contributor to show now yes and got a situation happening here yeah it's good to have you here I need friends at this time you really do I mean I feel bad for you so really hard here's a situation with teff is that when this thing started we I had someone on from the animal shelter one county and they're doing and I thought was a great idea humane association him as a senator Warren County and Hey listen we are letting people foster dogs because you know we can't be around each other and we can't be at the yeah look we're gonna close everything down what we do these animals we just can't you know throw a hundred pound bag of kibble in Maryland dole it out over the next two weeks we have people so good folks like warm hearted people like my friend takes here says I'll take the dog so she goes the shelter she picks up Pringles in Pringles is a we don't know beagle mix sort of cervical Jack Sherman the minute pet co and I you know chop it up every week when I pick up his food I've now had a week longer than I should of and you know give me a sign so he's a little bland if you look on Instagram at the tiff potter and maybe if your dog expert you can help me figure out what he is yeah but you'll see a really cute but he's definitely a dog I know that I can confirm dog swim for interval that's about it yes so burst under storm last night so how do you do I'm gonna guess not good he was just confuse if you set the I I live in mount Adams so though I mean I don't I don't know where you are those those alarms reach right the sirens yeah I was confused but the thunder itself was not he knew when I took him out to go to the bathroom before bed he was like girl we need that I'm gonna go pee and I'm gonna go and I'm gonna hide we should not be out as Irma so should bring pain Pringles in of the sooner once while in a cute dog it is his he's poor guys are scared everything though he like literally how I'm sure he's just scared he has separation anxiety and I'm the only one he only human he's known for the last month because I haven't been able to socialize him another other human right right except to the dog park which the wind close last week so we are we're struggling in that department I feel you if you're a dog owner out there but he's just had some separation anxiety other than that he's phenomenal yeah and it's tough we was so years ago my kids are real small weeks ago we got a kick out of a dog so we foster with opted a golden retriever beautiful dog but it had a little separation as I recall like in a big deal not only did the eat out of its crate like yours is doing it right yeah well I I don't know what the hell do they suck so I built a crate in the basement and I put him in this crate he ate through that created an eight we came back in the eight through the basement door and started digging to clot to dig like it's a whole under the door shut outside so he ruined the carpet drinks were all broken in like twelve hundred dollars in damage in my house oh my gosh really yeah for a boy with a dog like with the separation anxiety so they tell us what we should get a second dog keeping company Michael what if that dogs crazy now I'm going to right now I got to work to criminals wonder why would I do that when a stupid so anyway with Pringles you fostered Pringles you got the dog electron I'll take care of that I'll return and I said to what I say that's how they get checked me now because there's no way after two three weeks now I've kept them a week longer than I was not one person has contacted me out I've called several times and gone directly to voicemail we got rid of the dogs are going to be opening more fixed it truly this is great cincy lifestyle my girlfriend Allie Mar and she does a really awesome segment on and honestly I really need him to have a home because and if I swear to god I can see Jimmy sandy in my left side I pulling up Sarah McLaughlin right now in the hearing kill a in the arms of an angel I am going to be so here's the thing and she's now she said listen I'm I'm I'm mostly I'm strong she's a very strong woman Texas but the dog's been part of your life you haven't been allowed to be around people so you've got a dog that the you know as you often say that dogs always up my **** about something he's always he chewed up cables easy Daseke air car it's crazy because dogs need new wired everything is dogs chewing up but I kinda love the dog but I love them and I don't know I really don't know what to do so I'm thinking of returning him tomorrow but I haven't done social "Know we are twenty four hours later still trying to figure out what happened at this rate New Hampshire will be the first in the country one engine Iowa whole process to the drug plans now we took your gut punch Joe Biden took a gut punch in many rounded on Bernie and mayor peak cut fourteen a senator Sanders is a nominee for the party every Democrat in America up and down the ballot blue states red states purple states CZ and easy destruction competitor once every Democrat we'll have to carry the label senator senators chose for himself chosen for himself he calls and I don't criticize he calls himself a democratic socialist he really saying that Obama Biden administration was a failure just say it out loud I have great respect for who the service in this nation but I don't believe it's a race to be just straight up with you for this party to nominate someone who's never held office hire the mayor of a town of a hundred thousand people in Indiana so Jack Sherman the gloves are off but but the punches are feeble right well one of the punches are people but at that the gloves are definitely off and I listen I think I think there's one there's one thing that we need to a couple big city to take out of those comments number one there were people there were members of Congress in twenty sixteen who did not run as Donald Trump damn of Republicans rather and the one so the idea that you have to Kerry somebody else's label might or might not be true we don't know that to be true because it wasn't true in the past Republicans in district many of of many districts that did not vote for the president did not like Donald Trump twenty sixteen that's number one number two I I do think and I I I hear this all the time from Democrats that they are worried that Joe Biden is the twenty twenty first of Hillary Clinton and all of these issues the full reason issue whether or not the sun did anything illegal or bad let's leave the fact aside for a second the image of it the the brand of it is not good for Republicans for Democrats not good for Joe by and I think that is always lingering here I do and and and bare feet is that it ginger chop of talking about it thank you The Washington if your and he's not he's been in Washington a long time and that is to a lot of people that I spoke to coal works for hi this is a a a it's not an issue that is really helpful for to fight it now let's talk about mayor Pete burning as it Bernie as in Bernie makes a burning message it started out running as a moderate used to come on this show go on fox talk to everyone and be them nice midwestern guy then he went laughed media matters gone on his case for going on the center right show that he won't do it anymore I don't think he can win from where he is I don't think he's a lefty he's pretending to be one does he have traction beyond his nice from beyond that that famous quote he's everybody every grandparents idea of what a presidential candidate should look like I don't know the answer to that I do think you're gonna have trouble getting through South Carolina with the black vote is extraordinarily important in a state like Nevada state like California is the user space where are already populations are are are very big and I I don't know that you can get but I think burning can't meanwhile.

