Fresh update on "pac" discussed on Broncos Country Tonight
"State of Florida. The Trump campaign knows if they lose the state of Florida they are likely to lose the entire election. But in the final stretch of the campaign, the president is on defense, spending most of his time campaigning in states like Florida that he won back in 2016, but Democrats are hoping That they can steal this state. In fact, tomorrow, former President Barack Obama will be here in Florida Campaigning for Joe Biden, that is a B C's. Rachel Scott President Trump Rallying in Florida Tate today Joe Biden, speaking earlier from Delaware, outlining his plan for battling the Corona virus pandemic if he is elected president. In sports. Big attend football starting tonight and a CSU's game against New Mexico canceled it tomorrow because of New Mexico, not New Mexico not being able to travel to CSU for the game. Other mountain West. Teams do play football tomorrow. The pack tip the Pac 12 rather starts.
Political Ad Nauseam
"As much as campaigns want to keep spending secret federal law actually requires TV stations around the country to disclose all the political ads, the campaigns by and those TV ads account for something in the ballpark of sixty percent of campaign ads. Spending a lot of the rest is stuff like Google and facebook ads at those companies actually don't have to disclose as much information about the ads. So today we're going to focus on. TV. Spending the majority of the spending. So think of the United States as a giant game board to campaigns walk around the board they put some of their ad money down this part. Of the country a little bit more over here, and the way they put that money down tells us what places they think are most important for winning the election. If you're looking just at the state level, the bronze medal goes to Wisconsin Sixty, four, million dollars, worth of TV ads they're not surprising. Wisconsin was one of those states that trump flipped from the democratic column back in Two Thousand Sixteen Silver Medal Pennsylvania with one hundred, seven, million dollars worth of TV ads also not surprising Purple State with twenty electoral votes and in first place with one. Hundred thirty, three, million dollars America's favorite election meltdown waiting. Oh Florida, my beloved Florida. Now, this is just are beginning calculation. We're going to dig in more, but there are lessons to learn just looking at the big picture the big campaign game board. Yes. So so take Florida this is not a monolithic place. You're going to have super republican areas like the panhandle and then big democratic areas around places like Miami and you might imagine that the most. Cost effective thing is for the Republicans to completely pull out of the democratic strongholds and vice versa. But in fact, neither political party is doing that the whole state is getting bombarded with ads from both sides Daniel. Butterfield. From the Super PAC PRIORITIES USA she says it can start to turn into something like an arms race. So when you see your opponent spending money in a market, it really raises The question of should I be spending money there to to keep up area competitive and if you want to understand why political spending just keeps going up, it's at least partly because of his arms race if your opponents bins more in, Tampa you have to spend more in Tampa which in turn makes the cost of ads in. Tampa that much more expensive. Next thing you know you blue one. Hundred thirty, three, million dollars in Florida. Danielle says, the arms race thing is not just irrational fear. There's a real electoral cost to waving the white flag in a particular area. If you're in an ad market and your opponent clears out, that is great news for you. You have the airwaves to yourself. Your advertising goes a lot further in terms of impact than if you have to opponents that are. Driving opposite messages is there like a particular tipping point to that that sort of campaign folks like you gotTa. Spend the twenty percent otherwise. Like what counts as as not being drowned out. Good? Yeah. There is actually a lot of areas some data behind like what is the particular percentage that is required? It's I'd say that's probably more of a secret sauce that I wouldn't necessarily WanNa name on this podcast for you know that numbers, you're just tell me. I I. Know. Roughly what percentage I think is useful is, is it twenty three percent? You got it. But okay. So fine lots of money being spent in Florida but this is not a very specific answer to our question who is the most expensive voter we want to be more granular, which is why we got her hands on a more precise data set. Thank you advertising analytics. This data set is GonNa let zoom in on every single television market in the entire country. So for example, we know that forty million dollars has been spent in the Orlando Daytona. Beach Melbourne market. Compare that to the grand rapids, Kalamazoo Battle Creek Michigan market where it's twelve million dollars and sure there's more people in Orlando but still, how are the campaigns arriving at exactly forty million and exactly twelve million to help answer that we brought in some help Michael Beach. CEO. Crushing Media Michael Runs an advertising analytics company now, but he has worked in the past for the presidential campaigns of George W Bush John McCain Mitt Romney, and the reason we wanted to talk to Michael is his whole job. is to figure out where companies or sometimes political campaigns should place millions of dollars. Worth of ads Michael has all this fancy proprietary software. If you're an advertiser, he can tell you whether you should be focusing your ads on like Republicans, with Minivans are Democrats ride motorcycles or neither. He's got all these different attributes in his computer thousands of attributes for. Anything from certain partisanship to likelihood to buy a Ford truck into those do those specific categories correlate. Yes and no it like it's pretty geographic if you're looking at northeast, Ohio or you're you know. You're in Alabama in the Senate race. that. Wouldn't be a probably a good signal. Reich is like. As owner everyone drive structure. Now, the reason we went to Michael is because we thought it might be interesting to look at how many dollars were being spent on any given swing voter swing voters in theory are people who might be influenced by a political ad. The problem is it is very hard to pin down exactly how many of these people are out there but Michael Software can at least take a stab at it what is GonNa do is go through all these data sets to first identify how many likely voters there are in a particular TV market and then identify which of those has even the tiniest probability of changing their vote and a lot of this calculation is just sifting out the diehards. If you are somebody who voted in the last five, Democratic primaries were every year you donate to the R. N. C. You are out. But maybe your party affiliation switched a couple of times. Maybe you're a first time voter that may put you in this bucket the basically using generic party model and generic it's party not not candidate. Driven in other words, we're estimating voters chances to swing between Democrat and Republican as opposed to trump and biden specifically. But there's still does give us a way to compare across TV markets and when you re ranked the country based on dollars spent per swing voter the markets are not in Florida. In fact, the top five ad markets are all in Pennsylvania and number one on that list where campaigns are spending around ninety dollars per likely swing voter. Is My home television market the region in western Pennsylvania in and around Erie Pennsylvania. Okay. So Kenny you grew up there like what is it? What is the what are we talking about just to be clear I grew up in Meadville which is south of Erie, but it's in the market and like yeah, this is a region with a lot of manufacturing jobs these jobs have been leaving. It's predominantly white its having the. Same kind of brain drain problem that a lot of the other parts of the so-called rust belt are having. But look like I don't know anything about who a potential swing voter would be in the Erie television market. This is why we have Michael's fancy software. It can help us understand who that is. What can we know about the Eerie Market area? How does it compare to the rest of the country? Like who's there? It opened up my magic machine here. Michael Punches Eerie plugs in a few numbers so it's running. Then he opens up a tab that lets us compare the Erie population as a whole to just the likely swing voters. So now I look at in. Eerie. For instance, the average adult is fifty three years old if you just take the whole population in the market. Target, audience if you said. swing likely to turn out is forty seven other words. Michael's machine is telling us that the average swing voter is is six years younger than the average, their forty, seven years old, and the other incredible thing about Michael's machine is that it's also able to spit out this whole media plan for how to reach those people. The machine can name the single TV show watched by the most swing voters. Each week that show in the Eerie area is the OT on Fox football shows or wrap up of the day's games. That'd be fair. that is one of the most watched shows in the entire country. But the numbers do show that in terms of efficiency like sports would be a pretty good way to get your ad in front of a decent chunk of swing voters in Erie Pennsylvania Espn you can reach sixty percent on eerie and a week. Again, this target in this market if the secret to understanding what the campaigns are thinking is to learn where the most money is being spent per swing voter. That place
VP debate in review
"Debate, the pandemic took center stage in Salt Lake City. Here's ABC. Is Mary Bruce. Right Out the gate. Kamala Harris, taking the Trump administration to task for its response to the American people have witnessed what is the greatest failure of any presidential administrator. Shin in the history of our country, Separated by Plexi Glass and sitting over 12 ft. Apart. The California senator accusing Vice President Mike Pence in the White House of keeping Americans in the dark, they knew what was happening and they didn't tell you They knew, and they covered it up pence pulling from the president's playbook, claiming a vaccine is right around the corner. We believe we'll have literally tens of millions of doses of vaccine before the end of this year, But experts say it likely won't be widely available until several months into next year. With the president battling the virus and the outbreak at the White House growing pence as to explain how did this happen that Rose Garden of them? Then hurry deal of speculation about it. Many of the people who were at that event citizen actually were tested for Corona virus. And it was an outdoor event which all of our scientists regularly and routinely advised, But there was no social distancing and very few masks, and he failed to mention that the celebration included an intimate indoor reception, instead saying Americans should be free to make their own decisions about how to protect themselves from the virus. The difference here is President Trump and I trust the American people to make choices in the best interest of their health. And with 12.6 million Americans out of work, the two sparring over which ticket has the best plan to bring back the economy and the truth, And the fact is Joe Biden has been very clear. He will not raise taxes on anybody who makes less than 400,000 here, feel the Trump taxpayers. Mr Vice president, speaking I'm speaking over and over again. Both candidates dodging questions, instead reverting back to talking points. Vice President Pence. Do you believe that climate change poses an existential threat? Fences in the climate is changing will follow the science. But the Trump Administration has repeatedly dismissed science on climate change and on healthcare. Harris, ripping into Pence for trying to dismantle Obama care with no replacement. If you have a preexisting condition. Heart disease, diabetes, breast cancer, They're coming for you. If you love someone who has a preexisting condition, Thank you. Pence said he and the president have a plan that would protect people with preexisting conditions, but wouldn't say what that plan is. Instead, he changed the subject, pushing Harris on whether abiding administration would pack the Supreme Court a question she wouldn't answer. Susan are voting right now. They'd like to know if you and Joe Biden are going Pac's the Supreme Court. If you don't get your way in this nomination, let's talk about once a month. Even non answer Joe Biden, despite their policy differences, the debate a stark contrast to the clash between President Trump and Joe Biden, the return of civility and I also want to congratulate you. As I did on that phone call on this sort of nature of your nomination, And there was another big question that the vice president refused to answer. What would he do if the president loses to Joe Biden and refuses to accept the election? Result? Pence, deflecting instead echoing Trump making baseless claims about male in voter fraud and declining to say if he would commit To a peaceful transition of power. ABC is Mary Bruce.
Former FSU coach Bobby Bowden, Arizona’s Sumlin positive for virus
"Saw a notice notice in about an hour ago, the media started talking about it. Legendary football coach Bobby Bowden has now got Cove in 1990 years old. That's tough. I listen, I am a Miami hurricane. The rivalry with Florida State. I can't stand the Florida Gators. Sorry, but one just my personal There are a few football teams. I just can't deal with Steve Spurrier ruined me for the Gators. But I will say that I've always had nothing but respect for Bobby Bowden, not just what he accomplished, but how he accomplished. I thought he was a class act. He always treated me very well when we would go to his coaches camps. And 90 years old Covert. 19 says he feels fine. He'll see how the next day the next couple of days work out for him, You know, to bring it a little closer to home. I just read it was just reported by Tyler Drake in our Web team. That theory Zona Wildcats head football coach Kevin Someone is now positive. Wow. Now old is coach someone I don't know the answer to that in the late forties. I was gonna say 50 50, but I'm still a relatively young guy, especially compared about about this was in the hospital had have assert a little bit of surgery had had the cancer's removed from his skin. He's 90 years old, So he's in a much more risk your category Someone is 56, okay? Yeah. So that stuff, so I wonder what they do is they get ready to play football? Pac 12 gonna play football soon? Yeah, his quote says in adherence with all university protocols, Coach Sumlin entered self isolation. Immediately. Contact tracing began in earnest. And he has not experienced things that this is not how humans talk. By the way. I know what I say, because, well, if it was forced isolation that's called kidnapping. Of course it was. It was self isolation. I am feeling well and will be engaged in our ramp up activities on a virtual basis until I complete the isolation protocol.
Why some dems dislike Reid Hoffman
"Might, be here at recode centers on tech billionaires who they are, what drives them, and what exactly they spend their fortunes on. And these days one answer to that last question is politics. So I, try and chart the gusher of billionaire money flowing. Into American. Elections. Often in secret. Joining me on the show today here is my editor at recode, Sam, open hey sam hey teddy. So last week, we published a story from you about one of these billionaires read men, the founder of Lincoln Board member of Microsoft, a major democratic political donor. So I think this conversation is a chance for us to talk about why out of the many people in Silicon Valley could be covering why did we focus on hosman? He's not really a household name the way that Mark Zuckerberg are Jeff Bezos are let's talk about what makes him an interesting character in Silicon Valley. Yeah I mean he someone who? Has. A ton of. Money. But more. So is one of these people who sees himself as a quote unquote thought? Leader Right. He sort of coins terms that are used in startup land. He has a podcast which has tons of listeners and he's basically sort of cultivated this image as one of the good guys of silicon. Valley. And in the last four years, he's taken his billions of dollars net worth and decided that he wants to become the tip of the spear of Silicon, Valley's to oust trump and he's doing exactly that Nacho spending his own money but sort of serving as a port of call for all Silicon Valley so that's why we thought focused on Reid Hoffman. As a way to talk about the bigger story, which is the politicization and the new partisan ethos that has taken over tech over the last four years. One of the things that we talk about early in the story as we talk about his donor table and I think that gets at this idea that. He's Gathering his fellow billionaires to take action as well. So can you tell us a little bit more about the donor table and how it works and this big money machine? He's created for Democrat politics in. Silicon. Valley sure. So Hoffman is not just putting his own considerable net worth into this. A lot of the secret sauce of political fundraising that happens you know oftentimes in the dark at private meetings is the art of getting other rich people to do the same thing. As you to create leverage. This is someone who started linked in all about creating social networks to drive professional change and stuff like that. So Hoffman has basically created this donor table, which is a fancy way of saying a bunch of his rich friends getting together to fund the same stuff. So Hoffman has some political help and there are people who are other billionaires who maybe don't have fulltime political help who turned Hoffman they say, Hey, read what are you funding? Can I? Get Out essentially and read in turn will frequently challenge other Billionaires Ju to do the same thing. So sort of what this creates is this network of rich people were funding. The same nonprofits are the same super pacs or the same candidates behind the scenes and what the ends up creating is some organization really well funded others don't and no one really knows this donor table exists, but it's sort of is how big money politics works, which is you know without full Disclosure and accountability and transparency. But read is sort of the node of this new political network something I'd like us to talk a little bit more about is you know there are billionaires all over the country on both sides of the political aisle pouring money into the twenty twenty election and you know I think it's important to cover silicon valley in the billionaires here. Can you explain a little bit more why Silicon Valley is of particular note why are we focusing on? Tech Billionaires. People Reid. Hoffman when we cover politics and money in two thousand twenty. So at the core of read bins takeover of the Silicon Valley money machine is this tension that re dispensing millions of dollars to house trump and yet lots of Democrats hate him and the reason is Hoffman doesn't just want to fund the Democratic Party in the traditional ways he wants to fund Democratic Party in a very silicon valley way funding start-ups that might compete with the democratic establishment. Of State Democratic parties which are the backbone of the National Democratic infrastructure. Hoffman has basically declared a war on the Democratic Party establishment and that sort of has obviously made a lot of Democrats. uncomfortable. He's willing to fund things that push the envelope that some people have ethical concerns over. It's not as easy as well. Re Hoffman spending his fortune to hours trump. There's a lot of uneasiness about him and that makes them a fascinating character the fact that how? Democrats. Both accept his money with open arms and celebrate him. As you know a bore against what he sees a fascist threat at the same time, he's being very critical people who've made their entire careers about being a professional democratic political operative and a lot of ways. Obviously, this gets at a broader criticism of Silicon Valley, which is the respect expertise. They think they know everything I think a lot of Democrats feel that way about Silicon Valley in. But SORT MINNESOTA symbolize this bigger debate about whether any of these silicon valley people know what they're talking about when they enter a field that is not business.

"12 and Mountain West Conference is say they'll play football this fall, reversing an August decision to postpone until spring Pac 12 chair Michael Shell. There was a time when that time the initial vote that none of us that some of us weren't able to play. We wouldn't have been able to play under law in Oregon or in many places in California. Chill says the vote to resume play was unanimous. The conference is planning a seven game season that'll start November. 6th men's and women's basketball set to start on October 25th Mountain West season will start October 24th, CSU, Airforce and Wyoming are all part of the mountain West.

