The Bad Crypto Podcast
A highlight from Crypto Kingpins: The War Between SBF and CZ
"It's been almost one year since FTX collapsed and created a horrific ripple effect in the crypto industry. Sam Bankman -Fried and Chengpeng Zhao have become key players in this incident, and a new podcast goes behind the scenes to tell about exactly what took place. With SBF's trial ramping up as we speak, we're pleased to welcome Tom Wright, one of the creators of the new Crypto Kingpins podcast to the show, to share some insights. So let's go ahead and get into it today on our episode number 697 of the Bad Crypto Podcast. Five, four, three, two, one, go. Who's bad? Well, what do you know? Once again, it's the Bad Crypto Podcast, the show for the crypto curious and crypto serious. We had a week off because I was traveling en France, and was Travis keynoting at a crypto event in Manila. He was the thriller in Manila. And how was it, Trev? I tell you what, you know, I think I maybe made a quote of this before. Somebody said, go where you're celebrated, not where you're tolerated. And I do think in Puerto Rico sometimes it's like, you know, the natives tolerate, they don't really like the gringos, but they tolerate them. And then there's some people that'll throw hate. So, but in the Philippines, oh my God, they are so open and welcome and kind. And like, hello, sir, how can I help you, sir? Like just most lovable people, probably that I've ever encountered in the world. Thailand, the same, very nice people. Not a lot of crime in these places. I think maybe the Buddhist nature of that. And they're like, oh, you know, and it was so nice, very nice. And the keynote was great. They had me kick off the whole conference. So the founder came up, Dr. Donald Lin, he came up, did a little thing. And boom, then they had me kick off the keynote. And I think it was one of the better ones that I've done. I think it'll be up on YouTube here shortly and we'll share the link when that comes available. I had a few people come up and tell me it was one of the best keynotes they've ever seen. So I was like, ah, you've not seen very many keynotes. Perfect answer. Well, I'm sure you did a fantastic job and represented the Republic of Bad Cryptopia. So, you know, it's hard to believe that it's been a year since the dominoes started falling. You know, Luna was first, then FTX and Three Arrows, and then Celsius. And it's just been, it's gonna be a bear market anyway, but boy, the downward pressure exerted by these, you know, horrible black swan incidents have made it a really, really bad bear market. And of course, we've been here with you guys throughout it all. We've not abandoned you. We've not turned into bears. It was like a kick to the ass, a nudge, an elbow to your face, and then a kick to the crotch. And here we are. And the bear markets can be - Here we are. Here we go, sweetie. It was fun, fun times. Crypto goes up, crypto goes down. Or as our next guest would say, number go up. You mentioned that book right there. So we're gonna have a great conversation here with maybe my long lost relative, Tom Wright, who's been doing, who's an investigative journalist, gonna talk about what happened with FTX and SBF and CZ. And he's got his own podcast around that, multiple topics or multiple episodes. So you're gonna want to tune in. This is a pretty good interview, Mr. Joel Kopp. I think so. Let's let the people decide as they listen now. Unless you're living under a rock, you have heard the names Sam Bankman -Fried and Chengpeng Zhao, or CZ, of Binance. And you've heard about the fall of FTX. Well, Sam Bankman -Fried's big trial for basically making off with countless billions of dollars is coming up shortly. Scam bank man fraud, right? That's the guy. We have a guy with us today who is the co -founder of Project Brazen, a journalism -focused content studio. He's a New York Times bestselling author and Pulitzer finalist. And his name is quite similar to Travis Wright's. His name is Tom Wright. We're talking, it's two T Wright's here today. There's two TWs here today. And Tom, welcome to the Bad Crypto Podcast. Thanks for having me on. Yeah, tell us, just kind of give us a little more meat on the bones of your background and how that led you to this new podcast called Crypto Kingpins. Well, I was at the Wall Street Journal for about 20 years, Dow Jones and the Wall Street Journal in 2019 after writing a book called Billion Dollar Whale, which is about the one MDB scandal. That's the scandal where a bunch of money was taken out of a sovereign wealth fund in Asia and used to make films like The Wolf of Wall Street and for all these guys to party on this fraudster Joe Lowe's tab. Clearly people like Paris Hilton and big actors, Leonardo DiCaprio and others. And then the guy who I wrote the book with, Bradley Hope and I quit the journal and set up this company Project Brazen. And what we do is we make podcasts and we also write magazine articles and other things, books as well, that we use as the basis for adaptation into TV and film. So that's Project Brazen, that's a business. And our latest podcast is Crypto Kingpins, which we've done in conjunction with USG Audio, which is Universal's audio. And that just started rolling out last week and the episodes are running weekly on