The Coronavirus Pandemic Hurts Some Industries, Benefits Others

"Many industries are furloughing or firing workers. But some are hiring. Npr's Alina Seljuk has the story. Despite all the shutdowns and lockdowns Americans still need food and medicine and that means some companies are actually hiring at least temporarily supermarkets like Kroger and Albertsons Pharmacies Lake CVs and walgreens and retail giants like Amazon and Walmart. Not only are we not laying off? People were actually position. We're going to be hiring additional one hundred fifty thousand new associates. That's executive Dan Bartlett last week announcing a major hiring push promising to get some people into new jobs in a matter of hours. Amazon has a similar plan to hire one hundred thousand new delivery and warehouse workers in the next few weeks to keep up with a big spike in online shopping papa. John's and domino's are hiring thousands of cooks managers drivers same at meal. Kit companies like Blue Apron and grocery delivery platforms like shipped and INSTA- cart with it wants to sign on up to three hundred thousand delivery GIG workers more than doubling its contract workforce or in transportation logistics for example. Hiring is actually up seven percent a month over month from March thirteenth. Daniel Joe is a senior economist at the jobs and recruiting website glass door. He says those transportation numbers account for new hires at warehouses of all kinds including retail and new jobs are being posted by local governments and healthcare organizations basically call center workers or front desk associates. These are folks who are helping to field questions. Some of the companies that are adding new jobs including Amazon. Instant card have faced criticism from their current workers who want protective gear hazard pay and broader access to paid sick leave still. These new jobs are an option for many workers who find themselves suddenly unemployed because of Corona virus and the companies that are hiring specifically targeting. Them you can imagine not. There's an awful lot of people who have lost their normal livelihoods and are desperate to generate some income to support their family. Ruth Milkman is a professor of sociology and Labour Studies at the City University of New York. The whole point of paid sick leave is to not force workers to have to choose between their livelihood and their house or the health of their kids. But these workers are going to be put in that position. She says the jobs that are growing fast. Many of them are our leave with limited benefits and pay and of course they're risky because they involve interacting with other people while most of the country is asked to stay at home and isolate a reminder that in times of crisis some of the lowest paid jobs become essential

A History of Seduction

A History of Seduction

"Clement. Knox joins US now from London. His new book is called Seduction History from the enlightenment to the present Clement. Thanks for being here so your day job. I want to start there. Because you have a book oriented day job you work as a nonfiction buyer at waterstones which is of course a major British bookstore teen. What's your job like there? What do you do so their tour of managing nonfiction and about two hundred and eighty stores? My job really is just to get the the right books and the right stores. I'm responsible for history philosophy politics Papa. Johns I mean about nine categories overall and so. We do a lot with the publishers booksellers as well. Did you get to pick which categories you're responsible for? No when I got the job I was just assigned and then they'll kind of a reshuffle if he has got a few more categories as well they kind of work perfectly because it more or less alliance with what I'm interested in reading and what I'm interested in writing see you're deciding which books go into waterstone's the chain into which stores and how many copies are ordered exactly that to you. So that's a very powerful position. It's very structured is a very fair how we how we do it and is a constant communication publishers stores and sometimes even the authors as well we very even-handed brushing away and there's no kind of mysterious. What would probably shooter who understand. What's your typical day? Like a lot of meetings a lot of looking at science because a lot of reading of publicity plans and back and forth people. He wants us to buy their. Berko by book or by even more so. Are you living months ahead of time looking at? What are the books coming out this fall? Oh Oh yeah. We're tasked with trying to look as far as possible. So wig about to start. Looking at the timber Tiber November on average would normally thinking three months ahead of the east. And what happened with your book? The decider like we're going to order a hundred thousand copies of seduction. Yeah I I wish it was it by my boss has taken over that completely and utterly redeem. Oh look thing I try and pretend you know having to stay in a total of ignorance about one's own buck. I agree. Yeah but let's talk. Let's talk about your book. This may seem like perhaps a silly question but let's define seduction exactly. How is it action separate from courtship? How is it different from something? Maybe more creepy and less mutual like sexual harassment. Like what is seduction? I think the crucial aspect is selection. It's psychological and fumes kind of like confrontation between the minds and the passion of two different individuals in English law. That was a whole body of law do seduction discussing in some detail and wish would later it was. It came to America with with the mayflower that was developed in an extraordinary way and in those laws there was a distinction made between between rape which is obviously a What is coercive violent and seduction was seen as distinct from rape and she assumed that consent had been obtained that consent was in some way vitiated or somehow degraded by the techniques by which it was one so seduction carry that burden. That somehow someone's being over and perhaps the method used to win them over the Underhand but that's only one definition. There's a whole other definition which would say you know. It's just about courtship and game playing and it's fun and this is dawn which is dawn sexual freedom. Did you focus on that fun? Dance in this book or did you cover the full gamut the way the book is kind of structured is the. There's like a dialectic. Going on and one half of the history of seduction is about people worrying about sexual freedom worrying about things going wrong about the collision desire empower the capacity for abuse and wrongdoing. That is one of the history and the other half is about sexual freedom being this exciting enjoyable thing which which is buried lighthearted and people Is The insurance of the church. Will the government so the book kind of structured around the kind of dichotomy and not conflict between our two years of war sexual freedom is and what that means deduction your subtitle is history from the enlightenment the presidency? You're focusing mostly on the modern era. But let's start just briefly with that premodern era talk about what our earliest ideas of seduction were. Maybe perhaps grounded in with Allah G. And then how that changed as you moved into the Judeo Christian era the reason I start in the enlightenment. There's no because seduction didn't exist before seventeen hundred is because that's when seduction narrative as we understand it was born and the book is about this very powerful strange and modern thing seduction narrative which was basically invented in the eighteen th century and the product of a response to a whole new wave of ideas about the human mind about what we now think of. Feminism will prototype eminem and also about the discovery of sexual freedom as part of the blue celebrating our freedom and the enlightenment and before then you had a situation where sexuality was heavily pleased. It was subject to legal and religious interrogation and you know in America. Of course