"But come on. Let me let me say this. Well it's okay. You're going to say this is the biggest margin we've ever had which is true and you might say it was surprising to me. It was not surprising. Sometimes we ask these questions and there's multiple reasonable answers. There is no other simple answer at this in this moment. Then crispier period. I mean is like it'd be like if we asked a candy coaches question. What's the best basketball program in the wctc. There's only one answer to that. Question is should be one hundred percent. And i would argue. This should have been one hundred percent crispy. I'm glad that although that would have been actually that would have been the best stories if we pulled you know. One hundred seven coaches and literally. All hundred seven voted for chris beard. He did get sixty one percent of the vote though and that was by far the best. shock a smart. I do how. 'bout this the old texas coach and the new texas coach were not just one and two they accounted for seventy eight percent of the vote and this does make sense logically. The top three vote-getters were the only candidates up for a vote who have been to the final four as a head. Coach beard shock a smart puerto mosier at oklahoma they comprised eighty six percent of the vote West miller and craig smith got three percent of peace. And then tommy. Lloyd hubert davis mike woodson ben johnson miles earl grant and pat kelsey vote. John also received a vote but he will apply to next year's poll question when he actually inherits the head. Coaching position there Real real quick. This is in the post. But i went back and looked at every coach that one this starting in twenty thirteen. Steve alford one at ucla. Coming out of new mexico re signed a ten year deal and left the school like an hour and a half later. I don't have the percentage. There i couldn't find it way back. Machine failed me Buzz williams virginia tech twenty nine percent in two thousand fourteen shock a smart texas forty one percent. The previous highest vote getter was the texas coach. The last time. Texas made a higher in two thousand sixteen. It was brad underwood at oklahoma state. With twenty five percent he was actually the lowest percentage of okita. We've ever had for this question. Archie miller in seventeen at indiana had thirty eight percent in two thousand eighteen chris. Mack thirty two percent and then in two thousand nineteen was fred hoiberg at thirty percent parish. When you look at that list of past winners. Alfred was fired. Buzz williams did good but he's no longer there. He moved on of his own volition. Shock a smart. It didn't end well although it was decently successful it just didn't end well. Brad underwood was a one and done to get a big job. He's no longer there. Archie miller fired no longer there. And then chris mack and fred hoiberg their recent hires and so they're still there but i would say both of those situations. I mean the the louisville situation with chris. Mack there in the middle of an ongoing quagmire with with stuff that predated max tenure and now includes max tenure where you had an assistant trying to extort you in hoiberg nebraska just hasn't caught on yet probably uncivil tournament team yet this season either so the point is there have been some successes but there is not one previous winner to this question. That is both at the school they were at when they want it and like continuing to be accessory there so if beer does it he'll be the first Granted it's only a seven year sample size gp. But i found that interesting. There hasn't been like the higher that like. Oh yeah he wanted. And when you look up like they've just been cruising enroll in either. The coach moved on or just kind of been or they've been fired. Yeah and that's why if we look back in five years it's possible that crispier will not have been the best hire from this off. We revisit these things i mean. It would have been crystal clear to me the year. That indiana hired archie. Miller that archie miller was the best hire turns out not so much right so you know we can look back on this stuff and have different opinions but in this moment. I don't think there's any answer other than chris beard. He's the most accomplished guy although his division one head coaching career is still relatively young. He's undeniably accomplished unprecedented things at two different schools. Unprecedented things in the state of texas. And now he's at the university of texas so on the david got hired. He was the right answer and everything's done since he got hired. He's he. He remade texas as roster into a roster that is that comprises a top. Preseason top five fifteen. You got a national championship in year one at texas. He took over a program that lost in the opening round the ncaa tournament to abilene christian. And he got a chance to win a national championship in year one so the day that he was hired. He seemed like the obvious answer to this question. And certainly as we sit here getting ready to start the two thousand twenty one twenty two season again. I just i don't listen. I i think shock is going to be terrific at marquette. I like a lot of these hires. But if you can only pick one. I don't know how you can mumble. Answer anything differently than grislier. I wouldn't disagree with you if you made me pick one. He just seems to make the most sense. A lot of coaches in the sport. Think that this is the ideal marriage and as long as chris. Beard wants to be a college basketball coach. he ain't leaving texas. This is the spot they gotta sparkly new arena coming next year. They killed it in the transfer portal. We'll see how that goes this year. If you really look at the players they got a bunch of guys that came from teams. That weren't good or didn't win. So i'm interested to see how they those players gel with the due to did come back but yeah he is. He's got it wrong. I did have a couple of coaches really supper. Shock smart and say The texas fit was not good. I kind of felt that by the second year. He's going to be able to have all this autonomy at marquette and you're going to look up and we're gonna look we're gonna be talking and four or five years and we're going to be seeing that marquette in that league in the big east is going to be the undisputed like top three program consistently kind of at the level that the buzz williams added that before that will That'll be interesting. But i wasn't surprised. I thought beard will be one in shock. Be too and that's indeed. How the voting came out one more question before we get out of here. It was presented this way with coach k. As mike chess game for those unfamiliar with coach k. Retiring who is the best person to replace him as the most prominent face and voice in college basketball and the leading vote-getter was j. right at thirty eight percent followed by tommaso. Twenty percent. john calipari twelve percent. Tony bit nine percent mark. Few six percent juwan howard. Five percent mick cronin. Three percent matt painter three percent and then various coaches accounted for the remaining four percent of the votes. This is one where just said what the other questions. There's only one right answer and it. Was chris beard. This is one where there's multiple right answers. Yes i thought you were about to say. I thought about say. There's only one right answer i was like. What no no you. You could make reasonably make an argument. I guess for pretty much. Everybody that the coaches voted for. But i think especially for jay wright and tony bennett tom. Izzo is obviously finished. Second and he's obviously a prominent face and voice in the sport has been for a long time and could certainly elevate in the absence of roy williams. Mike chef ski. But you know he. He's he's up there in age. I think jay and tony are going to be coaching longer in college basketball. Then thomas just gas. But i would guess that way. Based on nothing more than their birth certificates. Jay writes got multiple. National championships is well light. Well respected and multiple coaches pointed out. And i think this is true. Could be the next coach of usa basketball and twenty minutes. Same sort of deal national championship super respected. Well liked like all of these guys aren't well liked throughout the sport..