Tuesdays. And it's about the huge rivalry between Changpeng Zhao, who you mentioned of Binance, and Sam Bankman -Fried of FTX and how that rivalry played out and how it led to the downfall of SPF. And we went based on exclusive access to CZ himself. There was some interesting stuff that was going down with that. A lot of personality clashes and then just like, oh, CZ is gonna come in and save the day. Oh no, he's not. Because it looked like he got some, he was feeling the heebie jeebies. He was looking at some stuff and going, whoa, we better get rid of all of my FTT because this ain't working. And so this is great. We're talking about some of the big crypto frauds, right? That's what you've done. You know, actually, since Joel and I have not done this show as regularly here in the last couple of weeks because of travel, a documentary just came out about Ruja Igniktova called The Crypto Queen on 2BTV and I was in there talking about that. So I'm featured on that. So it's like, it seems like there's a lot of stuff going on right now and I'll put that in the show notes if you guys wanna watch The Crypto Queen documentary. But this is fascinating. There's so many bad actors in crypto. Hopefully we can get past this and only the good people remain in crypto. The fraudsters are kicked out. Hopefully all the good people haven't left and are chasing dreams in AI now. So hopefully there's still some good foundations here in the crypto space. Well, we got into this podcast because I'm based here in Singapore and for a long time, CZ was based here. And what he was hoping to do was get a license from the Singapore government. I mean, a lot of people were here. Do Kwan of Terra Luna was here. Carl Davis was here. The Three Arrows guys were here. Their yacht Much Wow that they bought, I think was supposed to be in the marina here but never made it, as you said. A lot of people getting washed out of the system. But anyway, I got to know CZ because he was living down in this area called Sentosa Cove which is a lot like Miami. You know, it's big mansions with a marina. And at that time, now what a lot of people do know about is what happened last November, which you just alluded to, which is when CZ decided to sell his tokens and that caused a world of pain for Sam Bagman Frieden FTX, right? But what people don't really understand is the degree to which CZ and SPF had interacted over time. People know that the Binance was one of the big first investors in FTX back in the early days. They took a 25 million stake for 20 % of FTX. But Sam really looked up to CZ. Obviously CZ and Binance go back to 2017 and Sam didn't set up FTX until a couple years later. And we show in the podcast how CZ first met Sam when Sam invited him to this party in an aquarium in Singapore in 2019. And he was just a trader, one of many traders. I don't think he was a VIP trader, but just a trader nonetheless on Binance. And so that's really when the story begins and that's how we start the podcast by showing that relationship and how it evolves and then all of the stuff in between that initial meeting and then what happened last November, which was what we call the kill shot. So he kind of went from being a trader to becoming a traitor. We're gonna talk about some of that political stuff that he did down the road, which was really crazy. It's like you look at some of this stuff, Joel, and I go, man, anybody else was doing some of this stuff where they hadn't have donated so much money to the political parties? There's no way that you get taken out of a Bahamas prison and then immediately brought to America and then released on a first class flight to fly back home to go be with your mommy and daddy if you've done this amount of fraud. So there's so many different nuances to this story. I can't wait to get into this with you. Well, the most amazing thing about that is he was released on a $250 million bail, which was I think the biggest ever bail in American pretrial history. But was it really? It wasn't really like they didn't actually pay that. No, their house is not worth $250 million. I didn't quite understand that it was backed by their house, but that was the, I think they judged him a very low flight risk based on how recognizable he is. Yeah, did they think that house would be a collector's item someday or something? With a future value of this home, yeah, that's crazy. So do this for us. When everything went down, kind of set the stage for what happened that day when this story broke. How much money were we actually talking about? How many people were impacted? And just how far did the ripples extend? Well, I think it's November the 2nd is when this CoinDesk article comes out, which basically says, look, the Alameda, which was Sam's hedge fund, FTX's hedge fund, its financial situation isn't all that it looks like because somebody inside the company leaked these documents to CoinDesk. And they showed that they were heavily reliant on FTT tokens, which were basically a cryptocurrency that Sam had made up and bought himself to prop up the value. And then if you took those out, they were about almost a half of the total assets of the hedge fund. And so at that point, CZ is pacing in his penthouse in Dubai where he left Singapore where I got to know him and he moved to Dubai.

