Jumping Into Markdown

"Many Stephen Hackett, and I, have joined is always of my co-host and friend Mr David sparkes. Hello. Steven. How are you? Today? I'm good. How are you? I am ready to talk about markdown. We're touching the third rail here. The podcasting Faux Pas, we're going to talk about a little bit about coating on an audio podcast. I, think mark down the big exception. As we get into this. The whole idea is that it's really simple and so I think we can talk to this syntax and be just fine. Yeah Yeah. Well, this is a good episode we're going deep on markdown today Marc out something that a lot of people are aware of, but not as many people know how to do and it is really easy get through this podcast today. Down pro. I think so too before we get into all of that just real quick it is. We are in August. Now, I don't know how that happened. But we we will be working on and planning episodes around Iowa's fourteen. Macara's Big Sur. Couple of people had had asked about those I. Think we'll do what we did last year and and have A. Episode per release win. That is nobody knows and so we we're kind of keeping an eye on apple said in their results at the phone will be later this year by a couple of weeks does that mean? In Big Sur. Later, by couple weeks to WHO knows nobody knows. So this is going to be a fun adventure all in together this year. And related questions I've had from people are what about shortcuts and the photos field guide the most of those areas got up with this new operating system I. Think I'm going to have an a free update shortcuts when they launch Iowa's where team, but the question is nobody knows when they'll launch it. So if they launch it next week, I will not have an update ready, but there will be an update eventually or hopefully on launch day for shortcuts followed by a free update photos both of those will be free last year. I had to charge for shortcuts because apple rewrote shortcuts I to do the whole thing from scratch fortunately, that's not the case this year. So I'll have some so free updates. If you've already about those field guides also today we are going to in more power users. We're GONNA talk some tech stuff stephen is getting ready to prep for the annual the podcast on and right there's a bunch of technology involved with that. So we're looking forward to talking about that more power users today. So technology and sobbing both. Both. Right now. I really this is a stranger I have a lot of questions. boy Yeah. So let's get into. It's going to mark down. Just. A touch of background markdown was created by John Gruber the writer of daring fireball. We spoke about this episode four, hundred, sixty, six AMAC power users where he was a guest talk about the history of it. He's given other interviews about the history of markdown. and. It's really cool I. Mean it is sort of the definition of writing a project to scratch an edge. You have. He wanted a tool for riding on the web that wasn't. Junkie and Messi like html is and markdown came out of that desire I. think that's pretty cool. Yeah I mean John had a blog. He was one of the first that I was aware of the did the linked posts you know where he would link something and make a few comments about it, but it also have more extensive posts. and. He wanted simple method right in. So he did He created his own tool, and who would a guest that it became such a big thing. It's everywhere and we're GonNa get to that later in the episode of just how many places you can use markdown and it shows up in some pretty surprising projects and websites across the Internet. And the idea of it really though at its at its foundational level is just something you can write with any plain text editor that at the end of the process gives you usable text for html at least that was the original idea now since then it's become so much more because now you can export as rich text and you can do all sorts of cool things with markdown but having a starting point where you can sit there with the keyboard and not have to fiddle with code snippets and make something that's usable later. That's right. So the initial pitch when Gruber announced it is that this is a tool to convert plane tech's to html for people who are riding on the web, and so if you're blogging and you need Italics were bold or links, you don't have to do that in html you can do it in mark down and then they're marginally two things. It's the syntax and there's an interpreter and you can. Get it on your website and it Lowe's html and everybody sees a regular web page. But like you said over the years it has. Shown up everywhere. It's even supported in x code now as of a couple of years ago, which is gonNA. Feel pretty good. If you're if you're John Right this product you built being blessed and put an exco that's gotta be pretty. Cool. Talking about those two pieces of let's break them down for a second because the first piece to me is almost is definitely more important than the second piece in the first piece is it's a text syntax where you can include links and rich text items without having a rich text. You know nobody in air quotes here, word processor at your disposal, and that is something that's very useful but the syntax in addition to being something that's easily convertible he also made it and I think this is the genius of markdown he made easily readable. So when you read if I put a page of html in front of anybody listening to the show next to page of mark down. It would be obvious how much easier it is to read markdown than html because h inasmuch codes and tags and other things in it that really get in the way of finding the words whereas markdown is all about the words and the very simple syntax we're gonNA teach you here shortly. embeds all that stuff for you. So you don't you don't need to worry about.

