And if you're listening at this point and we have a convinced issue maybe check your pulse if you're listening to at this point and you haven't read the series. What are you doing. Oh thank you so much. We love you and thank you for your support and your ears. But y'all know. I know yeah okay jamison exploiting all of this so much better than just puts it into beautiful words and i think we said that is that a lot of things and the themes are not new but she puts them in a way where it feels very urgent and very timely but some of the concepts. She comes up with to explain. It are very new exciting. I really hope the earth is not like this and couple hundred thousand years in the future for hundred thousand years it might be like this and a couple of tens of years maybe not with the with the niners in the tenors the foale cannock eruptions spewing poisonous gasser season the the what was the season of the teeth when everybody went cannibal. I'd rather see a graphic novel than a tv series actually like now. That's that's that's just me. That's just me personally there. Some things that i don't know how they're going to capture visually in a in a video format now i explained it just use tinsel throwing ten slow around party streamers we should also give the the mama the year word. "I have to do. This is what i had to do to survive. I love how. She's she's like really strong. Great fighter amazing tactician just an absolute bad ass but the most powerful moment when she puts on what. I'm calling the lowest warpaint. The black lipstick my third side of her. I am a lowest again. It's like you're i love it. So much else was interesting. The return of mexico. He's back he has thrown lost his legs and he's kind of gathered together with other people who who are kinda paraplegics snuff. He's made running a communist comm- yeah he's still he's still fighting and i was like. Oh my gosh good for you. Because i didn't really think about what happened to all of them. I mean i figured they were all there all supposed to be killed by their by their guardians. I order forty four. We never did find out. Find out what happened to his legs. She says that's his story. Yeah yeah she says it's a clean cut though it wasn't a it wasn't a like a field surgery or something die. Can i have that story. I know i said i know. Is that the last episode. I don't need to know like how they got into this situation. And how the world has its fifth seasons which you want it now now now. Now you given that timmy. Now and now. I'm going to be greedy. I wanna know everything everything In the last book. There's a part that i really liked. What mean just kinda. The whole journey of nelson trying to come to grips with her parents and how they messed up up. Because her mom was like overly strict and her dad was like disneyland. Dad who then ended up killing her brother and hating her. There's something that i really like it. I just think her journey so fascinating He demanded of her to either be his daughter or an origin. She refused to commit existential essential suicide. He refused to suffer an origin to live. Thou shall not suffer a witch to live from the bible very deliberate linkage. And just kind of like it was never going to work and no son tried so hard to appease them to you know i mean i think in the first book. She talked about how she could kind of rain him in by calling him daddy But she said like but only in only in words like she never thought of him as dad ever again and i was like oh that is powerful lesson for a little kid like at this point. She was nine years old is to have to learn. Yes unfair boy. On the fact that she hated her mom you know for being so hard on her and like when she finally comes to realize what her mom was trying trying to do and protect her from a again just so i feel so bad for her. I just want to give her a hug. A you know. I appreciate though that you talked about her. Her recognizing why her mother did what she did and where her mother learned that actually even then even when she real even when she she really understood that this is why and this is what she was doing and even a part of her reno respected what came of that. She didn't forgive her mother for it. She didn't like she didn't consider her her mother. Mother did exactly and i. I really actually appreciate that. Because it's it's really easy in in a story when you're telling a story especially when your when your main protagonist is the one who is hated by someone. It's really easy and you kind of want them to say okay. But i forgive you right now and i appreciate that no tape like understanding is one thing you know forgiveness and Everything's not all going to be roses and butterflies in our like..

