Boston - Harvard drops standardized test requirement for 2021

"Harvard University arguably our top school in the country academically anyway has decided at least for last year are for next year to drop the ACT and the SAT as part of its admissions requirements in my view it's the only non B. S. way of measuring student performance because letters of recommendation are completely subjective and fraught with politics and sore grades because the grades at a high school in St Louis may not be the same as the grades at a high school in Los Angeles for that matter the greats of the parkway school district could be completely different from the grades right in the Saint Louis city public school I mean we know that to be true but the ACT and the SAT however flawed is the kind of the same for everybody around the country okay Charlie and for clarification is this dropping of the ACT SAT by Harvard is this moving forward or is this a covert adjustment is it for this year because it's at least for this year they're gonna see where it goes now there is the cold that adjustment because the test taking has been out of whack however as you know standardized tests have been criticized for a long time because minority groups often but not all always fare more poorly on them I say often not always Latinos and African Americans trail whites but whites do trail Asians when it comes to the standardized testing right and that was the reason of the university of California system dropping the A. C. T. S. A. T. because they said that it it hurt some minority communities to me if you have nationwide minority communities struggling with the ACT SAT right that is the result of a broken educational system so instead of trying to erase the results of a broken education system fix the education system but what you're going to have that is students getting into the university of California school system and don't get me wrong people who know how to play the system can play the system ACT or SAT are not built figure out how to work the system to their advantage but those students who get in and have a compromise education that is not now exposed by the SAT SAT will find themselves in a university that they can't they can't keep up with that that they are foundational education is not there so then what do they do when those students start poor faring poorly in the school system do you lower the school system standards the university system standards well the equity income cook equity and inclusion are the big buzz words these days and there are important but it's not the only important thing as saw some have suggested Dr Marty Rochester and others you know merits important to merit any our I. T. and let's say you are at Los Alamos and you're trying to create a bomb that ends the war you have to go with the people who have demonstrated the greatest intellectual ability you can't say Hey let's get something let's get the rainbow you know it's it and that's also true if you're let's say you're looking for a surgeon you're not saying Hey I want my surgical team to be a rainbow you want the best working on you and there's nothing wrong with saying those who scored the highest deserve something because when we invite new products or when we're trying to find a new contraption or whatever the assignment is if if it requires great intellectual acuity you have to cope with the people who've demonstrated great intellectual acuity so to me we're throwing the baby out with the bath water a little bit here yes let's give everybody a shot but let's not forget that sometimes a test is a good predictor of your

"Camel acts I set it up before the break talking about how one issue and you just wouldn't think that it was a big issue but one issue that we're really dealing with on a regular basis now is this issue of parents harassing referees that high school and youth sporting events and and I as I set it up I had a meeting my my daughter is a parkway school district she plays on the field hockey team and we had to have an entire meeting dealing with telling parents don't harass don't punch don't scream and don't curse at the referees and the umpires in to me it was just I was dumbfounded that we have to have that kind of a conversation it's like having a conversation about putting on your seat belt should be natural you expected it's not something that you should have to be taught about and yet that's what we're dealing with in the area of referees so I wanted to have on this afternoon I've got two great gas we got Mike Ross who is the director of activities for the parkway school district my K. welcome to candle wax thank you for me so much I certainly appreciate it and we're also joined because I wanted to get a more of a tree top higher level view on this and I wanted to talk to Jason west who's with the Missouri state high school athletics association Jason welcome to candle wax. thank you for having me on I want to start with you my can again in the interest of full disclosure I mentioned I've I've got a daughter at parkway and I've graduated to others from parkway so we're proud parkway alarm and but we had this issue where we had to deal with you know talking about how what's the proper etiquette for parents in terms of dealing with referees and umpires and I found this from the USA today today and I want to get your perspective on it eighty percent of high school officials are quitting before the third year according to the national federation of state high school associations which launched a national recruitment effort last year to attract more officials Mike Ross is this really an issue well I tell you what it's getting a little bit more difficult to find officials that want to stick around so yeah it is certainly a little bit of a of an issue for us here in Saint Louis in the park with school district I'm actually glad to hear you mention about the conversation you had at your parent meeting at parkway west I believe you said I mean we we actually try to educate not only our student athletes but our our parents you know how we need to act and how we need to treat officials when they come on on to our into our athletic arenas because obviously we want them to have a positive experience we want them to come back and we can have our games are athletic contest the list we have official so it's important we talk about it we we make it you know make sure it's a it's a strong point that we talk about in a preseason meetings and you know we talk about sportsmanship with our student athletes are coaches on a regular basis in fact just next week in our suburban conference which were a member of we're having