Feinstein's death leaves Senate Democrats with no margin for error, a functional majority of just 50 seats. But while Newsom has done it before, he's openly said, before Feinstein's death, he did not want the task of replacing her. Nonetheless, Newsom promised in 2021, as concerns grew about Feinstein's health, that he would appoint a black woman. He's also promised to avoid the field of candidates already running for Feinstein's seat, which was set to expire at the end of next year. That field includes Representative Barbara Lee, one of the state's prominent most black elected officials. Should he follow through on both pledges, names are already being floated who for might serve as a true caretaker, who would be replaced by whomever wins next year's election. "All right. The reality is I came from a family of service. So my dad served, I grew up listening to the stories of my grandfather's on both sides, served in World War II. My great uncle was killed in World War II. He was a pilot, flew in the Pacific theater and was shot down. My grandmother, my dad's dad was a very decorated B -24 pilot. And I remember learning stories about him as a kid. You know, flew all 25 of his missions, seven air medals, distinguished flying cross, actually crash landed. They got shot down and he managed to crash land his plane in a snow field in Yugoslavia. And he and his team, he baited back to Italy. Everybody made it back. So he got the distinguished flying cross for that. So I just grew up with this, from a young age, all I ever wanted to do was be on the military. I wanted to be a pilot. I started out with that. I saw Top Gun and I was like, dude, I am so Tom Cruise. Top Gun is the equivalent of guys that go into DEA watch. I watched Miami Vice. I want to be Sonny Crockett. Damn right. See, if I had been a little bit younger, you know, Miami Vice, I was right on the cusp. But Top Gun, 11 years old, saw that movie. I was like, my grandfather was a pilot. I'm going to be a pilot. There you go. don't And I know, somewhere a couple of years later, 13, 12, 13 time frame years old, we lived on a farm in North Carolina. I liked being outside. I liked running around in the woods. And I got another North Carolina guy. We were just talking about Kevin Holland and his pa. I'm going to have to ask you about the carrying a log too, you lumberjack. OK. Well, you know, I blossomed late. So I was probably carrying a stick, you know. I mean, it wasn't quite a log then. Where at in North Carolina? Down south of Fort Bragg, a little town called Lumberton.

"Until, you know, it was a 20 -day fight before the Marines could finally write back to General Pershing and say... Bella Wood. Bella Wood is entirely in Marine Corps, right? That was a long fight. And it was a fight where many lessons were learned in blood. The Marine Corps sustained, as you mentioned earlier, more casualties on June 6th, 1918, than the entire service had sustained at that point. And it's nearly, and it's 143 years of existence. More casualties in a single day. It's, there aren't words for that. I, and that's where, you know, as I was going through this battle, I mean, you know, I really appreciated your input. And I could see, even as an outsider, just what a massive molding, shaping, you know, formative event this clearly played for the Corps. And, you know, we talked about the legend that it became, this fight became. As I mentioned earlier, history is written by the victor. Right. This was not a beautiful fight. This was an ugly fight full of failures on behalf of the Marine Corps. Failures that led to lessons, but they also led to the creation of what would become known as the Old Breed of Marines. You know, I've mentioned these legendary Marines that were at the fight in Belleau Wood. They became known as the Old Breed. So let me recommend a book by Eugene Sledge called With the Old Breed that documents his account of the Pacific Theater in World War II. But Eugene Sledge fought with, you know, the old crusty Marines that led the campaign in the Pacific were 19 and 20 year old kids fighting in the wheat fields and forests of France. And the Old Breed became legendary. And there's still an Old Breed in the Marine Corps. It's always that old generation. You know, for here in 2023, the Old Breed are the Marines who fought in Ramadi. In 2003, or we're in on the march to Baghdad and they're full chemical gear in the back of an amphibious assault vehicle sweating like you wouldn't believe in march in Iraq, right?

