"And so I think I hope that that when some awards and in parallel to that, the international Paralympic committee's we the 15 campaign was really powerful. So we might see some lines going that direction. Interesting. Yeah, I think Shannon, you can probably talk about this campaign in a bit better and more broadly than I can, but the EUA yours campaign the bless your ref and coach, which was quite fun. I wonder we'll see. Can I talk about it? Yeah, you've written so much, and yeah. I won't relitigate my feelings on that one because I've talked to her. I will spare the audience at home, another long chat about my feelings on that campaign because I really loved it. But it was interesting to sort of see that come up in the conversation. Yeah, and I think what has been on a few can prediction lists and yeah, we could see it went big, not just because the creative idea is fun and a bit different, but just the way it was executed, you know, mostly on TikTok. Yeah, and more broadly, I wonder, we'll see more TikTok kind of viral campaigns running out can this year and separately more metaverse campaigns. You know, there's a new kind of level of marketing. The collective apprehension we made it almost one episode that happened to talk about the metaverse. But it's apt. That's going to be a big theme in can this year. I've noticed quite a few campaigns come out in the weeks and months leading up to can that we're about making the metaverse more accessible and inclusive. My question is just have those brands become accessible and inclusive in the real world first. That seems like a bigger priority. But I think we're going to see that. In the canvas here. Yeah, there's, of course, the metaverse and web three and NFTs has become sort of this hovering conversation over the past year, and it's been a lot to process stateside. So to process it on an international level. It's a lot. I'm not close often to any of it. I really am not. It's just no one has yet to explain any of this to me in a way that is tangible and accessible. I want to understand a deeply want to understand, I just need someone to tell me something other than it's the future. It's what's happening. Maybe it's a safe space for me to finally understand. Yeah, it's interesting to kind of see what work will sort of catch the attention I imagine burberry is going to get a lot of love for open spaces. It was one of those things where I had to watch it twice. It'd be like, do I like this? And then by the 5th time, I was like, I actually love this. I really do. It's a really lovely visual feat. So I see some craft love coming out of this and it has been a lot of there has been a lot of talk about it. Also surprisingly, we're not surprisingly. It's a good campaign..

so much You're welcome Scott This week we were in an operating room in Houston methodist hospital where doctor Osama gave her head of the hospital's transplant program chat in front of a small bowl of ice and slush that had turned bright red There was a human kidney in that bowl Had just been removed from the living body of a man and was about to be transplanted by the body of a woman who needed it Doctor Gabriel told us it's amazing It's not just that it's somebody's kid who's their ability to take it out and put it in and make it produce here and give somebody this amazing life When I first started doing transplantation I used to hate doing living donor transplants The penalty was too high Their wife husband brother whatever wants to give you a kidney The emotional investment they make in giving you that It was very stressful I didn't like to do it I thought we had enough or should have enough cadaver transfers to not do this A fact of the mother is we have almost a 130,000 people on the kidney waiting list So that's why I've been over the past few years I've changed my mind completely and became a great supporter of living donation Next week on this program ten strangers brought together in a chain of life Now even times like these time for sports Russia and Belarus band from another world sports event Will there be a baseball season and when and coach Kay's final home game we're joined now by NPR's Tom Goldman Good morning Tom Hi Scott And some breaking news today Brittany griner the great American women's basketball Olympic gold medalist in WNBA star Reports coming out of Russia say that she's being held on an alleged drug charge What can you tell us Yeah brittney griner is one of the WNBA players who plays in Russia during the WNBA off season to make more money and reports say a drug sniffing dog detected vape cartridges containing hash oil in her luggage at the airport near Moscow Now this reportedly happened last month before Russia's invasion of Ukraine But certainly not a good time right now with hostilities between Russia and the west very high due to the war and with Russian athletes being banned throughout the sports world Grinders WNBA team the Phoenix mercury released a statement saying in part we are aware of and are closely monitoring the situation We remain in constant contact with her family the