"November eighteen sixty six winter falls Massachusetts. As a door slowly creak open. Drawn. grief-stricken face of Alice McClure was revealed from within the homes, dark? Interior. Shame swelled into a solid lump and Henry ups chest, which then rose to his throat as he tried to speak. Finally. Managing to stammer a few words of condolences to Rebecca's mother. Alice quietly expressed her thanks. And opened the door wide to make room for Henry. To enter stepping over the threshold Henry was enveloped into the dense shadows of the sambre room. Bringing his is until they adjusted to the darkness Henry's attention was instantly drawn to Amir of the fireplace which I've been covered in a heavy black velvet. The mere sight of the mirror started his heart racing and sweat to beat along his hairline. Henry followed Alice to the kitchen table where she offered him refreshments. And then poured him a generous glass of whisky. Drink it down lad. It's what we do at a Scottish like Wake Alice explained. Needing little persuasion Henry gulped the whiskey down and just a couple of swigs. The welcome liquid heat felt his body like a naming south. Giving him a pat on the arm. Alice asked Henry to follow her upstairs. Honor the McClure's Scottish traditions as new immigrants to the United States town of winter evolves arranged for a few youths to take turns watching over a Becca body every night until her burial. And tonight it was. Henry's turn. Alice solemnly lead Henry, upstairs to a dimly lit bedroom. Seated around the perimeter of the room or Matilda Hutton Joshua Derby and Sarah. Greet each other with a nod of their heads Henry's attention was then drawn to the bed at the head of the room. Illuminated by the soft golden glow of candlelight. Lay Rebecca. Dressed in a Ghazi white shroud. Her arms crossed over her chest her eyes closed as if any peaceful sleep. Made a stark contrast to the last time Henry saw her. Crumpled, broken on his family's cellar floor. Alice Motion Henry over to Rebecca's corpse. Upon closer inspection, his first impression of her dissipated. Her Skin blotchy and discolored with a Pale blue cast appear dry and Steph. Her once big expressive is now sunk deep in her skull were scarcely covered by the malted paper thin skin ever eyelids. At the corner of her mouth was a dried cracking drop of blood. Unsure. What was expected of him Henry Finally commented She looks so peaceful. I allies responded. Taking notice of the dried blood. She left her thumb and rubbed the stain vigorously. That is until Rebecca's mouth popped open into a wide silence scream. Henry's friends seated in the room. All audibly startled in their chairs the frightful image. Henry looked at them and with one simple expression they knew. He was telling them to be quiet. Be Still. Without visibly acknowledging the horror of the site before them Alice gently pushed Rebecca Shaw closed and tied at length of cloth a cloth that had been draped on Rebecca's shoulder up around her jaw to the top of her head keeping her mouth forcibly shut once and for all. Sensing that she was waiting for him to do something Henry could only to say, I'll keep good watch over her tonight. I have no doubt. Then Alice looked at Henry and said you must touch her you know. Pardon Henry asked. It's customary is tradition from the old country. Keeps nightmares, illness away they say. PA- mainly, it's a sign of respect. Erin who visits the dead must touch them. She shrugged. Oh. All right. Where shall I touch her? The choice is yours lad. Though in general, most just touch the forehead or shoulder. Wherever, you feel most comfortable. Reaching out Henry's hand begin to tremble slightly as he moved slowly in his uncertainty. As the last moment, he found himself drawn to touch the tight shiny skin of her cheek, but he immediately regretted it and upon feeling her cold rigid flesh, he quickly pulled away.

How to Pivot and Persevere with AJ Picard

"I wanNA. Do Asia is really focus on today's topic, which is going to be all about how to pivots in persevered, and these are two things that have never never been more important than this post cove in one thousand. Thousand Nine hundred world that we live in for sure there's a lot of pivoting going on. There's a lot of persevering going on and guess what fire nation if you are falling short and either of those categories, you are gonNA struggle, but if you are just thriving in both of those, then you can be thriving as well so less with your background AJ. Who the heck are you? Where are you from? And then what? The heck got you here to this point today? Man. I'm actually from born and raised from Philadelphia Pa. Living in Maryland and I kind of started my entrepreneurial journey back in two thousand seventeen when I started going full time on developing the social media at that I'm now pushing. Right now called Clara. And what club really does is just help. You feel more connected to your surrounding community by providing our users with a way to connect with locals in the area and discover things to do in their community as well, so let's maybe talk quickly about club, because I am curious like how you initially came up with this idea like I love talking about the Aha moment like that poor in like why that happened for you and then also sure just like one or two. You think are kind of cool case. Studies of people that are used Clovis excessively for one was actually sitting in the king of Prussia Mall. Near Philadelphia, it's it's massive mall and I was in the food court, and I was just people watching day, and it was around the time back in two thousand fourteen, when instagram started kind of picking up traction and twitter. We had snapchat as well and I was thinking to myself. Why couldn't I why can't I I guess? Hone in on a specific location and connect with people in that same location as me almost like a hyper local platform, so that's kind of how I thought of that idea of. Like. I want to connect with people that are in this mall right now. Correct correct and I was like you know this could be a great way. You know if I'm in college to meet New People at a party. That might be super crowded it could be used at a networking event or even at a sports game, just just to connect with people in that same location that you're currently that that was the goal. Is this for businesses to? Because like what kind of POPs into? My mind is like I'm walking into King. King of Prussia Mall and I get an alert on my phone, says hey, not sure if you're hungry if you are for the next ten minutes, we're going to have fifty percent off. Pretzels over at pretzels are us in like I would just be like well. I wasn't actually that hungry. Until you just kind of maybe think of Pretzel in my mouth so here off I go. Is that like one of those things that could happen? Man So these businesses can create a location based announcements or promotion so to speak so when users. Don't into that specific location where their promotion is located in. They're going to collect it, which means that you know if you did walk in through that King of Prussia. Mall Front door. You collect every promotion that that business in that King of Prussia. Mall's currently promoting. So you know we offer that that I guess easy transition to discover discovering things to do in your surrounding area and active promotions in your surrounding. Surrounding area from from local businesses located around you and the one thing that POPs up in my mind is kind of like a potential user is at what point is overwhelmed like walking into a mall and there's a hundred and twenty four stores and get one hundred twenty four promotions like a one point. Is that just become like spam mail that we all get our inbox? That is a great point, we actually. Actually plan on fixing this issue as we start to grow, and we're GONNA limit the amount of promotions or announcements in specific location, so it's going to be super exclusive. Obviously we would. We would have to charge these businesses more, but as of now we're just trying to get businesses inside and and willing to promote