"Germany had to recognize the independence of Poland and the new republic of Czechoslovakia, which was to its south. And they seated parts of upper salacia, which is a part of central Germany to Poland as a corridor to the Baltic Sea. East and west pressure were separated by this corridor. Other small territories were ceded to Belgium, Czechoslovakia and Denmark. Germany's African positions were handed over to the new League of Nations, but they were mostly taken over by Britain and South Africa, while their possessions in the central Pacific and its tree port in China were taken over by Japan. In South Pacific possessions were taken over by Australia. And its general staff was dissolved and banned. The navy was restricted in size to 6 old battleships, a few cruisers and destroyers and submarines were expressly forbidden. The submarines had been a major thorn in the British and allied side all throughout World War I. So we're going to just do away with submarines. I'm sure that's going to work great. Anyway, the air force was prohibited as well. The Rhineland was to be completely demilitarized, and all fortifications within 30 miles of the river were to be demolished.

Out in our kind of my neck of the Woods. Hey, but real quickly to talk about the difference in the seal teams. Do they have different missions? Are they aligned differently? Does everybody expect? Because everybody hears about SEAL Team 6, but you know, but is everything structured the same? Or are there different things based upon the team you go to? So the different teams have different areas of operation. AO is what you call it. And seal teammate was Africa. And so you've got different SEAL Team twos Europe. SEAL Team four is like South America. Central South America. And then the West Coast teams are more, you know, the whole Asia Pacific theater. So, but as far as and you know, of course, they're going to be more jungle. Then you're talking about seal teammate, which is not going to be jungle. It's more days or so, but as far as the training goes, it's all pretty much the same, you know what I mean? You're learning how to jump out of planes and to rig boats and go to be able to rebuild outboard motors, get them to run after they've come out of a helicopter and flipped upside down in the water. You're just doing a workup to do your deployment. Once you get to a SEAL Team. So your wish list did really mean a whole lot too. Nope, it didn't mean anything. Does that sound familiar? How many people we talked to? I wanted to go here here at the buffalo. It was just like, yep, your whole class is going to teammate. And they were in trailers at little creek at the time. As because in the franco was the franco prussian war when the russians came through and they basically more or less humiliated france and it was like the eighteen sixties. Although my dates are because you know. I'm just remembering this run. Somebody else telling me this right But they made him on a peace accord. That was very humiliating to the french. In the hall of mirrors and people talk about the treaty oversight being totally just so over the top against the germans. And that's one of the reasons it was like that and it also had its consequence a lot of people think that the consequences of that and the i don't know if they're called sanctions or whatever the the remedies that were provided for in that where germany had to pay so much and do certain things is what led to the rise of something like you know. The national socialist moves here which was competing with the communist movement. They're actually And that's you know that's that's where that stuff comes in but you but you're right. I think that. I think there's there's good reasons to go to war. I mean i think there's sometimes you have to go world war. One is a very tough question because the germans were the aggressors in that war. I mean they. They were but it wasn't the way it wasn't like the germans then were not nazis. Okay they were not nazis and It wasn't the the nazi party you know during the blitz craig and all that stuff man you know. They did have a way that they wanted to go out there but it was completely different war different thing and have you listened to the new ones that he has on japan. No on sundays on the world war two but is just focuses on the pacific theater. Okay all it's brutal stuff. Yeah it's brutal stuff. I think that. I'm probably gonna get this wrong but i'll i'll try to be as accurate can in the eastern front in the european more hundreds of thousands if not millions of people are taking you know as prisoners war and In the pacific theater. I should say the your pantheon pacific theater. Thanks what they call it. But in the pacific theater yeah. It wasn't the front because the front is like in europe. There were two front so it will be the jury in the pacific theater in the pacific theater. I believe that I think we took less than ten prisoners award. If the japanese they didn't surrender ever and that thing was bloody over there wasn't the same. It was just something vicious. We're just talking about world war one and it was just just nasty nasty stuff and that's will war is and i don't think we should never lose sight of that but i also think there's good reasons to go to war. I mean you know in in certain situations you just gotta find them and you.