"It's being sick a little pet ensuring how the how the light switch works. They wouldn't know there's also laughing at how win when the The people got turned to stone and and they were saying like a whole bunch of them. Were missing to remember this. Yes yes hoa said like we like to stash our food to you. Just have a store. Cash stony body parts here and there like he's trying to think of like a palatable way to put it just laughing like they have all their you know their food stores. Put away you know. In case best season happens and then there's all these buddy statue. Humans used to humans. That are now statues. Put away for for the munchies leader. Hungry so the biggest character chance formation is obviously shefa which is a huge part of the story. It's like you think this is my opinion lurker. But i was kind of like in the first book. Jesus shaath is irredeemable. Like i get that. That's the way his people are like you know he like. It's very clear he's loved every single one of his people but it's an abusive toxic love. And so i was like he's a de-mobilise gamble but i love the character like i i found it compelling and then she fix it all it took was a little dry weight and he not only saw the error of his ways but what matters is he then dedicated his life to fixing it. He genuinely felt bad. Yes about every single kid origin kid that he abused last you know and very much loved nassan as his overt show and was like i did such bad and a half to like make this right. I felt i was so worried and i was waiting for the other. Shoot atrop- on him because it because even the way that he was treating now soon. There's it's there's a fine line between you know between loving and caring and grooming. And i i i was like waiting for the other shoe to drop it like this was like his new method or something like that will. And i'm just so like it was really about the point when they were on the via mo the mike. No he's he's for real there. These cares about. He just cares about her and i was just so happy. I was just so happy. When i finally just accept it like the other shoes this. Yeah we're okay and of course it was also so mad because i'm thinking to myself yet but this is now going to be. The end of shafa is going evil again because earth. It's gonna take him back over and it's gonna be this whole thing. I'm like i did. I enjoy you while you were good while you were here. There's the guardians are very fascinating to me and there's something very fan pyrrhic about them too and like you know that he kind of gets to have release finally because as as described often in this book by him and the is. It's very painful to live forever. Who wants to. But that can't be only one exactly but he finally gets to have released but we learned about the guardians. And there's some point and i could messing this up but when nelson basically says so lake you're basically origins but like you get cheated better flake. Evade there's a disparity in there's an unfairness to it. But wasn't it wasn't it that the guardians were the offspring of origins. That did not have the power did not manifest the power..

"Oh it's so cute. Well you know. I did. I think i did. I think i teased that. The last episode. Where yeah okay. Yeah the chef partner yet. I think it's important though that there was no. There's no couple. No romance no story that at least to the readers is was as special imperfect as that one because it makes that hurt all the more. I mean that that there's two moments that happened in this book that frame the emotional gravity of the rest of the series in my opinion and it is in on death and as death which by the way for four kuranda had a whole conversation last episode about about how. Wow that's one way to start a book and then what do we do in the second book. Mo- okay let's go back to that scene and instead of just finding it. Let's describe exactly how jettison brutal. I'm i understand why you did it. But we're not. We're not cool. Not cool not talking to you right now. It's kind of like guillermo del toro like. Why do you hate little kids so much up.

"Doesn't work without having all of them there. Yeah right just jumped on me and my notes. One of those great examples of humor. And i remember specifically highlighted this for that. I don't have a lot of energy these days because being eaten probably takes a toll that's obviously alabaster aster is my favorite pastors abuser. I love basketball. He's so market back on and on. No no no no teasing but no more. So it's like you can't die two thirds of the way to the first book of three books series and stay my favorite. You gotta make it at least till the end of the second book lose that status and then only you're talked about in third. Oh okay so so. Sandra and i don't talk about books right very much before we actually record when we're gonna talk about it. Imagine but when. Sandra finished the obelisk gate. She mentioned that scene at the end where she sees a stone eater who's strangely made of alabaster it the way it's worded is so beautiful. Like never seen one made of alabaster before and she was so excited to have alabaster as a stone eater. And i'm just sitting here. Who's like at this point. Two thirds of the way through through the third book. I'm like i haven't seen faster yet. I don't know. I know he's off doing his thing that they were unless someone like basically info dumpster whole story to you like we know. Hallway is doing or a son it takes a couple of centuries feeder member yourself. So he's off having his like second life. And i'm so happy for him. I i really like always liked alabama a whole lot and i really fell in love with that character over these last few books seeing where he goes from you know how deeply he loves e sun and like their connection and how much he cares and what he sacrificed and then like leaving the journals which knossos fines i just oh my god. I just love him. I wouldn't say. I love him again and we talked about it last time. It's kind of one of those things where you have all this information but you don't you don't give it up you know and not you're still kinda like it was like but but but always so busy pontificating trying to like to convey like fifty points and then he goes off on tangents and then as he's being turned to stone that seems to be like multiple times a hundred but There's just nobody like him. there's just no he's definitely one of a kind and it's nice to finally see that he does truly love in. It's not a romantic love. But he does love issan ears and that she in return respects. Yeah you know what he was trying to do. And and and sees what hard job it was because even when she knows everything at that point she doesn't really give it up just natural. I mean you can't. Yeah you know people wouldn't understand. Once she understands the danger of it she realizes that if she just says oh yeah. This is the thing that you can do right. Every origin would would just kill themselves themselves. Kill the world. even more I truly believe there so mates like they're just not in a romantic way but it's just like they just have that deep lake once in a lifetime connection that people find it doesn't have to be romantic can be platonic and and they're like family and there's a part where when he's really towards the end she's kinda cuddling up near him and lake remembering like the good old days and it just like. Oh it just made me emotional. Just oh had feels. Ed feels alabaster side so the earth is a character established now and it's not just them like saying you know because they kind of made it sound like very mythological..

