Liberal Palm Beach County Parents Prefer to Keep Kids in Muzzles
"The whole thing laid out ready to go. And then I see on this Facebook page The WPTV, which is a local media outlet down here in Palm Beach. I live north upon beach in Florida. They're reporting that despite Governor De Santis is ban on mask mandates, not ban on masks. Yeah, contrary to with Randi Weingarten, the teachers union tells people because she's a liar. It's not a ban on massacres. A ban on masked man. His parents can choose. Put a kid. They're kidding. Um, asked why they choose that I don't know, but or they can choose not to right. So, uh, Palm Beach County basically gave the double barreled middle finger to Governor De Santis and said, We're just going to mandate masks. So most parents, I'm assuming just going to ignore this because nobody really cares with the Palm Beach County People say there are losers in the in the governing governing infrastructure. Pompey's people down there are awesome, but it's run by idiots and losers. Palm Beach kind of. Sadly, it's largely Democrats. They're all in Brussels. And I'm sitting there and I'm reading the comments underneath the story. And it's amazing how many parents are on their well, we're gonna call Pinots. Parents in name only who don't care about their kids at all, have not asked any questions about the long term effects of masking their kids for eight hours a day, the effectiveness of the matter relative to the potential negative effects they've done none of this. They want their kids and muzzles like dogs because they don't care about their kids. They just don't the gas. Somebody's talking about killer Basque Has it stopped. Anything isn't really been effective in stopping. Do you have any actual evidence? Real world evidence that this thing has been this masked man they affect you Have any of that evidence? No, I don't have it. So you're gonna put your kid in the muzzle? Of course I am. I'm a liberal parent. Don't give a damn about my kids. I just don't like you conservatives. So I'm going to take it out of my kids. Make sure he breathes in his own carbon dioxide all day in a filthy, dirty mask where everybody sweats all over the place in Florida. "To South Florida Sunday on the stations of Harvard Radio West Palm Beach. We thank you for being with us here on the South Florida Sunday and we'd like to welcome our next guest Our friend Lauren Ellis from Peggy Adams Animal Rescue League here in Palm Beach County. Lauren, welcome back to South Florida Sunday. Thank you so much for having me Well, it's always good to talk with our friends at Peggy Adams and I know a lot of folks drive by that beautiful facility. I know you added on to it here recently, and it's such an impressive Campus if you will, right there off of Okeechobee and military, so it's good to have you back with us to get us up to date on what's going on. But for folks who drive by your beautiful facility and don't really know what's going on inside, tell us a little bit about how Peggy Adams Animal Rescue League got started and what it's all about. Sure so pick Adam's Animal Rescue League is Palm Beach County's oldest and largest privately funded animal shelter. Actually, this past year we turned 95 years old. So, like you said, we're located on military trail, and we provide services over 35,000 cats and dogs each year and some of these services they include cat and dog adoption. Our affordable wellness clinic Day and neuter Services. A T NPR program, which stands for trap, neuter, Vaccinate eight and return for those community cats out there. We also have dog training a pet. Lawson found program and our piggies pantry, pet food banks, So we do a lot of community and we love it. We love it Now. I mentioned driving past the facility. I was down that way the other day, leaving work, and I see even more construction. You have a new pet adoption center going. I'll tell us about that. We've you were very excited that our new state of the art Pet Adoption Center is almost complete. This building is going to have individual dog kennels with outdoor patios. It's gonna have meeting green areas. A huge cat wing with a caddy. Oh, that allows fresh air access to our cats. Thoroughly also be a humane education center with conference rooms. Ah photography studio grooming room and so much more. It's really has gone up really quickly, and it's expected to be open in early 2021. On this pet adoption center. It will actually have the capacity that double the amount of live rescued, enabling us to save thousands more dogs, cats, puppies and kittens. On the subject of pet adoption. Let's take it from the beginning. How do pets wind up at Peggy Adams? Various ways, cats and dogs. They come to us. They might be like lost or found in the community and Palm Beach County. Many times we transfer animals from other shelters, including our local Palm Beach County, animal care and control. Peggy Adams is also an emergency placement partner for special cases such as horning situations or even natural disasters. And unfortunately, a lot of times owners have to surrender their pets to, um we're proud to serve Palm Beach