"That PAC 12 As voted to play. Chiyo Bon Agora of ESPN gives us fellas a date amount of games and when the Pac 12 title game will take place. The season will begin November 6th. Every team in the Pac 12 will play. All right, Let's have some fun. Take a guess. How many games 6777 was Sam the embryos with eight I'm sorry about the other Isn't the big 10 going with eight in there right away behind, But I think big tennis he sees a big 12 is eight with the nonconference games somewhere around there. A CC is the same. Title game December 18th. So those are the particulars was at six at six plus the crossover games, right? Ah, that's all I have is just what I okay. I think it's details that sales. Obviously I think they're doing with the big 10 is doing well, of course, the Big ten's doing it they're doing a big tent took a
Pac-12 announces it will play college football this fall, walking back previous vote
"12 is resuming college football. Now this brings back the major conferences as well. They're talking about November on this with the backdrop. Remember that Notre Dame A CZ cancelled its game this weekend because of new covert cases, so we'll we'll keep our fingers crossed.
Pac-12 presidents don't vote, wait continues for season restart
"Pac 12 did not vote on a plan for How to start it's football season during a meeting on Friday If the conference decides to play a target date of November, 7th is viewed as the most realistic option with the hope to begin play early enough to allow the Pac 12 to be port of the large of college football season and eligible for the college football playoff. Let's bring an ESPN college football insider Heather Ditch She's been reporting on this story and Heather no Pac 12 vote to play just yet. Where are we regarding the potential of a Pac 12 season being played? Well, the statement out of the Pac 12 was that they're going to meet again on Thursday, September 24th and make a decision then, But again, it comes back to making sure that they have all the public health clearance is all the testing machines are expected to be on campus by the end of the month. I think it's just a question of Do they have the public health clearances? And then how do they determine how many weeks of practice they want to get in? Ideally, they have said repeatedly that they want six. But how much if at all? Are they willing to push the envelope on that to get to the end of October to start or do they creep into November? Which is a very big difference? When you're starting to talk about the college football playoff timeline?
Big Ten Football Will Begin in 2020, Reversing Earlier Decision
"The big ten season starting officially October. Twenty. That mass. Guessing a little bit of a small base Ga- I mean, the big thing is the daily testing. What will it mean for plays you've declared early and you have an agent though because some some players who realized that you know if you're at Ohio state and you're not gonNA play, you might get your agent get ready for the draft, and now in theory if you've ever signed with an agent, you can never play college football again right so hopefully, something can be worked out because this is an exceptional. That, surely, well, currently there isn't, but obviously, we're in uncharted territory. We've never had never to deal with this situation before. So the NC Double A.'s can have to think on its feet. The big ten will felt pressure from parents, players and other leagues but make no mistake they wanted to play football they. Awesome. There's been talk as if the OH, they don't. They don't care they. You know they don't take football seriously anyone think likes if Michigan Penn State doesn't care about playing football. It's worth so much money to all of. Them it's great that coming back. We'll see if the PAC twelve can do. It's I I remember speaking to a couple of months ago and you asked me how confident I was the NFL season stall on time as normal and whether college football would and I was a hundred percent positive the NFL week one would start as normal. Absolutely note faith that college football would be able to see college football is still in a state of flux. It's a much more complicated situation than the NFL you can just keep these thirty teams. Following the same sort of. Glad to see the big ten back. But it's going to be hard for any of those teams to make the national championship because don't get to play as many games as the other conferences.
Big Ten changes course, aims for October start to football
"Almost up to full power, only the Pac 12 remains on the sidelines after the big 10 announces. Is changing course. Instead of pushing football back to spring, it will play this fall beginning the weekend of October. 23rd. The college basketball season will start later than usual. But the start date has been established This November. 25th. The day before Thanksgiving. The
'Open up, PAC-12': Trump says major college football conference has 'time' to restart season
"To college football. Now that the big 10 has announced they will be playing football this fall. President Trump is putting pressure on the Pac 12 to do the same pack. 12 year, the only one now open up Open up PAC 12 Get going. The Pac 12 is looking at possibly starting it's football season this fall after previously deciding last month to postpone all sports until January. The conference is currently in a holding pattern because two of the states within the conference California and Oregon have not approved teams to conduct practices with contact. The Pac 12 CEO group is scheduled to meet Friday to discuss the conferences options.
Los Angeles - Nothing Preventing USC, Pac-12 Teams From Playing This Season, Gov Newsom
"A very weird day when it comes to PAC twelve football future of it got earlier this morning, the big ten announced they're coming back. They're coming back on October twenty third they they're confident that with their testing and the way that college football has kind of gone over the past couple of weeks at other schools that they can safely bring kids back now you and I both gone on record saying, we don't think it's the smartest thing in the world to play college football. So I'm not saying that I want college football to come back I don't. US He really wants to play their players. All wrote a letter to Gavin Newsom but here's why I'm bringing this up the big ten and outs were coming back Larry Scott the commissioner of the pack twelve immediately she's a statement that says because of the governor's guidelines we are not allowed to practice in the state of California which means USC Ucla Stanford and cal all would be unable to practice about an hour later Gavin newsom the governor California was doing a press conference and he was asked is that true that you won't allow those teams to practice? Here's part of what newsome hadn't his answer quote. I WanNa make this crystal clear. Nothing in the state guidelines denied the ability for the PAC twelve to resume quite to the contrary. This has been a misrepresentation of the facts and quote. What is Larry Scott and the PAC twelve referencing when they say. They can't play because of NEWSOM and NEWSOM says, it's not true who's telling the truth here newsome. Governor ain't Lion Larry Scott I. I've never been a fan of I think he could screw up a ham sandwich. But I but I do think that newsome is telling the truth and I think we're at the point John Now with the big ten resuming along with the SEC in the big twelve and the ACC, I think it is time for the PAC twelve to seriously consider resume or starting the season starting it earlier. They've got access to this rapid testing program. They're able to test players in in very short order really quick tests. I don't see any reason why the PAC twelve shouldn't be playing right now the. Monroe. Saint Brown Graham Harrell Bunch of USC. People have tweeted this letter out basically to goose to newsom saying, please let us play and newsom saying, no, you're you're allowed to play. It's it's up to your it's up to your athletic directors. It's up to your chancellor's I. Think it's time to have a vote among twelve PAC twelve schools and get a season started.
Big Ten football to resume weekend of Oct. 24
"We have major breaking news into our newsroom, and this is what we have been waiting for all morning long involved that man and that man and this conference do we have heather standing by guys lipset her break the news because it's her story let's bring heather and Paul into it. Go ahead heather the floor is yours. What is the news this morning? Komo morning sources have confirmed that the big ten is expected to announce this morning that football is back. The date is still in the air. I'm not sure if it's going to be October seventeenth or October twenty fourth but greedy I can't confirm the big ten football is coming back. Big. Ten football coming back in October for those who are just joining us had their catch everyone up on how we got here on August eleven. They announced that they will not play and they were talking about a spring season. Here we are about a month later how did we get from there to here? while. There is certainly political and public pressure but the president's the fourteen presidents and Chancellors said they would not be swayed by that the bigger topic I. Think we will hear a lot about today is going to be the changes in the medical information remember Michigan Michigan State you're talking about an epidemiologist and in infectious disease expert, right? So the medical information had to. Be buttoned up and change in order for this decision to be made I know that over the weekend they were presented with at least four new antigen tests for daily rapid testing results and also helping them with the contact tracing I. Think the question is and also going back to that date October seventeenth or twenty four. How quickly can they actually procure those tests it? Took the PAC twelve a while to get them on each campus so that could be part of the equation. There are still a lot of questions answered but Greenie to me that is is the number one is the differences in the medical information helps sway the president's the number. One question that most fans will have is, can they get a representative season in in time? To compete with the SEC and the big twelve and the ACC and try to get into the College Football playoff I literally just pulled out my calendar. If they start on October seventeenth, it's ten weeks until the College Football playoff selection special, which is set for December twenty. What is the plan as far as you know it about what they will do for a season? Well haven't confirmed the exact plan to be honest but sources have said that they would like an eight game season eight or nine game season with a conference championship game being on December nineteenth as you said to sneak it in. December twentieth selection, day, and I can tell you that if the big ten is going to be allowed back in the College Football playoff all ten s BS commissioners and Notre Dame Athletic Director Jacks Warwick would make that decision. My Gut says, yes of course they would let them in. But at the same time, you have to remember that not everybody's playing right and it's a shorter season for them to continue. So maybe it's a little bit of discussion difficult conversation but I do think at the end those commissioners will let them participate in the College Football playoff. The question is, can Ohio State Win it?
The story of Trevor Lawrence's life-changing summer
"So we just discussed how Trevor Lawrence is influence has been growing this off season I taking on issues of public health and racial inequality. But last month. The very thing that gives Trevor Lawrence his enormous Megaphone College football was put in jeopardy as players in conferences. Having. These discussions about canceling the season. What role in those discussions did Trevor Lawrence play. It was a Sunday night early August enduring. Trevor. Together again. There at travers fiancee's apartment and rumours are starting to pick up steam that some of the biggest most powerful conferences in college football the Big Ten PAC twelve that they're seriously considering, postponing their fall season, and this is coming at the end of a week. When of PAC twelve players have released a statement on the Players Tribune using the Hashtag we are united. And they've threatened to out fall CAM even opt out of games unless the conference mixed their demands for fair treatment and safety regulations and less the conference addresses concerns over racial justice, and meanwhile on a nearly parallel track, you have players the cost, the country, trevor, and fluted tweeting the Hashtag. We want to wait to express their desire to keep the seasonal live. So, in the Sunday night when it feels like college ball is teetering, it's actually dairying who decides to reach out to Dylan bowls. One of the players the Pactel's we are United Movement because endearing mine Houston gain. If we all join together the players in the we are united movement and the players in the we want to play movement that would be undeniably powerful for players who don't have concrete power who don't have a real seat at the table at least not yet their collective voice with the really hard to ignore because truly. So many of these fires want the same thing they want to play football this fall, they just want to do it in a safe responsible way. Dylan Daring, trevor they get on a three way facetime called a hash all this out to make sure they're all on the same page and that very quickly evolves into a zoom call with a dozen or so some of the biggest names in college football right Justin fields chew behind nausea. Harris And matter of thirty minutes, they agree to roll out a list of demands from this new fused Mecca Movement. It was amazing. How quickly we all got on the same page put something together I feel like the majority was getting spoken for. And we were like, Hey, we WANNA play. We want it to be safe but we do to take a watt mandated and universal safety procedures for Covid nineteen and they want to form players association. And it pretty much the stroke of midnight. These players, Tweeden Unison. But it's trevor naturally whose tweet is hurt the loudest he's re tweeted some fifteen thousand times including one quote tweet from President Donald Trump, and it's just a few days later actually that someone from the White House reaches out to Amanda Lawrence Trevor Lines mom letting her know that the president would like to get in touch with trevor. So hold on. So he has the president of the United States listening to him. Now let alone all of his peers across college football. What was that conversation with Donald Trump? Like? You know I would have loved to be a fly on whatever wall in whichever room that phone call took place the president has said really that trevor just reiterated his desire to play this season but trevor for his part hasn't divulged too much about that phone call. Conversation it was good I mean we just talked about kind of the whole we talked about that. We WanNA play like how's it going? How's it looking for the season and? president trump was just saying, yeah, I think our country needs college football and. then. Some small talk. Yes. We a little bit about what was going on in my life and vice versa. So that was pretty much the conversation though trevor is twenty years old the president of the United States wanted to speak to him. That is remarkable crazy. No matter which way you cut it. So. Let's recap here Halley Grossman because since March Trevor, Lawrence Age Twenty has faced pressure to help mitigate a global pandemic fight racism save the College football season display a level of political savvy and or gamesmanship that is obviously well beyond his years. So what else can you possibly be asked to do at this point? I mean look putting your stamp of approval which he's done on a list of demands that includes creating players. Association is a big deal. That's a radical way to reimagined that amateurism model that governs. College football right now but I think what this summer has shown is that trevor doesn't plan to quiet down you just a few days ago a whole lot of guys that original zoom call we talked about reconvened because they revealing again from a police shooting of a black man again, and so in the days after Jacob, Blake was shot. Trevor and Darien and Dylan, and a whole host of others talked once again to hammer out ways to help to draw attention to the issue and hopefully bring change. Trevor Lawrence football season is starting tomorrow and if all goes according to plan. He's GonNa win the heisman before becoming the first overall pick in next year's NFL draft teams have been salivating over his talent. There have been rumors that teams might even want to tank for Trevor Lawrence this season. So the question really that is, why is he even putting himself out there like this? Why even play the season? I mean that is the question, right? We have seen plenty a high profile opt-outs this season jomar chase at Lsu. Mike Parsons at Penn State today. Oregon. These are first round top ten NFL draft guys but no one literally nobody has less to lose by not playing the twenty twenty football season than Trevor Lawrence. are in a player having a job borough like. Or I don't know an asteroid hitting the earth, his Cossacks to go number one overall are safe, and at the same time, no one has less to gain by paddling the status quo or shaking up the current system than trevor does this system works just fine for him? He is a young white man. He's a young white quarterback, and so I asked Amanda, his mother that seems washing. Why? Why do all this? I put himself out there and she said something interesting she said look. there. are players out there who do need to even if trevor doesn't and there are people out there for whom the status quo and the current system don't work even if it works for him and he understands that now probably better than he ever has and he just wants to help. That's really it know told me one of his goals for the senior only meeting because he wanted everyone to understand that unless everyone is good no one is good and trevor, his best friend took that to heart. Of the day, there's so much division in our country. Just word of some people that WanNa see people together, WanNa see people love each other and I think that's where a lot of the things I do. It stems from that just wanted to see people happy together not divided. With all this pressure now from all of these different places in our country. Landing Atop. Trevor Lawrence's shoulders. What are you personally expect from him when the season starts? Because of the ways in which Trevor Lawrence has stepped onto center stage this summer it's almost easy to forget what it is. That gives him that stage in the first place, he is extremely good at his job. Term Lawrence is an excellent quarterback. Making predictions in two, thousand, twenty, hundred, probably a fools errand. But tomorrow, there's football comes we'll pay wake forest, and if clemson continues to play if they and the ACC and the big twelve and sec are able to play a full season, don't be surprised to see Trevor Lawrence back on the national championship stage. Don't be surprised to see Trevor Lifting the national championship trophy and along the way don't be surprised to see trevor continuing to speak out and perhaps that's one of the safest predictions you can make in twenty twenty. Life to be reflection of what I say and what I believe I've been thinking about everything that's going on and I think there has been some some moments where I had to say some things because it's just the right thing to do and it's time really is just how I live my life I want it to reflect what I say. I. Would always be the same person I want to be consisted. Eliot Grossman. Thank you for jumping on stage with. US. Thank you so much for having me. Pablo.

