"So when we got back from Iraq, you know we participated in hundreds of operations of the Seal task unit. I led many, many operations, some of the major operations to go in. A Z are seals with a lead element on the ground. The first U. S troops on the ground into the worst enemy held neighborhoods, Um, ahead of sometimes 500 or 1000. Soldiers and Marines and 50 tanks and Thousands of vehicles, bringing in all kinds of equipment to build up these combat outpost and the bad guys neighborhood. That would be Parmalee manned by by U. S troops. And so I had intimate knowledge and understanding of the planning and execution of those because I had planned it and lead them. Those operations. And yet when we got back from deployment, and we were back in San Diego Jocko was asked to put together a brief to talk about what we done and Ramadi. What? How we participated in that battle there. He put together this brief that took a map of the city there was red over the areas that were completely controlled about Al Qaeda in Iraq on their insurgent allies. When we first got there and the silver tongue commander to put that in perspective, the silver to commander We're not first arrived on the ground in Iraq. I've been there for six months prior to me in Ramadi had said, Listen, he'd point of those areas on the map and said, Don't even go in there because That's how kind of battle space you're all going to get killed, and nobody could even come get you out. That's how bad it was. S so Of course, we're trying to figure out how we could get in there because that's where we could make a difference. But when Jocko took that map and had those areas that were totally red and U. S forces couldn't even get in there because they were belong to Al Qaeda and their insurgent allies. Then he started showing on the map. Well here here's the combat outpost with a blue circle. And now that's green around it because it goes from red to green because U. S forces are patrolling in all those areas And yet they're getting a lot of gunfights. And, yeah, Enemy forces Air id'ing vehicles on the road, But we're keeping those roads open and then you see another combat outpost another combat outpost and that those red areas start turning to green. Realized Just the kind of impact that we've had. Wow. I think we'd all like to leave the office. Um At any given point and feel like we made that kind of difference. The book is extreme ownership. It was just pure quiet dark and we just played acoustic on the deck for about fifty people as killer man stay the night there, and then went back to the battleship and play the show that as well. I, think that was probably the coolest experience man we've we've ever had. Oh yeah that's amazing. Wow. He's tonight on the boat. Yeah. Fads coming up forgettable. The coolest thing I think those. They were up there for an extended period of time for that ruined. Knew they had all been there longer than like six months I think instant You can't understand how hard everybody's working on a day to day basis unless you're actually there and you see what everybody does and. Everybody's so happy to have you there and they want to show you what they do. So we got to see all the missiles. It got see all the computers run everything we got to drive the boat. Just to. Golden. That's incredible. Me Hopefully get you back out on the road with everybody you know being able to crowd surf and stuff like that. Soon, man it's it's a outfielder I. Really Miss It. I. "It was. But anyway, we had an RV out back of the club the end of the night and Scott are on your vm burying Josh were in the close packing up. In, some dues we some news knocked on the door came in Bandannas. Wanted wondering cash and we didn't really have tasked with making you that night nobody thought we were. Big Fans are yeah Rv you know like a twenty twenty, thousand RV. But yet they had guns. They had guns pointed at me, my head demanding cash and Scott he's a concealed carrier. He was in the back of the RV and he always asked him for help, and so he came back in engaged they fired on a fired on US demand and money and Scott. He had his he had his hand gun with him in the the gunfight air RV five of us in a little lounge in a he got shot three times but he took he took out both guys. One guy's. Not here anymore guys in prison but scout shot three times and. Almost. DIED IT A. He hit us for more Ari. So he bled out luckily was that was a police officer like right beside the club at McDonalds. So he came was able to get the ambulance fast Buzz Scott went in and the doctor told us he said. I mean he he was just shaking sale like this. He's like most people with this injury have a five percent chance of living. Five percent so. He had to go in and he had like three lifesaving surgeries. He was in hospital for forty days in a coma for ten days he had Had to slices foot open on his calf to drain fluid. That's kick drum pedal. So is leg with working i. mean we went from dialysis not he's going to stay on dialysis resumes life as amputates. It was all his worst case scenario stuff not only that the other guys. That guy, he shot. was on the same floor. So it was almost like we had our people there and his people came up. It was just a mess. You know how? So luckily. Somehow. We pounded through it forty days later he came back to Came back home you still had open wounds we address it became nurses. He. We did double physical therapy to get him out of there like I. Mean we were a team in in In got home in the. Later we came back out to Nashville and. Nobody really knew how bad it was, but we were going to get that record deal, and so we did a showcase about four months later and the donor of broken boras like he's boys, acetate. Amazon you. So I mean. Is Crazy man and then It's like this man, it's up and down. It's always been up and down always gonNA be of now. But I think that made us that just locked the sand forever and we'd we'd been a band. That was two thousand ten. We had already been banned for ten years that point still and had a record deal still riding around doing clubs get shot into club. But, we had Nashville that was Kinda promising that look Nashville on the horizon we knew we had to get back out to Nashville because we could get a record deal if you get a record deal could change things. So, yeah I mean now the say that's ten years. That was ten years ago. It was