If Bannon is able to get before this jury that he's now willing to comply, there might be some jurors who would say that they won't hold him in contempt. Who Was Marjory Stoneman Douglas?

"After the horrific parkland florida's school shooting in february of two thousand eighteen marjory stoneman douglas became a household name for all the wrong reasons but let's take a look today at the woman for whom the school was named marjory stoneman douglas undertook a legendary in dairy fifty year crusade to save the florida everglades born in minneapolis in eighteen ninety and educated at wellesley college in massachusetts douglas moved to south florida in nineteen fifteen fifteen after a brief and disastrous marriage to join her father who was editor and founder of the newspaper that would become the miami herald she was an accomplished journalist short story writer writer and an outspoken advocate for women's suffrage anti-poverty campaigns and ultimately because it would make her famous. The everglades douglas's nineteen forty seven owed into those wetlands. The everglades river of grass was published the same year that president harry s truman dedicated the everglades national park long before environmental scientists fully understood the fragility and interconnectedness of the everglades ecosystem douglas railed against efforts by the us army corps of engineers to drain divert parts of the sprawling wetlands to to make room for agricultural and urban development. These efforts continue today. The school was dedicated in nineteen ninety when douglas was one hundred years old and still going strong along with her book. Douglas provided a new way of understanding the one point five million acre wetlands preserve rather than seeing it as merely a sprawling swamp douglas rightly described the everglades massive slow moving river of shallow water draining north to south from lake okeechobee down through the sawgrass prairies and emptying into the florida florida bay in moving pros douglas road of the hundreds of species of birds fish and flora that thrived in the precariously balanced ecosystem of the everglades the largest subtropical wilderness in the united states. She rightly recognized that this area was largely responsible for the rainfall in south florida are book begins. There are no oh other everglades in the world they are. They've always been one of the unique regions of the earth remote. Never wholly known nothing anywhere else is like them a tireless and often intimidating advocate. She founded the organization friends of the everglades at age seventy nine to fight a proposed jet port in the middle of the wetlands lends. The airport plan was scrapped. Douglas spent the rest of her life. Defending the everglades jon rothschild edited her nineteen eighty-seven autobiography voice of the river described her in the book's introduction as she appeared at a public meeting in everglades city in nineteen seventy-three. Mrs douglas was half the size of her fellow. Speakers were huge dark glasses along with the huge floppy hat that made her look like scarlet o'hara's played by eager stravinsky when she spoke everybody's stop slapping mosquitoes and more or or less came to order. Her voice had sobering effect of a one room schoolmarm. 's the tone itself seemed tame. The rowdiest of the local stone crabbers plus the developers and the lawyers on both besides there are two seasons in the everglades. The dry winter and the monsoon summer and scientists now understand that seasonal fluctuations in water levels are key to maintaining the delicate equilibrium between competing plant and animal species but that balanced spend dangerously disturbed decades of habitat loss and short-sighted water-management tactics tactics. The river of grass is no longer a free flowing sheet of water but sliced up and boxed in by dams and dikes creating floods in some areas and drought in others congress passed the comprehensive everglades restoration plan back in the year two thousand but the funds to implement the plan never secured in the meantime lake shelby obi historically the water source that fed southward flow of the river of grass has become hopelessly polluted largely by agricultural runoff in two thousand sixteen high levels of phosphorus is a nitrogen in the lake caused a toxic algae bloom. "Mike Allen and our two of Saturday midday. This story came up this week and generate a lot of a former parkland Florida school resource officer who failed to confront a gunman went seventeen people were fatally shot in the Marjory, stoneman Douglas, high school was charged and arrested on multiple charges. I think seventeen it's actually eleven the main charges are child neglect, and perjury. But there's also a criminal negligence charge in there that school resource officer getting Scott Peterson he was charged with the breakdown is seven council neglect of a child. Three counts of culpable negligence. Then one count of perjury. If you add them all together, though, they carry a maximum sentence of ninety eight and a half years in prison. In essence, this school resource officer, former officer was charged because he stayed outside of the school building while the shooting take place, took place and a lot of people, especially the parents of the deceased kids. Boy, some