"A good check in decent seconds art collector who came back with charlestown classics but like we said earlier. Like thrown. Second more so than win. So we'll see played out you know. Look i think steve. There's a little bit over heavier. And forewarned I know tonight's little story there that you know you're famous from could go up one hundred and seventy one a couple of years ago but that that usually happens one You know you mentioned happy. Saver and i and i i've absolutely avoided bringing this up all week because it is so achingly sad but you On sunday With the with the news of america's joy Going wrong after a workout and falling and breaking her neck and The just heartsick for mandy pope That from every indication we had been hearing that she had been she'd been actually Working as well or better against happy saver and Just just too sad. She was working with What's called classy dish on sunday when it When that issue happened that you know out of the gate crappy believes in tomorrow I was extremely side for for all. It was not heartfelt. Don't to mandy again. They're they're every blocker You know i was in vegas and With the word spread Everybody that has you know that has got clocking is. We're like i mean this. This was this was a major talent as one would have expected as you know out of that. Out of leslie's lady. And many pope said just the worst luck Onto the flower bowl where warlike goddess has seemingly Got this field. You know where she wants them. My only concern for her but it hasn't really been concerned Entire stars this don't case in this race. I mean they're going to go every bit of fifty two or or or slower for the half. Would you thank god. Who do you see as i don't see the lovely lucky. Maybe she tried it last year. She got away with the flower last year. Fifty well she went forty eight and four last year but She ran she gonna even make believing sixty four this year. I i just don't know where that comes through. But maybe just powered over trump's pay and and you know she just comes with that same metric turn of foot that she's shown in her last three I tell you what they could run good lost ignoring one. Only one for last two years. she's coming out of some top quality races Second to maximum rate in the game. There's a tap pika who you might be the top even though she's only she's multiple grade one winner here in the us I think she could run pretty good. I think she has to prove yourself of the distance. The distance fear. That you know more. Like god i guess did winning allowance. Race is probably lucky. You seem to me but you know two people got expect. She'll she could be other lead sometimes. Sources get brave in the league. But i'm not gonna over think it I just put my trust in mr my and Got us azad very short price in the in the flower. Do we know anything about Peter brant source american bridge making the north american debut I think the only thing i know is that so probably stay here in chat after the race. I don't know much about the she want to three. But in italy in june She looks like she comes from out of it as well. It'll be basins in her. Apropos running lines but I'm not sure that i don't know much about will. The there isn't any recorded work here. I don't know we'll see later From mike if if maybe some there's been some gallup Watching when she wants she cleared quarantine. Because it doesn't it doesn't appear that she's been in the country that long i don't know all right. The saranac goes as the eighth starts. The late pick five and in here public sector returns for chad and never surprised for todd but jazz also got founder in here Pat mcburney invades like the king as well for wesley Just six and which is unusual. This racially spatially draws better than this. I'm going to get not knowing their schedule. Well i'm gonna get by three-year-old stake. It's kim touchdowns is probably worth more than two hundred thousand dollars so that would be my reasoning for the great great numbers Public sectors last three races evolve in solids You know the manila. Maybe got raided behind For whatever reason seem to get further off the pace Than was necessary when falling just short to original But i like. I like i think to figuration from sources. Probably pretty solid did wind up here already twice. Jobs there with the maiden win last year in the hall of fame on never surprise suspension. Really shake free in here. But i don't know you know. Little odds had run since january only to start.

"When the down put the partnership together to go to keelan for that yes there were not like that there were not that many seven-figure horses at the time and he went to the sale with two million. You could buy just about anything wanna bigger and and bought some very nice pedigrees. Obviously sloan cat Yeah and that. The closest didn't partnership. I believe four of them were stakes winners. So wow wow. I think we do have julie. Now julie krone nine jewelry. That's you got pat mcburney and john pirata with you. Oh voted yes julie. Talking tale the cat And before we listened to the king's bishop just we're very sorry about the john I know that you help. Spread the word and let people know sunday You know some thoughts about what john meant to you and your career saw something. I was just thinking about. It was really really nice to listen to the stories and reminisce and I kept even though. I'm look i'm really sad and i just hung up with vic me and you know asking her stuff about how she's feeling and stuff and what john wanted you know where he wanted he stuff to go and i just kept circling around like these things in my mind. I just ended up laughing or just feeling better about myself Lease aiding things. He has has said to me now. One of the first things first ones anyone ever taught me. How to meditate moose. Nicole was johnson intact on monday. It was like one of the mighty going to be like the third or fourth time. I ever talked to him for longer period of time than this same like you know talk about horses so he was like hey come come i want you to do something he what you want. I want you do this by dismounting. We're gonna mind game. And i say okay. What is it john. Because he's like he had the greatest story long story fishy trips and just really like he's a real. The art of the language was like he's just so good at talking so he's like talking to me because think about a dog so little puppy in rain with a ball rate and started to smile and he goes see. How do you feel. How do you feel nicer. we're looked at me. I'm even smiling. You know and he was okay now now on. Somebody came to the door and they left the door open in car went. Ran your puppy over. Now you're puppy dead. And i was like why would you do to me. I'm like why would you you feel like why would you make me feel sad like that. Like he has no no. I didn't look what you just did. How did you do that. And i'm like what and he's like how did you. How did you just feel happy. And then just feel sad and say well you told me to think of those things. And he was like whoa. Isn't that amazing. Powerful minds are and he would like walk away. L. d. be i.