you had The puritans were very big on sexual policing but also in and the rest of Europe as well and over the course of the eighteenth century that whole value system changed. By the end of the Eighteenth Century Sexual Freedom was for granted and to be cleared. Sexual Freedom for them was not the sexual freedom that we now cherish worry about. That really meant that women go to choose. Who They married. That's where the foundation sexual freedom was not explains basically every Jane austen novel for instance. That is the undependable. The plus. They're out of plenty other novels besides and then more generally a kind of increasingly faraji towards male sexuality in particular so you see the rise of the double standard would be in spectacularly bad behavior of the rates of London and Paris Venice. You say that there were three modes of thought that really gave rise to the modern seduction narrative liberalism materialism and feminism. Let's talk about liberalism for example. How does that bring us? But we consider to be seduction as it is today in John. Look Letter of colouration. He He makes us interesting comment race. Is that basically? Everyone is going to have to look after their own. Their prospects of their own souls so liberalism is no longer going to tell people how to live their lives and what to do and instead they're going to have to have their own moral accounting and if in the religious view if they'd be living badly that we dealt with in the off the world it's not gonNA dealt with by the government and the President and obviously if you think about it back then because up until that point they'd be bathing policing sexuality quite a lot and sexuality was once you're saying okay. Everyone's GonNa look after their own moral well-being and the government's going to step out of it. The second and third order consequence of that include a increasingly hands off attitude towards sexuality and basically people are left to make their own decisions and see how how ends up so. It's not that people sat around in the late seventeenth century and said we're going to invent liberalism and one that includes sexual freedom sexual freedom flowed quite logically from this this view that we're not going to try and make everyone lived where he wants them to and that's because they tried that in Seventeenth Century. Europe and being horrific bloodshed and wars and everything else and they wanted you to move beyond that how it's addiction flow from materialism again because we'll be philosophers like like Locke and hume. They were kind of operating on the assumption that we're living in a godless world and they they were very careful how they frame that and Voltaire as well. Then we're castle how. They framed that because of course you won't read out to be an atheist but once you get to the position where we're saying. Okay they're not angels and devils and there's no Holy Spirit brought in the world and instead it's just individuals with brains achieving reality once you make those leaps you can move from new Ford away from this moralistic view of sexuality and towards an idea and that's like psychological view of reality and that's seduction narrative dramatize is this internal monologue about reason about passionate about desire and not basically the entire genre of the novel possible. And if you read these early novels like Richardson who had discussed at some length. Those books now in the more or less unreadable right ABBA time now. If you're named Pamela centrally forced to read Samuel Richardson so you know it comes with the you've read it that I have read and Shamanov so yes so been down that unfortunate path. To what extent is the history of seduction also a history of power and power dynamics? One way of looking at it is that it's not a matter of about power. One way of looking at it is that in fact sexual freedom is empowering and people who practice sexual freedom or taking control of their lives and our free liberated individuals and not seeing a strain and food since the Enlightenment Henry Fielding Mary Wilson Kroft Plus He Shelley Mary Shelley Khatri at all the way up to the present where people you know saying well. People shouldn't be telling me how to live my life. So I'm not I'm not part of it. Basically rejects the idea that seduction is about power and it says actually selections about about freedom and choice but obviously power is a complex thing to discuss. But I root it's about coercion and seduction it about agency. And as soon as our collides with especially in situations where you know that sexual inequality economic inequality there's racial inequality very quickly. We can see how adoption courtship can shade into something daca. You go into issues around race and seduction and in particular America's laws and attitudes around race in the book talk about those parts of the book America in the nineteen. Th Century developed this very extensive body of state laws placing seduction and eventually America how to federal law. The man act which was essentially a seduction Laura in everything but name and in the American south. Clearly it wasn't just a question of the law there were lynchings and these lynchings were often justified by reference to alleged sexual assaults or you know interracial relationships happening not not as true all the way up to an until so. It's not just that was seduction literature. Racial is clearly that was a very serious and horrifying epidemic of racial violence. Often had a sexual subtext. But in the case of the laws the laws designed to empower kind of racial scrutiny of sexual relationships and the mind acts was used to in California was used to prosecute lots of Japanese immigrants who had interracial relationships in the northeast and the Midwest where there were lots of Jewish immigrants or Polish German immigrants. It was used to kind of put further scrutiny communities and then the story. I tell about Joe Johnson who was the first black heavyweight champion of the world it was used to basically hound this man who they couldn't lynch or there were several attempts to do so until they tried to to get him in the courts. Did You keep the book focused on heterosexual seduction or do you cover sex relationships as well? I mentioned overseeing the enlightenment though. Is this on Abrasion of sexual freedom. I should have a code of that. Which obviously it was a celebration of heterosexual. Freedom of sexual freedom was not tackled until the nineteen sixties and seventies and beyond. So I do keep a focus on on heterosexual relationships but the simple reason is that that's deduction narrative of itself was born about this new idea of celebrating sexual freedom without sexual freedom did not include the same sex and curious about the origin of this book. Like is this something that you began before you were at waterstones is the nonfiction or a one of the nonfiction buyers or did this kind of evolve. Why hasn't anyone written about this? And getting all these other books about these other things but there's no good history of seduction. The funniest seed of this book was what I was living in America just finished Grad School in DC. And I was just reading novels like dangerous liaisons and a hero of our time and I kind of kept on coming across this theme of the Seduction Narrative. And it just wouldn't go away and it kind of knew it away me for several years and I kind of this whole history of the seduction laws which I find well fascinating and weird and then of course in in our own time. A lot of things have happened. The rise of the pick up this online dating or the rest of it. I had this of intuition that there was a story And it was the story larger than just what was going on now that it had a history and yeah. I was pretty much convinced that every day. Open the newspaper and someone in Britain the book but they never did give it a go. Well this segment is going up on Valentine's Day so it feels appropriate to ask you about your favorites seduction narrative. Dangerous liaisons novel is is is absolutely amazing. I would recommend twenty one I. It's incredibly that it was actually written two centuries ago and there have been several great adaptions of it and they were to the nineteen eighty s and then those cruel intentions made out of it in the ninety s which I think is fantastic film still. I mentioned briefly a hero of our time by lemon of again. I think everyone should read that book. And it was an incredible and the Russians were really heavily influenced by the English narrative. They will read some Richardson. They'd read Palmer and Clarisa. Bridgeton is name checked in Eugene Oregon. And of course they wrote obsessed with Byron who was a kind of mythical seducer lifetime and so the whole Russian tradition wouldn't really exist without those two figures and he said in London. Tolkien postgame also tolstoy as well all right well. I guess plenty of people to read over Valentine's Day maybe not moves people's chosen activity and this particular day but if if you are alone with book those are the ones to pick up in addition to of course deduction clement. Thanks for being here

