"Then it's Nani, like the names on this list are baffling to me. Players that have played at such a high level that could deal with pressure and miss a shot from a little over ten yards out. It is insane to me. But it needs to stop for the LA galaxy. Listen to their calendar, a very winnable calendar, and this is very important for the LA galaxy. You've got Vancouver away winnable. Colorado home, a team that you're fighting for that playoff spot with. San Jose away when a ball is a classical as well. RSI at home, the team you're literally chasing in that final playoff spot and in Houston away Houston's a dumpster fire. Like it's a very winnable calendar. You shouldn't be in this position where you're fighting and tooth and nail for every single point, but you are. Because of the missed opportunities. And they're not missed opportunities as we didn't take our chance as well. We didn't defend well. I couldn't put a spot kick in type of missed opportunity. All right, so the galaxy fighting for a playoff spot out in the Western Conference. You know who else is? The Portland timbers. It's the Caleb Porter bowl speaking of. Columbus. For the defending World Cup champions. U.S. soccer announcing that the national team will face off against Spain on October 11th. In pamplona. So another difficult road test, this one coming in just a few days. After the United States faces off against England at Wembley in what we know will be a sellout. So herc, the U.S. is the number one ranked team in the world. They are the defending World Cup champions. What are your expectations for the two games against England in Spain? To wins? It's very easy. My expectation is at least from everything you've told me is to show us that they are still the best team in the world. Two very difficult games in a way settings, settings that you don't necessarily find in the environment. You're going to play England, Euro champions. And then you're going to play Spain who happened to lose to England in the corners, but where four minutes away from actually winning that game. If not for an Ella tune equalizer about four minutes from the end of time, the force into overtime and then you know what happened. England took the rest. For a team that you maintain is still the best in the world, but its players, the majority of them didn't crack the top ten in the ESPN top 50 women's players in the world. And if you look at the short list of the women for the Ballon d'Or on the American side, you had Catalina macario, who's out with an ACL, you add Trinity Rodman, who's at an abysmal season with the Washington spirit. And Alex Morgan, who is of The Old Guard. So for a young team right now that's going to transition, I expect them according to you to show us

"Investment firm letter one have vanished from the company's public face the oligarchs have effectively been exiled from their own investment vehicle because of the sanctions by the UK in the EU Let's discuss this story How sanctions are really blowing up the world of private London money We're joined by Ben stupors our private equity and wealth reporter Ben good morning Why did you investigate this particular business And what does it tell us about the letter one and pamplona What are these companies at how they related And what does it all connected to Russian money Morning Caroline thanks for having me on Well to answer your first question why look at letter one Well this is a company that has more than 22 billion assets around the world including gas pipelines under the Baltic Sea and Spanish supermarkets It's a major investor that funding comes from some of the most I would say famous Russian billionaire namely Mikhail Friedman who was one of the sort of original oligarchs to emerge under Boris Yeltsin premiership of Russia And then pamplona capital based in based in Londoners is most of its funding has come over the years from letter one And the Russian billionaires behind it And they are very closely related so it's not a normal relationship between a billionaire giving money to a private equity company They let someone actually has made up most of its investments and actually there's even for example shares staff office space which has worked greatly until about the start of this year and things have obviously changed in the fallout from Ukraine war Yeah so when the sanctions started what happened I mean it shows some pretty big challenges for how to extricate London firms The pamplona capital initially said oh we're going to redeem the investments from lesser one In other words it gives money back to letter one in some way And when sanctions started to spread a little bit more to the billionaires behind letter one they actually stepped things up and said we're going to wind down every fund Every single fund that relates has ties to lesser one That is pretty complicated to be honest And in the meantime I think it's important to stress that the one itself has not been sanctioned and has taken really a lot of public effort to distance itself from the Russian billionaires behind it It's creating a lot of problems needs us to say Yeah absolutely So then I suppose what are the lessons from this for London Is it possible to separate investment funds from Russian cash I think that's actually one of the reasons why we picked out this story I think this is almost going to be the case study for that very question I think firstly what Pam planner capitalist saying there's the possibility of finding a buyer They could maybe sell the funds possibly they touted that idea But of course that begs the question you've got to find a buyer for these investments They've also said they could sell direct investment that they've got the investment across the globe It's a real global portfolio that they have Again you need to find a buyer So you're going to be reliant on someone waving not into sanctions But wading into the fallout from the Ukraine new trainer war and the fallout from that Most likely this is going to be a very drawn out process because then let's say you find a buyer Obviously begs the question of what are the regulators going to say about this Are they going to let this sort of deal go through Obviously both companies would hope so I think it's.