"Thank you steve. We appreciate that. You took the time to honor jones. That's one of them. One of the things that is difficult but we you know given the the circle of friends and and even the way everybody around the gema that such a the such an interconnectedness and with with john crossing over from the training side too. You know the representation side the really wideness really wide. His you know his sphere of influence so a turn from turn from that side of his career and life to the racetrack side and pat. Mcburney is gonna join us. And then julie and john pirata sitting in at the studio as well who worked Worked with with bad and and julianne john as well and The the the horsemen that was most immediately. "And case you could reach for for. Dennis said he'd be available at eleven. So you could reach for. Dennis strays it. Then we'll we'll add that to the and you wanna you wanna talk about the the riders. John had around. I mean part of my deal with him in the late seventies was that i you know worked as a stable agent but i also worked as that. The part of my deal was. I was jocky agent for the stable rider so i went through a few riders with them. We try this guy would try that guy. He used to like to get them when they had the bug because they were more teachable and of course the my success story with him was cassisi lopez chucky lopez who was leading writers leading bug up mom at the first year he rode any any spent thirty days in suspension. During that i think it was less than ninety day. Meet spent about a third of it and he was still the leading bug but julie krone is is probably the greatest testament to johnson johnson ability to teach and and you know imb sensitivity into a writer the get them to pay attention to the esoteric. I'm julie just answering attacks from julie who's about When when we can expect for us to call All right dentist needs another couple of minutes. Well then you know we could do a case. Why don't you. Why don't you get alan foreman. And then why. Don't we do that. And i know it's at rose. Incentives regrets he had. He had closing this morning that he was working on so he couldn't make it. But i wish i could have had him. You can have some other time. He has great forbes story back to the days when when his father had horses with big john. John was an assistant trainer. They were good friends over the years. What Which barn did he have a moment. I don't know what the number of it was. It was by the threes poll gap. Right down there. So so the third barn from the end. Eric forever yeah everybody that that's one of the things That i don't remember the name the numbers but it was an interesting crew. Like i said it's the people that went through that barn and the horses that back then claiming was was really act. They were sure it was a big part of the game. And you know there was thirty. Five hundred dollar claims people actually wanted to thirty five hundred dollars back in the days nowadays. It's a please. Let me Let let's welcome allen form an and For those that didn't see the statement from him. Allen and the t. h. a. And and elsewhere allen has been widely quoted the allen so about John and you had a professional and relationship and friendship for several decades morning. Steve and combining john Yeah the hits. Keep coming You know i've lost two of my closest friends. In the last couple of years and they were both Absolutely instrumental In the formation of the ta but personally and just the development of my career and Yeah this this one hurts me really bad. Because i really i go back with john long way and we had a personal bond and i you know i was just blown away but when i got the call i i made reference to him essentially breaking off his career allen as a as a trainer to dedicate himself to the horsemen and to monmouth future on dentistry. Isn in will visit after you and dennis. I'm sure we'll you know we'll flesh that out but Talk about how you know. How instrumental mental he. He became to representing the horsemen in the the new jersey. Well you didn't break it off When he stopped training and began working with the with the horsemen. He did that long before When i came into the industry i was introduced to john because of his maryland. Background and When i finished my stint in the maryland attorney general's office and maryland. Horse me and ask me if i would be willing to handle some of their legal matters and become their council dish into my law. Practice they One of the executives wind right already. Had quite a relationship with john through maryland john in new jersey and maryland horsemen felt. I should be working with the national Horsemen construction at that time. Most of the national hp and the various affiliates and they national. Hp bpa was searching for national general council..

"And can't recall the horse's name regal something we've bought him from through calder for guy named jim scuitto chico And then again. The that developed a relationship with john forbes and jim guitar gio that that eventually turned into named tale of the cat but the syndicate that john and mcburney put together. And eddie rosen was their pedigree adviser. I was very successful one of those early successful ventures back in was that ninety three something like two three younger early mid ninety s know. It's funny i. I'm pulling up trying to pull up horses as you mentioned and That cool virginia was a nice horse. Ice cap paid for mr colour. And actually he bred him to maryland bred and he was. He became a state course. Mike maselli was a semi regular writer. Yeah that's right now. There's a lot of those names gotta come out of you getting conversations with people that forbes. He touched so many people in in that mid atlantic area there because like i said he one day we were running at five different tracks so he was. He was wasn't not only a basically a thought of as a new jersey guy. He was maryland trainer and coming from that john. Tamara big john school of trainers. I think that was similar to analogous to lucas. And you know his crew. And woody stevens in his office. You know offshoots and a lot of those guys. developed. They've developed a system as well as horsemanship and the but The one thing about john was he was similar to job big giant marilyn that he was one of those intuitive horsemen. He would go stand out at the rail in the morning and just a soak up everything like a sponge and he'd come back and he could tell you anything about any horse. How did he. How did he get on the racetrack. A trainer and his mother. I think mother was one of the first first women to have a trainer's licence. Mary her in her. I think as mother. I forget what his first name was but Both his parents horse trainer so he came from the deep background and Like i said that maryland maryland was a nursery for for great horseman back. In those days dickey troch came out of there that all from there sunny hind came from there. The wolfendale 's boss vaas all of the great horseman their horses. Oh you know giving the paddock. They always look good. You couldn't just go in and say. Oh i'll pick the one that looks good because you had those guys in there that's four or five of them looked good. And i'm you know we're gonna we'll hear from between between dentist raisin and alan foreman and and pat mcburney will will. I'm sure we'll any and all can talk about the monmouth The the scenario that monmouth became an adopted home to him. And and really. I really kind of puts put its claws into him. I mean he became completely dedicated to you. Know a the future for monmouth and you know essentially left the training side to do that to you. Know to take over the t. h. a. the jersey horsemen and allen. Talk about it because you know his entire tenure from that standpoint is is with the t. h. a. and allen. But he he came to love monmouth. Dennis say it will tell you right away and allen as well that john forbes fingerprints are all over monmouth these days. If it's if it's still there he's one of the big reasons that it is given you're given the the period that you were involved. I it it is interesting. I mean that a maryland. Maryland bred Type would you know would just become as as enamored method. And i'll admit i mean for me. It was unique because it was really the first racetrack that i could go on a on a regular basis when i lived in brielle and so that that's where my affection people every every summer and and you know people hear me just kind of cooling over monmouth and and a lot of the quotes i've seen from john it in pieces that were you know the the asbury park press and there's a piece of sl that i saw he. He really has that same. That same sense about what are unique place. it is and It completely well one of those things back in that in that seventy which really looking back now. Those of us that were active in the game from the late seventies through the eighties. We did see. The best of modern racing was really racing was strong sport at that point it it started to taper off. You know i guess the eighties and and had a little rough spot there. But but when we saw horses like spectacular bid and a seattle slew and affirmed of those sources ruffy and we saw them all the time and great trainers all came to monmouth. Mac miller woody stevens. Stay all us to ship down to monmouth a lot of times. They use it as a prep for the bigger races. In new york but The trainers in maryland constantly shipped up the bonds. It was bose bond. Made his home in new jersey. But his brother bernie was one of the one of the prominent trainers down in maryland. And you would get all those better trainers. They would ship a horse the mama's when they thought it was appropriate. And then they'll once they got there they liked. The mom had a reputation for.