Eventually, as Massachusetts began to suppress the virus and emerge from a near lockdown, the candidates began to take their campaigns on the road with appropriate social distancing rules and face masks in tow. The showdown drew criticism from some Democrats nationally who feared it would siphon time and money away from the primary goals of defeating President, Donald Trump and winning back control of the Senate. It also wasn't cheap with both Kennedy and Markey raising millions to pay for campaign staff television, and digital ads and old school campaign flyers. It looks like they'll get the automatic bid to the what and Colorado with A sixteen thirteen record looking at an at large bid. They've Bo submitted bids to host first round games. And they're GONNA be practicing. Which means you're optimistic if you're out there running around and doing your thing so that that says a lot from our track and and JR Payne big step forward for both those programs. I think it's because it's important to remember obviously what the nit did for Arizona last year and UCLA. A couple years ago. I mean you get some postseason experience like that. Even though it's not the postseason tournament you ultimately want to be playing and it can do a lot for a program in terms of building a foundation and kind of getting that experience those players in an a taste of Winning some big postseason games so looking forward to see in that reminder that selection Monday is March Sixteenth. What do you got for a the best segment of the day? And now from Murphy's law you know it's been such a a sensational year in the PAC twelve conference this year but I think it's always important it's important to appreciate the past and tonight on HBO They're previewing a new. A new show women of Troy. It's an hour documentary on Cheryl Miller and Cynthia Cooper and what they accomplished in the eighties at USC when they won two national titles and Kim Mulkey makes him statements. Geno AURIEMMA will be featured as well a lot of hall of famers in Wnba players and just the greatness of what you're going to see is the greatness of Cheryl Miller. She had a knee injury at twenty two so no one saw her play in the WNBA. But there's some people that say before Cheryl and after Cheryl AC and We've had some great players since Cheryl when you think about Diana to Rossi Lisa Leslie and now we have Sabrina. And so when you're talking about the greatest that I've ever played the Game Cheryl Right now. I think is holding the gold. Standard and Sabrina is in that conversation. So you've got the past tonight on. Hbo Check that out. If you've got HBO or you've got a friend that has H. B. O. Or You have a way of finding it and then we have the president that is is this PAC twelve season and this PAC twelve tournament and rolling forward to the NCAA tournament. And then there's the future and I saw the future sitting in the stands behind a Krista blunk in me and that was was Jalen Chirad from Colorado who stayed for a couple of days after Colorado lost in the tournament and sat in the stands to watch to learn to absorb and to say. This is where I WANNA be. I WANNA take my team forward. And all the great freshman a-list appeal Fran And everybody else. That is going to take this conference beyond where Sabrina. This crew has taken it. And I can't wait for the future because the past has been glorious and we're in the middle of an incredible present but The past the present and future. It's Pretty Osman's conference. I think that was a big theme. That sort of develops You know it was. Obviously we talked about it all year long but it was so palpable at the last four days in Vegas. Watching these freshmen. I mean Colin Crocker at cow. The game that she had for them to upset. Asu In that second half she goes off. Twenty Elissa. Eli Is just unbelievable. Charisma OSBORNE AT UCLA. You can go on and on down the list and it's the one good thing for for us. Sit in the chairs that we're in Mary's obviously. It's this organ. Squad is one of the best teams ever assembled in the PAC twelve basketball. But you know we got a lot of big time talent You know and the future is certainly bright for this conference. So I'm I'm excited to see how it all plays out certainly excited for what's to come in the future before we sign off. I got to give a big shoutout because we had I think One of the best tournament coverages from a factual network perspective. The last four days in Las Vegas and there were so many people who made that happen. Obviously all the people on the Air Mary you and Krista and Tammy calling the games and then a lease and Roz with me on set and Kate Scott working like crazy and jill savage on the sidelines but there are so many incredible people behind the scenes that that I just WanNa give a shout out to colleen. Obviously you're the leader of the band But we had our IAN Christine and Ross and everybody behind the scenes that put in. I can't even tell you how many hours to Bring you the you know the unbelievable coverage that we were able to bring you over the four days at Mandalay Bay It doesn't just happen by accident. It takes a ton of planning and work in coordination and I just WanNa give a shout out to everybody at the actual number who works their tails off to to make the conference tournament Special And there's no rest for the weary because we're doing it again. Starting tomorrow at noon The men's basketball tournament tips. Off FROM T. Mobile. Be sure to check out. By the way the men's podcasts. I can't wait to talk to the coaches and see who had the bracket all plays out and see how far Oregon goes and whether the bracket gets released earlier. Not which I really hope it does. That was terrible. Terrible terrible but it would be fun. Shit was it was terrible for the players. It was helpful to us as bad for priorities. Yes Yeah we're we're not the important ones there. It's a it's a moment for the teams in the players. So yeah hopefully. I'm sure that there have been some meetings and conversations that he is beyond this week about how to make sure. That thing doesn't accidentally end up on television early Well we appreciate you guys listening. "Number group of head coaches and this to have the support The text messages on the encouraging handshakes After a loss that I got from from almost every coach in this conference was really encouraging for me. And and help me. No like you're doing the right thing you know. Stay the course and so many people would say. Gosh we watch your team on film and they play so hard and you know keep it up and I love the fight in your team and you know I would ask our systems like you're saying that like they have to say that and they're like no no they only needed you know and It just a good feeling to have people encouraging Sherman your team this year in the regular season. Pac twelve three victories. All of them on the road all of them on Sunday. So that means you're coming off losses. I understand what you're team's all about. Just tell folks what your team's all about to be able to do that in the toughest conference in the United States. Why you know we we. We took the Lexin and we just kept getting back up and and and the goal was to stick together. We knew that we were going to be outmatched. In in some Some Games and we knew that we were young and inexperienced But we knew that we had a Lotta heart and we've talked a lot about how your character is defined during those times there was things aren't going your way times of adversity and wanted to show people who we are. You know what we're made of and it's easy to fight and have fun when you're winning Games But we prove that that we care about one another and that we're committed to this program and that we can fight and have fun and Badal even though the outcome isn't always what we want. And you know those Saturday practices you know after a loss. It's like okay. We run it back and the full thing about our conferences that you're running back against another opponent and so it's another opportunity to try to do something special and and we were able to do that. You know from Sunday's short prep and I'm proud of our team. Excuse me as well you should be. I think you know you talked about the belief that your team hasn't you? Is it special and you can see it and you can see it in the way that they talk about you in the way they respond to you and I remember on earth. Forget when you came over to the set for your postgame interview guys. Asu On day one they all. It was just like a mob scene. They came over. And and we're just hugging you and it was. It was a really cool moment and I just got to ask. I think that them believing in you is such a big piece of being able to be successful in being able to stick together even though you knew it was going to be hard this year. So how did you kind of instill that belief in them? What what's the key to that player coach relationship? Well you know. I talked a lot about me. Not asking them to do anything that I'm not willing to myself you know and It'd be a mentioned it. You know. I did play You know in the past flip in the PAC ten at the time for Stanford and you know I've been on a team that's been really successful and won conference championships and into the final four and I played in the WNBA. And so what? I'm demanding of these. Players is is only things that I I was willing to get into my coach and I think they see how hard our staff works every single day and the commitment that we have to them and I really try to be there for them in every way that I can so that when I say hey we need one free stop. Let's go They know that they that I have their back in. They're willing to give me that same type of commitment and do whatever it is asked me to do on the poor. You Know Sherman this year An exceptional group of freshmen entered the conference. And that's what a conference needs to continue to be great but your freshman mean there were times. I was calling games. There were three and four. Freshmen on the floor. And it was kind of mind boggling. What you guys accomplished. Tell us about your freshman on your team but the freshman this conference in what it means to the future then this phenomenon and The energy that they brought Competitiveness And just their ability to be a good teammate. And you know. Listen to their seniors to listening to their coach It it really was special and I think he's all a lot of freshmen power around the conference. You know You know that that all freshmen team for the tax is is really sounded and this conference is GonNa continue to be one of the best conferences in women's basketball and I think you know cal basketball is going to. You know prime up the ladder in the conference because of the Group of freshmen. And I've got this. We're supposed plans my instagram today. Which is dealing Brown at the free. Throw line During the technical that we had against Arizona and standing behind her at half court are the four freshmen. And it's you know it's it's it's open on the young jet I night. That's that's my day But it's such a cool photo and this represents so much of what? This journey was this young group following. You know the veteran leadership that we have well and I know that that you're excited embarrassed. Fans are excited about the group. You also have come into next year. Ranked summit bus RECRUITING CLASS IN THE NATION. I'm curious a ha ha. You Know How do you sell your program? When you're on the recruiting trail too and get those players to be excited to come to Berkeley and play and also now that you're I know back on the trail again. Getting those two wins over. Asu in Arizona to kind of close out the season does. Does that help? Sell your vision at all. I think it's great for recruiting. You know those to win At the time of year you know to get the victories and marched. You know the text messages that I received from recruits During that span was was really encouraging. And you know I'm going home. Visits Right now and the message is like I I believe in myself. I believe in this program and what we're building we've talked about the number five recruiting class coming in joining you know the four freshmen. That we have right now. What a great foundation that is and that coming in like you don't have to do all the work we've got pieces in place To keep this thing rolling and we're just asking for this twenty. Twenty one plastics to elevate things even more you know But let's really like when it comes down to it. What I learned in this first year when I first got the job there was so much talk about. Can You keep this player? Is this player. GonNa come back. Uh-huh you Miss Clare this players fans grain and it and it was so stressful. And I'm like Oh what are we GONNA do? If someone's so we were so slow from year and finally I had to settle myself down and just be like look. You have players that wants to be here and are willing to do what you want to do. And that's what you mean. And if people aren't willing to be here. I'M NOT GONNA beg. I'm not GonNa you know. Try to be something I'm not and I definitely with home visits and I'm very genuine very authentic and very transparent. And that's the only way I know how to be and I think we will attract the right type of Soon athletes no through that process. And and I'm really excited about what he's your home. He show arms when you look at the success that Adidas had Arizona Over the past couple of years I mean both unity. A- never had been head coaches. And when you make that move that one seat over you know some people think you can do it. Some people don't and you both have shown. Wow you know these two got it going. What do you look at a D. and learn from and get inspired by? I mean she ends such a great job and you know I told my team out how when we played her as a Zafran he's been Arizona and she was such a great player. She spent the floor and lay ups again for us. And our partners targeting them out of the game they couldn't guard or be you know he's such a competitor and you know what she said about me and how that translates over into the coaching. It's the same for her like she's she's just a winner. She's been tentative. She's being the right things and I have said like well. You know we had this number of wins known her first couple years. Why can't that be us? You know You know we gotta find our area. Mcdonald's you know who is that player that this transcends things and I you know what she's been able to do with the fans and yet so many people in that arena. It's just incredible and I do think that's that's something that I learned from and I'm inspired by and I hope that that can be the same type of growth that we have at cal. Sherm BEEN INVOLVED WITH THE PAC. Twelve conference a longtime. How tough is it preparing for these Games week in week out? You know it's fun it's fun like I'm a competitor and every single game it's like Oh gosh okay. Your planning is Amazon. Well we can't relax. Now you have Arizona State and wow look Colorado was able to do like you know. Almost two wins over. Stanford who Ho seems like bad? I mean I think the coolest thing about our conference is that it's tough from top to bottom so yes. Oregon is dominant and you know. I think they're great National Championship contender. But you know we're no chump and we handle ourselves non-conference against teams Arkansas Kentucky. Like where were those seems if they were playing in the PAC twelve you know and so I really appreciate the fact that every single night. You really don't know what's going to happen and it's so competitive and that's what makes you better playing against good competition. Every single day is how you grow and how you reach your full potential and and that's why I think you know it's a no brainer to play in the flow. I love that chairman and you mentioned Oregon and I think obviously that one of the big story lines now as we look forward to seeing tournament is Artis Ducks GonNa run the table and win a national championship. And I guess I just you know you played them new. You've seen them up close Do you think they have what it takes to win the whole thing and also it's been awhile? Since the patch was won a national championship ninety two Stanford was the last team to do. What do you think it's important for the conference that the PAC twelve wins and I think it'd be huge for the conference. You know And I think Oregon definitely has the capability you know And when you get to that point as as we've seen with you on losses at the Buzzer and such like you get to the final four. You get there. It's it's you know while you're way. Are you know Is it your day so to speak? I think they're they're maybe you know two or three teams that have that ability where you can say Yep. I put my money on them to win the National Championship and Oregon's definitely one of them You know you gotta stay healthy and You know you gotta make the right please. And and and and show up every night per precipitating straight. Now it's winner go home so we'll see what happens. I'm for for all of the facts while teams you know..

"Game by Thirty. Three points in Here was his answer. Play for you. I don't know about any of that. All I know is in that. Top sixteen rebuild. This is our tenth win against teams in the top. Sixteen five of those on the road to of neutral. That's a pretty damn good resume and I don't care we'll play anywhere so there you have it. I think you know making a case for his team and again we mentioned they're up to number two in the people this week But they're twelve and one against AP top twenty five teams seven one against top ten teams this season Mary. What's what's your gut on where they end up on selection Monday. I think I think they'll be the number two number one. I think they're deserving of the number one number one. You're definitely right. Ten wins over top sixteen teams more than the other. Three top teams top number one seeds projected combined and five of those ten victories on the road and to neutral. So only three of those were in front of the crazy crowds in Eugene right at the MK. A and and it's just quite a statement and the way they've done it but the key thing for me for Oregon if fans are interested in seeing them. Play in Portland. Oregon anticipate they win that first and second round game I would be online getting tickets at the motor center for that regional like today because that place is going to sell it when people finally like. Oh yeah that's coming up. Honey get your ticket. You know what I mean like if you WanNa go look at your calendar and and get on it because it you're gonna WanNa be there and you don't WanNa be standing outside saying. Oh how much do you want for those tickets? You want to be in that building. It's GonNa be one of the hottest tickets in town. No doubt about it. Yeah I mean I'm juiced. There's not much more you can say on this organ squad and now they have an opportunity to go finish the unfinished business that Sabrina came back. Patrick swayze his girlfriend baby. Don't put baby. Don't you do not put baby in the corner carrying a watermelon right. Don't put any team in the corner. And that's what I felt like. Sometimes People WanNa put you know teams like Utah and cow and Colorado put him in the corner. Washington stay U. DUB don't don't put baby in the Cornell put those teams in the corner. That came out. They competed. They won and these are teams. That are you know it's important to finish strong? Why because you want to tell recruits? Look we've won three of five one two or three. We've got it going. Look how we we stayed with it. We've got great culture. This finish is important to these teams and where they're trying to go as it is for the top four six ten. Whatever you WANNA give it so don't put anybody in the corner and my second one is. It's an Chinese proverb. One picture is worth ten thousand words. We are in the business of video. "Brain. And then we can talk about that that game a little bit more but she wrote this incredible letter on the Players Tribune. That came out yesterday. And again if you haven't re read it Seconds that you're done listening to this podcast go read it. The thing that struck me about it is that I think very few people Athletes are otherwise. I'm not just talking about athletes. But very few are able to articulate the big picture in the moment. It's easy to be reflective on the back end. But she is doing that right now. Sabrina is seen everything. She's understanding she's acknowledging and she's articulating this moment. She's in and it's unbelievable. I mean she's it it really is. It's just I was reading it and I'm listening to her yesterday and I'm watching her and I'm just thinking she's it's like almost transcendent. I don't WanNa be cheesy but it it's amazing to me. Yeah it is and then when you think that she arrived at the arena a an hour before the game didn't feel like she could eat And we know how ritualized she is So she had never missed a shoot around before I know it sounds like making a big deal about Sabrina. She's worth making a big deal about. I mean it's what she's doing is is It's beyond almost what's humanly possible to do that. And then step step on the floor when everything that Stanford trying to do is stop her. Don't let her get that triple double. Don't let her get double nothing. Just get out there and make her work for everything but She put a show on last night. And I'm sure she's as tired as she can be emotionally and mentally I mean for any of us as just people. You know how you feel when someone close to you passes away and you go to the service the next day. You're just you're just so you're just physically and mentally exhausted and so An important week for her just to recover because another emotions coming in. That's senior weekend at home in front of sellout crowds and more people who want autographs and want to touch her and WanNa talk to her. And it's just amazing. Kelly talks a lot about this that everywhere they go. You know there's people that want autographs and jerseys and little girls that want pictures and She's A. She's a celebrity as a senior in. Well she's now a graduate student in college and it's It's a lot of responsibility a lot of weight that she's carrying. I thought her teammates did a just a beautiful job of of rising up and and doing everything they could last night. It was an important game. They were playing for a share of of what they feel their championship. That's the PAC twelve regular season. They have now won or shared it for three straight years. And that's part of the legacy that's part of checking the boxes of the unfinished business as they marched down this road of where they want to go and Last night was just it? It what they didn't think this was going to be part of the road but it was a giant bump in the road at giant catastrophe on the road and they've navigated it beautifully. I would say and I think You know when you mentioned her teammates lifting her up. I think there was a really cool picture that Rebecca Lobo or out of a mean tweeted out yesterday and they were the ones that had called the game on. Espn of her whole team and Kelly graves huddled around a laptop watching her deliver this speech and it's just you know it was kind of an amazing behind the scenes moment of Sabrina out there by yourself for team Bakken Stanford Getting Ready for a big game but then still showing that support and then the way that they lifted her up on the court you mentioned sought performance. I mean she she was phenomenal. What else stood out to you about that game last night Mary? Well I have to tip my cap to Stanford as well I mean. They struggled so much in that first half. They couldn't find a bucket but only down ten at halftime. I thought they had a fantastic fourth quarter. They outscored Oregon. Twenty eight to eighteen and they kept kind of knocking on the door. They kept getting there and thought Rebecca made a great point and that is Stanford is on a road of improvement. You know my Dotson is is basically like in her second. That was her second weekend of playing. You know so. What is that October for her? Is that September for her so as she continues to get reps and continues to play. Better teammates get accustomed to where she is on the floor You Know Stanford's only GonNa get better but as you watch Stanford last night you couldn't help but think boy how much they Miss Haley Jones. You know how much you miss. Dj Carrington what a difference they would make but carry on move forward and and we got to win with what we've got and I think we will see a a an improved Stanford team this weekend. They're going to have to be on the road in the desert type. Two Tough Games two teams that got stung this past weekend. GonNa WanNa play really well at home. Yeah well that's not good about supreme. Took effect that Sabrina but we always talk about her career versus Stanford. And it's a little bit skewed to her freshman. Sophomore Kurds four and five but in her last five games she's four and one averaging twenty nine point six points nine point six rebounds and seven point two assists. I don't think they WANNA see Oregon again. I think they're GONNA be. Yeah I think I think every coach is going to be very happy with Sabrina in the WNBA next year. Choline. I'll tell you this. I bet they do want to see her again. And that would be in the championship game in Vegas. I think they very much loved his. Have that match up one more time one last chance and so speaking of Vegas. You know the top four seeds now. We know who they are. We don't know exactly what order it's going to be in Oregon Stanford. Ucla in Arizona are going to get the first round. Byes in Las Vegas and I wanNA talk about Arizona a little bit because despite losing Colorado They're GONNA get a first-round buying the term for the first time in nine years by virtue of of Asu also losing and and that's a big deal. Obviously they MISTERI. Mcdonald's she's the Sheen Score. You talked solace their sad though any update on her day-to-day a lower leg injury and didn't play this weekend. So you certainly that she would be back but again if you know you've got that spot secured essentially what they're playing for. Is that first and second round in the NCAA tournament so but more than anything. The health of airy McDonald is everything. You must have her when you are heading to the NCAA tournament where you're at home on the road wherever you are you need her healthy everyone else. Hey let's go. Let's play as well as we can. But they're going to have to manage that situation to the best of their ability and it's worth reminding everyone. The Selection Committee does take injuries into account. So that does matter. Obviously you know without McDonald they. It would have scored more than thirty eight points. If area had played in that game But the only other losses that they've had this season besides that one word of top ten teams. I think that's something they they they don't lose two teams typically that they're not supposed to lose to And so I think yeah hosting the first two rounds at the tournament still very realistic possibility for D Barnes and man that place of Iraq and if that ends up coming to fruition Colorado you mentioned it but after so many close heartbreaking losses I loved. Jr Payne said. She said it was like watching her team in that fourth quarter grow up before her is because they were doing the things that she had talked about that they had watched film about that she had asked them to do and and it it must have been special no matter who was on that court the fact that they were able to close that out and finally get that win and part of her quotes were also to do it on senior night for senior that this team truly loves is in society are is really really neat it's so jr and we're talking about Quinessa Calico who is just an inspirational leader of this incredibly young team and you know just goes out and to lead and she's doesn't score the most on the team doesn't you know she just gets out plays defense and and try to do the best she can each and every game and there was a picture of My hauling shed after that ballgame just screaming into the air and you just could feel the relief flowing offer that we finally did it and it was it was a great moment for Colorado. There is no doubt about that it was it was an awesome moment for them and I before we welcome goes on. 'cause she's joining us in a couple of minutes but let's just real quick your your thoughts on the huskies after all of those close losses. What was it four overtime losses? This season for them to come out. Get THE LA SWEEP AND UPSET UCLA on senior day. What stood out to you? Well you know I talked to an shots and at least Woodward who did both games this weekend and they just said there's no place they would have rather been. That's where they wanted to be any place in the PAC twelve this weekend. The emotion Just when you when you do it when you finally win it when you finally you know climb the mountain and said it was inspirational and amber mogo senior Senior Day senior weekend It it was just for them. It was everything. Well let's talk to our showy we. We think let's do it. Let's do it all right. Let's bring on the player of the week senior guard. Who dropped twenty two in that monster upset over? Ucla as we mentioned on senior day. Amber Mel congrats on an awesome weekend. And thanks so much for being with us today. We appreciate it. Yes of course. Thank you for having me all right so we got a lot to dive into with you. You You sweep the LA schools this weekend. You get your first career weekly packed with player of the week on her and you upset a top ten team on senior day in front of all your family and friends. Just walk me through what it would. Sunday's win mean to you. Funding was really big for especially if seniors in the program as well I think after beating USD on Friday and then preparing ourselves on Saturday we came in there on Saturday and practice. You know we. We're hungry to get this win and I think on top of it being a special day as well for us I thought that it was it was almost like a perfect ending at the last year airlines arena for myself and the seniors and it was just it was a Lotta Fun and I thought my team played well. And we played with a lot of heart and passion. You guys always play with heart and passion and this season at times has been so challenging for overtime losses and I know every time. I've seen you guys you walk in the gym. You work hard. You're ready to go and you're hungry and you're do you. How have you guys kept that? Just that great attitude all season long with all the heartbreak. Yeah definitely I mean after overtime losses and being up and kind of I guess the word is a little fustration and disappointed sometimes because we're so close and.

