pat Patterson and Vince, McMahon, who were like, you guys have no idea it's really not as bad as you might think. What was like when you heard from your end in that writing room that Vince Russo was coming in. Was everybody super excited? Did they feel like it was a big coup to land Vince's quote unquote, right hand man, you know, at least we thought he was. Yeah, I think, you know, I'm not even sure who did the deal with him. I'm guessing it would have been JJ, Dylan, would have been the conduit for that. And I remember he told us these guys are coming in and we're all very, you know, we're all really excited. Let's try to make them, you know, let's really try to invite them in and they've done great things up there. And that's what everybody did. And they came, they came in. I think they had Bill banks with them as well. And I think Terry Taylor would have been a right behind those three that left immediately. So, you know, there was a lot of new people coming in and it was a big philosophical change. You know, Chris, I guess for me, I'm like, you know, my sort of my philosophy about the business is, you know, wins and losses matter, work rates are real important, character developments grow important, continuity is really important. That kind of stuff and the WWE, I think Vince Russo style was maybe a little more controversial, a little more not Jerry Springer has spent a lot of that kind of like real heavy on character conflict. Right. And I also like, well, you know, I'll do what I can to help me. This isn't what I would do, but I'm only here to help. And right away, the first week, Russo put me a gorilla. So kind of talk about a little bit for this perspective, so before we get into the Russo, I love this because you're just getting thrown in. Yeah. You know, but because let me ask you this first. How was your experience being in a rock and roll band? And, you know, having to go with the flow as we all know, you know, ant breaks down and you got to continue the show, whatever happens. How did that help you or hinder you in pro wrestling and live TV? I mean, once I got into gorilla, or with the whole thing, I mean, I have had a lot of stuff, like you said, a.m.'s break. You know, somebody gets hit with a bottle. Whatever happens, rock shows are especially at festivals, as you know, when stuff starts flying around, you're really no sound check, no mercy, just make it up as you go. I had done decades of heavy travel, the lifestyle. I mean, The Rock and roll lifestyle is pretty crazy, but the pro wrestling lifestyle was a bolder version I think of it at that time. So I guess I just had, you know, I could think on my feet, I could react pretty quickly. I could keep a lot of things straight at once. So I mean, I think that's why they probably sat me at gorilla and said, here you talk to Keith and you talk to the refs. And listen to.

"Is a move you never seen the WW. E anymore. A pile driver. Wait a minute. I wasn't really big on this spot. Yeah. Understand trying to make rock strong. I get that. And nobody wanted any more than I. But the kicking out of the power driver. Yeah, weakens weakens the appeal. That move should be the closer. Paul orndorff, that was the closer when he would put that on. About a hundred more guys. Yeah. That was who I always associate as a kid in the hate in my heyday in the 80s, man, it was the pop Paul orndorff Powell driver, man. Lawler was good. We're done in Memphis a lot, too. It's very good at it. Here we go, Triple H smacking him around a little bit now. I was going to mention here too, by the way, at the final four, China would make her debut. Well aware that she was lined up to join the federation at this point and become part of Triple H's group. Well, considering I did a contract. I was fairly informed. So there you go. That's another case of there. There you go. He can not keep The Rock shoulders down, rock continues to kick out. If you're not watching along, this is a good match. Talk about a strong opener raw. Thursday we're all Thursday, should I say? Lying on them up for the pedigree, you think Vince had a gleam in his eye at this point that he knew he had money in this matchup. For many years to come. Oh, you're watching this one. Yeah. And so did the agents. Guys like pat Patterson who evinces here and luckily for many of us that that happened, because that was a wealth of information and creativity. But fat laid this match out. It seems like everything he touched turned to gold JR as we go through these events. That had a way of identifying with the talents. And bringing their characters out of them. And putting them in a good spot in front of the camera. There's inside cradle, and that's it. He wins. He wins the title. Let's go to the announcers here. That was a fat Patterson quick.

