So some guys who are associated with these franchise and some that I had to do a double take and remind myself that they actually played for them because the Jim Edmonds Padres career lasted 26 games and the Jim Edmonds red's career lasted 13 games. So that's a pretty good trivia answer. I don't know how many people would have gotten that, but if you did, congrats. And then the first batter to have played for both teams was Tony Gonzalez, who completed the duo in 1969, and the pitchers were Jack ball shun, Jack, you can't shun the ball, you're a pitcher, and Billy mccool. Billy mccool also in 1969. That's when the Padres started. Okay, that will do it for today and this week. Good point, Eric appreciate the clarification. Also, one small but important correction to make on our last episode I conflated two different Seinfeld episodes. I can see why I made this mistake, but the episode where George Costanza tries to leave meetings and rooms and go out on a high note. Also, we did a stat blast last time about ichiro Cano and how high a combined career war total you can make, taking major leaguers and adding up the highest war ever produced by someone with the same first name and the highest war produced by someone with the same last name. We noted that the highest ever is Alex Cobb, who combines Alex Rodriguez's war and Ty Cobb's war. I haven't confirmed this with frequent step last consultant Ryan Nelson, but it seems like on the spreadsheet he put together someone noticed Cy Young has been shorted some war. He appears to have been undercounted, and if that is the case, then Alex Cobb probably should not be first, it should be the guy we thought was third, babe young, his baby young gets a 181 war from Babe Ruth and then a 131.5 from Cy Young for a total of 312.5 war that would put him first by a fair amount. Of course, Cano himself doesn't rank very highly on the combined war list because he only gets credit for Robinson torinos and Jose Cano in Torino's sub replacement level. Anyway, we went from that stat last to a past blast about Jackie Robinson. And this is not an error, but an oversight. What I should ever could have noted is that Robinson Cano himself is named after Jackie Robinson. Hate to miss an obvious segue so I've been kicking myself just like George was when he couldn't come up with the jerk store line in time. And lastly, I'll read you an email we got from listener Chris W, who writes I'm listening to episode 1981 while eating ice cream in a room illuminated by a single black light. I am not, however, currently high, a fact that I'm sure may come as a surprise to cut to the chase. I think the answer to the question you received about how big the bases would need to be before baseball radically changes is 45 inches. Hear me out. Google tells me that an average 6 foot man has arms that are 35 to 37 inches. If we add a little more to account for greater athleticism, that means that a 45 inch base would be longer than the reach of most typical fielders, a first baseman might not be able to hold the runner on as easily because the runner could avoid the reach of the tag. It also means that fielding a position could be greatly altered because a first baseman couldn't hug the foul line with a 45 inch base as they'd be unable to tag the runner on a pick off, depending on how the longer bases affect the base pass, having 45 inch bases could drastically change rundowns with a wider base path, maybe say twice the size of the current one. The runner would have the latitude to spin and juke around tags, as well as modulate their path to the base such that they made sure they came in contact with the ball as it was being thrown from Fielder to Fielder. So there you have it, my black light ice cream fueled take this all goes to crap, of course, if home is counted as one of the bases, that were the case literally one extra inch of width at home plate would mean that every picture with a decent sweeper would become Greg Maddux. "Yeah, this might be the tall, the tallest climb that the Padres have to make in terms of retaining a player or going out and getting one. But I did find it interesting. My antennas went up hearing solo. I think it was yesterday, say that he's open to having extension talks. That's not something you that's not the kind of talk you normally hear from a Scott Boris client. But you got, you've got Scott speaking very positively of the organization. You got Soto saying he's interested. You're right. We can't put anything past the Padres at this point because I think they've really changed the way we look at the organization now when it comes to acquiring or signing players. Amazing, yes, so told me that they are open and they're waiting and I'm sure it's not going to be a long wait, you know, season starts now in less than a month. So, you know, they're going to reach out and Scott was very positive about the Padres. I'm sure he loves what they're doing overall. I think he said they moved a mountain and it's called much more fresh more, yeah. Much more. I'll tell you what. It's time to come up with this stuff, but he did, that said, those are nice words. It is still Scott Boris, it still is one Soto. You know, we'll see. I mean, it's going to be a huge number. We know we already turned down $440 million. So that's the starting point at this point. You can't offer less than that, although, you know, you obviously there's a little transition getting there, but he looks good now. So I think they love him. They gave up 5 players, young players for him, and they'll make every effort, but, you know, sometimes trying isn't quite enough. We'll see. Yeah, it's also important to remember free agency is two years away for once. So this is his platform here. And for those who may not be familiar with the term, this is really like the most important year before you get into free agency. So I'm sure the chips will fall where they are and I think Juan Soto and Scotty B will kind of let that happen. We'll see how that kind of situation changes. Obviously this year, a little bit different.