"To the ravens in answer to our question about the most impactful NFL trade of two thousand nineteen the defense has a totally different personality and swag with him honestly if you look at other trade the made in two thousand nineteen I would say that it's probably the ones on the defensive side of the ball that have made the greatest impact I think all right my call about that today Gary's listening in Jacksonville welcome to after hours CBS sports radio good morning Amy always a pleasure thank you Armen quite understand that a lot of coal or wood Lamar gestures ages and if you do a very easily and the P. or not but only the you just don't have a lot of experience and so he's kind of playing go beyond his wisdom and beyond odd in terms of his starting experience but ya what you expect from a guy who so early in his career he has a lot of but you're not going to do with the use of the young people peering out though so I'm sorry he said he was more impressed by the fact that he was twenty two years old I agree with her okay not a factor IT worker were explained by him but well you know what he's not a talk show host he's just kind of like you total of our goals but what what I wanted to comment on well you locally down here sure constable of fury we usually questioning the a passionate fan base you know talk about possible you know came to London in part of it asked about the possibility of the Jack Sherman is made the second game in London in the future well I think you sure look in the mirror maybe because of the fact that this is a staggering to suit statistic Jack have drawn to the top ten ten of the last eleven years as a fan base you can only be your head against a wall so often in the then what happens when you're done by your head against the wall then what happens you find new team Meryl bar for charge more than any other team the drugs drugs than the next closest three please refer all this is is responsible to put out a teaser product to know what what when you keep the same for all others let's do a terrible job any other year would have been far you look at the job called wills done with the draft picks in the first couple rounds he's been god awful in the short term the they need to put a better product out for the fans to be starts with the front office okay thanks Gary June Ramsey whether draft picks is tied to three years ago and I mean I I mean I get it it's hard it's a hard guy inexact science and and when they don't pan out but draft picks are only part of the equation I mean direct draft picks have to fit into a system they have to fit into a structure that's already there they you know they they can make you better shore but again it's an inexact science in who's going to work out who's not which guys are going to stay healthy which ones aren't you know how they're going to perform when given the opportunity so I don't I mean the jaguar certainly have had some bleak years but they were nasty championship game not that long ago it's funny it's funny to even think about that now right with Blake Bortles with Blake Bortles citing this weekend I feel like I saw that I didn't play portal come in for a snap with the rams just one it was this one I think he may have had like a yard it was a running play is a fairly Blake Bortles on the field it's after hours with Amy lord here on CBS sports radio I did have a chance to play the audio so maybe we'll do it on our next show but some funny stuff with coach Popovich as Tony Parker's number nine was retired by the San Antonio Spurs and it's funny to hear coach pop in these moments where he's not dealing with the media directly and he lets his guard down because it's it's the the real coach pop that bad so we don't get to see very often and obviously his players are so incredibly loyal to him the way that they the way that they believe in and trust him and and help a lot of times they stay there for the length of their careers if they have that opportunity and so is really need to hear Tony Parker's comments about could pop of age but also coached pop pretending like he didn't even know the number nine within the rafters so rafters I say rafters are raptors yet rafters the moment we don't I don't know what you're going to feed I'll look which is the moment where for a second there I thought wait a minute no it's raptors nope that's a basketball team Hey it was a really long at the end of the show see what I mean about human throw up we say the darndest things not just kids anyway what would try to get to that on the next show because it was good stuff and elsewhere in sports outside of the NFL certainly the rookie of the years getting it they're getting their awards there hardware on on Monday was cool I need Capper for P. Alonso and the New York Mets in the fifty three home runs but I like how his video address to the fans on the Mets Twitter that was more about hate next years gonna be special next year we're gonna do this thing next year we're going to take this all the way and so that was kind of cool I love his enthusiasm is energy your dad Alvarez a unanimous selection in the American League of the awards thirty voters that's kind of cool and he already has a taste of the World Series right so good stuff Major League Baseball in its award season we are in that home between a football weekend subway back tonight for the.

