The new Royal the Royal baby. Yes. According to the United Nations one million different species of life on earth are going extinct. But at least we were able to save the rare useless baby, Royal? A lot of people a lot of people say were too obsessed for the royals we fought award and not have to be obsessed with the royals but come on. It's just so exciting after the last couple of years to see a Brit, successfully exit something. Everything independently, you know, this is Megan first baby. Sometimes that's hard. It was a challenging labor. But interestingly by tradition the OBGYN who finally pulled the baby out is now the rightful king of England. Well, isn't I mean, I don't know British history thoroughly. But is this the first Royal with American, colonial power Lee? There was somebody way back when but certainly it's the first modern Royal. Well, this is the first one that's black. Yeah. Dance around that come on. I don't know. I saw CNN did some horrible tagline like. Gonna be black enough or were they raise them black. How do you? How do you raise a British black person? Yeah. The other day, you know, we can play. We don't play Mill Reef here when I get when I get back gotta go somewhere this week, but let's get back mobile up out there. A little furic. He's worked on. He's really worked on his wing. He's really he. His contact and stuff is much better now, but that doesn't make any. The beyond what you play Bellary. What in the last, what is today? Today's Wednesday, Wednesday, the twenty second. As we sit here, the played Tuesday yesterday. No, no Monday. Okay. Yeah, so I played. I was lucky enough to play at the day after you're going to play like the pros, right. And unlike I played with a guy and I'm like, I really wanna play the tips. I might shoot one hundred thirty, but I really wanna play the tips. Tell me was at work. That's work. I shut forty five on the back. I haven't. I felt like a forty five. That's good. I'm telling you. Seventeen. That would? No, it really is. It really is work when you're hitting from back where where they're heading driver three would on par forward and still not getting that. And then you're playing the rough like you're playing out of the sand because it's like open the club face and tell you what folks if he sat Forty-five chipped and putting it you. All right. No three putts. And And that's that's the the key. key, but how did you do when you played it? Did you. No, no, no, no, no. Out sixty three years. A light play from? No, nobody's tips anymore. They say, sixty, you could play the white teeth. That's where we actually played the green. We actually play the green teas and we only played nine and I shot fortieth. Yeah, it was pretty cool though. When people are leaving, they're going to Saint Louis needs another event. Another great is that I mean, that's really what it's all about, and we're hoping that they now see that the world now see that we're, we're great. We're baseball town and that always will be, but we're great sports town. You know, the Rams left here, but that was a business decision they made. I think the people supported them. I had nine tickets myself, so I know we support it. The Rams that was his business day made to move. The blues, of course, are always supported very well here. And I think that golf will would be supported very well here as well. Now we have had the senior championship at Boone valley and the ladies were at force hill or fills. And then when you're FOX running at FOX run, so. We're here. I think we proved that with the one hundred PGA championship that we could. We would support golf in the city. So hopefully we'll get get an opportunity to prove that. I hope so Ozzy a thank you for all of your work on playing a role in bringing it here because that gave so many people, one of their best sports memories there live hits great walking around here in the excitement that create still look at highlights. And that was really, you know, informative, but informative with some stories of experie-. Ince's both in the game of golf and also baseball. And I think if there's something that I take away from it because it applies to what he experienced in eighty two and eighty five and eighty seven to a lesser extent ninety six..

