"For 4000 years and still have I'll give you an example. This is a terrible example. So I did a lecture series on genesis. And I got a lot of it unpacked, but by no means all of it. When God kicks Adam and Eve out of the Garden of Eden, he puts cherubim with flaming swords at the gate, to stop human beings from reentering Paradise. And I thought, what the hell does that mean? Cherubim, and why do they have flaming swords? I don't get that. What is that exactly? And then I found out from Matthew paschel who wrote a great book on symbolism and genesis that cherubim are the supporting monsters of God. It's very complicated idea. And that they're partly a representation of that which is difficult to fit into conceptual systems. They've also got an angelic or demonic aspect, take your pick. Why do they have flaming swords while a sword is a symbol of judgment and and the separation of the wheat from the chaff use a sword to cut away to cut away and to carve and a flaming sword is not only that which carves its that which burns. And what is it carve away and burn? Well, you want to get into Paradise? It carves away everything about you that isn't perfect. And so what does that mean? Okay, well, here's part of what it means. This is a terrible thing. So you could say that the entire Christian narrative is embedded in that image. Why? Well, let's say that flaming swords are a symbol of death. That seems pretty obvious. Let's say further that they're a symbol of apocalypse and hell, that doesn't seem completely unreasonable. So here's an idea. Not only do you have to face death, you have to face death and hell, before you can get to Paradise, hellish judgment, and all that's embedded in that image, and a piece of art with an image like that has all that information in it. And it shines forth in some fundamental sense. It reaches into the back tendrils of your mind that levels you can't even comprehend and grips you. I mean, that's why people go to museums, and gaze at paintings, they don't understand, and that's why they'll pay what's the most expensive objects in the world. If it's not carbon fiber racing yachts, it's definitely classic paintings, right? It's high level technological implements. Or it's classic art. Why are those things so expensive? Why do we build temples to house the images? Even secular people go to museums. I'm secular. Well, our unit museum, yes, are you looking at art?

"Enter. Oh i would say definitely the biggest obstacle to really understanding your value and of knowing your cell phone you know gray and itself wife is ultimately that belief in yourself. So i people don't believe in themselves you know and i think i've missed touching this early up but your value is there. If he'd been to the way you believe like you know you can't really You can't really come across someone that has high value if deep down. You don't actually truly believe that you have that value on one thing units without Successful is that they know that body whether it be the value of their time or the value of their resources or the educational wherever for example. Take a doctor. Doctor has spent years and years in school. You dr matrix may treat you within. Maybe ten minutes twenty minutes. You may walk away thinking wait a minute that oxidant spend much time with me but think about the time that it took them to get to where they all so the amount of time you know the the knowledge that the exams. They have to do the the training. They have to get where they ought today. You're not paying for that doctor's Time got moment. You don't pay for that while you're paying for his time they put in for all these years and the amount of work and one trying to basically say with that is that unique. Stop in time to yourself so that you can ultimately osc for what you do what you deserve. Offer for what. You're worth really. Because i like when you when you defy chris on your grace and you really work on your breath even think about like like a house like you know. Sometimes you can see a house. That doesn't look the best but you know ultimately its potential united once again you see you know that this house even though it looks like a three hundred thousand dollar house you not gonna make it to a million dollar house. You know it. what do you do. you don't just all in you know. I'm just going to sell. This is follow up with you just saw. I'm just gonna just saw the hostile is. I'm sure summer wanted. No you do the work on the interior to make it look the way it needs to look that those stop wanted will ultimately see. It's you so. I'm basically trying to say. Is that just because we're talking about you know your wife. I always know you're west. They're not tax you know. Don't anybody Short change you always sokaia for yourself. Why just because we're talking about that doesn't mean we should neglect aspect of personal growth. Yes someone should accept you for who you are but ultimately you have to keep evolving on and you know you have to keep develop into your best fashion a few. That's why i would say yeah. "I think for the purpose of this discussion. Let's assume a person has never heard of. Dns has never heard of the prague school or any of these things can you in a somewhat succinct. But not terribly brief manner. Explain to people how all of this school of rehabilitation coalesced around this idea of what we call. Dns going back to the founding fathers of the prague school and what these various insights were that each of them had and how that sort