"Of myself. But then we're going to be hitting out into the bush and yeah, it'll be, it's going to be a pretty magical time. Are you connecting with some of your old friends that are in the safari world? I'll be seeing old friends and family a lot of them have had to flee a lot of them have had to leave Zimbabwe because of their complexities there. But there are some old die haunts that I'll be crossing pods with and tipping an adult beverage for sure. Sounds amazing. So it'll be this will be one of the curses and privileges of that you and I enjoy is loving our work. And so it's very easy to look up as I'm ashamed to say I looked up and realized I haven't taken a week off since September of 2019. Wow. I haven't taken the last time I took a week off. And it doesn't feel like it. I love what I do. So having said that, I've got integration weeks I have every quarter and so forth. It's just to actually completely step back like this. So this is coming back. And that's probably a little too much. So this is a good reset for me on a number of fronts. Nice. Nice. And then back to the Caribbean win. Then I'll be back there in January. End of January, probably. We've got the mastermind coming up in January. Probably. It is. 8th and 9th. 7th and 8th. Anyway, 7th and 8th in Scottsdale yeah. Yeah, so I'm crashing that party. And then probably end of January, I'll head back to the Caribbean. Awesome, man. You got an exciting life, dude. Sounds pretty amazing. And we're adding more adventure to that this year. Yeah. You and I are going to be the plan is to go to pamplona run with the bulls. I'm going straight from the Dominican Republic from a mission trip. I'm really sad this year. I'm not. This is going to be my first year going on this trip without Bryce can see he's actually going to be in college at that time, which is hard to believe. So I'll be going on that solo going directly from. Would you come to visit me before you go to the DR? I could definitely do that. That's right. So maybe Puerto Rico than the DR and then straight to pamplona. We'll wrap up, hopefully I can find a vegan version of running with the bulls where the bulls actually don't perish at the end of it. That's what I'm hoping for. But then yeah, we're hoping to scale some large mountains..

"And i don't think we'll have time to get through. But here's here's the direction we're going to bulls get angry when they see the color red and i don't know how many of us have heard that i sure have i've had a client or to have you wanted to run with the bulls in pamplona or who have and according to the american science guide bowls like other cattle are red green colorblind. So it doesn't really matter about red but the red is become more traditional or ceremonious but would actually triggers the bulls anger is movement of the cape. So i don't even how to into these so there's a thing how about that and i feel like this is one of those things. Where if somebody's telling you they're experience of running with the bulls in pamplona and it might not even be pamplona. Now that i'm saying it out loud in spain if you say hey gino. They don't actually see read. The you might not be invited back to the party for being honest. But i think it's a fun fact. Here's one that. I think is interesting goldfish. The myth is a goldfish. Only have a three second memory. They have a reputation of having bad memories and it turns out that that idea that they can only remember things for three seconds is a myth and not only has this been debunked by several studies. And there's what i think is funny is that i can click on this link. Several studies where people have spent a tremendous amount of time and research and trying to backup. or debunk. this myth. That goldfish have longer than a three second memory but some research even indicates the goldfish can have a memory span up to five months long. So that's the thing. I don't know if that's what i'm gonna say after each one of these. That's a thing i don't know if this gonna be when you catch very. Hey there's a thing. I don't think so but the number three this one is one that comes up in therapy. A fair amount and this is part of acceptance and commitment therapy. There was a piece that debunked this long ago there but the myth is that we only use ten percent of our brains. And i've even had people in my office said the other ninety percent is what we're going to tap into in the in the great beyond or or that type of thing and there are people that can make a really good logical argument about that but many people believe that humans only use ten percent of their brains. And it's even the plot line for this two thousand fourteen film. Lucy starring scarlett johansson. However that that one's also been debunked on several occasions is nothing but a myth neurologist. Barry gordon told the scientific american he said that humans use virtually every part of the brain and most of the brain is active. Almost all the time and he says for more of these misconceptions..