"Even though we did put up in two thousand seventeen good numbers, and I don't want that to be Representative to other potential African American environment. I think the the environment in which we live when you know, people don't stop and put themselves in other people's shoes. You know, we go through our lives and sometimes we just lived through playing baseball. You know the the baseball game and that's all you. That's all. That's all we want. You know, just gimme my baseball and all of that other stuff and in it's the great thing about sport. It brings people together. In an allows you to not have to deal with all of the other stuff that goes on in the world. And when you start bringing all of the politics and all of that stuff until it gets very complex. My relationship with my baseball team should be here in this city, and I shouldn't allow outside sources to tell me about my team and how my team should be put together or or what they should. It should not be doing. So it's the politics at that that ruins everything when politics come into play, it is ruins everything. We're in an environment where it's very hard for everybody to do relationship that you have with between a black and white person. We are now in a position where we have to question you know whether or not that person is the same person that I used to know in it's bad because you should never have to do that. When when we're talking about just. Treating people the way you wanna be treated, knowing the difference between right and wrong. So it's unfortunate, but. This too will pass, and I hope that people learn from this and and and realize that, hey, you take people for who they are, the relationship that you have with them and don't let other people influence you tell you, you know how this person is. Right? I agree with you on that in and it takes us back to where we started, which is the PGA championship e. j. golfing in an a I was on the range the morning of the final round just didn't have it was a field of dreams moment. I mean, you know, it's, it was pretty. So It it was. was somehow they weren't letting people out there night. Probably you out there. They wouldn't let me. But they finally okay, fine finding go out there and I'm standing next Al MacInnis. He's a guy. That's right. We're just where does BSN. I mean, there's tiger in front of us followers in front of us roms. I'm all the final group would star studded with and and Adam Scott. And he is, you know what? I hope tiger wins is going to be great for him to win here, but he goes, this has been so great. A Saint Louis really needed a shot in the arm. And I think what that event Ozzie told people was a gave people a sense of confidence that we can do great things here. It doesn't have to be limited to the baseball team, and I thought that was one of the best takeaways from it outside of how exciting it wasn't a competition. Tiger walking over that bridge that that, hey, you know it was. It was people coming together, you know, and that's, and that's really what it's all about. It's one of the reasons that guys stay here in this community because you know. Without outside influences people for the most part, we get along. It works. So you know, it's one of the main reasons that I'm still here. So it's about people and enjoying people and and and take people for for who, and what they are doing so much and still being part of the community. And I wanna make sure I make get this out to our audience. It's called the PGA reach golf tournament and gala. It's Tober seventh and eighth. The Ritz Carlton October, seventh is the gala and then special guests Marcus Allen, Eric Dickerson the golf, October eighth. The country club is saying Albans, go to Ozzie Smith golf dot com to sign up. Let our audience know what you have going on with that event. You know, when I've been able to do through our PG reach foundation is I've tried to bring people here that are great. Sports fans don't have a chance to see on an everyday basis. My first guest was and people love this. This part of it. It was just a sit down between me, Hank Aaron. Oh, Dr. J.. Bo Jackson..

"The left field line of around to the right field line. But thinking more from the nephew, Linus inner feel you got more success in that area than you do a strictly trying to pull the ball. Yeah, yeah. Yeah, that makes sense. And I really heard it laid out that way. But like you said, it isn't Chinese arithmetic. It's it's kind of logical, actually, very simple. When you keep it in simple terms, we've taken this game and we've allowed people who hasn't played the game to tell us how the game is or what the game is. All about. The game is about catching hit, run through. I'll don't beat yourself. You got chance to win a. Do you think Mike shelters? The guy, yeah. I think that I've, I've had a chance to spend a lot of time with Mike shield. That's why I know that Mike, she'll you knew him well before, right, then he stands. You know, when I started going back to spring training, he was one of the guy I spent a lot of time with and in the whole time he's picking my brain on on baseball. He's worked under George Kissel. So I know that Mike shield has what. It takes in, you're seeing it. He is one of the most successful records. In his first four or five weeks than anybody in basic and against winning teams that Marlins royals week. I mean, these are all playoff competitors. That's right. And the bottom line, is that what you try and do from the start of the season from spring training to start a sees you try and win two out of every three games you play. You gotta find a way it used to always bug me. They said, well, we lost fifteen one run ballgames. That just means that you found a way to lose your good clubs. Find a way to windows one run ballgame. And that's what's going on right now. The cars were three to one in the sixth inning. I go, God, I know it's coming in blow pens, gonna lose it and they're gonna lose a game. And now I go to bed last night. They're playing the dodgers. They're up. I think three, two one. I'm like, I'm going to wake up. They're