"The town of portugal is located on this assume estuary which flows into the north end of the san francisco bay about a mile from where the town was located. Was one of the primary munitions facilities for the united states pacific theater. The portugal naval magazine later renamed the concord naval weapons station during world war. Two the facility served as an armaments depot for munitions that were going to support the war in the pacific bombs bullet shells mines torpedoes and all manner of explosives were sent here from production facilities from around the country at portugal. They would be loaded onto ships and sent to other ships thousands of miles away in the nineteen forties the loading and unloading ships was mostly time consuming and manual process. It wasn't like today where everything is in shipping containers and they can be loaded and unloaded without anyone ever touching them in nineteen forty four. There were at least two ships being loaded twenty four hours a day at portugal. The work done at portugal was hard physical labor that was both dangerous and important to the war effort because there weren't enough civilian dockworkers to load the naval ships. The navy had to take over the task and assign sailors to do the work. When the united states entered the war the military was still racially segregated. Black soldiers were not allowed to serve on most ships in the us navy. The assignment given many black enlisted men in the navy was to work at the naval yards unloading and loading supplies at portrait. Kogyo all the enlisted men who were doing the dangerous work of loading explosives were black. And all of the officers who oversaw the operation or white moreover the men assigned as officers. Were not the navy's best. Those officers were out in the pacific or had other duties which were perceived to be more important. The commander of the base was captain merrill kinney he served in the navy and the first world war had left the service twenty years earlier before returning to duty likewise the other officers that portugal were mostly older men who were reserves and had no experience in the handling of munitions. The safety regulations at portugal were poor to nonexistent. Moreover many of the cranes which were used to move munitions on and off the ships were in poor condition as well and often didn't work. The events of concern began on july thirteenth. Nineteen forty four when a liberty ship named the ss ea. Bryant arrived at the dock. Its cargo hold was empty but it had a full load of fuel oil for its trip across the pacific. It held five thousand two hundred and ninety two barrels of fuel oil for four days. The ship was carefully loaded with munitions into its cargo. Hold were loaded. One thousand pound bombs forty.

And my theory that day and date releasing is not doing these movies any favors. I mean, I love The Suicide Squad. But I already had HBO Max. So I watched it at my house. I didn't get in the car and go drive to a movie theater, and maybe if COVID wasn't a factor I would have, but if you want to see Shang-Chi, I believe the only way to see it is in the theater right now. I don't even think you're doing a Disney+ $30 charge up on that one at the moment. No, I think it's theatrical only. I know it's not on my Disney+ welcome screen. So it's got to be the and we're about to see that again with James Bond in like a month or so. Yeah, that's going to be interesting too. James Bond really does pack them in. So it's the number one franchise for MGM. It'll be interesting to see what happens. Yeah, yeah, well in James Bond not getting released last year is part of what is explained to be the demise of Pacific theaters, like a lot of the theater chains were holding out hope for James Bond movie to kind of bring in a giant audience. "Big money changed hands it. I think it was close to five billion dollars or not changed. Yeah did technically changed hands. If you're losing money you're changing money from hand to hand here but it was quite the ride there and i think we're not done yet. But the announcement this morning that they were going to be selling. Eleven million shares caused a little bit of an impact on the price. There was about a twenty percent hike in premarket trading prior to this morning's announcement and then they took a four percent loss which triggered a circuit breaker. And if you don't know what a circuit breaker is it's literally just a pause in the trading of that stock for think it's a predetermined amount of time it's fifteen minutes or by other words is just going crazy right now. It's crazy it's going up it's volatile. It's going all over the place you know. I think what you're seeing here. Is that retail investors. Get a little scared there. They wanted to pull that profit before they saw things disappear when amc decided to announce that they were going to be selling off eleven million shares to it was a capital group. Can't remember who it was off the top my head but you know i think that scares the retail investor when you see that the institutional investors are getting a little bit more. I don't blame them. They'll find amc. And i just come off the worst year and a half ever. I would want to sell off you know. Have that in my kitty as well. I mean that's back up the brinks truck. If that's the case and please do it at the all time high. That would be awesome. I would have done it too but again. That's the way the things are bouncing right. But there's so much interest now in these types of stocks unfortunately the pandemic of closed for good a lot of things as far as the theater chancer that they close the arclight cinemas the pacific theatres chain. Those are closed for good. They're not being brought back only if amc or regal or some other theater chain reopened them under their banner will they be to go ahead and open up and that includes the historic cinema. Dome in hollywood some hoping that somebody will be able to go ahead and open that one up. because that's historical monument to me and filmmaking. Alamo draft house is reopening up. They were on the verge of bankruptcy. Now they're thriving now they're going to open up more theaters..