NCAA Tournament East Preview
"Welcome to coincide with greenberg dockage in the south bracket where the number one seed is. Bela number two seaters iowa states. Let's get right into it. John gallagher wild and i like john gallagher. Head coach at hartford neighborhood. Man the neighborhood who here west hartford the neighborhood as the ultimate philly guy. John gallagher is the ultimate dilly guy. I've already got the text from. I've spoken is tipped off banquet a year ago. The dude is certifiably insane in a good way. What he no one is going to enjoy the ncaa tournament more than it. So as soon as they won they immediately went to indianapolis and starts to quarantine and have experienced john. Enjoy it. we're gonna say nice things about you. You're a good guy. And ballard dance so nokes no trepidation about baylor's performance against oklahoma state. Oklahoma states really good people are losing their mind. What at at baylor games. They're playing in the big twelve. They're not planning west coast conference. You're playing in the big twelve. You're planning against other teams that have good players. You're gonna lose games all right. The next game is interesting. Opening round games wisconsin. Why i think he's just not right against north carolina who depending on the day is not right. I mean real simple carolina. You can take care of the ball. Are you gonna make your shot if you take care of the ball and at least get shots up. Then you have an advantage. Except that as we know wisconsin wisconsin's analytics over. Like if you just look at their analytics you would think they'd win every game. They don't give up second shots that will turn it over. They get pretty good shots but they don't play winning basketball. I know that sounds weird. But there's something not right. I think carolina find a way to win that game except the carolina. Jecklin hide reminds of this game. Would you like i like carolina. And this and i look whatever's happened to nate rivers whether it's kobe whether it's whatever it just hasn't been good. I expected more out of him. They don't run their stop nearly as well as they didn't pass they rely too much on one. And frankly they're not a one on one team. And you know what would those big garrison brooks bay. Come and all and bacon's and everybody else you can get into wisconsin. Guards make them drivers into traffic. I think this is a pretty good match up for north carolina. I just think they're better. And i think they're going to win the basketball game and i think they're going to win it fairly big. So if you wanna bet on a game this probably going to have tyke spread. That's gonna move it out a little bit. I think this is the game i think. North carolina wins by double digits. All right to winter is the sexy upset. eco nova plant without conquests. Be justin moore play the other day but wasn't good. They started the set a little bit. You know this is. This is a winter key. May play really fast. I've got a low post lower burns at play him about fifty minutes game. he's really productive. Obviously they got a very good camera. Badran the big six seven kind of point guard because they run the show through a tuck this about. They're extremely aggressive. Pat kelsey really likeable dude. Winter months play fast was gonna try to get into half court who you like. Well i i agree with everything you said. I think winter got a hell of a team. But if this was any other organization other than j j rights organization i would say the winthrop's gonna win the basketball game but you still have robinson hurl. You still have samuels. And if healthy justin moore. You've got three guys. You've got the best three guys on the court. And that always bodes. Well now the point guard situation okay. It is what it is. We all know that point guards at villanova stuff are important. It is the sexy. Pick the five twelve upset all that kind of stuff. But i'm not betting against jay wright and his organisation they just seem to overcome things that need to be overcome when they need to be overcome. I great i agree all right. So now this is an interesting north texas by gurus helmi north texas guards. The crap you absolutely flat can guard you an elite defensive team. They put great pressure notable they then eyeball reversal on play. Two man game with javon Handle it let the point guard and that they are really really good solid defensive team. They turn people over there really aggressive. But you've seen teams like that. Purdue doesn't beat themselves. You pretty has probably i i do. I think this is going to be right down to the wire south because what. I've talked to people today actually. Starting last night couple guys. I was surprised. North texas beat western kentucky. Not because i knew anything about no taxes. But because i saw western kentucky for three games and and they're really good athletic on the wing. Strong tough. I think what you said about the all of the defense bits. Dramatically bad against purdue get up into. They're not the quickest. Get shot team jay nineties really the only one that can i think this is going to be. I'm going to bet against purdue because i think produce offensive analytics put them in the top ten. But nobody's really pressured purdue nobody's really got into them and under wings. Don't take this game for granted. North texas is going to cover whatever the point spread is pretty wins. It the end. Are you got another big time. Texas tech utah state and utah state. Pounds that thing in pain name is cadence a big physical that play a four round. One run actually pretty good motion and so pretty good actions to me. The kid just being an interesting precedent. Don't shoot it as well as they happen to pass but they really defend the top five rebounding They're a very good offensive antiques. Keta against texas tech doesn't have a legitimate big tonight. I mean or cassette said

I want to take you back to last month, and I'm a big fan of the Bret Boone podcast. Brett was on the show and we talked about some of the fantastic guest he has had on, including the Hall of Famer Marty B. And last month, Marty Brennaman joined Bret Boone on the podcast. And talked about his view of the game today, based on the game that he grew to know as the voice of the raids beginning back in 1974. Here's Marty Brennaman on what he thinks of baseball today. Stolen basement something getting run meant something. Ah guys going out with the intention of pitching nine innings. That's something And that's the game that I was raised on and I, you know, I'm an old guy, and, um, I don't like the game as much today as I did when I came up. I like the speed game. I like an emphasis on speed. I like seeing guys aggressively running. The basis as opposed to basically a station to station game now, except for, uh, the Almighty three run home run. The game has changed a lot. From my perspective, It's not changed for the better. I know a lot of people disagree with that. I understand that I'm good for that. I enjoyed watching the game played the way it was supposed to be played..

