The driver who caused the accident is currently in critical condition. I'm Chris. You're listening to Bloomberg businessweek with Carol massar and Bloomberg quick takes Tim stenog from Bloomberg radio. Time now for a weekly dive into the pursuit section of the magazine and our undercover reporting expert is at it again. We're talking about none other than Bloomberg pursuits contributing writer, Brandon presser. He's previously embedded himself with some of the world's most prestigious lifestyle brands everywhere from New York's Plaza hotel to the Las Vegas Strip. All to decipher what goes on behind the scenes when it comes to their services. And this week, Brandon reveals what it takes to be an in demand personal trainer to do that he gathered Intel from an all star team at the world famous techno gym. And once again, the elite experience proves to be a little bit of a strange one, including what a little mini pig was involved. All right, we'll get to that. Pigs were harmed in the making of this story, okay? We'll get to it. Brandon joins us along with Bloomberg pursuits editor Chris rouser. So Chris, where do we start on this one? Well, Brandon has done so many of these at this point going behind the scenes at Disney, on super yachts, and I'm always like, we're not gonna be able to think of another thing to do. And he came up with the idea for celebrity or fitness trainers for the rich and famous. And I said, oh God, this is perfect. 'cause I know what the times that I've had a trainer how I have treated that person as a therapist, placed all my hopes and dreams with that person, maybe been a little in love with that person. And totally. We've all been there. And so Brandon was Brandon got hooked up with techno gym, which is a great company, and it really is a backbone of the fitness industry in a way that a lot of people don't realize. And it was off to the races. All right, Brandon, come on in here because you got a host of things that you've learned from the celebrity personal trainers. I want to start out with though who these people are and how techno gym recruits them because it's an elite group. Yeah, so techno gym has all of this incredible hardware. They were first out of the gate was stopped where in the 90s. And now they're pivoting to have a media arm of their company, which essentially means they're creating a lot of video content. Social media content. So they did as a worldwide search for the best trainers around the world. And they whittled it down to these 6 all star talent trainers. And basically what they were looking for was actually sort of a lack of hubris, I think. That was interesting. Trainers are on social media and they have muscles and they're taking selfies and they were looking for people who are physically fit, but humble. Well, you said specifically in the story about, I guess they did an audition and then they had to watch themselves back and those who actually cringed at seeing themselves. Those are the ones that they liked. Yeah, that was one of my favorite anecdotes from all of my interviews. So just chatting with the head of content. I loved that little idea. And he said that were so many people that they thought they were going to hire. And then when they watched them watching the tapes, they had this big smile on their face. So, okay, so we know that some of these people love themselves. So let's talk about how your clients love them. Some of the best parts of this story are the relationship between the clients and the trainers. So I think one of the things that was a big takeaway for me is that physical fitness is a non drug high. So there is this level of addiction you have in the endorphins are going and you feel really good. And so a lot of people kind of transpose that obsession onto their trainers, like their trainers, their dealer. And so there is this level of obsession that occurs in one of the couples that one of these talent trainers teaches. They got divorced. And they actually had to put it in their custody papers that they had to share custody of their trainer like other opposite days of the week. It's absolutely insane. Okay, speaking of divorce, there are some other anecdotes that you share in here about couples that are still together that perhaps maybe shouldn't be based on what they're doing and what they're telling their personal trainers. Yeah, one of the big takeaways for me as well was that trainers are basically therapists and a lot of the trainers are getting paid two or three or four or $500 an hour to train these people and they only spend about half of the class engaged in physical physical fitness the other half is hearing about their client's problem and usually that involves trading a husband for an hour of his talking about hiring prostitutes when they're on their international business trips and then the next hour they're with their wife. The unwitting wife. The stories they could tell. I do think about the pandemic has really made, I think, a lot more people lean into wellness because we could just do so much virtually. And I think we were all shocked at how much we could do. But it's also, I think, led to people maybe amping up their gyms at home. You got some insight into some of the kind of personal private gyms that people have. Yeah, one of the interesting things was that techno gym actually partners with all of these very famous design firms all over the world. And all these wellness spaces are increasing in size, and wellness spaces and hotels even are sort of taking over places that would have like the rooftop bar and how it's the rooftop gym.