"Whoever that was, were individuals that had to pay the price first. And we did. So I don't know. It's one of those ongoing, ever ending stories, a chaos, jealousy, mistrust, it was exactly everything that, in my world, I didn't want. Because the problems, you had the regular problems, travel, and payoffs, booking, and just going over and all this other that you do with every single day in that role. But man I never got so immersed in this cesspool of shit as I could ever imagine, and I didn't like it. Nobody liked it. I guarantee you, rusha tell you the truth is that none of us were having fun. Right. But we had jobs. And we were wrestling people. So what else are you going to do with that great degree you got wrestling? Well, you got to do the best you can to keep your job and contribute. And dig ourselves out of this hole. Well, we know what's coming next on the heels of learning hey man, the company's in some financial straits. It's the backstage fight. Things bubble over in real life. There's no cameras here for Sean and Brett. Here's what Brett, here's what Sean wrote about this in his book. By the time I wrestled in the tag match, Brett and I had nearly reached the breaking point. He had said bad things about my folks and apologized, but now he had going on to stir things up by telling the dirt sheets and others that a fake my injury and retired before WrestleMania, in order to avoid putting him over. On June 9th, we had a television taping and Hartford. I was in the dressing room when he came to me and said, I just want to say, and I cut him off before he could finish. Don't talk to me. You haven't said a word to me for three weeks. If you can't talk to me for three weeks, I don't want to talk to you now. I don't think Brett was used to people talking to him like that. About 5 minutes later, I was turning around to get some gear out of my bag and I felt somebody pushed me from behind. I turned around and Brad asked what's your fucking problem? You I yelled. He tried to punch me, but I peeled back and he missed. He pushed me again, but this time I stood up. He swung again and missed, and the next thing I knew, he went for a double leg dove. I caught him around the upper body, and we went straight back through a piece of panelling. We had each other in front face locks when pat Patterson and Davey boy came over and grabbed us. Pat was all in come on you guys. I'll let go and Brett yank the hair full, a handful of hair, out of my head. That hurt like heck, but I didn't retaliate. The fight was over. I went storming in Vince's office, and I told him I'm outta here. This is bullshit. I saw Aldo Montoya, who later wrestled here as just incredible, and asked him to give me a ride back to my hotel. He wasn't working that night, so he took me. I missed the show and flew home the next day. Vince sent my lawyer, skip McCormick, who had hired when I found out about Rhett's contract. A letter stating that I'd violated my contract. Skip responded by writing a letter claiming the WWE had failed to provide a safe working environment. Heard that one plenty of times, and skipped told me they were trying to blame everything on me, but once he wrote the letter back, and it would be back in their lap and they would have to ask me to come back. And that's exactly what happened. Now here's from Brent's perspective here's what Bret wrote at about 6 p.m. I went into the bathroom to jail my hair before going across all the type interviews. I was surprised to see Shawn's reflection go by me in the mirror. I could see he was up tight, so I smiled and casually said, hey, Sean, and he cut me off. Fuck you. You haven't talked to me for over a fucking month. What makes you think I'm gonna talk to you now? Even though I had hair gel all over my hands, I was primed to go back to my original plan. But Sean vanished through the doorway passed crush it was lacing up his boots and heard the whole thing. I set out to find Sean, but he was gone. I paced around the backstage area until O and Davey Jim and pillman came to find me. I know Sean's watching from somewhere, waiting on me to leave this room. I bet you the second I walk out of here, he'll walk in, all the stuff is in here. Watch. I cross the hall, walked into the interview room and cracked up in the door to peek back into the hall. Sean strode past me into the dressing room. He was bent over fixing his boots when I'm more straight up to him and I pushed him to his feet. You got something to say to me? And he flicked a Whig punch at me and missed. Balancing awkwardly on my good leg I popped him on the chin, rocking him on his heels. He came for me, so I grabbed him by his long mane and pretended I was going to do a hammer throw with the Olympics. I was dragging him around the room when a hysterical pat and frantic law I ran in and jumped on top of me. Unable to pry me off, shouted for the other wrestlers to help, but they being crush had no intention of saving Sean. It was nothing but a scratch fight, really, but when we were finally separated, clubs of Sean's precious hair fell from my hands. That's the fact that I was in there too. And that was all the things that happened. The most significant memory I have is weird as it probably sounds..