County, and it's very important to us to be there for our community and times of need. Now we know from speaking with all of our friends here on South Florida Sunday are nonprofits are charitable organizations and our five old one see threes. We know they've all been hit particularly hard due to the pandemic kind of hitting there in the spring and the summer, which is kind of the peak season for fund raising for Charitable organizations in South Florida area. Now you know this. Normally the fall into the holiday season is is the main few months for big hype hype. Profile top shelf events, So we know all of our friends have been hit hard. How has this pandemic affected? Peggy Adams? They have. I mean, ah lot of our fundraising events there been canceled or they've had to move virtual. So we've had to get creative with a lot of those events as well as other nonprofits are having to do, too. So limit the amount of traffic at our shelter. All of our services have been operating by appointment. When people do come to our facility. We do do temperatures, chest temperature testing and masks are mandatory. Um We do have great news to report as well. Since Kobe 19 has hit us back in February March, we've had a huge influx of foster volunteers, which helped to reduce the strain on our shelves. Um, there's also enabled us to get many of our long term animals into loving, cozy homes as well. As a matter of fact, we had a 10 year old bully breed. Named trooper who had to be an only child on he's with us for over 400 days, and he was placed into a foster home. And then eventually that foster home ended up adopting him. So that was one of the you know, one of the many very heartwarming stories. And adoptions. I mean, since people have been working at home, you know they want to have a furry companion. So adoptions have actually been at a record high. Well, that's good news. That's great news. We're glad that dogs and cats were finding forever homes. On the other side of that coin, though, have you noticed on increase in traffic with your Peggy's pantry or our pet owners finding him or more difficult to come up with food and other items for their pets? Because of the panda? Absolutely absolutely. Eddie Adams have Ah, Peggy's pantry that offers help to those who might be struggling by temporarily assisting families with dog and cat food in the pantry offers supplies. Referrals or vouchers for low cost that care vaccines Ella spay and neuter services. Um the primary goal of our pantry is to keep that with the people who love them and out of shelters. S O before the covert pandemic. Kappas.

Thank you for listening to South Florida Sunday on the stations of hovered Radio West Palm Beach. This's South Florida Sunday. We thank you for being with us. Our next guest is Marcia Martino, executive director of NAMI, Palm Beach County. Marsha. Welcome back To South Florida Sunday. Well, thank you. I'm happy to be back. Good to have you on the program for folks who missed our previous conversation. Tell us about NAMI. What is NAMI? Well, NAMI is the National Alliance on Mental Illness. We are a national organization with affiliates and every state. Our affiliate is just Palm Beach County, Florida. And NAMI is a grassroots organization, the largest mental health dress roots organization in the country, and, Ah, our programs and services are all Managed and run by people living with mental illness and family members, and we do education, support and advocacy for people living with mental illness. So it sounds like it is as executive director of NAMI and Palm Beach County. You're awfully busy. Tell us what are some of your roles. Oh, gosh. We're a small organization so everyone does kind of everything. But I mostly manage manage the budget, which is the fun part of being an administrator. But Uh, oversee the programs or the person who runs the programs. We do have have someone who manages all of our education and Support groups. Ah, I am part of several community groups where people with mental illness may intersect other organizations and groups in the community. People who are homeless or incarcerated, had substance abuse issues. I try to do a lot of advocacy work in those areas. And then we don't really have a lot of walk ins into our office. But we get a lot of calls we get about 40 calls a week of from people looking for help. Now two people reach out to you directly or do they go through, like a clearing house or Ah, third party. How did they reach out to you directly? I think we we must pop up pretty high on a Google. People call us and they've never heard of us. But they call looking for help. So we're we're pretty good at directing people to Ah, to the right place to get to get some help. We don't Have clinical services ourselves. But we help walk people through whether they have insurance or not. We help get help them get to the right place. And we're talking about advocacy and other programs and other resource is for folks with mental illness. Mental illness is a lot more common. Then, Ah, most people would think and The term mental illness. Correct me. If I'm wrong, it covers the whole lot of different