"Sabrina factor You know she's a generational player Know I think we're obviously going to have to have our best game but you know you don't go back to like the movie in the miracle you don't have to be you don't have to be the best For ten in a row you got to be best that night and you know. I think that we're going to have to create some confusion. We're going to have to you. Know when they were going to switch our ends a lot depending on their lineups But know the most important thing and I watched our film versus them at home last year. We've had this epic run of light overtimes or last second. You know Shots or games with them but the one that our place last year where they beat US pretty handily it really came down to rebounding and that's been a weakness of ours this year defensive rebounding and so Probably the biggest thing is. I think we're GONNA scheme well enough to force some. I heart shots but keeping Ruthie and sought to off the boards and all of their players. That do such a good job hustling and I think that's really going to be pivotal for us. I'm pretty confident in our defensive game plan that will get enough per shot stops but can we. Can we secure the rebound and then get out run? So they were able to attack before they set their size or the you know and their defense which. I think that's why they're most improved. This year is defensively They've been really good offensively for several years but They're much improved on the defensive end of the floor and so if we can get defensive bores and attack in transition with our small ball and are versatile guards and those kinds of things that that will be a huge key or success. You know. It's interesting corey. This season in the in the PAC twelve is is so reminiscent you know I do the. La Sparks Games and What starts happening at the end of the season with tiebreakers. And who's GonNa make the playoffs right? I feel like we. Are you know all? We're talking about tiebreakers you've got the Tiebreaker Stamford. You've got the tiebreaker with Arizona state looking for the tiebreaker. You know one win against Oregon Oregon. So you got the tiebreaker against them because you only play them once it it's a crazy year Because we're talking about tiebreakers already well. And you look at your. You can have a top ten level team. That's got six losses or you know what I mean like. It's GONNA be crazy. I mean when you think about that you can have a literally a top twelve top team in the country Having to play on that first day of the whole tournament I mean. That's just mind boggling. When you really think about it. In a non kimmy game coach and a non. GimMe game because of what's been going on in this conference. I mean it it's it's crazy. It is crazy I mean you know about I mean I think this weekend is just fun right. I mean you know my players are gonNA ready either going to be prepared The harder ones come after me. Come after that you know the fact of going to the Washington's you know then having to turn out at home or on paper games that great win but they're very capable. I mean it's just it it really you know we keep saying it but it's really true it's just every night and You know there. Eighteen to twenty two years old. And you know they don't quite understand every night yet all the time so That's my job is to help them understand that but I lose a lot of sleep in the process. Corey one of the things. That always just amazes me when I walk in the gym to watch. Ucla practiser shoot around like say for Stanford I walk in. And I'm like nervous for you. I Call as such I. I'm like going into my my coaching mindset. And then I watch your staff and your you and your players and you guys are like I remember last year at Asu and it was the same thing you guys like. Walk in and you're just like let's go and everyone's beaten to the music and having like getting ready getting focused on like wow. This is why I'm not coaching anymore. I can't be like I'm white tents for you guys you guys are just like let's get to work well. It's so interesting to me. I have such a great staff but actually just last night Shannon called me and said you know I just think we need to just keep You know we always talk about bringing in the struggle and the joy we gotta find little ways without compromising our competitive spirit to infuse the joy Because it's just such a grinding right now everywhere harder and I actually. I read it really influential book. I can't remember the name of it but the last year and it talks about learning environments. They're talking about education. And is that if you want to create the most growth that you have every day you wanNA infused struggle enjoy. That's how young people you know. Grow and learn. The best is when you have both of those elements in your teaching progressions and so to create really really hard things where they have to scrap and claw experienced failure and struggle and where they get to experience joy or you know relationships in connection and You know that's not a that's not a scientific formula. It's an art form but I do really believe in that and I have such amazing people around me which both of you know that They remind me all the time. And they I'm the worst honestly I'm just so competitive and I just want to get after it and like you know but they find really appropriate ways To infuse the joy which is really good. Oh you gotta give yourself some Credit Corey because I think one of the ways that you infuse joy that I have seen is is your dance moves. That have really come on. We got within the last couple years. Mary sent me a video of you. Dancing with your team that was staff as a staff. It was union staff there was sent out to recruits like T. Tell us the the back story of that. And why? What's what's what's with the dancing because I love it. I'm a big fan you this recruits I mean recruiting gives. You do anything charisma. Osborne is the one started it so I was talking around the phone recruiting her and she dances. If you follow her on social media she's constantly dancing and says you know if you were to dance live on my official visit. I might commit good enough. I like challenge accepted and that is where the Kiki talent last year came from an awful and the last thing I wanted this for my dance moves. Good Morning America terrible but it happen and so then she comes into the office You know earlier this about maybe about a month ago and says coach. You know you've seen the talks like let's knock. I don't know like well. She's sent me a video she's like I'm coming tomorrow. And we're going to teach Lord and so then they my office. It was hilarious. There was it was Karen Brown and charisma. Osborne and Rachel video team and they. It was hilarious and now I was an awful and they're like I didn't know this. Take this long and I should So so anyway. Then they got caught the whole staff. They're like we're gonNA teach the whole staff and so that's what you what's what Mary since. You was the Charisma Osborne Influence on our whole staff. I was dying laughing. I I hope Miss Vowel has has seen that somewhere. I don't know I know she. She's old retirement now but I know I'll send it to her. Yeah definitely I don't know I might. I'm not up to her standards so I might watch all right one more thing and then we'll let you go practice your tick Tock. Yeah go practice. Your moves exactly exactly. So you've already secured your fifth straight twenty win season and as anybody who's listening to this podcast Knows you're one of the most cerebal coaches certainly that we have in the country so I wanted to give me a self scout nine years into your tenure Westwood. How would you evaluate your success? Wow did question I think that I think that you know. I'm just a continual work in progress. I think that's what you know. This is my twenty Sixth Season of coaching and And I just I think that thing that keeps me going is just I really loved. Get better I love to become a different teacher. Love to connect Just to the to the different generations of kids and You know so i. I think that I think we're on the right trajectory You know but for me. It's all about we. We have a saying in our In our program that champions made here is Ucla's program as Lord that phrase but we say champions made year from the inside out and it really is for me. I saw evaluate that I wanted to be You know I wanNA be a a competing for national championships. I WANNA be competing for Conference Championships Urine. And you're out You know I think we're we're not quite there yet. And being the nation's elite constantly on a consistent basis and and we're still waiting to get to our first final four and those kinds of things But I think the thing I'm most proud of is I think we really care and foster the journey of young people's hearts and and I think that's The most important thing to me that doesn't diminish How much I want to grow in how badly I want to win the championship but It's just never going to be more important than coaching. Young People's hearts and so You know I think I probably have told you this story before but it sort of encapsulates everything 'cause my fourth on the job here at UCLA. And I've met a lot of coach wooden alumni but John Valley comes into my office and they said hey you need to meet with him. He's the Gerbil for the cure guy and like okay. Whatever I haven't hired a staff. I'm overwhelmed like whatever. So he sits across from me and he just launches in. He said I've been married thirty eight years because it will coach wooden taught me. I've started three successful businesses. Because of what coach wouldn't taught me. I've conquered cancer three times because of the strength coach wooden gave me and then he really got me said. I've survived the death of my twelve year old daughter because of the way coach with lovely any pretty much walked out and then I went and looked him up and he and he was a starting point. Guard on two of Cushman's wins National Championship teams and he played seven years in the NBA. And he didn't even mention it. Because IT PALED. In comparison to the man came and that sorta became our mission. How many John Valleys can Can we create and You know and and Yeah Oh by the way we won You know we went to the first Final four and UCLA history for Special Championship. Oh by the way you know. We want a PAC twelve championship and it was the number one conference in the country But it's net but I always wanted to pale in comparison to the young women and what they become and do the impact. So that's what we're trying to do. I think we're I think we're really committed to our mission. We make mistakes. Yeah but we're really passionate about it and we love what we and so we're GonNa just keep going in that direction. That is an awesome story. And I don't know much but I know that wouldn't smiling down on everything that you're doing down there in Westwood. I know that you and I can't wait for Friday night Pauley pavilion. It's the place to be so you trying to break the student attendance records so I'm urging everyone who's listening to go if you can but if you can't make it you can watch on the PAC twelve network.

"You take those two out of the equation for USC and this is why everyone had their violins out on media to poor mark track. It's it's a sad situation. It is not a sad situation. This is a team that competes Kale over back. Played fifty four minutes in the triple overtime a team that you know. They show up with their lunch buckets. They put on their heart hats and they go out there and they just work their butts off and so impressed by what they did and they were within four points to Arizona. You know a couple of days later He's doing a great job. They have terrific recruiting class coming in. So don't take your eye off. St and no coach in this conference is doing that. Yeah and and Elissa Eli. She was the freshman of the week. And she's just I mean you talk about your hat and your lunch pail like she epitomizes that exactly right. I mean if she pins you. The ball's going in the midst doing a better job of finding her just love the way she plays. I'll see her this weekend at Stanford and can't wait can't just can't wait. Yeah so you'VE GOT UCLA. At Stanford Another top ten showdown. Why NOT Tell me what you're looking forward to on on the farm. Well I I think. Ucla sort of in their their time right now. That we're you play Arizona State you play Arizona and other GONNA come up to the bay and it's it's GonNa be a big big ballgame for them. And how do they handle the size of of Ashton practical inside and and just Kiana Williams and it's going to be an Lexington. Lacy halls can be a great game at eight o'clock on Friday night and it's going to be a terrific match up of of coaches and mindsets and Ucla looking for a continued build and Stanford you know. They they went up to the That's a tough trip to go to Washington and Washington state. You go a long way tough travel. They come home and see what they can continue to put together another twenty win season for Stanford here we go just never hats taxes and twenty one seasons. There's no doubt about that we're bringing up Texas. Ucla Yeah get get them done folks. Abel's coming You know for the Bruins they they they you know. They absolutely just get handed to him by Arizona but then they had a really big critical bounce back win in Tempe on Sunday. They they out. They don't hang their heads and they and they get it done. What do you make overall of the Bruins right now? Do they have an Achilles heel that that's going to you know maybe prevent them from getting what they want to accomplish this season or just overall. What do you make of that squad? Well I think they don't have the kind of size that a lot of teams in the conference have so you've gotta find a way they gotta turn people over guy do a great job at taking care of the basketball? They when they take care of it. They've been successful when they turn it over. Things become problematic. You know your three point shooters have to produce and What can say about Michaela onion wedding? I mean she. She leads them at both ends. But I think size can be an issue and they've got a rattle teams. They've gotta get turnovers and I gotta go. I think core close doing a terrific job with this team at at and Friday night's GonNa be a great test for for both Stanford and Ucla. Chrismas born. I think is going to be another big star coming up. No doubt talking about her. A lot on this podcast in the years to come We gotTA give Big Shot Up to Sherman Smith first. Pac twelve win and it was not easy. You mentioned going up to Washington in Washington state so cal. They're up big. It looks like they've got the wind in the bag On Sunday in Seattle they were up seventeen in the second half and you give credit to the huskies for coming all the way back and forcing overtime. Amber Malgosa was huge at some big time shots. Thirty yeah but in the end The bears came back and got done. And it's it's it's a big deal and something that you know again. It's going to be an uphill battle for this Gal Squad and we've talked about them a little bit this year but they that was a crucial win for them to be able to win not just their first PAC twelve to do it the way they did it. Yeah I mean they did not play well and got pummelled at at at Washington state. And then you make that trip back to U. DUB and you gotta get yourself ready to go and and Chairman. Smith really went to her her senior junior group of Jalen Brown and alasia styles and CJ West. And said I need more from you guys? You know. We've got great freshman but we can't lean on them. I'm leaning on you and I need you guys to step up in those three to eight person stepped up and those are the same people when they announced the Chairman Smith was going to be the coach like had tears running down. There is like we. WanNa do this for Sharman and I guarantee you. That's exactly what was in their mind. Yeah they how easy. If you lead a twelve point lead late just melt away and you go to that huddle and you sit down like you're not getting a towel to wipe off sweat. You're like can I go to a corner and cry? I mean just the emotion of that. That's not what happened. They just came back and they just dominated in that over time and said No. We're winning this one and cj West spoke to exactly that in her post game interview just about how they kind of had to hit the reset button on their mindset and how this is going to be a different team for the stretch run so looking forward to see that U. Dub man so so so close in so many games three overtime losses in their last four games like does does that mess with your psyche. A little bit and four overtimes. This season doesn't mess with your psyche. You better believe that it does but the thing about them is note they never feel like any game is is too far away but they just have to find a way to finish and they've been right there and the important thing is to stay together and keep working and finally come away with those winds but yeah that that is tough but jody. Wynn has the right mindset with this team and with with ever Mel Goza and an MRI Peterson and the rest of that crew. You know that they're gonNA come out fighting every single game no doubt about it Are we ready for our favorite segment? I am always ready.

"What's happening Mary? Murphy? Yet Ashley Adams here. We back again. welcome back to the PODCAST. Everybody Ashley Adams Mary Murphy. Calling feral so happy that you have found us on the first February edition of the inside PAC twelve women's basketball podcast Oregon. Y'All woo their statement games and then there's what happened in store Connecticut last night. We're going to dive into all that in a second one. I mentioned that our guest today is the Patriot player of the week. The one and only air McDonald. But I I gotTa Start Ladies. I smile this morning when I looked at the date because exactly one month from today. Do you know where we will be vegas baby on a plane to Las Vegas baby for four magical magical days at Mandalay Bay And now it'd be a good time to remind people if you haven't made plans to go to the women's basketball tournament just state your tickets packed. S. TWELVE DOT com slash tickets. Mary and I are going to be there. It's going to be a blast. We cannot wait. It's GonNa be wild it's GONNA be exciting Okay so yeah. We got a lot to talk about today. And I and I'm super pump. Did everyone recover from the Super Bowl? By the way. Are we all feeling okay? Today the niners got Mahone. Hey did they did about the ADS. Were great I mean I it. It's not pack with my favorite. Oh that was awesome. Good isn't it weird? Because you're used to like looking at your phone during commercials I near locked in and you're just I can't do anything but watch. Tv for hours there were there. Were some good ones In particular was a fan of the halftime show. I know that there was. Maybe there's been a little bit controversial for some reason but Jalen Shakira absolutely frigging rocked it. They are incredible. It makes me excited to be fifty years old. I went. I went to a zone but class. Afterwards I just like I needed to do some movement Colleen I should ask you have you. Have you recovered from superbowl Sunday? Because you have a different reason you wouldn't be recovered. You ran a Iran Dang half-marathon. Yeah the only reason I run. These things is just so. I can drink and drink beers with reckless. Abandon and eat all the things that are put on the table and I hope you did that. After you ran your half arse of course okay. Good good all right well. We are here to talk about a lot of awesome basketball today. I'm I'm fired up for this. And we're going to get into the Organ Yukon game and one second but let's talk real quick about what happened at halftime that game last night because he ended up. Delays SELECTION COMMITTEE UNVEILED. Its first top. Sixteen seeds of the season and there are five. Pac. Twelve teams so Oregon's four Stanford is six Oregon. State is nine. Ucla is eleven and Arizona. Is Thirteen. Mary I know what jumps out to me but which out to you. The number of teams I just think that's super exciting Arizona certainly being in the reveal Like wow that was just pretty awesome. I just think the totality of it and we've been talking all year about how great this conferences and there was right up there on my giant. Tv It was awesome. Yeah I that those two things obviously Arizona in line to host your move from the W. T. and we're GONNA ask Gary McDonald about that in a minute because that is just awesome and then the other thing that was interesting was Yukon was ahead of Oregon. Obviously after what we saw last night we assume that will change. The second reveal of the two reveals is March second But we we got a dive into what happened at Gamble last night. Because it felt like watching this Oregon Yukon game it provided a tangible snapshot of the progress that has been made. Because if you think back. Sabrina UNESCO and Ruthie Hebrews Freshman Year. They lose to uconn by thirty eight in the elite eight last night. They go into their place on the end of a three game road trip and they not only beat uconn. They hand the huskies their worst loss. In the history of Gampel pavilion. They snapped their sixty six game. Home Win Streak. The significance of that win was what to you Mary. A lot of things. One I think on the stage that it was it in Yukon on ESPN with Rebecca. Lobo and. They're they're number one crew doing the game. It's a statement to the country That this teams for real There's been some doubt. Because of the couple of losses they lost a Louisville but Louisville and the reveals the third seed Arizona State. You know headed that fantastic weekend And I I just think that from top to bottom Sabrina. Almost with a triple double in that setting. I thought Ruthie was fantastic. Twenty two and twelve. The efficiency sought to sabally. Bully was great to start really. Got Them going with the three point. Shots minion more. I don't know if she's ever played better. Yeah it was like. Us what she did best at USC combined with what she's learned while she's at Oregon. It was just a beautiful meld and she was fantastic but the points in the paint people forty four to fourteen forty five plus thirty points in the paint for team and you could see at times. Ruthie looked a little tired sought to look. It didn't matter it was like they were running a marathon but they were running a sprint and they just They really they talk about comply with us and I think we're all flying with him last night. It was awesome. And and the the you know the line of the weekend colleen is as you mentioned. Was Sabrina enter? Post game interview saying you know. I think we should be the barometer now and it doesn't happen overnight And certainly this. This is one game but it it did sort of feel there was about it. That felt symbolic to me. Like a little not. Maybe not changing the guard. I don't want to go that far but Gino. Ram and Yukon has been the standard for so long and for Oregon to come in and beat them. It was their first ever top. Five Road Win in program. History is our first ever win over Yukon. They had been Owen three coming into this game. It just felt like You know this. There's something really special. We know that going on in Eugene and this was like really good tangible evidence of of of how far they've come it was in A. I thought the way they did it. We know that team can be a lot. That can be a lot flashier than they were. It was almost workmanlike and it was at one point. You made a little bit. The door opened a little bit because of a scoring drought by organ. And they never let you go through the door. They just all right. You had your little moment. And then they came back and it was a it was a grinding efficient and tastic performance At I think Oregon. There's a lot more upset. I think they can play even better But it's amazing what they were able to do after three games we. We've talked about it flying across the country but now the challenge really. Is you turn to this weekend. Because today is Tuesday. They play Friday. This is normally their off day. You know and then they'll start getting ready so I I it's it's still. You're on this run aren't you it? It's not the end point it will. It's exactly what Kelly Graves told us on the podcast last week. Just that they're in the middle of this ridiculously tough stretch and and as you mentioned. So now it's a week to kind of regroup and get ready for two ranked squads come into town who are tough as nails in Arizona and Asu. And I want to talk a little about the wildcats before we have airy on So they're now up to number twelve in the AP rankings at their highest ranking since nineteen ninety eight when a Debar this was wearing the longtime ago and and against speaking of statement wins like Fridays win over Ucla. It felt like a statement game. It was their first top. Ten wins since two thousand four. They lost fifty two in a row against ten opponents. Coming into that snapped a thirteen game. Losing STREAK TO UCLA. What did you see from that group on Friday night? Well I think McDonald we. We expect so much from her. But I thought the emergence of Sam Thomas in a game that was so important she plays twenty four minutes and has twenty points and goes three for three from four. I mean she goes four four from three and when the way that that Macdonald can make just find open players if Thomas can hit those threes? It's much like bully. That stretches the floor it makes Arizona a much better team and to go eleven. Twenty four from three that got to the free throw line. They only turned it over ten times that shot. I mean they were they shot a great percentage on the game fifty five percent in front of all those people it just felt like after all the frustration at the end of last season prior to the WNBA. The W. T. And then some of the losses this year that they finally had their moment. Where you kind of move past and say now we're we're we're going on to bigger and better things. Who is the player because we we? Can we talk about area McDonald all the time? And and Kate Reese I think has really stepped up. There's so many different players that you can point to. But who's WHO's making a difference that we need to be shouting out more to me. It's really the whole team. I can't point to one person because and I'm sure we'll talk to you about this. As it was always just area was Arizona was Arizona Arizona last year. It wasn't you know the wildcats and this year they're a team and they're not you've got to prepare for not just one person and that's what turns you into a very good team that gets into a reveal on Monday on. Espn yeah no doubt about it. And Oh man. They got big one coming up Arizona at Oregon six o'clock on the PAC twelve network on Friday night so for more on what's going right in the desert We're fired up to have their stud guard on with us today. She's your PAC twelve player of the week. She was just named the wooden award late season. Top Twenty List and she also happens to be the leading score in the Conference of Champions Area MacDonald. Welcome back to the PODCAST. Thank you for having me. It's awesome to have you on congrats on on all the accolades and things coming your way. It's been awesome to watch you play this year and we got a lot to talk to you about. But I I think I I gotta ask you where were you watching that Oregon Yukon game last night? I was at home in my bedroom watching the game. Yeah what what what. What came to mind as you're watching? Sabrina and Ruthie and minion. Go to work against the. Huskies like she. We've got our hands full society. Yes if we're GONNA talk about that game in just a minute but I also wanted to get your reaction because obviously if you're watching the game you were watching the halftime show What was your reaction to win? The top sixteen teams were revealed by the selection committee because if if the tournament started today you guys would be hosting right now. Four seed yeah. It was won't excitement talking to my dad. They're willing to team. We can possibly host like fleet and it's just like I've been picked for like four..

