"While some in Barbados felt this week's break with the royals was overdue, the country is far from the only one that's long held onto its colonial ties. Several Caribbean nations like Granada Jamaica and Saint Lucia still have Queen Elizabeth as their head of state. As do countries as geographically spread out as Canada, Australia and New Zealand. And Great Britain still has 14 overseas territories it directly controls. So, while the queen had to fully let go of one of the former British Empire's possessions this week, one old saying remains true. That the sun still never sets on the British Empire. How do we do? Want us to skim another topic from the week's news? Send us your suggestion to audio at the skim dot com. Speaking of escaping the royal family, yesterday, you arrived after the queen. I got lost. Why would you get lost? You've lived over the hill for years. That's a clip from the movie Spencer, starring Kristen Stewart. It tells the story of Princess Diana, but not the story you might be familiar with. It takes place over Christmas weekend at the sandringham estate and remains intensely focused on consistent over the course of the film. It's not like The Crown where you sort of see all the various politics. This is a very internal story. It's a ghost story where she is quite literally haunted by the ghost of Anne Boleyn and really threads these metaphors about the sort of transience of the past in the royal family and how it's so hard to escape. That's Esther zuckerman, a film critic for thrillist. She told us, Spencer was definitely on her watch list. I was really excited for Spencer to come out 'cause Pablo Lorraine is one of my favorite directors working today. And he had made Jackie, which is another really fascinating take on a very famous woman. He and screenwriter Stephen knight really apply almost a horror lens to the story of Princess Diana and Kristen Stewart is really incredible in it. What she's doing is she is not so much trying to sort of perfectly imitate die, but really sort of inhabit this feeling of claustrophobia that she might be experiencing. And she's obviously sort of nailing certain mannerisms the way her heads tilted and the voice, it seems there's nothing just me. Not you. Just me. Most of the film it's sort of this almost jazz interpretation of her. I mean, even the score is by Johnny Greenwood, is this really sort of jazzy sort of scream of a sport? I think even if you're not a royals obsessive, you'll be really interested in it. Kristen Stewart isn't the only Hollywood leading lady portraying an important female protagonist. There's also Gaga in the newly released House of Gucci. I don't consider myself a particularly ethical person. But I'm fair. House of Gucci, the story that it uses as its jumping off point is the story of how patrizia reggiani who married Marie Gucci and arid the Gucci fortune ended up having him murdered, essentially, that is, I guess, a spoiler for the movie a little bit, but not really, it's in the trailer. So it's this weird love story between these two people, but then it sort of tries to tell the story of the entire Gucci empire. It's directed by Ridley Scott, who obviously is a legend of film. Zuckerman said, despite an all star cast, this movie is basically carried by Lady Gaga. Here's the thing about House of Gucci. I think Lady Gaga is amazing in it. She is over the top certainly she's doing this thick Italian accent that she reportedly spent a lot of time using, even when they were not filming. But she's so magnetic on screen. It's a real sort of old fashioned Hollywood movie star performance. It's time to take out the trash. I'll go and follow their poison. They're an embarrassment to this company. The trouble with the movie is that you almost wanted to be more just the story of her and Mauricio played by Adam Driver. And then the film, which is almost three hours long, takes all these detours to sort of get into the business of Gucci. I've been the Gucci on my life. It's an empire. You can help the family. Gucci is not exciting, and everybody knows it. At least it's my name, sweetie. Sweetie. What Gucci, the fashion empire means there's this whole plot with Paolo Gucci played by Jared Leto in this sort of extreme performance that I can't recommend, but I did find funny possibly unintentionally. So it's a movie with flaws, but I will say if you are a fan of Lady Gaga's and even if you're not a fan of Lady Gaga, she is a true movie star actress. She is so compelling on screen that it's really worth it. And if you're thinking, what's up with these accents, zuckerman said, Twitter has been having a field day. Jared Leto is doing Mario as in the video game character. These are just more cops. I can't afford to get serious. And if you're just looking for some eye candy, her costumes are incredible. They're so good. While Stewart and Gaga play two hugely influential cultural icons, there's another movie that gives us some insight into the lives of two of the biggest stars in sports. Venus has Serena, called shake up this world. King Richard is a really interesting sort of take on the story directed by renardo Marcus queen. It does focus on the Williams sisters, by way of their father, Richard Williams, who is a dynamic fascinating very, very complicated person. I think one of my criticisms of the movie, which I wrote about on thrillist is that it is sort of trapped between being this very interesting character study of this sort of very complicated man and this sort of inspirational sports story about the rise of the Williams sisters. And I mean, I think what you learn about them is through sort of their father's intense training regimen and his sort of singular focus in making them into ton of stars and how he did that in spite of the racist institution of tennis where they were occupying. It really is more about the world they grew up in than it is about the girls themselves. So you sort of see them as kids and you see their drive. But it is more focused on their father and the way that their father sort of laid a path for them. So three movies, about four really important women, but if you only have time to see just one, for me, I'd probably be Spencer. I do think it's the biggest artistic achievement of any of these films. Boys? I want to take you home. Not moving from this spot. Until they.