"The moon the moon is it also greetings everyone was saying in Israel and China coming up in about an hour doctor Michael or and as I promised you on Twitter last night and this morning on the show previous and that was president trump in Kentucky last night in a massive rally with massive applause lines I'm joined by Jack Sherman but politico playbook this morning to kick off and I got to start their Jake I came back from a ten day vacation in Spain and I found a beltway completely disconnected from what the world's talking about and I've often found that when I go out and about I'm going to Tampa this week going to California next week that I do think about way is so turn in on itself it's completely clueless about places like Kentucky where the president last went last night and the crowd city draws and I think that New York times in a poll yesterday woke some Democrats up in my right you know I I we've talked about this before you but the one thing that I found and I went out and talked about my book with Anna Palmer my co author please look at that we went to places and people would say when it went over public computer finally turned their back on trump and look at them and said you must not understand that there's an entire country that voted for Donald Trump and loves Donald Trump and he is the single I mean in my lifetime he is the single most popular Republican politician that I've ever seen by far without a doubt so I do think there is that disconnect around the country it may be that does he didn't do that that way media a little bit because because the bell immediately to hate Donald Trump let let me play for you what exploded on Twitter yesterday the nats nationals this city joy of many of baseball fans heart I'm an Indian fans I'm still in mourning a Browns fan which means I'm in perpetual morning although we'll come back Ryan Zimmerman of the nationals at the White House yesterday cut number fourteen Mister president me my teammates first of all like to thank you for having us here this is was an incredible honor that I think all of us so we'll never we'll never forget and would also like to thank you for keeping everyone here safe in our country and god and his teammate got from the manga hat and all that stuff Jake I just laughed through the whole day and trump the other guy I can't member the other guy's name who got behind it was Kurt Suzuki the star catcher I mean I I it for many people in the media was an embarrassing fall but to be honest with you because hello back with the fairer sex interesting to reporters I mean first of all I'm the biggest national spent on planet earth probably I least I consider myself that I could tell you that I've never really taken an interest in my political bite my team athletes like or dislike it has nothing to do I mean first of all I'm almost speechless at it to be honest with you because I think it was so great I don't even care about the National League they don't even play nine people on a side that you got a free out every three an insight I don't care about the nats but I just thought the reaction was so telling Jake I thought so too and I I don't want to get out of one of the different people but people said on Twitter you know they've burned a hole reservoir of good will why I mean they liked these guys like president trump hello again it goes back to my first point a lot of people like threat to the truck and I yeah I was I was the final by that reaction to be honest with you because I it added core naive I mean I I just can't understand what people haven't come to the to grips with the fact that he's the president and people like him I mean I II might not be everybody's Cup of tea but people like him and people obviously vote for it and many of those people play for professional sports yeah I mean I they they read Michelle Goldberg well I've been a al Sharpton before I know she's a fine I left wing columnist and she's completely unhinged by trump as many people in the media completely Hey though he's a criminal you should be in jail a key should be impeached yesterday all that kind of thing they just don't get it now here's the strategic choice before Mitch McConnell that if not play book but I want you to think on this there are three rows ahead of it there is peremptorily peremptory dismissal of any charge from the house citing the procedural due process flaws in the house there is an extended deep dive into everything with the president calling witnesses up to and including hunter Biden Joe Biden anyone he wants in a full blown trial of the last three years and then there's the middle road which is to do the Clinton thing in ninety nine bring up the charges the house managers go blah blah blah blah the Senate votes are not two thirds and it's over I think the only way the truck gets hurt is that the Republicans take that last pass if they peremptorily dismiss the charges for it they go deep into what's been going on against trump for three years trump wins and the constitution wins with route one trump wins with route three what do you think Mitch McConnell's gonna do John Cornyn yesterday said number two but then he began to lean towards number one what do you think Jack Sherman I don't think number one is likely to be honest with you I don't think that it is and McConnell has signaled that number one is not likely and he has said that he intends to to to conduct a trial which to me would seem that he does not intend to bring up the charges and dismiss them you know I I do think that politically there have been demi even Democrats concede that they have not handled this this phase of the of the impeachment process well but I don't think the Senate could bring him up in this mess and I don't think it's terrible for McConnell or Senate Republicans I think that they will do some combination of two or three years maybe somewhere in the middle but I do not think they'll bring up the charges in the media we dismiss them but that's Mike that at this point I mean this is a moving target we don't know when this is going he died in the house we don't know when the Senate committee get the the articles which by the way according to the Senate rules they have to move to trial VDO Lee any day besides the Sunday so I think I I I just I I think it's a little early to know but I don't think they'll bring up the charge that immediately dispatched now I I want to recall for you that McConnell need only take a page from the playbook authored by Mitch McConnell to change his mind here and that played a key role in the aftermath of the school Leah untimely death of justice Scalia which is to assert the primacy of the majority in the Senate and from and John Cornyn so you know you had an argument here because the problem is that which gets rewarded gets repeated Adam Schiff sham show trial has done great damage to the house's reputation with with secret hearings with ex parte contacts with the whistle blower with a whole different laundry list of of terrible mistake ship made and if the Senate doesn't want to be trapped