of the things they said this week, I can't blame them. They've really take issue with his inaction in this case. But let me tell you this from a legal perspective. And I talked a couple of times this week about this from a legal perspective. It unprecedented in this country, least I've never heard of before that a police officer would be criminally charged for not taking action. You have civil suits about this kind of stuff all the time, and they're not unusual. But again, at least a my knowledge, it's the first time that criminal charges have ever been filed. And this has got a lot of people honked off, and in particular police union. Presidents one guy down there in Florida. I guess this is the union that former officer Peterson was a guy by the name of Jeff bell. He had several concerns about the charges particularly neglect charge that those are the big ones, and here's what he said, in order for there to be neglect. The individual must be a caretaker of the children does that mean that every police officer from now on that works detail where children are present are now subjected to criminal neglect charges. If something happens, that's what he said. He also went on to say that the union does not consider Peterson a coward here to talk about that is another prominent police union chief, I'm talking about our friend. Dan, Hill's president of queen's city, lodge, sixty nine Dan. Thanks for calling in this morning. Hey, mike. Thanks for bringing me in on this difficult topic. Yeah, yeah. Let me ask you, this you and I both at the F O P picnic this week. And I'll tell you. And like I said, I had commented on it. Before that a lot of copper's, X coppers talked to me about what I had to say, I, I looked at it from a completely clinical legal situation. But what's the average man and woman on the street? Police officer man and woman on the street saying about this. Well, this is something where opinions are all over the place. And, and quite frankly, it depends on what side of the bed, I get outta. What I'm yeah I think of it because, you know, I can step back and I can do the kind of clinical review that you are doing and, and to me, it seems like there could be a stretch there. I think there's also a lot of misunderstanding, especially when you talk about Cincinnati officers. Now, we are trained and how we were prepared and we try to put this guy through that, that you than, than, you know, I could see where there's even bigger issues. Dan? That's a good. That's a good point. Let me let me ask you. I mean, the what happened at fifth third Bank down there downtown, in the absolute incredible bravery of the CPA Diaw Sers that responded to that, they their training, kicked in and my right that you all train. Now ulcers are trained now to go to the source of the gunfire goat gunfire. I just trained in the other day despite my role as the president right now. You know administrative really for legal reasons. I'm not really supposed to get out and get involved in police work, but still just that chance if I'm out somewhere I, I have to continue my much training and I went to the target range day, and we train to go right to that source of fire that we try to do, this is smart as possible round the corner, so you can use cover and concealment, if need be, but you have to go towards the fire. And so even. As years have progressed and it Columbine was the big change, right? Columbine. If we saw sells tactically in a bad situation, we were trained and we waited for slot. Will they knew after they reviewed everything in Columbine that, while those of loud, bangs of gunfire were going on, while policemen were sitting outside in large numbers? So we're outside that, that meant every loud bang. Then another another child had died, another high schooler had had died. And we said, well, we can't do that anymore. So then we start we start responding with quad training where there was four of you and you, you each direction was leading down the lane, and easily usually shocked on the rifle, and then you'd have a rear cover inside cover, and so you'd have more trained or wait for four. And then we said, well, if you if this shots on the only way for one backup and then we've finally got to the point now where we said, this is this is why we are professionals. This is why we are trained. This is the time when you would have to risk all the save others. In something like an active shooter. You have to respond in even this by yourself, so that, and then we come in common sense, and say, all right. If, if I see the other police cars screaming down the street as I get there. Yeah. I wait for him. So we can do it together. So we're not gonna end up shooting each other, or so we can have a better approach, but do you wait? Fifteen seconds for backup. Yeah. Thirty seconds. Probably. Do you wait a minute. While there's shots going off inside probably not. You have to you have to take action, and that's the way we're trained, and Dan, I think you get in another question to that. And that's what I want to drill down on in situations. Like that does a prosecutor prosecuting authorities down down in Florida state attorney do they criminally charge a police officer if that police officer does not live up to his training standards. And this guy was an SRO school resource. Officer