We're seeing a lot of moderates and conservatives and even registered Republicans taking to the streets with their rallies. We just saw a boat show recently. We've seen other mobilizations and listen. I mean, I'm also realistic. John, New Jersey's fortune on Carlos are gonna remain blue..

Ellen Marshall has more on that the festivities are going on with a bit of a backlash this year. Christopher Columbus Day is still a point of contention between Italian Americans who say they're celebrating their culture and activists who condemned the Explorer for mistreating indigenous people as well as his spread, helping spreading slavery. I should say just this summer, protestors clashed with police when they tried to tear down the Columbus statue in Grant Park. Then the city removed all of its statues and Chicago public schools dropped his name from federal holidays. As for the statues, the city hasn't said what they plan to do with them. Early morning military parade held in North Korea for anniversary of ruling party

"Held a bit of a party, the 75th anniversary of the KP W, the Korean Workers Party or Communist Party of North Korea. And the Kim Jong UN used it as an opportunity to Unveil some, frankly, a surprising weapons systems, everything from a new, larger ICBM that has, as of this early this morning never been seen before. And there wasn't just one trembling down the parade way. There were several in a row. Right down to some small arms, then we didn't know the North Koreans. Had now not granted. You know, this isn't the entire North Korean army. But it's a thousands and thousands of troops representing the North Korean naval Infantry, which is they're Marines. Army border guards the whole thing off some first impressions and I'll send a link out to the unedited Fourcade 2.5 hour stream. But it's given us some insight into whether or not Corona has actually hit mirth Korea or not so thing one. Kim Jong UN is wearing a Western style suit and to be totally honest, he looks like he's lost weight. The reasoning behind that is because nobody would survive the encounter. If they came to him and said We're going to put you in a corset for 2.5 hours. Hear me out. We're gonna put you on a course it for 2.5 hours. Make you look thinner. Even his sister probably wouldn't wouldn't be down with that. It really looks like legit. He lost weight, which might give credence to did he have the cove ID four months ago or one of the five times this year he's been declared dead. Maybe there was some sickness. Besides the obvious thing, which is that he is a mother, love and fat ass on DH, the fattest man in North Korea. And I don't think That's even a debate and sew up there on the dais and the viewing stand. Of course, he had rows and rows and rows of the stone faced upper ranks of the North Korean People's Army. These are the guys in the khaki uniforms with the rose of medals. Festooning their uniform from their collarbone to their scrotum on the left side and the right side there, just so out there so awesome that they don't just wear one row one set of ribbons on there. Left chest. No, no, no, no. There that much better than everyone else on Earth. They need to rose. They should wear two suits. They're going to be wearing him down the back soon anyway, The skill with those guys is to not Crack and emotion. The only emotion acceptable is gushing tears, which on cue happened today. So Kim Jong un gave about 20 minutes speech before, he said, Unleash the amazing parade in Korea. So thing one nobody and there were about 100 luminaries, etcetera on the viewing, Stan. Nobody wearing a mask. Oh, and they were shoulder to shoulder on in the front row. Kim Jong un was flanked. Shoulder shoulder by his generals and then behind him in several rose not to. But as they say in certain military services were other senior ranking guys. No masks. No

"I'd like to welcome to the show Ashley Hall who is coming to us from Singapore and coming to talk to us about Singapore actually welcome to the show, Chris How's it going? You're not originally from Singapore. Accent you might have that might have picked that up. I remember Ginnie British. I've lived in a couple of different countries in Europe but I've moved single six months ago. Got In Britain in Singapore are just so alike that they islands just once unskilled. Excellent and why should someone go to Singapore? So I was just reading this morning actually apparently now it's the fifth most visited city in the world. So lots of people are interested in right now. Really. Yeah. So what's really put it at the top of people's minds especially I guess in the US is film out Crazy Rich Asian Plus filled with an Asian costs and it sentencing a ball it's really about spying author who who live here is a great book to read as well logging maybe watching the film, but it's GonNa. Love people interested about the architecture. It's a Super Morton city I fell in love with a couple of times after I visited people think of Marina Bay Sands, which is the the futuristic hotel within a became. The tau is like a Super Modin accessible way to enjoy Asia. Excellent. And what would you recommend? We do when we come to Singapore. Burst important thing to think about when he come to. Singapore, is the climate. So if I can share with you the first time I came I was visiting because my sister married a Singaporean and I wanted to come and check out the place in. The family but I think I have my expectations about how hot and sticky was GONNA be. Status because I couldn't stand it first time offense even Singapore I'm like I'm so please beginning I WANNA go back somewhat cool because it just wasn't ready for it