"What's up open floor globe? I'm your host, Michael the pod pina and I'm joined on the other line by my good friends, Sports Illustrated staff writer, the Paolo Gucci of the podcast world, Rohan nadkarni, Rohan, how was your weekend? Oh, it was great. Mike just continuing to enjoy my time in South Florida, the hats are barely fitting these days because of the humidity. I watched when does I say you watched a movie that was actively bad and you just said, I'm gonna keep going. I love bad movies. Same. I don't know the last time. It's probably like every other movie I watch is bad. Okay, I see. Well, I have a recommendation for you then in a movie that I think you actually quite enjoy very much. And let me be clear, I think I enjoyed it as well. It's the 2010 film takers. Starring Idris Elba, Paul Walker, Michael Ely, Hayden Kristensen, putting Hayden Kristensen and Paul Walker in the same movie. And expecting us to believe that there are different characters and not related was a flex. It also stars two canceled legends in TI and Chris Brown. It was very uncomfortable watching them in this movie. Matt Dillon is in it. And what is this film? I have no idea what you're talking about. It's ostensibly a heist movie. The takers are a crew of I think it's 6 of them TI was in jail. It's of course he's got one last job for them. They were supposed to lay low for another year, but TI's got one last job. And it involves armored trucks, double crosses, and truly the most phoned in performances I've ever seen from a group of actors like, no one is trying. It's so uncomfortable. It's a good lots Angeles movie. I think you'll also enjoy someone who lived in Los Angeles. Just like a good, it's like one of those good, we understand the geography of Los Angeles movies. But other than that, it's so absurd. It's so bad. The acting is truly horrendous. And yeah, I watched the whole thing. I don't want us to get too sidetracked from talking basketball, but this is a pseudo movie podcast. I feel like so. This is a basketball podcast, it's a Trojan horse for movies, but yes, continue. Exactly, yeah. I watched heat last night for like the 7000. That's in my top 5 all time. I'm so glad to hear that you've seen heat, Rohan. I was nervous even bringing it up. I'm not gonna lie. No, that's an incredible revelation. He's one of the best movies ever made. I genuinely believe that..