a sportsmanship week so basically in every high school contest we have whether it's tennis or back ball or soccer or what have you you know the official will select a student athlete who just shown great sportsmanship we want to reward them for doing that and we also want to make a presentation for the official so we're just trying to do any and everything we can to make. in a more positive experience at our high school events thank you a Jason I want to turn to you Jason west again who's with the Missouri state high school athletics association do you have any actual examples of where you're where students or rather where parents were acting inappropriately when it comes to referees are umpires. we we have unfortunately quite a few examples we we've had everything and basketball. last year in the Kansas city area had a a gentleman come out of the stands at a junior varsity level contest and literally attacking official and charges were filed and and pressed against that gentleman we we've had even in the Saint Louis area. parents we're going out to officials afri contests and under the guise of of asking questions and and assaulting officials so yeah and unfortunately we we do have some some examples of poor behavior or what we would consider poor behavior and and those are some of the things that they were looking at and in trying to recruit new officials and having things in place to to help the the younger officials deal with those different types of situations Jason west from a statewide perspective do you see this particular issue as being something that inhibits your ability to recruit new referees are umpires. Hey it it certainly is in one of the factors obviously we we every year we lose officials for various reasons they they may have taken a new job that doesn't allow them as much time as their their previous career did a survey they don't have as much time to officiate or they may be moving out of state and we we wish him that way but the the behavior on the sideline and in the stands is certainly one of the rationales that that we hear an awful lot and and hopefully we're working on both sides of that issue with coaches and officials on how to communicate with each other and you know how to ask a question and it's not that you're asking the question in many times it's how you're asking that question and and how you're answering that question and so working on on those type things where the coach and official relationship is not is not an adversarial one about one that those people communicating back together we're hoping about working on that relationship that that will have ripple effects and and people in the stands with and see how their coach communicates with the officials and how the officials have communicated back and and lesson that adversarial role and mindset and and make it more enjoyable experience for everyone Mike Ross again we're talking to Mike Ross and Jason west Mike you're with parkway school district what additional thoughts do you have in terms of how can we know lessen the impact of this situation that should be completely preventable but unfortunately isn't what else do you think that we can do from your perspective well we're just trying to do in in everything we can to be proactive to recruit officials you know the average ages officials is going up and it's not it's not decreasing so we're actively recruiting officials for all sports in a week we offer twenty three sports import. and parkway we're very proud of that but that's a lot of athletic contests we have over three thousand athletic events each year and parkway so we're we're constantly you know talking having conversations and the athletic directors world with our principles you know last year we had and officials recruitment night in parkway of so for whatever sport was whether it's baseball basketball lacrosse water were pull we're looking for good young officials or the problem though is you know you can grab a good young official but what you don't want to do is set them up for failure in other words you want to set them out or you know on a Friday night Marcy football game or at seven o'clock varsity basketball game you want to start them at a lower level you know freshman and JV which is great by the same time many of those athletic contests you know started for fifteen or four thirty so it's rather difficult at times with everyone's work schedule to get them there for early contest you know we certainly you know try to get young officials involved with those the YMCA or feeder leagues and you know there's there's many opportunities on Saturdays were to get some experience with with the younger age group together certainly you know we're look in hard to develop officials in all sports across across the board thank you Mike a last question like to go back to Jason west who's with the Missouri state high school athletics association Jason if we've got this problem with helicopter parents who are apparently verbally abusing and and trying to trying to harass influence on pliers and referees what impact would that have on our youth athletics if we cannot recruit enough umpires and referees. Wall alternately without officials we we can't play the game and we've we've had we we've seen some of that already in in some sports especially in the spring with baseball and and softball games going on the same time and and some in football this fall and in the past that a couple of seasons where there just aren't as many officials available for when games are are to be played in so either those times have changed where where the game Sir the game times have changed to accommodate the official schedule or they're just not played at all and they are made up at a later time or not made up but also eventually dad is is where we're headed if we are not able to recruit officials and they keep them in the game as long as we can very good Jason west who's with the Missouri state high school athletic association and Mike Roth director of activities for parkway school district thank you gentlemen for joining us this afternoon on camel axe bread thank you very much appreciate your time. Brad thank thanks for having us our pleasure and when we come back we're gonna take a break when we come back we've got more things to do this afternoon we got the audio because of the day we've got updates on traffic we've got news at the top of the hour lots of things going on don't touch that dial Brad young sitting in for mark we'll be right back. thanks Hey is this a flex and bank of America wants to know what would you like the power to do I'm speaking with Larry di Rita regional president from.