"Do better today. A little more fresh. Yes yes my memory ain't what it used to be. I mean it so it's going to be all three of us. It is absolutely enough obsession so much. So i'm i'm listening to the first book now not as obsessively as you went back. Yes i've gone now. I am not look back back-to-back tobacco it's not exclusive. Like you know when i was listening to these three books on audio book there were podcasts. Were not part of my rotation anymore. It was just this. This is now like you know. I'll i'll listen to like a half hour of it. As part of my commute. Listen to podcasts. Or whatever then that but yeah it is it. Is that special really sweet. Which is kind of what. I did the first time. You're doing a little quicker than i did. That's really sweet. Scott that you're like so in love with it like you know and that's kind of thing that happens with us book people's it's almost like a movie or tv show like we really love something like how frequently we go back to it. I'll say the closest thing that i can compare this to as far as my absolute just adoration for it is a three dark crown series. Yes it is. It is like that level for me so this bookstore has changed your life. I would say that. This book series made an impact. Yeah nice nice. I don't know. I was just thinking when the tv show comes out her. We're gonna watch it altogether. Are we gonna come..

Yeah you're beautiful trauma world tour. Gosh i missed tours. I miss live performances. I miss concerts but The part i. I got to watch the first part of it. I loved that it was showing. How how you balanced life is a performer. A wife a mama a boss an amazing performer but woven in every bit and i. I'm assuming these are just people stocking you following you around. That are watching you your kids. Your life is so interwoven. Interconnected and so few people have the courage to do that. Have take your daughter to work day or take your kid to work day. I'm like what the hell one day seriously. I know i've i mean i feel i. I feel just lucky. I feel lucky. That i get the. I always wanted to run away and join the circus since the now on the ringleader and my kids are little kids and i have a fantastic village. I'd say my my number one I guess the thing. I'm the most proud of is that i attract for whatever reason magical human being and my kids get to grow up with these people and see what it's like in real time to follow your dreams and to be passionate about something that might be a little bit outside of the box. Whatever on the supposed to be. And here's the cool thing though. They'll never know what that box looks like. You have given them this. Joyous joy filled magical beautiful passionate experience called life or they'll search for that box for over. I don't think there's any chance of that happening because once you've tasted the high wire once you've spun around like you do. How can you ever comfortably. You know live in a box that's true. I don't think anything that has been touched by. Pink could ever comfortably fit in a small box. I don't think the people that have been touched by you professionally. Who worked with you. I don't think they could ever go back to being normal. And what a what a legacy that.

I remember when i gave birth to my firstborn whose who's close in age to you. Now i remember holding him and looking at him and going. I didn't know how much i was loved. Until i had him and went. Whoa if god if the universe bleeds that am capable of raising the most perfect style. I've ever met in my life and on and i knew that in the instant he was born. I knew that our our souls were meant to be together. I was like oh my gosh. Everything just changed. Everything changed forever. You sound like a really really soulful mama from like you. I am really really really blessed. Mama an i right now at my house upstairs i came. I have a studio in my house. I came downstairs. I have Three of my grandkids and four of my my kid kids who are still young still at home all playing in a teeny tiny little plastic kiddy pool in the backyard. And you're fixing it. Well i i was up there for over an hour and i was so excited. Tend to come to talk to you in meet you and just tell you that you have inspired pink so many people but especially young women with your tenacity and your forcefulness and your unapologetic strength. I actually really apologize a lot. I believe her in our apology. Only when it's warranted. No but i'm saying back in the past back in the day women who were strong emotionally strong physically strong determined or called the word and and it felt like they we we because i started this journey in the early seventies we had to navigate waters where we constantly were apologizing for simply having a dream. And when you burst on the scene it was like you're like magic. You like peter pan and a beautiful strong women's body. You know like your magical while i mean. I know that to be true. I mean my both of my mom. My mom and my stepmom were both nurses then and I i have asked them many times with this your dream and they said well if there weren't a lot of choices for women But they both are nurses and heart. But it's interesting. It's like i came out. I came out with sharp sharp claws and ideas and I've just. I've just was born in that way and i was raised by a really strong dad who believed in change and change with possible and no. I couldn't be any other way. I i love seeing people just live truly who they are. They're truth and that's your new project. your new songs the lyrics. That's the core if you were to put it in a pot and boil it down to the essence of the the truth. That's what you just said to live your truth to live your life. Authentically is what your music is about. It's what your movie is about. It's what your life is about. And i appreciate the fact that you don't just live that way. You encourage so many other people. Pink to live that way i do. I know how. I know the price that comes with. It's really scary and vulnerable and.