but. Time after time I sent back Bethel work and the the place grew on me so my recommendation would be. Be A wet. It's GONNA be hot and sticky at pack accordingly, pack light clothes and try and real your day. So the schedule so I'm GONNA give you. With that in mind that we're GONNA try and keep you indoors during the midday sun and then enjoying these nice evening shorts and tee shirt whether evening. I've is arriving during the week because the the attractions will be quieter. So if you're coming in from the US most US flights coming in the morning, some European direct flights arrive in the morning as well. Some Poli time ones come in the afternoon. So settling, arrive, get your bearings adjusting the trying walk around a little bit to walk off the Jet Lag I. Think a a great way once you've done that it's the head of. The flower the gardens by the bay. Just the other side of the Marina SANS EXACTLY BEHIND MARINA BAY SANDS TO ICONIC DOMES that you'll recognize from Lupul skyline. and. The great because they're conditioned. Fussy. Let's just be honest the inside and it's a really interesting place to domes one. Is called the flouting and it's quite dry. When you go inside, it's woman it's dry and it's X. exhibiting flowers from all over the world. So it's specialized stuff that's from Southeast Asia they also have a nice a subtropical garden as well. So it's just nice to walk around there and adjust, but the real killer, the the thing that I absolutely love about Singapore it's my favorite is the cloud forest dime. super interesting. They've simulated under get picky about this I'm a joker for by training. They seem the cloud for th. So sort of what you've seen as like Costa Rica, they increase the temperature, increase the humidity, but kept relatively cool. So you get this two layers to it and you've got one layer, which is I think stimulating like a thousand foot and then the next up another five hundred feet. So you see in this one attraction to different attitudes of short. and. It's amazing. They've got waterfalls. It's misty. You get amazing views of the city because it's. Greenhouse. You can see the downtown from that and yes just a really interesting exhibit. One reason you can see the downtown from there is that it's multi level. So it's not it's not a flat dome you're climbing up into this I. thought it was great to I. Completely Agree With Your assessment that I've only been in the cloud dome I haven't been in the Flower Dome Safe. You'll shorten time just do the. For they do a combined ticket so you can get a ticket to both, and then if you get that, you also have access to something cool to tree books, which is why I'd recommend doing straight ASTA. So anybody who's familiar with David ATTENBOROUGH BBC a series will know that I mean it's it's a pretty gloomy story about the environment but I found it really interesting how he ended one of the series by saying he held up Singapore's the example, the shots of of these magic trees and that's without artificial. Singapore's created this this area on reclaimed land within the last ten years, which is why is expected to come on the show and talk about it is the last episode was about ten years ago said anyone hasn't been recently does lose more stuff to do and they've created this brand new downtown area and they've given it over completely to this garden because the advantage of being in the tropics is. Amazing chlorophyll and really great environment to grow that stuff. The Tree Wilkes they've laced together artificial materials and then allowed plants to grow up them. So they all human creative forest, which is super interesting David Asmara's just saying, Hey, this is the future of what cities should be not keeping each our cities but bringing them in being sensitive environment. On the treetop walks can elevate which takes you up quite high and you between these trees but then parade. Ten stories off I. Guess See have again a really nice view of the city a number recommending the doing this in the late afternoon time four PM onwards when it's cooler. So yeah, that's a super interesting attraction

Hot One hundred hundred for ten weeks. Peaking at number one is it a group guerrilla be disco duck see Funky Kong Cong or D.. Burgi bullfrog. Well how could I forget this one. It's actually even played in the movie. Saturday night fever which came out a year later and that of course would be. The Rick Dees hit disco duck. And you're right. The answer is be discovered the body the other they were also correct that was included in the movie Saturday night fever although Rick Dees Management. NJIT decided not to allow the song on the movie soundtrack fearing compete with his own sales boy. What a mistake? That was right. Awful awful man because you think about the artis. You kind of got floated. Along on that Saturday night fever soundtrack like Kool and the gang had open sesame on that on that album and every time let's sold right exactly the virus taveras. They all made bank offense soundtrack. Yeah being featured on a movie soundtrack is one way to it makes a fortune so not a smart move by Rick Dees but you know. He's got his radio fortune so I'm sure he's Not Sweating it too much. Well Josh thank you for giving me a trivia question I could get I. I appreciate that. It's been a few months since I've gotten a question correct so I am holding my head up high and you at least got one of our three correct so I hope you're holding your head up high as well absolutely. I'm glad it could be a part of this. Thanks so much Josh. So as indicated by our Trivia round the next hip episode which will build off of our most recent full length that parade