"Go you work. Our practices are almost some form of them by almost every Sunday now so now to know. Saddam was easier is it was easy to grow. You know easy to get better because everyone was so competitive and it didn't matter if you on the first thing the second team you're you're out there competing with the highest level of talent in the nation in the world and a lot of cases and I try to tell people so much. How Great Shirl Miller was that? They don't get it they. They don't get it because they didn't practice. I guess her play against her same way with the McGee twinkie. Twins had something special because Politika stretch you out and shoot. The three pound was a beast underneath the basket and you just had that combination between the two that when I came in there I was like look. I'm running Paul off the three point line and I'm just GonNa pray begin in front of her. You're you have Vonda coming in with your Miller and sure Miller's gotten all this publicity like Rhonda said she didn't know much about her because she's on the east coast shows in the West Coast and at that time when his basketball players didn't get the note writer. They're getting now and so But they gel together and that's why I wanted to room up together because I knew that they would be really fantastic on the floor and and Cooper okay so you got the freshman class then. You've got the sophomore class with Cynthia Cooper and and then you've got the McGee's and so you've got coop caught in the middle Out of that group and but the leadership that was on the floor and the leadership off the floor had a lot to do with all of that. I think Cooper you know coming from where she came and the rough part of town in La and and then wanted to come from a big city one and then shirl over here from you know Riverside. She's kind of a country bumpkin coming in and Pamela McGee coming in from the mid West there just was A. I don't know it was just the right chemistry and it all came together and the fact that they got to play ball and win two national championships altogether. I think had a lot to say about about the kind of people they work. The accepted each other. They all were different but they had chemistry. That was just out of this world and I was fortunate. I was so fortunate to have you know players accept each other but I don't know I don't know if it was. I accepted all of them for each of 'em for who they were. I don't know if it was that if the players saw the other player saw that in me and then they carry that over to them but I think that was so genuine. How they were. There was nothing ever think about these. These Young Women that I was coaching. You know the China. I think we really saw the bigger picture You know I was. I was able to connect with Cynthia because she was from the city. I was from the city. I connected with Cheryl because we were roommates and then the McGee twins you got you. You have to connect with them. It's things on the court. You gotta get the level over specs for everybody on the team Jay or you Lonzo Fleischer Tomato Font Tracy Longo. Melissa War Leeann Sarah. There was a level of respect for everybody. And you know we. We were young. We were kids but we knew that we had something special in our talent and we knew if we work together we can. It happen and we wanted to win a championship attitude in practice every single day we took. We took pride in going hard and practice every day because it was. We wanted it to be showtime who we got on the court so we knew we took care of our business. We were going to have fun on the core and every two that you know another thing to add to that run into is that that You know when you bring in a freshman. That's got so much well. What publicity women's basketball players got at the time and show Miller She's like this outstanding player and she worked so hard every day. I mean I never saw her. Take a day off in practice and and and so here. You're on the team. Not that the rest of them weren't working hard. But how do you not work hard than the one of the best players in the country is working or tail off? That's the leadership role right there and I think a lot of them they have to jump on it and Paul mcgibbon have the jump on it. Even though they have been the stars before Cheryl and I remember one thing that was really funny about the McGee's coming in as freshmen. They told me coach. I thought we were coming here to play basketball. Not Run cross country because I used to take them home hated. We're doing preseason conditioning. Because I didn't APP received conditioning coaches the head. Coach did it back in the seventies and eighties and and we'd go out on the track and I'd have times for them. They had to meet the time so they ran it over again and it was hard. It was not an easy workout and payment Paul Magee Pollard. Be throwing up on the track and payments be crying and I mean it was hard for six three and You know stay up with the guards but boy they tried. And I don't know how many times Pam Pam how to Redo hurts and reversed over and over again to get time. I don't know if she ever did but she sure got a good workout. It would always seem like as soon as it was. Time for season conditioning would be an Indian summer in Los Angeles we. We didn't notice coach. But sherline I and some other places we would be in our dorm room trying to do all type of dances and seances everything. So maybe we don't have was like the worst thing ever happened to run because we knew Pam was not gonNa make the time that was me back and like run next to her. Like I can't even remember did trying to help him to come on 'cause when I was in college my coach made us run 'em we had seven players on the team and we had to make so many such a short period of time so I thought man. That's a hard drill so I I used it my entire career and the players are three three. We coach sharp. Had A drill that you have to pay three on three for three minutes and whoever law had to run I my team would get up by like four points and I was stalled for a whole minute. How mad like I would be so mad? That's not basketball. That's like shoot up trying to win. 