"Never could stop it surprised corporate geniuses having taken taking the blake they might yeah they might bucks a year. Thirty million bucks. Lana butter butter and you already tuned on that. Oh Wow so now. This is the poppas favorite. They went back in the end. The whole John's favorite. Yeah which they removed from the website by the way. Oh they did yeah I I don't exist rony sausage cheese. Let's break it down okay. It's a little dry by the crust in quite have that good rise in it You've got good distribution and toppings a little bit of sauce on the edge edges are not clean lean again. We're we're in the ballpark of an eight year. You are a tough pizza critic my friend well if the if it had a good rise to see it's it's a little flat because they're not managed. The dough cheers but see how flat it is right. You don't want your right now but when you get the point when you've done this means at times were you can kind of see it if you're gonNA have to fifty pizzas and thirty as you just eat a couple bites and you know what's going on. Are you pizza. Jesus Christ uh-huh are you the save your pizza. We're going to find out if the PA- If you're the Pizza Jesus Christ Richie Judas degree the richest Judas do. Hey Yes for all right of course but I actually agree you knew you nailed it. The the crust is too thin and affects the. I don't like the Cross Mesa drive. It's dry you wanNA keep that moisture. So what do you give that one. Because I didn't like that one because of the crowd I give it looks I that could get into an eight but again. They don't measure this. The problem is looks great but it doesn't taste that great longer. Measure the rise. Come on you you got to measure the rise in the best way to measure rises cheese pizza so if you get the cheese pizza right then you'll get all the other products right but they stop. They stopped this. How do you measure the rise is because you cut it and then you die sector like surgery and you see how much of that France Dole look and so but what affects the dough? What what happens if in the morning you go to make the dough not getting that rise than those other two green? What do you do? It's not warm enough Or the oven. Settings things are not correct you got to tinker you gotta tinker but we have a management system in place to make sure that that process happens correctly but what gets measured gets done mhm you know you what you inspect is what you expect right. They stop this. This is a problem. Huge problem huge problem. Okay Okay see other pumped up here absolutely fundamental things in a pizza ingredients out to the edge ingredients in every bite no agreements. They're known gradients. There were game. We're back to the desert. Yeah that's that when I'm having a huge problem with this area that product is not not. That's not as bad as as simple as some of these other ones. But you're see you're on your way to is. You're you're on your way to this us with this disaster disaster. You're getting close right now. Let's go let's the rise this stores having a rise problem. They're not managing the dough and they're not at all because they're not inspect that's not up there. There's not up ten point ten point. Perfect Pizza Scale L.. went out the window when I left her friend. Richie Judas almost call him do you. Just what's his last name. Steve Steve Ritchie Judas. Richie that's not good not good. It's not good the rises all. So if you're at home you're not getting this with a good rise. You need to call the store names for new pizza. The Pizza Donaldson Pizza. Give Guarantee Washington. Papa John's no no guarantee ooh that looks a little better better. That's going to be an eight and a half pizza. Well we we gotta get a little rise if we had a little arise here. Then we're approaching now with pizza. This is going to be a little flat to the same store. I mean it's the same dull oven right disaster not a disaster just papa. John's when the Dole rises mixes with the sauce the when the yeast off the Sugar Secrete Co to co to the chemical racks mixes with the sauce. I gives our product that Zing If you don't have that chemical reaction with the doe the rise the dating in this price. Zing Zang is the capital P.. And Papa I think so yeah me too. It's not it doesn't take a piece. Lisa wonderbra little perfect cells and take a good piece of French bread. There's a huge difference. One has a good rise. One done this product doc. It's not the recipe of the show. I don't think they changed that too much even though they change it a little bit. It's the how they're managing the DOE. There's three things the to make a great product consistency. How you put the product together? Ten point scale in the ingredients now they have changed ingredients ingredients somewhat. They got rid of all Pizza University right. You could see yourself a pizza professor. I mean I just know what tastes good. Yeah Yeah I mean you know as my Farmer friends says Modesto. It's the food stupid you know. Most people have rocks tastebuds especially the corporate geniuses. They really don't care if it tastes face go to not care about stock price earnings. They don't really care about the people in the product but at the end of the day you know people can taste the difference or want to pay the difference. That's our loyal customer right and if you get it right they can tell the difference and they'll pay the difference. They don't eat the pizza. You know what I mean. They're they're up in their ivory towers and they don't eat the pizza. I think you're right. Unfortunately fortunately I think you're right. You need people that that love. Pizza with the manager of that store is the center of the universe the managers onto the universe Ma- center of the the universe. How they're the they're the you know the the glue that holds it all together? You know. They're the ones that builds great teams. They make a great pizza and they really make Papa. John's John's ago that was the treasurer of treat. So I mean what was your overall impression. I think the the presentation was good. But there's a real crust issue going on here it's it's an epidemic I would say It's on I would say it's the new de Corona virus of Papa. John's well you know Ray KROC said your qualities all these only as good as you're consistent saying right and what you saw. Here's bad habits right. But they're consistent and so you know you WanNa get the point where you're doing the right things things in a very consistent way so there's no surprises with the consumer but there was a lot of good with these pizzas. Hey agree but if you look these product two years ago versus Eighteen months versus twelve months every six months. If they don't measure it will continue to get worse to the point where than than your average score is a six and then you're dead. You're dead in the water dead when you were running everything. How frequently do you do? This kind of quality control Ila great a question the the how do you measure a million pizzas the