Many computers worth of of these cots. There are We we we've got. Our certain february is active. A lotta times for this because not only. Is there groundhog day. Listen to but we've also got what two weeks two weeks from. Today i think right. Is i think. Fat tuesday mardi gras starts on the sixteenth. So yeah i. I wish boy. I wish i wish i was planning to be in new orleans and i had. I had some inklings. I i certainly i certainly saved some flight information on on the calendar but i i just haven't even had even balked anything i mean it's just a just tough and i suppose that you know when it comes to some of the big days that lie ahead We'll be watching for specific headcounts. I did see. I think i saw earlier In the last half hour that i see us. Yes super bowl. Attendance will be twenty five thousand. So i don't know what the capacity is at at tampa. What is it probably seventy five. Maybe thirty five percent forty percent Of the sixty five thousand was the is the capacity at Can you still. can you still call it. The some brow- it's not the same. It's not this obrero anymore but some of you. Some of you have a certain age. Have no idea what i'm referencing. Calling calling the stadium calling the stadium. The sombrero Our friend alex bar coffin in new orleans Mentioning just send me a note You know the parades have all been canceled So that That's that's something that i've i've keeton radar and and doug have said they've they've told us that Teen i that we have to. We have to sign onto a crew and do have a ride on a mardi gras parade float at some point in our life. I i guess. I it's not cheap it. It's a few thousand i think To you know but it's one of those you know once in a lifetime kinds of experiences which are nice well and Well that's funny. Yeah the alex just followed up and said that everybody is not to be not to be dissuaded in new orleans their decorating the houses As if they're parade floats which is pretty cool. Probably with those. Yeah with the big the big heads. And and what's the movie. The clint eastwood movie. I want i want to say tight rope. Which is a pretty taught Thriller where he's a He's a detective in new orleans and there's a scene in a warehouse and i think this has been done a few. Maybe not just entire rope. There's the scene in one of those warehouses where they keep the the mardi gras paraphernalia. The the big giant heads that that go on the Afloat well as it happens. I and with alex mentioning this about decorating the homes. I mean i. I've got I was inspired a couple of years ago. I think i talked about this. that The way people decorate in new orleans. And i took a bunch of pictures and i was particularly taken by the mardi gras wreaths on doors and also like bunting and and And the like. And i found a woman who i've talked about her and unfortunately she is not doing these wreaths anymore she had a whole array of them But last year at some point Her name was kind of interesting. Lay theresa's zito from baton rouge and she had an oetzi shop and i found her stuff in and she had these gorgeous mardi gras reads so i ordered one for For our house. And in fact the tina put up the just the other day because they said you know we're within two weeks of of mardi gras But we actually. Tina reached out to her to to make a couple more. Because we also got a beautiful christmas thing from her and she told tina she she stopped doing it during pandemic she said it. The supplies became impossible to get so. She has stopped sadly because tina was going to get more. She was like an easter one and You know i i. I talked to her about doing specialty ones for saratoga breeders cup and derby and all that and she happens to be she i said to her. You know you're you have your name. You got a namesake in racing. And she said we're related. You said my my my my father They're like second cousins. Several times removed to nick zito. It's kind of funny. And i ask nick about nick. Said he said he's got relatives like all over the country. You said that he said ultimately every zito is is related. They never asked him about barry zito of the right of the the fast. Come about barry zito. I if if nick is related well John pirata is arrived at the studio. And obviously i was just kind of spending some time waiting for johnny the to arrive. And we're going to spend the next hour and twenty appreciating the career and the life of john forbes and you know some some horsemen have have national reputations and our and are known industry-wide and others regional or local and john probably fits the regional the northeast and the mid atlantic venues and beyond that portion of his training. Career is the behind the scenes. That really made him a just a treasure for the racetrack community for monmouth. And for the horsemen. And you know that that works and is involved. I mentioned we're gonna we're gonna hear from really both sides both the racetrack training side and From the horsemen slash management side of things too with demonstration and alan forman but pat mcburney and and julie krone and john who has been really. I can could tell on sunday. was shaken by the news John's passing just seventy three and i john. I think you set up now. I am steve. Nice to nice to talk to you. Know nice occasion but Yeah i used to be here. See casey john forbes was was was a pivotal point. In my life i had been the jocky agent for a number of years In seventy eight. I went to work with him. He he suggested to me that he he was getting so big that he needed a stable agent and a stable manager. So i came on kind of business in the business capacity for him. I think i would say you can ask mcburney. I think john had about one hundred and twenty-five horses in training that had worse at monmouth the yatiman maryland and delaware..

