"And so brilliant. You named literary two of my favorite bands. When you ask that question, I have my favorites. Those are two that came up a third one is children of bodom. Who I just think they just take all the boxes for me. Yeah, I don't know. Nowadays, I sort of feel like a repulsion to I was that myself like I'd be like, who do you prefer more? Come on, who's like, no, you have to rank them. But it's like this false zero sumness that's why they're so additive, like there's no conflict there. When people ask that kind of question about anything movies, I feel like it's hard work. And it's unfair, but you should pick one. Yeah. And that's actually the same kind of like a fear of a commitment. People ask me what's your favorite band? It's like, but you know, it's good to pick. Exactly. And thank you for, yeah, thank you for the tough question. Yeah. Well, maybe not. No, no. Context when a lot of people are listening. Yeah, not just like, why does it sound? No, it does. Are you still into metal? Funny enough I was listening to a bunch before I came over here. Oh, do you use it for motivation? Yeah. Or get you in a certain way. Yeah, I was weirdly listening to 80s hair metal before I came. Does that count as metal? I think so. It's like Proto metal, and it's happy. It's optimistic, happy Proto metal. All these genres bleed into each other. But yeah, sorry to answer your question about guitar playing. My relationship with it was kind of weird in that I was deeply uncreative. My objective would be to hear some really hard technical solo and then learn it, memorize it and then play it perfectly. But I was incapable of trying to write my own music. The idea was just absolutely terrifying. But I was also just thinking, I was like, it'd be kind of cool to actually try starting a band again and getting back into it and write, but it's scary. That's scary. I mean, I put out some guitar playing just other people's covers like I play comfortly numb on the Internet. And scary too. It's scary putting stuff out there. And I had this similar kind of fascination with technical playing, both on piano and guitar. One of the first. One of the reasons that I started learning guitar is from Ozzy Osbourne, mister crawley solo. And one of the first souls I learned is that there's a beauty to it that a lot of beauty. Is there some topic, but it's just really fast, beautiful, like arpeggios, arpeggios, yeah. But there's a melody that you can hear through it, but there's also build up and it's a beautiful solo, but it's also technically just visually the way it looks when a person's watch, do you feel like a rockstar player? But it ultimately has to do with technical, you're not developing the part of your brain that I think requires you to generate beautiful music.

"Decide to hear the case Some people know Ozzy Osbourne from his long running family reality TV show or the shows that his wife Sharon is hosted then there are some of us who remember all the way back 40 years ago today when the heavy metal rocker bit the head off a live bat while performing on stage it horrified members of the audience people everywhere Aussie has said it was all a mistake in the documentary the 9 lives of Ozzy Osbourne the singer says fans used to throw all sorts of weird stuff at him and when somebody threw a live bat on stage he thought it was a toy Unfortunately when he put it in his mouth he found out otherwise and the rest is rock and roll history Let's just say this is different Musical duos don't get any better than Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel and as we hear from WTO's entertainment editor Jason frilly the Simon and Garfunkel story comes to National Theater next week Playing diamond in our car for almost music in a live setting Reproduce to such a high degree of exactness Taylor bloom performs as Simon while Benjamin Cooley performs his Garfunkel The first song of Simon Garfunkel that I ever took note of was the song America which is in the show the boxer of course Hazy shade of winter is a really popular one and homeward bound between the songs you'll learn about their journey There's this beautiful projection screen behind us that has all of these amazing visuals that they pick what's happening in the world around Simon and Garfunkel at the time because they were writing and releasing music during a really dense period of American history You know you've got Vietnam unfolding you've got the summer of love all these different things are.