"All right our first story this week. Amc entertainment has sold two hundred and thirty million dollars in stock in order to go on a buying spree. they're already talking to the landlords of arclight cinemas pacific theatres. some of the movie chains. One of the things that happened in a pandemic or crisis is that some of the small players fall because they don't have enough cash or ability to raise cash to survive while bigger players that either have the cash or the ability to borrow cash and ab- scooping them up and i think that's what we're about to see we're about to see amc gonna buying spree of a bunch of little feeder jane's regionals and things like that that could have individually survived like the crazy thing is so it's not like amc had this money went and raise this money so arkley could also like investors could have just invested straight in arc light instead of investing game see to by arc light but there's this belief among certain investment groups. That bigger is better in there will be efficiencies of scale and like i guess there might be i guess. Amc might be able to get like cheaper popcorn buying it bigger volume and they'll have more powers negotiations with the studios. Here's a line from the from the article on the rap about this we also have coverage on it on no film school but the new deal The recent market surge has enabled the new deal since the eight point. Five million shares represent a small portion of the current trading volume. That's a wall street jargon. This transaction underscores the real value of having some authorized share capital available for us to opportunistically capitalize on shareholder value creation possibilities as and when they arise with our increase liquidity and increasing vaccinated population blah blah blah blah timeframe to go on the offense. So it's sort of like that's part of the the size and scale that affords them the ability to get their hands on this kind of cash quickly to make this kind of deal. That's my reading of that but it sounds like that's the reasoning. Why it's amc. I guess and not having the ability to get that kind of authorized share capital. What that means now. I feel like i need a glossary. Is it always goes back to we. Have this idea that like there are natural forces that are actually the results of design and so the way our stock markets are designed to operate is. They're designed to favor bigger organizations that think in shorter-term increments and so like if we redesigned our stock market. Which like. i don't know how to do. But i'm sure i'm sure there's a lot of people great ideas that favored longer term investments. That paid out money over time and favored smallness instability. It would have been easier for smaller companies to find those direct investments. I remember once. I met an investor and a coffee shop. It's a long story but we're like sitting three in a row and a coffee shop in someone else was like telling like the table next to us. Someone was saying about a need they had. I owned a company that time that provided that i like interrupted their conversation to be like. Oh hey i actually do what you need. You should call me. Give my card and the guy was like that was a really smooth way to do that. And we like a long conversation about sales and wind up people and stuff. And then i tried to put him in an idea and he was like. I'm really not interested in anything. That's not a core technology that will make billions of dollars. And i was like yeah. I don't have any like that. He's like yeah of course but like And it was one of those moments where i was like you know. Investors want tax returns investors. Big you know all of those things and so like does bum me out. That it's like. I really wish that somehow that two hundred like that the market. I don't blame any individual player in this but it would be awesome if our market were designed such that two hundred and thirty billion dollars could just be separately given to each of the individual little movie theater chains to keep doing what they are doing. As opposed to having to be given to one entity that will then go up by all the others and like that's can you realize names e in particular. Yeah yeah no i have. You make really good point. Amazing i think knocking min height myself before i say it but i think i have a really good corollary to industry creative experience in the film making industry. Which is that when you say you're a writer or director and you have a bunch of properties you're working on like ideas and you take a bunch to your manager and agent and they start trying to sell them. They will always take the ideas they think are the most profitable to the biggest companies. Because they're not that interested in small games because they get a small piece. They are interested the first they wanna they want to hunt the biggest game i because they're only going to get a certain amount like the hyenas that they are. Just kidding. 'cause you're doing the hunting right. They're just getting a percent. I'm just kidding they. They're they're whatever hunt you hunt and kill with your you know creative with your manager. Agent that manager agent is getting ten percent fifteen percent so or whatever so that i think the correlation is that amc is for the investor. It's the biggest bet. It's the biggest by. You're going to get the biggest chunk. Your tiny chunk is going to be a bigger chunk whereas if it's small investors then the junk is going to be smaller because the total is smaller. So i think that that's why we see this across all things in business where you know i. I am surprised. Honestly that we haven't seen in all this an amazon decide to buy an amc yet or frankly not just low but that was the other thing that was interesting in. This is like only two hundred and thirty million dollars like there's movies that cost two hundred thirty million dollars like this is too small potatoes for amazon. To care about like amazon's only ever bought two or three things ever and they're all in the billions of dollars range and mike. This is like why doesn't apple. Let's let's like. I wonder aloud. Why just say like hey you know what. Let's by all the movie theater like everywhere like why not right now would be the perfect time to just be like we own movie theaters like if you see a movie theater. You're seeing in an apple theater. Theory i wanna hear it. I'm curious dying model. No because that's no. I don't think i think that anybody. I don't think it's dying model. My grand children will still see movies in theaters. Like what's coming. The only be like one hundred people left on earth. But i think they'll still fire up the movie theater on friday nights. No i mean apple's not buying movie theaters because aesthetically. They're not interested in them. If every movie theatre had been built most in years and all had glass stairways the vast majority of them. They all like spaceships. Yeah the ugliest ones are the most revenue beneficial. The beautiful ones are still not apple. Beautiful right like be addiction. The are still like not anything. Apple is interest the end but then why does it networks netflix's basically in crazy debt. But don't you feel like net flicks would be a really interesting like we own the mood. The we are movies. It's part of our brand like it would be cool if netflix defined its friend beyond just we have a bunch of nasr really in their name though. Yeah yeah that's literally. But then i was on was known for like i'm sorry county just but but the that's true but then the thing with amazon to me. That's amazing is. They started opening bookstores because they were born to destroy the bookstore. None of.