"Comes up October the second week of October I've. but at this point you know talking with the owners prior to this race and kind of on the on the the path we're on we were we were kind of hoping that if we if we were to run another big race yesterday that we would go onto the breeders, Cup Dirt Mile and as of this morning the you know we're GonNa get him back home tomorrow and those if everything checks out. And he's doing fantastic. Our plan is to to run there and just train them up to the race. He's always run run really well fresh. He's a horse that puts a lot into his training and gets a lot out of it and That's our plan was to kind of sandwich these two racist together if it worked out and then and then train up to the breeders. Cup. So fingers crossed that's where we're headed. I love it and that's gotta be. That's gotta be. A perfect scenario for you I dow. Nicer, could this have worked out? Not Any nights or so far. That's for sure we I'm anxious to get him. Get him home and see him. It's so it's. It's a such a weird time we're living in watching you know having your best source on the road and watching among I watched the race yesterday on my bed in the car at Keeneland at the sale So it was. A bizarre experience but I would like to just. Express my sincere gratitude and thanks to Pat McBurney who so many people know and love it vomits a great guy and his him and his crew just took.

At mom smart used to be kind of area where they would store expert equipment and movie thing than John. Just thought. To add a miniature golf course of the fantastic and why he got the idea like long on. After work and before fi time, I would go back in that area and there was enough food could chip coughing. Terrible, now for which I still to this day black practice and he will be a good place for a little miniature golf course. And you researched it and the company is ties to eighteen hole courses. Actually hosted the master's. Twice now for miniature golf and It's an international advanced, but it's just a gorgeous fun place and now. Now. There's the Blue Grotto restaurant like side there the beer garden underneath. Yeah family can spend a day there and have burgers pizzas and whatever and afterwards. So it's Just a fun fun area right across from the Racetrack and dad can. Actually from the garden and make it better to if he wishes. So yes. Very nice. Fantastic, there's actually a website. You can go to the Bluegrass, mini golf course website and I on there and I was looking at some of the holes and I had no idea that there were majors in mini golf and that there were actually professional mini golf players I didn't even know it existed. Neither. Did I till a couple of years ago. So yeah. Yeah, the other cool thing I read in the story was about the lawn jockey that's positioned on the eighteenth hole, the the home whole Do you know do you remember when talking about their with the lawn jockey and the colors of the lawn? Jackie. I know that there's a two of them up there. One has a dentist raisins. CELTS and the other has the Abo. Silks. Yup, but also each of the holder named after famous races up there too. So that's the plaques are there and you can read about their resources. It's very interesting. Pretty Cool I bet you never thought you'd be the inspiration for a mini golf course. Now. With my bad off game. Yeah Pretty Cool trainer Pat McBurney here on trainer talked, we have less than two minutes, pat. So I always like to end by asking a trainer to tell us something about him. Maybe we haven't touched on yet or a hobby that you might get into outside of horse racing any other interests that you have away from the race track what might be I mean I enjoy fresh water fishing and golf like I just mentioned. Had read where you know getting a little older for you when you try to keep your mind sharp. and honestly, I haven't been practicing the last year and a half but I had taken up the violin and I think we'll get back into that keep my fingers number and everything like that. So. Wow good for you. MULTI-TALENTED PAT McBurney here on the horse racing. Radio Network, and trainer talk presented by Phasing Tipton. Pat Listen. "Four or five minutes to make a decision watching them walk into the paddock before. At monmouth Park it's ten minutes. Once a clock goes ten minutes you can't drop the claim, slip some tracks. It's twelve, some tracks fifteen. So you literally had three to five minutes to make that decision on spending. Anywhere from five to fifty, thousand on a horse. So it helps it'd be a team that individual before and like I said, nowadays we go back we watch the replays you see. Changes leads how horse travels in a raise if you like that or not. So yeah, I mean the technology nowadays makes it easier and then you also have their numbers, rackets, numbers, buyer numbers I mean you you kind of know the level competition which maybe back in the day, you could really improve a horse because all this information wasn't available. But it's still A. Chess game like no trainer wants to lose a good person. Trainer was to claim to slow so. Yeah and you know you mentioned all the information that's out there now and the difference in the approach to claiming horses. Now, as opposed to back before you know we had replaced that kind of stuff and I guess, pat it similar to what we hear about with handicappers where there's so much information out there everybody has speed figures. Everybody has these these. Numbers that used to be reserved for just the the folks who really pay attention and you kinda almost bring everybody onto a more level playing field. It does it in some respects because there is so much information out there. Does it make the claiming game? Maybe even a little more I don't know if difficult right word or more competitive. Probably more competitive like you said. Mike. because. We all we all can access the same information I have I. Mean. There's there's That strictly rely on bill just drop the slip without looking at just. On. Form and numbers which you know you still need individual like. Me You don't want little scrawny three role because now this time of year, all the races are three up. So if the individual has you know just because, of course, ran a fast race once or twice. You need to think we'll develop and continue to do that like what the horse does today when I claim, it really doesn't matter to me. It's like the Horse Back to the barn is the Hor- sound and can I you know? Get divorced into a spot as long as sound and I can get them healthy and happy and and training how we want, and then we'll go out there and perform for you so. What do you consider to be the greatest claim you've ever made? I mean you mentioned peanut butter on it way back when we had a horse make a decision also won the ocean port. This is all John. Forbes. It seemed. It seemed like he could probably claim horses easier back. Then like I said, a lot of people weren't aware that you know if you claim the Horse for fifteen to twenty thousand and that was a lot of money back in the eighties and early nineties and a solid claim invoice could go through their lousy conditions and maybe even step up into the little stake races at that time and perform well. Nowadays. Most. Recently. I. Mean there's been more as. You know just. We have a horse named Tree Shaker who took very cheap and we just thought he would take the