WNBA and MBA at this time our main concern is for safety physical and mental health and her safe return home The international Paralympic committee has changed its original position It will now prohibit athletes from Russia and Belarus from participating in the winter games which are happening right now in Beijing Why did they change course A pressure from national Paralympic committees and mainly from athletes You know the original decision to allow Russian and Belarusian athletes was hugely criticized It got to the point where there were threats of boycott at the paralympics and rising tensions in the athletes village So the international Paralympic committee the IPC reverse course the committee didn't want violence and didn't want the controversy to overwhelm the games and turn the focus away from the great athletes and their great stories And Scott how about this for a great story Ukraine is on top of the metal standings after day one of competition with three gold and a total of 7 medals The Ukrainian team leader called it a miracle that they even got to China One of the gold medalists in the men's vision impaired by Athlon race dedicated his metal to quote the guys protecting our cities Very heartwarming Athletes are also speaking out in baseball's labor negotiations They are you know it's interesting Last time regular season games were canceled due to a work stoppage the damaging players strike in 1994 95 There wasn't social media There is now in players are using it fully to try to connect with fans and explain apologize for the current mess which actually was initiated by team owners locking out players last December and then this week the ongoing labor impasse led MLB commissioner to cancel the start of the season Players are standing resolute about changing a financial system they say keeps them undervalued and underpaid is baseball revenues grow They're waging a good PR battle right now Scott but owners really have the upper hand financially This thing drags on Mike krzyzewski coach duke since 1985 national championship Chips 12 final four appearances three consecutive gold medals for the U.S. Olympics His last home game tonight a great coach and he never struck a player through a chair across the court What can you say What a boring guy huh Just one more games than any D one coach ever treated his players with respect A lot will be said tonight for sure as he coaches his last home game at duke's hallowed Cameron indoor stadium There will be pre and postgame ceremonies nearly a hundred former duke players accepted invitations to be there whopping ticket prices It's going to be quite the show Scott We have to acknowledge that the loss of a couple of extraordinary athletes this week too We do Shane Warren the great Australian cricket bowler that's like the pitcher in baseball He was rockstar famous He died of a suspected heart attack at the relatively young age of 52 And then a tragic death in women's collegiate soccer Stanford "She's already made a name for herself in the world of professional ice skating, being the 2022 Russian national champion and set 9 world records during her career. But what could be the ramifications for a young woman being allowed to compete in a global competition after failing a drug test, Laura Scott is a BBC senior news sports reporter, joins me now, good morning. Hi, Emma. We've got this decision then. Why is this decision so significant? Well, this whole doping controversy has really overshadowed these games here in Beijing. It's both troubling because it involves Russia and doping when Russia is still serving a ban for a state sponsored doping program, but it's particularly troubling and perhaps unique because it involves a 15 year old athlete, and that has caused concern around the world about how a banned substance ended up in the system of Camilla valieva, and has resulted in this scandal which, I mean, we have had this result today from the court of arbitration for sport, but the controversy is by no means over. And I think also it's particularly such a big issue because she made Olympic history only last week. She's already won a gold medal here at these games. And she's seen by many as perhaps one of the greatest figure skaters of all time, even though she's only at the very start of her career. So she's right in the spotlight. She is only a child, but it is a really troubling controversy. Because of course, being given a second chance because she's a minor, many may feel that undermines the message of a drug free sport and clean games. Yeah, we've had that kind of reaction already today from the likes of the world anti doping agency, the U.S. Olympic and Paralympic committee, the global athlete body, all saying that they feel that this is a disappointing decision because of the message that it sends. You know, if you take the world anti doping agencies response, for example, they say that what the court of arbitration for sport has said, which is that because the liver is so young, that is an exceptional circumstance and to suspend her would cause her irreparable harm..