Chelsea’s Lampard tells Liverpool not to get too arrogant

"Shocker Shirley. It's not about the profanity to hear more about our Lampard said calling Liverpool arrogant. What do you think about the words in the Chelsea manager? I have no problem with the exchanges as they have on the sidelines. These things happen every single game. Between managers between players between teammates and the training, so there's nothing new or unique about this other than. points out the fact that there's no crouch. Obviously, we hear a lot, Clara. Do take a little bit of exception to frank coming out and seeing well, he would have had a beer with with you in club, but for what was said on the sidelines, not by Union club by the. Coaches. I read that has anything to do with it. You have these heated exchanges. Both men with would know this. And then you go in and you. You have a drink as much as do after the game. And you move on. I don't see why anything. About bolted, but to use that as an excuse, not to have a drink with and club I thought a little bit silly, and then you can klopp kind of doubled down on the silliness by him bringing up what Frank Lampard said in the. Post game press conference. A whole lot of silliness at play here that somehow snowballed into an issue. Greg just to clarify. Do you see any point to what Lampert says when he calls Liverpool, aggregate. No not are the best team in the country. This year in terms of the league possession by a male. They have a manager who demands is teamwork hard. They celebrate that enthusiastic. Mirror image of their manager in terms of desire and their enthusiasm and the drive. And I don't think anybody thinks. The arrogant. I think we don't know what was said from the bench from one of the coaches whether they threw something and jokes, he's face we don't know. So, you know only allow these coaching staff and the substitutes would have heard that, but certainly from eleven club playing perspective. There's no arrogance. Whatsoever. What we have to remember here Frank Pas and second unit management right false, cheering the premier league, the needed a point. To Guarantee Champions League football. Game against all needed to get something probably be. Champions League, the pressure was on. The result was going against them Liverpool. Tearing them apart at one point, he was not seeing as clear as normally would. Hide a moment. And there's nothing wrong with our have we can. We can agree and disagree about was used, but there's shock shocker, said this thing. This thing happens and. Both of them are think of. Something wrong here? Because as I said at that Light, Jurgen, KLOPP's in lesson, we're furniture after the vinyl west and he's basically telling lump. Economy say after the final West. Caught, you should rise above the. Chocolate. What about the point that? Craig makes your? Maybe the pressure of the end of his first premier league season getting a little bit. Be, and of course that's that's an excuse for a very good excuse me very well. The benefactor, but I, as as I said before and Craig agreed with Double Don. These things happen this this is not unique. This is not just about an end. Game! This is not just about the manager in in the second year in and management. Aw, the data WanNa pressure these things happen every single game whether it's I be fourth or thirteen three sixteenths. These things happen on the sidelines at just taking on a different context because of clearly hear it. Because of. What's unstick as far as neutral concerned? I and The fact that the managers in play our Jurgen Klopp who is the premier league champion, and still defending European champion and Frank Lampard as a player who's seen it and wanted to all and a little bit of her clash. There's no more to it than. Van That

Players blitz NFL with tweets about safe return

"And thank you so much for joining us seven am on the east coast this. Get up I'm Ryan Smith in for my Greenberg, and we will be with you for the next two hours with a lot to cover from the weekend, especially from the world of the NFL, because believe it or not, we're just fifty two days away from the Super Bowl champion chiefs, and the Houston Texans opening the NFL regular season as rookies from both of those teams will be the first players to report to training camps today, but a big development yesterday of NFL players took to twitter. Twitter yesterday to voice their concerns about the safety protocols put in place or lack thereof chiefs quarterback Patrick mahomes. Said this getting ready to report this week hoping the NFL will come to agreement with the safe and right protocols, so we can feel protected playing the sport. We Love Hashtag. We WanNA play. The saints drew brees. We need football. We need sports. We need hope, but the NFL's unwillingness to follow the recommendations of their own medical experts will prevent that if the NFL doesn't do their part to keep players healthy, there is no football in twenty twenty. It's that simple. Get it done NFL and seahawks. Russell. Wilson I am concerned. My wife is pregnant. NFL training camp is about to start, and there is still no clear plan on player, health and family safety. We want to play but football, but we also want to protect our loved ones again Hashtag, we wanNA play over the weekend NFL PA Vice President Sam. Acho gave this recommendation. If safety plans are not in place. The recommendations for some of the rookies, and also some of the players is to report right now we have a week until all the other ninety gas or supposed to report, and so as of now we're telling players get ready and stay ready, but if the NFL doesn't come up with these plans, you cannot show up.

