"Never count out the scar tissue from last year from winning the PGA last year. Exactly. Yeah and almost letting it slip away you can't. This are you making fun of me because this is my said last year I. was like that is no. Trevor Okay. Good. He needs. Me For that like that didn't look right. Face? Exactly. Yeah. I think it's Funnier when you package it is like, Oh, him winning that major last year that I really shook. Yeah. I actually legitimately believe okay. It was dustin that ran ran down and the whole crowd is rooting for Duston as he's going and that was not a comfy not comfy win as one one cents which makes you the math like. I thought the questions that they asked him after the row where weak shit to. Be Even asking him quite a PGA official. Hopefully, there'll be some good nuggets in some of the game stories just license people up on instagram. That's kind of like. Yeah I needed at least note that he turned down media after the round from the broadcast. If he did otherwise, they didn't ask him. Maybe they did either tell us he didn't do it or tell us. He didn't ask him for a comment he was literally. Like, going to win three PG as in a row. Fully. Manzke. It should have been an absolute like the story. It's. So we said on the pot a couple of times throughout the week but like. Kinda have been the only story it's crazy. Yeah and coming into into today I mean what would you how many people Outta ten? Do you think picked? Brooks to win day. Of One. To win today. So we say coming into the week like not even one no I I just mean looking at the leaderboard today. Oh well, of course, like Brooks is going to run everybody down and the I mean it was just over before started. The only majors brooks hasn't won in the last four years are the ones like mid tournament I've switched all brooks. He's got this and he never wins at any time ever say that. going. Back. Funny Note on Day. Benadryl if we did something. This car. Screeching his ex with. On. Thirteen. T.. Could've been a CVS was so far behind that. Like meals jungle vers like something's going the the happy Gilmore Jackass Guy Practically home for it. He was bucket is headed evill. was disappointing. Just. One last nail in the coffin for Kapka. Guys. Roy's comments after around today like saying. Pity. Confused by Yeah I wouldn't. I wouldn't say that about somebody has like three times as many wins as you do disrespect somebody Dj. So what did Brook's actually say? This this look at the board. He's like, yeah a lot of guys up there. They haven't really won one ISD jazz one but yeah, I. Like my chances when I've had a chance to be in in this spot, I'm paraphrasing this of course when I've had a chance to be in this spot got done I wonder I actually the last couple of times you haven't won in to like I don't know that was just a little little aggressive and dismissive of DJ where does rory fit into? This is on the heels of of of him saying before the week that like him and DJ alright was now is like a media fabrication. Rory said something along the lines of I you know I. I'm not sure where he's going with that I would I'd be careful being disrespectful to somebody that has three times as many wins as you do. Which also Roy was just jumping in on deejays behalf. Yes gotcha I don't WanNa poke holes in this but I do remember doing a video for scratch when I was working at the PGA tour and we're doing this. Sorry just finish the quote If he's trying to play mind games, he's trying to do the wrong person. I don't think they really gives much of a concern to that. But just but just different I, try to respect everyone out here. Everyone's a great player if you WANNA major championship. Your hell the player doesn't mean you you've only won you've won one you've had a lot to do. You had a lot to do a lot of good things reads weird I mean it's Sorta hard to knock a guy who's got twenty one wins on the PGA tour, which is three times what Brooks has. So. Scratch thing I just remember doing a video with Brooks I'm sure this is out there somewhere. But where we lit ask who's your best friend on the PGA tour and he said Dustin Johnson. For what it's worth that was like granted that was four years ago but brooks talk out of both sides of his mouth no way. I'm just saying I. Don't know that it was totally the fake news media that that ran with that one but. Reindeer going somewhere Well he also said I, guess kept said last fall about Rory I've been out here for what five years. Roy hasn't won a major since I've been on the PGA tour so I don't view it as a rivalry. Forgot about that first of all this as not. Wrong. And it is sick and Roy was asked specifically about the DJ stuff but. I. Don't know it seems to me like it could've just been like that's between them. So I don't want to speak out of our mouth either because I feel like we do Rudan these guys to like. Say What's on your mind I'd say we'll tell you I think you know go for it take some shots. I applaud him at least a little bit for saying you're welcome it and we're welcome to comment you. That's bullshit. Part about not now really hearing. Dish after the round. On on this stuff that was brought up prior yeah. He's a he's trying. He is actively trying to give us content. Yeah and so that's where I'm like come on. He's got interviewed after the round but.

