From how stuff works dot com and from the desk of stuff. You missed in history class. It's the show where we explore the past one day at a time with a quick look at what happened today in history. Hello and welcome to the podcast. I'm tracy wilson in. It's january seventh. Famed contralto marian. Anderson became the first black performer to take the stage at the metropolitan opera on this day. In nineteen fifty five. She had been born in philadelphia. Her mother had been a schoolteacher. Her father delivered ice and coal and she and her two sisters were all very musically talented. But marian especially really stood out. Her church congregations started teaching her more about music at a very young age and at the age of fourteen she was moved from the children's choir at the union baptist. Church into the adult choir. She had a really astounding vocal range and she also had the ability to read the music and sing. Whatever part was needed right there in the moment her church congregation recognized that she had just astonishing musical abilities and they started a fund to pay for her to get private music lessons. She was able to find a number of voice instructors years including some who were so impressed with her talent. They agreed to teach her for free. But most of philadelphia's conservatories would not admit her because of her race at the age of seventeen. She won a contest to perform with the new york philharmonic symphony orchestra. That performance happened in august of nineteen twenty five. She made her european debut. Ten years later at the paris opera house by this point she was showing her range not just in terms of the notes that she could sing but also singing in different styles of music. Different languages singing everything from spirituals to classical music to folk songs all across the board and she was also really determined. She broke her ankle just before she was to debut at carnegie hall in new york and she did her entire performance standing on one leg bouncing herself against a piano using her dress to cover up the fact that she was in a cast that was in nineteen thirty five and a year later she became the first black person to perform at the white house in one thousand nine hundred thirty nine. One of the more dramatic events of her life took place. She was supposed to perform at constitution hall in washington. Dc but the daughters of the american revolution which owned the hall refused to allow her to do it. This was one of the more obvious. Instances of racism in her career. But it was not remotely the only one. While she was traveling around the united states she was routinely turned away from restaurants and hotels because of her race. Southern newspapers also shied away from calling her miss as they would call a white woman after the r. refused to let her perform at constitution hall. Eleanor roosevelt he. Had been the first lady. During that performance in the white house resigned her position at the dr publicly. A number of other prominent women publicly resigned as well. An outrage. In a marian. Anderson committee formed in response to all of this that committee and eleanor roosevelt. Worked together to arrange a concert at the lincoln memorial. Instead seventy five thousand people attended and one of the people who's reported to have heard this and the broadcast was martin luther king junior. He later cited it as an inspiration. Marian anderson continued to perform. She took the stage at the metropolitan opera on january. Seventh nineteen fifty five as i said at the top of the show. She had a standing ovation before she even began singing in her role in that night's performance which was the sorceress rica in the very opera ballot. Maschera she continued to perform. She continued to receive so many accolades including being awarded the presidential medal of freedom over the next ten years she published. Her autobiography called my lord. What a morning in one thousand nine hundred eighty seven and she became a u n goodwill ambassador the next year she also gave benefit concerts for civil rights organizations and sang at the march on washington for jobs and freedom. She retired after her last performance at carnegie hall in nineteen sixty five and she died on april eight th of nineteen ninety three. You can learn more about her in august first. I'll take the risk all get on a plane and go see my family for thanksgiving because that's important to me. I'll take the risk. I get sick. It'll be fine. The problem with that is that you don't have a choice if you're going to get sick or not and maybe you won't get sick but you don't have a choice as to who you'll in fact and we don't have a choice if they will die or their live. That's fianna tulip. A grieving daughter lost her mother to covid. "The bill house not i'm serious still running the show like she did the ballet corps at the paris opera house but no i don't think we'll i don't think will negatively affect anyone's memories of phantom the upper will only give you a new understanding of how these characters have grown and their relationships how the relationships between the characters have grown over the ten years that they lay dormant well it is and and i i was curious if this show and i know you you may not want to answer this question but i am curious about is this show back alive phantom well what would you mean back like it gives you sort of a different understanding of of the characters in oh you know what i like having spent so much time with phantom of the opera on broadway and now diving into visceral every single thing that we present on the stage is completely understandable to these characters so i i think it's really it is a sequel in that but because we know the characters and we know what happened in phantom one as we call it but it's really a continuation of their lives if we stepped away for ten years and then one week you know in their life ten years later we rejoin them in a in a very dramatic way i have to ask you you know andrew lloyd webber was inspired by watching a documentary about coney island and that inspired him to you know set love never dies right there and then of course reminds us of the freak shows of you know the carnivals and that sort of thing which you know has gotten under the skin of many people how do you feel about it paris and then all of a sudden you're in coney island is just such a different backdrop it is and i think it's remarkably poetic because if you if you're a true phantom fan you read many of the novels that have been written about this guy and you know that at first he was born defected and his mother kind of sold him away to a freak show and it was there locked in a cage that a young madame jiri saves him so now he's gotten away from the tortured life of the layer in the paris opera house and he's opened his own freak show so he's kind of the father figure of the people that are like him so he's he's made a world where looking deformed in having weird oddities and being different is okay and i think that's a huge statement i don't think it was a political statement at all when it was written but i think it's something that we could all learn from you know acceptance and love no matter what's on your face or what you know the world sees as is wrong with you is okay who knows we might have a new marvel character from all of these they might come calling darling they might come calling ruhani you have a comment oh i i'm just wishing you lock and break leg and i'm very very interested to see it what we look forward to the mini minneapolis audience coming out and supporting us at the orpheum it's gonna be a good ride i'm telling you you won't see more spectacularly designed show the lights the sets the costumes you're in for a treat the voices are fantastic the story line is gripping if i haven't soldier yet watch them video or but don't spoil the ending for yourself why is quite a good ending okay so my final question i have to ask this because i'm i'm performance singer you know the songs this time you know the iconic songs of a phantom of the opera how does it does is there some similarity there are the genres of music different yeah android weber's been quoted as saying this is his best score he's ever written and for the phantom of the opera purist don't worry we don't we don't directly we don't sing all i ask if you are music of the night those phantom one we have a completely new score but for our phantom fans at at some very key pivotal dramatic moment some of those melodies that you've grown to love over the last thirty years from the opera will sneak back in and no hits you something familiar without being direct quotations of that score it's very melodramatic and an operatic in its sense but it's a true pop operates true music theater powerful singing there's some fun vaudeville numbers of.