turf. and. He's been a lot of fun over the last couple of years. He's won four or five races. You know in the last two or three years and we turn them out every year and just keep them strictly on turf now. But It's just a little success like that. You know you turn around or you get your own during the winter circle and that that's the fun of the claiming game compared to whether you breed 'em or the yearlings we buy because like a yearling, you almost have to give them their whole two year old year where a claiming horse in two or three weeks the back in action. So yes, it depends on what the clients can. Pat McBurney with me here on trainer talk presented by phasing, Tipton tell me about a horse. By the name of just call Kenny I know he has to hold a special place in your heart. Kenny was tacitly bought him as. A yearling and he turned. On January. First of his three year, he want to stay race. At Gulfstream Park only because we couldn't get an allowance race to go for I'm going six furlongs and he went on to be Just. One Heck of a fund racehorse. He had his check in for minor injuries along the way but Always performed very well in super hard for us so. When I get a sense that he was going to be a special horse. Almost almost from day one Terry Gabriel go to the sales with us and break feelings in. folsom Louisiana thought that he was special and I mean, he was to this. Anyone saw him and he would walk in Paddock and he just was such A. Gorgeous look at race or is he caught everyone's eye and and he's from his very first breeze and everything he was just like. Here, the expression, a man among boys when he was a two year old, he won start. At monmouth Park, and then like I said, had a three year old year and then some setbacks but it's just always a special special. They're gonNA lose tried very hard to. And that big gray three win in. The IS LM stakes back in two thousand, seventeen, a special moment for you and for the team I know as the Islam one of the major races on the calendar every year at Monmouth Park. In New Jersey tell me about is getting ready for the show pat and I made it a point. We only have a few minutes left, but I made it a point to rate a that I had to ask you about this. Tell me about bluegrass mini golf course..

"Well, it's first race as a four year old, at Mama, Park literally drug groom to the Paddock took to the turf course and went onto the the first over a million dollars per John Forbes so and run multiple multiple. Greatest fake races and is in the Mamas. Fame too little He was a lot of flooding of the best. The biggest name I got to be around with John was obviously killed the cat. And in that same partnership, there were a couple of Phillies Amarillo who won the Delaware Handicap I mean just Pay Course, after stay cooler. So was fun fun being involved in the Partnership And Win John Retired. A lot of the partners now are still with me and we have the partnerships going on so. You get to be around some nice pedigree, young. And the plan is if your show they have talent at three and four, we keep them if not then they go to the claiming races or retired depending on their level of ability. But yes, just a a wonderful. Way, to, keep young horses coming in Barton every year so. You know when I was looking back through all of the great stakes winners that came through John's operation, and of course, as I mentioned, you had a big hand in that There was one name I wasn't familiar with the name. So I went back and looked up the horse, but I thought the name cool. The name of the horses peanut butter on it tell me about that horse. Peanut butter on it was a chestnut gambling that we had claimed for a client I think for twenty five thousand and he also went on to win many stakes and yeah he was just a big need gelding and and couldn't have been more fun to be around and yeah, he was very Very precocious at monmouth Clark's they use a lot of fun to. Did it help when you ended up taking over after John Retired and I guess that's the way it went down. Right? You ended up taking over his operation pretty much and then and then moving on from there is that right? Correct Yeah Yeah Okay would you ended up taking over the operation? Does it help you now having been around so many good horses does that help a trainer when they when they finally take over and start doing it on their own? Yeah I think to be around nice horses but also us being the claiming operation. You know knowing what it takes to keep a horse sand and and feeling good. Yes. Like I said, the back I was always around forty or more staples, and at one time John had free springs forces I was in charge of one. Kind. And and back, then it was unheard of to have that many bushes now. Now they're screen as it has probably two or three times as many voices as we had back then but Just to see the numbers. and to be around forty four stable just shows you so much. So yeah. Talking we trainer Pat McBurney here on trainer talk presented by phase tipped of course that big win this past weekend Golden Brown and the Irish War Cry Handicap at Monmouth. That's just one of many big moments. He's been part of in his career and talking about John Forbes who he worked with for a long time You know there there's There's horsemen game and there are trainers in this game and and I've done the show long enough. Now Pat to realize that there's a difference between the two. There are true horsemen and I think when you look at a guy like John Forbes. You look at him as a horseman right you don't look at him a strictly just a trainer. Correct. Yeah. I, mean the way he was raised with the family and everything and and the work ethic of John Tomorrow Staples. was. John Forbes. John's own son John Tomorrow's a fourth I believe and yeah, I mean just the whole family was into horse racing. So And, you mentioned the claiming game and obviously acclaiming operation and keeping horses sound in how do you do that? Take me inside that. That's a whole different approach to training take me inside the claiming game and and your approach in your philosophy to being successful in that arena. I mean there, there are so many tools available nowadays that maybe we didn't have. But one of the main things going back to John Kamara was like marking the program he would have John Forbes and his son John Tomorrow and. His other Mike Tomorrow I mean their job would be to stand at the paddock all day and just mark the legs of every course in and spot potential clean gin you look at the leasing form. And there were a lot more levels back then of course, racing back then. But Big John's Kalafi, was you know it? Can only improve a racehorse if you can train them. If, you claim a sore horse, you can improve them because he can't take the training and I mean back then big John Tomorrow with Klay, Morse's, and they'd go on to win stake races. and. Yeah the whole philosophy of you know if. We had a bad mark on a horse within like California move. You know win lose or draw. There were no qualms about it. You just would move onto the next one because. He'd also say you know. If don't spend the money, you can't lose the money he said when you. said. If you're going to claim horse, you claim it that's your money you're spending so i. Prefer not to claim the horse that I hadn't seen, but we also have horses come in from all over the racetrack. So literally, when forces in a claiming race.