"Yeah, yeah. Yeah, I agree. It's just crazy 'cause I'll get messages from people all around the world that are like, oh yeah, I have this the same injuries and they told me their story and I'm like, oh wow, there's a lot more people like me than I thought there was and it's kind of cool how you motivating somebody kind of just comes naturally because when people are like, oh, you inspired me to do this or this. I'm always very grateful because I'm like, you know, that's awesome because I'm just doing what makes me me and I'm just following my gut instinct on pretty much everything and just taking every opportunity that I possibly can. And if I'm motivate somebody else to live their life to do the same, every day is their possibly the last day because you know today could be your last day. We don't know when we're dying so I mean, why not take every single opportunity and why not do things that make you happy even if your family doesn't support you and your friends don't support you and doctors tell you that you can't do something. Because that's what happened with me after my after my injury happened. So how we're going to jump around a little bit because your story is, I don't want to say it's all over, but you literally do everything. Most of the time I interview somebody and we talk about snowboarding for an hour. But you are a surfer a skater, a snowboarder, a motocrosser. You kind of do it all. And you're a speaker. You have this giant story and you're only there under 30. We don't have to, I mean, you already said your age, but you're under 30. We'll keep it under 30. But how. Were your parents? When you were younger, did they like after the injury did they like coddle you and try to protect you or they like motivate you to get out there and go do it or I assume doctors were like your life will never be what it was, so what was like the what made you keep going and like keep trying things and keep failing at things I assume. Oh yeah, definitely. What counts me trying things was a few things that I always grew up with the people told me where a problem was that I'm very loud. I'm very opinionated and I'm very stubborn. And when I first saw my accident, the way that my parents really protected me and didn't really allow me to do a lot because they didn't want me to get injured. They were very adamant about me now retouching a dirt bike again, especially my mom. And I think just my Friends and pretty much everybody around me that just kind of looked at me as some type of sympathy. Like someone to give extra sympathy to you and feel pity for and I hated that. I hated feeling like, okay, I lost my arms, so I'm not capable of doing what I want anymore. That sounds stupid. So it just really made me more determined naturally because I'm so stubborn where I don't want I love proving people wrong. Is somebody says it's impossible for you to write dirt bike again? I just look at them and I'm like, all right, watch me. I'll do it. It's almost kind of like that reverse psychology and other parents tell us, you know, if you don't want your kids to do the dishes, tell them to not do the dishes, you know? That's kind of how it was just like my whole life. And I think it really is kind of catapulted to me to where I'm at today. Yeah, I find it so interesting when I speak to any adaptive sport athlete because you come in and then I'll be transparent. I come in and maybe I tiptoe around something or like and I don't know what proper words to use or I don't and now I'm like, oh no, these people, these humans are way more badass than I am. They're doing like, I think we sometimes as like a society or like ICU have an upper limb injury. And I'm like, oh, let me get that for you. Meanwhile, you're like helping me get down the mountain or like teaching me how to ride a dirt bike better. Like it's this weird, I don't know if it's like a paradox or a complex or I don't know what it is or why. And I love having these conversations because like again, me being transparent, sometimes they put me in really uncomfortable situations because I don't know the proper lingo or I don't know, I don't want to offend anybody, right? So it's so fun to have these conversations with athletes like yourself because you're like, oh no, basically F you, I'm an athlete. I'm better than you. You don't say that. But you know what I mean? Yeah. We're just, I mean, no one's normal, but we're just normal humans, like we're all humans, and just you had something catastrophic happen to you at a young age doesn't mean you can't do something that I can do. And probably because it's better. Yeah, that's actually one thing that I've that I've learned that I'm just known to be adapter community is that just going back to what you said earlier. You don't know someone's going to offend someone. I know some people that are super sensitive about their story because what they went through was really traumatic for them. And they know each of us as a human being individual, we all have our different levels of what we can handle and what we can't and what we can't. I mean, I'm kind of grateful that my accent happened at a young ish age because I was in still that state of mind of being a kid where my brain could still, you know, learn new things and be flexible and stuff and figure things out and get creative and be out of the box I'm grateful for that aspect. But when people are like, oh, well, don't you think you deserve this? Don't you think you deserve that? I'm like, I don't think I deserve anything. I'm just beyond grateful just to have the opportunities that I do. Because just because I lost my arm doesn't mean that what I went through is any more traumatic than a mother losing a child. I don't ever want to experience that. Now, what I go through doesn't mean that I'm entitled to things and I deserve things. I'm just grateful for the opportunities and grateful to be where I'm at. Rather than expecting that things are supposed to be happening just because, you know, I have a story and I lost my arm. Things happen to people every day. That's such a great, I don't want to say hot take, but outlook on that. Because I think we assume the opposite, not in a rude way, but like, you know, I think you are currently fighting to get to have your sport being an Olympic sport, correct a Paralympic sport. Yes. Yeah, my category got cut based off of a vote, not criteria, which I think is very, very wrong, because actually the upper limb female category for the international Paralympic committee we have the most licensed athletes out of all the categories in the paralympics. So how does that happen? So why would we not have enough girls show up at world chance? And not enough girls showed up during the COVID-19 competitions that were there were only like one or two of them. And they ended up getting canceled and they said, well, since no athlete showed up, when nobody was traveling anyways, they're like, we're just going to go and cut the category. So it really doesn't make a whole lot of sense. I don't know why they did that. Because again, we have a lot of we have a lot of girls that are licensed and a lot of girls that are 1000% ready to compete. So I just wasn't going to start a petition because this is just wrong. And aside from adaptive sports, it's not progressing the sport of snowboarding as a whole. Because there's a little girl with an up and disability watching the paralympics, and she doesn't see somebody like her. How is she ever going to get inspired or motivated to touch a snowboard?.