"Time baseball. Do you expect any movement during spring training in terms of trades? Because I remember last year there were a couple of trades before the season started. I know the Padres were in on a couple of different ones. I think mania came over the day a couple of weeks before spring training in it and then you had you had Rogers come over from Minnesota. I think it was the day of opening day. You expect any deals to happen during spring training? Well, you can't put anything past the age of probably might be. You have to do anything at any time. And the big name that's still out there is Brian Reynolds, center Fielder from the pirates who's requested a trade. He was offered a 6 year deal for about 76 million with no opt out. So it was better than the Murphy deal that Murphy signed with the braves, you know, it's probably a little light, but apparently they have a major gap and, you know, he wants to be dealt and this agency has used his playbook before and real Muto was dealt when he wasn't happy with the way the negotiations were going to Marlins. It took a year though in that case. A lot of people think maybe at the deadline is a possibility because the pirates, you know, they don't want to make a trade where they're taking a step back. You know, their fans, not too happy. I bet. It was nice. They brought mccutcheon back. That's a nice present. That's a good gift for the fans. Rich hill, but I mean, obviously this is in a youth movement. I love richel, but you know, they did some things. So give them credit for that. But, you know, they have some and they have some players too. I mean, T Brian Hayes, very good. I think O'Neil Cruz is going to be a really good player. And with Reynolds, so and they're not in a great division. I mean, they don't look like they could contend against St. Louis, Milwaukee and maybe the cubs, but I still don't think they're going to trade him in spring training, but that's the big name that's out there and being talked about. Other teams are saying they're asking for a solo like trade. I can't see anybody giving up that kind of prospect stash Reynolds really good players center Fielder, good, bad. I mean, he's not solo. I mean, there's a reason sono turned down 440 million and he turned down 76 million. That's a big gap, right? So there you go. Deal coming for them. But, you know, two good prospects, you know, that's fair, but I just think that I'm going to say they keep him at least into the deadline. I'd be remiss if I didn't talk a little bit about the Padres here as we get ready to head into spring train and have to be one of the favorites in the national league to come out of it. I think about it takes me back to the NLCS. I think the Phillies, they got better during this off season. I think the Padres got better during this off season. Let's start with the Padres. Do you see this team as one of the favorites coming out of the national league? Oh, they got to be. I mean, to me there, the clear favor in the west, and that's something. I know that beat the Dodgers in the playoffs, but the Dodgers clearly were a better team last year. They're clearly was a gap. Dodgers want to under 11 games. I mean, I'm not sure what went on there. Why are they let so many guys go? Didn't really make an attempt to sign the one thing they did try to do was design Verlander and they offered somewhere in the 70, 75 million range. I believe. So they were outbid there for Verlander, but other than that, the Dodgers, you know, made smaller deals, JD Martinez, and then they let so many guys leave obviously trade Turner and Justin Turner, two of the big ones, Tyler Anderson. Their payroll is going to be down in this day and age down like 60, 70 million, and they're going to have to and that's including paying 20 something million for Bauer that they're going to have to pay this year. So today end up getting underneath the threshold? No, they are over the threshold. That was, I don't know if that was a goal, but it seemed like they wanted to get the payroll down. They spent so much last year with very disappointed to lose to their rival, Padres after you saw it. They beat the Padres silly in the regular season, and then when it counted, Padres were fantastic and knocked them out. So, you know, they look like they're going to be a 90, something when team instead of under 11 when team, but clearly they're always a threat. But the Padres, I mean, you know, it just seems like there's some guys some owners right now. We have that era where there are a few owners that just will do anything to win. The Padres and the Phillies, the two teams, and they were rewarded for doing this, and they're continuing to do it. Phillies beat their, they built their team on free agency. You know, people say, oh, you can't build your team. You got to build your team from within, they built that team on free agency, and got to the World Series. So he's continuing with that to get Turner from the Dodgers and kimbrell and Taiwan walker. I mean, they did a ton, and they look really