"Seem to be stopping anytime soon. These people are calling for an end to a communist regime in cuba but they can happen without the us government which is why they were protesting until late with hopes of reaching the white house. Protesters shut down a section of the palmetto expressway for hours tuesday. "Here. I've rarely felt more publicly lonely on an issue. Then elian gonzalez twenty years ago. Where miami wanted one thing and felt the roots of freedom very strongly felt like america wanted the opposite and was we weren't really reaching them. They were wondering. What are those crazy cubans doing down there. Why are they going to that. House and rating closet to take child away from family and greg. You and dan have a unique perspective. Because he worked for the miami herald and when i was younger. Things got really hot between the cuban people. Here miami cuban exiles and the miami herald and you were there while that was happening. weren't you oh of course the elian gonzalez thing Looking back on it. You know with sort of clarity retrospect not that you didn't realize it then but the optics of that were so horrible. I mean you can. Everyone can picture the image of those drawn guns and little elian gonzalez. Who was what eight years old at the time. Cowering and it was just so abhorrent That the governor that the us government was sort of almost kidnapping this child. It's what it's what america america when you polled america. That's what america wanted outside outside of cuban miami. Take that child out of the freedom of miami and send him back to his father in cuba and the lack of freedom after his mother had died trying to get him that freedom the american government and its military arm stormed into a house and went in there and took that child. And that's what. I'm talking about the loneliness of it because america was looking at that. And what is the matter with those crazy cubans and now they're looking at it. And you know mayor bitcoins out there saying bomb cuba like and it's like what are you doing. What are you doing. How are you ending up your the mayor of miami. You're the crypto mayor of miami. The son of a lifelong politician. What are you doing playing to constituents why rhonda santa's signs into law. Something that prohibits the right to assembly for essentially black lives matter protesters but when he's asked about when cuban protesters shut down the palmetto expressway. He doesn't have an answer as he's in a room full of cuban constituents. It's politics as usual. i found. Blm statement yesterday. Kind of heartbreaking. Because i took the opportunity with the cuban protesters to instead of just highlighting my pipe because plenty of that was going around really kind of shining light on some of the hypocrisy that i found very frustrating. Because i didn't make it home until eight o'clock that night. Because i was directly affected by that shut down on one of the most important highways but i got it just like i got it when people shut down the macarthur causeway fan of doing that affects a lot of people. I think it's counter intuitive. But you have the freedom to do that and you're not affording that same freedom to be l. m. protesters and to see what. Blm statement on it was yesterday. Was really heartbreaking. Now i understand. It's a very complicated issue here. And this is an opportunity to talk about an embargo. That hasn't necessarily worked. Damn what do you want as to say. Because mike's reid he's playing politics there he's speaking to the but what do you wanted to say mayor. You could use all sorts of strong verbiage without suggesting that america intervened by bombing the people who are protesting. Because they're suffering. Let mike finish his point here because it's a delicate one. I appreciate that. And i wish it came sooner because i'm nervous about leaving. Anything that can be perceived as a as a criticism of biella with reason like social media. Right now is is is kind of toxic and this is become a political issue so black lives matter took the opportunity to weigh in a lot of people have been waiting for days because you're drawing direct comparisons among protests to what they would say. Black lives matter condemns. Us federal governments inhumane treatment of cubans. Let me stop right there. They took this opportunity to condemn the united states. Government as opposed to the cuban government. They make a a really good point. About how the embargo as directly affected people of color on the island. And they even actually tout cuba's Civic rights history in backing african countries. It starts the cuban situation starts with castro's communist regime full stop full stop. Yes we're here in part because the u. s. embargo has done its job in terms of really crippling that economy. But i i see that. And i'm like guys i'm an ally you've done so much in further educating me about how institutions that are meant to return Protect and serve us. Are gunning people down in the streets. The cuban government does the same thing to. It's people at secretive about it. It's out there. Taught to cuban exile for you to dismiss that and take the opportunity to condemn the us government when it could have been within the same message and not that in leadoff. It was hurtful to mike. But that's where we are when it becomes about the insurrection and you hear from a lot of black folks. Well this is chickens coming home to roost right here. This is not my problem. This is what you wrought with your policies. Black and cubans are divided on this. Black cubans are also getting gunned down by their own government. There that is the top line issue here. We can get into the embargo and the embargo could have been a part of that statement but they totally minimize. The atrocities of the cuban government is responsible for and put the onus on the entire situation on the united states. That's bullshit in my opinion. This is the core issue of what we've been arguing about for many years. Which is does the embargo work. Yes of course. It makes the people in the government in the world of cuba suffer. Because they're stuck in the nineteen fifties. They've got russian ladas in the street and children are walking around with condoms used as balloons because there is nothing there because we've choked it as a punishment for what they are which is a human rights. Violator that leads to miami being birth ninety miles away from key west. What's been berthed. Here is what gets birth to win. That spits out through its oppression the yearning for freedom that has been allowed here and that has built this particular city that we're sitting in the middle of the embargoes where it starts and the argument starts on. Whose fault is that. The cuban government or the american government's for doing the embargo either to well or poorly depending on how it is that you want to look at it. The result of the embargo is we've choked that island but not quite death. The government still prophets and. It's all centered around that argument. Right there mike. All of the disagreement. When how do you think. America receives as the black lives matter. Movements are protesting here and cuban people near the freedom tower driving trucks into it in a way that is hostile and they're yelling about black lives matter being communist like the first trick of some of these gifters depit all the sides against each other. Yeah and they moved the goalpost to well. I didn't see any places being Destroyed by these protesters. And i also didn't see police officers in riot gear shields and batons already agitated. Because they're the ones being directly protested as opposed to a foreign government in place where cubans are the majority in many of those officers share those very same sensibilities reasons why those riots get ratcheted up or if you could even call them riots many senses because police already go into it hot and heavy. That was missing in the palmetto Protests that we saw here recently. But i know you said it starts with embargo in dozen it just flatly doesn't the embargo is a very polarizing topic. Here not really across the world. I think there were two countries that voted to keep the embargoes in the united. Nations was united states in israel who are usually bound on this stuff they back us up there. We back them up everywhere. Just historically I it across the world. They we should end this embargo conversations to be had there. But it's not the conversation that many people are begging to have just like you go to the streets if we and i hate to draw direct comparisons. But you're basically screaming for people to just pay attention. Black lives matter. This is happening. Cubans down here. Cuban exiles have been trying to get your attention about the atrocities that government is committed on. Its own people for years and for you as this massive influential civil rights movement. That is doing so much important. Work to completely bypass that to take a shot at the united states government instead of the government that is killing its own. People was really hurtful for people like me who consider myself allies at blm movement. The embargo was intended to put pressure on the cuban government. Ends up hurting the cuban people and that in turn leads to what we're seeing..