"The fbi fired an agent involved in the investigation into nassir. Both the gymnasts and senators on the judiciary committee called out justice department leadership for failing to appear at wednesday's hearing attorney general merrick. Garland is expected to testify next month. This is the testimony of simone biles. The four time olympic gold medalist who is widely considered to be the greatest gymnast of all time over the course of my gymnastics career. I have one twenty five world championship medals in seven olympic medals for team. Usa that record means so much to me. and i am proud of my representation of this nation through gymnastics. I am also a survivor of sexual abuse. And i believe without a doubt that the circumstances that led to my abuse and allowed it to continue our directly the result of the fact that the organizations created by congress to oversee and protect me as an athlete usa gymnastics and the united states olympic and paralympic committee committee failed to do their jobs. Nelson mandela once. Said there can be. There can be no keener revelation of a society soul than the way in which it treats its children it is the power of that statement that compels and empowers me to be here in front of you today. I don't want another young gymnasts olympic athlete or any individual to experience the horror that i and hundreds of others have endured before during and continuing to this day in the wake of the larry nassar abuse to be clear. Sorry take time to be clear. I blame larry. Nassar ally also blame an entire system that enabled perpetrated his abuse. Simone Biles: 'I Blame the System That Enabled Larry Nassar's Abuse'

"Before we begin our next segment. We note that we will be discussing sexual abuse the testimony. On capitol hill yesterday was both angry and anguished for usa gymnastics athletes said law enforcement including the fbi ignored them and lied about them when they said they were abused by former team. Doctor and convicted sex offender. Larry nassar simone. Biles was one of the women who testified to be clear. I blame larry nassar and i also blame an entire system that enabled perpetrated his joining us. Now is marissa witkowski hausky. She's an investigative journalist for usa today. Who began covering the abuse scandal years ago at the indianapolis star. It's been six years since usa gymnastics heard the first allegations. And it's been five years since you and other journalists at the indianapolis star began reporting on this listening to yesterday's testimonies. What stood out to you. What lawmakers heard yesterday was the continued frustration of survivors. Who felt that their allegations against larry nassar had not been taken seriously enough. They had been calling for change in calling for accountability for the failures of usa gymnastics of the us olympic and paralympic committee and of the fbi former olympic gymnast michaela maroney in her testimony directly. Blame the fbi for not acting fast enough to stop by larry nassar. Here's her testimony. What is the point of reporting abuse if our own. Fbi agents are going to take it upon themselves to bury that report in a drawer.