"And here comes the king's favorite to win it all. There he is. What a run he had had at this point. He still got hair, at least for a few more months until he gets the Nashville for Judgment Day and edge has something to say about that this coming may. Curt always reminds me of either a Danny Hodge or a Jack Briscoe in as much as the amateur background is amateur training was amazing. And how he adapted from the mat in a wrestling room to this. Yeah, I've never seen anything the closest thing I could say was probably Jack Briscoe. Kurt and Jack Briscoe are a whole hell of a lot of like. And of course Jack Briscoe became a NWA champion and so respected the Briscoe family as they deserve. So now we're back down to where we got four guys. They can pair off, they can work a few spots and all of them are players. Absolutely, you know, for the best that ever did it and this is actually gonna be the final four. These next four guys who are coming in are not gonna be long for this world as we start winding down. When I look back and I think about all of my favorite royal rumbles, I think 97 that you watch for Paul last week's probably my favorite and then probably 92 where flare one and I guess the 30 year anniversary of that was yesterday as people are listening to this, the 19th, but then it's probably this one as my third favorite rumble. Where does this rank for you all time is this top 5 rumble free? I think so. Yeah, I think so. I locked the booking of a pat Patterson on 99% sure laid this out, and this is his creation. So he always had a vision for the.

"That's what you can find. Because they're going to if they're going to do the honors, they want to do the honors where they have an out. It's not enough to have a great match to have a match that has some parody as far as who's on the offense the most or on defense the most, whatever. It's just somewhere along the way the fact that italic and convinced the old man are pat Patterson or somebody else that they need more gimmicks in the match or more announce in the match. I've got to be protected. Shows me that their talents are the wrong perspective. And what is the business main Conrad seriously here? When you can't another guy's finish. Yeah. You know what I mean? I don't get that. So if I'm a wrestler or to God thank God that never happened. To any degree, I don't know. I just don't understand the reasoning behind it. And the AEW for example, I don't know how we had some unique finishes on Saturday night in Minneapolis at full gear. But we had winners and losers. That's right. And the talents that dropped the falls, I never had one person that maybe they did was for their buddy. I can't believe I'm doing this. I don't think that ever happened. But I heard nobody complained of bitch in a moment. I always tell all of us that man is three seconds for that take place. How long's your match? Well, we've got 20 minutes. Okay. Then you've got 19 minutes and 57 seconds to kick ass. That's how I look at it. And then the finish has got to be led right into perfect and fit, like a glove. And I thought those guys did that, but our finishes became a gimmick too many gimmick finishes and guys felt uncomfortable even losing to another talents finish move. Can you imagine the revolt it would be if people had a problem? This show or shows leaders subsequently into this show putting all snow over with a stunner? If everybody with a stunner, that's hot, though that is how it's supposed to work. You win with your win with your finish. So anyway, it was a very troubling times. We were seen to be philosophically disjointed. Somewhat, too many cooks in the kitchen maybe. I don't know. I don't know exact reasons. I do know this that angles cut too short. It had a great future. If you had two leagues, you had a big enough roster to stalk the shells of two shows. And because of frustrations and politics and things of that nature are so it seemed to me. The angle was said, okay, let's just get out of the state. And that calls a lot of issues. We'll talk about here today. Let's also mention another quote from Meltzer here, perhaps the biggest frustration is that everyone knows the multi-million dollar angle that will turn the thing around. But it requires getting Bischoff Goldberg, et cetera, and requires the mcmahons to be vulnerable, and requires the long-term wrestlers to accept the idea that because business is bad. Some guys need to be jump started ahead of existing, and in most cases better talent. It's also mentioned here as he wraps up his diatribe here. It's not happening now, and it feels like we're in a holding pattern, waiting for of all people, Kevin Nash to save the day. And that's not a position I'd like to gamble the industry on. But I do think that he sort of hits the nail on the head. In order for this thing to have really worked, the mcmahons would have had to at least momentarily allowed. The perception that uh oh, WCW is going to kick our ass. And they probably didn't want to do that. And they would have had to open up the checkbook to get Eric Bischoff to lead this group, not one of the mcmahons. Well, here's the thing. And I don't need to cut you off, but I'm thinking about it. It takes two to tango. Sure. Some of those guys that have been mentioned here. Kevin Nash, et cetera, et cetera. How do we all know that they were warning to get back on the road? Warning at the latter stages of their career because all of them are had 20 years or so experience. They've been better than it's surgeries and all this stuff. How do we all know that they wanted to get back on road? Well, I can tell you who knows, I know. They weren't interested. And they were going to let their contracts play out with Time Warner. Because Time Warner was paying a handsome sum to those individuals. So there's two definitive ways of looking at this thing is Meltzer right that if we had our full complement of talents and we had Goldberg and you know, all the other guys that had, you know, hall and Nash and all that good stuff. Eric certainly Eric would have been perfect. But, you know, and I'm not saying Eric didn't want to come to work. I don't know that he did or he didn't, because I don't think he and I had a conversation about that at that point in time. But it was finally decided that he would come to work and he did a good job. Did a real good job. That hug, he had with McMahon on the stage as epic, and I thought Eric did a great job. He beat me in a match on raw, got color. What's he on? So anyhow, but it takes two to tango, some of those guys are sitting come back on the road. They weren't ready to come back on road yet. And those have been off Conrad. I want to make sure their bodies are right. Make sure they were healthy. They look good..