It just hit my eye. You know, we're just hoping for a really good balance and We got it hid it really good pot, and now we're here about that. He has a sensational chip on 14. How could it get better than that? Your eagle. 15. Uh, 16. Excuse me, I would. I would like to see that at majors more often, too. You have like a par four. That you could drive That would be neat. Berkeley. So I mean you thought that he had momentum going into it because he's played so out especially since being on our podcast. and. You just had. He was just that it's like all right. If you're making your best, it's surprising. He was three thousand plus three thousand going into the week because when you look at them, you had the momentum he's playing a fire and and he and the guy's got stones has got absolute stones to be able to rip that driver onto. To on sixteen absolute fucking huge tested he also since coming on our show, Oh he lost a playoff where he missed a three-foot or on the second playoff hole e then one by taking down Justin Thomas in one of the better finishes of the year, and then a couple of weeks later he wins is first major championship that sense coming up so. We've tried to push this narrative by the way that we are light gray lock in that there's a four blade podcast wherever fucking want to call it but I think would actually has nothing here because he came on restarted the door and he's just lights out. So more of our we talked to them wins the next Jay Championship Victor Hovel in Matthew Wolf better get in line, but again on. The show 'cause we talked to Brooks Koepka prior to the PGA and he won the PG Ed Current, we talked to Kala, somewhat prior to the PGA anyone the jet. So let's I mean whoever's in that time slot for next year like that week before the PGA Championship, we should sell that thing for hundreds of thousands of dollars, curtis whoever's on that has the best chance to win the championship. Wow. This some whoever has.

"A stacked leaderboard in some of the biggest names in the sport with a pair of all time shots on the back nine twenty-three-year-old Colin Morikawa pulled off a real stunner on Sunday shooting a six under sixty four in the final round of the TPC harding park. To Win, the, twenty twenty PGA championship. I'll tell you what it was riveting. The kid went to the University of California. But to see how cool he was down the stretch particularly those last three holes finish the tournament thirteen under par to capture his first major of his career in just his second opportunity. So congratulations to him, we're GONNA be talking football just a second. You know the name Walter Jones offensive tackle who played his entire thirteen seasons in the NFL with the Seattle seahawks was elected to the hall of. Fame in his first year of eligibility and the seahawks have retired his number number seventy one. "Okay more our we got more to get to on him So you know this back-nine, like we said, there's a a thousand guys tied at ten hundred are in big names and big hitters and guys that are playing well, feed out started making pots. He looked like he could win bryson on the. Front started birdie-birdie-eagle he stole it a little bit but was still. There, they were just a ton of names more cowo- ships in on fourteen makes a nice on fifteen. Actually had a pretty good early look and then steps up on sixteen. Now, there's a lot of comparisons being made to the fourteenth tee shot at the Workday, which is the memorial when I think it was like three eleven something around that yardage new steps up with the driver jt had laid up on the people were laying up. He steps over the driver, hits it to like fifteen feet, and like he was GonNa win the tournament air ended up having to go the distance with jt came out the winner of that after they both made back back bombs but it. was clearly in his bag it was in his arsenal that column more power. So goddamn cocky and confident with his driver that you can say, say there's three hundred yards there's trouble up there. You can't really miss certain spots that he's GonNa step up thread the needle at that fucking thing more accurately than we've ever hit wedges and our lives don't here he comes to the sixteen t at the PGA championship with his first major is looking to become I believe the third youngest person in golf history. To Win the PGA Championship he's in a League now Orient Jack Nicklaus booted targeted windchill to nine. After by the way he decided like changes entire strings by took couple of years. He Steps Up Sixteen Two hundred ninety four yards and hits a fucking driver to seven feet and makes Eagle after having a one-stroke lead from chipping in that is going to be a tee shot that will be replayed. It reminds me remember the brand was on this show a year ago trying to claim that that Dustin Johnson tee shot at this talking ceremony Neil Champions Dolphins. Johnson in the fucking background event in Hawaii was the greatest shot in the history call this my man. This, my man has significantly more merit than that because he with everyone with a bunch of big names over the fucking map at. Harding, park the fogs all over the place the wind starting to pick up he steps up and hit a driver from two ninety, four to seven feet. That's possible. Right Yeah I've seen a lot of comparisons between that like you said, rigs a and the fourteen full workday. The small detail small difference between those things is one was the workday and the other was the PGA championship where there will one thousand people at ten under a pretty and maybe Casey at that point where eleven under. But he's got a tidal wave of guys behind him who are ready to win a major and he's still decides the. Poll driver input it to seven feet like that's shot that I don't even think I've wrapped my brain around yet if the tournament just finished off but like ask me a week from now on, I still don't think my brain can wrap itself around it because that is such a ridiculous shot and take such big balls. So for more cowed, do that like it just solidifies his star in the making your now he's just a star, the PGA tour..