Podcast on celebrating the second anniversary for those who don't know about this. Podcast tech. Started this to help die professionals with various topics and techniques. But it's not just for dive professionals. I remember listening to the first episode. Way back in two thousand nineteen just before dima that year i've come to look forward to each weekly episode tech plans to keep the show going and has teed up a lot of great new content for the year year ahead. So i'd encourage you to check out the dive locker podcast. There's a lot of great information and perspective on things that hopefully will give you something to think about. Scuba shack is a proud patron of the dive locker. By the way tech also hosts a podcast titled the league of extraordinary divers. Where you can listen to some of the giants of our industry. Great job tech. Keep it coming now. I don't know what it is. But i seem to be a sucker for a message in a bottle story. So here's another one this time. The story involves a bottle that was washed up on the shores of the big island of hawaii. The bottle started his journey thirty seven years ago from japan and it was put in the water by school children. As part of an experiment in monitoring ocean currents the number of bottles were cast into the ocean in nineteen eighty-four from choshi highschool hawaii's about six thousand kilometers or four thousand three hundred miles from the launch point now. The bottle was found by abbie graham while her family was visiting a beach near hilo. It is estimated that about seven hundred and fifty of these bottles were tossed into the ocean between nineteen eighty four and nineteen eighty five. The last time one was found was in two thousand and two on kake. Jima island overall. The bottles have been found in seventeen. Different locations including okinawa the philippines china and even the west coast of the united states. I just get fascinated by these stories and often wonder just how many messages in bottles are out there in the ocean now. Last week we got an email from the clearly clearly came in resorts and it wasn't good. News clearly came in resorts include cobalt coast on grand cayman. Little came beach resort and cayman. Brac beach resort. The news informed us that the cayman borders will remain closed until two thousand twenty two. Now that's tough at a recent press conference to premier indicated that phase. Three of the original plan will start sometime. In february given the rise in cove in nineteen cases the resorts are now planning on opening on february. Fifth two thousand twenty two. Now this has been a really tough situation. If you remember way back in april i reported that the plan was to open in late april or early may two thousand and twenty one. It's been a long and difficult road for a lot of places. Surely the caymans are feeling abroad. We hope it gets resolved before october. Twenty twenty two trip yet. That on certain there's been a great deal of communication coming from tom. Ingram the president and ceo of dima the dive equipment marketing association regarding the two thousand twenty one show in las vegas. Tom unequivocal be states. That the show has absolutely no plans. Of cancelling now they did indicate that accordance with the local health mandates. Everyone will be required to wear a mask on the exhibit floor. There are several large past exhibitors. Who are forgoing the show this year causing some to question whether it should even take place. I know we've been getting a lot of surveys from our vendors as to whether we plan to go or not right now matt and i will be there. Tom indicated that it would be extremely difficult to cancel at this late date. Given the contracts that are in place and that if it were cancelled it would seriously impact demon's ability to put on these shows in the future. So we're looking forward to a successful show this year out in las vegas and finally today. I wanna talk about a piece of underwater camera gear that you might just want to consider. There was an article from sport diver magazine by john widow titled great camera accessories for underwater photography. It was a scuba lab review of the products that the staff took diving at alexander springs in central florida. First on the list was a sea life. Sport diver smartphone housing. Now that's pretty cool. I can remember my first. Underwater camera was sealife. Reef master with a whopping three mega pixels now. This housing will fit a number of iphones and android smartphones. The housing is bluetooth enabled and his rate it to one hundred and thirty feet. The sea life sport diver smartphone. Housing comes with a vacuum seal and duly alarms when you purchase the housing. You'll get a free app that will give you access to most of your phones. Usual camera functions also included is a red filter. And if that's not enough to housing allows you to put in those sealife life color changing moisture. Munchers he i remember those now. The housing isn't cheap. It retails for two hundred ninety nine dollars and ninety five cents. Us but if you wanna travel light and still get some great underwater shots of your adventures check out the c. Life sport diver smartphone housing at sea. Life fash cameras dot com. Well that's it for this edition of wet notes here on scuba shack radio.