"To lose. And losing is not the end of the world. Like I said earlier about people losing their jobs. It is not the end of the world. Regroup. And so that audience I remember that audience there and it was like shock. And it was just, you know, things are things are happening that. We're planned. I love it. When that happens, but not to the extreme nature of somebody tearing the quadricep. Right. So but I thought it was stream booking and the guy he mentioned it. Pat Patterson said with him for that afternoon and had to navigate and to mitigate all the egos to get a story out of this thing and a lot of great spots as best thing. That was a great high spot Booker. Genius. And you know, he was a genius. So he's missed. So in any event, that's kind of where I left that deal. It was very traumatic day. You know, as a head of talent relations, I just lost another star. That's exactly where I'm headed with this. So hunters out for a long, long time, the show's got must go on, and I have to let's talk about this. Rocks gone, hunters gone. There's a lock at lack of a top tier talent. The next night, the very next night, at a SmackDown taping, it's decided to have a TLC match with very little height, by the way. It's between Benoit and Jericho, the Dudley's edge and Christian and the hardee's. I mean, there's a lot. Is this a ratings pop? Is that what we're trying to go for here? It's all that was. Yeah. You know, how do we go from that last encounter that we're Triple H got hurt and Austin was on the losing team? So yeah, it was just a little knee jerk. No doubt. But here's the other thing. On the other hand, you're not going to put the Dudley's and the hardee's in a match of this nature in a not be good. So you knew at least for the audience's sake, they're going to enjoy what they're seeing. And I thought that those guys also turned it on. You know, was it on the same level as some of the other great TLC matches where you had education to the mix and all that good stuff? I don't know. That's your opinion. Whatever you think is what it is. You'd be right. Your opinion is right. That's right. So you'll have them, right? Yeah. Yeah. So beautiful thing about this. We're allowed to have our own opinions. Yeah, I think so. So anyway, it was a little knee jerk booking. And they went to try to unlike the duchess of whatever match, the duchess of queensbury. Yeah, that never showed us ugly head again. You went back to something that had worked in the past. And the TLC match. And the audience was sold on it because they've seen some of them and they totally enjoyed them. All we're hoping to do is keep the momentum rolling for our team. And here's the irony of this thing. I can't understand, and you always got to prepare for the worst case scenarios I mentioned earlier. I can't understand why we didn't have people in the on deck circle. Ready to take that one step up or over or whatever you want how you want to determine to be that missing baby face that we're losing. We're not going to replace Triple H seamlessly. But we didn't provide the opportunities to have people ready in case something tragic happened. When we had also got hurt, we had a guy named Dwayne Johnson. That we never missed a beat. But, you know, those don't grow in trees. And rock had left to go explore his career, which is he's done pretty damn good at it, as a matter of fact. Unless I look, I'm proud of him. So, you know, that was bad. That was a creative malfunction. That was a we weren't doing a long-term planning. And that's why the TV seemed to be written. Ours before they aired. And that's not the best philosophy. Well, here we go, and this is a philosophy I'm going to ask you about. It's decided to shelve Austin and Jericho's feud and to include Benoit and make it a three way type of feud was this the right move in your mind. I'm going to share some of those thoughts with you here shortly. I don't know why we needed to do that quick. Would it be good? Yeah, of course it would be good. Anytime you can add a healthy Austin to Ben Juan Jericho, how can that be bad as far as mechanics of the match is concerned? I think it was another one of those issues where it was just a little bit rushed. And that was more of the norm than it should have been. And I don't have a ten reasons why or the company's run by one guy. That's what he wanted. He was convinced that this is what we should be doing by either his own his own creativity or somebody sold him on the idea. I don't know. It wouldn't be solely on it, because I thought, again, we run to those giving matches triple threats..