I've been looking into the wagering on that stuff aero islands that did not know they had pro soccer. That's the coolest place I've ever been. I'M GONNA, try to get glories for shot cystic. Let's with that. Okay. That wraps up the preview for glories I shot now here's Curtis strange. So you're you're in a Gulf mood you say you're ready to roll. We'll have been sitting around fishing a lot here not going out at all for obvious reasons and. So now I get to call from Gos- and A we've all been waiting for CBS had this long stretch and I think what's Pj the tenth or Eleventh Week and since I'm not walking reporter for another network anymore. This is the first golf I get to call and I'm looking forward to it very much was this always the plan I get for you to be working OBA CBS and espn this week even before the the Fox us open and US J. Deal went away. Yeah. I still I still did work for ESPN. The masters. Now, the PGA all along Fox allowed me to that or I should say espn allowed me to Work Fox and then I worked three events for Fox which is a great. It was fantastic for me but I don't know if it's because to cable networks. Versus. To networks major networks, I don't know how all the politics happened between all that. But the ESPN allowed me to go negotiate with Fox when we lost the open championship. With that was. Well, what's IT GONNA be like calling Gulf from home I, mean, how are you able to to lock the door completely and what the test setup Ben like for that process, you know Christmas really going to be interesting they set up my little home studio last week and it's it's quite simple but it it worked I have I'm GonNa have my computer and my ipad to Saad for information and leaderboard and research type of thing but have a, I, have a little laptop here on my desk, which will be program. It'll be what I'm calling off off our. And I have set up a little Tripod, which is basically a an ipad camera and have a light and I have my box for all my voice back and producer and whatever mix, and so it's it's quite simple and you know I I will say this I've listened to not a lot of golf over the last eight or nine weeks with CBS but listen to enough where I can't tell the difference honestly with Nick Faldo Ian Baker finch in Frank knoblauch being. Not In studio at the site. But in Orlando calling remotely I don't think missed a beat and there might be a little. Little bit of gymnasts not build at nudge nick when he wants to break in or Nick Nudge Gymnast Not Wanted To br you know wanting to break in that type of thing, but they have been just as smooth as Silken and I hope this is the same way but I'm sure it'll be a a little bit of getting used to. Yeah. That's why I was just I was GonNa ask if you thought there was any you may have better insight to it after the weeks over. But if you thought this was kind of future of golf broadcasting for cost cutting measures and whatnot is it possible to do this remotely? You know I think A couple of interesting ideas or conversations I've had I you know my twin brothers in business and so he hasn't gone in the office in foot four or five months, and he says for a while he enjoyed it because they actually got a lot of worked on. Being at home but now After, some months he misses not going to the office because that's where you socialize with your colleagues. You interact with different new ideas what work white might not which won't really happen when you're remotely working from home. From that standpoint part of the big reasons I love doing TV is the team. In the atmosphere in the compound talking ideas helping each other out and just being part of the team. It's a wonderful atmosphere and then finally at the end of the day, hopefully, putting on a product that everybody is really proud of. We can do somewhat the same thing, but it's remotely see get all interaction socially like you would before. So that's GonNa be the big difference there. We'll see how it goes, but it certainly going to be it'll be less of a team atmosphere than it was. Yeah and the coverage is extensive. I just got done reading the press release and I couldn't even keep track of how many how many hours where it's gotta be. It's it looks it looks very extensive, but I wanted to. We're we're going to pick your brain here on the current setup and the favorites and what you like and whatnot. But as a player well I guess I like the PGA. Championship is kind of going through a bit of an identity changed just with the different spots on the calendar I think as a golf fan at least I kind of just view it a little differently I feel like I'm even more confused about what its identity is. But let's go back to you as a player competing in the PGA Championship. How did you view like what this championship meant and has that changed at all over the years since you're since you're no longer playing. You know. It has changed for two or three different reasons when I was playing. I played well in the PGA Championship I. Think only twice I had a chance to win one and I think it was. Eighty nine and I hate to say this because as much respect for half of the PG of America and in what they do for the Ryder Cup and PJ professionals around the country. But when I got to August I was tired. In plan and. I think that's part of the reason I didn't play on the PGA I was beat up from the previous six months and played a lot of golf and. You know I just didn't play as well. That's my excuse isn't reality I really don't know but I went in there ready to go. I like to golf courses is always hot as hell everywhere..

There's if there's a crowd there and they gotta wait two minutes for everyone to calm down and then he has to go into his routine no shot. But because there was no crowd, there wasn't a boom of explosion of a roar and then a sustained one that lasted for forty five seconds or whatever shuffling around I mean every everything and then you know the caddy saying guys quiet. Quiet down but college taken his mind and not quite down yet the not. So now he's still hears the roar in his head. I mean there's so many things. That's going on as you're going I. Mean you block most of that stuff out but still it's it is there and you can. The other thing that is very true. And I haven't been out yet but this is what other people who have been to events has told me as well. Because I know when I'm at an event and there's people you can feel when energy changes that's right. You can feel that there is truly intellectuality and until until you feel it both ways, it's easy to dismiss them be like come on man get out of here. You can feel it. No, you actually really can't. So I'm. Anxious to see what this feels like without fans but then. I'm also looking at this to in and this is me being selfish if enough, I'm being honest. This is one of the reasons I fought so hard to go out to cover this. Is because without fans out there. Then I feel like I get to be the most ultimate fan that there is. Yeah that I get to do exactly what our mantra is and that is take people where they can't go. Are you allowed on the course during the tournament? Yes, you are. Yes. Okay. Yeah. I don't know if I'm GONNA, GONNA inside the ropes but like would I gotta be inside the ropes for there's no one. Even short as I am yeah you know who's blocking my view no one. You almost get in some of those that are allowed there. The almost get a private major champion is yesterday. Yes. That's that's exactly right. So I, get to I get to than. And feel like this is my job. My job is to whether it's on social media or when I'm doing sportscenter hits like any time that I'm talking. To other fans that are at home, my job is to give them the energy and the experience that they can't have. And I take that very seriously as much fun as I'm going to have and as energetic is crazy, I'm going to be like that for me is that's my Gig, my gigs. This week is I in love this game as much as so many other fans know and love this game and the fact that they're not getting to go like I. GotTa be them for them out, and that's what I WANNA do I wanna give all that kind of information, but I also Wanna I wanna be able to say here's why this is exciting and this is why this matters and this is why I have so much weight on what just happened because this is a major so it's our job as as. ESPN employees to kind of go. You know what? This is not a regular tournament. So we AIN'T GONNA act like it's a regular tournament. WHO Has the WHO do you like a new you're gonNA ask me that this week I have..