presumably had a lot of training. Do prosecutors, I guess, or should prosecutors criminally? Charge a police officer blatantly and flagrantly violate that. And I was getting that's where we're trained in Cincinnati. I have come to understand that maybe this guy had not received any of that training that he you know, he was kinda stuck in that SRO job or, you know, place there, a long time ago and hadn't been updated on the type of training. Maybe the department itself had progress to the point to where Cincinnati is. And, and he saw how, how beneficial was Cincinnati's kept up with the training, and the and the thoughts on training these active shooters, become more and more common the only way you can stop them is, is do that immediate charged towards them and, and meet them with deadly force. And so our folks responded, first and foremost like you said, Mike because they're Braves. They were they were sound believable. Most of our most of our folks are, but Secondly, I think that it just came into their nature because of the way they are trained and we got an outstanding academy stay up that trained in that way. So you know if we were the pick up that situation and put it here in Cincinnati. Do do I think it should be criminal. I'm gonna do what I don't do that. Maybe five ten percent of the time when I'm done. I'm gonna lie defense a bit because I just I'm not really sure I I my heart is with these parents. I. I can I can sense their frustration their anger their discussed that, that the performance of this officer on the other hand, we throw him in jail for ninety eight years courses that long. We throw somebody in jail or back to the civil responsibility is, is it something that should be handled in a another court obviously, he's been fired. He's been disgraced. He should be, you know, it appears that he live, because, you know, if you listen to radio broadcasts, he knew the building the shots were coming from and it up. But the union has to do with the union down there. They have to they have to defend its it's member. And I, I like I said here I am. I'm stuttering. Hey, hey, Dan. And I think a lot of people are in frankly. I mean I kind of am too, if you look at it, though, and I did this week because I was asked to do it the statue the, the big one that he's charged with the most counts, and it's a felony the statute in Florida believe unlike our statutes is very simple, and it revolves around a caregivers failure to make a reasonable effort to protect the child from the glac exploit neglect, or exploitation, by another person. So, okay. Any lawyering police auction, we'd go to the definition of caregiver. Well, here's the definition of caregiver in Florida. And I know you're not a lawyer. You got better sense than that, but hair giver, means a parent, adult household member, or listen to this or other person responsible for a child's welfare. So from a clinically purely clinically legal perspective. It sounds. Like that statute might apply by loco parentis just like yeah. Whatever. I see that. Yeah. And that's the thing. And that's why it's a political battle. And, you know, I've read comments from other union presidents this week. And they make the point that in and there's certainly some validity to this. I think there was so much pressure on that prosecutor down there to quote, do something unquote political pressure. And what, what worries me about it. And my sense is probably you and other police officers, and people who support police officers is the precedent that, that sets as if cops don't have enough to worry about these days. Do they now have to worry about being charged criminally when their second guessed and not every situation like this Dan hills? I think is going to be as crystal clear from a factual point of view. I recall the story and it's been long enough now. I'm not worried about what anybody thinks that are. But, you know, we're glencoe was it's changed now off of Auburn. I actually had a civilian writer. He was at this batch at the time and we, we got called for shot fired. I was on all avenue. And if they turned a corner, there was a gunman on one side of St. shooting gunman on the other side shoot at each other. And I said, this is a good place for us just yet. We didn't have any backup. I hit reverse and backed up back onto Auburn and just kinda watch round the corner until they stopped shooting at each other. It was probably don't dealer on dope dealer, many years ago. I remember now does that get treated differently than something where the child was I supposed to get in the middle of them to folks shooting match other? I obviously the answers absolutely not. Right. You know, and that's a really good example, where somebody could micro judge something like that. On because I can't nobody nobody in reasonable sense, would say that knowing the knowing the area known expected is going on there, and with people shooting each other, should, I necessarily any there to catch bullets that the savings, save both of them from shooting at each other that I don't think the responsibility of a police officer, but all we headed in that direction, where everything goes long are they going to say, well, the police officer should have sacrificed his life, right? That, that I can see union leaders point of view..