"Josh mccown, Frankenstein Monster Yeah. I got one more deep cut, even deeper, two, thousand, five, the cardinals duels, Larry, Fitzgerald and Anquan Boldin. Hm. Yes! They had Kurt Warner then, but he was a hot mess coming off his stick with the giants essentially forced out by. Ally Manning was not ready to start yet. That's right hurt watering his first year. Only plenty of ten games on you and there other quarterback that season on take guess it was. mccown Josh mccown. And something called John Navarre. Even thought some games. Those three combined for four thousand, seven hundred nineteen passing yards, Tom Brady led the league that year with four thousand, one hundred ten yards, but they would have been the combined league leader by eight hundred yards, nearly the only combined for twenty one passing touchdown, but only one quarterback tops thirty, passing touchdown, two thousand five, and that was Carson Palmer with thirty two, and if you remember, he had to wide receiver with the time with Chad, Johnson and t j commission was Outta so. Ten Tom Brady Ken Tom Brady be a top five quarterback. Absolutely now will. He is the question we got. Mahomes L. Jackson and deck, barring holdout locked in at the top three. Would you agree they're charging? Yeah, those are my. Three quarterbacks right now. So now we got two spots to still, and we're looking at guys like the Shawn Watson Russell Wilson. Cuyler Murray and I'm even gonNA. Throw Josh Allen in that mix. And basically these eight guys, even including mahomes. The rushing upside is just too high for me that I think. Two of these guys is GonNa. Fill the foreign five spot leading brady just on the outside but Brady certainly those who? Could be a top five quarterback. Yeah, it's the rushing that where Brady sorta falls apart in today's game for fantasy. Just these rushing quarterbacks can score points in ways that you guys that don't rush Tom Brady really really hard to equal that with just your arm so I. Think I think you're right that that kind of keeps Tom Brady out of that top tier, but the sites tremendous, and by the way you didn't even mention Rob Gronkowski. Saving that for you charge though saving your guy. You appreciate that area on top. And OJ Howard can finally come to fruition. Brady's looking at a pretty big year downtown. POMPA sorry. and. Let's Tom Brady by the way going off the board right now as quarterback fourteen. And we're talking about him. Can he work his way into quarterback? Five territory I think he can do that pretty easily. So Tom Brady is I think one of the one of the steel quarterbacks that you could go get and. Couldn't just couldn't dropped into a better situation while we're talking about Brady and quarterbacks. Let's switch over to Cam. Newton, the guy who replaces Tom Brady note yet easy to do no problem there. I contend that Cam. Newton has as much very intense to him upside. Downside has any quarterback you could draft. What do you think about cam? Newton's prospects in New England? Yeah let's take a brief history lesson with Cam Newton's. Fantasy finishes since he was a rookie in twenty eleven starting in twenty eleven here was quarterback finishes qb, four QB four qb five..

"Your League needs to do to prepare for Covid, because if you if you wait and. Wait and see and try to handle it in season. Based on whatever happens in season league is going to unravel. Friendships are going to end because. Everybody's GonNa just want to do what's best for themselves. When covid issues hit in the middle of season, you gotta get all. That stuff straightened out in the preseason. If the Cova clause that is, he had to get all your Cova clauses, and there are many, and you haven't thought of them. All everybody's like well. Okay. We'll just use I are now I'm telling you. This thing has got a lot. Lot of tentacles to it and the last fantasy football weekly episode talks about all the things you're. League needs to get straightened away in the preseason before the season starts I, love I'm so excited that we get to talk about fantasy football right now camps and like ten or eleven days. Yeah, we need side. I'm ready for football. Baby, he the. It's been a long weird off season, hasn't it? And I think it's going to happen. I mean. Everytime bring up almost anything on twitter related football. Somebody's gotTa, come back with. Was Not going to be used season while even to even posting it. The NFL's to do everything they can to make sure there is a season. How dare you? have any optimism in your heart or in your head about our ability to find a solution and make something work out there. You know what a terrible way to look at life. In general way, isn't it yes? Here's the thing. The owners want the season to happen. The players want the season to happen. The fans want the season to happen. Every you know all the momentum is to make it happen, so let's figure out how to do bright. Let's let's let's figure it out, and that's what they're doing. Will some players get covert? Of course, they will yes, nobody's GonNa die not at their age. These guys are. All Alba commune..