"It's a great idea. Some sports are very expensive to get into some are not as expensive like soccer. You you've got shin pads soccer ball in your pretty much good to go while uniforms. I guess if you're on a team or socks or whatever it is. Then you have something on the polar opposite, which is hockey. Think of all the equipment. You have to put on the skates, the pads the jerseys. The you know, whatever you wear helmets, the gloves all these things. Plus, then you have to pay for ice time. Some it's very difficult for some people in the sports, and there's also great organizations that teach sports to you through the summer like golf. I love the different nonprofits that teach golf to kids. So we had a celebrity come in town and give a big donation surprise gift micro was here from dirty jobs. How cool is that the owner of Saint Louis sports outreach? Billy may hall said some families are literally being priced out of their kids sports due to increasing team fees and rising prices for baseball, gloves soccer, balls footballs and golf clubs. So he and his volunteers been two days per week giving out used equipment to kids and families who can't afford it. And that grabbed the attention of micro in his show returning the favor. He heard about it. He came over. And he said, all right. We wanna help. So Rowe surprise may hall at a store in Saint Louis and asked him to attend a cardinals baseball game. But that wasn't the surprise. Not only were the cardinals pitchers annum Wainwright in blues Ford Vladimir Tarasenko at the game. They gave him a check at ten thousand dollars. But a waiting outside Bush stadiums a truck with thirty thousand dollars worth of athletic equipment ready to be used for young athletes in the Saint Louis area as a little plus little bonus. So the surprise gift so cool, so cool. Well, we're bringing that up and I love hearing things like that in the community. What about you get anything? Good you'd like to share three one four four three six seventy nine hundred or eight hundred nine to five eleven twenty. I saw this story posted on a colleagues Facebook page. It was a story of a journalist who met up with a woman here in Saint Louis. A former teacher now retired. She's part of the Parkway school district who had a song written about her. This is kind of a really cool story. Let me I'm gonna try. Share this without giving the name of the song in if you haven't heard this story before this'll be a surprise to you very popular famous song. So her name is Jill grew lick that name doesn't sound familiar. You may know of an incident that happened to her that had spurred a song a very popular song released in nineteen eighty. So it goes back to nineteen sixty five gel a freshman over an Illinois at the time met a classmate who ended up being a famous musician. They had similar classes, and they said there was an attraction there. He was absolutely playing music from the very beginning. While other couples were going to a show, they would go up to the grandview drive, which is scenic drive, or they just play music and talk a little different than the usual. Highschool relationship. It lasted on and off all through high school and into college in Jill attended western Illinois university while the musician went to university of Illinois. Jio moved to Chicago became a flight attendant the musician went to Colorado pursuing his musical career. Flash forward about ten years after college nineteen seventy five. Well, no, this is less than ten years after GIO was visiting her parents for the holidays, the musician was doing the same thing with his folks a few blocks away from there, they bumped into each other again, she said I went out for eggnog in he went out for whipped cream to make Irish coffees in the song pretty much describes it. He came up. Here we hugged and I did spill my purse all of that was true. And then we went to try to find a barn. Of course, it was Christmas Eve, so nothing was open. So we did buy a six pack. It's all true at the time. She didn't think anything about it. She just thought all catching up with the former boyfriend haven't seen in years. That's pretty fun. Very nice memory until one day in one thousand nine hundred eighty she was working for the airlines in Chicago. And she heard a song driving into work. She said, wow. That sounds like my former boyfriend that was that was her. I find that. Really sounds like, Dan. Then I began listening a little more closely thought, oh, what that is, Dan. And that really happened. He wrote a song about that one encounter. Dan fogelberg in nineteen eighty released this song. It becomes very popular this time of year when you listened to the Christmas music. Same old lane sign. Said when Jill and her husband moved to Saint Louis in nineteen Eighty-three. She continued to keep that song close to invest. She didn't tell people the song was about her. So when she moved to Saint Louis, she continued to keep this a secret, your husband, new, or whatever she worked in the Parkway school district. And there was a trivia night. Participants were asked to name the Parkway teacher who inspired the song. She said she was so nervous. She couldn't attend that night. She had to leave when they gave the answer even one of her close friends said that's not right. He said nobody knew she kept it that much of a secret. Nobody knew Dan fogelberg wrote a song about it. So apparently. She's in Saint Louis, Dan fogelberg coming to perform at the FOX theater Furner. Neighbors went to the concert and her neighbors, tried to get a note to Dan, and you know, the bouncers in.