Biden slips into political quicksand amid Haitian migrant buildup
"Starting off the show. Tonight we have a discussion about joe biden. Apparently he's doing more deportations than trump specifically deporting more asylum seekers than trump did well. Yeah we don't have the other categories of deportations as the numbers that That we came across. And it's a shocking number. I don't know the entire number. But i have here the us Moved over six thousand. Haitian asylum-seekers from the border at del rio so that's just haitian asylum-seekers just recently with you know the whip's did see that. Oh i saw that very scary stuff. There was ice agents. I guess they're ice. Sported patrol agents. Scroll on horseback whipping people catalyst. Yeah like cadillac. Wrangling them with whips and hitting them with the long whip. It looked incredibly frightening and in and scary to be in that situation with a bunch of armed men on horses attacking people who are just trying to escape the hellish life of living in haiti. And do you think the biden voters expected this to happen because the people on the left like biden love to position themselves as the friend of the immigrants they acted like trump was the worst for immigration and right immigration. I mean right. When joe biden got elected like somebody. I know got a deportation letter. Just and they're telling him oh. It's been a lot worse recently under biden. They told him that his friends sorry like his friends. That like is also a legal immigrant. Types may know some other people like that well according to the same place that you're looking here. It's says twitter account. Aj plus they're citing cnbc saying that biden is using what's called title forty two to expel asylum-seekers without a right to a hearing so you know what asylum is right. Yeah when you leave somewhere that is you're gonna die there or they're gonna put you in prison for the rest of your life or thereafter you for for whatever reason and the numbers here are just shocking. According to cnbc under trump and remember trump had four full years. And we're not even through year number one biden four hundred and forty th over four hundred. Forty thousand people were Were expelled under this title. Forty two during the trump administration and six hundred ninety thousand have been expelled under the biden administration under title forty two so that's a tremendous level of increase because if if biden is able to keep up the same amount over the next three years. Yeah he'd be like twenty four hundred weight. It was six hundred ninety thousand right now so yeah that'd be well over two million people well so you know that is just absolutely horrifying because these people if they are indeed being prosecuted or persecuted. They're going to be sent back to likely their deaths or likely to a prison cell. Yeah it's probably worse for you if you try to leave and then they find out about that absolutely it is. Let's see there's other story here from cnbc biden. Administration appeals judges order. This is from less than a week ago to stop. Expelling migrants under trump era pandemic policies. So there was a judge who said they need to stop using title forty. Two and biden is appealing so this is yet another example of how joe biden is more like trumpy than the trump haters thought. That trump was like people hated trump for all these different reasons and biden has continued trump's policies and crank them up. Yeah my friend. Sent me this weird video of biden today. It was him when he was younger. You know he. He's always been in government office. So i don't know what his title was at the time but he was being interviewed. Probably a senator or something. Yeah and he was saying he was saying. What do people think. I care more about bosnia than haiti because it's white people in bosnia and it's you know black people in haiti and then he just went on and said well if haiti sank into the ocean. I wouldn't care just like that was his answer to that was like what is that supposed to mean. Well i'll tell you clear what it means. It means he has no empathy right to say that about another an entire group of people living somewhere on the planet to say they just if they just all died one day he would have no concern whatsoever for that and you juxtapose that against what he says while he's running for office which is to make himself seem like this all caring. Oh the democrats we care about people that's clearly. Bs tel aviv From penn and teller thought he was going to heal us all with his love. Is that what taylor said. Y- you read that on the show. It was numbered teller's lider new saying let pendulum but tell her was going along with pen from what i could see. So presumably teller didn't disagree otherwise he wouldn't have been in the photo op. Yeah just mixed them up. Sorry according to the story here. Cnbc biden administration appealing. A judge's order to stop using a trump era pandemic policy that allows for the rapid expulsion of migrants without giving them a chance to apply for asylum. So they're using covert as the excuse. The departments for his just cove it. That's why we had to have horseback riders with the because of it. It's just you covered. The department of justice filed an appeal of district. Judge emmet sullivan's ruling thursday bars. The federal government from expelling migrants under the public health law known as title. Forty two sullivan. The ruling to go into effect in fourteen days the appeal is the latest move by the bided administration to address the twenty year high surge of migrants from mexico and central america crossing the border illegally which remains a political flashpoint between republicans and progressive democrats title forty two is first introduced by donald trump in march of twenty twenty over concerns about the corona virus pandemic. It gave the government the power to turn back any migrant caught crossing the border illegally regardless of their country of origin to supposedly stop cove nineteen. So if you had managed to escape from north korea and you made it to the united states which is no easy task. Mind you. it's one thing to get here from haiti or guatemala. Or duress or something. It's a whole other story to get here from north korea. But if he'd managed to and they caught. You did it cover. Nineteen you gotta go back to north korea and you back to north korea where you would certainly either be put into a hellish prison labor camp and then of course all your family members have probably already been put into a prison labor camp. Because that's what they that's how they roll over north korea. If you try to escape or you do something bad. They punish your whole family for it. So you know you're going to prison and it's going to be like the worst possible prison labor camp experience basically on the planet right now if they don't just go right ahead and just summarily execute you but this quote from a man at the border a haitian man with two children. He says the. Us government