in the analysts politicized impeachments by majorities becoming more and more intemperate they got to draw the line somewhere and say we're not just in a if you're going to expect this told the trial you've got to have a pre trial proceeding that has constitutional stature and standing consistent with the Fourteenth Amendment guarantee of due process which by the way apply to impeachment the people may not know what that was passed in the aftermath of the original constitution so that due process guarantee applies to everything they were due process the Fifth Amendment I think McConnell could be persuaded this is the way to go J. F. has have you talked about it you talk to everybody I don't know anyone talked about what what what kind of finances directly and he's again he has grown cold water on the fact that he would just bring up the charges and dismiss them I'd be good at that directly but but you're right he but Connolly this is subject to change of mind and it does so I want to use the word brazenly but it's not what I need but does so without hesitation and that's our goal he is bald and people and and key Democrats eight important public it's a lot of for it right so that's kind of the that's kind of the reality that little colonel works under and I just don't I don't know I I don't think I think politically a lot a lot of Republicans would probably like to just dismiss them I just at this point it does not seem likely all right so the last thing I got out to ask about a Sean Spicer making it through another round of financing with the start look I tweet out to remind people to vote for Sean because everybody thinks he got a raw deal right everybody thinks both the media and the president you know the guy's a good spokesman he did a good job but there was a lot of there was a lot of craziness at the beginning of the trump administration that goes down to being a rookie and it happened to Bill Clinton happened to George W. bush it happened to Barack Obama happen to Donald Trump to and Sean Spicer has got a lot of friends not just in this town but across the country are you surprised that he's hanging on the strength of Americans votes well no because because president trump leading that people ought to vote for the president trump has sixty billion followers that letter so I I it seems that that's probably with what I did with it because what I again I don't watch the thing with the stars so I I do I've never seen a minute of it my life's never seen a bit of it either but I I what I've been told so it is not the best dancers so I'm not sure it's completely up the level but you know what good for if I guess if you want to be a professional dancer that I think you've got his break I think he's having fun I've talked to a friend of his say you having more fun than he's had since since winning an election night and twenty sixteen and so god bless him and the voters of dancing with the stars I've never seen a minute of it either Jake Jake Sherman from politico where the play book every morning ought to arrive and they help to die on the book the author without a Palmer also yet to go yet thank you my friend coming right back with headline doctor Michael ward from Israel the bottom the our you know our American this portion of.

"Welcome back to you at Jack Sherman politico joins me on this Friday wrap up of the news Jake it's been a week of recriminations just let read Peggy Noonan's column in the Wall Street journal about moon river just telling people about my listening late into the night of the Indians twins game being called by Tom Hamilton both of us sort of nostalgic for August of the past where you didn't do anything except listen to baseball games and music and it this week has been anything but baseball games and music does it get any better well I will say I'm happy my Washington national sweat the good giant before a big series in New York and that this weekend so that's where my focus okay well see that's that's what some are supposed to be about right pennant races that's right well I I your mouth to god's ears I mean listen the president right now today is going to his first Walker is is called complex and that Mr Jersey after a series of fund raisers we'll see you know what to expect with the president's away because as you know he likes to call a lot of people when he gets all sorts of ideas in his head and he you know he likes being away but he doesn't it's for action sometimes we lay out at the top of playbook this morning about the gun debate a few important points number one if you put together a bunch of things that happened yesterday number one hello see apple McConnell to call the Senate back into session not gonna happen McConnell going on the radio in Louisville and saying that background checks will be in the discussion of course it'll be in the discussion in the discussion now that the colonel stating fact but if you put all the pieces together only one thing one person matters in the gun debate it's not that close it's not Chuck Schumer not Connell if Donald Trump and it if Donald Trump W. isn't billeting amazing ability of bell to bend where his party has been for many years and give people political cover you did it was spending eat that within a number of other issues that you were to embrace anything about guns his party by and large many people with Walmart so I I'm waiting to see where the president land up waiting lance over this vacation now Jake that got to disagree with one part of your analysis okay is the only person who matters if Donald Trump in fact in Ohio Michael DeWine backed up by his conservative lieutenant governor are pushing for a stop order loss severe threat order protection law similar to the one that Doug Ducey is pushing for an Arizona there are thirty three governors who matter and their state legislatures because most effective deterrent of this sort of heinous crime comes at the state level bite laws passed by state legislatures to enforce stop orders are called red flags but a lot of gun rights activists hate that term because it's all it's too encompassing and Busey into whiner pursuing very structured very carefully drafted constitutional moves I think they matter a lot they don't get as much attention Doug do seniors on or Mike the one in awhile but they ought to yeah I would just talk about on the federal level but you're absolutely right he plus our huge and and it seems that many states are work that many municipality than I was just talking about on the federal level Donald Trump is is going to be the person to watch here because you can get people to fall in line you can consult with people obviously like Lindsey Graham and Mitch McConnell and and Chuck Grassley people look at the net the universe for the very long time but Donald Trump has the ability to get his party behind or anything good bad or indifferent and that's the person to watch and listen I I've statistically book all week and I believe that we could be ten crises from now by September and they hopefully they're not done quite he's