day and the answer is you. Don't you measure seventy thousand a year and you poll and and so if you measured enough in union sent what gets measured gets done what gets rewarded gets repeated so we paid bonuses on doing doing this the right way and that's all been cut out on. Oh right so they don't get into bad. It's your diet or your exercise. You don't again the bad habit in a day you slowly over time getting a bad habit and what will happen if they don't measure this Then over time it will get worse than worse the point where you can't even recognize product from now. Is this that no but at least it's in the ballpark now. A few of those. There's other pieces that I showed you. You know that's death. What do you think about Domino's and pizza? I think they I think they do nice job. I mean I really do business for a reason. What do you think a little? I like to call them little seizures. I think for the the money they've got a good value. They use fresh back sauce. A good product And that's the thing with. We were talking earlier about no experience. I mean this is not like I mean they got Papa Johns Sandwiches Arby's well there's no really national roseby teens except rb did Taco Bell. There's no national chains the you know do tacos but Taco Bell Pizza. You've got four big players. They're all pretty good at what they do. And then you had another half the market. That's your independence which are really good guerrilla warfare. So I mean they're tough I'm going to do. Oh spot podcast this week with independent called Rocco's out of New York they're based in DC. But they're coming from New York. And I mean the guy's a street fire I mean those is business business. I mean he's GonNa get you so much more competitive Hyper Yeah it's it's tough you gotta be really really good to be successful at that The pizza delivery business. And you know you keep seeing these little chinks in the armor. Those little things are going to end up to the big bad chinks well. We've pretty much said it all Papa John. We've eaten pizza we've talked pizza. We've talked pizza. Conspiracies could mean what what stone is left unturned. What are we what what's left? Is there anything you WANNA add. Is there anything that I should've asked you did it. I mean there's a lot lot INS and outs here. Is there anything you want to say to the people the fine people of the world and by the way I do WanNa say actually just ask you a question. I'll let you answer trip. We reached out to Papa John Years ago because we are. We've sold I. I like to say I sold more Papa. John's pizzas and Peyton Manning. I don't I don't follow football's balls the guy who will pay pains of great hockey player. I've sold more pizzas. It says the Peyton Manning. My dietitian was adamant only coming on the show off. That's the guy back. Yes yeah adamant that. Come on this eight years ago. Oh and I said I said why I had my agent at the time reach out I says. Why can't we get a deal with Papa? I mean you know it's so interesting so what happened. Well you know it's like like I mean somebody and they go you know I think I think I'm crazy. I think I'm losing my mind. I just you know and then you you meet. Somebody says I'm not crazy you know. I'm not crazy well. The person thinks they're not crazy. The people that think they're crazy they're crazy this self righteous. Oh John can't go on that show to eleven ethan. All my gosh you know we're so self righteous. Our words are perfect and our behaviors of perfect. Those are the people that are doing things behind the scenes. Dangerous dangers that their their their behavior behind the scenes with scare the Stripe Hambrecht coon. Would you forgot got to ask me about graduating college in three years I I totally forgot. Eight years in the making none other than Papa. John Himself and the studio welcome and thank you. Well thank you thank you so I mean I'm a I'm frankly I can't believe I'm sitting certain across from me right now. The field is mutual. So you had mentioned to me that you you had thought of reaching out to me but pop the Papa John Corey directors corporate. We're not we're not savvy. I've been wanting to talk with you for eight years. You're hard to get hold of frankly but I don't know but I think they're just a little more conservative. I've always thought this would be a lot of fun. I hope I was right. Coming into you'd be it's GonNa be it's GonNa be a great it's going to be a journey Well now that you're you're no longer beholden hold into corporate. So are you in a way. Is this a big middle finger to them. Now that we're doing this No not at all. I'm probably Papa. John's the biggest fan. I'm a even now. I Love Pizza and I love people and the people at Papa. John's they're the ones that made the company great. You know you you bill. Five thousand stores out a broom closet and you got to do that with great people but no franchisees. I love them ploys. I Love Them. And I'm their the biggest fans. We love the Franchisees. We hate the board of directors right but the words in your mouth. I mean I'll I I won't put the words in your mouth but I'll say it for all here. Those sons of bitches are they but they gotta be scared that you're on here now. I mean you got documents with Pizza Pie. Literally Literally Pie Charts charm with a pie Here's the right word. I you know we. We felt like the some decisions be made the last couple of years. We're not exactly in the best interests of the system There's nothing that's happened with Papa. John's last twenty. You're thirty months. That wasn't predictable. And it's not been good Would they be in said. They're struggling and We're hoping that things get it better. And they'll pull themselves out of this mess. Do you WANNA go back. Do you want to be the CEO on the directors. No I don't want to be. CEO You back on the board. No No oh Let's let it run. Its course that you would have. Let's see what's going to happen. I mean so far it's not been good The thing that scares me the most is. There's there's nobody on the board or really in a leadership that has any pizza experience. The pizza category there no experience and a very very dangerous dangerous Everybody wants to do pizza. Everybody thinks they want to be in the pizza business. But it's a it's a really a a different Animal I mean. It's it's tough I mean it's we really got to know the business when you say they're dangerous you do mean that they're what you mean by that. Well you know when you make good decisions. Good things happen and You know people prosper when you make bad decisions bad things happen and the last twenty four months for me to sit. Sit back and watch what's happened to the Franchisees and watch happened. The the employee's I got a call Friday. We had a young lady Robin Kennedy Been With the company twenty five years boo just out the door. Two weeks ago. five days before Christmas. Give or take a rob porter been with the company. Twenty eight years boom out the door notice so when you're trying to build a culture because we're really not in the pizza business work more in the people business so when you're trying to build a culture that really promotes creativity and ownership In Pride And you do things like that. It kind of runs counter productive There's so much ground to talk to cover. We've got the pizza conspiracy. We've got got the media company that apparently extorted you and the company But let me start from the top do do I call you papa. What do people call you papa? What about your friends and family do they call you? Papa yes everyone calls you papa. Yes and so when you. When did you become papa? That was interesting because we started doing the ads. Chicken War Spurs Popeyes Sales