"Existent movie openings at theaters this past weekend shows Cove It didn't kill the box office, ABC News Entertainment reporter Jason Nathan's and joining US and Jason Most of us haven't been out to see a movie in at least a year. But what happened over the weekend? Yeah, it was kind of like when Kevin Costner said in a field of dreams if he didn't say it, But they said, if you build it, they will come if you put the movie theater, the movies in the theater. They will come and we saw that this weekend with a quiet place to and the crew. Alito, the Disney movie, Carella both those together. It's the biggest weekend since the pandemic started. We were very close to $100 million in total. Now. That's off of 2019, which Memorial Day weekend was around $230 million, but still that's a really big recovery from where we were. What we've seen it showing studios that Okay. Now is the time people are starting to go. It's not as dangerous the capacities in the theaters. They're lifting. They're getting bigger. And if you put the big movies in the theaters, you can make your money back. What's been the issue in the in the recent past, would you say, because there weren't enough covert vaccines or where they're putting some weak movies in the theaters and mostly streaming the good new ones? There was kind of this tenant effect. If you remember Tennant last year was the first movie around September to be the first big Hollywood blockbuster to go into theaters. Problem one. We were still in the middle of the pandemic. Nobody had vaccines and nobody wanted to go to the movie. It just was not time. So that's scared all the studios and they said, Look, we're not gonna put out our big stuff because we're not gonna make the money back now. It seems we've we've turned a corner, right? The pandemic. Sure it's not over. But enough people seemingly are vaccinated. The numbers are down the number of hospitalizations air down. Everything seems to be down, and people are just excited to be out shopping and doing kind of returning back to normal life. Movie theaters air Part of that, and the big chains also said last Friday, AMC Cinemark and Regal that if you're vaccinated, you can watch a movie in their theaters without wearing a mask. Now that Z state and local rules those supersede that, whatever the cinema rules are But they're saying if you're vaccinated, you couldn't work out and that that was an impediment. I think for a lot of people, they didn't want to sit in the dark for a couple hours wearing a mask. Well, maybe this will help AMC. But AMC has also been trying to sell a lot of stock recently and has been selling a lot of stock. What's going on with that This was another really good sign today from the theaters in the health of the business and that they see strengthening ahead because AMC they sold 8.5 million shares of stock. For about $230 million not to pay off that not to fund stuff that they've been funding during the pandemic, but to buy more theaters to make acquisitions. There have been so many theaters over the course of this that have sadly had to fold. Pacific theaters are quite here in Los Angeles. Those theaters, they said, that they could no longer operate. But now that's a golden opportunity for AMC to come in and buy some of these prestigious theaters. Just needed the capital. Do so. So selling the stock gives the capital and also sends a big message to the industry's saying, Hey, we're growing. We're not shrinking, and I did watch crew l a over the weekend and thought it was fantastic. Thanks for the review. You're very welcome. It was fantastic. Whether you saw it in theaters or at home, I think either way it was a great movie. ABC is Jason Nathan's in. Thanks, Jason. All right, take care. Come on. News news. Are you ready? Make your best guess Who is it? Who is it Time? The comb. Oh, afternoon.