but this might be in the public consciousness over the next couple if you saw we had a a couple of near misses yesterday in a Walmart with the gun and the local policeman stopped and then there's another and then we had four people stabbed to death in Orange County California my own home buyer they're not getting the same amount of tension as twenty two dead now Paso nine dead in Dayton but it's violence in the country is a systemic deeply rooted problem check I am curious about back to my question about taking a break does the grinding twenty four seven four season political world help or hurt the ability of Americans to deal with these endemic deep problems well you would have to say the coach right and I'm not sure if I'm not sure of course is the right word but I mean we're always in the campaign season were always and we're always in the middle of some sort of political maelstrom and now we're in the middle of a of a a political campaign season the primary season where everybody's trying to dump on the president and and get to each other's left and right and all that stuff so you would have to imagine that this is not helpful I don't know that there's any way to avoid considering it's just the political calendar but listen and I told I said this in the show before I believe it every single member of Congress almost to a person goes home to an electorate that is more extreme or more partisan than they are so the yeah that's just a fact of gerrymandering the fact of where we are as a country and I don't know that there's any way to avoid that so I'm not sure that's the best environment could compromise I just don't I'm in a separate from here I think that what we see is a political late the three percent problem is when I began to caught the three percent on the right in the three percent on the left to use Twitter who shop on Mitch McConnell's lawn or demonstrate against immigrants I mean that three percent of the hard core base that is out there screaming twenty four seven they are the problem I think and they don't let this feeling that'll relax relax I'm not sure I agree I agree in theory but I just think that I can't tell you I had it was talking to a member of Congress who retired the other day who reminded me of the pay he said which is everybody goes home and they get yelled at whether or not all Republicans go home get yelled at whether or not supporting trump even more so that's it's just it's just a sign of how how partisan the was that elected complaining because I actually got an hour brought in the country I've been in Georgia and Virginia beach and back in California for a couple of days and the country actually doesn't reflect cable news and DC it it actually goes about its life pretty well they listen to the ball games like I did last night they they go to their doctors a point like Peggy Noonan like you there covering the nats but I do know your natural and Jacob that you would be a wholly counter big big I had did you see the Browns crush the Redskins last night I did see that I'm not a redskin fans okay use professional football stepbrother huge that I am a huge Browns fan an Indian fan so I thought that's what we should be doing let me turn to Twitter with you Mitch McConnell breaks his shoulder he's harassed in public issues to Eddie yes a Kerry detail but group of twenty to thirty people often called the mob sometimes called the demonstration violin in its rhetoric voodoo do all that stuff shop on is want somebody takes a video of it and they post it McConnell's campaign team re tweets it to demonstrate to America the lunacy of the laughed and Twitter shuts down the McConnell campaign account this is just stupid as rocks on the part of Twitter because it seems quite obviously a double standard and it seems quite obviously intended to stop exposure of that most Americans would believe out of bounds acceleration of the political cycle does Twitter hang on stubbornly to what is a stupid stupid stupid position J. quarter they move Twitter needs to explain because eight eight if there is a perception whether it's reality reality or not I don't know because they're not a public utility but they there's a perception that they're very uneven with stuff and you've already in the last eighty an hour at the the Senate committee Republican Senate committee and the NRCC the house Republican committee have said they're not going to buy any ads on Twitter still this he met you counted back online I don't know the specifics as well they should I've I've let the about the issue but I think what's clear is Twitter needs to set some some some guidelines here because there's all sorts of disgusting things on Twitter and stuff I see all the time that that comes into my feet that I don't I don't see Twitter taking action on that so I would I think you eight they need to explain more about what's going on yeah this is business Silicon Valley is completely left wing dominated by left wing activist and run for left wing purposes by people claim they're not political and as you just said they're not a public utility but you keep censoring the Senate Majority Leader and you're going to end up a public utility last question a group or is back in the news he's up at politico Josh Gerstein has Astoria the I. releases Bruce or interview reports I have my own assessment of the what do you think of these Bruce or three tears I think I you know what in one instance in the over the last couple years that I don't need to doctor question I did not stop but I I really do think the lawsuit and the people were suing the government over the file yeah you guys gonna be fascinating most fascinating because they're gonna have to go with the discovery and they're gonna be forced to answer all sorts of questions provide all sorts of it I'm not sure how that's going to turn out many people are lawyers the thought about this I think this is this is a circus not going away and I don't need the circuit court of late but this issue the trunk person the FBI trump verses the courses that you believe it's hilarity senior leadership Spygate is what we call it on the show and and hash tag spy gate is rising very quickly the one thing we haven't talked about this is interesting Jake the US is close to a peace deal with the Taliban according to time magazine Kimberly does are good reporter and has the details of Zalmay callous aids conversation with the Taliban and and how they're moving forward we've been in a war for nineteen years of these people nineteen year don't you think this is your headline I mean why is this not the front page of every I have my theory what he thought because I think the the US government has sought to tamp this down and said has said that they're not as close as people believe what they are it if they've done enough to inject that skepticism I'm not skeptical of that report in time but I am I am listening to the US government which has said that this is not as close as people believe it to be so I I think we should pay attention to these reports and look into a little bit