Rock have been watching some other wrestling because he's adding lot of new moves to what he's doing and the nice here. That was a shame that that closed from behind and another close on. It takes drop to the outside as jericho sailing. and shane didn't hold back on that close clotheslines. Even though he's here's working with a great one and that's that's good he didn't quote unquote take care of him or other very fiscal match taking a lot of bumps on the outside that black gnat. That's there were seeing right here at ringside was about. I guess about an inch. What much did offer some protection. Yeah it's better than when cowboy. Bill took all the maths away. And i had the run that he had this is. Nobody thought saw this jericho blood vatteroni outside couldn't do anything about the interference to own one and robin beat. The rock and the crowd is stunned. They are stunned. I you know. I've said this before. I don't like knowing the finish jericho. Hammers iraq right between the eyes. Steel chair chair cause bleeding and of course she gets up to the outside in the meantime in between time rockets in the shows you your team for the rock was even though he he got hit with a chair. Issue did this a lot of guys in his status. Say no don't right. You get jerko. Buddy beat him but the but rob van dam. Beating derogatory commercial was nothing short of very creative bookie because now you got an appointment for the rock. You people know can beat rock. If if the devastat correctly the rock had an out. You always want to give you top baby face or you're talking to you when they do the owners they'd lose pin polar submission. You gotta given out some way so it convinced storytelling in successive rematch. That is believable and inviolable. See Clip here from new york showing a little segment from sunday night the night before and was like a talk show set up here with crispin wa as one of the guests here. He sometimes very popular and that a lot of steps chelsea the fact that whoever's closest event steps dictator time going get paid on. They wanna buy anything. Maybe covertly the dirt the the of pack here s- lot of back There's a lot of packing that hogan the jealousy issues were or tough on tougher. Tougher hogan he. He got an unfair handed off often. The first thing when a talent got their booking sheet or so look and see where hogan walls and then hope that they're on that same card can they knew it was going to draw more money and the other cards so And that's the guy that got jealous over so this an t with t we really good and holland. Nasty good working. The refs not middling the referee their their bodies are suffering cheating shady somewhat disguised as thinks donald stretch created by wilbur. Snyder wrestling partner. Dick the bruiser. Rebecca indianapolis territory thing. Rexy is heels is way out of it to work for that tag in the corner but He's shutdown right before they would make savage good trauma syndrome and it's all about quite frankly. It's all about selling right now covered but stinks doing a hell with java selling savage during a hell of a job keeping the crowd and bested and his animation in an animated actions. So right now you get hall sting. Their legal savage cheerleading and nash. Waiting to get another tag to come in and trying to maintain the advantage. The psychology of a tag match. Paul is you cut the deal cutting the ring off and half or so that date what it means is going to wrestle. Most of them. Mashing your side of the rain on here in the order. You wanna cliche. You wanna use and you want to turn into a handicap match so if you got Got got a scenario. Where like this situation sting has been isolated savage just over there trying to help him the outside trying to control savage versus never been an easy task and savage has got to get back to his corner because the state does break free. There'll be nobody there to take. So you got you got to that as a baby face. Russell right now stings isolated. So essentially paul with this as love savage. Just out of the pitcher not tagged in Is a handicap match. It's hollow nash versus stink. And that's the art tag team wrestling against the the talk of oil. That died a line from the corner. You all all that means you won't as a tag team. You wanna turn this on a handicap match anybody that are historian so what's the old assassins so hamilton and tom. Resto are watch chain and only anderson and even telling our a midnight express. All those guys are expert. It's isolating one opponent from the pack and and then And then do their do their deeds on that quite frankly not always illegal. Just being very unrelenting shall we say and so it gets so you got you got jeopardy on the baby face key element. You got a baby face. It's not dime selling like crazy because he said immense jeopardy and got these two heels or smart and they're keeping staying in this case isolated three of the four guys here and by the way just for those at home trying to keep up with us work to thirty five thirty eight thirty nine forty time code. Check their three of the four have worked with pat patterson extensively in wwf. Think this is. You know you see some of that influence. When you're talking about this hot tag baby face. He'll work going on here. There's a tag t. We sold the tag like he was a drunk man. Because that's what the audience had been waiting on it and the audience gets a nice pop and savages in legal. That's exactly what the heels did not want to occur right but anybody that patterson Interacted with is going to learn a lot from him and they're going to carry. I guarantee you we got haller national phone right now They would concur. That we're assuming. That's pat patterson influence after you work with him. was profound and pro russian career. Low blow traditional. He'll