"We'll come in we'll play. We'll prove we'll bring you a crowd will make you money. Then we're you know we'll we'll negotiate again for the next show and after a while. We just didn't that we didn't have to do it anymore. Things come to mind nothing. Do we opened up. A show for deals disciples one time and he stayed in of in one of the other bands comes over and seizes his randy wien and i think he had one of the zag guitars and a guy. Says wow you really get into it don't you. Yeah and and the guy says well. That's cute so he says well. See how fucking curious. When i blow you off the fucking. Yeah this ban. it brings a lot. I was everybody in the ban. We all fucking low we. We know why were there. This is for us and like after every show he never fails. He thinks that he'll get on facebook. And you'll thank everybody. And i do it but after every thank you. I like ozzy always at the show. I love you. But i always say in. God bless ozzy osbourne. That's why we're there because you're fucking ozzy's demand lousy we'll but you have a sells quality in you and it's called. It's what we have to do. Sales people there is a personal touch. That's that's involved in in a having a true fan base that latches onto you follow me. I i know so many musicians that don't give their fan base the time of day but even somebody at my level. I'm not. I'm not fulltime musician. And there's many better musicians out there but anytime anybody comments on my sound or my podcast. I make sure that. I personally think them for that. And if i if i don't then it's just i missed it and you know my apologies for that but you'd be surprised how many followers you get just from acknowledging the people because they're the ones that come into the bars there the reasons why the bar owners even bring you guys and to begin with and we can't as musicians. We can't lose sight of that that we're just part of the moneymaking experience you know we're there to bring people in and retain people that's what we do at the end of the day and it don't matter if you're doing ufo covers for billy joel covers or whatever i mean or ozzy covers it's retaining customers and putting butts and seats at the end of the day. I mean there's so many options on saturday night for somebody to do go see oban somewhere to stay home and do nothing and for them to you know. Take time out of their evening to come see you. You know. it's it's an absolutely. I agree with you. This is for both of you. Guys favorite song to play live. Man i tell you what th there's there's this is every show every show this two times where where i'm just i'm watching them. It's when we do miss crowley and he goes into the solos and i'm lost. I get lost in this guy and then of the shows when we do war pigs because they're all just jamming all of them. And i and i'm on stage you know. There's not very much lyrics to war. Pigs so i do my my stuff and i step back and these guys. Just go at it now. God damn i get. I get lost in and you know. Luckily i get back in time sooner. You go on your own trip and then come back to me. I guess it'd be mr crowley. Because he owns he fucking this year. The rest of the ballots adams keyboards. He does his great intro to ohio. One guy pointed out even folks. We're fucked some. you're really good. If you've got the same lyrics and ozzy forget. I think it's one thing to mimic a person and maybe a quality about them but i have to say when i saw the show. You got the walk down you got the you got the top down. You know you've done your homework. Right is is my point. But there's there's one thing you can't teach yourself. And that's the look like ozzy and you have a striking resemblance of him so you can't teach somebody that you can teach you gotta clap this way or you gotta hold your fingers that way but either. Look like ozzy to a certain degree or you. Don't i'm not saying you look like him but you have you have qualities of otter. We're both guys yet. Jeff for sure threat law around here. Yeah that's it island. Just because you pay tribute to ozzy would that. Would it be safe to say that. He is your favorite musician. Or is that just who you guys are comfortable. You love his music. You'll have a lot of music book. But is he your favorite or do you have another favorite. But you just do ozzy really. Wow my first. Love was the beatles. But like i said as soon as i heard diary in fuck i i think actually the first thing i heard was crazy. Train the interest yell it became ozzy. It's it's rock and roll is saying it's a thing of this the thing of just i can describe it and some people body. And that's ain't nobody embodies better than house john to me. It's ozzy john boxcar. we'll see. Oh yeah but on top of the heat. Because he's still going. So there's there's no projects outside of oz right no not really not enough for me Germs got unreasonable band. Called down for days. Are keyboard player. He's the guy everybody wants. He's in a four hundred called double vision. Ochre basin another before to drag queens right okay there forever. Many as an original called mass victim as well. So he's he's the other than that he's not doing anything about it. Practice it just you know he comes out with all these fucking great ribs. And i'm thinking. I fucking yeah. Yeah every once in a while get the itch to work on some original stuff with these guys and to see what they can do it. I do that at home. you know. i've got a little own studio. I can record and just lay down some. You know basic tracks if we get an idea. But i don't know if we want to pursue that or not but it's an option. Yeah i was going to ask you that like is there. Would you ever consider writing your own stuff in in the What we're looking for the vein of us in the vagnozzi. Yeah yeah i mean. It's a possibility. I would be really cool like you know because i don't know if you guys know who greta van fleet is right but they sound striking led zeppelin right. So there's a there's a back in black acdc treaty. Who are i show. We deal with them. They actually opened the show with their originals..