And Katherine Nero actually had a story I'm going to use for this subject. Of things that you saw happen, and you did that just happen as it relates to football, whether it's college or pro or even a high school game. Katherine had a great story about Bo's. You believe this story about what? I'm still going to relate that later on? That was amazing. That was unbelievable. And that's probably I mean, I've read a lot about Bo Jackson. I've never heard that story, and she was probably one of 27 people had that were there to see it. But it was very cool tune into that. Yes, around 8 20 or so did that just happen Moments in in football, the NFL college football when I was on the field or off the field or in the stands, Whatever the case, who we get some good ones will start through him. Including my breakdown on the Reds off season and why it should be a rude awakening for Bengals Fair I Reds fans What is ahead this offseason? Alright, let's deal with the Bengals. Let's go back to Sunday, where I said it earlier in the week it was I'm not sure I want to take the time in the mental strain to prepare a list. It would be among the most difficult Bengals games to watch of my life is terrible. I mean, I I said this the other night. I thought I might fall asleep and at half time, I actually I looked at my phone. I said, Should I set my alarm and try to take a little nap and wake up? Well, I missed something. It was that brutal to watch when, after they look, kickoff returns are always exciting, right? But But that was literally the only thing that was exciting. Went to an entire game. There's not a list of fight, even four things coming out of it back up to a backup quarterback couldn't run the ball or unwilling to run the ball. Uh, yeah, Here's what struck me Rock and I talked about this earlier in the week with about five minutes to go there down by six. And I tweeted a poll question. I said 16 to 10 5 minutes to go. Bengals have the ball. Are you rooting for a game winning drive? 70 pronounce. Certainly a very scientific poll when you do it on Twitter, yes, but 70% said no. They were not rooting for a game winning drive, and I thought about it If you go back over the last three years, and I said, this is how the Bengals have warped and contorted what routing has become for their fans. Two years ago, Ah, lot of the fans began started rooting for Changing the coaching staff and Marvin to be gone. Last year, they began rooting for the number one pick and wanting job Earl this year it has now been reduced to rooting for is higher draft pick you get, so you take the best offense. If I'm in the country, that kid out of Oregon, that's how warped it has become the last three years for Bengals fans in parts of these seasons where routing has become, let's work on something that changes beyond the winning of the game. It's become the much bigger picture of this organization. Even screwed up. It needs help. Agreed, But at last, I think it's much more than I think it's it's more than just the Bangles fans. Okay, let's let's hope for another higher pick. That's so phat. Personally and just this is anecdotal. You just talk on people. I personally think people are mad that Jo bro got hurt. And then they in their mind seeing the Bangles are responsible for that, my dad. I was like, Yes. I cannot believe that work Now is there Is he all the way right? Or people? Is it all of it? But no, But I just I can just tell you I think people are mad. That job ER was, in their opinion allowed to get hurt. There's no question and I remember saying at the time there's in the immediate moment. Most fan base is almost all fan bases..