This summit with two heatwaves in france temperatures have soared to iran forty six degrees celsius or one hundred and fifteen fahrenheit in much of the country one of the responses water. Lots of us to drink and to swimming. But this is not without its dangers. As john lawrenson recounts in this postcard from france san gave me a and you had heard that name before but it was only driving out to that town on a scorching heatwave morning in the old low extinct volcanic hills of the ovarian that it clicked seen combat voire bottles below the road. We were driving along with alone with the name of that mineral water written in big white letters. And in the middle of the loan pavilion with people milling around it. Stop shouted my wife and we pulled off the road down at the spring with some empty bottles that were kicking around at the bottom of the car. We joins one of the happy swift moving queues of people with a slightly giddy. Look the people have when they getting something for nothing locals mostly who had developed a bad worst bring etiquette many come with crates of empty bottles to fill but when they go to the front of the queue they feel one bottle that went to the back again. The water was delicious naturally sparkling but with fine bubbles less aggressive phys than the bottle stuff you buy which has added. Co two sparkling water. That's where we were heading into the med- the rivera even we're swimming family. We swim in the morning. We swim in the evening and every so often when the waters particularly flat we do what we call the exploits and swim from one bay round the headland to the next bay a more back even on stormy days we go muck about waves so when the wind started to blow this year. We hit the water as we always do. There was no orange flag up beach. Flags like traffic lights green for go red for stop and our interest speed up or you might not make it before it goes red so there. We were bobbing around having an all right time on the edge of the water and after a while i had the idea questionable in retrospect to swim out a few strokes to where the waves were bigger and immediately found myself being swept out to sea. I swam towards the beach. As hard as i could. But i was going further and further out. I could see my wife increasingly terrified as she realized what was happening. Pierre my sixteen year old a strongest women me had understood quicker than anyone. He been out near where i was an had felt that current and he swam out towards me. I was exhausted and drinking a lot of water going under every time. Another wave crashed over my head. Most of our memories of visual. I now have a very powerful one. That is tactile hand pulling me towards the beach. I reckon another three minutes out there. And i would have been dead. The lifeguards arrived as supported by my wife and son was staggering. Back up the sand. They've been saving someone else. The lifeguards saved several dozen people on that day and on the following days well when the some was back and the waves had come down a bit on that second day when lots of people were in the water a fifty nine year old. Italian tourist drowned. This pamplona perhaps the most famous beach on the french rivera just a few minutes in one of the sinister looking black vans favored these days by the hospitality industry from central pay. What used to be called a watering hole for what used to be called the jet set but unbeknownst to just about everybody people drown here on a regular basis. So what should you do if you find yourself being pulled by riptide to woods watery grave wave with both hands if you manage that once. You've been seen to exactly as i didn't do go with the flow. Don't try to swim against the current conserve your energy beyond the breaking waves. It's easier to stay alive and easier for the lifeguards to save you all even.