It was uganda's second middle to molly is the president of uganda's paralympic committee. He's in tokyo now. And tells me that david among has made a big impact on para sports in the country since two thousand sixteen so that was time. Uganda got its first paralympic middle so that opened up the eyes of government the eyes of the public and also the perception started changing the perception about physical disability. In uganda. he means bomani tells me ugandan. Government is starting to see that. Disabled athletes are worth investing. In this year they sponsored four paralympian to go to tokyo. That molly says he wants to see more government gun safe find two hundred able bodied athletes and then it finally five war at most at most at most thin five to ten disabled athletes at most by molly says that type of sports discrimination starts very early in this person with disability children with disability. "A part to play in the legacy that there were unstable. All some male only sports at the paralympics for example the blind football is owned by male athletes. Yes So there's a question of time. I think encouraging women who now maybe realized they can compete in in events like wheelchair rugby. Which is a mixed events also issues around the lack of women in leadership positions in paris too. But you said forty two percents of all athletes here are women. Certainly not where it should be. But it's definitely moving in the right direction. It's an increase over the last nine years if you look at london. Two thousand twelve is increased by eighteen. Point seven percents and the ipc. The international paralympic committee say it is definitely one of their top priorities as here. Let's look ahead now. We are about midway through the paralympics will. Can we look forward to in the coming days. Oh plenty more. We're going to see the great dame sarah storey back in action tamar. She's already won one gold. Hey she's got two more opportunities still to come forty three years old now. She didn't unprecedented unprecedented double in rio five years ago for british athlete where she won gold in cycling and in track running. She is trying to do that again. He said we will see her on the track. 'em in the national stadium right now. She'll be competing later this week. In the four hundred meters and then later today a more kind of global icon. If you like we're gonna see another glimpse of her tatyana mcfadden. She's one of the icons of the paralympics competing in seven events here in tokyo and an amazing back story. She was born in russia in one thousand nine hundred nine into an orphanage. She was born with spina bifida she couldn't she couldn't walk but there was no access to a wheelchair as she walked on our hands for the first six years of her life. She was adopted by an american woman moved to the states and has since changed laws as well in. Us schools to allow the equal opportunities for disabled students. Alongside able bodies so again. I've mentioned it already. But the stories here at the harlem picks it just remarkable brilliant here and hopefully our gold medals on or in fact all of our medals table. "I had a great experience with a family member who ended up with the disability on that. Tell my love for disability. Sport came in to play in. I sought out as many volunteer opportunities. As i could. I went to a great university. That offers adaptive has got to be witches really rare. There's not a lot of programs out there because they offer it. They had a lot of connections with the pero. Sport world volunteered a lot through that became at track and field. Appear track and field official. Wasn't exactly my strength. So then i you know. Continue to work through the volunteer ranks until met the right people to get trained as a class fire. And i've been doing this for. I believe about five years. I've been classifying for the us. Now i'm just a us class for. I shouldn't say just there are so i'm the first layer athletes that go through us than if they want to compete internationally. They also go on and get classified internationally. Okay so the classification process for athletes do the is it so they start at the sport that they want to compete in in nationally so that they would see you and what is that process like for them. As submitting materials is a do they pick the classification in or is it a discussion. It is kind of a process that not a lot of people understanding. It is evolving. So what i tell you right now is probably gonna change in the year after that. So i question. Doesn't athletes start at national and then go onto international. There are some athletes that will just go straight onto international in the us. That's not as common in other countries where internationals their only opportunity. That's more common every athlete. That competes at the paralympic level when we start to look at the winter games or summer games has to have an international klatten. They moved now to where every athlete has a class before they get to. The games in the past at rio was the first time. Actually put that in place. Yeah in the past they could get classed at the at the games. Yeah which is intimidating if you're an athlete and you get there and you've been training at a certain class will use my kind of area that i know. I know. it's not winter sport bedroom field if they train it. Let's say a t fifty three which is a seated athlete. Typically spinal cord injuries in impaired muscle. Power or impaired range of motion there. The next level up would be t fifty four. And let's say they get to the international gains in there than class at a t fifty four. They have a whole different set of times. They have to try to meet So we try to get them. Class prior to the games in we try to class them as accurate as possible at the us level or the national level. There other national bodies that will cover that so that they're in the best possible seat so how we do that because that was your satisfaction. They they do some paperwork. They have to submit medical documentation that they would have the minimal disability requirement. There is not set by the international paralympic committee. There's a ten impairments that they can classify on men there's minimal criteria for each one. They submit that to our u. s. national offices. They review it then. Local organizing bodies decide whether or not they want to host a panel. A panel is made up of technical class. Fire a medical class liar and that again is set by the ipc to decide what all is needed on. The us level will go with just a medical technical on the international level than they would also have a chief class fire in addition so it's a panel.