"Meet. John Forbes who had a string big John. Tomorrow's horses at the time and was a force in Maryland racing. So I got surrounded by. You know when you're around forty plus horses every day you get to learn a lot more than if you're an five or ten more stable. So he just went on from being a hot locker room to form and work our way up so. A lot of fun and enjoy to day. You know. So many people myself included started like yourself pack going to the races betting horses trying to hit that Trifecta in the last race in the late double or whatever it is and eventually found their way into working in the sport. When did you know that you went to go from just being a fan to getting involved in the sport? Somehow Just almost ever since starting out walking horse in the morning, just love being around the race. And and then like you said, the puzzle of the handicapping game on top of it, I mean just the two things that is just so much excitement and. The links, sources themselves are fantastic. Be around like just watching a horse. You can tell when they start to feel good or acting good or training good and. And everything you you learn about the game whether bump leaving the starting gate just you know that adds to the puzzle of the afternoon racing. So yeah, just the whole everything from morning to. The last race of a day is a lot of fun in thoroughbred horse racing so was there ever a point in the early part of your journey? Pat when you were thinking about getting started you start walking hot? That you said. I don't know maybe there is something else out there. Maybe I do want to do something outside of horse racing. was there ever that moment for you? There really wasn't. It was probably. After my junior year of high school and I've been on the racetrack year where I thought that being a veterinarian would've been A. Wonderful Path to look on. In that then you but. Unfortunately. He'd let my grades slip that year like every. Every college applied to it did not look like that would pan out so You're just stuck with the racehorse end of it so. Yeah no regrets whatsoever. Yeah and it's worked out really really well for you. You're sitting here right now with almost three hundred career victories as a trainer, which I know has to mean a lot to you more than ten million dollars in career earnings according to Equa basis showing and that's a big deal in a multiple greatest stakes winning trainer Talk about some of the people, Pat and the things you learn from them along the way that helped you get to this point. I mean. If you go back to the very beginning at Louis race track and being a hot walker and then a groom and a couple of young guys like myself, Steve Brown and Games Paulie. Around the barn all day and and to his credit doctor Jimmy Stewart. Marion in Maryland. Save our bar until last and and more times than not. John. was there himself if we had a horse to look at? Dr Snow with liberty spend hours with. By showing us what he was seeing and what should be addressed on a thorough but a great scores you know whether it was a problem with it wasn't a problem just the overall health of horses so. Learning everything you ten. And it really comes down to I mean if you can get your voice good and healthy take care of physically he's GonNa. Go out there and perform theory in his. Early years of doing that and then following up in. Florida with Dr Ben Franklin. Did the same for John and I with signed an crumbs anything because they were prevalent with the calder cartons surface way back then I mean just the overall learning and you know just try like each tour trying to figure out what? To get them healthy, makes them half happy in the and performed for you. So yeah. Yeah and John Forbes I. At the introduction that he was eight New Jersey legend, there's no doubt about it. He trained before his retirement more than twenty one hundred winners. What may John. Forbes such a good trainer. One I guess. I mean this bad his father and mother both trainers you know. So he was from a long line of Maryland. And then it seemed like getting involved with. John. Really really got got him to be around large stable of horses and I think that's it the exposure to a large stable of horses and and John Fourth, would say, say about big John He was more than human. I mean he just he looks figure out and. It's just amazing. So. I was lucky to be around like I said, large stables of horses with to to that. You know like their main focus was. What makes this horses happy and healthy as he can be Taken from there then they go out and perform on the racetrack south. What was your first year with John? It had to be back around nineteen, seventy two or so nineteen seventy-three and Louis Maryland so. Yeah. boy what a ride that was and so many graded stakes winners came through that barn and you had the privilege to be around. So many of them who are some of the horses that when you think back on that time path that you're you're always gonNA. Remember. I mean, there was one horse was a particular favorite of mine and it was and he He was not a superstar by any means, but he was just a beautiful chestnut colt named like Ron Charles, and if you can imagine, you hear the stories forces have been warned he had the two lumps on his head like he had horns and he was just a a nice three or a little bit. We'd run two terms. But from there you go to speaking about voices being gilded get serious. As a three year old came out and was very fast with toward the end of his three year old season he literally would take thirty to forty minutes to get to the paddock. And at the end of his three-year-old year, the decision was made.