Iconic Theaters in California to Close Over Pandemic Losses
"The pandemic has cost us a lot, but the hope that someday post vaccine we would return to our favorite places that hope has carried us through the hardest parts of these last 13 months. Well. News came this week that the iconic Arclight cinema and 58 year old Cinerama Dome in Hollywood would not be reopening post pandemic. In fact, the owners of ArcLight Cinemas and Pacific Theater said none of their locations would be reopening. Post Cove it. That's right. What a sad day it is. I know, And we have all spent so many glorious hours at the arc lights, especially the one in Hollywood. Talk about many, and yeah, from your perspective. So it's funny when you're a film critic, especially if you're a freelancer like so many of us are like you don't have an office, right? You watch movies at your house or you right at your house, and so going to the Arc light on a Monday night to see a big studio release, and all your fellow critics were there, and there's a buzz in the audience as people who love film You know, it's It's like going to your favorite office but also your favorite watering hole and there's such a great energy the minute you walked into that lobby with just the job. Soaring feelings and the huge marquee with all the times and the big clock, and you felt like you were walking into a cathedral of swords. Your Brain on Facts
Black Sparrow and Buffalo Soldiers
"Since colonial times African Americans have fought in America's wars. In every war in fact, The first person to die in the revolutionary. War Christmas attics was black. Black soldiers have put their lives on the line for a country that for centuries enslaved segregated and discriminated against them. Until the Korean War black served in segregated units under racist leadership and often relegated to labor and service units. Despite the continuous discriminatory treatment that denied blacks full participation in America's military efforts, these brave men and women lived lives that deserve to be remembered. My Name's Moxy and this is your brain on facts. Possibly the best known all black military unit comes with a bit of mystery in its history. They were called Buffalo soldiers, though there are competing reasons as to why. In eighteen, sixty, six and active congress created six all black peacetime regiments later consolidated into four, the ninth and Tenth Cavalry and the Twenty Fourth and twenty fifth infantry. Initially the Buffalo soldier regiments were commanded by whites with being forbidden from holding the ranks officers. These. Troops often faced extreme racial prejudice from the army establishment. Many officers including George Armstrong custer of boo and a his there. Refused to command black regiments, even though it costs them promotions. Further black troops could only serve west of the Mississippi. River, because many whites didn't want to see armed black men near their communities. It even sometimes happened that the buffalo soldiers suffered deadly violence at the hands of civilians. The Buffalo soldiers main duty was to support the nation's westward expansion by protecting settlers, building roads and other infrastructure and guarding the US mail. They served a variety of posts in the southwestern great planes, taking part in most of the military campaigns during the decades long Indian wars during which they compiled a distinguished record with eighteen buffalo soldiers awarded the Medal of honor. We don't have time today to dwell on the irony of African American soldiers, fighting native people on behalf of government that accepted neither group as equals. The exceptional performance of these soldiers helped to overcome resistance to the idea of black officers paving the way for the first african-american graduate from West Point Henry O flipper. Who will hear more about later? But. Fellow soldiers played significant roles in many other military actions. They took part in defusing the little known eighteen, ninety two Johnson County war in Wyoming, which pitted small farmers against wealthy ranchers and a band of hired gunmen. They also fought in the Spanish American and Philippine American wars and played a key role in maintaining border security during the high intensity, military conflict along the US Mexico border during the Mexican revolution. In Nineteen Eighteen, the tenth cavalry fought at the Battle of ambos Nogales where they assisted enforcing the of the Mexican federal and militia forces. Discrimination played a role in diminishing the buffalo soldiers involvement in upcoming major conflicts. During world. War One the racist policies of President Woodrow Wilson among whose claims to infamy include segregating federal offices led to black regiments, being excluded from the American Expeditionary Force, and placed under French command for the duration of the war. The first time ever that American troops were placed under the command of a foreign power. Then prior to World War Two, the ninth and Tenth Cavalry Regiments were essentially disbanded, and most of their troops moved to service roles. However the Ninety Second Infantry Division known as the Buffalo Division did see combat during the invasion of Italy while another division that included the original Buffalo Soldiers of the twenty fifth infantry. Regiment fought in the Pacific theater. The last segregated. US Army regiments were disbanded in nineteen,