"It was a broke down play to the right. He ends up coming all the way back across the formation I was dropping coverage, because it was a pass like bootleg to start okay, and and He comes around the corner like a freight train that like a speeding bullet like like an old linemen running. You know four four and I'm like what? At that point you see your career, your life for your eyes, you realize that your career almost overnight hanging on this point and no, and he he he, he is just a be I was sad to see him sort of rest on what he? you know what he thought? He was as young player and kind of go away I mean that's the thing that's funny about him as he. He kind of just disappeared. And then all of sudden this resurgence in this kind of. This idea that he could be one of the best ever people mind to it. And he did and look what they was able to accomplish last year and we'll see they can be able to keep a calm, but the head coach they have their now is GonNa be it's GONNA be run game. Bait you tell the contract they gave him and that offense is going to be a problem, so get this last year. Once Ryan Tannehill took over. The titans averaged seven and a half yards per play. Wow that's the most in the NFL. Over the last twenty years. The titans so tannehill. Tannahill throwing periodically, but mostly running derrick, henry seven and a half yards per play it's. Needed of course when you look at that off the line right and let it they're good. Cohesive at the biggest thing is when you talk about. Line. We've had olen conversations around here for how many nine higher tied fourteen. Fourteen so at least that many years. It's always talk about not necessarily to me. You know there's so many good lineman right, but that cohesiveness of the group can you stay healthy altogether? Can you all on the same page? And sometimes it doesn't mean you have the best players. Sometimes it just means you have the group, and and they certainly have good player office of line, but let's be honest. I mean Derrick. Henry can create some of his own magic and own holes, but he have to have a lot of help and I. do think the way roughly tannehill and keeping it simple. Brilliance in this year to see how Folks Carolina box and try to stop them, and then what they can do on the outside of what pantyhose can really bring to the table and they got this rookie receiver last year's rookie. Aj Brown. Who is awesome and if that's where you get in trouble if you try stacking stop? Derrick Henry now. They've got receiver. That can burn you. They never had that before. The Washington Post story, Scott screen grabs of the text messages that these men sent. It's so ham handed disheartening, disgusting pathetic. And it's real. It's heartbreaking to to see the text messages that sort of bring it to a light beyond just the Washington Post. Telling US what it said. When you actually see it, you can see the conversation unfolding. Awful it's. And it it's widespread enough in these. These guys acted with such a sense of immunity. NFL rumors: Players that test positive for coronavirus will be out (at least) 3 weeks

"Today there was a report that the NFL and NFL PA agreed that there will be kind of separate I are list. Four players who get the krona virus? It'll be three weeks. They will be fully paid, but that is. That is one small detail and the bigger news the bigger. Global Picture is that we are technically only two days away as we tape this from a couple of teams including the Texans, rookies are supposed to show up for training camp. The NFL owners have a big call on Friday in which I expect, there will be news about certainly those rookies, not showing up and you know very possibly training camp getting pushed back, but I think. The the biggest takeaway is here. There's they're pretty far away feels like an even coming to terms with how this will look at the same time that you know five six seven NFL. Teams are in some of the worst places that you could possibly be. In the entire country.

Top 5 Films of 2020 (So Far) / Inception (Nolan

"Welcome to film spotting another week another delay Josh for ten at the latest from Christopher Nolan that film now scheduled for an August twelfth release. It means I guess we can space out these final. Few films are Nolan. A little bit more. Yeah, I suppose it gives us that, but still sad news I mean obviously for both of us for most people one of the most anticipated movies of the year just to keep see it getting pushed back. Yeah, and you have to wonder whether or not August twelfth is realistic with Covid. Nineteen cases spiking all over the country. Nolan's inception, which celebrates its tenth anniversary. This year is as of this recording Josh still scheduled to return to theaters, tenants original slot on July seventeenth. So you have Nolan doing basically what we did. When the pandemic he went to his archive for content, sure and we, we went back to movies. We've for the most part already talked about here on the show. These films do comprise Nolan retrospective what we're calling the Uber Review and it continues with the inception this week. Our podcast listeners. Listeners will hear some listener feedback from our recent Spielberg show, we did a forty fifth anniversary. Sacred Cow Review of jaws, and we power ranked the five decades. Spielberg's directing career just a few weeks ago, before taking a quick break, that was a fun show Josh. And surprisingly we only got a few angry emails about your daring to play Spielberg's nineties output in your last slot number five. Yeah, well sometimes when you're faced with the truth Adam, there's not much more you can say. Yeah I did have at four, so I'm not sure that I'm shielded from all that hatred, either we will get to all that later in the show, but first adamant. I have seen a fair number of new releases this year. Just you know at Home Hey Adam and Josh. This is your former production assistant. Andy Mitchell with a recommendation for your best film of two thousand so far. That film is Sam failures disclosure. Documentary about. Nothing less than the history of cinema and television through the Lens of the transgender community, it may look like a typical activists film, but it plays more like the story of film series that Markelle cousins did a few years ago weaves together clips. From from the silent era today with fascinating reactions from dozens of trans artists. I'm telling you I did not expect to come away from this. Thinking a daytime talk show like Jerry. Springer might have actually been helpful in some way, so check it out. It's streaming now on net flicks. I, hope you give it a watch. Thanks for the show here's hoping for a better back half of twenty twenty, always nice to hear from our former PA Andy Mitchell and a great recommendation there. I know we've both been rushing over the past week to fit in some movies that we hadn't caught up with yet this year. I did make time for disclosure after Andy's recommendation and even though it didn't. Didn't make my top five. I'm with Andy highly recommend the film and he mentioned it almost playing more like a story of film series. I think that's what's so remarkable about the documentary is if Sam Feder had come to me for any advice on how to approach the subject matter. I might have said if you're GONNA. Try to tell the entire history of. transgender representation in cinema you probably either have to pick that lane or pick the lane of telling these more personal stories of the various performers and artists who are following in the wake of that, and who are now carving out their own identities on screen, and how far we've come talk about that evolution with maybe a little bit of that perspective. Josh of course needed, but it would divide. Divide the documentary too much, and somehow it is this absolutely thorough edifying look at the way. Cinema has typically represented transgender identity, but it also reveals these really amazing personal stories of these artists so definitely recommend disclosure available now Netflix and I suppose with that Josh Let's get into our countdown. It has certainly been an odd year, but we feel like we've seen enough movies and certainly more. Small movies, maybe in terms of the big Hollywood releases. We haven't been able to get out to the theater. That's for sure, but it's really been a boon for video on demand opportunities, and for seeing a lot of movies that would fit into our golden brick type of category I have three potential golden bricks among my top five, so movies made by new. New Directors or new to US director. Is that similar for you? Yeah I think that's what's had the most effect on my left. Compared to previous years, which is a good thing you know we. We do our best to give attention to these smaller films and this strange year without major theatrical releases. We've been able to do even more of that so i. I think this list would probably look a little different If there had been the usual theatrical release date, but I still feel really good about the films that I have on my list, and it's going to be a mix of some. We've talked about even reviewed together on the show Adam and a few a couple that we haven't