of came together dns dynamic neuro muscular stabilization. Kind of built on some pioneers of functional rehabilitation. There's many that have been part of the prague school rehabilitation. But i think talking about the influence on the development of dynamic muscular stabilization by professor powell whole lodge who runs the rehabilitation department at prague school. At this time. I think we need to go back. Post world war two cold war era. Nine thousand nine hundred fifties his wear prague school rehabilitation was was really founded and it was founded as part of the medical faculty of charles university in prague czech republic or formerly czechoslovakia now czech republic and being post world war two cold war era so they were in eastern europe behind the wall. That may have been a factor for. They're not reliance but tendency towards the use of of observation in both diagnostic diagnosis but observation and palpitation for diagnosis and treatment. All three of these pioneers neurologist. And who are the three. Lot of miranda kerr levitt and ballclub woida professor janda. He had a keen sense of observation and he formulated concepts and principles that tied into pasta habituation specifically the tendency for specific musculature tend towards tightness and other musculature to tend towards weakness. And he he termed this upper cross and lower cross syndrome. So for example with an upper-crust syndrome meaning the neck and shoulder region with demands of life and tendency towards paschel habituation such as with sustained seated postures There is a tendency towards the muscles in the back of the neck the exceptional muscles the external cloud asteroid muscle which is the muscle that also attached to the skull in down to their sterner curricular joint the pec muscles the upper traps that musculature with ten towards a tight meaner over activation other musculature in the upper extremity the radius which attaches to the ribs in the back of the scapula the deep neck flex irs the middle and lower traps would have a tendency to tend towards the weakness and with that tendency towards over utilization or hyper tenacity and underutilization in addition weakness. That would also he also recognized that that would affect the quality of movement throughout the kinetic chain and subsequently would lead to overload in specific areas throughout that kinetic chain so that was a big contribution on his

A Decade of Dzud: Lessons From Mongolia's Deadly Winters

"So for people. Who Don't know I totally know where is Mongolia? Mongolia is in Central Asia right between Russia and China. The landscape to me looks a little bit like a mixture between Montana and Mars if you can picture that delightful so this this time last year before you were short waves reporter. You don't like to think about that time. You went to Mongolia it's true. Why would one go to Mongolian winter all the travel guides discourage discourage it? I might discourage it but I purposely went there then because winter is at the heart of this whole story. So how cold are we talking here. It's super cold. uh-huh freeze your nose. Harris cold I actually had to tape. Hand warmers all over my microphone so it wouldn't freeze. Wow it is cold. Oh I found this piece of tape tape of me complaining about it minus eighteen degrees right now. This is really cool. I could tell me what you say. Cool coach it wasn't acting but some types of winters are so extreme matty that they actually have an official name so in Mongolian. It's called a zoo would that's when a winter tur- is so bad. It kills significant number of livestock in Mongolia or one out of four people make their living hurting. That has huge consequences. I mattie Safai and I'm Emily Kouanga today in the show. We had to Mongolia to learn about the brutal winters known as and how these natural disasters have changed enjoyed countries way of life okay so Mongolia is periodically affected by this extreme weather event. That happens in the winter called. What does this look like? Yeah so tender standard. I wanted to meet someone directly impacted. Divide it this man named Roy Eaton Gacek. He's a father of four super good bad Santa could do prates daughter's hair getting get somebody for school and everything. He was born a herder in eastern Mongolia and in January. Two Thousand Oilman as he tells it woke up at sunrise to check on his animals. Snow had fallen in the night about a foot. They were writing out a bad winter storm and he was really worried about is heard so how he cracked the door of his gear. Those are these circular felt cover tents that herders living and it was eerily quiet outside blindingly finding Lee white from all this snow. What did you see when he opens the door? Do not with this new household off. He's Carcass Saas new. Shut us a dozen of his sheep. Goats had died in the night. Those still alive yet about one hundred animals at the time. We're trying to find grassy but the land was literally locked in by snow. The hotel does ndas and it was really difficult to see this. He Sang. It was horrifying and it happened. Every few days boyens animals would succumb to starvation. Illness exposure and by the end of the winter he essentially lost his entire heard the type of food that came to his doorstep. It's called Saga which Mongolian means white death. While I think a loss at this level I imagine it's not purely financial absolutely I mean this. This isn't the same but there are dairy farmers in my family and you kind of