"Now they've won five in a row so it's going to be. I mean that game is going to be awesome. Can't wait to see that one and then we talk about the civil war. I was GonNa ask you any bold predictions but I think it's time for our favorite segment and now for Murphy's law it's right. It's time let's do it so actually what I want you to do. And you're sitting in a chair but I can stand now. I want you to close your eyes and visualize your guarding Sabrina. You're guarding destiny. Slocum you are in a defensive stance and your job is to stay between Sabrina or destiny and the basket and don't let don't let them score so you're down. You're trying to be big but you've got to think about your balance because if you kind of lean left or right even a little bit for your little off balance they're gonNA blow by you in whichever direction. You're a little off balance if you drop step a little too much. They're going to take that if you lean a little too much. They're going to cross over and get by you now while that's going on behind you. Is Ruthie Hiebert or behind you is Kennedy Brown? And they are going to set a bigger screen. But you can't see that light pole behind you. But you're going to run smack DAB into that sucker and lose your job near jobs to stay between destiny and Sabrina in the basket and so you're listening but it's deafening and you're trying to hear your post player say screens coming at same time. You tried to steer you're trying to is. You're trying to think about where they're going at the same time especially with Sabrina. Twenty five feet. You gotta be out because she might just rock back in. Knocked DOWN THE THREE. So you've got to be close enough that you can't do that but not leaning forward too much that she doesn't blow by you and so that's how someone like. Sabrina scores thirty seven points. And that's how someone likes. Destiny Slocum scores twenty one points and a half against Stanford with all the schemes and makes tar go to plan B. C. and D. So stay between your man on the basket. When you're watching. These games might seem like a really easy thing to do. It is not. You're trying to move backwards while Sabrina and destiny are going forwards so just walk down the street backwards and see. How comfortable do you feel and be in a stance and think? Now I gotTa Stop Destiny. And it's it's tough guys and it's going to be tough for both of them to guard each other and whoever wants to try to stop them. My ankles are broken down here. I didn't even get up on my ankles or just think about it. You know. That's not easy. I'm glad that I don't I get to watch. I'm glad that I don't have that defensive assignment my second thing. Murphy's law watched the game not the refs people are getting obsessed with the refs the refs. There's a million things again. You can watch when you're watching a game. You can watch Sabrina. Who's match up with her? Who's trying to stop her? What's the off ball movement? What's going on in the paint? What's going on on the bench is who's going out. Who's checking in? Who's checking out? What's the crowd doing? What's the momentum? Close Your eyes feel. How does it feel in the building you know? There's so listen to what the announcer saying. What are they looking at? If all you do is sit in obsess about refs you are taking yourself out of the ball game. And it happens with coaches and players. Because you can't it's like trying to drive and look at your phone at the same time. You cannot effectively. Do two things at the same time you've got to focus on the game you got to be in the now make great decisions and if you're a player there's enough things you gotta but if you're like hey if you're trying to engage the whole time you're just not present in the now and what you're trying to get done and it's something when. I was a coach all my God. I spent half my time yelling at refs chasing wraps. Where's the closest ref? Who is it? She the one that I can like really rippon. Nakata's just think about how much time I wasted and I should have been coaching. My team and maybe things would have gone better. That is so interesting and I feel like a very good life lesson to. I mean like the old control what you can control and just you take care of your twenty square feet. No I literally a young head coach. I used to watch the other coach. Like oh look. How far cheers. I'M GONNA go that far too so I don't want her to think she can. Do you know like the hell. Mary what are you doing coach your team but you know crazy stuff goes through your head when you're when you're just trying to to coach man that are doing the best job they can focus on what you can control. What comes out of your mouth. What you're seeing what you're watching trying to fire your team up and get them on the right track. Pick your spots. Pick your spots have four or five good ones like hey you know you saw that one right. Yeah you pick your spots. I love that. Life's all about picking your spots. It is okay one more thing before we let you go. You talk about all the different things to watch. When you're at a game and I know people who have played a game in who analyze the game like you do see different things but I I gotta ask you what. Who's your favorite coach to watch on the sideline coach? That you really Wow THAT'S A. That's a tough question. Let Me Kelly graves is kind of entertaining hill. Rock back and he'll get up and he's kind of fun to watch a Diaz Fun to watch Charlie. Charlie is amazing to me because when we have our miked up the stuff she says that never dawned on me like she like we in terms of way because she's so positive all the time I'm like man I need I. I need a positive lesson from Charlie. She she's just so so positive. That goes back to what you said when we had her on last week. About how grit or toughness was actually being positive in adversity. That's I read that. I was like this a foreign language to Mary Murphy. I had no idea what you're talking about but I think all of them are amazing to watch. An I mean the group of coaches. We have our. It's like you keep a camera on them. I know it's fun. What am I thinking? What are they doing? Yeah there's no doubt about that and I think I would also put Tara in that. Let's even though she's not the most you know. I don't know gregarious or coach on the sideline like she's we had her mic`ed up one time last year for the Colorado game when we were in boulder doing a piece on her mom and I just the stuff that was coming over mouth. That was amazing. Like she's just she's all favorite for a reason and speaking of Stanford Real Quick. One last thing is that they they play Utah this weekend. And we gotTA GIVE. A shout out. So when Roberts because I don't know what the youths had for breakfast on Friday but at Colorado they made sixteen threes keeping the rotation exactly. They shot seventy percent from three. That's just insane and they're do. They've got some great shooters and it. It's unbelievable what making three point shots does because it spreads the floor. It spreads the defense in suddenly. Everything opens up and The Freshman Maxwell big part of that Venetia Provo again. This folks coming back from the sales really starting to get their game back. And it's fun to see in I'm sure STANFORD WILL BE READY FOR UTAH on Sunday. Yeah yeah considering what happened last. May We remind you All right this was another awesome. Podcast I think it's time for us to go but I just thanks to Rebecca. Thank you Mary. You you're awesome. Thanks to our producers calling an Ra R. Researcher Greg and to all of those of you who are listening. We Love You We want to hear from you. So please rate review and subscribe. Enjoy another amazing weekend of PAC. Twelve women's hoops and as my friend. Mary here always says enjoy your life.

"That's that's the thing that separates her. I mean you look at her Her size doesn't separate or harass -bility doesn't separate her her skill certainly or there but it's that attitude and You know you don't like to throw around this comparison too much but it's like An attitude similar to die in Rossi supreme confidence. A feeling that. When you're on the floor all of your teammates will play better and have a stronger. Belief that they're going to win because you're there alongside them and that comes in. It's not a you know kind of fake bravado that some people have it true belief and confidence that she has she's a competitor of she's a winner. And you know those are it put traits. That aren't necessarily measurable In terms of you know how high you can jump or how fast you can move but It's what champions have certainly has that Rebecca so interesting that you mentioned to Rossy When I was thinking about questions I think about you interview and used to have that segment where the five questions you ask. People and just looking for their reaction. I'm GonNa ask you a question your top five competitors women's basketball players that you've seen and here's my list to Rossi. Kim Mulkey Carol Blazejowski player. Sabrina and I really couldn't come up with a fifth. Just people that monkey. He was guarding you or Mulkey was playing like you look at her coach but when she was plank she played the way she coaches. I mean an employee's Joustie was just like the ball and get out of the way and Terachi. We all know what she does and I think. Sabrina belongs in that in that group. Yeah I I I would agree with you. I mean there are certain players that just have that it factor. You know you might throw sue bird in there to You know we've seen that over the course of her career whether it was when she was in college but she's take she's so night even is the yeah but she's not. Nice on the corner young. You know you do remember Michelle voelpel article where you know Food Nick. Nickname was sued. Db bird and dv sped for died That's what her opponents. The caller so forgive my language but But you know that the perception from all the people who played against and I think I think all of those people that you mentioned have that kind of mentality there s you know it's Yeah there's ears and And so I. I certainly agree with your list. You know I remember Carol Blaze Jockey a little bit as a player but she was my gm five years. When I was at the liberty as she was the same way as agree with you I love it. I love that. Yeah that's getting married. You married DB or on the call. I think sometimes I get a little. It's a little excited. She's willing to Fudge big-picture Rebecca. Tell me kind of from your perspective because we talk all the time and obviously this is a pack twelve women's basketball podcast so we are all in on the PAC twelve and I think sometimes we get that. That singular focus that. It's hard for us to see sort of the national perception. So give me a feel for what the national perception of the pack twelve is this. Obviously we've got six teams right now in the top twenty and some legit final four contenders. But what what from a national perspective as you as you work on? Espn that you think. This conference is all about right now in this year. I think anyone who's paying attention recognizes that it's the best conference women's College Basketball Right now. You know last weekend or whenever it was when we were watching The upsets by Arizona. State I was just sitting there thinking. How would you would not want to play in this conference right now? The fans are rabid. They're coming out and watching. There's such great basketball You know I mentioned this on our got through the night like it's killing my bedtime. My Friday night Saturday morning. I have to get up early on Saturday. Mornings to go coach basketball and it's crushing me But I think everyone's everyone's aware of what's happening out there and and you know it's been growing over the past few years obviously but I think there's a real recognition this year You know what's happening and how good the conferences and I think a lot. More people are paying attention to what's happening out there. And when you talk about people paying attention Ashley alluded to a little bit like Koby. Doing the goat emoji with Sabrina and Lebron and like Klay Thompson was up in pullman. For his big Jersey retirement and then he presents the ball to bobby hearst. Ova For her two thousand point. I mean the crossover for men men in NBA Wmba and the college game. What where's this coming from? Interested in exists. You know just a couple of years ago. Yeah it's really cool to see that it's coming over to the college game as well because you don't marry from covering the LA sparks like it's GonNa last few years where the NBA players have really. seamless form some sort of synergy with their wnba counterparts. You know they come to gain they tweet about the players sometimes you NBA guys wearing wnba players. Jerseys it's been happening the last couple of years and the WNBA and it's nice to see that it's now filtering into the college game as well Whether it's Lebron or colby or whoever it's going to be I it. It feels like that movement is happening and You know kind of in line with what we've seen in the crossover and the WNBA the last couple of years and And that's exciting. Because you know her first so you know for so long. It's been You know some casual fan or just idiots. You know making fun of women's basketball or denigrating women's basketball but it's never been NBA players. Who have done that you know I. I've always felt like the the players and the people who give the female athletes. The most respect are the guys because you know they've come up in the college system You know seeing how hard the women work. They've appreciated the game. They appreciate what the women are doing. And and and I think you're seeing that more and more rebecca. You said something that I just have to have to follow up on the idiots that maybe weren't paying attention. So you have a fabulous podcast with your husband that you've been doing for a couple of years. I think and and for listeners. Who may not know? You're married to Steve Russian. Very well known. Well respected writer in sports journalist known for his work with sports illustrated. I- your podcast is called ball and chain. It's an awesome. Listen I'm going to give it a plug. You guys. Should if subscribe if anyone on this. Podcast doesn't subscribe. Please do you to record from your basement at home in Connecticut. I I want to ask you kind of how that started. And why but I. I got to ask you the story of how you met. Steve at least from what is on the Internet is kind of legendary. Can you can you? Can you share that story with our listeners? Yes sure of course So I was playing for the New York. Liberty and And Steve was writing for sports illustrated and lived in Manhattan and And I I was coming back from an ACL injury. So I was reading. You know I'd have to ride a stationary bike at my physical rehab every day for like an hour so I was constantly reading stuff on the bike and sports illustrated was one of those things that I would always read and and so the weekly call them In the magazine and I would read that every week and At one point he within a column he made a joke about the WNBA. Throwaway line. Something like you know much like Wilt Chamberlain. I slept with eight thousand women last night. I was in a standard that New York liberty game or something like that so anyway I was subletting an apartment from a friend of mine in New York to who also happen to work at sports illustrated he. He was showing me the neighborhood. We went out to this. Local dive bar called the Dublin House and he said to me You know I've got a buddy who's going to a couple of buddies but we're GONNA meet us out for a drink later and I was like okay. Great so one of the people that came in and was Steve Russian and And so pretty soon. After I met him I said to him. Aren't you the guy who made fun of the WNBA in a recent Column and he said Yeah I am and I said well how many WNBA Games have you been to any said. None and I said well first of all if you had been to a game you would know that you were sleeping with thirteen or fourteen thousand seven hundred eighty we draw at Madison Square Garden But anyway we eventually a friendship developed in later on that year we started dating. And now we're married and and he. He is still horrified about that comment whenever anybody bring it up because he like he's not one of the the idiots out there he was just looking for a throwaway line that he thought was funny but yet he. I don't think you will ever live at now. You know what though but maybe that was the line that got you to talk to him so in the end I mean it's like the one of the greatest comeback stories of all time. Yes that's.