Cougar that dad had ended up getting that shipped over because the simcoe couldn't fit the whole family. And it's like if dad wanted to take the whole family to like the mall who goes or whatever shit decided to make multiple trips. Why did we ship the cougar. Because spain to the us that car was such a high of a piece of shit when you saw it the cougar. This was nineteen eighty nine. The cougar was brand new. Nineteen eighty nine. Yeah as eighty seven cougar. Only two years old. Wow yeah so going up yet. No by the time you saw in the in the mid to late nineties. It was just the one this was four. I know it was for the bullfight. Because it maybe get the one thing that did perk my interest as a kid at the time was like oh who they're running the ball to get an exercise to get ready like oh then he gets to fight the matador and everything but what i didn't know and what i learned probably tire out. So that the matador doesn't get made up but what i did learn. Was that in spain date. I didn't know this as a kid. They kill the bill at the end. Whoa yeah it's not just like oh he outran the matador and he got the kabul goes back in the cage until next time maybe we'll know they stab swords and spears into the back hump of the ball as he goes by so what you see in the cartoons of bugs bunny and all his bullshit where they just move the move the the movement and the ball goes through and his. "Every single building downstairs had bars on the outside of the windows. bars bars. Like steel bars bolted to the house. And i thought to myself why. Why are the bars of the outside of the window. Like trying to keep people in their house. What the hell is going on like. This is kind of creepy little bit. Well this small town which unbeknownst to me as a little boy because And this only happened. Once dominancy that new prerequisite would say that. It was quiet morning. I was walking to the bus stop in the small spanish town now. There was only one time that the bus was going to show up and pick up any american kids that lived in the small town and it was only in one spot and it wasn't even kind of it was kind of in the center of town. Does that make like they kind of like. Oh we're going to take the bus stop in the center of town so all the kids would walk. It wasn't a big town right and all the kids would walk to the center of town and get picked up. So i'm stand there in the center of town. It's super quiet. There's no other kids around at this point. I think it's fucking saturday am i. Su- there's nine at school today. What am i doing here I'm just kinda like this for me. It's kind of creepy. You know coming. I've never nine the small spanish town. I don't speak spanish. Not sure what's going on. And then it was like all quiet and then in an instant or actually instant kind of very slowly like all of a sudden. Everyone's started coming outside. Not coming outside on the down. Low on the downstairs coming outside onto their onto their terraces on their tomatoes. Or whatever right. They're all looking down and then people someone people noticed me and he started screaming at me. And i don't speak spanish so i don't know what the hell they were saying. Rough translation was. Get out of the damn street. Kit what are you doing on the sidewalk. This is what the hell was your problem. Are you crazy. Yeah stupid american. I knew that that came out of their mouth. But like what are you doing. Oh my god. And so. I'm sandra i'm like what was happening. What's what's going on and a small quiet rumble starts. I'm like what the then what was happening right now. Like wiser like why did sound like thunder and is not even a single cloud in the sky and at one end of the street all whole bunch of spanish guys. Come running down wearing all white. Come running down. The street behind them is the town's one bowl yes a big black bowl. They missed the running of the bulls day. I was like isn't that implant. Pamplona isn't like france or italy or something is in italy. There has the running of spain. I don't think it was spain but this this this town decided he was going to be them so they. It wasn't like the running of the bulls like this running the running of that. We have one bowl. So it's the running of inaudible. So i see this as a little kid and i'm like holy shit. The bull got out not knowing that there's like a. It's like a thing to try to outrun this bowl and i'm like holy shit the bull got out okay. So you're right it's pamplona. Yeah i already know. I'm in that but that's in spain. It isn't spain. Okay yeah okay. I wasn't sure. I knew that. I'd six-pack usually. The running of the bulls is six spanish fighting bulls along with six dear. So you got a total of a dozen yet bowl stop. Okay you're there might. Here's the thing. I'm gonna say this there might have been another bull or two. There might have been two or three. I saw one. I saw what i was nine. I saw one. And then i turned around and i was like i was option. Run not towards them. It's like you know what i'm saying and small streets. The sidewalks are only like a foot half white. So am i like. And they're and they were at. This was nineteen new eighty nine and ninety so like the sidewalk was old spanish towns for the sidewalk cobblestone so it wasn't even like the