"Pedestals on the pitchy tolerate full. We're not special always lie. That's a clip. From a video for we the fifteen meaning. Fifteen percent of the world's population having disabilities the stigma attached to disability changes. When you watch the sport. That's according to craig spence a spokesman for the international paralympic committee as he says these gains will change your attitude toward disability. So let's get to the sports more than four thousand athletes competing across twenty two events. The world bank hillier is on the olympic and paralympic games. Beat for us so we saw a few new sports at the olympics is summer any new sports showing up at the paralympics. Yeah there are two new ones badminton and taekwondo or on the paralympic lineup for the first time for badminton. Japan's own huma. Yamazaki is a fan favorite to win. Both the doubles and singles events. And the taekwondo competition is really stacked. You're going to want to be watching. Amy trusdale from great britain who is clear favourite for a medal this year and also bollore aired on bought from mongolia. He's got a lot of credentials under his belt. He's currently ranked first in the world and is a four time world champion which has earned him nicknames like the mongolian monster and the unbeatable mongolian fighter. And it's important to remember these badminton. And taekwondo athletes have been at the top of their game for years and decades slum cases. But they've never gotten to compete on the paralympic stage for such an international audience and for some of them. Gold medal is kind of that last empty spot in their trophy case that they wanna fill so tokyo. Two thousand twenty is going to be a new and major opportunity for these athletes. That's exciting definitely going to be watching out for those news. Sports and players. But let's not forget the repeat athletes coming back to the paralympics. Who are the reigning champs on your radar a lot to choose from here. I there's fanny illitch a swimmer. From hungary at sixteen. She was the youngest athlete to represent her country at the two thousand eight games and tokyo is her fourth time at the paralympics and she's only gotten better over the years in two thousand twenty. She was even named Female athlete of the year. By hungary's glamour magazine. I reached out to her after she landed in japan and she shared why the paralympics and her sports swimming are so important to her. At my very first teaming competition i met for the first time beeper. Same impairments. This was the point that i felt i found my group. My sport and my going. Tokyo is to finish as a middle east at the paralympics. As you can imagine. Marco that's a goal. I heard from a lot of athletes. Including brazilian zimmer daniel diaz who is south america's most decorated paralympian ever with twenty four medals already to his name he's actually announced that he's calling it quits after tokyo and retiring after a successful career. But he says he doesn't want his legacy to just be about his trips to the podium phoenix on the density loss to cut by sowings goons speaking about paralympian diaz said what defines each one of us is what is inside of us and inside of us. There's a very strong force capable of achieving big dreams and big goals. Ds added that he wants his legacy to be about breaking the barrier of prejudice that sometimes surrounds paralympian. that would certainly make mark. Are there sports. Bianca included in the paralympics. That are not at the olympics. Yeah there are two of them. The first is bochum which is played by athletes with neurological impairments. That impact motor function. This is really similar to the italian game of botchy athletes throw balls at a target on the ground and try to get the ball as close to the target as possible. Then there's also goal ball. It's actually one of the oldest paralympic sports and was the first sports specifically for athletes with visual impairments here. Each team has three players who try to throw their ball into the opponent's net which is a big net kind of like a soccer net. Turkey and lithuania took gold back in rio and twenty sixteen. But israel's women's team has made some serious strides then and they could possibly get their first gold medal this summer in tokyo. Go bowl and bochum looking forward to that and much more a lot of action. The world's bianca hillary's been covering the olympics and paralympics for us bianca. Thanks for raising the curtain. Thanks so much marco. The paralympic opening ceremonies in tokyo today had fireworks dancing and the iconic parade of athletes. No fans in the stands. Of course the husband of vice president khama harris was one of the dignitaries in attendance. You can check out the sites on our instagram. Find us at the world dot. Org slash instagram.