"And if you miss any portion of this interview in the first half of the show, don't worry. We will replay the entire interview in the second half of today's program. Keep in mind that in the years that my guest tonight spent working with and learning from John, he had the chance to be around such standout greatest stakes horses as time ocean port. Handicap winner Boyce and Delaware. Handicap winner Amarillo get serious who recorded five graded stakes wins including three in the red bank stakes and, of course, the talented tell the cat who won the king's Bishop at Saratoga in nineteen ninety-seven seven but this past weekend was pretty good for the guest on today's show he saddled on his own by the way his five year old New Jersey Bred Golden Brown prior to victory in on this Irish War Cry Handicap, and he is trainer Pat McBurney and he is with me now on trainer talk presented by Phasing Tipton Pat Welcome to the show and congrats on that big win this weekend. Thank you Mike appreciate it. But that's a good horse isn't it? He's been lot of fun to be around. He was a bit of a handful as a three year old and we went ahead and gelded him and. Calmed down and turned into heck of a racehorse scores so It's amazing. The difference that that can make with a racehorse. We hear that a lot and people that are listening that might not be in tune. With, the way that trainers make those decisions. You. Know you look at horse and you say, okay, this horse has a lot of value. We don't really WANNA. Make that moving geld him because it takes being a stallion out of play. How Difficult Pat, can it be to make that call? It it is very difficult and and him being one of the partnership courses we always like to buy you know the colts or the phillies and pet agree probably in an awfully wild wasn't strong. them develop and see what kind of horses they're going to be. And it it became apparent in his three-year-old year he was having a good year but just in Jersey breads. It was just. A real I mean, we just fall apart in the paddock before raise where he would be dripping wet and like the beaten me and the jockey to try to get him up on them and everything. So the decision was made at that point he'd be a better racehorse as a gelding. So that's what we did it with him. Well, he's now one eight, two lifetime starts. He's earned I guess just over half a million dollars in his career and you know that has to be rewarding for you too. You have this New Jersey bread you know he has talent you make that call it turns out to be the right call, and now here he is with more than half a million dollars in earnings. Yeah he's been. He's been steady and solid every year he'll do her for dirt. He does prefer meyler further. But and when we when we picked in when he made the short-listed, the tipped October sale didn't even realize he was in New Jersey bread until one of the other members of the team pointed out. Oh, we come to Kentucky by New Jersey Bread so come a fun story with him for sure It yeah and it's been a fun ride E- is a grade three winner to listen that overlook that he took you to grade three success with that win in the Kent stakes back in two thousand, eighteen at Delaware that that had to be pretty special to. Yeah, that was a fantastic day at some of the owners were down at Delaware that day, and if to get a great win with him was fantastic. So. When you have a horse of this caliber pat and I know you've been around a lot of good horses in your career even when you were working with John and we'll talk more about that as we move throughout the the half hour here this morning but You take a look at. This who is so good who has so much talent has has had so much success. He hasn't won since August of last year he had kind of been struggling to get back to the winner's circle in it finally happens in the Irish war cry this weekend. What's that mean for a trainer? I mean, just just for the the owners to have faith in the horse and myself you know to let us have the program and delay output the. Jersey season Most of if not all my clients you know we we love racing bomb park in the summertime and especially this year with Cova did and got knowing what our situation was gonna be and having everything pushed back for forty five, sixty days. I mean just their faith in sticking with the program as you know for him to do that really paid off for us and look forward to a big second half of the year for the whole stable. Really so. We'll pat let's go back to the beginning because this show we'll talk about your top horses, but this show is as much about your horses as it is about you. So take me back to the beginning where did PAT McBurney I fall in love with horse racing. I guess had moved from was born in Philadelphia and we moved from Pennsylvania down to Maryland and the fellow who ended up in a solo trainer. Himself was my best friend in booey Maryland and his father would take us out to the racetrack on Saturdays afternoons at Louis Race Course and You know we just kind of fell in love of course, racing mainly trying to hit the last try at that time but And after high school feel catch the last couple of races over Louis and. From there turned into weekend jobs and summer jobs and just..

"As well Steve Dot com yesterday watching with interest as some MHM cards came together for Saturday. We were already fully engulfed in Saturday's action at parks. We'll talk to asking later. We'll get some thoughts from him. Tony Black Course who's won himself a Pennsylvania Derby Nicotine in his outstanding five five thousand fifty two hundred win career. We'll talk to Tony and yeah we do. Actually Tony can also maybe lend some insight because because the siblings from the Richie Vega Barn Yeah Collegeville girl and her sister who has frankly wrinkly disappointed when we talked to Tony about her. That was this Phelps this got siblings on the card on Saturday I did. I did all the capping on on the park's Card and you know this really is. I think we say this every year. It just gets better and better and you judge it not just by the the the fields in the stakes. You got the three graded stakes. You've got the converted race that the last four years they've called the Pennsylvania Derby champion stake which was kind of fun little concept of a steak named in honor each year of the previous year's Pennsylvania Derby winner that wasn't a mile and a the sixteenth they've cut that back to a mile and they're calling the parks dirt mile but it's essentially it's essentially the same race that they were running the last four years under a different moniker the turf Amazon and then the two state breads the alphabet soup and the plum plum pretty and the alphabet soup is just that the better you better use all the all the vowels and constancy confined to spell out a win. I thought there was some really good pricing opportunities. He's the way this card is. GonNa Unfold. You know there's a few races obviously where you know the favorites notably Guarani and seren getty empress in the Castilian they they obviously Asli it comes down in a lot of ways that the two of them however you know they're Jaywalk Elefsina Morale Gist Street band little suggestion but a couple of these races the Gallon Bob. You've got the to California invaders door for with King Jack O'Neill woodland feels like they're the to the dirt mile feels like cold front Mananga Sheila. They're they're. They're your principles but there's there's three pick fours from race five on there's five six seven eight then there's eight nine ten eleven which is the big open company steaks and then there's ten eleven twelve thirteen and frankly the late double. I