"We have a very long history of lots of leaders being elected to lead their parties before they have a seat. And so you know particularly in in this moment in time when parliament is functioning in a very very different way. you know. there's a lot that i can do outside. Gives me more freedom to do this. I mean i'm guessing right now. Elizabeth and paul manley might be voting or speaking in some committee. So i get to do a lot more of this. I get to travel virtually and hopefully physically so i. I'm going to make the most of the opportunity. You know if i don't win the seat and that's a big if carried all right so we're into this cove in nineteen pandemic and into the wave and everybody's thinking in hoping and praying for the vaccine in faster testing results in we constantly. Tell our people to to wash your hands social distance. Don't have large gatherings because it is real it's amongst us but as we move past cove in nineteen the code nineteen pandemic and hopefully move out of the year and we have to start restarting rebuilding economy. And and now there's this role of building back better. And you know this is you. Can you know you can take that to the bank in terms of how i feel about it. It's something. I talked a lot about during the leadership race whenever there is an opportunity to make that connection that commitment that promise i did out of the thing that i want the most in terms of the green party this next chapter in the green. Party's life is to have a a indigenous leadership right at the center of every decision that were were making and so when terms of in terms of any future in in these territories it has to be led by indigenous leadership. It has to be guided by that. So yet right at the heart right at the heart of everything i completely completely in agreement with you. Our next phase has to be accelerating transition towards a green economy towards a net zero economy. The only way we can do that is hand in hand with indigenous leadership. Well we're gonna keep advocating for that for sure. You know me to as i say to people are elders always felt that we were stewards of the land and waters as in creator gave us that we always about rights but we also have responsibilities and so we have to make sure that we put that front and center so okay enemy with everything. "Day baseball coming up in about a half hour here on the big one, And I'm sure you know after covert. We've all been looking forward to this year's baseball season, granted limited attendance and then open and get back up as we close full attendance and, like, right Um, And last year there was like a big hole in our hearts because nobody loves baseball. More than Reds fans do and is far is doing that. But also following the team may be on the road, right. That's also part of the fun, too. There's road trips. There's food, their sights, culture, all sorts of cool stuff. The question is, Where do you go? And what do you do when you go in one of these parks? The answer is in baseball road trips. Timothy Malcolm's on the show on 700 Wlw Timmy's band before any updates. The cat does this every year. The complete got all the ballparks and beer and bites and sites nearby. Tim up for the show, are you I'm great. Thanks for having me. Yeah, Yeah, no problem s. Oh, yeah, It's interesting. You know, we've opened up past Cove it now people are traveling. Things look great. And you want to do a little bit of a road trip, but not every state. Certainly not. Every ballpark is consistent. You go to Reds game and you see how things are handled. Great American ballpark. You go on the road. Um, things are a little bit different there. How do you navigate those covert restrictions that still may be in place? Yeah, I think it's still very fluid right now. So there are two things you can do. Of course, one. We did write about that a little bit in the book about how baseball will be attempting to sort of dress covert over the idea and how it's very different from team to team. But I think what people need to do is kind of check with each team before they make their ticket plane and see what they're doing right because you'll have in some places like garlic in Texas, where they opened the gates for everybody on opening day, and there was a full house and that was a little bit shaky. For some people, the kind of consider and then there's other places like you know, New York, Philadelphia Some of the bigger cities in the East Coast where they were staying up, 25%. We're gonna keep very, very strict. A lot of these ballparks and opening up down to about 50% or so, so that's great news and hopefully by the end of summer, at least we should be hopefully, like 75%, or even more. So in baseball road trips you heard about the 30 cities? What about sense of what's about what's in there about us? Because he always it's like, you know, back in the day you get a phone book, you'd go and see if your name was in there like Steve Martin in the jerk or somebody's writing an article about you or your business. You want to buy newspaper get online and look at it. What's in there about us? What's the dirt? Well, I look great American Park a lot, and we have a couple of sites that I really like in the ballpark. One being the Hall of Fame and Museum. I think it's maybe one of the best Hall of Fame museum experiences you can have in baseball sometimes do have museums in the ballpark in the right. Have a