What will be in the next stimulus bill?
"Get right into it. I, want to ask about the economic outlook to get numbers this morning on detail sale showing up pretty nice rebound in June. But then on the other hand, you have seventeen million Americans a still touring to unemployment insurance. And that you couple it with the epidemiological numbers I. Guess I'm just wondering, do you still see the baseline as a recovery in the second half of this year as I? Think you said back can. You highlighted a bunch of cross-currents it were trying to analyze and understand, and of course, the just an enormous amount of uncertainty and the uncertainty really stems directly with the you know the corona virus in the end pandemic and and how that behaves and and how effective and successful the efforts to contain it at the same time to bring the economy. Back up to full speed. So right now, the way I'm reading is still consistent with you know how you described and I've been talking about it. I, expect the second half to be a continued a period of economic recovery. But it's still you know we're in a very deep hole unemployment is over eleven percent. We have a long ways to go to get back to full strength My hope is is though that will continue to see positive signs of a gradual recovery over the second half. Half of this year into next year. But right now, this is camp critical inflection point. We're seeing these mixed signals in different states where the states where the case The number of new cases has been rising or definitely seen people back from going to restaurants, and in other things, wound states like where I am in New York around here, we are still seeing steady improvement in terms of people getting back to work and going out to restaurants and things like that. So it's IT'S A. Complicated situation and were watching all that you know high frequency data very closely to see what's going on. So, something that was interesting from the Beige Book, that was just released yesterday that in New York. This was the case in many other districts as well. Are there were stories of furloughed workers that have now been laid off permanently and I guess I'm wondering what you're seeing specifically in the second district covers New York Arts of new, Jersey Connecticut of Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands. What are you seeing there? You mentioned also earlier this morning that you think it's going to essential for fiscal authorities. Quote, put cash directly in the hands of Americans based off of what you're seeing the district. What would that look like is that an extension of Ui maybe more picky P, for example. Yes. So what we are seeing and what I'm hearing is definitely that this obviously is a situation where a lot of employers don't have demand for their products and services whether you're restaurants or other. You know businesses They are having to to lay off workers despite their efforts, and despite the PGA and other programs have been there to provide a support of businesses and obviously to the unemployed. And households more generally. So I, I would take to kind of signals from what we're seeing is obviously, this is going to be a longer more drawn out period of getting through the pandemic I. think that you know work businesses are struggling because they don't have revenue state local governments are struggling because they don't have a tax revenue or other sources of revenue right now, and I do think an important lesson of the past few months, the federal actions and I really don't think of this is stimulus that really think of these actions to to help support Basically, grants and transfers to households and businesses has been absolutely critically important it's meant the people who've lost their jobs have been able to continue to pay the ramp of food on the table. It's also the pre program which you know is obviously had his challenges has been I've heard this from businesses or district has been effective and getting money to the small businesses. So they can keep going and hopefully come back. So my lesson from this disease have been effective tools. I'm not saying what Congress should or shouldn't do specifically, but this has been effective at dealing with the situation through July and I think you know are there are lessons to draw from bad in terms of? Guinness. The next six months. In, the meantime, the Federal Reserve has pin interest rates near zero. But I want to chat something fun. Now, forward, guidance right and I know that you can only speak for yourself. But what's your preferred method of messaging to the market? How long you will keep rates at zero bound especially now that there's been this discussion as the minutes of noted of federal. Reserve officials be playing around with the idea of an objective base or guidance that perhaps might be pinned to inflation, for example. Well as you know over the recovery period and the expansion following the global financial crisis, we did use for guidance pretty aggressively and I think very successfully starting in two thousand eleven. We did try different versions of. What we call, you know database versus you know contingent. Guidance and I think what the lessons from that is, you know win market expectations for the public understanding of what the Fed's likely to do gets out of sync with our own thinking for guidance has has proven to be helpful to help people understand how reviewing Monte policy. You know right now I actually think that are are the guidance we have in there, which is maybe more kind of descriptive informal or guidance his serving as well. So we do have some time to think about how we should. Should evolve that guidance is going as we go forward to me. The critical thing is, what's the problem we're trying to solve right now, we're still trying to fit you know all of us were trying to figure out where is the economy going today? Where is it likely to go in and learn from the experience of you over the next few months, and from that position, we can really I think considering and decide what's the best way to describe our thinking around the future path of a Monte policy. And, link that obviously. To our. Objectives of cheating the maximum employment and price stability goals. Now on inflation something. That's interesting that we're hearing from other Fed officials is where do you shoot the target as we know is two percent for the reserve. But what we've seen over the past recovery since is that that has been undershot on, which is hard to kind of stimulate inflation. How does that guide your thinking for