like build relationship with your cows you literally like have them from birth to death so I have imagine it would be devastating like on multiple levels if you just slowly lose them over time right. They're not just economic assets and the loss of those animals is a social loss. It's spiritual loss experts. I spoke to in Mongolia. Described as a slow onset natural disaster different from a rapid rapid onset natural disaster like a hurricane or earthquake. So how many other herders were affected by the white death that year that year the two thousand six it claimed claimed about three and a half million livestock. Wow quite a bit law. It's eleven percent of the national hurt. And when you consider that at the time one out of every two households made their living hurting. It's significant begin. Animals represent wealth. So it would be as if your life savings were too slowly disintegrate. So what did the herders actually do in response Some rebuilt their heard those who could but others who lost everything they left gave up hurting fled the countryside seeking jobs in in urban areas uprooting. Their lives are good hurting Dad Johansen hair braided guy. He was one of those who left. Almost your short could the mother oh well many migrated. He's saying because it was impossible to make a living and it shows in the population and barter that's Mongolia's capital it has has tripled in the past thirty years exploded. Zid is one of the many migration drivers bringing people to the city. And I could see this when I lived there. I was reporting reporting and living in his apartment building and I looked off my balcony window. The hills were just covered in Gares. Those felt covered tents that herders live in. It was a picture. Sure of all of these people who had moved to the city and settled there and the city. Just couldn't contain all the new arrivals or does it still happening as it. On this scale that hits every corner of the country not that common prior to two thousand had happened about once a decade but was weird about two thousand is. It happened the next year and the next year and again again in two thousand ten so by the end of the decade there were forces and twenty one million livestock died in that period it totally overwhelmed Mongolian people that government tens of thousands of families packed up and left. That's that is horrifying of what is going on. Like what is causing US okay. So it's tempting to blame climate change and that is in fact the biggest culprit in this whole affair. Mongolia is indeed a warmer drier. Replace than it was eight years ago. But what I found is that zoot is actually caused by cocktail of other factors like over-grazing and deforestation. Basically quickly anything that destroys. The grassland is bad for animals. You need that grassland lending food it's a goat's buffet table and to not have it sets them up for good because this summer is a time when they fatten up. And if the grass is gone from drought or other things they're even more vulnerable when the winter is bad. Oh little bit of science here yes. The drought okay. Means less grassland and in Mongolia less grassland creates even more drought vicious cycle. Yeah because Mongolia. It's land locked all right. So the vast majority of precipitation rain snow. It comes from the land it comes from the grass. Water is transpired by plants into the atmosphere so so without grass Mongolia is even drier so given all of this is hurting still considered a good way to make a living in Mongolia. I think Mongolians are trying to figure that out. There's fewer herders but they're better prepared and trying to manage the Paschel and more sustainably local communities training herders to brace for a bad winter. Do things like make extra. Hey for their animals to eat. Purchase Livestock Insurance and pool there resources so the individual costs aren't so high all right so that that sounds great but are herders still kind of on edge. Are they like Shariq. Dowd anticipating the next. You know so I used to report in Rural Alaska inefficient community and herders. They kind of remind me of fishermen they know they're at the mercy of the weather but they're very tough and resourceful within their own lives and herders are doing the same. They're trying to make the most of what they have. They're kind of cultural heroes for practicing this way of life. That's become increasingly less common in the state. Broadcaster actually gives these awards to the best herders in in the nation. Please tell me you went to a best herder award ceremony absolutely went to a buzzer award ceremony. The championship herder. Who I met in the province was this man named near Goo Davidoff and I talked to him right after he got his award? Lord of host was also he was practical. Nature is unpredictable. It's harder there's less rain. Animals can't get fat but if we prepare extra hey. We can overcome such natural disasters. We don't have to be afraid this spring their animal's gave birth to hundreds of babies. I went back to visit during the birthing season in March. This pen is just full like a hundred lambs. Just these tiny little cotton balls near to make us feel better about this. Do you mind no. I just don't appreciate being manipulated. I wanted to show you the opposite right so not death life and what it signals for the next generation of herders. Who are continuing to do this? I'm picking up what you're putting down on. Thank you all right. I'm Lequan thank you for bringing us the story.