great one, Um, talking about the Crossley terrorists, the riverboat, which I find really fun. One of the best little sex to look at in baseball, and I did a lot of talking about the student drinks in the park and around the park. The bank's area's been really built up really nicely, and that's great. But I wanted to make sure that all the fans were informed about what A Cincinnati style chili was about ways were about what was going to be with you all right, as MIA Cincinnati and you can wear you Am I live in Houston? Okay, Houston, I think you're a feeling from Philly to right. So you don't know trying to explain since he chili Oh, Philly Guy is like trying to teach a dog how to do a card trick. So you can you tell me describe Cincinnati Chili, the people who live in Cincinnati from outsiders here. So what I read the people was such that his style. Chili is actually more like spaghetti sauce. Um, and what you do is there's different ways that you can. You can kind of put that together on a dog. Right? So I think I might be getting this wrong like the first way is what, like like onions in the second wave, meeting onions or like I could be getting a wrong already. So cheese can I change? My Cheech is Cockney. So you got your ways You got onions you get well, you got cheese. You got onions You've got, of course. The chili on there. You've got beans on it goes on from there and that some places do okay. They get wacky and do like jalapenos. Yeah, well, I love lackeys. So just go with the three way you can't go. That's like the basic three weaponry. Well, there's no to where there's a three way. Um, some people, you know, if your little kid you bring your kids like I just want a plain hot dog. Okay, that's not a Cockney. Tony has cheese, and it has The Cincinnati still chilly on the hot dog in the bun and their little tiny hot dogs, too. They're like, Well, not almost like this. There looks like the slider of hot dogs. Let's go with that. Good. Maybe you could put down like 10 of those things. And I feel bad about it all. Or or maybe you could, anyway, So now I think you did a pretty good job. It's Yeah, it's interesting because you come here to go. Okay. Chili found a bull, so it's always served on top of Of long spaghetti noodles and then cheese on top, and there's your three way That's right. All right. So there you go. You're on you got you kind of got it there. Um, All right s o that Cincinnati. Let's let me just break this up. If I were gonna have a bachelor party, we're gonna board do a boy's trip somewhere. Where? What city would you pick on? Um, you know, it's hard to pick which bar is the one go to it? Wrigleyville, But I think there's a place called Jeez, that's really fun. And that makes a great, you know, Day weekend kind of trip because then there's the rest of Chicago. You can see. And of course, you feel White Sox game. If you do a A long weekend sort of thing. If you see one game on Thursday, and another on the Saturday that could work out, Um I also like San Diego. San Diego is a great destination because a weather beautiful 2035 degrees almost every day. You're downtown, the parking in a great position. The Gaslamp district there. And the bars and breweries around that ballpark. I mean, there's there's a ton of them. Some of the best beer you confined in all of America on ballpark has the great Grand Fair selection as well. So you could have Amazing weekend. San Diego. Okay, if you're going family friendly, other end of the spectrum. New family friendly. I really like Jeffords, just those oracle part because they have a lot of family friendly stuff there. Um, also, and I'll be a homer here for this one. But, yes, thank park. They just installed a new attraction of the outdoor called the Yard. "Well W 306 today. Rocky and Eddie all there'll be all kinds of hijinks, then It's the average American in for the Great American Great to have you with us. I'm sure you're aware of what's going on along our southern border. It is ah 1 80 from what the Trump administration did. For the last four years in a 3 60 back to where we were under President Obama. And whether you agree with what is happening right now, or disagree with it. There is no I think Disagreement on this. A lot of the people that are coming into this country are not being tested for covert 19. We are in the middle of a pandemic. And it seems as though There are thousands being released not knowing exactly what their health is. Not knowing exactly whether or not they're carrying the covert 19 virus. Todd Benjamin has been on my show before he is. Ah, very loaded man. He is a senior national security fellow at Center for Immigration Studies. He is the author. Of America's covert border war. America's covert border war. And he joins us here on 700. W well, w to talk about what's going on on the seven on the southern border. Really? I mean, Todd, Thank you for it really is. Ah, It really is a war Is it? Not? Yeah, well, I mean, right now, it's uh, lost by the Republicans at the moment, but yeah, there There is construction is ended on the wall. And there are big gaps that the smugglers have found and are using already a couple of issues that are going on here, and I want to talk about the practical one. For you. And for May And for everybody else in this country that is trying to get back to the life they had over a year ago. They're trying to get past Cove ID try to socialize, trying to get back to work in person trying to get their kids back in school. This surge of the southern border has created chaos. In fact, it's there are several people who are well familiar with this that have either worked in the Trump administration or our eyes and food of feet on the ground down there that are saying the sum of these immigrants that air coming over the border are not being tested for covert and being let loose in the United States not knowing one way or the other. Whether or not they're infected with this disease. How could this happen? Well, Ah, correct. Correct your sources on one thing. It's not some of them not being released without testing. All of them are being released without testing. Border Patrol simply has no procedure in place for that sort of thing. They only