crazy man. Flies by I mean just. In time when when so many musicians are are are really scared just about you know how are they gonNA. Make it with without being able to stuff I mean that's just for sharing that such an incredible story of. Perseverance and impressing on and and just following the music too and I think that's a good message to share times like this to that that you can endure and you can't survive. Absolutely man I think My Dad always told us he said we. What what do we do next? We never knew we didn't have any, but we didn't have anybody to say, well, this is the game plan. This is the map you should take. He's I just keep on plugging. Keep on. So. We just follow that motto I guess was going to say I. I noticed a new a new, not a face but a new figure and a lot of your press photos big blue. The trump. Yeah. We we used to. That's what we drove to work in every day we used to work with my dad and the logging woods trees, and that trump from the time we were. We actually took her very first. Show when we were like fourteen way. Yeah. That was that was the first that was our vehicle in every show we ever played with him in his band reloaded Aguirre. tobacco. That trump was always gig. So when he passed in two thousand six, we had a truck sitting here sitting here about couple of years ago he took it into the restoration shop in his being you know we we're GONNA get it back out on the roads we can counteract it again maybe take a show Oh. Yeah I was GonNa say you like it'd be like your big Lake grand arrival like. Past lack you got that. Maybe to see him as we'll tell you. Man Traffic. I mean not being able to perform right now I know has got to be so tough but but how are you staying connected? The fans have been watching the the piano sessions and those have been so great. Yeah actually we did. We played a couple of shows as we play. It was. Yeah. We did. We play some shows we We went and. You know everybody's distance. Everybody wears their masks when we load in every crew guy whereas mass when you load into other cruise wear. The head. Station off places for people to sit everybody good. Stayed Away was outdoors You know everybody kind of followed those social distancing rules and it went great. You know what I mean meet in. Greece can't really do meet and greets and just a little strange. You know when you get there, it's not the same. Carrara nobody can come up to the front of the stage, your body's way but the second show we played was the coolest we did A. A private show on a boat dock. WHOA. Overlooking the whole lake and was the fourth of July fireworks But that was really cool. To See I bet it was five hundred boats out front of us But you know you're rise in their own boat. We're on stage away from everybody It worked I. Think I think Thinkers Way to do shows venue in. No is not the same but still a way to do shows in body kind of follows the rules and does it correct drive-in both show I've never heard of that's a really cool idea. Douse, the best man and then the coolest part was. I would hop on a pontoon and in go seeing, go meander through the whole. L. Is the best bar. What's been the sounds like this one was up there. But what sort of the most incredible bizarre in the saying amazing show you've ever played like it was all different types of shore. On the on the Dick of the US battleship dewey in the middle of the Persian Gulf. Douse the coolest man we did a show for. The troops. Servicemembers out in in a in the middle of the like I said, the Persian Gulf they flew us from a helicopter from aircraft carrier. All the way to this battleship was out in the middle of water landed on it. And that was.

"But they pay they pay guarantees I love that they. Yeah. So they were they were they pay money because their restaurant and she had to play for hours and you had to play you know at least eighty percent covers. They didn't mind if you threw in a couple of your songs but we had a couple of songs that people started asking about shout video and it was exciting and so at one point I think we were like, Hey, do we want to? Really do this and everybody said Yeah. Let's go and we decided from that moment all we were GonNa do all our music and we're gonNA, not not really do much many covers, Zombie original ban and we went from making maybe six hundred dollars a night. Bringing your in play in three and four hours to make and maybe a hundred dollars a night, just hundred total or play for free to to play thirty minutes or an hour hour and a half of your own music. So we took that jump early on in the start department. When we started in we knew we wanted to do it. We just kept trying kept doing. It kept doing it kept doing. It rammed credit cards when somebody said, no, we said okay why and if they explain why we would try to fix that Y or somebody said, you should go work with this person that we thought my have a glimpse of a chance to get to the next level. We would go work with that person always try to find a positive light in any situation in chase that set of dwelling on the negative stuff. I think that's the key to. Or just being doing out. Of You. Or you're working with Nikki six for awhile for Motley crue. What was that like? I I had no idea about the recently it was also man killer We Round California working on music back in two, thousand, six, I think it's really coo-. The Likud part was he was in the middle of writing the heroin diaries. We said at the Mixing Board and he read his his actual written note of the night he died in came back and take all my that. The music scene in Nashville. So collaborative like how has just sort of being apart from everyone impacted your your processor making music it's been crazy. We've kind of got back together with our riders in I'm lucky our producers been staying with us pretty much the whole quarantine. So we've been fats to work in all stuff We're not being able to have that connection getting a room. You just have that energy in that the access to that. Every day is kind of a missing it, but the zoom rights have been going actually pretty good. I can't lie. I mean it's not bad I think everybody was scared at first I don't know about is, and then I think it's going good. You know. What is the typical writing day for? You? Look like you approach it almost like going to the office you sit down and get your guitar or the piano or I think it