gonna have one. They're finding ways to go. It changes even the thought process of the people fan base the fan, but and that's a phenomenal thing. You mentioned chemistry, chemistry, spelled win. I love that. I'm going to be ripping that honestly, So you you know know. you go ahead. Use it. Everybody hall of fame. Did you guys have good chemistry and the teams that won tenants? Think about it, I would assume so I wasn't. Chemistry was always good. And you know, one of the things that white, he was good at what good manager. They find a bad apple and they get rid of it. Now. It may be unpopular, but they get rid of the mad apple. And that's one of the things as a manager, you have to be good at yet to be sharp at. You know, it's a tough move. Can be a popular with the fans. You don't wanna. You don't wanna address them down publicly. Exactly. So you gotta make it's balancing. Yeah. What's a bad apple do when it clubhouse undermine the manager take shots of teammates. I mean, what goes? Yeah. I mean, it's just makes people uncomfortable and you don't. You don't want that. You don't. You don't want that type of environment. You want an open environment. You have. You want an open door policy where you if I make a move, you understand why I'm making the move and why he was great at the Joe Torry was good at that. You know what at explaining, hey, this is why I'm doing good managers have that knack of that ability to communicate. And sometimes as players, their level of greatness will. Up, their level of greatness will not allow them to be great manages because their level of expectation is a lot greater than the average. That's why you don't see a lot of hall of famers being great managers. Yeah, it's interesting. Now, my logic would tell me that they made enough money and they don't want to mess around with it. But you're saying there's, yeah. Yeah, that's part of it. But the bottom line is that when you would you are great at what you do. There's a reason for that. So you expect a lot more of you than than people did. Ozzie Smith, the guest this week on the Tim Kernan show from the home loan expert dot.

"Yeah. Yeah, that plays a big part. But still you gotta have the right equipment, and I think is his equipment is a little inferior so huge equipment in the game. I just wanted to see him in the red on Sunday, but I never thought, especially after those first you holes and he lost three strokes for the field on those first who holds that he would be making the charge. I happen to be greenside for. Nine where he hit the birdie and then he stuck the shot on fifty. You could feel it feel it around the course. And of course we had the television on eighteen. So you start hearing all the roars. You know, it's like it's often a distance, and then all of a sudden it gets closer gets closer and there's a, there's an excitement that that happens when when he's in in hunt on Sunday, and he get a fist pump to and never gonna fist pump when he doesn't win. You got this pup on the seventy second hole, right? And then he walks across and I'm telling you that bridge was the best that was shot of the tournament. That was in that was the only thing that was lacking right there, Tim, stopping and enjoying them? Yeah. Yeah, you know, I think that if he stops right there, that's a shot for the ages because it was a sea of people and showing their appreciation for what he brings to the sport deal. I do you know him in any way. I don't feel that way. We've, we've met on several occasions and actually Jackie Joyner and I were they're on. The last Wednesday. So we got to see him and take a picture with him on Wednesday, but not might that he, he doesn't allow himself to to get real close to a lot of people. And you know, once that incident came up, he he really shut down and really, you You know. know, which is unfortunate. So throughout that whole week, we kept hearing Ozzie Smith played a huge role in this. And honestly, I had no idea. So what what, what did you do. I mean, it must be like. Stay stay in in the background. As I said earlier, you know, it was. It was everybody. It was the great membership. Bell. Rave was people. I had gloss bog. Mike, the cola. One guy that I think that his name's not mentioned the whole. His name is Joe Stranka Joe Darinka when we originally talked about getting the championship here was the CEO the PGA at the time, big baseball fan. And I think this is where this is where we got lucky being the baseball fan. He took a chance on Saint Louis because of his release. Well, because of our relationship, he saw what I was trying to do with the PGA reach foundation, which is an organization. I became president of eight nine years ago with the help of a guy who got me involved in golf by name, Mike Murphy, an old pro around the area who asked me to be a part of Greenaway fairness to golf here in this area and trying to help grow it. I'd give him thoughts of going back to San Diego and he said, you know what? Just give give give us a give this thing a try. And I so president, you know, I said, I don't. I don't want the responsibility of being president because you know, just too much time. I, I like my time and I'm and I'm trying to get better at the game too, you know? So I don't want to have it consume all my time. He says, no, you don't. You don't have to do that. We need a face. And so through that and through the meeting with the PGA we were able to leverage the the twenty thirteen senior championship. And we told them if we take the twenty thirteen that we'd like to be considered for the one hundred and Jost Aranka call us one day and said, hey, you know, you guys got the one hundredth PGA championship. So it was through that relationship and the conversations and things that we had that we were able to land. One of the the biggest championships in in Saint Louis history, and it was great. But like I say it was it was everybody contributing, you know, Josh Riley, who was the executive director at the time who as like a third base coach has moved on to bigger and better things with the PGA. So Allie wells is taken his place..