move behind the referee's backs she the great thing about this as the utilize realization of peewee anderson. The referee and there comes The helps barry comes making his way down the ring the crowds to their feet and this is the start of the historic moment. That changed the business. Jr it really. I did it. It was a it was a positive fresh music music. By the way which is a lost art nowadays. Everybody needs music even for the surprises. That's lower thought. But you're right. Why would you do that. I don't get it well. it's about the entertainment as well. Kiss my ass entertain. I'm surprised if i'm surprised unexcited entertaining. Yeah i wanna be. I don't want. "Jarrett would help out but pat and vince where like the two people at one point in the eighties and nineties. Who wrote those shows when he's around given his experience did did you or did you notice other creative team. Members have developed a relationship with them. Did you feel comfortable asking him advice or questions did he. Come to you guys with evaluations. What was the dynamic like. And and the respect level or or or a wall perhaps that was built between those two sides patterson on the team. yeah patterson. I talked to you about this in the torch talk. I mean i honestly feel like patterson with my experience with him and his uncle quoted meetings that this is probably the guy that is most responsible for the success. Wwe vis the way that it's treats him leads me to believe that even more because if pat patterson says something done you wanna do that. Pat done and i think that he built out that that credibility that respect from bids to be able to say i i remember just just for one everyone was against is when we were doing. Nfl season one. And i think at one point you know it started off great and then it was just kinda like and we were in the meeting and it was they set up. He's later versus chris. Jericho jericho is going to go over. And pat patterson speaks opening. Goes you you guys. Want people to talk about this or tune in just have peace later over in it. I remember people producers and and even i think cost ski or whoever was I had to be costly because he was right in the show you know. Why would we do that. Well why not do it and it was it not to say that this was this great plan but just to go to show you and vince said he slater over. There was no argument. everyone was against pat. Pat says it. We're doing it and it's unfortunate that he's not so involved now Because i remember i would have conversations with that and sit down with them in hotel lobbies and just i'd pick him. I mean the stuff that. I that that that i vent to you on your show or on twitter on my website. I i would tibet and we'd sit there and talk for hours and just and he's sit there and go. Yeah i agree with you. I agree with everything you're saying. Are you remember. I can't remember the scenario. But he was so big on. When shameless won the world title. We were getting ready to just immediately. Put it right back on cnn. And he's you you sit here vince. And you want to build new stars. You got keep the title on him to mania. Have them go to mania. Have them win at mania and walk out his champion you know. Why are we putting the title right back on and Obviously that didn't happen. But i mean. Pat is pat had more power not not so much power but if his voice was listened to the product would be in a better situation. I mean he's the guy behind royal rumble. he's the guy behind Not saying that. This was amazing. The scramble i mean you at least. He's at ease innovative still and he tries to do things different and and i remember he would. We would have things where it'd be like. Wow how could we establish a new number one contender. We got a three hour. Show what can we do. I mean pat not even knowing any of this stuff ahead of time. We're just rattle off ideas. Why not do this do this and it was like wow like yes go with that one but you have people who don't want to hear his opinion like brian go words and unfortunately You know pat. Can i think. Vince also has to. But everyone know tat doesn't run the show. I do so everything that he says is not necessarily going to happen but there is a lot of times. It's vince would would say the production meeting would be over and he'd say hey pat stick around and just you know and everyone else would leave and it'd be him and pat talking. I think that is him going back to go and feeling comfortable and feeling like he has the person they're with the right answer. Yeah that was my next question. I was gonna ask is patterson's relationship with brian calvert. 'cause you know brian the new guy and i would think there would be if they didn't have a father son type relationship a mentor protege. Then it would be the opposite then it would be a sense of being threatened That that gourds would feel threatened. Because patterson is regarded as one of the all time great workers one of the all time. Great bookers one of the all time. Great wrestling minds and had a great relationship during a boom period or in expansion period. We'll call it for. Wwf and brian words is what. What about brian guards. Pat patterson gonna respect when it comes to his experience. And i know patterson respects people who drew who were on top. Who had that experience or who have really brings something else to the table. So that was kinda interesting is if the words felt a little threatened or or just not welcome by patterson as You know like pat looking at him like you're the guy who's now in my chair. Yeah and i think that it's easy. Maybe for brian to go that route and go. He doesn't respect me. Because i didn't go through the same trials and tribulations needed did or i didn't break my neck to be able to have the power that i have and i think that's the easy