"And it's fascinating when he really decides to turn it off. And a few times he actually doesn't go full out, which I also think really works, and possibly makes it like an actual performance as opposed to just, you know, a featured YouTube clip. But yeah, it is what you'd hope. Yeah, there is a kind of a quiet misery in some of the Aldo Gucci performance. And when you see what happens to his character over time, you see that it is not just all glamour and excess for him. So Jared Leto. In my lifespan as someone who has covered the world of movies, Jared Leto has really been through all of the phases of life. He has been a reclamation project from the world of television. He hasn't been considered one of the most beautiful people on earth. He has been considered a surprisingly talented actor. He has been considered an Academy Award winning actor. He has been considered one of the most annoying people on movie sets in the history of the industry. He's been considered the lead singer for 30 seconds to Mars your favorite band. And I have seen live, in fact, because I wrote a piece about Jared Leto almost ten years ago for grantland about how maybe he was a little bit misunderstood. Now, in that time, he went on to play the Joker and become deeply annoying. You may recall, he was nominated for a Golden Globe just this year, for a film called the little things. Remember that? He was the basically the best part of the little things. I wouldn't say he was the best of anything, but he was worthwhile. Well, I mean, just like, to the extent that that movie was working. To the extent that people were trying things. He was trying it. Yes. At a bare minimum, we know that Jared Leto is always going for it. He does not mail anything in, and he is very divisive. A movie like Blade Runner 2049, a lot of people saw his performance and were like, wow, he took me way out of this beautiful little dollhouse that you built by putting this jerk in this movie. In this movie, I believe that this is the single best use of his talents in the history of his career, because Paolo Gucci is one of the dumbest people that's ever appeared in a film. And his self delusion is transcendent to me. It is magnificent. And he is not putting on any heirs. He's like, I am literally doing Luigi. I do not care. I will be Luigi for two and a half hours. He's also fat. I believe in Luigi. You know? Like Luigi has a heart and a beautiful artist soul. Absolutely. He's like, he's not Super Mario. He's Luigi. He's the number two. You know, he's like, why do I have to play the back? Why can't I get time with princess peach? You can feel that agony from him. And I loved it. I thought it was I laughed at almost everything he said. Your mileage is really going to vary on this one. If someone comes out of this movie and they're like, that guy is an idiot and I hated this movie. I understand what did you guys think? You go first, man. Well, I just kind of reclaimed some space for Jordan catalano. You know? Can we just take a moment? You know, for my childhood and many other people's childhood and be like, that was like one, Jared Leto. But post Jordan catalano, I'm with you..

"It's intentional and transcendent. And I just, let's be real, if you don't want to see Lady Gaga and Adam Driver swanning around Italy in like clothes, then you and I are not alike. And perhaps this movie is not for you. But we are not the same. But this movie was for me. See, what'd you think? You're a longtime chronicler of the works of Ridley Scott. What do you make of passive Gucci? You know how some people say they go to action movies and they're just like, hey, I just want to, I just want to see the explosions. Yeah. Gucci's in action movie, but the explosions is acting. Yes. I just wanted to see the acting and there's so much acting. There's mannered, subtle acting. There is absolutely like basque region, beautiful ham that you can just scrape off the bone with a Swiss Army knife. There is like very cultured black forest ham that you get. You're like, it is absolutely unbelievable. The spread they put out and they just say, dive in, tuck your tie in, maybe put a bib on, but dive into the feast of performances. So I did not really know anything about this story. I have not followed the Gucci family, the Gucci fashion labels, history at all. And this is in many ways this was a surprising story to me. We're talking a lot about, I think the surrounding, not quite campiness, but the excess that makes this such a fun movie, but I was also fortunate to not really know where the movie was going the whole time. So it kind of kept me on the line as a narrative moviegoing experience. Just briefly for the listeners since they have likely not seen this movie by the time we're doing this. So the movie follows protrusa, who is the ambitious wife of maurizio Gucci, patrizia is played by Gaga, Mauricio bay, Adam Driver. Patricia marries her way into this Italian luxury label, the family business is very appealing. For Mauricio, but he's also on the outside of it in some ways. He's attempting to become a lawyer. His father and his father's brother, rodolfo and Aldo played respectively by Jeremy Irons and Al Pacino, neither of whom are from Italy. They really run the company. And Patricia wants in on the company. She wants power. She wants Mauricio to have power. Surrounding them, his cousin, for his cousin, I should say, Paolo Gucci, played by Jared Leto, who we referenced earlier. There are a number of other talented actors in this film Salma Hayek appears as a psychic slash confident Jack Houston appears as a family lawyer..