issues. It does. And, you know generally, people think all those people with mental illness and they're they're thinking of someone with a really serious, severe mental illness, But But when we're talking about mental illness, we're talking about people with it. With the anxiety disorder. We're talking about people with depression on and in this day and age of Cove it the numbers are pretty high, so it's really a range of symptoms and the more severe and our people with serious mental illness, and that's about one in 25. But in the general population of just any mental illness, it's about one in five Would you say that the one thing that they all may have in common is a reluctance on the part of the person to seek help. That is a huge issue. A very big issue. It's ah it on average. It takes about 11 years from the onset of symptoms to someone getting help 11 years. That's a lot of struggle. It is. It's a lot of pain. Now tell me if you have some tips that would help others. Maybe they are beginning to notice. Some of their behaviours are changing. What are some of the warning signs they should be looking out for And as you say. How soon should they Obviously, they don't want to wait. 10 years, 11 years. How long should no no. Ah, you know, I guess I kind of look at at mental health as kind of a continuum. And ah, at the at the lower end of the continuum, maybe some intermittent issues that someone may have over worrying or sometimes having trouble sleeping or Um, um, maybe Having A few too many drinks when they're feeling stressed that kind of thing, But, you know, amended the extreme end of someone who really is just not functioning at all. So there's There's really a range in there and and at any point in a person's going to stay in their year in their weak, they you know they may they may you know, fall in a different place in that range, but But you know when someone's feeling sad and withdrawn for for more than a couple weeks, When they're thinking about maybe harming themselves. When they're feeling out of control, and they're really like engaging in some risk taking behaviors, maybe really excessive use of drugs or alcohol, that self medicating. Um Sometimes when they feel like things aren't really there. Maybe kind of some delusional thinking or just feeling maybe out of their body. Um, uh, some significant weight gain or significant weight loss. Insomnia or any trouble sleeping, waking up. That's that is a very common symptoms of a lot of mental health issues. And and then also, Ah ah problem concentrating or or being able to kind of really focused on something and feel like they're getting something done. Those air kind of some of the more common ones worrying, having fears that get in the way of even getting anything done. You know if any of those things go on for any any length, a timer there, interviewing interfering with someone's ability to enjoy their life. It's time to reach out and.

Add FreedomWorks joins us now at Freedom Works on Twitter. Sara. So we were talking about the situation in Georgia ended up diving into it quite a bit last hour. First give us hear of your overview your thoughts about what happened in Georgia and concerns you have more broadly. Yeah. Hi, Brian Again. Sara Anderson here, Freedomworks. We're glad to talk about this issue. And of course, it's really important as we're going into November to look at any possibilities of where there might be sacrifices in the integrity of our elections in one main way that that can happen is with the left major push for math, male and voting when I look at the situation in Georgia Kind of, says one thing to me, which is look, the type of stuff can happen even with very legitimate, very secure absentee voters who send in their absentee ballots after having her busted them and then show up to vote on election Day as well, if I can happen with these secure absentee ballots It can sure happened with math, male and voting and that's what we really need to be concerned about. Is the left push, Tio put voter rolls out there and and mail ballots out every voter on voter rolls that requires the government having correct voter roles, which I don't have. For confidence. Well, let me ask you about the You know the system potentially working. So I mean, the good news here is these 1000 Georgians were found out. So to that end does that show that ultimately the system here at the end of it all did good work. You know it does. I think that they have done a good job down in Georgia, making sure they addressed the issue. They're looking into all 1000 cases to make sure that they get it right. But the more you open up the system kind of these vulnerabilities, The more risky it is that you're not going to be able to find all of these people on a wider scale. And when That happens, You risk kind of people, not Come. It adds uncertainty to the situation that time where certainty is what we need so we can have legitimate absentee voting. Of course we can, and I think it's good for people to be able to identify who they are and oppressed the ballot. But the idea of the government just shipping out math ballots to every voter.