"Show from us every single day you got my word it's a really good first hour nice to have you here my name is Jim Rome the show is known as the jungle dance brought you by rocket mortgage by quicken loans rocket mortgage is with you every step the way to provide a seamless mortgage experience what a good first hour we have that Kelsey met that guy I because I went right into Raheem Moster who also I thought was unbelievable moments on impact callously Pat Kelsey was the right guy at the right time with the right message Winthrop head basketball coach I hope you heard that and in which case that by having a conversation with forty Niners running back Raheem Moster which was excellent coming up next segment we need information we need education we need to know exactly what we're dealing with so I will be joined by an epidemiologist Dr is selling calendar and that will be next segment in the meantime I do have time for your phone calls in fact I'm interesting your phone calls one eight hundred six three six eight six eight six we're dealing with something very unusual very disconcerting very scary it's not just in unprecedented time in sports it's an unprecedented time in our country so I'm here now I talk about this you have your phone number you can follow me on Twitter at Jim Rome and again you can email me directly at Rome R. O. immediate have tech dot com coming up next our noble Gallimore it info draft prospect a defensive tackle out of Oklahoma a game of the NFL draft up coming we will continue to talk to as many draft prospects as we possibly can I'm gonna give you some further further thoughts on some other events that are being shut down also I just noticed yesterday I kept saying so much is changing it's so fluid it's changing moment by moment and I also mentioned that literally on the walk back and forth from my office to the studio which is maybe a five second walk things are happening as example during that long break Jon Rothstein tweeted source the NC double lay has suspended recruiting for all sports both on and off campus until April fifteenth so that no just in the NC double a suspending recruiting for all sports both on and off campus in till April fifteenth right let's go to the phones and I've got more things get to some covert nineteen related and some not let's go to San Luis Obispo Shane nice to have you on the show Shane how are you do what you have are you around good good Hey I wanted to I would just want to appreciate the way you approach this whole thing and you know there there is a necessity to I guess some of the shutting down of sports and you know I at first I was kind of pissed off and get all salty about it but this morning we found out that my kids little league season we're going to be postponed and I just kinda want to put out the cones and say you take this time do something good with your kids can come out of the ball do something you've been wanting to do if there's something you're kind of waiting on doing it this is your time of year to sit down on the couch and watch sports do something different pick up a hobby if your kids out so in that does does my main thing I think that you know at first I was kind of irate and I got really irritated at the fact that you know what I'm gonna do I don't have a bracket and got this thing going on but alternatively I've got a little bit of free time I can spend some time with my wife I can take her out to dinner I can do these things I can be a family guy at a time where I'm what's that so L. N. RT with attendance today I missed the last couple days of the show unfortunately I was working hand in disease all get out but you know it it's good to see a positive I guess the positive alternatives to to what's going on so that you guys have any jump in response I appreciate that very much the right listen I'm not saying that this doesn't suck I'm not saying that you shouldn't be disappointed that we're losing all these things I'm not saying that it doesn't sock for everybody involved you know go back to my thoughts on the NC double a tournament this is one of the best things ever so the fact that they're shutting it down not postponing about canceling it and again there's that whole discussion mark few is pretty adamant about you know I'm a little disappointed in fact he's he was more than a little disappointed he was very disappointed that the decision to cancel was made instead of just tossing or postponing and mark few's argument and I could see where he would be number one is extremely competitive guy nobody cares a lot about his players and number three let's be honest he's got a damn good team and arguably the best look at a national championship is a lot of good teams really good teams but this is arguably his best look I could see where he be frustrated the fact of the matter is I would also argue that those who made the decision probably exhausted every possibility they didn't want to I mean they waited about as long as anybody has before determining in there probably a lot of reasons for that but one of the reasons probably was they were going to every possibility before deciding to pull the plug on it and not to postpone it but cancel it and the reason I would imagine they're canceling as opposed to postponing is logistically it's just impossible it's a nightmare doesn't work so back to your point that initially you were salty sure you could still be salty but I understand it's the right decision it's a no brainer it was inevitable they had to but it doesn't make it any easier for everybody involved they'll never have as good a look at it maybe I can almost say with certainty that date and will never have is get a look at it and what about all these players what about the seniors what about the small schools and the coaches the players they've never been in this situation might never be ever again it sucks for everybody but it's the right decision it's the right decision one eight hundred six three six eight six eight six I go back to the argument has been advanced by among others Geno Auriemma why not let the seniors come back and I had a conversation about Kelsey I'm not saying this is easy it's not easy at all there be a number of things you have to work to make that work but why not let those seniors come backing out one more year and they can be grad students and then you just expand the rosters you let the incoming freshmen still come in and you let the seniors have their shot it doesn't guarantee that everybody in the field will look exactly the same because it wouldn't but it gives everybody a shot once again so this time to port landing Terry in Portland nice to have a Terry how are you good yeah Jim I just want to say I don't want to go for Marty in the pick up truck with you but we've been together for Oklahoma City September eleventh the Iraq war financial crisis we're gonna get through this you always handle it appropriately you don't have to be too somber I know that there are people that are scared of insects and which also looks to help those that we can but you the contents king and I think you'd be able to totally appropriately we're gonna look back on this is a man that was weird but I think that we should figure out a way to get the sports to go on if they're still fails but so do the contacting didn't don't worry about it you're going to be five we're all going to be fine and safe for all that you do my man thank you very much have somebody pick up the needle on that record now that scratched up dusty record I appreciate it thank you Hey listen I understand I understand I'm not I'm trying to strike the right tone right this is serious this is extremely serious it's a global pandemic I am having an epidemiologist on next it's a serious issue but we will get through it like we do everything else in the meantime the way we get through that is not by putting our head in the sand and waiting for it to end its by being proactive it's by taking the necessary precautions it's about educating ourselves it's about listening to medical experts not even listening to me not on this topic anyway I know this it's about listening to those who do know those who are trained to know and help in doing the right thing and helping those around us around you your neighbors your family those who need it even if you yourself don't feel like you're in any kind of jeopardy even if you yourself don't feel like you're vulnerable great hopefully you're not over you don't get sick however there are others did you need that help you know in terms of content I'm giving content I'm pushing content we get it done believe me with or without the games with or without the match ups you're going to get premium content every single day on the show you know I'd be that guy but I'm looking for an opportunity and everything so maybe it's an opportunity for is it come back but they're going to come back and I'm not gonna sit here you have my word I'm still trying to figure out I don't have all the answers but you have my word I'm not gonna roll out here come "Shaver dot com it is I say that I think a Pat Kelsey who joined us earlier this week on the show he's taking was taking one trip back to the NC double a tournament for the second time in four years the the sense of excitement in the accomplishment of his family was going to be there and now there's a new place to be and it's just all part of what what we're now realizing it adjusting to this moments ago from the horizon league and honestly so much of this is happening I can't keep track and I don't remember what what I've met which ones I've mentioned and which ones I haven't and there may have been other schools I've missed at this point I know I haven't mentioned this statement from the horizon league loading now guided by its core value of student athlete well being and with further developments in the outbreak of covert nineteen the horizon league council decided on Thursday to immediately suspend all horizon league sponsored sports competition affected of tomorrow the horizon league will continue to monitor this very fluid situation will communicate information regarding any change about competition or travel at a later date so there you go there is a red said earlier in a statement and I have the complete statement on the blog it seven hundred WLW dot com I think you know a lot of wondering about their tickets from the Reds the Reds will work with season ticket members suite holders groups and single game ticket buyers regarding a credit for the affected games that could be used for the Reds twenty twenty regular season games.

