Presidential Pelotons and data accountability
"What can happen if you have a connected bicycle in the white house and this reminds me. This is actually a good thing. I think to think about because we're old enough to remember this. But you know presidents used to get special. Even obama had a special blackberry created for him. It used to be that you didn't have to worry about cybersecurity because the president in his office had his landline phone rate. In the secret service had radios. And it's not like if you need to get in touch with the president you can get in touch with the president right. Well not you or i but someone important and then cell phones came along and everybody was used to posting on twitter and doing their thing and this became a real concern for people who are worried about foreign powers spying on presidential communications and now with the bringing in of connected devices. Maybe not a smart home like i don't think the white house kitted out with philips hue bulbs but a peleton is an entry point into the network so my hunch is i would. I would love for someone to tell me how to secure the peleton in the white house is on its own dedicated network. Maybe that can't touch anything else. I mean i'm trying to think of the ways that this could be bad. And i'm not really a hacker so i don't know but i like that we're thinking about this because we're probably going to benefit down the road as the defense insecurity infrastructure for the us figures out how to secure the stuff that will trickle down to the rest of us. And we'll get new an awesome best practices and the peleton itself. I mean it can track your heart rate at belief certainly detracts the rotations of the the bicycle tyre tyre but flywheel and so on and so forth like you could get in personal health information from if peleton's data was hacked or whatever and that sounds like who cares but really a foreign power could determine that while publicly every the president's in good health etc maybe he isn't and they would know that and that could change some outcomes. I think peleton does is great and we didn't think about this from a security standpoint but my wife wanted it on and we just didn't buy it because it was too expensive for us so we bought a non connected bike for about four hundred dollars and she the peleton digital classes so no data is actually tractor or something like that. And i'm not saying go do this for security reasons. Or that's what biden should do. But that's one way to mitigate it no. I don't think there's any speakers in like i don't know if he needs to watch what he says. He can't talk about microphones. My bad microphones. Right i've ridden a friend's palatine. And i don't recall that but i was also dying by the middle of my ride so i told you including speak. Anyway i'm like. I don't think anyone wants to hear me. Okay so just throwing that out. There is interesting security thing and something like we should all be aware of going forward. And maybe we'll get some new best practices out of this.

Some common misconceptions about phobias how they impact multiple areas of person's life. And how phobias are treated if you hear something that resonates with you are listening. Please share with us on social media using the HASHTAG. Tb In session. Here's our conversation joining us today. Mandy thank you so much for having me. This is such an incredible opportunity. I'm a member of the therapy for black girls community. I'm just so grateful for this platform art. You're doing well. I am grateful for all of you who are members of the community and makes the work. So incredibly rewarding. So I'm grateful for you so I'm happy to have you here to talk with us today about phobias. There are lots of questions. Typically in the community about all of the different ways that anxiety presents and we have not touched on phobias specifically some really happy to have you here to talk more about that is. This is what your specialty areas. Can you start by just telling us? What a phobia is and how it might be different than are like everyday worries and fears. Yeah this really happy to talk about this topic. Because actually before asset down to this interview one of the receptionist in my workspace she was talking about her phobia of dogs and how it has impacted her career so just to talk about phobias. It's a bag. Notable middle disorder is a type of anxiety disorder that causes an individual to experience extreme irrational fear about a situation living creature place or object. The person will experience intense distress. When they're faced with the source of their fall via is so funny that you mention the receptionist with the dog will be. I A pretty intense dog phobia. When I was younger. It could not be around and had never had a bad experience or anything with dogs until one of my friends during first jobs together. She had two dogs that I fell in love with and so that kind of cured. Me Of a phobia and now I have two dogs of my own. I'm glad you brought that up because I had that on my list of chat with you about because I think that that is one of the ones that we often see and that feels like people are very dismissive of it right like it's like. Oh this is just a dog. It's not GONNA do anything. Dog is not GONNA DO ANYTHING. You're right. People are very dismissive but it. This is a diagnosed mental disorder for people who have phobias it really impacts their lives. I have a phobia as well. So I say is four legged animals but