varies it's hard to say Now it's we're riding with the purpose the purpose of a follow up single for just the way album that kind of thing but I think it's it is like an office visit out here honestly which can get kind of boring after a while but you never know what might be a late night jam session it might be. An iphone idea come up and then you just run Qatar and you start working on it but generally everybody has an eleven o'clock writing appointment. He Goes Sidna ruin. What are you got? What do you got had this idea was that sound like or your are you have a ton of ideas you have guitar lakes out I mean it's just varies of you'd never know really what we're gonna now that really excited about how man I just I just did about four vocals on these songs we recorded back in December that I've been sitting around and waiting in. So we're really excited brand new songs for everybody and writing I gotta do a vocal this afternoon We're going down to deliver Tamara songs that all these songs kind of dinner little work tapes of Demos are kind of getting more. Into Song So. I. Didn't ask you about just the way it such a positive song which you know. Obviously, we definitely need more of that in times like this what was the genesis of that sort of loving the the imperfections of your of your partner? Yeah I. Think I think that message is so strong. It's just a everybody needs to know that they're loved just the way God made him. You know he's not you can't be perfect. You know when I heard that come up into writing room I was blown away when I heard that line you know everybody needs to hear this. Let's just go in a has been. Such a cool thing to see the positivity behind it people connecting with it and the tiktok videos in all the stuff going on man it's crazy and the music video to just everyone's reactions to giving him the flowers. Beautiful. Did they know sort of what was were? They left in advance of what was going to happen not really in neither were we we kinda were but. Some videos where I went out and gave flowers to random girl just out in public in that was. That was tough like. It off trust the back band it was it was really awesome to see the reaction. A for the ones who got it, but some of them didn't they they freaked out donaldson to sell him summer. But. That gesture was really cool. I saw it real person out in public handing random people flowers and it was really awesome. So they had the idea for the video, but they really didn't tell us didn't tell the girls nor us they were going to get you to handle the flour and so it was man I think it's It's very surprising to see people's reaction to that, and it's just a little gesture but it's really really cool. Oh really meaningful. How did how did Blanco Brown get involved? Well, we met Blanco a couple of years ago at the CNA awards I. Think it was he was talking to the president of our label and the president of the company. So I looked at him I said WHO is this guy? He's talking to the top two people at I. Record Label. I need to know this guy to meet him. He's injury looked interesting anyway. So. We basically just walked up to him very non said, Hey, what's up? Matt for partially. Who Are you? What do you do? You want to write? Basically just they the Stuart and so we exchanged numbers and I think about six months with by. In he came out to the house and we just hit it off like that became friends. I didn't even know what he did. I said what are you seeing what he say well, do this stuff called trailer trap. Let's hear it. So we set my living room, cranked it up loud and he just played this all these songs in animated saying as I I don't know what? This is but it's cool when I dig it in. This is GonNa catch people one tell you. So we wrote some songs and then about six months later he had to get up I'd never even heard it. This was way before get we're writing and they came out boom in. So we have been buzzed the whole time and this song we had just the way kind of into pocket. And just kept coming up we kept playing it on the bus and everybody loved just wasn't quite right. We like something missing the productions not quite like versions of it. and. Like man we need something in David Fanning our producer manager he said, why don't you go on so I called him up. We went to Atlanta two days later drove down there got a studio and he never sang it before that night the record here I send it to him but but our voices just missed so good and I could sing. But I don't think anybody else out here really hurting seeing unless they've been to a show of it was just a one of the things man just kind of fell from the sky how it all happened. I. Throw the balance comes from yeah scrape. It it's such a romantic song what you call your imperfections. I call beautiful I mean, that's just such. A sentiment of a true manic, which leads me to ask what's the most romantic thing you've ever done. Man Ago and. Let me think for people listening right now. I see his face to an very read right now I have to admit. I'm not too good in that department i. I think probably some some roses in the bedroom kind of thing. In. A couple of times I was GONNA say roses on the street is like is pretty damn romantic to. Say that. Oh Man. A lot of bands they described themselves like a family with but you know literally true in your case, your brother, your cousin, your best friend and you started playing music in your father's band. was there ever a moment for you when music didn't seem like it was going to be your future or did you know for my early on that? Like that was really what you going to be doing a new I wanted to do it. We didn't know how we didn't have anybody to show US anything about all we knew was start a ban. Start playing songs and somebody from a record. I was GONNA. Come Down Pluck you up and give you a record deal and it's GonNa be. All gravy after that you know. So nobody in my dad played in in like the local. Back Porch seen and local bars and stuff, and we played with him in that and he was really good and we we knew. That was as far as it went. I. Mean. We never really went out of town with him to play maybe an hour road once a month maybe play shows where but most we decided to be permanently we all made a pact together before reportedly recover banned for about a year and a half we were doing like the what we call menu venues where you you have a menu and.