"Again last night and Carlos will go headed to the Yankees. We got a whole host of things to get you. We haven't talked since the beginning of winter meetings, and a whole slew of moves have gone down since then. I mean, welcome in my partner, John hayman, John. You were pretty busy man. Darren winter meetings and it hasn't really stopped for you. Even after you've gone home. Yeah, absolutely not. I mean, 8 out of the 9 top players on the free agent market are now signed. We still just have dansby Swanson left. He's in an outstanding position. Obviously, as the lone superstar left standing and he should do quite well, number of teams in there probably the Red Sox Dodgers, cubs, graves, old team, but Fast & Furious at the winter meetings, your Padres did big stuff once again, not sure how they can do it, but more power to them and, you know, those owners that want to spend that want to win, Middleton and Philly, sidler and San Diego. And obviously, Steve Cohen, with the mets, doing great stuff to help in their teams. You gotta throw you gotta throw howling there as well. He's not. He's not just standing by and letting things happen. Well, we'll get to Swanson in a little bit here because he's, as you said, the loan really remaining superstar on the free agent docket. But a lot of things went down. We'll start with Xander bogarts, because I think out of all of the moves, probably the most surprising Padres just, I don't know, they're printing money somewhere. And they gave us, they gave a truckload of it to Xander Bogart who I think is a fantastic player. I think he fits in very well. What was your reaction to Xander Bogart said in San Diego? Well, the figure was a little bit surprising, obviously, and the fact that San Diego was able to do it. You know, go back 8, 9 years ago, remember when they couldn't afford to keep chase headley. Now they've got four superstars on the team. You know, that's as many as anybody. Incredible job. They've obviously boosted the revenue and they're hoping that the revenue can keep pace with the expenditures. You know, I think people in MLB are not sure that they're going to be able to do it. They're probably going to lose money. Obviously excited that town you're there. I was only there for a few days, and it was just in the hotel. You've actually been out in the town, so you know. And you know, it was exciting, obviously. We saw last year, I saw it on TV, all the great stuff that goes on at Padres games. And you know, they're about to go to 23,000 season tickets and probably will sell out the season. I'm not sure that, as I said, the revenue is going to match the expenditures, but I give Peter seidler and company credit for going out and doing whatever they can to try to win. How do you think that deal all came down? Because the Padres were in on everybody, it seemed like they were in on trade Turner. They were in on Aaron judge. And then they pivot as quickly as you possibly could because that all happened in like a three day span. They pivot to Bogart's and as you said in terms of what the market, it seems like they kind of went over the top there, but maybe they had to do so in order to get them in that padre uniform. How do you think that deal went down? Yeah, well, I mean, from the Padres perspective, they had that 11th hour meeting with Aaron judge. They knew it was a long shot. I understanding as they were willing to go to $414 million, a record for 14 years. They knew that it was going to be tough to beat out the Yankees with the legacy and it was already out there. San Francisco was at 360 million and, you know, they tried to win him with money and obviously there's a lot to offer in San Diego. It's America's finest city, as you know, but they have a terrific team with great players, but obviously the Yankee legacy ended up being very tough to beat. They tried with Trey Turner or freedom 342 million, a million more than Lindor, 2 million more than tatis. And Trey Turner, as we heard all along, preferred to be on the east coast. I went to Philadelphia where he re team with Bryce Harper hitting coach there, Kevin long, so he knew some people from the Nats and, you know, it was interesting that AJ preller, the most aggressive GM went back after Turner, tried to get him. As soon as he traded him when he got there, he tried to get him back. He did. Forever. And even recently, there's a couple of years ago when he went to the Dodgers, try it again. You know, you usually can get his man. 