"My new favorite segment and now for Murphy's law. It's right now it's time what do you got for me? I got to one mindset matters and I'm going to do a broad brush on this cal Friday at Stanford just got blown out. Didn't look good. Sunday come compete and really. I think it was thirteen. Point game and at one point I mean they just really just their mindset changed and it matters Colorado pick twelve. They will spend this season with a chip on their shoulder. The size of an iceberg are right now forty two six best in the conference there down twenty-five Ucla and come roaring back on a seventeen to two run freshman. Jalen Sharad Mrs Three Pointer. You'll hear a lot about her as we go on dish. Provo coming back from the A. C. Injury wants to you. Know she wants to be Dorthy. Wants to click our heels and her back last year when she's healthy and it's coming back seventeen points they get their first win against SC MIC pivot. Whatever happened on Sunday Friday night? She took care business. Won that game down the stretch with the big time shot and I can't say enough about Jamie Rudin. Her list of injuries from the time she was a freshman till this year. Unbelievable they take a road trip to Minnesota. She's from Rochester. Sorry Jamie you can't play your hurt. This has been her entire life in in two minutes and eight seconds against Oregon. Scores seven points twice responding. Take the lead. Then you lose it. Take the lead back. I mean just when you need it. She was money and her. Mom's there is Charlie told US unbelievable. My last thing celebrate when good things happen. That's why every Friday night if I'm home. I have champagne pizza. 'cause you got to celebrate life and good things. Charlie talked about it. Go to somebody's house. Have whatever it is when good things happen. You better enjoy it you know. I love that because it reminds me of one of the most poignant memories of my career which when the PAC twelve networks launched in August of two thousand twelve and and rick new highs left after we did our big launch show. We all went into the touchdown room and Rick and his wife sewer there and he had a very nice bottle of champagne and he kinda gathers altogether and he said. Hey almost verbatim. What you just said wins. You never know when you're next is going to happen. And so when you do something meaningful you have to take the time to celebrate. After every single win rick set in his career they would go home and have a bottle of champagne. Exactly it's it's I mean I love that and I'm a nickel sale expert at Bev Mo and also there's a place in Berkeley odd lots that has great buys as well so you just gotTa know where to go so that when you celebrate. You don't break the bank should we? Should we start having a bottle of champagne after every podcast? I feel like there's a lot to celebrate. Oh colleen calling is claiming in. Do you think that we could get that approved in the budget? What do you think yeah sure? Okay I'll write it off. See that's why you gotta ask on the podcast because if you ask on the air and they say yes then you got hold them to it. calling you got you got anything for us. I remember you had that good nugget last week about the players of the week and and all the different no-go tap tap. We went in for ten weeks. Nine different players won it. I feel like I already told you on my notes when we were pre prowling. You gave us all you gave us all your next and then I use them all and then I ask if you have any. That's no good talent but yeah I'm excited for Kelsey on our network and and just having her back in the mix That'll be fun on Friday. But Yeah I am. I keep looking. I'm looking at the stats for Thursday's Game San Fernando Oregon that end. Mary I just WanNa know like who's going to be. I don't know who's at player that we're not talking about. That's going to step up for that game. Well we're not talking about enough. Yeah my pay attention for that. Game is Stanford's youth is going to be tested when you start to freshman and when four in the rotation we're talking about Haley Jones Practical inside Fran believe Hannah. Jump Ashton practical Are they going to be able to perform on that level on that stage with with that kind of attention we're GONNA learn a lot about Stanford this weekend against Oregon Oregon State and you're GONNA be in Corvallis I will be in? Corvallis is awesome for the yeah so Oregon State cal on Friday and then Stanford Oregon State on Sunday at Gills. GonNa be Rockin. It sure is yeah. Make sure the bathroom before the game watch. Don't forget Okay let last thing before we go and and again Charlie made mention of it but it this th the news came out today about the WNBA and the new tentative deal on it. It's a huge deal and if you want more detail the thing that I would recommend is going to twitter and searching for Genego McKay. It's at three twenty one. She has been an integral part in the players. Union being able to help negotiate this and she really has a breakdown of what it actually means. And it's she breaks it down by the different categories of player salary and compensation which again just some of the highlights thirty percent increases salary. Cap Higher. Max Players. Sally goes from one hundred and seventeen. Thousand Two hundred and fifteen thousand and it's the first time ever the average player compensation is going to be in six figures and then working moms players are going to receive full salary while on maternity leave. There's a new annual childcare stipend player experience individual hotel rooms for every player. How about that? Can you imagine? Nba guys shared a hotel room sharing a suite. No I mean just small mandatory extra legroom seats on flights plus more flexibility than ever before order charters when necessary offseason job opportunities with league partners as alternative option to overseas so they just did so many different things including new mental health resources and she has a great breakdown on all of that. So I WANNA say my hat off to her her sister. Neka Lady Clarendon also in leadership positions and leadership matters Cathy Engelbert takes over for the WNBA and understood what needed to happen and negotiated with her group along with the Players Association. And the people you've mentioned but I think this is also a message to Fans College Fans PAC twelve fans. You've got to support these teams. You've got to get out and buy tickets. You've got to watch them. You gotTA support the companies that support them. Because you can't you know increase what you're spending if people aren't spending money on the WNBA you gotta get out there and get after it and support Kelsey plum. She plays at Vegas. Do everything you can because when you watch college basketball get excited you watch the WNBA. Watch some of the people that you've followed throughout their four years. It's amazing how good the basketball is. It's a phenomenal product. And this is again just a huge step in the right direction. And I'm I'm I'm excited about it. We're GONNA talk more about this. I think again with Rebecca Lobo who is our guest next week on the podcast and again as you mentioned Mary. She's calling that the day night game on ESPN between Oregon and Stanford that's at six o'clock and it's It's GonNa be fun before we go. You have any.

"Just not just the celebration after but like just even the Games were fun. You know But afterwards I mean Gosh you know how forces it's the total you know exhilaration you complete high and then you know and then the opposite so You know I always tell our team we never get to. Don't don't ever get too high when you win. Don't ever get to you. Never been as you think you are when you win. And you're as you think when you lose and you know we just they even killed here at issue but no it was. It felt like March Ashley. It's just like Martin this that that was it was that kind of jubilation and enjoy and and just you know wow you know we did it and then things came together. You know you know actually like we expected. We wanted them to so. I think I think you know after Oregon. It was just like. Oh my gosh you know. What an amazing accomplishment and then to have to turn around and play the number three team in the country you know you didn't really have you know I literally went back home and you know got right back to it and then after that win. I think that was when you could really just enjoy you. Know a great weekend and and The accomplishment that your team had and and Yeah you know you just you think about you. Think about former players you hear from you. Think about how you're moving fans. It's the eight around in charge to court and all your donors that gives you money you know. Sometimes you feel like men are we letting them down. You know but I think one thing So I just felt preach to you know to to people I feel like you know I don't know this for all their everything they pour into our program. I just feel like okay. You know we we made people happy you know but yeah we made ourselves happy too. Don't get me wrong but it was. Yeah just that that part you really soak in. You know you're really soaking you know 'cause it's everything is you know relationships and and how we feel and stuff you know the the success thing. That's all fleeting. So we we did. I did really soak that up in an embrace out a little bit more than I normally do so. Yeah Hey for you could work life balance. Very Good Charlie. That's awesome. I'm going on my confessions. I don't know why you guys did. We love it. I know I don't do that with anybody out. So something special about you One of the real tangible benefits of when in those two games as Charlie cream comes out with Khaldi and you go from dreaded tend to lake fantastic five. I mean that's a that's quite a weekend. Yeah I think we're getting into that period. Let's face it in and you guys know I mean the pre season you know we don't really know right like probably played that many good teams and and you know I always Kinda tell everybody up contenders from the pretenders are gonNA start separating by you know late January early February. You know it's GonNa. It's GONNA start sorting itself out and I still think there's you know a good month here you know where I mean clearly. We have to finish. Everybody needs to finish strong and continue to get better through February. But I feel like you know especially the power five conferences where you're just it is just a grind and you're playing great teams weekend and week out. You know I mean you know the great teams finding a way to win. You don't have that level of consistency and we still have a good one to know that. Is I think you guys agree? Yeah and I think and that to me and we'll we'll let you. You've been so generous with your time. And we we really appreciate this but I I think that's one of the biggest things you talk about. How felt like March winning those games in the elation that you guys had and obviously now the task is to regroup refocus sort of forget about that but also take some whatever you're able to learn and move forward you've got to Washington school. Is this weekend on the road and and you said something that you know the teams you fear. The most are the ones that play hard so just tell. Tell me what you've seen from Washington so far this year. That indicates that you know it's obviously going to take another total team effort on Friday. Yeah well there. I mean both Washington Washington state. I mean they they. We didn't get to play wash last year. That was the Snow Day. but You know they're both. I mean you know that's a perennial top programme right. I grew up through that program. That was where I was a graduate. That we outgrew our men. There it's just a great basketball talented program. Jody's CRISCO fantastic job. And she continues to bring in more and more talent But yeah they play hard like both these teams especially when they're at home they just have great energy And you know Washington you know. They're surprised who change and all different defenses and then you know they have one of the best. Scores Conference in Washington State has to the rescuers conference. And you know. They've got side than they've ever civility Yeah I mean I was just kind of going back and forth one of our signees You know about like you know. Hey these games this week. We'll be every bit as tough like like take and she's like yeah. I I have you know we were just kind of going back and forth on that because I'm trying to get her ready right You know it's like yeah. That was great but trust me. We're going to have to play every bit as hard as well to to keep winning in this conference 'cause You know all all teams are very well. Coached and all teams have the talent to beat the teams. They just do you know. And that hasn't always been the case but it is this year in my opinion. Yeah no it's it's that's what makes you know it's so fun for us and obviously a lot of work for for you and your program. So Washington. Friday at seven o'clock in Washington state Sunday at noon. Both of those Games are on the PAC twelve network coach. I can't tell you enough for thank you for the time and the honesty we always you. Just you always bring it and we we appreciate you. Tell Quinn that I'll text him this weekend. If you guys get another sweeps on around. I'm on my own this weekend. Funny but thank you guys. I really appreciate you appreciate the PAC twelve network and everything you do for all of us so thank you go devils but there is something about you marry that that gets people to be honest and tell the truth especially Charlie Turner Thorne and I. I love that she said I don't know what it is. But every time she comes on this podcast she ends of saying something. Just love watching her coach. It's inspiring she's awesome by the way we should mention that udub. Asu Game on Friday. Pac twelve network Kelsey plum. The Great Kelsey plan will be making her PAC twelve network debut. She's calling the game alongside our good friend. Guy Haberman so looking forward to the crowds are going to be super pump to welcome her back So okay let's there's a few things that we need to to mention and obviously again. There's there was this. Podcast could be three hours long. But we'll we'll try to keep it as as tight as possible that asu performance this weekend it overshadowed a Lotta storylines and not just in the PAC twelve but nationally I think I mentioned earlier. It's the first time ever that the top three ranked teams went down. In the same week Baylor ended Yukon. Ninety eight game home winning streak on Thursday and that was you know again that was just like a little asterix to the weekend and then you look at the. Ap Number One two three nine ten eleven and twelve all last this past week it's been just completely unpredictable. South Carolina is the fourth different team to hold the top spot in the people. This season and Mary there has never ever ever been five different number. One teams in the same year since it became a riders pool. And obviously I I. I would imagine that's GonNa Happen because we're sitting here in January. So what what does all that mean? Does this feel different than than other years? Oh I don't think there's any doubt about it and it feels different in in in our conference. It feels different nationally. I love the attention that the PAC twelve is getting and that people recognize. It's the best conference in the country. You know during the Games I've got Rebecca Lobo texting me in different people from ESPN and different writers. And it is this for real. What's happening I mean? People is of women's basketball are coming out west and realizing that it's it's the same as Watson Yukon. It's as Tennessee South Carolina Baylor. So it I just feel like the women's basketball country has gotten a lot bigger. Yeah we're being included does nice it is nice and Rebecca Lobo. I'm glad you mentioned her. Because you booked. Her is our guest next week on the podcasts which she herself she said yes. I will cost you booked herself either way. She's GonNa be on Pod next week which is going to be awesome. A ten to talk to her about I. We gotTA talk about Little more on on the Arizona Oregon game. 'cause I'm I'm watching that game on Sunday and I'm thinking wow. I'm looking at the box score. They've really lock to bring down. She had six point seven for the fourth quarter and literally as I'm thinking about that Amery Anderson who's calling the game for us texts me and says hey just a heads up keep an eye on triple double number twenty two. I'm thinking what's I. Eight rebounds and eight assists is what Sabrina had at the time and she said you know the points always come and she ended up being exactly right. I mean she bring ended up finishing with her twenty second career triple double and the best part was the video that went completely viral afterwards. It was when she came over to do the post game interview which she had no idea that she had a triple double. And she's going. Tennessee's what are you kidding? And the best part is that the end and if you watch it all the way the end she looks at the box score and she says six turnovers and hands it back Tamarins. So that's not okay. It doesn't even count. Yeah in the six turnovers though and a the retweets Lebron respond. Not just re tweet with comment queen. Sabrina yeah her following his amazing. But I'll tell you what it's GonNa be a buzzsaw. This weekend when Count Stamford and Thursday. Night it.

"`Bout that indeed. I'm they're still partying on mill avenue. I think what seventy two hours later Cindy Brunson on the call for us on the PAC twelve network after an absolutely epic epic weekend. I'm losing my voice law radium. I'm so excited about it. Mary Murphy Actually Adamson with you. Welcome back to the PODCAST The most sought after interviewing women's College Basketball Asu head coach Turner. Thorne's she's GonNa join us in just a few moments. I cannot wait to talk to her but Mary. You've been doing this quite a while. Can you remember a bigger regular season weekend for a team? I can't yet and I texted Charlie this after both games. It didn't surprise me. Everyone seems so shocked. And there's just like you could feel the reverberations like this. Giant earthquake took place in women's basketball. But I sort of sat in the bay area because I was doing cal. Stanford a weekend and I wasn't surprised because I'm never surprised when Charlie's teams are prepared and when Charlie's teams win games whether the underdog or not and so it was epic but I think down in Tempe Annette Locker. I'm like yeah that's right. This is what we do. It was unbelievable and the celebration after both Games was was incredible and amazing. And if you haven't watched it just get on twitter and and look it up because it's it's awesome. It is pure joy at his. Why you play the sport and coach the sport no doubt about it Arizona state by the way the first unranked team ever to be two top five teams in back to back Games ever ever put that in like gold with like cups ever stamped we should stanford did it. Most recently. In two thousand ten they were ranked they took down Number four number one yukon. But there's just so much to talk about. I don't want to completely ignore some of the other storylines because there was another wildly entertaining weekend. Certainly oh by the way. Sabrina got twenty. Second triple double. We'll we'll get to that in a minute and tip the cap to UCLA. Who is the last remaining undefeated team in the nation sixteen to know after getting by surviving that Rocky Mountain Road trip Utah and Colorado and this surprises me Mary? This was unbelievable stat. The first time ever that the PAC twelve has had the last undefeated team in the nation right but if we had started our podcast in the preseason would we have voted for Oregon. Would we have voted for Oregon State? Would we have assumed it would be Stanford? Would you ever have imagined it would be? Uc L. A. Absolutely not I mean the job. They're doing that just and they're just flying steady under the radar of course steady until they were up twenty five and Colorado said No. We're going to have a rocky mountain high. Let's go and get after it. Yeah no doubt. We'll talk a little bit later in the podcast because it's not just happened in the PAC twelve if it's happening nationally and it's fun I mean it's it's wild that it's making everything hard to predict but we're setting up for a fantastic march. There's no doubt about it okay. So a Asu where. I don't even know where to start with this other than that. You you kinda warned everybody on the podcast last week. With Murphy's law you said pay attention in particular to what was going on in Arizona this weekend. Well I think if you think about Tucson as well the organs could have been swept on the weekend with what Arizona almost pulled off as well with the DEA Barnes and the great crowds there they were pretty darn close competed. Hard just couldn't get to the finish line but you know there's been so much conversation about. Asu would they be ready for that second game because of all the emotion Hubbert Oregon State? You're just coming off that game where pivot at the end needed to come up with her usual heroics and now you're on the road and you're you're traveling up the road. The I tend to go to Arizona State and you've got to play The Sun devils. This thing goes both ways. It's not all it's pressures on. Asu We'd beat one. Can we beat the other? Hey Oregon State can you beat? Can you chase around area McDonald and that high flying team and that great defensive team in Tucson and now can you do it again in Tempe? This is now the second road trip in the conference maybe in the country because of look at the defensive stats who locked you down better than Asu in Arizona with two different styles of defense. This is a brutal road trip that certainly going to organism is no easy peasy but You know flip that scrip a little bit on if you're Oregon state now you gotta go walk in that building and play. Asu that that's that's not easy. That's a great point man. I think you know it's no secret. How Much Arizona? Asu that that is a real real true rivalry obviously but it is kind of. Nice to have your home partner. Be A team. That is that good. I mean that that that's helpful. There's no doubt I'm sure Charlie will mention that when we talked to her. You know back a couple years ago. You know was breezed through Tucson lay by the pool. Hang OUT ENJOY THE SUN. Get warm from maybe being cold wherever your school is and then you're going to go up to to. Tempe and have a challenge. Now there's no hanging by the pool like you've got to be in your room hydrating and th this is. This is for real weekend no doubt about it so it just in case for whatever reason you you didn't get to watch two of the greatest upsets ever just briefly a quick recap Friday. Sabrina and two Oregon come into Tempe. They were going to be the number one team if they had they had been able to survive and same with Oregon State. They had a chance to be number one because UCONN lost on Thursday. And the first. I'd say three quarters. It felt like it was close organ was in control you got Riley. Richardson playing with the flue. She had one hundred degree fever and then Oregon they just. They had some uncharacteristic turnovers. I think they finished with seventeen but it looked like they were going to escape. I thought they were and then the fourth quarter rolled around. And it's like is that Robbie Ryan Reilly Richardson or is that Klay Thompson. Instead they just come out and just asu. That's always been the thing is that where's the offense? GonNa come from. And all of a sudden they just hit some huge Jamie Rudin hit a huge three and the place was going nuts and it was. It was just unbelievable to see like where did that come from. Okay when you need it. Most you go five of six from three in the fourth quarter and asu seventeen to two points off turnovers against Oregon. Seventeen to two. I mean it's just a mind boggling number and the energy in that building and the fans and people rising up and it's just that moment an Oregon had it when they played the United States women's team that feeling in Eh when people look at each other in the stands like Oh my God visit evaluating and you could feel it with Tammy and Cindy on the call I mean it just it just Kinda you just float away with it. It's really exciting. I mean Tammy with the with the chest bump With that was that was Riley. Richardson right I think. Or maybe knows Robby Ryan. After the game the chestnut was was pretty great. I mean Robbie Ryan's the type of person who she gets excited. She walks up to a wall and chest but I mean she's just an excitable personality that she was glad she had. She had to kind of give it a little. Because Ra- Rodney could knocked over. I mean Romney. Dharavi did not mess around. So you kind of alluded to it to after that game you think are. Maybe there's going to be a little bit of a hangover. Obviously they they were playing Riley was sick. There's Kiki Kiki didn't even play. He can Russell And so you wonder you you pull off a win like that and then can you regroup and forty eight hours later. Take on a team again. That is going to be. Potentially the number one team in the country mic pivot. Hit the guest on the podcast. She hit the game winner in Tucson on Friday. And it just seemed like okay this you know. Maybe they'll keep a close but no way. Are they going to win? Both of these games and the script was slipped a little bit from what we saw Friday night as you actually I think led most of the way and then the beavers made that late comeback to tie it up but the Sun was didn't flinch and that's the mark of of a team. That's progressing Mary. Because you can. You can win from coming behind you can win from surviving a run by the other team and you want to see your team win in those different ways. There's no doubt and just the ability to hit free throws when you need to need to make them You know down the stretch you go six six from the line and you know those are those are the moments aren't they? I mean you practice. Free throws and coaches always say okay. Pretend it's the you know the inner like right here just a little little zone like when we eating and you just move on boy the moneyball. You're at that free. Throw line you miss going down with an opportunity to make two or three you make your sealing victory and the greatest epoch weekend ever. I mean that's the kind of pressure that Richardson and Robbie just just thrive on and I go back to last year. Think about all those close games. They had where they came back against. Utah at home like that epic. That was the job they did at Utah. They had three or four games last year. Where this core group just came on and was able to pull him out. They lost so many scores. When you think about ibis and Sharon H Johnson Chapman and J Chapman Johnson. Sorry and they just their ability to just just reload and reconfigure and put together go play small ball and be big ball and I think that's one of the biggest storylines and Asu's bench in both of those games I think. Acs Bench at Twenty five points against Oregon and maybe thirteen or fifteen minutes to Oregon state. And I WANNA ask. Ct about this but sh she always the hockey rotation she. She always unloads her bench. But you you really think when when you play the elite teams that most coaches tighten their bench of a little bit. At least. That's my impression. Y- of Charlie doesn't yeah and the thing that is a. It's so beautiful about Charlie and and Is is consistency. I play my bench. She's just not saying that when she's recruiting people but she's doing it in in February and March on and now in January. It's just she is a key incredibly consistent. You believe her when she tells you something. And what that means is a as a player is my coast coach. Trust me they need me and when I go out just put it all out there and something happen and you could see that time and time again and Charlie is GonNa join us in just one minute but before we welcome on the head coach of the Sun Devils. Let's just mentioned so a issue goes from being unranked and they're now eighteenth in the latest p pulled that that saw tun of shakeup never before the top three teams lost in the same week in the regular season. Can I say you May? You're on ranked your issue and ranked first of all. That's a problem second. You beat two and three and you move in to eighteen on. Yeah come on news writers you think they should have been higher. Well what do you think well? Let's just okay. So let's go through the PAC twelve now has six ranked teams that ties a record. Stanford's Third Oregon six. Ucla as seven Oregon State is eight and Arizona is twenty one so the biggest surprise to you and all of that is is that issue isn't higher yes and I think Arizona should be higher quite honestly but it does it really matter i. It's like talking to a reporter for the L. A. Times yesterday and I mean it's kind of like twitter with likes. You Know Ashley you always have more likes than I do. And so you know but it's it's just it's sort of a contest right and so what what really matters is our Pi. What really matters as as things progress where you're gonna you know maybe Brecca technology means more but it. It's just something that's in the paper and gets people's attention and makes mom and dad's happy so what you're saying is that your content on twitter is way better than mine even though I get more likes. That's probably accurate. Were you mentioned Balaji so it should just real quick charlie cream. It was fascinating so as you goes from being a projected ten seed to now. There are a five seat in his latest stunning. It is and I. I can't remember a team that made that kind of jump after one weekend. It see. That's that's a lot more real to me than than pull by coaches or a poll by by you know people that write in the newspaper or social media. Yeah all right well. We are running out of ways to describe what these winds meant to. Asu So let's get a little bit of help. Showy let their head coach..