Dear prudence. My wife and I are in our forties, and I friend into something. I was hoping to put off or both overweight I'm a big and tall man. She's just a stocky short woman. We're probably average for the US. Being overweight doesn't impede our lives, and we live a relatively healthy lifestyle that said my wife has had serious psychological issues with her weight for entire life. This is deep, seated thing and his counterpane. I do my best to help her, and she's in therapy, but it's an ongoing process. I think she's beautiful. She's a sexy. Now's the day I met her and tell her that, but I know this doesn't solve everything I generally avoid the topic of weight at her request and believe her that her years of sincere dieting, trying new exercise regimes. have mostly ended in despair. She's trying to be happy with her body as it is, and it's a long slow journey. Last year we went on vacation with a couple of friends of ours, and on the way home I've confessed that she had been crying in the shower each night at the hotel, because her best friend had lost a lot of weight, and she felt like a whale in comparison, just seeing the change something. She believes she can't have certainly not easily made her deeply sad. Of course she was nothing but nice joyful were altogether as she keeps to herself. The issues that my doctor has told me that I should consider losing weight given my family history of high blood, pressure and cholesterol. Now that I'm approaching. Approaching Middle Age I'm starting to consider it. The problem is a note. Be Easy for me as tall man to just stop snacking, start some exercise routines and drop pads. I think this would devastate my wife who would feel awful that a partner can do this thing so easily that she would give her right for she would have to see my accomplishment and to her her failure every day, so stay fluffy for her. It's my body sure, but it's a relationship and I love her. We're happy together and we spent a longtime building. Our life together I don't want to hurt her. I'm so torn. Woo. There's a lot happening there. I think it's clear that the letter writer loves his wife deeply and really wants to be helpful to her. Where possible, so we don't want to be too hard on him, but I do think the the the thing that you think. Is Your problem right now? I respectfully disagree that it's the problem. Like? There's this certainty of all it's going to take is to minor adjustments, and I know that I'm going to lose this amount of weight immediately. It's going to happen. It's guaranteed because I'm a guy because I'm tall. All that's GONNA. Require me to tackle these two little shifts with no effort, and I'm going to automatically become this. I'm going to have this new appearance. Maybe that will happen. Maybe it won't. I. I don't think you can count on that as a guarantee. and I wonder if part of what's going on there is. Again you you? You might feel this in conjunction with a real love for and desire to help your wife, but there's this sort of assumption here of like. This is going to be really easy for me. How do I deal with the fact that I? Don't have body image issues, and my relationship to fatness is super. You know laid back lazy-faire, uncomplicated, unburdened by body image issues, and when that's made obvious to my wife, it's going to destroy her.