"So the sponsor of our studios Ozzie Smith kind enough to come into the studios face to face interview talking it over lot of cardinal baseball discussion. So good stuff on, like I said, Dexter Fowler free agents and Saint Louis perception of Saint Louis for free agents, Jim Edmonds, and the hall of fame and that vote, which confused the hell out of him. And and then also what we start out with here and that is the PGA championship and the game of golf in his love for his role in bringing the PGA championship to Saint Louis. Ozzy a pleasure and honor. Thank you so much for coming in. Well, Tim, thank you for having me. Yeah, I, I know everybody wants to hear me talk baseball with you. Gotta start with golf. I guy who comes still on a high from. The championship. We're all we're all on a high and you know, looking at that looking back that week, one of the most exciting waste of your golf, even if you're not a golf and you know it had to be exciting for the city, and it was a combination of a lot of people doing a lot of work to to bring something like this to us. You know, when when we started talking about this, maybe eight almost ten years ago that what it was. Yeah, it was. It was quite a while ago. And in the meantime, we had accepted the senior championship. Right? And so to have the opportunity to to host a the one hundred, not just the champion, but the one hundred PGA championship and get a chance to see the world's best was that was a special week, I mean, so where were you on Sunday. I was parked on number two where I could see number eleven and number two as a nice spot. Now, two and three and I was there for a couple of days and then then I would make my way to eighteen. So those two spots I thought were the best spots to be able to see all of the action in turn out pretty good. So you there for tiger on eighteen and the burdens that was it was. I think most of the people work their way down there. You know, after I saw him after Tito phone three than I made my way down the eighteen and you know, got myself in position because I knew that the excitement and stuff that have been created and just a mere fact that he was there on Sunday and had a chance then have to win it. But he had a chance in his last two tournaments. You know, he's shown that we, we keep thinking while he's back. He's back his back into any in in doesn't work out. I think that you can see that even when it does and he still the dial. He's still the, he's the needs the needle that that makes it work and he's good for golf, and it was great to see him here for full week. All I wanted to see and especially after the first two holes, I'm sure you're talking about any bogeys which a lot of people did. But number. I'm gonna tell you number ten. First of all, very tough whole holes. Five, it's it's, it's a part is impart five for for most of right, and they turned it into a poor four. But if you're not in the fairway, you're not gonna and you gotta hit you, you gotta hit a straight, and if you don't hit a straight and you end up into rough, you gotta chip out, especially at eight thirty in the morning. It's right here. It's going to be the ball's not carry and and stuff. And you know he's been Radic would his driver, and I've always, it's been my contention that. I don't think he has the right shaft because that thing just keeps it just keeps going right, right. Writing at some point in time with all the technology and stuff today, which from a technology standpoint, you see changed his putter? Yes, right thing, which was the right thing to do. And I think that he was he was one of those guys that was reluctant one of those old school guys that were the reluctant to change. But you gotta change with the times and I think that he sees that now he realizes that and hopefully he'll get the get this shaft thing. Right? Because you know when you losing it to the right like that all the time, then mechanics and and stuff..