have enough time Tolo, line them up. Get their identity by a Metrix and give him a paper for their release on their own recognizance. At which point they move on to bus stations, get on Busses and head to the interior. That's happening bus after bus after bus right now on the Texas border. Which then moved north into Texas cities like Dallas or San Antonio, and then they transfer onto Intercon and enter a state Busses. Greyhounds that had other parts, and some of them are flying. So hopefully the ones that are flying or getting a Teesta temperature check. But there's certainly just boarding planes and if they don't have symptoms that they're traveling around, that's the way it is. Doesn't it seem to you? It would have been logical that if you're going to go ahead and do this, if you're going to reverse the policies that have been in effect for the last four years That you would factor in whether or not somebody has got Covad coming into this country. How we can't leave this country without getting tested. Well, all of our policy up of us since March. 2 about last were last couple of weeks. We're very concerned about Hope of it. I mean, that was what the emergency title 42 expulsion policy was all about. Anybody that came over was immediately returned to Mexico under 42. And for whatever reason, that just sort of went to this for the wayside. Nobody's doing it anymore and under starting on the day after the inauguration S o. You know, I've got no answer for you. It's almost there. So There's somebody had gotten into the driver seat over in the Biden administration. And just took off. Well, it seems like it's it's Maura ideology over reality. I mean, it just seems like and there will a lot of different things, factors and people that got Joe Biden elected president of the United States, not the least of which a strong number of people on his side particularly left of him that want this. But it's just shocking to me that OK if you're going, if you're if you're going to walk down that road, you gotta have all your bases covered. You just can't open up the floodgates and say, Come on in, but that's what it looks like. It's it's happening and you have firsthand knowledge of this right. You were You were along that border less than a month ago, wants you. Yeah, Just a couple of weeks ago, I was in warez, Mexico, interviewing migrants and in El Paso interviewing Border patrol on the other side. And at that point, and in that particular sector, they were still doing title 42. You could sense that there was a big build up of frustration on the Mexican side. Bet they weren't being let in right now. But actually in other parts of the Texas border, they were being by that and it was all under comfort. And secret and nobody was talking about it. I didn't even know about it till I got back and I'll tell you something else. There is a good body of reporting now. That when Border Patrol finds Migrants who are exhibiting symptoms of covert. They just take him to our hospitals. They're filling up our covert wards that, you know, I think we worked pretty hard to flatten the line to keep those beds empty for American citizens. It's amazing, so that's happening to it. SSM a zing, and it's Startling that it's happening, But I suppose anybody was paying attention during the summer and the spring of last year. Knew that something like this might be coming. I think we had 10 million people. Living in the U..

"And so will we grow faster than deck rose? Uh, we're gonna have to find ways to improve GDP growth or otherwise, the answer that I don't know whether the answer that will be yes or no otherwise. No, the you and all of your colleagues basically have said it's too early to talk about when you might taper QE, But I'm wondering how you assess the danger off. Inflating a bubble in financial markets, which is what a lot of people on Wall Street are talking about. Now on 120 billion, you're buying a month to keep markets functioning when markets are functioning just fine. Is there a point at which you think the danger of the markets bubble is bigger than the danger of pulling back just a little bit? Salute, baby. The way I make that trade off wall were in the teeth of this pandemic. On until it's clear we've whether the pandemic I think it's appropriate to be aggressive with our tools. However, once it's clear That we've that we've whether this pandemic and we're not out of the woods yet by a long shot, But once it's clear we whether the pandemic we put this pandemic and the effects of it in the rear view mirror, and we're making substantial progress toward our Toward full employment and price stability. I think we'd be far healthier to be weaning off these extraordinary measures. Uh, s O. That's the issue on, I think assumes it's clear we've gotten past Cove it which I don't know when that will be, I think would be far healthier to be weaning off these extraordinary measures. Well, speaking of questions about bubbles in the markets, your initial career was as an investment banker, and now we've got this SPAC Hypo mania going on. What do you think of that? Does that tell you something about where we are in financial markets or or this economic cycle? So I won't comment on any individual situation because there's a lot of factors that go to into any any one of them. But I would say broadly when you're when you're keeping rates zero, and you've committed to keep rates at zero for an extended period. You're buying 80 billion of Treasuries and 40 billion in mortgage backed securities. We should expect That that's going to have a material impact on liquidity, financial assets, and that's why I've said we be wise a soon as we're able to Uh, to wean off these extraordinary measures because these measures certainly have an impact on financial assets. And we'd be wise that the Fed to acknowledge it and and be very sensitive to and on on and I'm I'm very concerned. On Gua Ching. You know, access, risk taking and excesses imbalances, particularly in the non bank financial sector. The issue is what we're fighting this pandemic and until it's clear we're out of the woods. I think we've got to be aggressive. So the challenge will be after we It's clear we've weathered it we've got we've got to move away from these extraordinary measures, in my opinion, and I think we'll be far healthier for it. No, The Fed doesn't regulate equity trading except for your control over the margin rate. But what do you think of the sort of mim enthusiasm that's been going around? Does that worry you in terms of pot potential effect on the economy? So I again I won't comment on any individual situation. I don't at the moment, see systemic risk in these markets, But I do think You're seeing a nail speak broadly, not about the situation as but broadly you're seeing the effects as you'd expect of again. 