'cause they're willing to spend and he's willing to give a prospect, but never got Drake Turner back and he's got an 11 year deer deal now, so they won't be getting him, but they wanted to get somebody great. And they did. It's a great player. It seems like they blew away the field. My understanding of the Red Sox were around 28 million a year for 6 years, 9 11 years. It wasn't very close. I think the cubs were in there a little bit, but sandy, I want to make sure that they got them and they boy, they have some they have a lot of great short stops. I'll say that. It's a collection of superstars and shortstops. One of the main questions here in San Diego that I get asked a lot is where is the money coming? And what I tell people is, don't worry about where the money's coming from. Enjoy this while it lasts because it's hard to imagine it will last forever. And so, you know, being a San Diego and my whole life, I'm going to take the road of just sitting back and enjoying it because this is really something we've never seen. You brought up something that you starting to hear a lot about the shortstops. And how it all fits. The one thing that to every person I've talked to about Xander bogarts, a lot of it, I mean, obviously he's an extremely talented player, but you hear so much about the person he is off the field and in the locker room, that may have been part of the reasons why the Padres felt like they had to go over the top because I know AJ covets guys who are good locker room guys. And by all accounts, everybody I've talked to John Xander bogarts is that guy. Yeah, he's clearly a leader was certainly with the Red Sox and the fans are very, very disappointed in Boston. I think right now they're trying to lock up Devers, they need to do something for the fans. And now they've lost bogarts. So they better keep Devers, a lot of pressure on them, and they're trying. And I think there's some optimism there that they might get something done. And now, considering at least Swanson to replace Bogart said shortstop, that would be nice for the fans as well. And, you know, Boston doesn't always go by fan reaction, but at this point, I think, you know, they're going to have to think about that because right now the fan reaction is rough in Boston. Yeah, they are almost in a similar pace that the Giants were going to be if they didn't end up signing Korea. We'll get to him in a second. I want to go back to Turner because obviously, as you mentioned, he turned down more money to play some place where he was comfortable. You know, his wife is from New Jersey, right out across the bridge. There next to Philly. But, you know, I think about this Philly office.

So I mean, that's going to see if they could tread water, do stay where they are until then that being fantastic shape, but they keep winning. You know, McGill should be back fairly soon. Obviously walker's been good. Carrasco's been good. You've got Peterson. They fucked up those question or at least we did and their death has been very, very good. Bucks done a great job. But this team is currently sitting in the third place thought I can't imagine that this team couldn't do a little bit better, especially with that staff that they have over there in this somewhat down NL east at the moment. I mean, for the Marlins, they went out for them. It was spending. They didn't want to sign a $100 billion guy Castellanos, but they signed 50 million for obvious sale, Garcia, and they spent 36 million for solar. They picked up a couple of relievers from the Orioles. I liked what they did. They looked really good in spring training. I think maybe they have more in them. They're pitching as excellent Pablo Lopez has been one of the best in the league, along with all the so, you know, I think again, the underachieving. I think it's other than the match. It's a division of underachievers right now. I think the Marlins are probably better than their record is shown and same with the Philly, same with the brakes. It's been a mess year so far.