is I crossing crossing. I mean an allowance of six and a Half Furlong second level allowance. That's got eleven horses after the Derby Good Good Luck Midnight Charlie the price price wise. There's some crazy this crazy lines. I thought Midnight Charlie you know eight to one would was going to be the clear horse to beat and I printed the PS without morning winds and I was surprised to pull up the quick chief on d. r. with all the the odds and see the Ebonite Charlie was eight to one. I there's no way he's going off eight to one and then there's a seven furlong maiden special the closes out the card yeesh lay double very very tough and even if you even if you were narrow in the conciliate and the Pennsylvania Derby Abi and the Pennsylvania Derby the more you look. I can't wait to hear what has got to say and we'll talk to rejang. We'll talk to Tony I said yesterday Mr Money War of will and improbable obviously the the three heavyweights with the absence now of maximum security recovering from colic and displacing and the closer I looked spun to run is a serious horse horse and he is right in line now. Obviously he's gotTa face. You know these types of horses one more time the the Haskell the Haskell was Haskell. We say this all the time. The three year olds that come to hand in the middle part of the year they're always is discounted because we're so familiar with the triple crown season horses and the first person that identified this in my my memory was David's in vetting thoroughbreds. There's a there's a section late in the book about betting opportunities and that that always stuck with me the first time I read betting thoroughbreds that were so familiar with all those all the faces and names you know the war of wills and the improbable's etcetera and and it Mr money you know to just just a slight degree but there's a lot of people who feel that this is the big coming out party that that Mr Money is money in the bank this is obviously it would have been that much more intriguing and fun and exciting exciting with maximum security but the five principles afterward after this math wizard improbable war of will spun the run Mr Money Th th this is a that's a Nice Quintet Shanghai superfly. Just you just hope he breaks clean doesn't bounce off anybody and says drops out I it is. I don't think he would beat the fifty to one shot in the but I I don't know it's a very strange I I don't understand I know it's hard to say to one of your rank and file horsemen. Please tale your your owner. You know thanks but no thanks we were. We were going to refuse entry but it's it's a it's a it's a tricky. It's a tricky equation because there have been there have been moments where somebody said you know my horses doing great and in but Oh really really necessary to have this source in the middle of everything and and you know and the and the Philly and in the Italian the was wonderful and intriguing without didn't need an eleventh horse so anyway it it is a dynamite card the maiden races. I think I found a a fund maiden in the grass race in the third that then I know I'm GonNa WanNa bet we'll talk about tomorrow. When we're handicapping three maiden races start the card three maiden specials else to on the dirt one on the Earth and then a starter allowance and then all the stakes and that late pick that late double level of Second Level Allowance and a maiden special weight so compare this to Pennsylvania Derby cards in the past and and you'll see this this is probably the best one that has been fashioned edition? GotTa gotTa be impressed with the car they put together Laurel and at Laurel this has been an agglomeration of a AH to some degree of several cards and several late-season Maryland institutions like the Selima and and the Laurel thirty th Tony One Laurel futurity but he definitely WanNa Salima when it was a great one can't that Bald Eagle Derby which is new mile and and a half on the grass the Baltimore Washington international better known as DC international now a mile. We'll see what the PAT McBurney wants to do because he's got Golden Brown entered in a couple of different spots resented Philly as well in in that dirt mile the Francis Dash the great three these days and this came up this came up with a lot of the a lot of the usual suspects. We've been seeing on the sprint seen throughout the summer including the New York hard hitters like killybegs captain vote result. He hate me Steinhoff the Sagamore Algorithms gelding ending who's really had a nice year has been very carefully handled at just missed the ball resulting in the tail of the cat hat at Saratoga New York central coming out of the neighborhood but before that had won the Maryland Sprint of course the vast Merson the Windstar China Worse Club. SF Racing Group SF actually bread you might forget that bread New York Central and of course second last year in the pet day mile and then was gone for seven months and put a uh nice spring winter spring campaign together with that Maryland Sprint Victory Fergal Lynch gets the UH gets the call on them in here with Santana in Kentucky so or Z. Z. in Kentucky or is he he he's in Kentucky so wonderful light for Samantha Siegel who's really had Samantha Mathis at a very a good consistent year and has been active at the sale. I'll talk about the sale and a second the Laurel Dash it is crazy. I mean it just another deep card. you've also got the sensible lady turf dash you can't run you can't run stakes cards in Maryland without turf sprints and the weather vane which new to me the weathervane never years ago there was the Seafood Joint Saratoga the weathervane that they knocked down. They built that hotel about their over by the the now defunct driving range. You know I've noticed of late like driving ranges are like a thing of the past the the I I've seen a few that just seem like they've been abandoned in addition. You got the Dogwood Saturday at Churchill Confetti Getting Ready for the Breeders Cup actually for a listed steak at yet it it really drew nicely because you've got in addition to Kaffee you got is the council and champagne anyone calhoun sense free cover the lesson with bells the one and aw Vancouver take charge angel so nice nice little six Kinda quiet after last week kind of middling quiet mm-hmm Saturday at Churchill. Oh you've also got the you know the one race that I forgot all about that. I've got to pull up. What about the oaks? What about the CHARLESTOWN OAKS which frequently can be can be worth coding? Let's let's take a look the great three we'll we'll explore together because 'cause I actually at that. I kind of forgot about not not not intentionally but it happens casino focused on on the Philly trip for goodness sakes. Where is it fair? It is better boom Charlestown oaks here. We got rudy percent. Let Chancellor I stakes dry for the Ellen J foxwoods uncle that was three quarters of a million dollars plus an extra twenty five thousand for good measure Jose Ortiz Joel Rosario and Irish mischief back to interstates company Brad Cox and this was is the worst that that Marshall Benjamin one of the ones Irish Mr that he can strike is got Mike Peter Angelo involved with you've got Parisian diva local lovesick David David Fox coming up out of the newly minted Linda Rice Ecorse Nice win in the fleet Indian lady t and T for Joe Sharp for the Dilworth Fashion Faux Pas Delacour and company Taylor's Spirit Scott Gainer south south of France Todd Pletcher scat rattle and Roll Kelly Really Nice field could deal the three. Let's take a break come right back start to dig in on this Thursday at the raced races with Steve Vic on Sirius Xm radio hey what's going on.