Bond Girl Style, an inteview with Dr. Monica German

"Dr Drew Thank you so so much for joining us today. I have to say that I am a huge bond fan and a have been since I was a small child and I've seen all the movies more than once source super excited to see your book come out a few months ago. Congratulations thank you. Yeah but before we get to this bevy of beautiful women who have graced the bond John Franchise for more than seventy years now. I'm hoping that we can talk a little bit about the man behind the creation of the character of James Bond who was of course Ian Enflaming and he was quite personality in his own right. Am I correct. Absolutely to Ian Fleming was a Scottish man and no so many people realize that and then and bone these also a scotsman or half is called smitten anyway so many overlaps Fleming came came from an upper class background as bond climbing works in naval intelligence in the Second World War and so therefore he had that kind of background background in espionage on the secret services in the world of intelligence which excited him an interested in so a lot of the detail we found in the if we find in the novels is very much detail that came from slamming own experience director experience hope the world and the World Intelligence Fleming also was on various. He liked sports from his days at school. Due to these middle age he also enjoyed an defying things in life. Alcohol and Fine foods sounds simple foods but rich foods while and women plenty of them many affairs he was only married once but he had many affairs before jury and during the marriage it was sort of open marriage. I'm rather mia who then became enflamming. Of course it was also very interested in in experimenting in having relationships other than within Fleming. So so there's lots of overlap savage say between Ian Fleming James on that. I think that's also why people have been intrigued to find out about about the author behind the Noble Global Sin Short Stories. Yeah and I think that many of our listeners may not have known at the bond films were actually I based on the books and the he wrote thirteen books folks and also a handful of stories and in even as big a fan as I am. I didn't realize that Casino Royale was Fleming's very first book which was published in Nineteen. I'm fifty three. And of course it's most recent film on Carnation was the first of the bond series to star Daniel Craig back in two thousand twelve so your your book looks at Fleming's writings the books and the films. Several of these films like Casino Royale were adapted and produced decades AIDS after the books are written and many of the narratives in both books and the movies surrounding race and gender. Fill very problematic when we look at them today and this is something that you confront head on in your book like you do not shy away from this at all which was much appreciated. Might you give us a couple of examples of how some of the classic themes that we see in bond can be problematic today to contemporary audiences. Sure a mean first of all I also wanted to point out the Casino Royale was in fact I adopted in nineteen sixty seven and starred. They even this was not not a production by Company that's behind the bond franchise using independent company and really it doesn't count ended unobtainable Only takes teams loosely than the sense into a rather bizarre kind of plock. Let's just just for the sake of accuracy was casino royale before Daniel Craig's star in it yet but anyway going back to your question about gender and race you're Accident Erard said when you read the novels and when you see many of the particularly early Mondays you realize particularly with today's hindsight fight. I guess that's There are problematic relationships that are going on both in terms of race ending terms agenda. He when you look against the origins of bond in the nineteen fifties. This is a moment in time where Breton while Europe the world had been shaken up by the Second Second World War many changes had occurred in the social fabric particularly off Britain. The British empire was coming to a rapid end and The gender relations had been shaken up by the war as well because Women had been taking jobs. That had been laughed laughed at without men. Men were all the front. So women had to make the most difficult situation and as a result again to nineteen four- these women were out stronger in a stronger position than they were before the war so in the bombed novels and some of the earlier earlier films you do see tensions at work bond is a very conservative bigger. He represents a kind kind of masculinity that's in any way regressive already at the time of Fleming's writing it's a kind kind of masculinity that's still thinking of you know the kind of masculine heroism the would've been fueled by the world workers offers and I kinda masculinity that was still very much British upper-class and white now the the end of the war the end of the colonial venture the end of the Endel dot kind of masculinity so bond is very much the center of a world that doesn't exist anymore or a world is beginning to vanish. This strong women around him challenge is masculinity challenge gender roles through their emancipated behaviors and patterns of behavior that appear throughout novels and and the early films. Now Bunk reacts badly today's bond is to dominate women. Bolton's bonus patronizing to them Bondi's also condescending to people of color and they race relations in the books and the early films can also be rather difficult today. Just this in this day and age. Because there is a clear binary a position between bombs upper-class wind British ways and and the ways of the foreign villains the customs of the people he encounters and interact with when he's he's overseas so yes you're absolutely right. Gender and Rice are incredibly programmatic ended and the politics attached to them are difficult but nevertheless it's skewed because the nobles in the film's expose the problems that we can then discuss today right right and ultimately you you came away with this incredibly well formed argument that as you right. I'm going to quote you. Hear a scenario analysis of bond girls exposes their performance of femininity as an active challenge to sexist and racist ideologies rather than as passive victims of patriarchal imperial master's inscribed in their clothes are multiple patterns of disruption to the political foundation of bonds world. Wow Mad writer respect Monica that those who sentences pat quite the punch. But I'm hoping that you might. I establish some of the mainstream expectations of women. During Fleming's era in terms of femininity. So that that as we move on we can establish how this archetype of the bond girl really kind of stands in contrast of course so after the war women We Are we understand. Went back to SORTA fulfill they more traditional feminine roles that they had been performing before for the Second World War so there's different cycles during the twentieth century both worlds shaking up the gender roles that had. I've been in place before the war so after the nineteen forties in the nineteen fifties wage in regard. Thank you as a conservative day. Kids is they were women. Well go back to the kitchen. Go back to being homemakers family. Mothers wives Supporting their husbands in their missions. They rolled their professional careers and they're therefore even fashion. Of course you know that my book a is framed by the work of fashion as passionately. Scores Passion reflects this return to a more conservative traditional health.