"Let's start with the restaurant. Industry and in particular restaurant brands international which is the decidedly unsexy name of the parent company of Burger King. Popeye's and Tim Hortons Fortensky fourth quarter profits and revenue for restaurant brands slightly higher than expected and all of the credit one hundred percent of the credit. Go to Popeye's yeah. There's no question because when we talk about same store sales and I think it was either on this show on Motley fool money last week we're talking about AAA which put up same store sales growth of thirteen percent and I said what most restaurants would kill for that. Can I interest you in same. Aim store sales growth of thirty eight percent. Yeah thirty eight percent that looks comical like when you look at the chart as you and I both did this morning owning. It looks ridiculous but now we know what that spicy chicken sandwiches worth well and if if you know if you listen to Ron and roses. Scathing adding scathing review it was not a good review. You wonder how many people are going to actually give that sandwich. Try Not I know I'm not I haven't tried it yet and I don't know that I actually will part of that is just because I'm probably too lazy in an overly like eating a lot of fast food but I do feel like this For for restaurant brains. This really does feel like they're McDonald's breakfast moment. I mean it was a little bit less I think it was a little bit less expected. I mean they they certainly planned this sandwich obviously I don't know that they even really expected the results that they're getting but you you take what you can get in this line of work because it's not always easy to come across and I think the big question for Restaurant Brands is candy. Sustain it because I mean yes they are diversified and then. They have have Popeye's in Tim. Hortons in Burger King. But this really is. I mean the the the growth is coming from this chicken sandwich and so the question is is is that sustainable and and we don't know that I mean this it's kind of like that greater investing lesson and no pun intended. But you're not looking to put all of your eggs in one basket in this case. You don't WanNa put all of your chicken sandwiches in one basket in. I think when you look at restaurant brands I mean. This really is a Burger King. Business First and foremost I mean Burger. King is responsible for close to seventy percents companies. Total revenue in Popeye's is actually the smallest revenue generator of the three but that said The laggard really his. Is Tim. Hortons and that to me is the bigger question because I. I don't have any doubt that they can continue to perform well with Popeye's even if the chicken sandwich doesn't bring this explosive growth going forward and it probably won't but it it'll probably do pretty well. It's been received well because a lot of people think it's really good The question for MEES. What are they going to do with Tim? Hortons because Tim Hortons is really. This is kind of like the Pizza Hut. This is like the conversation we had about yum brands where wear it was yet another quarter of KFC and Taco bell are doing just fine. Thank you very much and Pizza Hut. Just I'm almost speechless because I'm genuinely surprised that when Pizza Hut was handed the opportunity that they were of Papa. John's and all of the controversy around John Schnatter in the NFL deal and the NFL deal. They still can't make that concept concept work no. I think you probably could make the argument this point. Now that you know Tim Horton's could prep for a spin off in pizza. Hut could prep for a spin off. You put those two together you know what their ticker would be Chris L. A. G. Because those two together will lag the market for quarters in years to come in. I don't know why that is on the pizza. Hut Pizzas one of those things. I mean domino's recognized a while back. Hey listen we're not. We're not selling a lot of stuff because apparently our food in that great. So let's make good food in and for whatever reason Tim Hortons doesn't quite resonating as well and maybe it is. Maybe it is a geography thing. It's it's certainly not a brand that I think has much opportunity opportunity south of the border. Right I mean when when you bring that thing into the United States just don't think it's GonNa do What it could possibly do in Canada but the calms of minus four point point three percent? Now we'll say management attributed some of that to their rewards program. They're essentially investing a lot in this rewards program to stoke traffic bring people back in in and I appreciate that that makes sense. We see a lot of these restaurants. Do it and and starbucks I think is one of the companies out there who really wrote wrote the book on how to do it. Well a Tim Hortons. Maybe these are. Just some of the lumps that come with investing in that a but I it's it's taking a little a bit of a hit in the short run for. Hopefully it'll more long term sustainability that remains to be seen whether it's really gonNA work out. I'm not that optimistic. Whereas I feel like with Burger working at Popeye's there is a more universal geographical reach where people people are going to probably flocked to those brands a little bit more consistently So for me. Burger King and Popeye's strength their. Tim Hortons a lot of questions. They're going to continue to make investments the rewards program but I mean this is a company that has some big aspirations with somewhere in the neighborhood. Twenty th at twenty seven thousand total restaurants. Today they're aim is is for forty thousand restaurants in the next eight to ten years in so you got to believe that most of that is going to come on the Burger King Popeye's side and and and it doesn't We very well may see them make another acquisition. Bring another brand under their umbrella so to speak that remains to be seen but yeah I mean for all of the success. That Popeye's has had burger king. I get it Tim Hortons is the real big question mark and I don't know what they do to fix that to to go go back to something you said earlier regarding Ken. Popeye sustain this. No no anyone. Who's looking at this thinking boy? Can they do this every quarter no there. You'd you'd like to see maybe not thirty percent growth but you'd like to see given the comstock. They had a year ago. Then yeah you'd like to see some double double digit growth. But when we get to twelve months from now honestly if they can do. Single low single digit growth off of thirty eight percent. COP bumped than fantastic. I think the other restaurant that has to be looking very closely at this. Is McDonald's and Chris Kempinski. Who's been CEO for? Maybe almost three months. Now it's going to be interesting to see where they go with their chicken chicken sandwich and what they're able to do with well we. We have gotten some boots on the ground research on that already and apparently they've got some work to do on that on that front. I mean that's a really competitive space. I mean who would have figured we'd be sitting here just shining such a light on the chicken sandwich. I mean this really has become front and Center for the Quick Quick Service Restaurant Industry. Hasn't I mean but you know the the business opportunity for McDonald's and everyone else who's not chick-fil-a is the chick-fil-a is closed on Sundays Sundays. Yeah Yeah you can get just you know. You don't need to get all of their business. You just need to get some of their biggest need some of it and and and again I think. Go to your point about the chicken sandwich with Popeye's no it's not sustainable but it seems to be a good product wrong grosses reviews. Be Damned. I I do think that it would be really neat to see them. Come up with something like that. For the Burger. King side of the business that would be extremely meaningful because again a- as great of a success as the chicken sandwich with Popeye's has been it's still the smallest part of the business in that has to be taken into consideration ration-. This is a burger king story first and foremost so I bet you management is in a room somewhere trying to figure out. How do we capture the lightning in a bottle? Four Burger King and maybe they thought the impossible opera had that Had that potential doesn't seem like it's Gonna I mean and I don't know what it is but it does seem like no matter what it's going to revolve around chicken in some way shape or form.