episode is going to be about comedy and novelty hits on the billboard charts. You know I'm using the novelty hits of Nineteen fifty-eight as a jumping off point to talk about these goofy chart hits which really were much bigger in the early rock era than they are now. It's hard to build a career as a novelty recording artist. Some have tried but there have been many one offs Folks who have succeeded briefly and then never heard from again. However we're going to talk about at least East One person who managed to make a whole career as a novelty recording artist? I think it's pretty obvious who that is. And in a way the history of novelty hits on the charts tracks tracks some of the same changes in chart methodologies that Christmas hits leverage to become bigger and bigger hits so much the way Christmas hits had to wait for digital title technology to change the way we measure hit. A novelty recording hits are starting to come back on the charts because of technology. So we're GONNA talk about that in the next episode of Hit parade prayed my thanks to rich Joswiak for joining me on this episode of the bridge and rich. Tell us where folks can find you. I guess you could go to my twitter. That would probably be the easiest most centralized realized point. R I C H J jozy. R&B that it is sort of multi veiling Pob r a c kind of soupy stuff. She was on the first record And if I had to pick from that list and I would let that song to number one and knock off. I don't WanNa the crime which is nevertheless totally totally agree. You're one for one Josh. Are you ready for question to its do it all right like I said this is kind. Have a hybrid question. Are you ready for question three. Let's try okay. What two hits which peaked at number one and number two on the hot one hundred in the same week in the early the eighties were coincidentally both parodied by novelty superstar? Weird Al Yankovic and became two of his earliest hot one hundred hits a I love rock and roll and Mickey be beat it and jeopardy see my hi Sharon A- and another one bites the dust or d like virgin and King of pain. "But like the Song Rhythm Nation State State of the world was propulsion and catching slipping. It's bold messages into an accessible radio friendly package in mid February nineteen ninety-one and M. records anointed the track officially by sending radio stations. A state of the world promotional single however am chose not to issue issue state of the world has a retail single in music stores. This would be a critical decision as I explained in previous previous hit parade episode our Rate War against a single edition billboard rules at the time required that song be issued as a retail single single purchaseable by the general public to be eligible for the hot one hundred as we also discussed in that episode by the Early Ninety S J touch this touch this the major labels were beginning to experiment with not issuing retail singles us to see if they could spur consumers to buy more albums the prior summer. Mc Hammer smashed. You can't touch this was only issued at retail as a twelve inch single for club deejays and not in the popular ca single and CD single formats. It made hammers album. Please hammer don't hurt him. A ten times platinum mega smash living in them is justice. The Billboard magazine reported in Nineteen ninety-one that an was attempting something similar with state of the world hoping hoping to boost sales of the rhythm nation album but there was a big difference by Nineteen ninety-one. Rhythm nation was nearly a year and a half old. Take and it's prior seven hits had all been issued as retail singles. It was an odd strategy to promote a single to radio so late in the game and not offer it for sale in retail stores and m's gamut didn't really work rhythm nation had had a great run on the album it was now quintupled platinum but it had fallen fallen out of the chart's top thirty and would not return meanwhile state of the world was a radio smash in addition to the hot one hundred billboard billboard maintains a radio songs chart that tracks the songs receiving the most airplay regardless of their retail availability and on radio songs by April one thousand nine hundred one state of the world was a number five hit so here's the bottom line. If am records had issued shoot state of the world is a retail single making it eligible for the hot one hundred with that kind of airplay it likely would have been a top five hot one hundred hit even even if it had sold only modestly. It almost surely would have been a top ten hit. Why would I am leave a near guaranteed chart smash on the table bull as it were if it wasn't actually going to sell more albums why not enshrined Janet Jackson in the record books. No one in the Jackson camp has ever formerly explained this odd decision and one can only speculate for the record. Michael Janet Jackson recorded for competing labels him for Sony Music's epic records she at the time on am there would be little incentive for these labels not to compete for billboard bragging rights. It's but Michael and Janet were siblings. Did Janet Pola Punch to keep the brother's record for most top tens from an album intact sounds a bit silly but Michael's obsession with chart records was legendary and well chronicled again one can only guess but but with more top five hits than any album before or since Janet Jackson's rhythm nation eighteen fourteen retains its status as the most hit packed out in Gilbert history no album in the years since even in the digital era which has generated a greater number of short little hot. One hundred hits for Superstars was like drake. No one has matched Janet's feet.