"For sport for Palm Beach county in one of twenty four boards across the state of Florida so we handle everything from Boca to Jupiter to Belle glade in all the cities and businesses from in between there for how long as career source in or around probably close to thirty five forty years now and again we try to help people find employment unemployment is very low right now so if you're looking for a job it's a great time to engage with us that's an interesting you know that's an interesting look at a situation I would you know normally you wouldn't expect it to say well you know what the final plan is down and the maybe and then now is the time I I wanted to start with so do you work with folks who are looking to change maybe their career path or are you working with the young people to decide or both both we have a lot of younger people that are coming out of high school or college or some type of technical school that are looking for part time full time employment and we do have a lot of what we called career transition errors or people that are under employed that are looking for a better job and now we can help them there's a tremendous amount of jobs available and what I don't I'm sure there are tons of jobs and I would expect you to run down the mall but is there a particular field is there a particular set of skills that we're seeing a lot of interest in lately healthcare information technology the trades manufacturing obviously construction these are great jobs they're they're all hiring right now so there's everything went from a front desk person to C. suite in director level positions available and if folks are listening to is thinking maybe they like to take advantage of the services are made available by career source how they go about that sure they can go to W. W. dot new year hyphen knew me dot com or they can go to career source PVC dot com there's a variety of ways to engage with us now you mentioned that there is a wide variety of different jobs available and it sort of illustrate that as far as as far as pay scale and responsibility and everything else is your program the professional placement network and you have some information about that for us yeah so the professional placement crystals is professional placement network is for seasoned professionals who have the opportunity to transition to the next level of employment so tell us what that means so what that means participants are available from managers C. suite available in any industry in Palm Beach county right you must have a four year degree minimally and also you have to have been working for at least four years and earning in excess of forty seven thousand dollars a year so that's great I mean it sounds like there's there's a career for whatever as skills that you have and and and for every spectrum it goes from the sample careers to something very professional are you looking for any particular fields in a professional covers a lot of ground anything in particular that you're spotlighting or that you're focusing on the financial industry has a lot of openings at this point in time but we're looking more for individuals from any industry Michael mentioned quite a few of them that are progressing right now each one of those industries have vertical markets and we look to plug in applicants and candidates with the need is most what advice would you have for someone who is looking to make that kind of a move well the first thing I would say is that you have to look into getting yourself branded at this point in time we live in the digital economy and branding across platforms is very important in your job search that's interesting branding and platforms you know the the lingo and of the professional world has certainly changed a lot recently and that's become a big part of success when it comes to a career is this this handing personal branding tell some more about that well the first thing you want to do is you want to be able to navigate between your resume your digital platform which is your present social media such as linked and and or how to navigate through these job boards such as monster indeed xterra I'll probably term it's a pre court of monster is a little bit that's a this is my and and so that's that's part of what what you provide in your services as usual folks how how to use this to their advantage and how to how to brand themselves exactly navigating at this point both through your resume as well as to this these platforms help you to stand out and not stick out today's economy and you want to make sure that your foot print is one that can easily be read one of the things you'll hear us talk about less is more boy Hey isn't that the truth well those are words to live by now if we have someone listening who would like to get here and find out more about this or maybe get involved in some way deserve the same contact information as we mentioned before yes the same contact information that we have mentioned before and that is new year dash knew me account can you kind of walk us through the process folks are listening there thinking you know I might want to take advantage of this this program what can they expect when they when they reach out to you and get more information take us through how that goes well there is a link that you would click on from professional placement network there is a little bit tell us about the three days and then it gives you very specific information on how that would flow the shop so from nine to twelve so you have room in the afternoon to still continue interviewing so we don't trying to hold you hostage for a full day because we understand that interviewing.