particularly cats wear. I Will Avoi- places where I believe that there is a cat or see a cat in this very very common in the Black Community. Specifically related to animals. You mean just obvious. In general got it though they. They say they don't know exactly. How obvious are 'cause I mean. Sometimes we do have experiences where we are. You know maybe attacked by animal had a traumatic experience. I can water or something like that but a Lotta Times. The phobia is genetic in pass through Okay so it makes sense that if we've seen like parents or loved ones can be struggling with will be is that is something that we might struggle with as will buy because our parents sometimes will reinforce that phobia so if you have a parrot. That's afraid of dogs. For whatever reason you might hear or witness your your parent afraid and therefore you take on that. Fear Yourself Got It okay. So are there things that you feel like are commonly misunderstood about phobia? So we've already touched a little bit about how people will sometimes we'll minimize like. Oh that's not a big deal but are there other things that are commonly misunderstood understanding the difference between a normal fear and phobia? We all have ears in some anxieties. What a phobia is when we actually rearrange our lives to avoid that phobia so for example you know we all may feel a little nervous anxious overflying especially if the weather is bad at their term limits you know our stomachs may drop in. May Be uncomfortable but a phobia person who fear flying phobia. Flying wouldn't go to their best friends wedding on an island because they're afraid to fly there so that is the difference in that people. I think you know having a phobia myself people not understanding that we don't WanNa be afraid and we don't own avoid these situations but the fear in our minds out ways the benefit of going to the wedding or going to someone's house with a cat or swimming in the ocean right And I think that that's a great example. Ray because I think if you don't show go with a phobia or you know if you're not really kind of up on like what it means to have a phobia you don't understand how this can impact someone's life so a decision about whether. I'm going to travel to a friend's wedding but I would imagine that even more everyday occurrences may be impacted because of phobias. Can you talk more about? Maybe some of those things that people might not even recognize that they're doing because a phobia is well. One thing is job opportunity so does using a dog example. We've had gift my husband with the Palatine by for Christmas. And they come in and they set that up one of the women who said enough the bike before she entered the home as if they were any pet and of course. We don't have any s a socio constable and I thought about her later. What does she do you know she? She described her dogs. And all of that and I thought about what? What does she do what she goes to? Someone's home and that have. Some people are very protective of their pets. Feel their pets are part of the household and do not want to put them up and so what happens to her in her job. Opportunity you know. Does she quit does she? Avoid one work day or if you you know keep an on employment You know what if you have a fear of elevators height and your offer the opportunity in a building you know in the offices on the floor and sometimes people will avoid not take the job so it really impacts people every day on big decisions such as their jobs. Then you know I think about myself you know the fear. My daughter's school. There was a a cat little neighborhood. Cats that the kids were feeding an address Taking her to school because the cat in everyone will say that You know the castlerock on by the in I really had to. I had to stand across the street and ask someone else Walker in the building because I was terrified. Yes even everyday things like that like you mentioned that you just might not even think about but that takes so much of your like emotional energy and really I would imagine it also impact your mood for the rest of the right. Yes and just the thought of having to face this you know once I realized with the cat that okay. This cat is going to be around. And they're feeding the cat. Every morning I woke up with this dread of taking my daughter to school. Because I'm thinking about this cat you know Thing ABOUT PHOBIAS. That it overtakes our thoughts and we're constantly thinking about it and worrying about it and like you said you know expanding that emotional energy on something that really when we think about it is anything that we really shouldn't be afraid of I mean but of course that's the way that anxiety works right. Is that even though if you are not struggling with anxiety the threat me look like it's not an actual threat but in your mind he's very much like a real threat exactly. Yeah Yeah. And that's the part. I think that is often misunderstood. If you're somebody who has struggled with anxiety in one way or another it may feel like oh just go bring your daughter to school right like the kid is not going to bother you but in your mind it feels like a very real kind of a risk in a threat situation. Yes that's from. Our flight and fight response is that we feel. We'RE IN DANGER. And we will have physical symptoms when we are experiencing or exposed to that threat of the phone via you know we may feel our heart rate elevated may sweat we may you know. Have all types of physical symptoms because of it.