more I don't know that the there's been much more than that and that work but it'll be something to watch and you're right the electorate hi performance and and realizes we can work for about two decades finally the Wall Street journal editorial uncle trump to the naval rescue it's American ships escorting everyone through the straits of Hormuz the new secretary of defense's ordered a top to bottom review do you think that foreign affairs is going to play a role in this domestic political cycle greater than it is been playing this week of violence in this week of gun control I personally do but what is Jack Sherman of political effect I think that if the president talks about it may be a welcome that the president had does not talk about his successes for some reason instead spends much of it and talk about it then okay well I got to get this and by the way last story over political Andrew Yang surpassed bail in the Iowa poll he qualified for the fall debates how bout that the biggest bizarre thing is people thinking the data could be John Cornyn who was all the more popular than ten Kerr Ted Cruz is in the state of Texas I'm not sure they can or can't but he didn't detect cruise is not very popular of course don pointed to the public and the for a very long time and John is a good friend to show he's gonna win Jake Sherman always a pleasure femme on Twitter check German help your about moon river just telling people about my listening late into the night of the Indians twins game being called by Tom Hamilton both of us sort of nostalgic for August of the past where you didn't do anything except listen to baseball games and music and this week have been anything but baseball games and music does it get any better well I will say I'm happy might Washington national swept the separate the good giant before a big series in New York yeah the met this weekend so that's where my focus is okay well see that's that's what summer supposed to be about right pennant races that's right well I I your mouth to god's ears I mean listen the president right now today is going to his first Walker is hope is golf complex and that Mr cruise the after stirring the fund raisers we'll see you know it's a mixed bag with the president's away because as you know he likes to call a lot of people when he gets all sorts of ideas and this that and he you know he likes being away but he doesn't it's for action sometimes we lay out at the top of playbook this morning about the gun debate a few important points number one if you put together a bunch of things that happened yesterday number one hello see asking McConnell to call the Senate back into session not gonna happen Connell going on the radio in Louisville and saying that background checks will be in the discussion of course it'll be in the discussions in the discussion now that the colonel stating fact but if you put all the pieces together only one thing one person matters in the gun debate it's not that close it's not Chuck Schumer not Connell if Donald Trump and it if Donald Trump drop the usability amazing ability to tell to bend where his party has been for many years and give people political cover you did it with spending he thought it would in a number of other issues if you were to embrace anything about guns his party by in large many people with Walmart so I I'm waiting to see where the president land that I'm waiting lance over this vacation now Jake that got to disagree with one part of your analysis okay is the only person who matters if Donald Trump in fact in Ohio Michael DeWine backed up by his conservative lieutenant governor are pushing for a stop border loss severe threat order protection law similar to the one that Doug Ducey is pushing for an Arizona there are thirty three governors who matter and their state legislatures because most affected of deterrent of this sort of heinous crime comes at the state level by laws passed by state legislatures to enforce stop orders are called red flags but a lot of gun rights activists take that term because it's all it's too encompassing and do see and a whiner pursuing very structured very carefully drafted constitutional moves I think they matter a lot they don't get as much attention Doug Ducey in Arizona or Mike to one in awhile but they ought to yeah I would just I would talk about on the federal level but you're absolutely right he plus our huge and and it seems that many states are work that many municipalities and I was just talking about on the federal level true Donald Trump is is going to be the person to watch here because he's gonna get people to follow mind you can consult with people obviously like Lindsay Graham and Mitch McConnell and and Chuck Grassley people who've been involved in this universe for a very long time but Donald Trump has the ability to get his party behind or anything good bad or indifferent and that's the person to watch and listen I I've said this playbook all week and I believe that we could be ten crises from now by September and they they hopefully they're not gun crises but this might be in the public consciousness over the next couple I I'm I'm curious if you saw we had a couple of near misses yesterday trying to Walmart with a gun and a local policeman stopped them and there is another and then we had four people stabbed to death in Orange County California my old home buyer they're not getting the same amount of tension as twenty two dead now Paso nine dead in Dayton but it's violence in the country is a systemic deeply rooted problem check I am curious about back to my question about taking a break does the grinding twenty four seven four season political world help or hurt the ability of Americans to deal with these endemic deep problems well you would have to say it hurts right and I'm not sure if I'm not sure how close is the right word but I mean we're always in a campaign season were always in we're always in the middle of some sort of political maelstrom and now we're in the middle of a of a a political campaign season the primary season where everybody's trying to dump on the president and and get to each other's left and right and all that stuff so you would have to imagine that this is not helpful I I don't know that there's any way to avoid this considering it's just the political calendar but listen ever I told I said this in the show before and I believe it every single member of Congress almost to a person goes home to an electorate that is more extreme or more partisan than they are so the yeah and that's just the fact of gerrymandering the fact of where we are as a country and I don't know that there's any way to avoid that so I'm not sure that's the best environment could compromise I I just don't I'm in a separate from here I think that what we see is a political late the three percent problem is when I began to caught the three percent on the right in the three percent on the left to use Twitter to shop on Mitch McConnell's lawn or who demonstrate against immigrants I mean that three percent of the hard core base that