Domino's climbs despite earnings and revenue miss

"We're going to start with Domino's pizza third quarter profits and revenue came in lower than expected they cut their revenue guidance why is the stock up four percent this was not a this is a company that has I'm so well for so long this was not a great quarter and anytime you're cutting revenue guidance that's that doesn't go in the plus column so it's interesting you say that because the last I looked at the stock it was actually down so it must have rebounded for reasons unbeknownst to me this is like a personal to one for me I know we're not supposed to get him ocean about our stocks but I've been with this company both professionally and personally no really time for a decade and what what a wonderful story they really did everything you would wanNA company to do right Everything from being honest about the menu and revamping the choices too Oh embracing the digital world and and just great leadership over the years and the stock reacted I mean really great formats but now lately we're seeing through no fault of their own competition come in to to play and it's the folks like Uber eats endure dash in let's mates grandpa those guys and so what do you do when you're doing everything right and through no fault of euro and something comes into shock the system and either disarray intermediates or disrupts what you've been doing pretty darn well and so I actually feel bad even though you're not supposed to get emotional about your stocks I feel bad that this is impacting domino's business and it is and it will continue to do so because pizza and perhaps Chinese food is not the only game in town now when you WanNa get food delivered and that really will impact the business I feel like it's almost like a new normal the company will continue to do well they will continue to innovate can you to make pizza that I don't think is amazing but that people like it's just not going to be the the robust growth that they had over the last let's call it three six years because competition has come in I think the growth is goes back even before that and then th the person leading all that was Patrick Doyle and did a phenomenal final job over really the past decade as you said starting with the whole campaign where they came out and basically said Yeah Pizza's not that good we're gonNA work to make it under the digital revolution embracing all of that Patrick Doyle's no longer running the company rich allison took over in July doc it's early days for him as a CEO but it's off to a great start and and this is probably a little unfair but still no fun if you're if you're it's the combination of it's really tough act to follow because oil did an mazing job leaving leading this company as you said and maybe doyle that's part of his brilliant is deciding to leave at the right time but the next couple of quarters if they look like this where it's yes we're growing same store sales quarter over quarter year-over-year but not to the degree that we didn't have passed we're doing good not great then rich allison first year is probably going to be frowned upon yeah and looking into my crystal ball I think that is what we're going to see in fact the company is kind of telling us that with it with their guidance they replaced their three to five year forecast with the shorter term outlook. I guess you know kind of saying we it's harder for us to actually look out that far so we're GONNA WE'RE GONNA look out next two to three years but they've they've reigned in their growth there's going to look at too have percents same store sales in the next two to three years rather than three to six over the longer term so there signaling to us that the writing is on wall competition is real and that will impact numbers is two point four percent US ourselves which they just did this quarter is that a bad that's not a bad number it's just not as good as it was and the looks like the days of the four or five or six percent same store sales numbers could be behind them unless they come pull a rabbit out of a hat and come up with something that's pretty exciting and what those things usually are promotion will for example they offered half off online orders for a week in August they lost a twenty percent offer for late night orders in September you can do do that but what that ends up doing is impacting your margins because you're you're making less per pizza per unit of food that impacts your margins that impacts your profitability so you might get a boost in revenue but it'll be less profitable revenue per dollar it's interesting that a lot of the talk and I I think you're right in this regard is about the expanded competition in the world of anything can be delivered Jordache Uber et Cetera that being said Charleston also has the misfortune of taking the top job at domino's at a time when you're too of Pizza Hut's sponsorship with the NFL kick it's an Papa John's maybe turning the corner when maybe is the key over the next six months it'll be interesting to watch those two as betters and this whole issue of third party delivery where domino's continues to toe the line and say look we don't think the economics work that's why we're not doing it it'll be interesting to see six to twelve months from now if they're holding the line on that and in fact it works out for them or decide to maybe strike a deal with someone and then they can't fight the tide yet remains to be seen I have a feeling the answer is no but we'll see you know companies like McDonalds I think McDonald's might be the number one uber eats brand and I guess it's not surprising it's cheap you know I guess good if you like that kind of thing and and and people just want their their burgers and fries and and but again there are so many offerings how you want barbecue barbecue you want Indian food to get into you have anything you want so it has really changed the game it would be complete Lee surprising if that didn't take a bite out of market share or revenue from companies like like the traditional pizza companies so we'll have to see what the new normal is and and what stock price makes sense for the new normal the stock on the face of it is not necessarily expensive here even with the reduced insist turned twenty three times forward earnings look at Papa John's which is forty two times Papas struggling obviously stubborn values cummings forty two times forward earnings starbucks coming in the during those hearings are depressed so that you know that's Kinda why and we'll see if starboard can the ship there they have a great track record I wouldn't sleep on them they're going to get stuff done but the twenty three times of of Domino's is more in line with McDonald's twenty five times on the other end of the of the coin together at Tripoli that's over fifty times that that's pretty expensive here so not such an expensive stock but it's hard to get excited about a company that is signaling to you that weaknesses coming

"It's been a rough week for papa john that's right papa john you know of of papa john's fame know the guy who says the following gradients better pizza papa john's so we're not gonna really hear his voice anymore apparently papa john's is is all but removing papa john entirely from their pizza operation as because he's stepped down last week as ceo or chairman i guess what he has shifted to and that's related to the fact that he was on a a call wherein he referenced he was on a public relations call with a pr firm and they were disgusting crisis public communications how do you handle it and he mentioned on the call while colonel sanders the actual colonel sanders used the n word and everything was fine and he didn't use the phrase the n word he just said it out loud but to give you context he was using an example of somebody else using a racial slur and surviving their scandal he wasn't using it in a pejorative way that nuance has been completely lost on everyone is covered this i can't tell you how many headlines i've seen that just involve him just papa john uses n word and has to step down i mean that doesn't tell you anything no it doesn't it doesn't tell you anything yet that's how much of the coverage has been and now he is being just you know run out of town for all of this events it's amazing that this guy goes from doing these commercials seen in front of tens of millions of people nfl broadcast super bowl with peyton manning saying that called iconic sign off as far as the papa john's slogan but but it became very familiar in many livingrooms particularly nfl fans and now even the university of kentucky which houses the john ash as john h schnatter institute for the study of free enterprise said they were no longer use his name the quoting we appreciate mr statiners understanding that his unacceptable languages contrary to the values of the university of kentucky so now not only is he never gonna work again in any capacity but he's being wiped out of history basically for something here is to your point it it wasn't set into militias just like i remember the separate jeffrey lord was cnn remember yes it was media matters right and he he made a nazi salute a reference to the head of media matters to make a point he was saying the media media matters was acting fascist so he points out to them he says sig high and response to them he tweets that and then he gets fired by cnn he was fired on his way from pennsylvania is in the back of a car and he got a call to the driver gets a call the turn the car around because he had been fired up one last thing there's a whole bunch of people that are following in line with the university of louisville as you said the new york yankees said on friday they were ending their relationship with papa john's the miami marlins had previously signal that they were ending their relationship the nfl's atlanta falcons in atlanta united of major league soccer said they're suspending partnerships papa john's itself is removing images of schnatter from all of their marketing materials this person is being raised from history for exactly what i explained to you using the example of somebody else saying something racist in a phone call about how to deal with crisis pr communications and by the way whoever he was talking to did him a disservice by instantly leaking all of this to the press and this goes back to you mentioned jeffrey lord we talk about papa john but let's transpose it to all of political coverage all of media coverage cultural coverage you have you have scarlett johansson being taken off of a movie because she wasn't actually transgender trying to play a transgender person all of this is the death of nuance we've decided what what you see from reporting generally and broadly is ignoring nuance entirely where what are the details of the story what actually happened what's the context with which we should understand this story and it's all been suspended in favor of political activism if i can flatten this story into its most two dimensional explanation and i could just tell you what the buzzwords are that's enough and i can destroy papa john if i want to and i can destroy scarlett johansson movie career if i want to all i have to do is tell you two or three things and then get rid of the.