80 billion of Treasuries and 40 billion in mortgage backed securities. I think it's necessary while we're fighting the pandemic, But again as after we get beyond it, I think we need to wean off some of these extraordinary measures. And I'm watching non bank financial markets very carefully and what I would call excess risk Taking what I mean by that, positioning that when When Volvo Allah till itty is relatively low and credit spreads or tied and liquidity is good look benign. But in hindsight, when you get a ball spike and credit spreads widen and volatility tends to drive up drop. You find people realize their over wrist. And they've got a D risk and they've got to do it quickly. We saw some of that in March. By the way on dime. I'm concerned that we should watch that carefully because there's there's always that's always something we are way need to be aware of it, and I am watching that carefully. Where we let you go. I gotta ask you quickly. You're our oil guy. How's the pandemic left the oil patch. And I know that President Biden's energy plans are somewhat controversial in your area. Have you modeled the effect of moving away from fossil fuels and the impact on your district? Yeah, we have and most participant in the industry of also model that and so you've got an industry that's far more consolidated. Uh on, do you seen a number of failures, Bankruptcies, consolidations. De leveraging, and I think that you've also seen an industry that is going to spend a lot more money on sequestration, carbon capture and reducing their greenhouse gas emissions footprint and also an industry that is committed now when they have excess cash flow to returning more of it to shareholders and less of it to drilling. So because of that, we think that supply Andre reduction in United States will be flat with 2020 this coming year on even though prices are moving up. People may be surprised that supply does not move up like they way they would have expected to in the past, So the challenge in United States is to keep a healthy oil and gas business, understanding that a smaller and smaller percentage of energy consumption Is going to go to fossil fuels and much more aggressive energy consumption, toe win solar other alternatives, and the challenge is gonna be to make that transition. Robert check in Dallas Fed President oil Patch Lier. Thank you very much for joining us this morning here on Bloomberg. Might make a great work as always. Tremendous. Thank you, sir. Two important issues at play here, Tom. One is the inflation outlook. A short term burst of inflation of many people anticipate when we re open, I burst of inflation. This fat is willing to look through on the right side of things. But whether debate will emerge, Tom a little bit more is on the asset purchase program when we see tomorrow inflation report tomorrow, goods inflation right up abrupt, the next to service sector inflation, which has come down down down. It is.

"You know, doing the things that we're doing. I'm confident we're going to continue to see That head in the right direction, and we are in big conversations with the state a zoo. You've heard the mayor reference around wanting to make sure that we can get our economy going in our restaurant open just soon as it's safe to do, so we're heading the right way. And I'm feeling good right now that that is something that we will be able to see again that that decision is being made separate from the vaccination decisions. I understand that but as considered I think we consider your opinion. Maybe more than we should consider mine or anybody else's Sam toy from the Restaurant association, said he'd like to see it be a single digit to open up the restaurants at 20% if the infection rate is a single digit for three straight days. I wonder how probably if the state or city were allowed to do that? How problematic do you think Or how safe do you think that would be? Um I have a lot of confidence in our restaurants. We saw that by and large with a few exceptions, they really took covert precautions Very seriously. There is no such thing as a non risk environment for covert and you do have to take your mask off to eat. So there are some special you know considerations in that setting, But if we can get our Positivity back down and is heading the right way. We are in support, You know of being able to move ahead with that A couple of our listeners said things like My daughter is 18. She's going out of town. Should she get the vaccine out of state or out of the area if she can Eyes. Vaccine is not available to people over 18 unless they are healthcare workers or as various areas are able to move ahead if they work in one of those essential worker categories. I want everybody to understand that we're trying to prioritize vaccine for the people who most need protection and the people that are going to get us past Cove it right, like as a city and as a country, and so On 18 year old daughter who's healthy enough to travel is not the most important person honestly to get vaccinated. I want to make sure that the people at highest risk of severe covert outcomes like hospitalization and death are vaccinated, and I want to make sure that the people who are at highest risk who every day have been coming to work in our grocery stories are manufacturing centers and our first responders are healthcare workers can get vaccinated and that that rules out across the city in an accident. Away. We need the whole city to get past coded and some of that is just recognizing that we don't have enough vaccine for everybody and these prioritization czar.