"And now for Murphy's law who emerged law. This started a segment from the Great Michael Monarchy. Mars is a phenomenal phenomenal game producer for us at the PAC twelve network and Murphy's law itself is sometimes misunderstood. I went down a rabbit hole on the Internet last night about Murphy's law but essentially it's as everyone knows that if anything can go wrong tonight thing yeah yeah human gloom line. So what we're going to do is Murphy's law every week on the podcast. We obviously talk about the big match ups in the Big Games but in the segment. Mary's going to tell you what what specifically to pay attention to in the upcoming slate of games that we can because one interpretation of Murphy's law obviously is that upsets are going to happen so as you look at the game coming up this weekend Mary. Would we pay attention to big picture? One thing is for every fan of petrol. Women's basketball honestly get your PAC twelve APP. Get on their watch. Highlights watched some of your team look at stats. Look at the upcoming schedule. Who's playing who? Where are those games? What are the trends? There's so much information on there that you can digest. Look that you can look stats. How teams doing individuals and really get a feel for what's coming down remember. It's an unbalanced schedule. Everybody doesn't play everybody twice. So there's GonNa be some imbalance there. Some schedules are tougher than others. Core close talked about that with me last night. So just you know. Try to wrap your head around that and then just don't have an expectation that a team like Oregon State. We alluded to this. A little bit earlier are going to go to the desert role. They're not going to the desert role. These are going to be great games and across the board. This is the table. That's going to be set every single weekend. So don't be surprised by anything and every quarter every half every minute on the floor matters every possession matters because any little slippage teams are going to take advantage of it. So you know just roll with it. But kind of widen out. Whatever your team is and try to get a feel for what the what's going on all over the place because this conference we thought it was good ash and now it truly is better than we even expected when you look at the top ten look what. Ucla's doing Arizona Arizona state just up and down. There's going to be a lot of surprises so pay attention. That's the Murphy's law pay attention. People pay attention so what? What's the what's maybe the matchup? We talked about the desert. But what's maybe one of the match ups that we really need to Pay Tech Oregon Arizona on. I think it's going to be a fantastic game. Can't wait to see how Oregon matches up with with Arizona. We're seeing Oregon play a lot. More three-quarter court pressure trying to chew up clock. So teams can't get in the half court teams like Stanford and teams like Oregon State. That have ten thousand plays in their playbook. Don't have all that time to run their action. So they're gonNA try to chew things up so all you have is maybe fifteen ten seconds to get off. It turns into a quick hitter instead of running full. You know through everything you're trying to do but that game it's going to be dynamic. Think about McDonald matching up with Sabrina. And just keep an eye on Mignon more the transfer from USC. The graduate transfer is a difference maker. She's doing a terrific job she's coming on in. Mignon matters and she's fun to watch. I just gotTa say Calling Farrell's our fabulous producer of this podcast. Choline we gotTA figure out a way to get. This thing streamed because Mary Murphy Right now. Like she is in her element I. It's a good thing that she's tethered to the desk with her headset. Because otherwise she'd be like standing on the desk right now. She's you're very effusive in your body movement and it gets me really excited. Me and Marie Anderson always talks about well. We're blocking her out during broadcast. Yeah it gets me fired up and players like magnon more. Just you know they just make you want to dig in get out there and play calling. Can you make it happen? You can do that one more thing. There is kind of you need to when you're talking about the depth of the league. We've had nine weeks of ball and there have been eight different player of the week now. I love that. That's I think that's something going forward. We could definitely talk about for sure and the surprising thing is the only player. That's repeated is not Sabrina. Not every it is key piece. Yeah shocking look at colleen just dive in at the last second with a wonderful stat. I love that stuff all right so Friday. All five games are on the patch will network and your PAC twelve now at. Be Sure you download that. App COVERAGE STARTS AT FIVE. O'clock with number to organise you and then seven. Pm As we mentioned Oregon State at Arizona. Mary is going to be at Stanford for the battle of the bay. Cardinal Golden Bears. And I just WanNa say I want this to be a little more interactive. The podcast be more interactive this year. So if you have a question or a hot take or something that you want to know about Mary or me or calling that you never got your answer to tweet us at real. Mary Murphy not the fake Mary Murphy at Real Mary Murphy. Okay let me just say this. My mom does read my twitter feed so people. Let's be kind. Does she read your mentioned. I don't know exactly how deep we go but sometimes I do have daughter-in-law's who go over there and help out with that. So let's let's be okay so if you have anything that you yeah then feel free to. My mom does not read my twitter. I wish to your mom. Yeah maybe I should start sending it to her actually. I'm glad she doesn't. I'm glad she doesn't follow me on twitter. That's been that's been a good thing for our relationship probably Thank you everyone for for coming back and listen to us. We are so so so excited to get this thing fired up again. I love it Rate reviews subscribe. Tell us what you think. And we'RE GONNA WE'RE GONNA be back next Tuesday but that's GonNa do it for us so long from San Francisco..

Yeah I love my goal right now is to play basketball possible whether that's here in the Wnba the US or whether that's overseas and want to pursue that I and then when that's nine I like to go to medical school and be either a pediatrician or psychiatrist. one of the to be my goal. Amazing Amazing One thing. I love to share is Make your first two years. I never looked at me or said Hi. You just would walk. Am I right smile? That maybe time maybe if I caught it and now you walk right up in your like. Hi Mary how are you today? And it's it's how much of your personality the last year and a half as really started to come out on the floor and just with just with everybody around. You definitely come more confident in who I am and being able to share that with people outside of our team. I know like with our team. Really comfortable and I've been around the Milwaukee. They've opened me up Early on and I think being this culture being this environment everybody being so accepting who you are whatever that may be that it's been able to translate to outside of our team and helped me blossom into who becoming Definitely a lot more open to you. Talking to New People and Starting conversations with people. I probably wouldn't have started with before coming here and I'm going to ask you about your kind of you coming in your own in your sense of humor your personality because that has come out a big way in a in a blog that you're doing for we're gonNA live but before we do that. I got my hat to you because a lot of actual student athletes are really involved in their communities. But you take that to a completely different level. Mary printed out your linked. I'M GONNA I'M GONNA JUST. It's making me feel really inadequate but the thing that clearly out. Mek is just your experience with all the volunteer work you do and I. I mean we don't even have time to run through it all but you are so involved with so many different meaningful organizations. It seems like you've been that way since you know since you were younger so tell me about a some of the stuff that you're doing right now in the community and be like where where that drive comes through. Because I know you don't have a lot of spare time on your hands yeah I think it started for my parents to me. being grape off. What you have and giving back to others who may not have as much as you So when I was in high school and middle school my mom would out to you. families who were less fortunate and needed some help with household chores or maybe The mowing the yard or pruning bushes in the back We traveled to local families together and spend time with them and also spend time with each other And I think a lot of it is my faith with God and knowing that he Has placed me here for a reason. There could be people that are able to play basketball but he let me have this opportunity. This platform to impact others inspire others so trying to maximize that And currently A lot of us are going to On our team going to stony brook quits assisted living place with a lot of elderly to cook meals for them or interact with them as well as Any children's centered activities in the community whether that's going to interact a recess with kids or going to read books with them in the library But we try to maximize this platform. Impact others The most you can. I just want to tell you that before we brought you on. I said the best way that I can describe you is that she's exactly who you hope. Your daughter grows up to be and I think that that answering some of the insiders speaks to exactly why I feel that way. So it's just it's awesome. What you're doing one of the other things you're doing in all of this spare time that you have is is like. I said right in that blog for Oregon live Scott Rookie. Coach was the one who who told me about it and I did kind of deep dive last night. And there's just so much great insight. I highly recommend for for people who are listening whether you're in Oregon State Fan or not you can just Google. You know cable pivot and blogging. It'll come up but one of the things in there that I that I really realized there's not only are you a great writer but you have a wonderful sense of humor and just humor me for a minute because I want to read the opening line from your very. I think it's funny Sarah. It's so fun there's so many just it's witty and it's funny but so for people let me just let me just read the opening line from your first entry so it says I'm Michaela. My middle name is Denali like the mountain and the car. I used to sell GUPPIES OUT OF MIDDLE. School locker recycled gatorade bottles. My favorite food is the potato because of its versatility. Such an underrated vegetable that can transform with a little work into mashed potatoes potato salad. French fries chips baked potato potato soup. Hashbrowns Tater tots and Yoki as we simply scratch the surface on this miraculous shape. Shifter that is like beautiful pros and I feel like that was some of the most poignant culinary insight that I've ever gotten so the thing though that I gotta ask you about is the guppies like what you sold guppies Outta gatorade bottles in Middle School Yeah. I bought five guppies from a dairy queen off of craigslist. Back in dairy queen copies I met somebody from craigslist is very clean. Feels like a safe spot. And they put him my tank and they had they replicated tons of babies and so I didn't know what to do with them all so I started A little business selling fifty cents each not taking advantage of everybody but just trying to make some profit of my initial gut the Investors Entrepreneur guppy investor. I loved you make a little bit of money. I hope probably like ten or fifteen dollars. What yeah that's a lot of guppies that you sold the other thing that you play and again like I said there's just some awesome stuff in there but one of the things and Mary and I talk all the time about the crowd support that you guys have gale and one of the things I really love. And when you're blogs yeah was was that when you went to Miami and that there were maybe thirty people in the stands and it was a good reminder to you of how Special Gill is because when you play there every home game not that you ever take it for granted but you get used to it so for those Oregon State fans that are that are listening. What what is it meant to? You means so much stuff that we have that atmosphere plan all the time when we travel on the Road We're reminded of how. Special Gill is Super Thankful for everyone comes to support us in ways. More than basketball. I know a lot of our fans. Come up to us and talk to us about our life interest and how they can help us. with Things off the court so Thank you guys for taking interest as people and supporting us every step along the way through this basketball journey. Hey Mick I know you love to pull pranks or are you still pulling pranks. Are you trying to be a little more serious about life? You know I've matured a little bit I pulled as many pranks during high school But thanks reminder will have to think if my next one coming up shortly was Mary Semi Article. It was nickname was prankster pivot. Which I just absolutely love it just before we let you tell me. Your Best Prank. This was kind of mean but in all the best pranks usually are so. Yeah exactly one of my friends in high school We were scheduled to volunteering thing. And so two r three had committed to it and then the last one bailed last minute and so we're trying think of a way for to get back at her for bailing on us So we talked about this guy That it comes to meet US. And he was very interested in her And so I basically catfish dirt like creating count of this like Nice Guy And I added maybe like a hundred friends. I randomly hurting people that look at a couple of pictures And then started messaging her back and forth like Oh My friend is like me your friends they talked about. You have a lot of common interests. And then I kinda dragged too far by Continue the Messenger over the course of the month and then she would come to me and talking about how great this guy was. Okay needs to end I drag it too far. But after the fact she ended up thinking it was pretty funny. Did she really all did? She was she was. She wasn't heartbroken that this man ever dreams was was. Was you think here the friendship for a week or two but then we're back to normal and she had forgiven me. I'm going to watch my back. Michaela Kim say that and that's my biggest takeaway is that Yeah Michaela. Pittock is perfect but there there is. There was that one time she catfish somebody not perfect. You don't know me enough yet. I love that make. You are awesome. Best of luck this week and I know you guys have have a huge road trip coming up in the state of Arizona so safe travels to the desert and thanks again so much for the time. It's been awesome chatting with you as always having me have a good one. I can't believe that Michaela pivot just told us she catfish someone in high school that. That's that's stuff that you only get on on the inside Pactel. Women's basketball podcast. Mary I'm just glad she's not completely perfect. Hope for the rest of us. What what a student athlete would human being. I'm I just love her. She's amazing now she really is. She's she's so easy to cheer for and I'm excited to see what she's able to do her senior year and certainly beyond as for what is directly in front of Mcpick and this beaver squad. They've got a salty Arizona team coming off that lost. Ucla obviously Friday night. You can see right here on the PAC twelve network at seven o'clock biggest thing for you Mary. To Watch for in Tucson. Well I think in Tucson it's just for both Games Oregon and Oregon State it's This is a team. That's very confident at home and From from the middle of their line up to the top. They've got quality they've improved dramatically and salty is a great word for it. I mean they're not used to losing games anymore and They'RE GONNA be ready to go for for both week for both games this weekend. And it's The desert words at I mean there's Great Games all over the conference but the desert is where it's at I mean Oregon State lost twice to Asu last year. You talk about salty. It's it's GonNa be salty for the bees when when when they play a few and Asu is going to be ready. Well they split last weekend It's just GonNa be a a a No. We're GONNA have both four Zombie. It's a it's going to be a great a great great games to catch. Yeah looking forward to that. The other shout out before we Say Goodbye there was some history made in the bay area this weekend and a player that I you know. I know that you've got a great relationship within that we've loved watching. She could've transferred a couple of times. And she stuck it out. Bobby Buckets Bobby Buckets Maybe under the radar. People don't really appreciate because they don't see her enough but bobby breaking records. Career leader At at Washington state in scoring a year ago had some real health concerns. Twenty pounds on still continued to play wasn't able to really be the player she wanted to be. And One of the highlights of my ear so far was doing the pre game interview with her at at Stanford and just looking at her smile looking at how happy she is and one of the things we love about the the women that we cover is how much they love to play basketball. They don't do it for any reason. Except they get out there and to be with their teammates and the joy of taking jump shots and playing defense and rebounding and competing. And Bobby's right up there from Varna. Bulgaria she'll go whether she pleasant wnba overseas. He's got a bright bright future. She's already graduated taking a couple classes now for eligibility Sake but you know they went over and B- cow. She had a tremendous game as did SONOMA LENA. But Bobby her stove. We call her Bobby Buckets Special Person Special Basketball Player of all time leading scorer took down genealogists record that stood for thirty eight years. And you mentioned that that game that Washington state CAL game. Kate Scott who who called for US said that she got a text from you in the first quarter wondering if stat broadcast. Yeah I thought it was broken. It was fifty two fourteen and I would literally turn my ipad off and turned it back. This cannot possibly be right Sherman Smith in her first year. I mean I could commiserate a little bit my first game of my in the Big Ten. I I lost by forty two Iowa and I remember. We went four corners just to try to limit possession. So maybe we wouldn't lose by fifty but it just You know it was just one of those moments but Sherman's team came back and cut that game to thirteen so don't sleep on the bears as well they'll keep coming at you and to that point and was something because I was talking to kate yesterday and and just asking her about the weekend and she said that the the moment that resonated the most for her obviously other than bobby breaking the record was that after that loss and they got you know they they got handled but by Washington state obviously came back a little bit in the second half but it was a big loss and Sharman Smith got on the MIC afterwards and address the crowd and just said Hey you know thank you for coming. Thank you for being here. We know this isn't the result that you wanted and we're working hard. We're going to get there. Thank you for supporting this team. And she got a standing ovation. Not just from CAL fans but from the Washington state fans who were there as well so it was just a kid described. Just a really awesome moment and I. It's GONNA be Iraqi season likely as she finds her footing. But it feels like this team is all in but look it's going to be rocky for a lot of teams because if you catch Oregon.