Just quiet reflections of people were standing in small groups or individually outside archery, Douglas high school. Some of them were trained others were looking at the flowers. They're chatting with each other than remembering the fourteenth students and staff members who were killed one year ago today. And we're seeing this somber anniversary, in fact, I guess some of the survivors there. Their families are saying don't call it an anniversary because that that has more of a happy connotation, but we we've been seeing in this one year today, the senators from Florida calling for more action to keep schools safe. And we're hearing as we mentioned at the top from the president as well. Yeah. Absolutely. Ground on that naturally after the shooting happened last year, some of the students parents teachers rallied the state legislature to the first gun legislation Florida has seen in decades. They're calling for more that during the next legislative session as well. Others though, Republicans are saying they want to see other measures, including people on campuses with weapons ready to respond. If a school shooter shows up, ABC's? Jim Ryan believe it there. Listen, you comic Louis C K made those comments in a stand up set earlier this month about the survivors of the parkland Florida school shooting earlier this year. Away. They're not going over well with some including parkland, survivor, allay Eastman. She tweeted to C k in part sent you like making fun of me and other parkland survivors behind closed doors. I'm right here. If you wanna talk Fred Gutenberg whose daughter was killed in the shooting. Call the joke's pathetic CK's only recently returned to this day age after a one-year absence following revelations of past sexual misconduct. Yeah. Which you're wrong. There were awful. Announce the jokes. I mean, we sit here and debate the jobs all day. The fact is is comedy is one of those things where we. We'd like people to push apples. We do. Right. We like people that push up. Well, we don't like that. Why? Because the kids. Yeah. Just because he is a jerk and horrible person when it comes to the way he treated women. Right. Doesn't mean that what he's saying in some way, shape or form is shadow you taking the solitaire decide I'm talking about the joke itself. I don't know if it went over. Well, what he was talking about the kids somehow magically that what they had to say is the most important thing. Hey, David Hogg. You're you know, you survive this. What do you think about climate change? Shah question, right. And here's the thing. He's at the point where he knows. I may not get back into the world that I once was right and Kevin Spacey. Who did this weird video the other day this weird like bazaar like I'm back here? I come and he is. You get to the point where you think. Well, I got nothing to lose. Right. And I talked to a couple of comic buddies. She would like. At that point, you're free to just kind of play with house money. Have I've got an audience. I didn't hear people not laughing at the joke. Right. I didn't hear ooh. You hear that? Because he figures. Screw right. Nobody wants to have anything to do with me in where I once. So what I'll do is I'll build an underground following. I'll make my living here. I've got a ton of money. Maybe someday people will like me again. Maybe they won't. And I'd read a bunch of articles just tearing apart. Those are the same people that are tearing apart who were also. Cheering him on for years. Before the whole thing came out for the stuff that he did before which I don't want to rehash. Right. I don't want to rehash. And I think he's at the point. Now, if he's like well, nobody's ever going to forgive me. So I'm just going to go out. And just say what I want to say this is the world I live in. I'm going to say what I want to say. And there you go. Comics do it right. Jessica does it. Does it Chris rock does they pushed the boundaries? And this the hatred. That's coming from this and the horrible nece. Well, yeah, you know, what we can debate. Whether or not it's you're making fun of of what took place. I don't think he's making fun of that at all. Like what he's saying is because you're in an incident like that as horrific as it is. Doesn't mean that somehow you came through the other side all of a sudden you like oh my God. I've got more wisdom than anybody else. Right. I mean the analogy this weekend. It's like if your great grandmother. Couldn't figure out you know. How go from horse and carriage to to riding around cars, and there was on the Titanic and she survived that doesn't mean that you should go to her and she should speak in front of congress. No. You survive something? It was horrific. It was horrible lesson should be learned from it. But but you look at this situation with what we did. And it's fun with these kids, they became extremely politically active. And I've told you this on numerous occasions, British Seville and people may hate me for this. And I'll say it. Many of them have enjoyed the fame ride that they've they've been on. Absolutely one hundred ten percent. Don't tell as horrible as that. Is they've enjoyed the notoriety. You can't tell me that some of them have enjoyed the notoriety. You can't tell me that. And I looked the egos. They're for some of these kids. Because they've had an opportunity where a horrific thing happened. And it's been almost a year. And all of a sudden now, they're famous. They're famous. If tomorrow you