We told you about woodstock performers who did not have the best time at the festival. Some of them even asked to be taken out of the Woodstock Film and Soundtrack which which of these performers who were on stage in August nineteen sixty nine did not appear in either the woodstock film or Soundtrack a Janice Joplin be the WHO see crosby stills Nash and young or D. Shana well GonNa guess a just because of all those artists Janice Joplin seems like the most woodstock and I'm guessing that that there'd be some irony at the question. You guessed absolutely correct. The correct answer is age. Janice Joplin unhappy with her rather inebriated performance in the wee hours of Sunday morning. Joplin asked to be removed from the woodstock film and Soundtrack. LP while Neil young by the way also refused to be filmed his bandmates crosby stills and Nash did appear in the film and several songs of C. S. US and wise did make the album alright. You're one for one rock on so are you ready for question to sure all right here we go question chew all of these albums generated a record seven top ten hits on Billboard's hot one hundred but which one actually did better than the rest by producing seven top five hits a Michael Jackson thriller. Be Bruce Springsteen born in the USA see Janet Jackson Rhythm Nation Eighteen fourteen or D Drake Scorpion. Wow and I don't know anything about drink so I'm not going to touch that one of those three. I'm just just GonNa Guess Michael Jackson. When all else fails? The answer is usually thriller I'm sorry the correct answer was see his sister Janet Jackson Rhythm Nation Janet's brother Michael did set the record in one thousand nine hundred four when thriller thriller produced its seventh top ten hit that feet has been matched by Bruce Jan and drake but Janet's seven top ten hits reached the highest position of any set of hits. They were all top five hits all right. You're one for two. We've got one more question that light question. Too is a preview of next month's episode. Are you ready for question. Four of them were number one hits including three of the following which of these was not a hot one hundred number one hit a miss. You much coach be rhythm nation. "You. That's welcome back by John Sebastian a number one hit from nineteen seventy six wchs as we told you in last month's hit parade Sebastian the former lead singer of the loving spoonful wasn't even supposed to play the Woodstock Festival in nineteen sixty nine for Sebastian Woodstock was an accidental bridge between his career with eleven spoonful full and his career as a solo artist which eventually produced this chart topping hit and these mini episodes bridge edge are full length monthly episodes. Give us a chance to catch up with listeners and enjoy some hit parade trivia this month. I'm pleased to introduce as my co host minute producer for these mini episodes Oshawa Salute. This is her first time behind the MIC on hit parade the bridge so Oshawa welcome to the bridge. Thanks so much Chris. It's an honor to be here doing the bridge with you while it's an honor to have you so you have been producing the show for us since last month. August was your first bridge episode but I think you've been listening to the show for a while. That is true. I'm a huge fan and in fact I have a favorite episode that I wanNa tell you about. Oh fantastic. The first episode that I had a total galaxy brain experience listening into was the Madonna episode the Veronica Electronica edition because it bridged pun intended together to parts of my personal music history in a way that was really unexpected for me growing up my mom was the musical educator of the house she had really good and broad taste and she taught me a a lot of what I know but my dad only liked one artist and that was Madonna wow he's Madonna superfan exactly he move of to the US in the eighty s and his brain sort of just imprinted on her and he didn't like any other music so obviously I had a lot of curiosity the about her growing up and eventually once I started listening to music I came to really respect her as a pop star and icon and when I saw that there was a Madonna episode of Hip Parade. I was like Oh cool I'm going to learn something about the eighties and the time that my dad moved here to the US but you blew my mind because instead we talked about Madonna in the ninety s and ninety s Electronica so I'm for Miami Florida. Florida and I totally dabbled in their rave culture. That was happening there. I went to Your Ultra Music Festival a few times in high school breath and the artists that you mentioned in that episode like the prodigy the chemical brothers and moby those artists were far past their prime but they were still headlining festivals that I went to I was in high school which as you pointed out Madonna was indirect dialogue without seen and that just really blew my mind because you took me from something that I thought Oughta as like an artist. My Dad liked to the ELECTRONICA that I- imprinted on as a teenager and thought was so cool of course the topic of our most recent full length parade. If I may segue is in the past for both you and me I mean the Woodstock Festival predates my birth. I am certainly a middle aged man but I am not that old and I do not remember what stock not because I was there. and you know sampled the brown acid but because I was not born yet when woodstock happened so the Woodstock episode researching this episode was a lot of fun work for me but you know there were pieces of it that I already knew. There were parts of it that I had to get educated on yeah. I thought the framing of like where each artist was before and after woodstock was really important and and also really interesting because when we think about about festivals now it's so rare for a festival to put an artist on the map. It happens more or the other way around right well yeah. I mean think about that poster that comes out every year when they announced the Coachella lineup. Everybody's looking at you know not only who are the headliners right. Whether it's a a beyond say or a Kanye store pick your favorite rock band Tame Impala. Let's say yeah but also where the other bands all fall in the you know hierarchy bands and there was absolutely a hierarchy of Dan's at Woodstock doc as I point out in the episode you can even if you WanNa Google it folks you can even find out how much everybody woodstock was paid. I allude to it briefly in the episode but everything from from what new acts like Sean on our paid versus you know what a headliner like the WHO or blood sweat and tears were paid.