"The Freshman Haley Jones has taken a lot of pressure off urges enough to handle the ball as much but the glue. The superglue on that team is Kiana and the way she plays the game and it was her best performance. Were in early January so the better she plays sort of keeping all this together and the great leadership that she shows really impressive against a a U. DUB team. We haven't talked about yet but surprising. Some people are ready to conference wins. That's all they had all of last year the momentum from the The the PAC twelve tournament upset victories over. Utah and then what they did against Oregon State. This is a team that feels like they can beat a lot of people so they were tied at half. Kiana took over in the third. Yeah well and then she also took over the post game. She did. Because I've got to ask you when I saw the clip come out on twitter and I immediately texted you and I said. Can you please explain what's going on here because all of a sudden? I look and it's Kiana Williams leading a group of fans on the court after their win over Washington state in the CUPID SHUFFLE. Which is why I t's that earlier. How did that? Ki- like Gimme the Baxter. Because you were watching it and target on it. She did so. It was a- a group that they have doing dancing that they've put together. I it sort of. I'M NOT GONNA say senior group and it's just a group of fans that just want to participate. The New York Liberty. Have a group that does it in a lot of people are are following suit on this. But they tar SORTA SORTA told can't go on out there and sort of you know participate in all the Stanford players got involved and I was watching Tara and she wasn't really GonNa Start Dancing. And then I saw Anna Wilson kind of lean over and like a dance instructor like we're doing dancing with the stars and she just Kinda got her turned around and got it got her moving in the right direction and all of a sudden tar is doing the cupid shuffle and literally. I'm staring at her. And She just Kinda like shrugs. Her shoulders like why? Not what can I say I mean? The thing went viral. Erica McCall who's overseas starts tweeting about it? Dj's like I didn't know she. Can you know dance that well and so I was going back and forth on text with Tara last night and she just wants everyone to know she was a bit rusty that she doesn't get out to the clubs as much as she used to but she felt good about her effort You know what that that's what we come to the podcast for that Amer. Good stuff a hall of famer a little rusty in the club but Not Shuffle That is awesome. She's having fun this year. She's got four hundred ninety nine. Pac twelve wins by the way. Quick Nugget for you when she reaches five hundred which she'll have a chance to do that one stanford plays cow this weekend She will be the first coach to reach five. Hundred wins in a single conference at the same school. So there's an Asterik there in that gre. Emma has five hundred conference wins. Obviously at Uconn but different as a member of two conferences. So not our fault. They left the big east. That's that's Gino's problems. So congrats Almost to Tara on picking up five hundred of when that is just huge and she's all famer for a reason And obviously still has some serious dance moves all right we. We gotTa Talk About Oregon State. Because we're about to have Michaela PIC- join us in. A in a couple of minutes but real quick. Let's just set the table and talk about the believes one of four undefeated teams remaining in the country along along with Ucla from the pack twelve. They've been to four straight sweet sixteen. They went to the elite eight two years ago. Does this year feel like a year? They break through and get back to the final four and and why or why not. I say yes. There is every indication that they can do it they're a team and a program that embraces the challenge. They don't run from it. Scott ROIC talks openly about it mick. Pivot will as well. I think that's the expectation but what is different about this team and it is a big difference is their post game is vastly improved and it's because of freshmen and it's because freshmen are surrounded with experience. They are missing Takur style. That's a huge loss for them. Versatility how well she defends can knock down threes but this is a a a team. I think destiny. Slocombe playing her best basketball up at Oregon State. And when you have pivot and Elliot Goodman who can shoot with any body in the country and You know tutor. Everyone's favourite is back as well. I see you know. Wouldn't you love to sit at practice and watch those two? Have SHOOT OFF They've got all the ingredients and the Gill crowds will lift. You like a cloud. Sue Wherever you need to go that and I WANNA ask you mentioned you know. They've got some different pieces that they've got two really big time freshmen. Who have started every single game and when I say big time I mean I mean big tall as well Taylor Jones six four. She's the actual freshman of the week for the third time she was. Also I think just named national freshman of the week and then Kennedy Brown six so that you mentioned that you know the new pieces in the post and we know Scott Pruitt. We've talked about it a lot. You and I his ability to groom and teach post players to develop an and reach their potential. We've seen him do it before and it looks like he's got a couple of really really talented young freshman and we know how talented the freshman of Ben over the years at Oregon State but in particular Taylor Jones already three times freshman of the week and the only Oregon state player to ever be named three times? There's a lot left to this season. And so right now when people are talking about national freshman of the year Taylor Jones in the conversation. That's the kind of difference that she is making money. When she shoots the ball like sixty two percent she just solid she rebounds and if you can understand the defensive scheme now you've got you know somebody in that back line that is helping if someone gets to the rim that can create some problems. She's right now. The Missing Ingredient for this team in is really helping the rest. Just really come together. It's The thing about Oregon State and we talked to on a couple different shows about this their ability now to go to Texas and get great players. Texas you know. All the teams that go to Texas Tara has grew McKay's San Antonio's were Kiana Williams from Ucla's GonNa Texas and had success now. Scott Rook going to Texas going to Kansas. Oregon state goes to Kansas and gets one of the best players to come to Oregon State. Think about that for SEC. Big Twelve big ten you. Can You name the program? Nope she wanted to go to Oregon State. This is serious business. They're for real. And this is where it's at this PAC twelve. Were it's at Oregon? State's one of the places where you WANNA be well said well said and you mentioned again. Taylor. She had six blocks against Colorado on Sunday. And Yeah but but she is not the leading rebounder on the team and I think that parleys well into our interview that the straw that stirs the drink for Oregon State is their senior guard. She is leading the pack twelve in rebounding. She's also top aide in the conference in scoring assists in field. Goal Percentage Michaela Pic- our first guest of the podcast. Now Michaela thanks so much for making the time. How's your morning going? Well thank you very much for having me. You just gotTa class yet about ten minutes ago. so Fanta quite fun to sit here. Talk with you guys now. And what class did you just get out of Michaela Make me sound like a nerd but a graduate behavioral neuroscience. That doesn't make you sound like a nerd that just makes you sound way smarter than everyone else that I hang out with. I see in that. Mary really struggled to get better teams. We appreciate you and we're going to talk about The classroom part coming up because we have a ton to get to. I've been really looking forward to conversation and appreciate the time. But let's just start big picture with the fact that the beavers are off to their best start in program history. You guys are fourteen to know for you personally as a senior does. Does this year or this team feel any different to you this for me? I have an extra sense of urgency. 'cause my last year last go round and the PAC twelve and Last season for me in our class so We're trying to make the most of it and helping my teammates. Young one because the freshman as well as the veterans have been helping them learn what I've learned the past few years and pass classes. I about to play with you. Mentioned the urgency and you had almost a triple double on Sunday against Colorado Sixteen points fifteen rebounds and eight assists but the the stat that really jumps out as those fifteen rebounds you lead the League in rebounding and you're a guard how I think part of it is our defensive positioning as a team. We pride ourselves on making takes up socks over us and so we have dependent positioning that way. I think also I'm relentless in my pursuit of the basketball I have high motoring. I liked take plays off so if I can get expeditions. My team here. I know they'll help a better chance of winning. Scientists go after it every time I can make I know in that Colorado game you played forty minutes and from an announcer standpoint. We always make a big deal about that. Like oh micatin tires. You need a blow. Do you get tired. Is that a real thing or is that just not a factor for you? I do get tired but I think are facing eviction coach Jeff and such a good job especially in that precede making making those conditioning drills Painful for US office in the long run So that that preseason work is there for a reason us for games where we have to fold out fourth quarter or ethnic lake. Sediments be ready for that. I don't know how much twitter but have you followed Rebecca Lobo te sort of bringing attention to your rebounding numbers. I saw A tree that Oregon State basketball has put. Al is pretty cool to highlight that. I have to tell you a funny story so I was doing your game last year and I said on the air and the Cayla pick at six two and she I know everywhere and shuts looks at me and like starts doing her theatrics and pointing to the roster like she. She's only five ten. You know so. Many players come into college in their assigned a position. That hasn't really been your journey. Has It you? Don't define yourself by a position? No I played my favorite therapy Share positions one through four luckily haven't placed the five yet And hopefully they don't but I've been trying to do whatever bought the TV's Phil whether that's the point guard my sophomore year whether that's abby more defensive-minded and My freshman year Is trying to do whatever the team needs me to do? And trying to fill. Whatever role is available? Mary and I were just talking about some of the newcomers on squad specifically tailored Jones and Kennedy Brown. So tell me what. It's been like a incorporating the freshman because there's obviously always you remember it. There's a learning curve coming in and playing D. One BASKETBALL FROM HIGH SCHOOL. No matter how good you are and how many state championships you one in highschool ex exactly I've loved Getting to try to mentor. These freshmen lungs are other veterans and Senior Class. In trying to help them learn as quick as possible but when I saw them Working this fall and the summer I described him as bold and they came in wanting to work one. Eighty two extra rep's wait and see how they get better every day and they had this mentality that they had to get better and I worked to help us right away So I I saw that in the fall and we you guys able to see it at the start of our season Kennedy bound into Jones have have an edge to them and their superfund of play with their competitors. And they're they're talented and just sort of part of what got you into this season playing so well was that experience with the Pan Am team. We talked about it at me day. But what was it like to go to that tryout then make the team and then do as well as you did and just lastly to wear a Jersey with USA on. It was an amazing experience Last May when the tryouts were held And I was the first time I'd done anything. Usa Basketball Related. I try out to me like I had been invited to. Usa Tryouts once in high school..

"Off. Right Mary. Murphy Ashley Adamson With You and I'm fired up to be back. I'm sad in a little bit away though that this is not a visual medium because the way that you were feeling that Intro Song Mary just now is something that I'm a little bit bomb. That other people at home are going to be able to see. Well I've got wrapped deep in my soul. That was very clear. That's what can I say the calm before the chaos that could be my middle name. That's right So if you're listening to the PODCAST FOR THE FIRST TIME. This is the first time what's wrong with you. Say Hello and welcome but also what the what the heck were you doing last winter And I'm glad you're here. I promise not to disappoint and already twenty twenty. It's going to be a better year for you twenty nineteen. I think. That's an obvious if you found this podcast in didn't listen to US last year to those who supported in less than last season love you and are back again. We love you. Thank you You're literally the reason that we are sitting here on a Tuesday afternoon doing this because this was all a big experiment last year the podcast and the resounding feedback to no one's surprise was that yeah. There are a ton of rabid women's basketball fans who want more coverage and in story so in the stories the teams individuals the coaches. What's going on the dynamics? There's so many stories to tell so. Many amazing student athletes It just makes me get calm and chaotic in my brain I love that and speaking of as athletes. We start with someone on our first guest. Today is the epitome of a student athlete. And I think Mary the easiest way for me and I was trying to figure out a way to like how do you encapsulate what Michaela pick? The Oregon State senior is all about and to me. It's like I want my daughter to grow up to be Mikhail Pelvic. That's the easiest way I can say of. Cora does that it. It'll be amazing but the student athletes and then I'm GONNA go slash human being if we can all aspire to be what she does and what. She spends her free time doing helping others in so many different than us of her life and her community. She's she's just a real inspiration. We're excited to talk to her. Yeah she's GonNa join us in about fifteen minutes and I guarantee even if you're a duck fan that by the end of this just give this interview a chance and I think by the end you'll you'll at least if you're not a full on faneuil of a soft spot for number zero in Corvallis moving forward we gotta a Divan because there's a ton to get to. Obviously this is the first part of the season and there's a ton that has happened. Since you and I were last together it would be completely impossible for us to get caught up on everything this season. But we're GonNa hit the big stories a couple of under the radar stories Including cupid shuffle. Which I'm really excited to hear about that. Some insight behind that we know for a lot of people. This is the first time that they're really starting to pay attention to college. Hoops not not everybody but for a lot of people holidays are over. Football SEASON IS OVER AND CONFERENCE. Play started so now is kind of when we're diving into the nitty gritty of it. So for those people Mary in particular who are just diving back into college basketball for you. What was the biggest story of NON CONFERENCE PLAY IN PAC? Twelve women's basketball. I think it has to be organs upset of team. Usa It happened on the ninth of November. Ninety three eighty six and only the second loss ever by Team USA to a college team. The last one was in nineteen ninety. Nine what were you doing in ninety nine against Tennessee And having called that game with an shots up at the mat it was a remarkable experience to watch to call and just to be a part of it it still. I can't really actually believe that. They pulled it off because I think when I was. I was in studio that day when they were playing. And we're watching. I'm like man. They're hanging tough. And Wow and you know Stanford at Oregon State had looked good in moments against them but all of a sudden you're watching Oregon. You're like they're they're gonNA beat team. Usa when you were calling at like at what point did you realize that was going to happen in the reality of it. Well there are a couple of minutes left and you felt it was going to happen Usa made a little bit of a rush. They just Iran and they just couldn't quite get over the Hump and then Sabrina sought to was just amazing and Ruthie was Ruthie and the combination as we know when they're on top of their game they're almost impossible to be and I'll throw the second piece at. Ya and we're definitely Oregon heavy at this point. The crowds you know in Eugene have been off the charts non-conference conference they played Corbin. You know right. Before in an exhibition game had ninety eight hundred people in the building in a game. That was a complete blow out this past weekend. Ten FIVE FOR COLORADO UTAH. It is almost a sell out for Stanford which will be in a couple of weeks and then the Oregon or stay at both venues completely sold out. I mean it is on. It is now it is happening in the state of Oregon in. It is just amazing. I mean it's not a better time to be a women's basketball fan on State Oregon. It is right now. Sabrina truly is and tell me if I'm wrong because obviously we're close to it but she's the face of college basketball and I'm not talking about just on the women's side I'm talking about women and men and the way her decision to come back and play her senior year and the unfinished business mantra What has it been like for you because you've had obviously a few of her games this year and a few organs games. What have you seen from her? There's just no there's no room. There's no wasted motion. There's not there's no time to talk it's about doing and I talked to at least Woodward who was On the games this weekend in Eugene and she just said the way that Sabrina and Ruthie came out it was like whatever verbs you would like to. Don't mess with US First. Quarter I tip. It's it's on and that's what unfinished business means. You didn't come back to just play around and play Patty cake. You came out to win if you can roll. You'RE GONNA roll people but you're going to get out there and compete for a national title. And that's the way they have started. Pac twelve play and it's They head to the desert next. But this is a team that everyone's got their eyeballs on. They've lost one game. I think that helped them. Sort of you know. Kind of get refocused. And that's what's going to happen but I just she's the best player in the country. Everyone knows her by her first name. So that's kind of special Ed and it's just exciting to watch. Just go out and it's a privilege isn't it to see the best player You know on one of the best teams in the country and you can watch that it's not the WNBA. It's right here. If you go see Sabrina and you can go see Oregon. Play like go. Buy A ticket and sit in the stands and and enjoy it. Be a part of it because it. It's fun now. It is. I think so much of life right is about timing and the fact that for whatever reason all of the things collided in that we're able to cover her in this moment in this year and that team it's special so obviously the League is stacked again and I feel like we say that every year but but truly this year there are you know four legitimate final four contenders for the top teams in the AP. Poll right now from the pack twelve obviously Oregon Oregon State Stanford and Ucla Arizona's eighteenth and Asu is receiving votes. So we've got one full weekend actual plan the books you were at Stanford Call both of their wins over Washington state and you will get to that in a minute but the marquee match release from this weekend was Sunday. Ucla and Arizona both teams coming in thirteen. Both off to their best starts in program history. It was tied at the half and then the Bruins came out and had a huge third quarter just looked like a almost like a different team and pulled away to win by twelve for you. What what was your biggest takeaway from that game? Just the ability. If you play Arizona. We all know. Area McDonald is one of the great players in the country. She's not flying under the radar anymore. Everybody knows you've got to slow down and the freshman guard out of winward. High-school Charisma Osborne that her job was. You need to guard this all American. This player of the year candidate and slow her down and in the end Mcdonald thousand of that. Ballgame Am I am I right on that? One I think and I know that I think I got the wrong game. I think that was it. That was the Asu Game. But just you've got to make her work harder. You've got to make every dribble every drive. Make it a challenge and this is a UCLA team that. I don't know if people knew they were for real. I think they're going to be okay but in talking to Corey yesterday. She just said every day. It's a new hero. Everyone's just waiting for the chance to step up and maybe a little bit of surprise that they've come so far but their defense the way they can change things up. Different people can score their veteran leadership of course to pristine with with what she's doing. So this is a team that you know we focus so much on the Oregon schools in Stanford but UCLA is just out there looming as a real good title contender. Yeah there's no doubt about it and I was talking to Anderson who called the game for us and she said that her biggest takeaway was that. Ucla looks like the complete team. Now and Corey close. You know apparently was they weren't really shooting that well from the outside and then their last three games. That's that's been different. So if they get that going and then again Chrismas. Born lookit freshman. She's only going to get better as the as the year progresses. It's early January and you can't talk about ucla without Michaela Michaela onion. We're not wearing out. See a different way. Thank you kate. Scott for getting to the to the heart of that one but the double double machine. Just what the different positions that she can play and how every game every practice. She improves and just wonder where she going to be when this when she's done because she just does things in each she just leaves you like. Wow that special. Yeah now it's It's GonNa mentioning to see what is able to put together by the end of the year in Westwood. All right. There's another special team special freshman. And it's one that you've gotten to know real well obviously Stanford called both of their games this past week and I know you've had them a bunch being in the bay area. The freshman we so much about them on media Dan coming into the season and just the highest ranked recruiting class. And all the rest. What's been your biggest takeaway as you've watched friendly and Jones in this young new group. Kind of come in along with some veteran pieces that Tara has well. I think what has surprised me about Stanford is playing for so much of the season without Dj Carrington who is on every watchlist. There is in the country without the inside. Presence of my Datsun. Six three all that experience. She's got the foot problem. You take those two veterans out and this team is still in the top five. It's it's remarkable you know Sitting calling games with Kate Scott or with Chris blog in your three freshmen are on the floor to freshmen are on the floor. With with soft more Alexi halls plan a lot lacey halls coming back and sort of the glue that that's keeping a lot of this together of course. Scana Williams and she was absolutely at her best on Sunday whether they went manner zone her ability to find creases get open in the way she gets to the Rim and just helps organize things and there's no doubt that.