"That is here now or twin notes from around the league and it was not nagin that you know because this week in baseball was what we that's how that's how we got our information once a week to week on saturdays you know and it was just a great it was it was a great time i think there was a great appreciation for the way the game was played in our era and i'm going to be a little biased in the in the in the generation that i played in because i think that baseball was played the way we all watching baseball and you look at the guys that i was on the all star teams with you know i went fifteen times and i look at you look at all of those guys in over half of those guys have made they'll all start are all fame yup you play with sat eero was one of the and that's why i say i think that that was one of the best eras in in in baseball history isn't it crazy though what i what i love and what was amazing was that whitey and i don't know how much he had a hand in it and did he talk to you guys about the way the game was played with vince coleman with you willing to give let me say this i think that for why you have to be able to figure out the best way to win right your your your best way to win and when you play them big nationally ballparks this was the difference between american league nationally and the two places that whitey managed just happened to be two of the most spacious ballparks in all of baseball kansas city and saint louis which will pretty much to say huge on astroturf astroturf so you had to have good speed you have to have people cover ground and had to have pitching and one of the things that was important for him.

"Hitting this district time it just happened to stick in my hand i was able to scramble my feet and throw them out at first base and it was that play that people start saying this young kid has arrived because the next morning i woke up and keep in mind as a rookie i had no idea what had really just transpired but when i heard the radio the next morning this guy says now i've been watching baseball the longtime and i think i just saw the greatest player that i've ever seen and i'm saying wow just doing what actually come what comes to me instinctually but re digressing here i can remember alvin dark who signed me with the san diego padres he gets fired as bring trading and i remember him saying to me he says come on sit down in his off yes he says hey these things happen in baseball all the time he says i've been around baseball longtime he said all you have to do is continue to do what you doing pick the ball up and throw it across the diamond he says some because you're going to be a great battling mazing you'll never forget that if we get that confidence and that the opportunity to to play in the big leagues and and then talk about that i think about that play if that play happens today you're on ten pm sports center with van pell got the headset on your on the field that play goes into the espy's play of the year and then it becomes but for that play to still resonate in that way with somebody on the radio gone that may be the best player i saw we remember seeing that play this week in baseball member mel allen how about that hell away everybody this is mel out and welcome to this week in baseball than.

"I could get about right you know but it was it was grains because yeah because we have become very good friends spring training and still that close today he's back with yes now coach back on the t which i think is an outsider in a huge fan great move i told people that are clubbed up better this this winter without before we made any trae because willie because willion oh kim we are the biggest okano fan back you know the secret weapon in and i think that we had a chance to see how much he meant to the club over this last two years where he was gone and you know i go to spring training and i go in the pitcher from the catchers report you know so i'm i'm working out with the guys and it was very surprising to me that they were not better defensively than they were yeah and i think that that's a direct reflection on the fact that will kindle was not here to work with the guys every day and he can work with everybody in every position everybody he can t pick out every little thing that you're doing all right and wrong and that's what they were that's what the club was missing they were missing that ersan who was going to instill the importance of us playing the way people have become accustomed cardinal baseball being played best fundamentally sound i mean you were all about what was amazing about you for us just as outsiders watching you're always the amazing defensive like you brought the defense i remember watching a video and you got to remind me what it was on i think it was on the baseball bunch before you ever of you taking a racket ball and throwing it against stairs you see get to get your hand eye coordination that book back in that back in the day when we were growing up and i grew up in south central los angeles you know we spent a lot of time outside.

"Yeah you know so i'm saying well even if you do get traded you know at least you know you make them pay for but in this instance it was a little different because when whitey came out he didn't know whitey herzog came out he had no idea that i had a no trade clause because it was unheard of for three or four year player to have no trade but anyway he got back to saint louis and he realized that that that was kind of a stumbling block because for me certainly playing in san diego and now come in the site lewis and it was the winter on so on yeah i'm going from sunshine eighty degrees yeah so you know in the back of my mind i'm thinking that well you know if i do go i at least i'm going to place where i'm wanted right true in everybody wants to be in a place where they're wanted and for all of us you know there's always questions we even question ourselves as to whether or not we as good as we think we are all do it all the time in comedy all the time you know so we're no difference as players you know how how how good i'ma and been getting the opportunity to come over here and play for an organization that was rich in tradition but cardinals were and being a player that was highly sought after once the once this deal was consummated let me back up here a little bit once this deal was consummated in the way that the deal was consummated is that once he found out that i have no trade clause in my contract he said.