fifty in Lawrenceburg from our family to yours for life find new roads it Kelsey Shelby dot com by the way the latest bracket update you're ready for this yeah this is a very fluid situation Giovanardi updates the bracket like every hour or so the last bracket he had based on some results this afternoon you see had moved to the first four our line first four out the last four in playing in Dayton Arizona state Xavier I you at northern Iowa northern Iowa is going to be a an interesting dynamic and how the committee handles Northern Ireland northern Iowa lost today as the number one seed in the valley to number eight seed Drake by nineteen for the first time in the Missouri valley tournament history a one seed was beaten by eight C. so northern I was how losing by nineteen they won by seventeen against them six days ago but northern I was twenty five and six so you know where I'm going with this somebody is going with it with the autumn in the conference tournament champion is going to determine from the valley does northern I will go as an at large order they get left out at the moment jewelery has northern Iowa playing in Dayton over the UC Bearcats keep an eye on that situation Giovanardi also has in his latest bracket number two Dayton taking on number fifteen right state all Dayton Dayton would stop it would just become too as a grinding standstill if that were to happen they have not played since what ninety seven I think it was a used at the gym Jim city jam Dayton and Wright state played I think eight times over the years from eighty eight to ninety seven but can you imagine if the NC double a tournament opening round is to see the Dayton versus fifteen seed Wright state whole baby hi USA today today has you see first four out they've got Xavier and nine they have UCLA is one of the last four in there can you imagine if Mick and UCLA wind up stealing a bid from Brandon and the Bearcats in NYC extends his streak to ten consecutive tournaments made I may have to go on vacation if that happens because I don't even think I can handle phone calls on that Mike decourcy as you see last four in at this moment Xavier any eleven saviors interesting and how they're viewed because USA today has him as a nine Joe Lunardi has him playing in Dayton and Mike has M. as in eleven that's all I got wide swat not completely white but that's a that's a obviously a difference in opinion how openly does the the committee look at the Xavier musketeers art rage when today eleven five the final score Wade Miley two and a third innings two hits four runs four walks a Homer his earned run average J. a crisp and evenly rounded seventeen point one eight he's getting his throwing in he's working on pitches that's the story at this moment I am sticking to "And Twitter. Atlanta McAllister, I would be honored if you would follow along the way shout out to Chris Mack. The former musketeer coach head coach a Louisville cardinals. He had knee replacement surgery four days ago. Now, Chris forty nine years old. I sold the photo of his leg. It looked like he had been run over by a car. I mean, I cleaned it up. It was it was a grotesque looking purple and yellow and the whole leg. I'm like my goodness. I sent him a text today. I said how you feel it. He said I four days good last forty eight hours miserable. But it's gonna get better. And I wished him the best but men me replacement surgery for Chris Mack of the age of forty nine. He tweeted today during the John Brennan press conference the following. He said I see coach. Brat. Coach Brandon congrats on your new position. You've confused the MAC girls to death, go bear. And then he added the sea and then dot dot dot dot dot. He said sorry can't do it. Go Brandon's go Bearcats, which is fantastic. Speaking of Xavier. I will excuse me. I will echo. What Steve Wolff said earlier. I think in terms of what N K U is looking for in a coach. I think the former musketeer Pat Kelsey would be fantastic. He has spent the last seven seasons at Winthrop took him to the NCWA tournament. He's one hundred thirty nine games eighty two losses. I say this because he fits their style. His style is was N K U style with John Brandon. It's fast paced, they shoot a lot of threes. It's at three point driven offense. They rebounded. They they lead the big south in scoring last year eighty four points game. They led the league in the country in three point field goals per game. They made twelve and a half threes per game. And they hit the most threes in college basketball last year. So that makes a smooth transition in terms of styles defensively, it's that pack lie defense known for toughness and grid on defense. He has he's recruited the last two big. South players of the year. He's recruited Winthrop's all time leading rebounder their all time leading shot blocker their all time leading score. He's got an international recruiting pipeline. I think he had three players from Australia on his team last year. He obviously played Xavier was an assistant at Xavier was an assistant Wake Forest spent time under skip Prosser, new Dino Gadio elder highschool under Joe Schoenfeld was was on that ninety three state championship team. And the thing I think would be would be perfect for in KU. I think even you would admit this. They could stay in to have their their students of energize support from the student body. Pat is very good at whether it's engagement with with the fan base and the students in social media and shooting videos, and he's constantly around campus. He created rock rock. The hill is located in rock hill, South Carolina. It created that homecourt advantage with their student body is driving force as they rocked the hill. And he shoots videos all the time walking around campus drumming up support. I think n que you, I think that would be an added element. It wasn't really John's thing not a criticism. But it wasn't really John's thing to be engaged from that standpoint. But I