sidewalk. You're thinking in your head right. So i'm like home home. God oh my god the pull the ball out and so i'm running scared trying scares and the guys. The guys in the white are jumping up onto the bars bars and grabbing the bars like trying to pull themselves up out of the way while this bowles trying to like horn them in the butthole late. It's you know. And they're running and then like when one tries to go after one than the other one would be like. Hey i'm right here. Come to me that he can. He would run so that like the bull. We get distracted like they kind of. They tried to not get maine. I only saw one boy again. Couldn't tell you if it was the running of the bulls or the reign of the we have won the ball Yeah so noble. I don't know what those spanish word for bull is but you know whole ran down the road. I'm running scared. I'm my thought process. Do i grab the bars and try to pull myself up not could happen. I already knew that. I'm like i'm going to get. I'll be the one to get spiked in the ass. I gonna take a horn to the butthole. I'm not no way it's gonna keep running. I'm so far. Outpacing the spanish guys. So i'm doing good fast. I sorta nance link without a battle. Why you taking off shoes. Like i've run faster without shoes. You cannot run bear. I don't have to outrun the bear. Just out run you exactly exactly faster than them. 3 Signs of Deviant Benzo Prescribing
"A group of French psychiatrist released two papers this month that looked at how often physicians prescribe benzodiazepines and hypnotic in ways that deviate from the guidelines. The result twenty to thirty percent of those prescriptions deviated, and the rate was even higher in chronic medical and psychiatric disorders, forty five to sixty eight percent. But what I found most useful in this paper was the definition of deviation based it on French guidelines, and whether you agree with them or not. I think it's aluminum for all of us to think about these guidelines, and how often were off the mark? Here are three qualities of deviant benzoate prescribing. One duration prescribing benzoate for longer than one month when used for sleep or longer than three months when used for anxiety. To half-life prescribing benzes with a half life longer than twenty hours in people who are over aged seventy, five or people who are over aged, sixty five, and have two or more active medical problems. Or over age, sixty five and taking five or more medications, so which bends does have a long half-life that would be die as a Pam Valium Kloner Pamplona. "Whether you're looking at Michelangelo's magnificent statue of David or you get caught up in a ruckus crowd at a street festival in Spain or even if you just listen to the wind whisper. What life was once like among the sun bleached ruins of the Mediterranean? Your travels can lift your spirit in many ways. Hi I'm Rick Steves in just a bit. We'll take a closer look at the world. Michelangelo lived in influence. Five hundred years ago and actor. David Suchet tells us how he retraced the route that Saint Paul traveled through the eastern Roman Empire. Nearly two thousand years ago. Let's start the hour with a look at how people in Spain honor the lives of important figures from their past. There are actually hundreds of national and regional saints in Spain. And you'll find that many of them get a festival that brings their communities out into the streets to celebrate to explain the role of Saint in the culture of Spain. We're joined now by tour guides or hate Roman from Madrid and Francisco Gloria from pump. Lona or Hey in Francisco. Happy Easter Thank. You thank you so. Spain is a Catholic country in in the church is a huge part of the political and spiritual past. To what extent is the Catholic Church? Still a big part of Spanish society. Today it is. I mean now. The government that we have now is very conservative and they relates a political issues with the church. Not Everybody is happy about that but still part of it and also the most of the celebrations in Spain national holidays. They advocated saints. Lady's name names. I think a lot how. How does the naming of children work compared to the Catholic faith? I mean you're or hey your Cisco do they have any with your parents. Passion for Saints a Whole Mike. As many Ms Francis Xavier because your middle name is executive because for some frantic savior was born in my town so and he was the first Jesuit Right. He was one of the founders of Jesuits Yep okay main signatures which is a very common name. Ignatius and Francisco Xavier. That's a common name where you come from pump loan and actually my name is the ACLU into English degeorge and is the only saint in the Catholic Church actually wasn't a saint also warrior that killed the Dragon Saint George killing the Dragon. Yeah it wasn't saying actually but so there are a lot of festivals when you travel in and almost all of them seem to be related to the church. Talk about a couple of the the great festivals in the Saints Days. That are important in your life in your travels Francisco I am from component the running of the Bulls on what we celebrate. The death of Seinfeld mean so. It's like huge huge celebration. That week starts July six hundred ends July fourteenth saint for me