"On ESPN radio presented by Palatine. Chicago's king on ESPN one thousand and ESPN Chicago dot com. Welcome back in. We're gonna talk some basketball and a little bit Maliki Andrews is gonna join us from ESPN, crisp black Adam dollar, Fred Hubner hair till noon. We'll also talk with. Eric head home around a little after eleven o'clock. The Tribune today front page of the Tribune. And I know some people look at it online as big thing. And of course, they were doing bears worst. The I two cursed was is what it says holy enough of the guys here. All right. And the reason it says that is since realignment only six of twenty three teams that make a big turnaround followed that with another playoff berth only four of those six defended division titles. So they're saying, which something we know. It's not easy. I mean think about it the Rams and the eagles didn't the eagles last year ago worst to first and the Rams did I think I think the worst of I last year. And now there's bolt still involved in the playoffs. So they've both done very well. But it's not easy. And a lot of times it comes down to. And I know Mike Golic mentioned it. It's hard for the bears who had thirty six or thirty seven takeaways. You can't predict that you're going to have. Of that again. There's no way to practice. Let's let's let's keep those takeaways up. You're gonna try. You can't guarantee that this team is going to be as health housing last year. They got very I know in the playoff game. They didn't have trae burn ready Jackson. But ultimately for the season they were one of the healthiest teams in the NFL after being one of the unhealthiest teams in the NFL to two years prior. Did it bother you that Eddie Jackson was dressed in standing on the sideline. No because they had the roster spot open. And if the tree Burton would have dressed he wouldn't have dressed. Okay. But the dress the why don't you dress Giovanni whims? Or I don't know Kevin white or somebody else that actually could go on the field because it was apparent that? Eddie Jackson could not go on the field. So why haven't been uniform? You know what I'm saying? Yeah. I mean, I don't understand what the point was that much. Have driven wins in there. It may not have budgeted Williams caught four passes was a week or two before that. And I mean would at least giving you another guy 'cause Eddie Jackson. In the sideline and pound his helmet on the ground a couple of times. Yeah. And I love Eddie Jackson. I was hoping he'd be ready to play. We were all hoping for the last three weeks if he'd be ready to play and he wasn't and now that obviously was huge too. So I'm so thinking about your stat. I'm sorry. Sue team. Jacksonville's a team that was in the playoffs that finished last this season. Right. That's the one team. Yeah. Then bounce back to the bottom. And as we go forward in each and every year fried. It's not guaranteed. Now. They've got a great. I mean, the trivia has got a great graph in the middle. They do each and every year all the way back, and it's it's actually very cool. It says worst to first four of Twenty-three worst. I to I four of Twenty-three up that means someone has to come back down. Right. So Jacksonville was a team that went from I getting to the NFC championship game. And then bouncing back to the bottom. I'm looking at the teams in the playoffs this year, if we had to guess who's the most likely team to bounce back down into the bottom who was in the playoffs this season. Would it be perhaps Dallas is it either Houston or indie? It could be Houston. Baltimore. Or well. Hatreds? Do you think do you think the Lamar Jackson is going to be able to continue? See that's the problem with with the ravens is you can't play like that forever. You wouldn't think? So no, I would assume that the charges in the chiefs are probably going to be pretty good next year. Right. The colts seem like they've kind of figure things out the Texans. Yeah. Defense maybe getting a little old. They're going to get a better running game NFC. I mean, the eagles with Carson Wentz healthy, you would think they're still going to be the best team in the NFC east going forward in the NFC north. I think we all agree that the bears should be the best team in the future rankings as we're doing it here. The saints. We all think we'll get to the Super Bowl probably and then in Seattle and the Rams in the NFC west see like that's why it's so tough. Because I don't think anyone this time. Last year would have said Jacksonville is going to be a last placed team next year that not before their playoff loss. No wonder playoff loss. They looked really bad. Their secondary was really bad in their playoff loss. I thought you know, the the writing was on the WALDO because they were so heavily reliant on that defense and turnovers and their quarterback was trash. And so then you spin it forward to this season, and you get into the year, and the turnovers don't come to you like they did the year before because you're playing a tougher schedule because you have her first place schedule, and then now the defense takes a step back a little bit more Moore's relying on the quarterback is a quarterback good enough to take you forward. And that's where you get Jacksonville being a last place team in all kinds of snowballed on them. So what team like I would say. It's probably the ravens right because I don't think Lamar. Jackson is a stud quarterback. I think he was good enough to get them through the end of the season. But I don't trust him going forward that has to be the team. Right. Well, then I don't see like the Steelers aren't going anywhere. The Bengals might be better. Cleveland's on the coming. The Steelers the Steelers the suicide either, but the Browns should be good going forward. Yeah. And if you look in the NFC, I think the Seahawks to me, I don't know if they're going to be worst. They're going to go first to where they're gonna go like the Muslims are flimsy for the Seahawks. Needs to be really good at what they do. And if they have any issue to like injuries, or you know, whatever takes case that that may not be the team that forty Niners should be better. One thousand nine hundred could make the playoffs. I mean, you've got the falcons the Redskins. The falcons should be in the playoffs. Again next year. You would think with all of the the offensive firepower that they have that they should be able to make the playoffs next year. That this. They just. Agree with you on that. I. The eleven o'clock hour, we'll talk Derek Ed hope, but will also take a look, and I don't see anybody. We'll also take a look at who you think may go from worst to first because I'm looking here last year for last year this year we Texans in the bears this year. I don't see anybody. One team and that team may get a quarterback early in the draft. And that that's the team. I would I would put my money on. We'll talk about that eleven o'clock hour, we come back some hopes Maliki Andrews will join us. We'll talk some bowls, and we'll talk a lot of other things. We'll talk about the we may even get into the fan voting in the NBA playoffs are NBA all star game. That's always a fun thing for Derrick rose.