And it's funny because another thing that we do is even though we don't pick a particular area or era of his tribute are stage. Names have to do with like sandy. Sandy custodio we named him after randy. Castillo scott scott. Days after bob day. Yes an atom keyboard player. If i can remember. He's either adam sinclair or adam wakeman. Okay y- inside. I just taught to be. Yeah gus jake todd b. Although he actually came up with the name that we thought about using one day practice he just called himself fakey faking. That's a good one and there's been times while thought about just because i always every show. I introduced him because without this show. It wouldn't be sure happen every once in awhile. When i'm when i say todd that's awesome tad f. and b. is i want to say fakey lease with these guys. It wouldn't be just what it is now. I agree with you. what would you say for you. What's the most important part of pudding band together. And i think there's different aspects of putting a band together first of all you have to have a good culture. You have to have brothers in the band. You have to get along. That's that's part of it right. It's part of it is musicianship in the other. Part is probably looks every baby you can people can say that that's not part of a bit. It dam sure is right is okay so my question there is when you started thinking man we could really make a go of this this ause tribute band right for for ozzy osbourne was the most important what was the most important thing for you was at musicianship was it a look was it a culture i mean was there one that stuck out in your mind more than other that you you really focused on for the ban for me as the all of it okay. I had to sound like Especially i i had. I had to be him on. Stage like the. Elvis guys are always in these other guys but that band. It had to have a look and i have the chops for it to work and the like i said i don't wanna wanna sound like i'm putting these guys down with the i bands. We had didn't our first guitar player..

"Remember those strings back in the day super. Slinky out remember i was using. I don't even remember the gauge now. But they came in a pink package called co weather called cobalt. And they're bad this cobol coating on them just like him because they don't have that brand new slick fielding you take some strings out especially if i'm stringing up before gig get sweaty. My fingers will slip off has coating on there. that doesn't make them quite slick and knock on wood. They don't ever break on me really. Yeah i've never. I've knock on wood again. I have never broken a string. Mig was so you're not a coded string player by by default. You prefer more of what you were talking about our uncoded. Because i had a buddy of mine that said man you gotta try these diario. Their uncoded always played elixirs on my taylor's and there are coded string. And when i when. I ran my fingers down. Those diarios is like i'm not saying anything like they're they're great tone but i just feel like there's glue on these strange thing. Became you become very accustomed to the feel of your instrument strings. don't slide enough or they slide too much. It changes things right. You overshoot a fred. You know there's a lot of things that could happen. Soula what about what about from pedal perspective facto right guy. Braxton maxwell facto artists on their roster. And how do you go about getting on that. Do they discover you. Do you call into them. How does that how does that. It came about a lot had lower back surgery back in twenty fourteen just from thirty plus twenty plus years of carrying around half stacks loading amount of trucks did a one too many times i guess and get it wrong and tweaked my back so i had to get back surgery so after the surgery. I was like if i want to keep doing this. I'm going to have to figure out something. That's easier on me. And so i started looking into the modeling stuff. Tried line six pack. When i came out back in the early very early two thousands or whatever and it's like no. Yeah but i checked out practical shocked kemper and there's another checked out to anyway. The the big ones at that point this was this was in two thousand sixteen. We're practiced kemper. And so i bought. Both of them started messing with them. And i was like well. It's not quite there.