'cause I tell you about the McKee twin? Let me tell you one thing McKee twins and not trying to run the McKay. Twins are not my right we came on. I said well listen. I already know Pam. You Ain't trying to run. That's what I found out. I had to run mouth for time. So Miller five minute mile. That came here to play basketball. I'm not trying to cross country. Cynthia Cooper has miss so much to the history of women's basketball when you think about the Houston comets dynasty the MVP awards raising the roof and it was just for -freshing An insightful to relive her journey at USC along with our very humble beginnings great players all around the League but Cynthia was really the first superstar of the WNBA. "You know, you have all this money and you shouldn't be complaining about anything. I think I mean to quote begging MO money, MO problems. I'm say, ads on and money doesn't really eliminate what what you've been dealing with at a certain age. And then on top of that, I feel like money can make it worse because you have friends and family members who are coming out of the woodwork, asking you for things and you're dealing with all this internal stuff. Meanwhile, everyone expects you to take care of them. Are everyone expects you to be fine because you have all this money and they're constantly asking you for things. You don't know who your real friends are, even who which family members are really for you or if they really want something. So I think it can add onto the issue. And then like you said, just in the bottle it up and then they end up harming themselves or they harm other people around them, and it's just something that needs to be eliminated. So completely agree with what you said, but Tijuana know what you think. Yeah, I agree with you guys. And so interestingly enough, last. Year, I did a piece for the defeated. We're, I talked to Amani at the time. She was money. Boy, it abut Amani, Mckee Stafford, and she has been open with her struggles with mental health and depression. She's attempted suicide more than once. She's the daughter of Pamela McGee who was a WNBA star. She's the sister of devel- McGee. So she has had a life in the limelight, in in some ways. I also talked to shimmy coast clo- who has been open with her mental health struggles. I have a very close friend of mine. I'm also a publisher very astounding woman for what she's been through and she suffers within diety. I'm some people didn't even realize as I was a mental health issue, but it is. And so and talking to all these people, you just kind of find out that the one thing that you know, one thing that they were able to do, they were able to find the ways to help channel their emotions to help. Channel, their expression. But the one thing that they all had in common is that they didn't wanna talk about it because in our community, it's not a mental health issues. It's just pray about it. Don't heal. Nobody that people don't think you crazy stuff like that. You know what I mean? And we don't do a good job of as you mentioned just that we don't do a good job within our own community. Just simply saying, you know, these things are issues. These things are problems. These things are are things that you may need to seek medical or professional help for to help you deal with whatever it is that you could possibly be dealing with. How about just the simple, you know, I love you. We're here. We can't just little like the smallest things can make the biggest impact in a person that you don't know what they could be internally struggling with. And it's just so unfortunate that people like the Marta rose and Kevin love and Imani and others have to, you know, have to be in the limelight, and they have to pretty much hide their emotions just because they're not always in a position to where they can be vulnerable without being judged or without having that stigma attached to them. But it's also a good thing that people. Kevin love and Dhamar Rosen employ appears any money and others are speaking out about it because it's showing to the to the the normal, Joe, that you're right. Money doesn't solve anything. As a matter of fact, Damara Roseanne said, I wish everybody had money, so they could understand truly that money does not buy happiness and it's and it's one hundred percent, correct. I mean, at the end of the day, we need more people to show their vulnerability because someone said, and I can't remember who it was. People don't post their own ability on Instagram. People don't fails when they met or when you're hurt, or when it crying on Twitter and Facebook to if they do, they try to make it look cute, right? You on. I'm saying. I do not what is not really what it is and at the end of the day, that's what people see. And so that's all that people were soom were associated with what being of a famous person, or an athlete, or actress, or whoever, and just not the case. So I'm glad that there's breaking up..