think if you're looking at similar offense of style to what in K was doing pats offense does that. And I think the added juice of that connection with the fan base in reaching out in saying, you know, be a part of this. I think it I agree with Steve Wolfe he called it a phenomenal higher. I would back that up with phenomenal as well for N Yuda to go at least talk with. Winthrop coach, Pat, Kelsey, go back to the phones. Five one three seven four nine seven thousand one in by the way, that Kelsey has has coached a number of NBA guys on that Wake Forest team where he was an assistant and crew guys. The Chris Paul's and the Josh Howard's and the the the James Johnson's and Jeff Teague and at others through the years, and it it's got that local connection. He knows this area. He's been away from it from seven for seven years as the head coach. But he certainly knows the area and grew up here. So go back to the box checker checks a lot of boxes back to the phones. Well, here let me get perspective here because he could I could tap into what took place over the weekend with our next caller. You see, Chris welcome. UC, Chris, Jim. Oh, Jim hang on. Just a second. I'm sorry. I punch the wrong button. There is you see Chris. Hey, lance. I'll tell you what. I'm definitely golf fan. You know, I play golf not a lot eight to ten times a year, but I watch every single term it, and I'll tell you what when I do out and play next. I'm definitely getting myself a pack of gum. Apparently that that's an antidote to keep you calm. Tell you what that was wild yesterday. You know that that twelvefold kind of when the craziness started that one hundred fifty eight yard yesterday and win. Both dumped him in the water. I was going to I was like what is going on here. I mean it, but he was so patient so calm. He just plotted around the golf course it what he had to do. But I'll tell you what that shot that he shot on sixteen Serie. My goodness. Did you thing was going in? Yes, I stood up. I was in my recliner in my office. I stood up when I'm yelling give the whole getting. I'm looking at myself thinking who am I what am I doing right now get in the hole and in the gallery and the number of people packed in the chance in in. He's just that line the CBS analyst used he hunted them down. Now, he's going for the kill. You could see that look at his eyes in that stride of confidence. He has you just since he's lurking, and he's about to strike, it was well it and all the competitor is on golf course knew exactly what was going on. They knew that. No one was rooting for them. Everybody reading red Nike curdle. You know, I it and I've been tiger fan forever. And you know, the good and bad. But yesterday was absolutely Ramar. It only at literally brought me to tears when he won that TV ratings. Yes. Off the charts at one point. I think it was one of every five people at a TV on. We're watching tiger. I think twenty one percent of the TV's that were on. We're watching tiger yesterday. Right at the end. Twenty eight share thinking about twenty eight percent of television in this country. Were tuned into that craziness in even the immediate replay of it got good ratings. Yeah. You see Chris. You know, this it had all the elements. I mean, there's cert there's obviously the Gulf the sporting element of it. But there's the drama of the comeback in the guy who had four back surgeries in his spine fused, and the the story of the the relationship gone bad in the divorce in scandals, and painkiller addictions in all that combines into one four eight period. Were that guy returns to the form of for the first time eleven years wins the masters? It was it was like a movie was fantastic. No. And I said Thursday when the first RAB my favorite obviously tournament a year. I said I said to somebody somebody say enough already with his golf, you really gonna sit here and watch this for four days. What I watch it for four days. I said, yeah, I'm not gonna miss for forty eight. And I rather watch. I would actually if you gave me a choice. I would rather watch the masters in the Super Bowl World Series for the national championship game that how much I love the master's, and then against lastly, you know, they rechange the majors layout. Yes. He is next five. Six sixteenth and nineteenth. Did you check out the odd? What are they girl? On the one eighth a one. I saw one of the Vegas guys today post a stat. If you think yesterday or the last four days where a fluke in the last three majors tiger has played three shots better than minded has played three shots better than anybody else in golf combined over the last three majors minus thirty two would Mullen airy was minus twenty nine then the PD I think DJ was. Yeah. Minus or a ten to one and Maccarone think can't remember twelve to one. Yeah. So that was a fantastic day, then masters probably one of the best masters ever that I've watched you, and I'm fifty three year old, man. So there you go. Thanks you. See chris. All right. You gotta land took care. Good. Good here for me. You you didn't have a heart. If you didn't feel the emotion when he wins. And let's out the scream in the fist go and the arms. Go up in the air. And in his his kids in his mom, and he's hugging them in in Charlie jumps up into his arms. And it was it was all the elements that bring us to two tiers of father son relationship, overcoming all the obstacles winning at the highest level winning historical event returning to glory eleven years left in the past all of that combined. It was it was dramatic stuff yesterday. Eight forty six man this this night has flown. In fact, I'm gonna tiger topic. I'm going to save till tomorrow night. Maybe in the seven o'clock hour. It's really good. And I don't have time to do it Justice. We'll do it tomorrow night. And we'll grab some more calls on John Brennan because everybody's still talking John Brennan, no problem with that whatsoever. Eight forty six sportstalk seven.