is out there screaming twenty four seven they are the problem I think and they don't let this yeah relax relax I'm not sure I agree I agree in theory but I just think that I can't tell you I had I was talking to a member of Congress who retired the other day who reminded me of something he said which is everybody goes home and they get yelled at whether or not all Republicans gonna get yelled at why they're not supporting trump even more so that's it's just it's just a sign of how how partisan the was that elected complaining because I actually I've been out abroad in the country I've been in Georgia and Virginia beach and back in California for a couple of days and the country actually doesn't reflect cable news and DC it it actually goes about its life pretty well they listen to the ball game like I did last night they they go to their doctors a point like Peggy Noonan like you there covering the nats but I do know your natural and Jake I thought you'd be a holy counter big big big time did you see the Browns crush the Redskins last night I did see that I'm not a redskin fans okay use professional football said brother huge that I am a huge Browns fan an Indian fan so I thought that's what we should be doing let me turn to Twitter with you Mitch McConnell breaks his shoulder his harassed in publications to Eddie yes the care and detail but group of twenty to thirty people often called the mob sometimes called the demonstration violin in its rhetoric voodoo do all that stuff shop on his lawn somebody takes a video of it and they post it McConnell's campaign team re tweets it to demonstrate to America the lunacy of the laughed and Twitter shuts down the McConnell campaign account this is just stupid as rocks on the part of Twitter because it seems quite obviously a double standard and it seems quite obviously intended to stop exposure of that most Americans would believe out of bounds acceleration of that political cycle does Twitter hang on stubbornly to what is a stupid stupid stupid position J. quarter they move Twitter needs to explain because they if there is a perception whether it's reality reality or not I don't know because they're not a public utility but they there's a perception that there are very uneven with that stuff and you've already seen the last baby enter at the the Senate committee the Republican Senate committee and and our CC the house Republican committee have said they're not going to buy any ads on Twitter killed this teen Mitch account is back online I don't know the specifics as well they should I've I've read the about the issue but I think what's clear is Twitter needs to set some some firm guidelines here because there's all sorts of disgusting things on Twitter and stuff I see all the time that that comes into my feet at that I don't I don't see Twitter taking action on that so I would I think you and they need to explain more about what's going on yeah this is business Silicon Valley is completely left wing dominated by left wing activists and run for left wing purposes by people claim they're not political and as you just said they're not a public the utility but you keep censoring the Senate Majority Leader and you're going to end up a public utility last question at Bruce or is back in the news he's up at politico Josh Gerstein has a story F. B. I. releases Bruce or interview reports I have my own assessment of these what do you think of these Bruce or three oh to I think I you know what's interesting to me over the last couple years that I don't mean to doctor question I just meant to bring this up but I I really do think lawsuits anti the people were suing the government over there firing at the FBI is going to be fascinating most fascinating because they're gonna have to go with the discovery and they're gonna be forced to answer all sorts of questions provide all sorts of it I'm not sure how that's going to turn out them obviously keep many these people are lawyers they thought about this I just think this is this is a circus not going away and I don't think it's a circus at the door that way but this issue the trunk versus the FBI trump verses the forces that he believes was insularity senior leadership Spygate is what we call it on the show and and hash tags by date is rising very quickly the one thing we haven't talked about this is interesting Jake the US is close to a peace deal with the Taliban according to time magazine Kimberly does are good reporter and has the details of Zalmay callous aids amber station with the Taliban and and how they're moving forward we've been in a war for nineteen years of these people nineteen years don't you think this is your headline I mean why is this not the front page of every I have my theory what he thought because I think the the US government has sought to tamp this down and said has said that they're not as close as people believe what they are it they've they've done enough to inject eject the skepticism I'm not skeptical of that report in time but I am I am listening to the U. S. government which is sad this is not as close as as people believe it to be so I I think we should pay attention to these reports and look into a little bit more I don't know that the there's been much more than that then that work but it'll be something to watch and you're right the electorate he's tired of wars and and realizes we've been in war for about two decades finally the Wall Street journal editorial uncle trump to the naval rescue it's American ships escorting everyone through the straits of Hormuz the new secretary of defense's ordered a top to bottom review do you think that foreign affairs is going to play a role in this domestic political cycle greater than it is been playing this week of violence in this week of gun control I personally do but what is Jack Sherman a political thank I think that if the president talks about it may be a welcome that the president had does not talk about his successes for some reason instead spends much of his time talking about it the enemy okay well I got to get this and by the way last story over politico Andrew Yang surpassed bail in the Iowa poll he qualified for the fall debates how bout that the biggest bizarre thing is people thinking the beta could be John Cornyn who is far more popular than ten Kerr Ted Cruz is in the state of Texas I'm not sure they can or can't but he didn't detect cruise is not very popular at the closest on corn in it for the public and the for a very long time and John's a good friend to show he's gonna win Jake Sherman always a pleasure femme on Twitter check German help your nats meet my Indians in the world to actually want to beat the cubs Jake sorry but could Abby Jake Sherman have a good weekend time to tell you about relay factor that calm for the weekend my last relief factor pack in the in the studio and I make in the cross country jam this weekend back to DC for meet the press I need my really factor because if they're playing time tomorrow an airplane time on Sunday the back and forth and a lot of good reading time I.