"Okay papa john's pizza big nfl sponsor john schnatter is the chairman there and he got in a little bit of trouble because he didn't like the athletes in the nfl taken a knee for the anthem that's where it started so schnatter hired an outfit called the laundry service to improve his image in the image of papa john's and in a call they were role playing what do you do what do you say when you're confronted with all these things and schnatter used the n word in the call not accusing anybody of that or demeaning blacks he used it in a sense of well colonel sanders used the inward and nothing happened to him but he didn't say n word he said the work and so that call has now gone public and schnatter had to resign here's the importance of the story never use that word never use it in any kind of context anywhere anytime just don't use it you can't you can't and even if you black though us i mean the black rappers do it all ties ridiculous don't use the word and there are a few other words just don't use them to never gonna win doesn't matter what happened as a matter what the context is we actually investigated the kentucky fried chicken then we find anybody using that word kfc could find any any report of that so schnatter was misinformed now he's paid for it.

"And when you talk about papa john's pizza even know there is a shot behind it yes there is he is the founder and as of yesterday he was chairman of the board of the pizza company that he founded and the reason he's no longer chairman of the board is because of a what i want to call it a training session a pr conference call that went horribly wrong we have to back up a little bit papa john i'm just gonna call him papa john because i like that some john got himself into some trouble last year when he weighed into the middle of the anthem protests the nfl he berated the nfl said pizza sales were down and this is the other equated it all to this and got himself in a bit of trouble okay just a little in by couple i mean people that own stock in the company and have money on it don't like it when you're ceo's out making declarative statements and or taking sides and things where there isn't a big win right okay so what they do is this was just a couple of weeks ago what this all starts from a very selfserving but but in place of good we're gonna have we're going to get a pr company like one of these crisis management things right and we are going to do some role playing scenarios with papa john so it's a conference call imagine there's bunch of people on it and we're going to coach we're going to educate you on how better to answer questions when people ask you some of these provocative questions when you think of how what's a better way to deal with it okay so there's nothing inherently wrong with that basically what they're trying to do is stop being yourself and start being somebody that represents the company right well he couldn't stop from being himself apparently new so the conference call was set up and they're doing this role playing exercise to help papa john deal with racially sensitive situations okay so keep in mind last year after he jumped into the nfl thing he had to step down to ceo but he still chairman of the board all right still had a job according to forbes magazine which report on this and john has confirmed it is an accurate report yes he was asked how he would distance himself from racist groups he asked how he could distance himself from racist groups online he responded by downplaying the significance of his nfl statement the previous one and said colonel sanders called blacks n n word he did not say and where he used the word and complained the colonel sanders never faced the public backlash so he's in a role playing exercise asked about how to deal with racially sensitive issues and uses the n word and says how come colonel sanders said it and he didn't get in trouble for it what person born in this century born last century actually asked that question you know like why does he feel i that's what i don't understand about people who say something like that then they get in trouble and they're like but he could do it it's like that's like telling your mom what about what about that but what about that well what about what aboutism is not an answer and it's not an excuse at it is a deflection what about is what about what about what about what about what about what about no we're talking about you john we're talking about who you are negatively affecting papa john's stock price and we're talking about how you still don't get it because i think here's one of the things that comes out of it so he's he's he's been removed he's he's out yeah complained that colonel sanders called blacks the n word without facing public backlash he also reportedly said the growing up in indiana people used to drag african americans from trucks until they died schneider confirmed that the incident to forbes acknowledging that he did use inappropriate hurtful language adding that regardless of the context i apologize simply stated racism has no place in our society but after backlash online chatter was forced to give up his seat at the university of louisville and on wednesday the company he started announced accepted his resignation as chairman of the board so i can acknowledge that if you're in some sort of a training thing and you're doing role playing okay you might have to play the other side but that doesn't appear to be what.

"Michael religious known by joy blackened no show tony all right julie got terms wow on stupid papa john is now you might pizza and you might enjoy food i love papa john's pizza papa john himself not the greatest kind the world he may know pizza but that i he made these comments about how the sales of papa john's were declining and he blamed the nfl national anthem controversy for it remember that so he was the four was the ceo at that time he resigned and then he was on he was chairman of the board that's kind of like a silent position you're still in charge he resigned from that this week after the word got out that he used a racial slur during a conference call this is exactly what happened if you if you really want to know he was this was back in may but the report just came out and he just confirmed it so this is back in may he was on a conference call with a marketing agency the marketing agencies job was to clean up the public relations mess that papa john had caused the phone call was a role playing ex to help papa john avoid future public relations messes in other words training on how to answer questions of the media asked you if they ask you this you say this campaign campaign managers like what you wanna do so they were role playing with him and during the conference call which was being recorded because that's what they do yes sources say idiot papa john tried to downplay his nfl comments by saying and i quote will colonel sanders of kentucky fried chicken called blacks n words and never faced blacklash a backlash for it what he said during the call of course he said he didn't say edwards he said the real word still the media agency that was helped marketing helping immediately said yeah you don't wanna see you wanna see that if you were asked right in the marketing agency after hanging up the phone said maybe we shouldn't work with him anymore and they didn't and that's how the story that sounds like he doesn't get it right logistics why he's allowed to say this and i can't say you're comparing apples and oranges but it's really bad now to be fair papa john himself owned up to this he said i used inappropriate hurtful language during a media training session and that is true regardless of the context i apologize he was trying to make a point about racism he said simply says his papa john simply stated racism has no place in our society so it's not like he's racist i don't think he's a racist he didn't call someone that nino he's he was using a reference he's just an idiot yup but now when it comes to be so that's what papa john's said if you were curious that made him step down by not ever order papa john's again i love papa john's chickfila had like lol yes they did make this right and i'm joking when i say this light lighten up a little bit someone needs to go on social media just go free pizza all day today right for everybody free pizza for anyone who felt offended yes which everybody right so then if you get your free pizza you really can't complain about what happened anymore plus he's even on the board anymore do something papa john's shares fell five point nine percent yesterday after they confirmed that report so i look at why people thursday let's get to that when we come back we would normally be playing a song that you probably hear a little too much of you in a four shawn mendez so instead of that we're going to play one of the following two throwback classics you have to design will it be this one.