Broadcasters potential traditional networks now Allie, the stand what he's is, and no, it's. It's a replacement for sports. that as I mentioned I think last time Jesus Alabama's back in the bottle, but also they're. They're now really sort of waking up the fact that man. We need younger audiences here we are is fifty year old. baseball demographic isn't going to is isn't going to. Be around forever. They know how to do engage millions of people, and and with with the right formula with right approach. They have ever shot at this, but but thus far as we all know. This is all playing onstream in online and not -sarily other. You know we were just reflecting yesterday in this conversation about Turner. Journal riots early Turner had it right early with their first league in for car strike, and and not only do they have right, but the brands that they brought in to support it. They also had right, and that was that was four years ago. I was a long time ago. And and in the scheme of things yet they made some of their forays into in a broadcast use for in in bringing predictability around the broadcast that that's still Jack. Jamie stands up is one of the other great moments in in. In sort of democratization of of sports so so. I think I I don't think it's over for traditional media, I think. There's plenty of opportunity especially, as as now more organization comes to sports. It is getting more predictable. There are more path as two point eight to point B., or for players for events for mountain and the notion of broadcasts. Predictable broadcast is scheduled broadcasts that we all we all know. You know even if you're not. Austrailia I think you're pretty much. Know that NFL owned Sundays. At. One PM Eastern time and four PM time at eight eight thirty eastern time on Sunday. That's a sport doesn't have it, so I do think this is. Predictability. What what scheduling and programming can do for his or these? A conversation with Golfer Joseph Bramlett
"To get that experience anyways, but it's. It's always funny to be. We. We kinda over this I. Forget if you mentioned this, but you were at the time I don't know if there's still the case, but you. The youngest qualifier for the AM ever at age fourteen I was yeah, it was Yeah, that was that was awesome, and that was kind of part of the reason. My Dad kind of pushed me towards amador golf after that point to try to play with guys that were bigger, better, stronger, smarter Um the end when. I was fourteen years old and I went through thirty six qualifier ironically I had just lost in the qualifier and a playoff for the US junior amateur three weeks before, and then I play the US. Amador qualifier and got myself in a playoff and was able to somehow. It a wedge into a five Verdy the playoff and make its Oakland hills for the US am and it was It was unbelievable. I mean I was fourteen. No idea what I was doing what it meant, but it was really really cool. Yeah, I was the youngest ever well. This is a question that I never know how to word I guess, but what I'm trying to get at, and I know there's there's been a lot of ups and downs from injuries in your career, but I always want to know from guys that have kind of lived in that bubble between you bouncing back between the Korn ferry tour. As to what how you view, what separates you from? The example I always go to his Kevin Kisner who is perennially on has his card very safely does does very well doesn't bomb it, but just has a very i. don't want to say normal game, but a more relatable game to a lot of people in your mind. What is what's the difference between you and Kevin Kisner? What are you have to do to get to his level of consistency? It's honestly it's interesting. You bring up Kevin Kisner, because kids actually had a period of time that he bounce back and forth from the PGA tour the Korn Ferry tour back. I think he went back to the Korn ferry twice very early in his career out of college and He had a tough time. He almost thought about giving up the game. I read one time, so kids has got to a point in his career where he's figured. Figured out what it takes to succeed for himself to succeed on the PGA tour I really think the difference between me and him is simply experience I've actually played against him quite a bit growing up. We face each other in the US. AM In two thousand four. When he was in college, I was sixteen, and he beat me on the first playoff hole and I mean. I've I've played quite a bit against him and he's a great player. He's you know. parentally keeps his car now he's. He's in a great place in his career, but he went through those growing pains as well I think for myself. My career kind of got put on hold for about five years, and so my learning curve got a little messed up in there, and I think that having gone through the Korn Ferry tour now and got my car back. I've learned a lot. Lot about what I need to do. well to succeed again week out and That's where a lot of conversations about putting with math has come up because that's one of the areas of my game that I can get more consistent and stronger at from a ball striking perspective. I think I'm in a pretty good place. wedge game has gotten much more consistent in the last year and a half and I think from a mental. Perspective I think there's something to be said for getting comfortable out here and and ceiling like you can compete with these guys, even when you're game is not sure. My rookie year when I played on the PGA tour, I thought every aspect of my game had to be firing perfectly for me to have a chance to succeed and I've had several events this year. That I've had pretty good finishes and look back on how I played. I'm like man. I really wasn't that sharp this week. but I. I'm starting to figure out kind of how to peace tournaments together again and I think that's. That's where kids has gotten, too. I mean he's a great ball striker and I certainly am not taking anything away from what he does. He's a great offer, but I think the he is so consistent at where he's at now because he's gotten through those growing pains, he's gotten to a point where he knows exactly what it takes for him to play well, and he does that and he kissed on worry about anything else
Rob Garnet One More Wave
"Welcome back to the coastal. Athlete. Program I'm your host. Shep today. We are joined by very special guests. We are joined by the record surf operations a US Navy veteran. Therapy advocate, a waterman, a good friend of Joe and be good friend of mine, because we're all part of the one more way, family, Ladies and Gentlemen, please welcome to the show Rob Garnett Rob. How're you doing? Then fantastic thanks for having me am. Champ and Danny Danny met you before but SHEP. We've talked a couple of times on the phone, so it's cool to be some of the zoom. At least on Zoom. Danny is our producer, and so he's going to be helping out doing the editing and mixing the episode down and things like that Joe is going to be joining the podcast just a minute. He was transitioning from from pork. Chop actually up to his apartment. He's coming back doing some surf therapy sessions. My guess would be out of Pendleton or something like that. As usual on Wednesdays, Joe is on the road living the mission so rob. Before. We get too deep into asking you. Questions I just have to ask when it came time to transition out of your career in the military, did you? When did you know that you wanted to get into surf therapies specifically? And when did you know that like this was going to be a special moment? I. Think when I was so I retired from the navy and two thousand fifteen and so that was kind of win