woke up, and you were famous for whatever reason. You might enjoy it. "Enthusiasts since nineteen thirty seven the range was nestled into the mountainside long before any school was built meanwhile two years ago the gun range says they improve the sound of bateman technology reducing the noise by fifty percents they shoot in one direction the schools are in the exact opposite direction but just after nationwide walkouts response to the parkland florida school shooting parents are worried about what would happen if an active shooter situation happened here nobody would know if it was the gun range or somebody coming into the school students i spoke with say the range noise would not affect their response to a gunman on campus that's komo's patrick quinn reporting a west seattle neighborhood is on romancing prowling around a home in broad daylight komo's tammy matassa has one family's warning jacek family knows there's a lot of construction in west seattle right now but no nancy non their surveillance camera dressed in a construction best wasn't at their house to do any work i haven't seen that move before i wouldn't be surprised if that's the play seen on camera prowling around the families yard and garage trying to open doors and windows but he's trying to open this up it's obviously locked and then he comes walking around here moments later mrs archana says she comes home interrupting his prow she sees him quickly run away as she pulls into the garage the family says they've tightened security by strategically placing cameras around their property and investing in an alarm system if anybody's heads like packages taken from their yard if you've had stuff stolen off your front porch it's very frustrating the you kind of feel violated little bit near the alaska junction police say they're seeing an increase in street robberies and thefts komo news time is nine eleven and the sports desk we go as the fourth seeded gonzaga bulldogs fortunate to escape with the first round win in the ncaa tournament yesterday in boise holding off number thirteen north carolina greensboro sixty eight sixty four guard satis nelson on the win every game he might be ugly might have changed turnovers may go for him but it means about winning losing marching today the best but the zags now face ohio state in the second round that's a four forty five tip off tomorrow from boise as the zags will try to continue toward another possible final four.

Mueller subpoenas Trump Organization - live updates

"Hey, I'm Alex Laughlin and here three stories you need to know about today. Special counsel, Robert Muller has subpoenaed the Trump organization for documents. Some relating to Russia, though President Trump has retained ownership of his businesses. While in the White House, his sons, John junior, and Eric run day to day operations for the company Trump has previously said that he'd consider any temps to look into his family's finances as going beyond the scope of the Russian best Gatien. This subpoena is the first time Muller's investigation has asked for documents specifically dealing with the Trump organizations businesses, the special counsel's investigation into Russian meddling with the two thousand sixteen election appears to be widening. So we'll see how this continues to shake out a company called backpack armor is claiming to sell bulletproof backpack inserts that are certified by the National Institute of Justice or an idea. The problem is certified bulletproof backpack inserts, literally do. Do not exist. The company was started by a man named Robert Shurmur horn, just nineties. After the parkland school shooting, he told BuzzFeed news quote, we figured it was a good idea for people who wanted extra security for their children because it can save lives. Shurmur hind claims. He sold about three thousand inserts in his first two days of operation. And that at times the company was spending fifteen thousand dollars a day on Facebook ads. Backpack armor is one of many companies that started selling civilian body, armor in the aftermath of the latest string of school shootings in the United States. Many of these companies claim certification through the NFL Jay, which is the Justice department agency that oversees body armor used by law enforcement. But in a statement and I J said, quote, marketing that claims NIJ testing or certification for such products is false. Still backpack armor insists that its backpack inserts have been tested and are in compliance with the agent. See standards even if they aren't certified y'all. It is a sad day. Toys R us is officially closing all of its eight hundred US stores and filing for bankruptcy. The closing could affect as many as thirty three thousand jobs according to the Washington Post. This marks a significant turning point for the toy industry. Both toy manufacturers and consumers will need to turn to other retailers like Amazon to both buy and sell toys toys R us did not immediately respond to a request for comment from BuzzFeed news, farewell childhood and really quickly. We have a correction. The nineteenth anniversary of the Columbine shooting is April. Twentieth two thousand eighteen and Wednesdays lockouts were time to the one month anniversary of the parkland. Florida school shooting are briefing yesterday misstated those facts for more on the latest stories, download the BuzzFeed news app, and you can listen to this briefing reporting to you as a podcast or on your smart speakers.