"It's interesting, but not concerning. I think is worth work. But I don't really think very often about the world beneath my feet as a source of stress here in New York City. And I don't know how much you do either an enormous day. I mean, what going here in New York City. Yeah. To this. I I am fascinated by volcanoes. I always have been I grew up in flat seismically relatively inactive country. There's nothing that's really inactive but relatively inactive. And I grew up in Brooklyn in mobile, Alabama where volcanoes were like the last thing you needed to worry about. And so I was fascinated by learning about hot spots, and by people in California, Californians, fascinate me. Because I'm like, why would you like I don't I am. I am a typical New Yorker in some ways, and there's a part of me that's like, but it's going to break off, and it's going to be its own country. Maybe if it's Rives, I know, but you know, like, I have California friends. I don't know how many of you were around for the little earthquake that we had maybe was almost ten years ago at this point. But it was ten years quick. I think it was like four point five or something and it was way far away from here. And so. You know, basically, I was at work that day and my boss came running in and she stood in the doorway. And she was like it's an earthquake. We've got to get out of here. And I was like I was just the subway. But you know, she had enough experience to know that it we actually was not the subway, and she got us all out of the building. We were all standing around even she was like, oh no line at five guys now. So none of us were freaked out by this earthquake. But it was still kind of enough to get us out of the building. And we talked to people from California, and they were just like, really? Y'all were scared of you noticed it. So. Oh, so living with constant morality of you could blow up at any given moment to me seems odd. But you know, it's fascinating. Well, I wanna talk about living without FM morality a little bit later, but surest so you decided to write a story about the planet being the monster. Where did you start with your research? Did you just go to the library? Did you? Okay. So the first thing I needed to do was understand volcanoes. So I had a friend who was a dating assize. Malla gist are Mexican. Yeah. And I took him out for coffees picked his brains. I joined a list serve for was vulcanologists or geophysicist. Oh, goodness. But I joined a list serve, and I did the usual science fiction writer thing of saying. Hi, I'm a I'm a writer. I'm interested in coming up with, you know, with blah, blah, blah type world, can you answer some super basic questions about you know, seismology and so forth. Can you recommend basically like volcanoes for dummies books that I can check out things like that? Because I had no background in in the sciences in this field. And so that was really hopeful. And in addition to that I had a few years before I had gone to a NASA funded workshop cold launchpad, so that workshop was actually about astronomy and had nothing to do with seismology. But among other things we talked about title forces. And so things that that impacted seismic activity on on various planets and just stuff like that. Was was always interesting to me. And this past presidents day, we invited vulcanologists geologists and in cage Emerson herself to a lava hot party in New York City. We learned scientifically accurate way to play. The floor is lava we made disaster kits and busted volcano myths with volcanologist Janine crip ner and Cy arts producer, Christy Taylor. Interviewed in K Jemison about writing the fifth season getting up close and personal with volcanoes for research, and what's in her disaster preparedness kit, and by the way, this is an after hours events. So the language is occasionally a bit spicy enjoy. Hello everyone. Welcome to voice the volcano. So we've heard some really fantastic stories about the science of volcanoes and geologic events, I'm going to welcome our book nerd Christine Taylor back to the stage, everyone, please one more round of applause. Hello. Welcome back. Hi, it's good to be here. Yeah. You have sort of the pleasure of doing sort of the last thing, we're going to do altogether. Yeah. Well, I mean, we came we learned about volcanoes. We learned about society and volcanoes. But what if you lived in a world that was always waiting for the big one are very last special guest built an entire world of disaster prepar on this planet that she writes in the fifth season. It moves a lot this land like an old man lying restlessly a bed it heaves and size puckers and farts, yawns and swallows naturally. This lands people have named it the stillness. It is a land of quiet and bitter irony. We're gonna talk more about that bitter irony and that land with Nora Jemison, author of the fifth season and its sequels the obelisk gate and the stone sky. I'm going to keep talking about you. She is the first author in history to win three consecutive best novel Hugo awards. Also, nebula.

"More. Now on our top story. The president set to meet with the leader of North Korea for a second time. Donald Trump junior reacts on Fox News. I think he's going to do what he does best. I mean, he's going to go shit for the American people. I mean, he's made incredible strides in progress in terms of just eliminating some of this nuclear proliferation testing that's been going on. So much stuff. I mean, so sick of watching the experts who've been dealing with North Korea for sixty years ago. Wait a minute sixty years, you guys never even got a meeting. You never even got in the room with the boss. He's done that in under two years.