and I. You wouldn't even know who saint for me unless you went to. The running of the Bulls and pump. Lana developed comes from employees. They don't even know who he is attacked because everybody wears the red Kerchief around their neck and when people go to the running of the Bulls they wear this red neckerchiefs symbolism planet. We are under two hundred thousand people. I didn't know we. We welcome one million people and everybody's wearing white unread and nobody knows why like. Excuse me you do get excuse me. I'M A tour guide. I want to explain to you why. You're wearing this red handkerchief. That was the first person that was baptized employees and they cut his head for the recent. So what we represent the white outfit Represents Holiness and the Redmond nights the blood coming out of his neck so he was an early Christian. Pump Loner who was beheaded. Yes he was. We hit it. We say that he was beheaded any Pamplona although history tells us that he was beheaded in France. But Hey ho hey. From Madrid what festivals would impact a traveler when that we should know about quite Madrid? Not Maniacs you say but there is one very close which is Toledo the Corpus Christi is the big the there in Corpus Christi in Toledo is and that's the the corporate the body the body of Christ that's correct. Yeah and that's the Big Day in Toledo and they do bring some things to parade around. And he's part of a could be the equivalent of the beaches. Pelton SPAIN LIKELY. You have here states them. They're very conservative in there. That's interesting because in the United States We've got a region called the Bible Belt in Spain. Is there a region that would be the Bible belt get could be the political? Be One of them if you go around. Let's say like half Mouche from Madrid to the West from Madrid to the West Toledo Arbella. Salunke that part of your Browning what do you? What is your image of being? We'll have to think that we had the Muslim heritage Muslim heritage started to come down of it from the north down. Thanks Community Santos on James. Drake has just for the historic context. The Muslims came in and took over Spain and Portugal in from the eighth century until fourteen. Ninety two a good part of Spain was ruled by Muslim overlords. And then for centuries there was the RECON keystone reconquering has finally fourteen ninety two. The last Muslim was pushed out of Granada and back into Africa. What I make the difference that the Community Santiago okay. The origin was by the coast and it was the beginning of the Spanish reconquista. So this is the Camino Santiago. This is the big pilgrimage trail that cuts across from France all the way across north Spain the major city in the north west of Spain Santiago de Compostela. They'll go and How what's the historical roots for this pilgrimage? Because thousands and thousands of people make this high out there still do it people at the beginning they did it by the coast so those kingdoms those ancient kingdoms there the realize that whatever was going there were no Muslims so th would they decided to push it south and south and south and south until the Camino we know today so I am from the north in the north we barely have any Muslim heritage. We were more Christine. Must time before. But if you go down to under Lucia there you find. Churches generally built upon a mosque. Correct and mosque was built upon a church than they destroyed. If you go to civilian you see them at Nickerson Tarver. A Cathedral Tower actually was the minaret of the old mosque. So there's this layering of history. And what's very poignant to me? Is We hear about people. Being beheaded today in this struggle of fanatic Islam and Christians and so on but if you go to a church in southern Spain it's very common to see a man on a horse with a big sword cutting off the heads of Muslims and at the feet of the Horse. There's six or eight heads of beheaded Muslims as correct. Lose this man that is son James. The son teams we're representing three ways bishop as more slayer the more slayer so his. His nickname was saint. James the slater the more killer. Well enter the Moore's for the Muslims. Yeah most of our lives and today's politically incorrect. So we're beginning to cover those heads on the floor seriously. Some of those old statues and paintings are getting with put flowers well enough so you hide them so you hide you see a guy on a white horse with a sore but every time a Christian is just so disgusted by a Muslim fanatic. That cut off one of his people's heads we've got to remember. This is nothing new in history Spanish. I consider myself Catholic. We've been the worst ever I mean. We've inquisition the request. We have expelled. The Jews I mean with excuse of religion with Don's much bad. The inquisition is Sort of gift of Spain to the rest of Europe. What gave yeah. I poisoned gift. Would you describe the The inquisition you see the palace don't you out l. escorial that's right correct. What is the inquisition? Mean to to church history It's a sad episode. I mean this might personal opinion. Very site I mean also gave us practical thing. But it's a very very sad history. Every time I talk to them to my travelers about inquisition unites ties with Catholic moral and they kept going on.