I must say i talked to iggy and you know come on though cabrera so todd. Let's just quickly shift. I wanna talk to you a little bit about your role in the band. First of all you have your chops down you you know from the cords to the pendulum onyx. To the you know. The the note for no solos. How many hours a day as a kid. We can talk about from the kid perspective up until the now perspective. How many hours a day were you pick in the damn guitar. There's a big jump between back de figured there was but i'll let just make to the younger the younger age. Todd and then we'll come back to the is all i did when when i picked it up. I came home from school and i played till i couldn't keep my eyes open and had to go to bed and there was a lot of homework that was not done in between all. I mean that was that was young. I think i was twelve or thirteen and it was like that for a lot of years until i got more around fifteen sixteen. Where had my friends. I got cars and could drives wasn't always home anymore. Still practice like crazy but nowadays man. I'm lucky if i can get maybe an hour to in in each week. Now if it's a show we gotta show coming up that week Hit it hard every day. Two hours at least almost. Just you know knocking the rest off life gets in the way as you get older you have. You have a business you know. We have businesses that we go to every day to try to put food on the table and pay our mortgages right so we yes. We have to prioritize. We grow up a little bit. And like i said the more and more heard ozzy the more and more. I looked at him and said why not this guy. Yeah why why. This ellis street region stones and tina turner and share our guy Fucking ozzy you. You grew up in a scene. Absolute good armed was a hacienda. Was always plast it in the news. It was always being ridiculed or made. Fun of were being held was ozzie. I'll come back. Because i want to ask you the same question about previous bands before ause but it made me think of how to remember the year horrible with dates. But i remember buying a ticket to the texas jam at the dome and the lineup was gary moore bryan adams thirty eight special ozzy osbourne and rush five bands. And i remember sitting in the audience when gary moore came out and he's like trying to pump people up and people were like. Yeah and then you know bryan adams came out which had a lotta hit. Songs brought adams great. great artists. Right now you know a little more than thirty eight special. But when fucking ozzy hit the stage dude in the lights went out in the tone. The roof was blown off of that place before he even opened his mouth. That's the kind of you know. That's that's powerful like. There's there's nothing not a better feeling than that. Have that kind of energy and it might have been eighty three eighty two eighty three something like that texas jama gem. I remember boston. But yeah the Ozzy just like people who the roof off the place but but going back before ause. Sorry for the derailment there. Reliving my childhood therefore minute walk down memory lane but before odds what were you. What were you playing. Were playing in some man here and there i was. I joined a band. A local band called victim. When i was nine thousand nine hundred and i was in one thousand nine hundred ninety one and i was in that band holdaway till two thousand twelve twenty one and twenty one years so long time so we talked about the power of music and that you know that y'all's guy but who came up with oz who's who who's brainchild was this was iggy as you said i. I'm gonna do us ozzy tribute that. Yeah i actually five star data a black savage i. Actually it was nowhere near as good as is ben. I'm not trying to be ticked anybody just as we were more of a cover band tree because we did ozzie ozzie sabbath. Do we messed around with all the different lineups. And i stopped doing music for a while. And i got a call from a guy that had another attribute that been houston since the nineties figure. Why not i jumped into that. I sat down with iggy taught in my home studio back on june twenty second or i think it was somewhere around june twenty second and i had a super cool conversation with these guys but at the time we had no idea of the news that would be broadcast just three months later an announcement had come out of the odds camp that they would temporarily suspend shows to finding out that lead guitarist. Todd bishop was diagnosed with stage three lung cancer and is currently undergoing treatment at md anderson here in houston texas. Also keep my friend and former guests. Joey see jones in your thoughts and prayers. He is also in the fight with cancer as well. We know that both will be triumphant in the road to recovery. Man i think max norman and the effort to bring back a classic sound to ozzy osbourne which you know the next one could be his last one. Give it to us. Good is he gives us max norman. In classic zone. I would absolutely be a first date buyer for an ozzy record with maximum producing. I would be. I would love to hear that. Oh yeah that's a great idea. I in and actually the ordinary man record kinda grew on me over time. I it's not. I think people were kind of blown out of proportion for how bad it well. Yeah the the low lights are low but there were some decent songs on that record. I thought i don't know if you stand up. Is these collection. I think its way towards the bottom for sure. I liked it better than some of the other more. Modern releases put out. I think at the at the time when when they decided to break up i think that was because i think everyone was maybe not Like super depressed. Like i was when i left but i think everyone was kinda just sit with moving in different directions with life and three of the guys are married with kids now and stuff so i think they're just like a kind of feeling burned out because we were doing it like pretty like constantly for over a decade so i think everyone just kind of got away from it for a bit and were kind of living normal lives and then you know three something years past and i think a conversation just kind of happened and i think everybody was again like i. It had enough time away from it to be to think about it and be like that sounds fun you know. It sounded fun again to everybody instead of just feeling. We're going on tour and end. What really helped. I think too was having the attitude of. We're gonna do this tour.