And even know if I remember this, but the Princess bride was based on a novel and the guy who wrote that novel William Goldman passed away at the age of eighty seven, but I think people will know his name because not only did he write the Princess bride, but he won Oscars for writing all the president's men in Butch Cassidy the Sundance kid, William Goldman. Yeah. No kidding. Look that resume and talk about different types of movies. That's just one in debut at said you never saw right? We're dabbling. Absolutely and Kerry Ellis. Who was so good in that really never did anything else. Mandy patinkin. He's been. Great. In homeland. Yeah. Sure. Let me touch on Robert Wright pen, by the way. We carry up buttercup. Thank you, welcome. I was going to drive me. Crazy. I wanna touch on this Parkway story as a proud Parkway hall of fame member, and I'm in the Parkway district. I went to Parkway as well. So this did you see the stories we're covering vaguely heard it seems like it's one of these things that there's more to it. But for him is a guy who's a substitute teacher board meeting for the Parkway school district last night. And he he said he's taught for years at Parkway south as a substitute. He's making a claim that he's been banned from working there because he thinks students were saying the pledge of allegiance, and there was a student who complained so you have this video that went up there of his comments at the meeting has been shared a bunch of times the Parkway school. District says that the district would make a statement after they gather more information. I don't think there's been a new statement today. But here's what he says he says in late October. He was a substitute teacher for a freshman English class at Parkway south, and they make the daily announcements on the P A after the announcement students. Stand up say the pledge of allegiance. So I say all right. Let's go. This is Mr. Firkin saying this recite the pledge there are always two or three you don't stand up because it's not required. So at the end of the pledge, I said, thanks to all of you the participated in that I'm sure that all of those family members who lost loved ones. So that we can enjoy the freedoms we have today would appreciate the effort. So a student asked to go to the counselor's office. So he writes, the student of pass later a school administrator question for about what happened and told them that a student had been heard what was said after the pledge, and he says, I didn't mean it that way that was not my intent at all. And they said we'll get back to you. He says the next day after that he's no longer welcome in the building. And he makes the case last night. Now what I just said. To you. You don't know the tone of it. And you don't as far as I know there's not a recording of what he said in that class. I'm guessing that the snowflakes student was upset that he somehow was alienating him or her for not standing up for the pledge of allegiance. You is like I feel like it's snowflakes on both sides because oh if you don't if you don't want to do exactly the way, you know, I think you have to show your patriotism in the exact way, I think appropriate not necessarily. But you telling me that if the facts come out the same way that is that a fireball offense. Absolutely, not it's embarrassment on the part of the Parkway school district is there's not more back story. I think that both sides are being snowflakes, and I don't think anybody he will. No, that's all he did. Now. Again, I'm going to allow for maybe something else or tone was different. Or I don't know because you got to say that the kids who stood were more patriotic than the others. I mean, I don't know why you need. Why do you need to comment on that? Why? I mean, it is really why not. Well, I mean because I mean, you you I mean, you're he is not the arbiter of Paul said was thanks to all of you the participated. I'm sure that families who lost loved ones and you over there. You're disrespects over there and said, hey, Colin Kaepernick, thanks for not standing. Okay. Well, it was just right. One step around the people who die for this country. You know, you don't care about them. I mean, this is the difference between this is defined difference between the right and those of us who love America, and those of us who hate America like you, right? Whiplash propelled.