"There's there's nothing really stands out as far as tons of turnovers. Like there wasn't a swag or great shooting percentages like you have and Big Sky or summit league. But you know, it's a conference is pretty weak. You know, look at how they've done in the non conference their one hundred fifteen and one forty four ATS forty four point four percent since two thousand ten so this is certainly a week conference. And I would say that the big thing also is those teams in this league or not balanced. They're either offense. They're good on defense. The reason that Radford is clearly top team the week is because they have parents on offense and defense. When you look at Radford, of course, making it into the big dance last year wand up being a sixteen seed did lose in that round of sixty four by believe. Correct me if I'm wrong, they did with one of the plane games. So they were able to do actually didn't. Okay. So I mean, Mike Jones team, obviously, as you mentioned at the top of the heap here. And you know, what's so interesting about some of these teams is that you know, I remember Winthrop from several years ago. I mean, this is obviously changed but that used to be a team that would regularly play games in the fifties. I mean, they were one of these slowest if not these slowest teams in college basketball, and you get some of these new head coaches in their somebody's assistance for major programs and whatnot. And they wind up doing a complete overhaul of these programs both in terms of talent bit scheme tempo. And it takes a long time when you're somebody in the big south to really, you know, kind of find that that comfort zone in that consistency. Yeah. Yeah. I remember Winthrop had you know, this has been quite a while now. But when Gregg Marshall because it went through, you know, they they played pretty slowly. And they had Randy Peele. And then you go over to Pat Kelsey, but you know, they've been prop fifty intent though here the last she seasons. But like, you said, I mean, you can see some pretty big changes, and depending on here, the coaches, and what kind of roster they have, you know? I I always think best coaches adapt to to their talent. You know? I don't really like coach who says we're gonna play this way. No matter what like coaches to see what kind of talent, they have, you know, should we run into close things down because we have, you know, wheat guards and a good front court, and you know, adapt and play it that way. But I think the best coaches adapt to the players that they have, you know, I think this conference and the big south. You have quite a few team. Who are really weak on defense? I would say that this is more of an offense of conference if if you had to lean one way or the other, but you know, again, it's a week conference. And I wouldn't expect anybody here would have much of a chance other than Radford if they got into the big dance of of even scaring anybody. All right. So Radford clearly the top team for you. And then they knew a couple of very nice wins. This year beat Notre Dame beat Texas played a good non conference schedule. So I'm down from the highlanders. How do you look at the rest of the big south you stack? These teams up. Yeah. To grad for I obviously. And then Winthrop would be my second choice. I think they're really well coached. And you know, there's still Winthrop team that has been, you know, good for many years in a row here. I won't take Campbell third with the star. And Chris Clinton, I think he can carry them in a one game spot certainly their team capable of winning the conference tournament because they have him. And then after that, I would go Charleston. Southern Presbyterian Gardner, Webb Hampton, high point Longwood and would go down to the last two really bad last two USC upstate UNC ashville. This very week teams there at the bottom. So, you know, you get a couple of easier winds here in this conference because they certainly lacked..

"It's crazy the amount of cost savings that you really see. Once you start looking at numbers, and it also kind of proves that the price of education can come down because when these companies make deals the costume bachelor's degree from a four year institution is about thirty three thousand a year. And sometimes they can she this stuff to six thousand to ten thousand dollars. Yeah. And that's a huge piece of the story to you know, someone who's been writing about higher education and workforce development for a year and a half an hour. So it's become really clear that universities are struggling to to try to figure out what is their place in this new economy where the life span of skills is so short and the needs of employers are so high and especially industries like healthcare or impact that if they're able to broker a deal in which they're able to fill their classrooms up with a bunch of corporate employees and sell a bunch of degrees, essentially like at volume for a lower price. I think it still works out for a lot of them in their favor. One of the interesting numbers that she is through in your article was that of Taco Bell. And they had a pilot version of something like this, and it boosted their retention among participants to ninety eight percent, and that's crazy. Crazy. A lot of people think, oh, I don't wanna work at Taco Bell or something. But you know, you can move up into corporate structure, you can move up all over the place as you advance your education, and if the company themselves, they're footing the Bill, but they're keeping so many more people. I mean, that's a good benefit something. That's Bob Eiger side as well. But Disney CEO when we're chatting is that in the meantime, you know, even if those employees who did get a full ride to university of Denver or a number of the schools that they've partnered with and then they decide to up and leave as soon as they've gone enough of their credits. Paid for in the meantime, it does a lot of good in his, you know, in terms of employee engagement, just as sensitive like self confidence that they have all of these new avenues available to me in my future that perhaps they didn't in the Pat Kelsey G reporter for the Wall Street Journal. Thank you very much for joining us. Yeah. Thank you..