Rock N Roll Archaeology
Opening Act - Rumors in Rock
"First false rumor. Did you ever hear the rumor about Keith? Moon driving a Rolls Royce into a hotel pool. I've heard a lot of stories about Keith. Moon well. He is the quintessential rock and roll guy and bad boy he definitely collected Nazi memorabilia. He may have bitten. Steve McQueen's Hog and blew up his drums win. The WHO played on the smothers brothers. Comedy Hour. I cannot wait to do his episode I am. I have like four books based on. Keith Moon I am. I am locked and loaded. I Love Keith. He is my soul. Well so those things may be true however there was a rumor that he drove a Rolls Royce into a pool at the Holiday Inn in Flint Michigan on his twenty. First Birthday. This is not true. According to Pete Townsend. The story is actually a combination of two different stories. That has become one not true rumor. So Keith Moon. In one of the stories like one of the incidents he left the Hamburg off of a car and it rolled into a pool which was under construction and to not have any water in hit home. Which would be worse though driving? Dr Into a pool with water or driving a car into a pool without water but he didn't drive the car into that. I'm just like either one either or I'm just saying like it just rolled in on its own. Which would do more damage I think you're pretty much screwed either way fair enough. The cars a loss of it goes near the pool. Yeah Okay and then so the second story that this was combined with to create the not true drove. Rolls Royce. Into a pool was that he charged new car to the band. Who refuse to pay for it. So Moon drove it into a muddy pond in his garden and call the dealer to come pick it up. So it's too true. Stories rolled into one story right. That's not true. Yeah Oh yeah. It's incredible and that's not our last Keith. Moon rumor either. Nope our next one which is true now okay. I should say with the caveat that these are true and false based on articles that we both read and so there might be room for error. So this is just like fun. Yeah it's just fun and it's inauguration. It's yeah just what we found. No one has photographic evidence. It's just fun fun so I hope you guys out. Don't get angry and you're like that never happened or that did happen bub-bubba so like don't don't get mad at us is just this is just meant to be fun and a little bit looser so and just for us to kind of talk off the cuff so Our next one. Which is true. Is All about Ozzy Osbourne. Oh my so ozzy. Osbourne achieved infamy overnight after incident on January twentieth nineteen eighty two in Des Moines Iowa during the height of his drug problem. That is putting it mildly. Ozzy Osbourne was performing when an audience member through a bat on stage. The singer believing that it was rubber and I do believe that he thought it was robbery. I don't think he would have. I believe that too. Yeah bid off its head as a stunt only to find out that the bat was real and alive not only that but as he declares in liner notes to the two thousand two reissue of diary of a madman. The Bat wound up biting him as well which forced him to be treated for rabies. The incident fed his rock madman legend along with the one time that he bit off the head of a dove which basically what happened was when he first met with Columbia records in Nineteen ninety-one. He took a live dub into the meeting with him and bit off the head in front of the horrified executives. Awful yeah so crazy man out. I wouldn't sign him to a record deal yeah. He was also arrested for urinating on. Or near the Alamo. And while on tour with Motley crue he allegedly got into a one upmanship. Dare contest with Nikki. Nikki six and I'm sorry that is at is a contest. I would never even get close to know but he ended up snorting a line of ants better than biting the heads off live animals. I think though no okay. The dove thing is kind of unforgivable. The bad thing is understandable. But you snorted a line of ants would if they were fire ants also. You just have ants in your sinuses now. I'm sad I read that. Oh my God you have to elaborate immediately regretted it I apologize. You should move on move on Thanksgiving on next all right. Here's a good one Kay cass. Elliot choke to death on a ham sandwich. Can We bury this now? Please yeah really not cool. I don't like this lie at all. This rumors terrible are you. Doing Mama Cass. Yes I am all right so this came up. Following a series of sold out gigs. In London Mama Cass retired to her apartment where she died of heart failure on July. Twenty Ninth Nineteen Seventy Four. A rumor spread very quickly that she died from choking on a ham sandwich which is just a horrible thing to say you know yes. She was a little overweight route. So it's believed that the rumor started when Dr Anthony. Greenberg the physician who I examined CASS. After her death wrote she appeared to have been eating a ham sandwich and drinking coca cola while lying down a very dangerous thing