The Basque Carnivals
"Let's start with a look at the Mardi Gras and Carnival celebrations going on in Basque country. The customs and street parties will vary from town to town one of the oldest cultures in Europe. The Basques include some interesting public festivities in the days leading up to the fasting period of length traditions. That sometimes go back further than anyone can remember for a peek at how they do carnival in Basque country. We're joined by Claire Noah. She's from Hess Barron in the French Basque country and a Gustin lives in San Sebastian. On the Spanish side of the border. Welcome Claire and Augustine. Thank you very much so first of all. You're both from best country. Claire who are the Basques just very briefly and the basket is one of the oldest civilization in Europe and we are divided on those two parts one in France in another Barton Spain and Augustine. Those the language of Basque people yes. We speak Basque language which we call Skater. Who Scatter I WANNA talk about. Carnival carnival basically is the blow out before lent that leads up to Holy Week and Easter. It goes way back to even pre Christian Times on trying to get through the winter and there's a hope for resurrection for new crops in the fields for the end of the hunger time and the darkest depths of winter. I think the meat was going to go bad. And they had to eat it. All or something or carnival. Carney is the word meat and that led up to forty days of denial lent and then Easter so we know Mardi Gras in New Orleans. That's basically fat Tuesday in French. And IT'S CARNIVAL TIME RIGHT. Turn tell me about carnival. Because it's a big deal in Basque country. A Gustin what is carnival in your perspective. As a person in Basque country we have to waste of Celebrating carnival the more more than Christian celebrations. There are more popular on the Spanish side on the more traditional Pagan celebrations. That you can find in the past country of France. The difference is the recent history. I mean this pagan celebrations were banned by the dictator Franco for thirty five years He banned the use of the language and all kind of Celebrations related to pass or and this was banned. Sue was probably lost the in that time. So let me get this straight. You've got Basque culture. Which is a lot of ways? The same in France and in Spain but carnival is a mix of Christian and pagan traditions. And when you see these crazy creatures jumping up and down in Europe in many cultures it's pre Christian and it's a way to integrate the the indigenous religion in ancient times with the Christian. The newer religion and Franco was allied very carefully with the Catholic Church in Spain. He didn't want any pagan influence in the Spanish Basque country so he said this is a Christian festival none of that Pagan stuff but in France they were more free to have let loose with the pagan craziness. Correct correct Franco considered himself the highest representation of the Catholic Church and turn the country into a religious state Now clear I would imagine in France. Then you have some pretty wild costumes when people dress up during carnival especially where the Pagans go crazy in the French side of the border. What is the carnival? Can you just were on radio but paint a picture for look like for me? It's colorful with many natural things so we will have flowers leaves and we will have ribbons. We will have a chilling chuck which is a small bells everywhere. So you have to hear the carnival and you have to say it's an explosion. Okay of joy. It's just a moment where you go out from last year and everything that went wrong and you wish something really good for the next one so you just have to explodes yourself and just let it go. Go out with your animal part of you. Let your animal free and you're inside and we all have this side in so we have just. This is the perfect moment just to and then you start again so you dress up. There's music there's staying up all night. What's going on in different places? You've got different carnivals into French part of the Basque country three provinces for example Nepali which is really famous. You've got cash Celtic. So those people are going from house to house every weekend before carnival low even after they go to each house. They had get to know the neighborhood. So it's kind of ritual and they'll go to every house they sing. They play music. They DANCE. They share several cups of wine. And then it's a big party the tired but it's it's really nice. This is so interesting because I've been going to the best country for a long time and I have to be honest. I feel there's more character and enthusiasm in Spain because the French Basques are more French to me. More controlled by Peres but here on carnival. You let that ask animal that when you hear Claire. Talking about that from the Spanish Basque side on Carnival do you relate to have an animal you're gonNA lose all And fortunately now we have just a couple of little towns in the north of Navarro which are having the celebration in which the these men are carrying big belts that are bouncing and making big noise. Dig Like cowbells accounting. Yes huge cultures. A lot of this You know animal caretaking in the Malki. As the purpose of it is to wake the nature awake. The youth. Springtime is communist very much related to the end of winter. Welcome in the New Year and also we can in the nature and the spring is coming. So he's very much really. That's something you can see in two different towns in the north of Pamplona Navarre and also a couple of towns in the area outside San Sebastian. When I think of eastern Spain anyways I think of processions solemn processions like in savvy and so on some Amazon Too Holy Week Carnival feels a little more. Just apart and in. Holy Week is more sacred. Yes especially in the spiny side. You'RE GONNA see is big. Parades like you'd like him to turn off taller than most popular. One people go from all the areas. Go and see this parade. Our guest from Basque country are Agustin Cerita from San Sebastian Spain and Claire. Moya from aspirin a little town outside zone in the southwest corner of France.