Wave, actually becoming nonprofit, and so I had a couple of buddies Alex and Kyle. We can talk about later. That were trying to get going. They've been doing it kind of. guerrilla-style for before getting official, and so I kind of knew about it before retiring. And then it kind of kicked off. For ME I. I was volunteering here and there with more ways. I had some other gigs so right when I retired I started doing government contracting jobs I did that for a couple years before spending a lot more time volunteering than later coming on. As employees. So, Joe I just ask some general questions. Trying to do is cut those questions and stuff at the back, so feel free to take the lead, and you have the floor sounds it sounds like you talked a bit about something about diving for the navy and then sports. Now we're talking about why I came the navy. Sorry to repeat it, but. I came in hoping to be Navy diver. I've been a commercial diver for about six months in Galveston. Texas after drop Nettie. Collagen thought that'd be a good transition and When I tried to join the navy, they said the Dow closed and that they dove at butts that I should go try that. Sounds like a good idea and so. They had me take a job. That would allow me to go to buds. became a parachute rigger, so I went to school i. By Mos got my. Parachute rigger on. And then off to buds I, not really no one else doing. My parents were hippies so military people. No one wants to be joined. The Navy so really did not get into. So I imagine was a little bit of a surprise to show to buds. Learn what that school was or. Just just the suffer faster not quite ready for nicely. I imagine imagine that's quite interesting. SUFFER FEST! I also can imagine that doing the work that you did. Know you and I kind of a little bit of your background. I've imagine that really helps. Set you up for the mission at one more wave and getting on top of things and getting things moving. You maybe talk a little bit about that. Of maybe some things you learn from the Navy that you apply now at one more. Share just. Learned a lot towards the last couple of years at Miami my time in the service. How can help people in much really from? I've been injured several times while on active duty at spent time at the. At Naiko which I know, you're not talking about for jokes. The National Intrepid Center of Excellence Traumatic Brain Injury Clinic says Maryland runs, and so I started my treatment probably. This is probably two thousand ten zero five years before I retired, and so I have a lot of time to spend time with other folks that had had you know whether it was PGA s or All the kind of things that were happening to people are not super physical, but burying paxil sleep issues, and so I got exposed to lots of different therapies, and I just knew man. This is can't wait to spend more time doing this. And, so I was really excited because I learned all these things in the navy, but how can help other people at learned a lot about the va have across his work for compensation took care people how some days are better than others. Some states are Oracle, and and what? I didn't realize. Your percentage rate affects how you get treated to I was treated well, but I'm on a different ratings on people's. It's tough so I definitely learned a lot, you know. Early on about how to help other people do this and it really as you've seen Joe out. Watch people's faces. When you get to give him some equipment whether it's a board or a boogie board or people that have had nothing. He's got a wet suit like our friends in. Santa Cruz just the amazing transformation that happens. Not only from equipment, but from the community that step we all share the Melcher that we love. Not Picking up cigarette, butts or cleaning off the flight deck, but you know going out von and be talking a little trash, each other encouraging each other and just share. That shared experiences is powerful so. Yeah I definitely can attest that shared experience than to be fair. No ship Naidoo usually pick up cigarette butts, but easily on the beach and they drive us nuts, so that's why. It's quite funny. Were you a surfer before you've got out of the military and got with one more way? Has. Started at middle, school on off and then did it alter the teens long morning. And then took several years off and then kind of into it later on, so yes. We're always at the beaches, kids. We're always bodysurfing. Trying to collect fins like my friend Joe Against. Debbie me and my fin collecting hoarding abilities. That I have for quite

"Just able to kind of draw back on past experiences and. And you know things that maybe I did poorly in the past, but It's always nice playing trying to win it a police. You've already won an you know. I've only had that opportunity once other time in Malaysia but it's. It's pretty awesome all right? Let's continue storyline number two is that there is one major this year. I know that doesn't stand for the entire Calendar Year of twenty twenty, but in this PGA tour season there is one scheduled major championship. It's the TPC harding, Park Pga Championship it's only two months away like we're going to have major championship. Championship Golf. There's not a huge run up to a major league. We usually have January. February all of March leading up to the masters. We've got one this year. Whoever wins? It is going to have a great chance to win player of the year like if either of those two guys we just talked about when that event book it their player of the year well, we talked about golf, being like this sporting and getting lost in the shuffle, sometimes and now having this opportunity to shine. Shine, PGA Championship has that same opportunity right? There's no other majors around to distract US I know, but it happening in August means the NBA is going to be back in. The NHL is going to be back. They're going to be in the middle of their playoff swings I. Know the PGA Championship has always kind of struggled with its place in the sporting calendar, but people are gonNA. Be excited about other sports coming back, which makes me feel bad, but the end of that tour season think. Think about this thing about the absolutes sweepstakes. That will be happening. You have a WGC then. The PGA championship the next week. You have the Wyndham rewards in which the PGA tour Passover bunch of money. Then we have playoff event playoff event playoff event. I don't think there will have ever been a stretch in which more more Gulf or more money will be handed out on the golf course then that six weeks stretch. Yeah, good for you getting excited about the Wyndham rewards proud of you. That was a non sponsored segment by Sean sock but. I think the one thing that we should take away and keep in mind about this. One. Major season is a little bit of mourning for the Open Championship. That wasn't because. We're getting the US Open by you know by all accounts. There may not be fans, or they may not be many fans, but we're getting the masters that one's definitely gonNA happen. The open! Championship just didn't happen twenty twenty. That's too bad sunjay in.