to do. She seemed to have choked on her ham sandwich. So so great job Dr Greenberg for that one. But point of fact her autopsy showed that a heart problem leading to heart. Failure was the cause of death not a sandwich or any other item lodged in her throat or trachea. She had actually had very little to eat the day before she died like her stomach was pretty clear. No dead I'm actually going to piggyback and double down on a Mama Cass and Keith Moon. True story with us. They were not but they did die in the same apartment. Yeah rockstars have been taken from US. Way Too young and it just so happens that two brilliant musicians died in the same apartment at the same age of thirty two Singer Harry Nilsson I love. That's my alarm. Every morning I wake up to his song. GotTa get out okay. If you've seen the show Russian dolls you'll know why I wake up to a song every day but He renounced his London flat to friends when he was traveling. And so on June twenty ninth nineteen seventy four Mama Cass of the Mamas. And the Papas was staying in the flat while she was on tour and died of heart failure in her sleep and on September seventh. Nineteen seventy eight Keith. Moon of the WHO overdosed on a sedative in that very same apartment which is eerie because they died in the same apartment under the same landlord at the same age. How crazy is that? That's a little

Now what have I been jamming first off? I usually don't listen to singles nor talk about them. Prefer to listen to the entire project but I am really dig in this new a lantis smiling track. It's classic Atlantis. I mean it has me excited for the album and just happy that she is still making amazing music. Now I'm working my way through royse the five nine the allegory. It's twenty two songs and in our in eight minutes long. Soa Is GonNa take me a minute. I mean in this new world of EPA's anything longer than thirty minutes is a mission to get through but Royce is classic hip hop he is woke af and so are his kids. His interludes with his kids included includes him quizzing them on woke facts. I taught them. It's a heavy won't because it deals with race in America and its history with race. The production is incredible. I WANNA have expected anything less from Royce now Christian hip hop albums whole the broken heart. Ep So I never heard of this up and coming rapper slash singer science rapper. Lacroix's reach records but Craig plug him on his. I G saying congrats semi guy at Harvey official on his EP. Keep your eyes on this kid. So that is the only reason I checked out this kid. 'cause I'm Craig Fan? I didn't learn that craze signed him to I didn't. I didn't learn that cray signed him until I listened to the EP and then I started researching the kid now dudas talented and he looks like a regular dude like nothing about him. Screams artist so watching his visuals on. Youtube is kind of mind blowing. I mean each track on the EP has a visual. So you can choose how you would like to digest his prajit cold world or cold water and if I gave it all our my standouts But the entire album. You can listen from start to finish. I mean it's an EP It's super short. The run time for this one is wall on Apple Music. Obviously that's why I have Include it's only six tracks but it also includes the visuals on it so it says that it's twenty or forty minutes but I'm GonNa just cut that in half because it's literally like a double album with visuals. So it's probably only twenty minutes so you see it's easier for me to run through twenty minutes than in our eight minutes like royster five nine so I did get to get through all these a few times And it's definitely worth a

Bryan, Adams, Shaquir shed, so many moist like you said he's been a hell of a ride. It started with at age too. I started playing the drums. And my my parents got me a little toy drum kit in somehow realized that I had an affinity for the drums and at the same time. I was diagnosed with retina, blah, stola, which is cancer of the eye, and what that turned out to be is that to remove the cancer. They had to remove my right is. So I became blind in my right eye since the age two in it really had a profound effect on my life and my family's life beyond the near death experience in the in the loss of sight. I had a prosthetic, and and it really kinda look different than other kids. So I had a pretty isolated kinda rough childhood in music ended up being my refuge. I also became kind of a collector. I I like started collecting baseball cards in GI Joe's and immersed myself in like my own world. Really? And by the time, I was eight I was taking drum lessons by the. Time. I was twelve I was playing in bands. I started taking lessons with some really amazing drum teachers drummers, Alan Dawson, Joe Morello, rod more instinct, less rural just world class drummers. And because my parents were always very intent on making sure that anything that he did took a very educated in learning approach and learned it, quote, unquote. Right.