"And by the way most Angela, seven minutes of your expecting the sign guys to get faster now back and happen. Yeah, this is you know that's how that's how these songs were. Yeah, this one is only three minutes and forty check. That's unusual. A thirty second preview that really is that's that's not. Not. You covered the debris situation a fair amount of detail yesterday. Yeah, we. We hit on it, we we didn't do actually. A ton of deep diving had at Ron Johnson in studio kind of mentioned it in passing but Of the concept of what I've been talking with you offaire over the last couple of days is. A two minute a two minute snippet of. Him, speaking thoughtfully, at least thoughtfully from his perspective. And what the flag and the anthem means to him. You know. All of that was completely eradicated dismissed. There were explosions in the sky in many ways because our started out the first four seconds to his answer, so I believe the the question was essentially. Hey, you know how the NFL should respond if players kneel during the national anthem this season in protest of police, brutality and racial justice, and what his responsibility is as a leader. During a time like this. And he noted. I'll never respect somebody who disrespects the flack. Yeah, drew brees, said that not Ron Johnson not. Ron Johnson no not Ron Johnson, that was drew. brees is comment. and. Well. chaos ensued, chaos ensued. He's issued at least two formal apologies. Sense then also. We've had both Tony Dungy Shannon Sharpe way in with two very different approaches to what drew, said and the appropriate response. Let's start with the Tony Dungy side and what Tony said about drew brees. All have have we and we have to have drew brees. Sam what he said I don't I. Don't downgrade drew for that. Okay? That's what he said in. May Not totally understand. It may have been on not exactly the way he wanted to express, but he can't be afraid to say that and we can't be afraid to say okay drew I don't agree with you, but let's talk about this and let's let's look. Sit Down and talk. Talk about it. We can't just say anytime. Something happens. We don't agree with it. I'm done with that and I'm done with this person, and that doesn't make sense We have to be better than that. This battle is not gonna be one by demonstrating the throwing bricks through windows I. It's not going to be one by. The government sent a willing WANNA. Bring out. These weapons dominate streets again. That is not going to take anything. For Dungy and I what I hear him saying is. People need to be able to say what they think and if they're if they are on the wrong side of something, here is our opportunity to educate them. And help them understand. which is a very Tony Dungy approach? Most of the people in this market are very aware of Tony. Who Obviously was defensive coordinator here gone onto a hall of fame caliber career won a super bowl. Then let's parallel that with what Shannon. Said tweeded. Let's get a little audio from Shannon. Responding to drew brees and what's made the black? Fight so hard as people like drew brees. Because you can't get a guy that grew up with blacks in the locker room from hyperion, peewee the high school college to the NFL to understand the black man's plight. Who will what about guys does not around blacks on a daily basis that have not been around blacks on a daily basis like drew brees. Do Repair something that I found. A foul insulting to be quite honest with you. He said my grandfathers fought in World War Two I did not know to me and one World War Two skip. They should be commended, but did he know that black man allow alongside his grandfather in World War Two, although in segregated military. They were fighting in a foreign land. Probably boy freedom that when they came home, they did not enjoy like drew reasons, Grandfather's did. There was about five and a half total minutes. It's yeah, it's a long diatribe mostly about World War Two yes I. Don't think that drew. BREES was trying to exclude the. The Efforts accomplishments of. Black servicemen in World War. Two I don't think that was part of the part of what he was trying to. But maybe more importantly is what Shannon Sharpe tweeted in conjunction with this video cell. He then tweeted the video of have him, and his his long speech, and then said drew brees should probably retire. And I believe he said at some point during that five and a half minute. Comment that segment on first take on able to fight it in a few minutes. I tried to to upload audio. But the the idea of humor tyrant, so you have. I mean just like a lot of topics two very different approaches to this and the polarity of it and the. The toughest thing here I think is the. Leaving ambiguity in the statement because we saw from his teammate, his new teammate, fresh from Philly Malcolm Jenkins. We saw it from players throughout the league. You know it's it's instantly again. The now that this is back on the front burner. And we are all reflecting on how we analyzed what Callan Colin Kaepernick did and what he meant by everything. You know any ambiguity in statement so I you you can appreciate and respect a guy who comes out, and says something that he believes and I think by all accounts the way that breeze answered the question I think we are assuming that he believes what he said and so. How do you? How do you handle that? Is He dismissing The caw? That's a question. Is he dismissing what Kapernick was trying to do for years ago? That's a question. Does he truly heart of hearts. Want to support. The idea of eliminating police brutality, and all of those things these are questions that many that heard it from an emotional perspective and very quickly came out firing. and. And now there's the component of. Not being educated on minorities that participated in fighting for this country, and then still sought, are still saw an experienced racism and discrimination upon their return, so there's so many tentacles to this from a four second portion of a two minute question. You know what I mean so once Tony Dungy who says say what you believe, and what if if you say things that we know aren't aren't correct aren't factually true. If you say things that reflect an ignorance of what's happening will educate you. This is a time for us is an opportunity for you to get better. Then there's. Shannon Sharpe. Who says you should be out of a job?.