"In August for the PGA championship we shall see about that a lot of this is a fluid situation as we all know and in a way in experimental phase with PGA tour to see how this is going to work but yeah it's gonna be a very condensed version of what you usually see on TV but I do give the PGA tour a lot of credit for trying right we're seeing substantive ideas out there we're seeing a schedule mapped out and it's something that I talk about on the podcast all the time Hey Jay Monahan I give you so much credit you're putting something out there you're giving fans hope and if the trials Walt doesn't happen in early June so be it it's something to look forward to we'll try again later in June we'll try again in July but we will have PGA tour golf sometime this summer I am calm but in about that in terms of fan not so confident as we stand yeah that's for sure do you think I've read different opinions on this that these tournaments will be fully attended by the players that some players will say you know what I'm not ready to take the chance what do you think players will be still champing at the bit so much to get back on the course in a competitive situation that you'll get some bigger fields and some of the smaller tournaments than you normally would so here's the interesting part about that right you're gonna have to different schools of thought you're gonna have maybe that big time all stars you don't necessarily need to rush to a particular tournament because they have the money they have their status they're not trying to retain their PGA tour cards and then you have the other golfers out there who feel like just for their livelihood for their career they have to get out there and maybe even research their own possible infection if you will by playing in this particular tournament so it's going to be really interesting to see how we actually see these fields filled out how in particular the Charles Schwab is going to be filled out now there are players out there such as Pat Perez who has publicly said no I don't feel comfortable starting in June you also have players like Brooks KEPCO who went on record to say yeah I'll show up at Charles Schwab so it could be really interesting experiment to see all right who's going to show up who's not I will mention to your real quick we probably won't see him until July at the very earliest at the memorial tournament I'm looking at the schedule right now I don't see it turn it before then where we see him on the golf course out for you tiger aficionados and that's how I feel about that but in terms of seeing some type of all star field for the Charles Schwab I don't have the best dancer in the world because honestly it's very individualized it depends on a particular player and how at ease they feel about this current pandemic and I will make one note about international players my co host has been very in tune to these types of players about their worries coming across the pond to actually play on the PGA tour because of the travel ban that are going on right now so that's another thing we got a factor in as well as we gear up for this wall that fort worth the final thing I will go back to tiger for a sack a recent headline about tiger saying he knows why his health has broken down at a relatively young age and a lot of people suspected on the blood doping thing and with that doctor from Toronto but indeed it was something else tell us about that camp yes Tiger Woods of course was a creature of habit in the early two thousands for sure still is but in the early two thousand this was a guy who was all the time about athleticism about hitting balls and winning golf tournaments and that as we all know tiger is a player who basically created the athlete golfer and that's why we have these Rickie Fowler and Rory McElroy who are gym rats out there and I applaud them for it but the downside was tiger would run miles on miles on end throughout the week while also playing golf on top of that which really just hurt his knees and I didn't see that especially like you're running on pavement or uneven surfaces that can do some damage to your knees can do some damage to your skin you get yourself when your heel pain and all this while also walking eighteen thirty six hole of the day it takes a toll on your body and I don't care who you are if you don't do the proper precautions Dratch rest ice it up or whatever you're gonna create some damage it as we know Richard tiger had a fair share of knee surgeries and operations so he did seem a little remorseful about it though you know okay yeah I probably ran a little too much when I was at a younger age and needs sitting here on a call with you at age twenty five I'm thinking to myself okay maybe I should tone down "Was a year and making to get here and to actually pull this off again, to be the low PJ professional to represent all the twenty thousand God. It's just a thrill. How 'bout met section? Five. You guys making it here. What you can play up here, the Mets X. What's gonna ask what's in the water? But I see you're not drinking water right now. You're week is over. But, but what, what was met section so incredibly strong in terms of the golf that you guys play. We've always protected teaching playing here in that section. Good players are looked at as good good PG professionals. And if we can do our jobs and take care of our membership and played high level and teach and coach and, and sell shirts, and fold shirts properly, we can, you know, we, we can do it. We can do we put a lot of time and effort into our golf games. We want people to know that the section is, is the best playing section the country and that culture is something that's really special because not all the sections value players is much as this met section. Does how could you maybe get that messaging to some other sections and say, hey, it's important for. For your PJ professionals to be able to