"That is the nationwide number here on the program onto the papa john situation and wow did papa john get himself into into another pizza pickle here if you remember he got into a an issue with the nfl on the nfl players and the whole commentary he had and position on taking a knee well the latest now is they had a pr firm apparently working with them to try to clean up that mess when another man mess developed while they were trying to fix that now this goes back a couple of months the story is just coming out now and this is according to a story from forbes magazine yeah the the business publication forbes and it is alleged that papa john john schnatter you've seen them in the papa john's pizza commercials for many many years it is alleged that john schnatter papa john dropped the n word while he was in this this conference call including this this pr think tank group that was trying to help the company with a previous issue it was you know how to how to fix it and had to rectify and navigate some of the bad pr that papa john's had taken on now the conference call where he allegedly used the n word was back in may so here we are what july so this is a couple of months back and this again was after he stepped down as you remember he was the the the ceo also papa john's so he's now the chairman but papa john john schnatter he he stepped down from the ceo position because of the way he had handled his nfl comments and and you know the protests regarding police brutality and that was the whole issue so what happened what what was the context of papa john allegedly using the n word well wow he allegedly said colonel sanders called blacks and n word colonel sanders called blacks the n word but he said that he said the actual word and this was while talking about kentucky fried chicken that they never took on any backlash because of colonel sanders slurs now did the papa john's did he come out and overtly coal black people he didn't but the lack of sensitivity or trying to justify you know colonel harland sanders whatever i was even i don't even think he was a colonel what was this deal is a is a businessman that was called kernel but i just don't think that papa john you compare a guy who was born i think it like eighteen ninety died at the age of ninety back in in nineteen eighty i just don't think that you can then apply hey well colonel sanders use the n word he called black people the n word back in you know wherever was the thirties the forties the fifty i a guy from kentucky from eighteen ninety i'm not saying it's right because the the n word is deplorable but i mean papa john's trente have some attempted moral equivalence well hey i'm i'm not using the edward colonel sanders dead and why why are they going to be back i mean that's a really really crappy example but then he actually said allegedly the n word during the conference call so now there's this gigantic backlash today as this story has come out the marketing company or the pr folks that were trying to help them they quit so they walked off the job they were trying to help with the with any backlash from the previous position and then they quit papa john's put out a statement and said papa john's condemns racism and any insensitive language no matter the situation or setting we take great pride in the diversity of the papa john's family through diversity and inclusion it's an area will continue to strive to do better so that was the that was the statement from papa john's oh wow looks like croatia has just scored a goal against england oh it's croatia to england one they went into overtime if you're watching world cup and again i'm more into soccer because my daughter is big soccer player so wow so what they're second is a fifteen minute overtime and croatia has just scored it is now two to one so but i'm on an expert on the rules so do they finish out the fifteen minutes and then if it's tied up after overtimes i think they they go to pk's or penalty kicks but croatia is now.

"The situation or setting our company was built on a foundation of mutual respect and acceptance except when it's not which has been the you know in the last year matter as it's called papa john's named after this guy so you got to get rid of this guy john really yeah john schnatter sure papa john okay again i never thought of that i guess it could be he's the john and competition john and baba john so they might want to get like a larry larry pizza papa pizza's fine yeah genius pizza papa pizza in your mouth stopping marketing it's genius which is it's nice and bland you guys bar for genius is so freaking low we're taking so here's the over under how long before he's gone well if he i don't know i mean here's a airlines the nfl official sponsor after the kneeling thing yeah yeah so they pulled papa johns the official sponsor of the nfl papa john's pizza now this in and i'm sure this was to kind of get them back into the graces of the public and now we did this because he's doing a pr thing probably going to take him off he's off the board was a ceo or whatever you know and i don't know what that means a papa john's is not exactly you know exxon i mean it's a pizza place it could be gone in the chairman and he's still obviously the the john in papa john's you gotta they gotta change the name no you don't have to change them you just get rid of him yeah but i think most people i mean he's a literally every commercial manny everybody equates the pizza with john i know but what you need is black i'm joe that'd be great i think it's kind of weird they'd be like i'll just put a black guy and it'll make it all what all about that's how that's how they think that's up pr people think you know stupid way of thinking fire him and commercials got a fire him right that'd be funny though and it can go i know i don't look at talian you know you should have kevin hart or somebody yeah with god you guys not only is your is this your genius bar i am taking you know contributions if you want me to do your marketing why did you put your sunglasses she feels anyway so so that you know that's where that stands and i think one of the things is that you looking forward now with corporations is the i think they're going to try to get away and i it's smart from having a figurehead this is what about colonel sanders a wonderful person and that it had like ten people being colonel sanders so it's like one of them turned out to be a freaked no problem just shove another white guy in there and put a little goatee and women who is the one that would just did it there was a female colonel sanders the latest one the singer reba reba mcentire oh my god you did the last commercial why do i think that she has some bad things in her past maybe maybe not who is the woman that cook the right oh yeah hackery says she still out there she has her show but not as much she was out she was like one of the biggest faces on what was it the food network or is big face but yeah she was gone gone gone gone well anyway so that's that's gonna be but that's going to be i think in the future for marketing because a social media why do you have to have a per you really need a person thinking mcdonald's has never had a person but i mean like burger king doesn't have a person is taco bell doesn't have a person who well.