"Everyone it stacey and Cardiff and this is the indicator from planet money today on the show we are shining spotlight on Lancaster. County Pennsylvania We visited the county a couple of months ago because it represents this kind of economic puzzle it is a heavily rural county with a lot of manufacturing jobs and a very low share of of college educated workers these are economic traits that have been devastating to the economies of other similar counties including a lot of other counties in Pennsylvania itself and yet Lincolnshire County is doing great. It's thriving why is that. What makes its economy? Special would have find out. We took a drive through the county with an economist who lives there and economists who happens to specialize in the very trends that have kept lancasters economy resilient this message comes from. NPR sponsor. American Express say yes to payment flexibility and card choices including ones with no annual fee. Don't do you business without it. Rates and fees apply learn more at American Express Dot com slash. No annual fee support also comes from Google fi a phone plan by google. Google fi is made with features that people actually want like unlimited data per line and the freedom to use any smartphone. You want or already have learn more at at five dot. Google dot com on a recent Tuesday morning indicator team was driving through Lancaster. County Pennsylvania With Adam Ozanich and economist. Who lives there? They're these houses are nice by the old mill. Is Dave concerns left back to that road. Can I go right here doing. Yeah okay so we took a few dragging their Cardiff and after passing through some leafy suburbs similar to the one that Adam grew up in we stopped to check out the Mennonite historical Oracle Society which has exhibits about. The county's famous amish. Mennonite past is kind of this is kind of exciting spot right here because you have like outlet shopping shopping rate here but like right there like if you just go like two hundred yards. You've got farms like it's it gets extremely rural extremely remove fast outlet. Shopping and farms is exciting at Lancaster. County has this kind of unique topography. It is a rural county. That is about a two hour Dr West of Philadelphia. It has five hundred forty thousand residents and it's probably best known for its big amish community and its sprawling farms where yes. If you're driving along. On one of the highways you will often spot amish people and horse buggies yet but here are to economic facts about Lancaster. County the start of our economic puzzle. I I it has a big base of manufacturing jobs three decades ago more than thirty percent of the jobs in the county were in manufacturing and then two decades ago those those jobs started disappearing just like in other parts of the country. The jobs rather outsource to countries overseas or replaced by machines. But even now fifteen fifteen percent of all jobs in Lancaster are still in manufacturing. And that's almost double the percentage for the United States as a whole and here's the second fact. The county has a much smaller share of college educated adults than the rest of the country does and if you look at so many other cities and towns and counties in the US with these same economic characteristics they have suffered brutally in the last few decades as the lost manufacturing jobs often were not replaced by really good new jobs in other industries and so this communities ended up getting in kind of hollowed out but Lancaster County has avoided that fate. Yeah exactly that is the puzzle. Lancaster County is doing great. The county's households make more money than people in the rest as to the US. A higher share of the adults in the county have jobs than in the rest of the US and an index published earlier this year by the research company. Gallup found that Lancaster County County ranks eighth out of one hundred and fifty six counties that it surveyed for the wellbeing of its residents and that includes things like good career paths socialize and the health of those residents and you can see the the the way that strong economy sort of translates into overall quality of living. Is there too so the average life expectancy accuracy and Mike Stern is higher as well. So how did Lancaster County pull this off. Part of the answer is that there are other industries that have helped to cushion the blow of last manufacturing jobs ops Princeton's two thirds of the land in the county is farmland so there's a lot of agriculture cattle and poultry and eggs plus. The county includes dozens of small towns and villages ages with Quirky names like Paradise Mountjoy or my personal favorite burden hand Pennsylvania and they are themselves tourist attractions with architecture. Sometimes dating back hundreds in years to when German settlers I moved to the area and then there is Lancaster city which is by far the biggest and actually the only city in Lancaster County. The city city has about sixty thousand residents so only about eleven percent of the people who live in the county live in the city but as we drove into the city from the suburbs. Adam explain saying that the city has an important economic relationship with the rest of the county one that is still kind of evolving back in the eighties and nineties. When Adam was growing up in the Lancaster suburbs outside of the city Eddie? He remembers that the city itself had a lot of crime. And it also wasn't a place you wanted to go in fact you can only remember going there for two reasons. Entire childhood one was to go to the doctor and the other titanic. Downtown movie theater which doesn't exist anymore. I mean you had to write. I'm the king. Yes you did. Yes you had to. But Lancaster city has been revitalised since then. Local business leaders and local politicians have taken steps to attract investment in new businesses says to lower crime to restore replace crumbling buildings and now it has boutique stores gourmet coffee shops and we can confirm this firsthand a fantastic the ethnic dining scene. It's important to do that. LEGWORK reporting yeah now people come downtown to shop they come down to downtown to go to eat. It's it's it's become like sort of a magnet and draw says all this buried economic activity tourism retail restaurants. Construction Agriculture is made possible by a powerful trend that exists in Lancaster. County population growth. That's the key to this puzzle. The size of Lancaster County population has been growing steadily for decades. which it's the exact opposite of what's happening in most Pennsylvania counties and also about half of the counties in the US whose populations have been falling especially rural counties to think about becoming an entrepreneur in that environment is really tough? Because you know you're going to have less customer every year when a city or county has a falling population that usually means it will have have a week less vibrant economy because it means there are just fewer customers but there also fewer workers for businesses to hire so fewer businesses get started it also means the local government collect fewer tax dollars which could be spent on infrastructure. Teachers police officers social programs pensions. This makes place less attractive so then even more people leave and it creates a downward spiral. Adams's Lancaster County has had the opposite. Spiral an upward spiral. A rising population has given the economy. A boost which which itself disincentivize is that people already lived there from leaving it and it brings in new businesses a good example. The Tech Entrepreneur Kyle somber founded the passenger coffee shop in Lancaster City. Where coincidentally we had just stopped? Adam explains so right. Now we're on the east end of the city Eddie and actually the coffee shop that we earlier they Row certain coffee in the cell the beans to other coffee shops and it was started by a local local entrepreneurs and then an entrepreneur who went to Silicon Valley founded few startups sold the startups in sort of moved back here to. Aw do great stuff with the money. He made out there and he's been starting businesses and he's not the only person who had seen knew that as well there couple of reasons that Lancaster's population has continued to climb. I have a lot of kids which is enough to outpace the number of people who pass away who die not to be crude about it. Yes so there's a high birth rate in Lancaster for sure and I think that that is partly due to sort of the mennonite roots around. Here's the people have bigger families here and second immigration Lancaster County. The end especially Lancaster city have a reputation for being welcoming to immigrants and refugees immigrants from all over the world from Vietnam in Somalia in Mexico and and immigration obviously by definition helps population grow. It is literally people who move to an area but immigrants also contribute to the Lancaster economy. Other interesting interesting subtle ways and they are a big part of the reason that Lancaster city in particular has become a unique place. In fact. That is the subject of part two of our spotlight on Lancaster. Mr County which will run next week by the way if you live in a city with an interesting economic lesson.