"I did. I did I went back there. I went to today was a private school locally for about four years. And then when Pat Kelsey left in a staff position on this staff opened up I interviewed and came aboard with him there, and they're not and then you work for buzzes. Well, why didn't why didn't it work with buzz because buzzes a super bright guy who was air force? And he's he's a very, well, regarded NBA assistant. I have my own kind of beliefs as the white in work. But you were there you were boots on the ground. Why didn't work for? Well, I think first of all when he the the year he came. I mean, I was on the staff before lucky enough to stay around. You know, we had a supposed to top twenty recruiting class that that really was not as good as projected and not some guys at characterize, maybe weren't the best fit and work ethic. Wise for the best fit, especially for coach Delic style. And so, you know, here's your one. You know, we win two weeks into practice. I came onto my wife said we'll be lucky to win ten games. And we want not you know, because I just knew we weren't talented enough. We didn't have the right fit. And so I think the first year are hurt really really bad because that class had so much hype. And then we struggled so much, and then you kind of have to start trying to recover from that with recruiting and he got better in your two. But by then there was so much negativity. I'm sure you remember a lot of the stuff that was going on it made it really really hard for us to do our jobs because of all the negativity. What's interesting about that? To me is you know, I know you I can't tell you. I know you like keep in touch every day. But I also know you as an incredibly positive person. And it's one thing to have that sort of negativity surrounding the program. Obviously, you know. Yeah. The death of skip. And then, you know, Dino, a lot of people around the program told me, the Dino wasn't given the right opportunity. You know, that that that that that was the best program was doing then you bring in a buzz and buzz can be buzz can be a little negative. What what's that like for you emotionally? Right. You got four kids this school, you love and a job that you you really want and a sport that you love. But all that negativity going to work. What's it like for you? Well, you know, it's hard. I mean, I it losing hard. Anyway, you look at it. I mean, losing, you know, I don't like losing checkers. Much less losing a lot of games at my alma mater. And I think we were really surprised that, you know, got let go, you know, I really felt like that maybe wasn't the time to do that. But that's not my, you know, I'm not the AD, and I'm not the person in charge. But you know, you know, 'cause you you been in it, and you're you got family who's been in how much. You know, effort and time and sweat and phone calls and how many hours go into college coaching. And so I did that for mama mater because at one because I love my alma mater to 'cause I love basketball and three because I like to win. And so when you know, you're losing it's it it's bad enough to lose his worst lose when you're at your mater play. She really loved. And then it takes the thoat takes toll. Okay. So so or you're my life for sure so. Yeah. So then then Danny comes in. And he doesn't retain you. Like, this is your al-matar. You're you're like, arguably, the greatest all around athlete in the history of your al-matar, you're nothing, but in loyal soldier like no one has ever ever had anything bad to say about you. You go home. You got four kids. Your wife. What are you? Remember about that experience? Well, I mean, it was crushing at the time. I mean, my wife actually, really Tonto writers the nice thing on that. I have online about how you know basketball, kind of become idle for us, and it was something that 'cause you have to it has to be, you know, at that level..

"Alan, it's a, it's a disaster area and Alan Robinson's getting enough target share in Jordan Howard, obviously because the running back. But you know the kind of the periphery there. The Anthony Miller's, the Tariq Owens Trubisky himself, Trubisky himself. Like if anyone's raw string him like think it's, you know, it's the defense in a couple of guys. And so I think the bears remain a work in progress ten more about the preseason because I find myself fixed TV's during the preseason. But then sometimes I'm like, what am I doing these games don't count. Yeah. And I think that's sort of this narrative that's out there somewhat is the preseason doesn't count. And then you think about what we learned this preseason and look the preseason does matter. The things we learned Christian McCaffrey was going to get a ton of usage like we saw it when he was in with the first team, right? He's now third in the NFL in touch with Sixty-eight. We talked about this Kenny golladay. We saw him, you know, playing a lot of snaps with the first team here. He's wide receiver twelve on the season. He's got more fantasy points than Julio Jones or d. Audrey Hopkins to just give a Cup. Of examples, right? We saw the connection, the case keenum Emmanuel Sanders has had and they were playing a lot more snaps with Sanders in the slot. Sanders nineteen of twenty two carpets season. He's obvious off to a very hot start Carlos Hyde. We thought there'd be a committee in Cleveland. And then once you saw the first team offense for Cleveland in the preseason, you're like, oh, it's going to be the Carlos Hyde show. And all he's done is over twenty one touches a game. He's got four touchdowns in three games and also Chris Carson. I think there was a lot of rookie running backs, right? There was a lot of hype after the draft about Rashaad penny about Ronald Jones and the preseason came in, you saw, Well, Chris Carr says the best running back on Seattle and it's not close. Now, penny had an injury throughout a lot of the preseason, so that may not be fair to him. But if you wash any Seattle first team offense, the preseason, we talked about all these story lines in the podcast, you knew Chris Carson. This is Chris Carson's job, and you also knew you wanted nothing to do with Ronald Jones in Tampa Bay. It's hard to find a team that can support three wide receivers. We may have two of them Matthew. That's the other thing is. I think there was this narrative coming into the season about like it's rare that a team can get have three fancy relevant, relevant wide receivers. And yet that's what we have in the Rams and secrets Detroit lion Comey about a matters. Yeah. Kurtz also Kurtz. Oh yeah, absolutely. Ninety eight percent of offense of snaps for the Rams season have had three or more wide receivers on the field. All three lines, wide receivers, rank among the top fifteen in routes, run this season. So you know, cooks woods and Cup golladay Jones and golden Tate. I mean, it's it's a, it's a pretty impressive thing. It's rare that you would say, hey, all three, all three are viable. And I think we're getting there with Sammy Watkins in terms of Pat Kelsey, tyreek hill, Sammy Watkins in Kansas City. One more good week at Watkins. It'd be like, yeah, you're starting them all every week..