compete to get out and play golf a little bit more something that that's just not done in every section. Well, the PGA stands for professional golfers association. So if you're a professional golfer, you have to be able to play well and. For me. I just playing such a big part of my life. It's part of my blood. It's part of my DNA. My family knows it's my first love of never divorced, golf through a divorce once I've got a great wife now which I'm never divorcing, but it's, it's one of those things where golf is so special and you got for me. You have to play well to be able to coach well and do your job. Well, that's just part of the way I feel about it. And I'm there. You gotta get playing good golf and to be here out. This arena is just a second. Tell me about this golf course it looks to me from our vantage point here, looking up eighteen fairway teen green in the distance at it's playing a good bit harder today than it's played any other three rounds. Is that the case? Yeah, the wind today was when it blows in this direction when you have fifteen sixteen seventeen eighteen with this wind makes the golf course we Diculeng hard, the first hole, the front nine is actually pretty good with this win. But you come into the back nine with this win and it just throws you in a loop. You got hit the fairways, if you don't hit the fairways, you're punching out. And if you have to punch out you're trying to get up and down from either one hundred fifty two close to the green. It's just really,.

"For the wind and knock it down. Kef hits left sends it through some trees lands at on the edge of the bunker and a kicks forward through the green just scoots past the golf ball of herald. Varner is gonna decent live. But he's gonna play at cross a slope that later on down a little unlucky, but tough shot out of the rough for your championship leader cap gun at twelve underplaying the fifth and just off the back. Right of the green bad break. Their Charlie another couple of feet, and that might have been a lot better has really surprised. See that ball hit that hard. You're exactly right. If it had carried a couple more feet and landed in a flat or spot and he probably be walking up to the green with the puttering, his hands right now. But as Mark said that lives, not too bad that look like Swami brutal pitch from where he is Fiji junior league is the game changing way to learn and play golf PGA LPGA professionals provide expert coaching for boys and girls bringing families and friends together through fun and engaging team experiences. To learn more, visit PGA junior league. Dot com. So this is exactly what Brooks would've expected today if he looks at leaderboard sees you comes Dustin making charge, right. Yeah. He would think the guy that's gonna make the run would be Dustin. Johnson, of course, good buddies played a lot of golf together. And then good buddies for a long time and Brooks, very well aware of the fact that he's a little bit ahead of Dustin Johnson at major category. Major championship category. Course rooks with the three majors Dustin with just one. But I got to think when both these careers are over that number might be pretty close. And they're both going to be out here in added a long time and we're seeing a little of that today, even though Brooks is running away from this field. And the story has been all the superlatives for Brooks KEPCO, it's world number-one, Dustin Johnson, who is the closest pursuer right now. Two hundred eight through six seven under for the week and five shots back the guy that has enough shots to maybe keep some heat on Brooks KEPCO who.

"Alongside PGA tour veteran and proud PGA America, member, Charlie rhymer. I'm Brian k trick. We are on the eighteenth hole here and the black course at Bethpage state park Farmingdale, New York KEPCO a winner, the last time we were on Long Island. It was less than a year ago that the US open over at Shinnecock Hills. He didn't have a full year with the Wanamaker trophy either with this tournament moving from August to may and Charlie, it seems like he wants a little more time with that historic trophy. I certainly looks like he he's gonna get it. Seven shot seems like an insurmountable lead. But this is golf Brian, you watch all the way to the. N you just never know what's going to happen yesterday. A couple of times look like Brooks KEPCO was going to stretch that lead to ten eleven shots. He just looked at good. And then all of a sudden, he misses a little short one that number nine a little three-putt bogey ten. Couple of guys closed him might make a run two or three hundred par something like you got to watch it all the way to the end. But if I'm a veteran man believe me, I'm taking Brooks KEPCO, well, every good betting man knows that streaks end eventually and the streaked at by now you've heard no one in PGA tour history. And that includes the major championships has ever lost a seven shot lead in the final round a little bit of clarification for that before you. You've pipe up in the car and say, what about this guy, there's been plenty of guys that have come from farther back than seven shots, but they didn't catch a player that had a seven shot lead on the field. So it's just a little different situation here, and it's never happened. Is it finally the time for the odds to be defied? It seems unlikely with this leader as we take a look at him over on the practice area. Brooks KEPCO just seems impervious. Mark Carnovale has been walking every step of the way with Brooks KEPCO. He was the nineteen Ninety-two Arnold Palmer award winner, PGA tour veteran. I've had the great pleasure and honor of sharing towers. Just like this with him over the last nearly twenty years, Mark you and I have spent a lot of time watching this game. And you spent even more than that watching and playing it yourself kept looks fantastic this week. Tell us what you've seen, but I see a player.