"It's now been six months since the former guys evacuation from the white house and a slew of new books or hitting the shelves with some damning information for instance washington post journalists carolinian. Philip rucker report in their forthcoming book. I alone can fix it. That joint chiefs of staff chairman general. Mark milley worried that the former guy would attempt to use the military to stage a coup. The book reporting that milley told friends and colleagues. He was on guard. For a quote reichstag moment but didn't expect trump to prevail. He said that trump and his supporters may try a coup. but they're not going to effing ing succeed. Milly reportedly said quote. You can't do this without the military. You can't do this without the cia and the fbi where the guys with the guns regarding the rice. Sag moment quote. The book also claims that. Millie saw trump as quote the classic authoritarian leader with nothing to lose and he feared that he'd attempted coup rather than admit defeat but told colleagues he was prepared for that eventuality with more revelations coming out every day. Some are asking why these stories were held for books instead of being reported when they actually happened. That's a question all pose to some of these authors as they guest on my show in the coming weeks. This tidbit comes not from a book. But from the guardian newspaper they're reporting on an alleged leak from someone. Inside the kremlin resurrecting the allegations contained in that infamous dossier right. The leak reportedly states that vladimir putin personally approved in various plot to throw russia's support behind trump's 2016 campaign. The documents states that putin and his top lieutenants agreed that a victory for a quote mentally unstable trump would permanently weaken the united states. The league document also reportedly states. The kremlin has so-called compromise on trump. it cryptically refers to quote certain events that happened during quote. Non official visits to russian federation territory The purported leak doesn't explain what those events involved only referring to an appendix that was not attached to the document obtained by the guardian now trump is known to a visited moscow on a number of occasions in the decades before he went to the white house. One memorable section of the steele dossier claimed that the former guy and some russian prostitutes in moscow. Hotel room You know the story. The trump years were horrific and new polling shows that the leading republican twenty twenty four contender should trump. Not run again is florida governor rhonda santa's now as a floridian. This frightens me for many reasons earlier. This year disentis pushed and signed into law an anti protest bill that specifically sanctions demonstrators. Who blocked roadways and raises criminal penalties for participants in protests. That may get out of hand even if they're not to blame and it would give civil immunity to motorists who might run down a protest or participating in such demonstration well on wednesday major highways including miami. Dade county's palmetto expressway were closed as protesters marched in solidarity with the massive street protests. Going on in cuba not only haven't authorities enforce the law against these protesters. They cordoned off the highway to give the marchers free right of way. Civil rights groups including the aclu and n. w. c. p. legal fund have asked a federal judge to block enforcement of the law. Hp one emotion filed in us district court for the northern district of florida state's quote plaintiffs and their members are reasonably frightened. Not only because they could be arrested and held without bail for peacefully demonstrating but also because under the law. It's more likely that plaintiffs and their members could be seriously injured or killed by people who disagree with their message. That's fantas- or death sentence as many of us floridians call him. The more you know about this guy. The more disgusted you'll become. Here's another example. The disentis campaign team on wednesday rolled out some merchandise t shirts and cousy is reading quote. Don't fao ci. my florida. Disentis famously would not allow cruise ships. Who sail out of florida ports to require vaccinations or proof vaccinations. It's all just orwellian but despite people like to santos the white house is pressing forward with vaccination awareness efforts and disinformation busting campaigns as the delta variant threatens to become even more pervasive on wednesday pop. Star olivia rodriguez visited the white house to meet with president biden and dr vouch iw to promote vaccines among younger americans. She stopped briefly inside the white house.