way out but brian rubs people the wrong way and what don't understand. I don't want to say this to you. But i'm just saying i guess ryan doesn't understand. Is that when you make people not like you for who you are. Then they're not going to support you and it has nothing to do with how you got your position because and i draw things to me a lot because i don't like to speak for other people and i know i do on occasion but You know pat had good relationships with guys on creative and me being one of where he would tell me mad. I liked this. Yes we should go with this. Yes you should pitch this or yes. I'll mention this for you but he. I don't think he was a big fan of bryan. Because bryan treats people like they're below him and i just don't get why i think it's complex being this kid who probably had no friends in school getting picked on who's probably never slept with anybody and going. Oh my gosh is the first time in my life. I'm in a position of power. And i'm going to make every single person pay for that and you know what if you're a diva and you're hot you're paying for every girl in the past that turned me down. If your you know the cool guy and your talent you're gonna pay for being that guy that stuff being locker And anyone who even thought me who it had with him all the time i mean i would be the only one who would sit here and go well. It wasn't every week. Sometimes i keep my mouth shut. Because i'm not going to stand up to the guy every single week over an idea but it'd be like hey guys what do you think of my idea and you he gives you this. Look like how dare you not go along with what i wanna do and i think pat will say what he wants to say if he disagrees with brian hill. Say not in these words that idea stupid. You need to try this. And that is the last thing that brian wants to hear. When he's sitting up at the front of the room reading the show research one to attack his work and he comes right back at you to. He'll say something right back at that time. Eating after the show's over he'll he'll address pat and say something condescending to them before pats even said anything. Wow wow so pad would recognize. Brian knows his name but has butted heads with him and doesn't doesn't respect them and when pat shows up it probably means brian's not having good of a day as he had hoped opinion by the way. That's my opinion. yes yes yes. Yes in your opinion. Brian from from what you've observed. Brian not excited on the inside when he sees that. Pat is chosen this weekend. He's going to be around not at all. yeah interesting. cool stuff well Thanks so much. "Brian or creative. What are we going to do. 'cause we're not doing this this week. okay well and then people just throw throwing throwing out ideas producers. Start throwing out ideas. And vince just picks the one he likes the most kevin you like it. Yeah i like it boom. We're going with that now. You have to restructure a completely new story. Basil's someone's pitching the creative me and maybe maybe it doesn't drastically change it but sometimes it really does so you know. I'm curious to see how much of this stays on track and how much you can kind of see as hurry up. And let's let's change this because you know the one thing to wade and i don't know what derating look like in the last two to three weeks leading up to money in the bank and then This coming monday. But you may see mr and vince going. Well probably hope to this working list. We'll get punk back in it at some point but that's jumped ship. And he seems tend to want to jump ship the second. There's a leak. Let's not try to pass the league just or a new boat in which jump on that new boat and four perspective. This monday show and this is a qualified complement was the best ratings since may twenty third so but we had july fourth which was a two point four the the week before. Which was i think. Part of the punk storyline for sure. You know he has to take credit but if he gets credit for three point two tube barely getting credit. 'cause people were disappointed by that rating. From what i saw from talking to. Wwe people tuesday night after smackdown taping if even gets credit for well at least it was better than what it had been. He gets credit for the two point nine one week before that also or the storyline does not just pod and the ratings before that were three point. One three working backwards three point. Eight three point zero five three point seven. There was at three point four two. I talked about that before that. Three point one three point two three point five three point five and now we're kind of get back into wrestlemanias season so you know. It's just basically the ballpark. It's just an average rating of what they've been doing Before we get to call john Just a take a turn here. I got a cold of another july of july cold after hanging out with your ex co work well not hanging out with being around him and meeting them Your ex coworkers. So writing thing david poor and different production people and other writers. Are they germy people. Well you these guys never get any sleep and they're on airplanes twice three times a week ago You know there was always somebody sick. Luckily i only caught it with one but Yeah you if you if you were around. And they probably had those little fleas right above their head. They just came over to you in a few. Why was around the wrestlers too and and Agents and had a nice time talking to pat patterson too so i it's not just writing but something about them just made me think they were to blame so and because you're on the show and used to work with him. I thought you could add particular insight into whether they're germany people in the reason that i got on creative not one person the other. There's never a week where someone is. Not sick yes yup.