"I definitely am. Thank you very much. All right. Well, thanks for joining us on hip parade the bridge. Thank you, Chris. Oh, man. Chris record. Here is really not good. I think it's been about six months since I've actually gotten that question. Right. Well, I kinda love our listeners for it. But I mean that was a hard question. I I was really hard. I didn't know that Creedence Clearwater revival was from California. I always thought that they were some sort of, you know, Louisiana swamp ban because that's sound like, right? No that much I knew and that's one of the interesting paradox of credence as a band is that they sound like they're from the by. They even had a hit called born on the bayou, but they are from California, and, you know, their leader, John Fogerty is this really interesting figure he he's almost like the ultimate American hit maker fifty years ago in the sense that he had you know, elements of rock and country and pop and even a little bit of in be like their first big hit was was an R&_B cover all baked into this music. He wrote in and he he wrote these just irrepressible songs that were instantly. Catchy. And in the case of a song problem. Mary iconic. There's a reason why that became a hit twice not only by credence, but then just a year later for continue Turner, as you know, in a much more Aren be rave up for him. So I wanna talk about this unusual record that Creedence Clearwater revival has it's one of the fun bits of chart trivia, if you talk to billboard Chartered's, everybody likes to recite this data point that credence have five number two hits. And they never went to number one. But also talk a little bit. As you saw that last trivia question about the number one hits that blocked credence some of them are classics. I I mentioned three of them in that question. Some of them are not and one of the things I like to remind people of that as great as the sixties were and is amazing. The music of the sixties was a lot of the hits of sixty eight sixty nine seventy we're not classics. You know, they were, you know, goofy little novelty records that you know, were just a massive hits in their day and credence was blocked. By songs as great as bridge over troubled water, and let's call the more minor hits. And we'll we'll talk about them when we do our next full length episode. So I'm really excited to listen. Because I think this is some trivia, you probably don't know. But my go-to karaoke song is proud Mary really excited. Yes. It is. It's it's it is the credence version. Interesting. Yeah. I think it's just one of the reasons I pick it for karaoke strategy is it's a song. Everybody knows and loves so the singing of the crowd around you really drowns me out. So it's it's really more strategy. But I can't wait to listen. I'm a big fan of CR, so I'm really looking forward to it. And thank you so much again for having me on this episode of the bridge. It's always a pleasure to have you on teacher. I'm TJ Rafael, the senior producer for this league podcast network, and I'm personal anti coupon marching on the one..

However, give me more outlasted the others enduring for seventeen weeks on chart ninety may have delivered a flop on the MTV VM awards show stage of gimme more. But she served it up as a popular mover on the dance floor. Wow. That is fascinating. Especially given the context that you just shared about. You know, what a? Yeah. The way that single was received when it came out at the height of britney's nervous, breakdown and all that. So that is a fantastic trivia tidbit right there. Yeah. I when I have tough days, I tell myself if Britney could survive two thousand seven I can survive today. That's a wonderful life philosophy hand. That is great. Yeah. Well, you are now very clearly the biggest trivia Victor in the history of hip raid the bridge in New York history because you stumped me and got all three of the questions. Right. So you really get some serious bragging rights awesome. Nice job rich east coast. Thank thank you. Seriously. It was such a pleasure talking to you. And yeah, likewise, all best. And I hope you enjoy our next episode of hit parade. Thanks richie. Thanks TJ. Take care shower itchy. Chris. I can't believe you got stumped. Again. Our listeners there mazing over here. Yeah.