"It all on. K. G. O eight. John Batchelor show speaking, Jack Hurst born to battle is the book grant and forest Shiloh Vicksburg and Chattanooga Jack tells a complicated story of relationships and also class was critical to the command structure of both the north and the south far more so to the south and I understood until Jack's presentation Beauregard who commanded at Shiloh church and Johnston was killed a child church where superiors they had training. They were military nights. Whereas Nathan Bedford Forrest was a commoner who could ride and he could shoot. But he came from hardscrabble farming. He was not advocated, and he was disdained by his fellow officers as a partisan, not as a regular soldier grant on the other hand came from a West Point background, but he'd been disgraced by his drinking and his misbehavior and his loneliness and had been broken out. And the only thing he'd ever been good at. Is being as father son, and his father will trouble him over the course of the war, but grants relationship with Sherman is especially striking? Jack Sherman came from. Well to do they were adopted their family had troubles, but his brother was in the Senate other brothers were quite prominent in Ohio Sherman had been Thomas roommate at West Point. He was older than grand. What was their relationship? What, what was it formed on? Why did Sherman trust grant? Why did grant trust Sherman? Well, I think that Sherman Sherman had this problem in Kentucky in, in late eighteen sixty one when he was in command in Kentucky. And he just he sort of went to pieces, and, and he you know, he thought he saw confederates everywhere around just he, he despaired he just he just did not. He hit been the head of, of an academy. And we've Yanna and he liked southerners, and he knew how you know, difficult, they could be as fighters. And so he he despaired of the unions. Ability to, to, to put them down. And he thought that confederates he was going to win didn't he always thought they were going win. He did for a long time until until he got really close with grants. But what happened was after that after he kind of went to pieces in Kentucky. They began to the northern. General's tried to into rehabilitate him. And, and so at fort donelson, they tried to get him to go down and take grants place at fort donelson. Because at that time, he outranked grant he had more time in, in, in the rank of Brigadier General grant, and so but he refused to do that. But he did go down and, and send forward supplies to grant any sent him a note, saying, you know, that I will be glad to come there. And, and, you know, wave rank and just in work, under you, if you lead me to and that really really affected grant. I mean, he'd never had anybody do that, especially somebody is prominent Sherman, and it, it that started the friendship and, and they just grew as they as they when they got to Shiloh and. And they, you know, they, they did get surprised down there, but they, they refuse to turn on each other, when the press and everybody was coming after grant Sherman refused to turn on grants. In fact, one of famous quotes from Sherman was that, you know? Stood by him when he was drunk and he stood by me when I was crazy. And, and it's really kind of the way it was. And, and they just kept getting more and more friendly and win in Sherman that night, he, he said after that night at Shiloh when, when grant said, you know lick 'em tomorrow, though, that was when he began to believe that they could win, you know that they that they can win the war. Not just that battle, April, seven, April seventh grant counter attacks and counter attacks bills forces who come late in the day and overwhelms a Beauregard and drives the confederates from the field. It is a bloody victory. But nonetheless, it is recorded as a success late in the pursuit Sherman. Pursues the confederates, and they're charged a solitary rider, a fabulous scenes, Jack unbelievable scene in which forest charges, the union troops by himself and they're screaming out kill him. And they miss him. How many horses were shot out from underneath forest I lost count Jack I and the bullets that flew into him in the times, he was shot, he was unkillable on the battlefield so Sherman. All right now, after Shiloh church because of the scale of casualties twenty four thousand on both sides. Because the newspapers said that grant was either inadequate or completely irresponsible the. Forces of the army, make reduce grant second in command. Haluk Haluk distains grant, why. What is Haluk specific towards grant? Well, heroic was, it was a, a by the book soldier? In fact, he was a sort of a lie on the West Point, who had written books on military theory was either military, intellectual, and he, he looked down on grant because grant, you know grant didn't even want to go to West Point. And he wasn't interested in anything he studied there and, and all that really never never wanted to be a soldier. But grant was from this class of people that just they, you know, they understood that you had to get the job on whatever the job was that, you got handed you had to get it done, and, and, and Haluk he gets so grant in, in having been in the army before he knew all about grants, you know, reputation for alcoholism. And so all those things together just made him. He didn't like the fact that grant really didn't care about. His uniform one way or the other, what, what he had on, and that sort of thing, and it just all offended Hallaq, and he, you know, he but, but grant got promoted by Lincoln the night after the surrender at fort donelson. And so he was the most senior general in the west besides Halley until Hallaq had them make do with him. And even though he kept trying to get other people, especially before, and he had tried badly hard to get somebody else promoted to take grants plate. All right. Let's, let's tell the story of grant and Haluk born battle grant, and four Shiloh Vicksburg and Chattanooga.
