The chaotic Trump-Kim summit aftermath, explained
"Now to an international development that's being closely watching the bay area, President Trump and North Korean leader, Kim Jong UN abruptly ended their summit in Vietnam this week after they failed to reach a deal to denuclearized Korean peninsula. President Trump's at North Korea wanted the lifting of all international sanctions in exchange for closing only one nuclear site. But North Korea's foreign minister disagreed contending North Korea. Only wanted partial sanctions relief to end if enrichment of nuclear material no announcement has been made on future talks still secretary of state, Mike Pompeo and President Trump stressed that progress had been made since the first meeting between the two leaders last year in Singapore. Joining us now is young Lee deputy director of the career program at Stanford University. Nice to have you here. Thank you for having me too. So you article as recently as this week for the new site the diplomat talking about what you call the intimate bond between President Trump and the Kim Jong UN then one day after. Article the summit abruptly ends. How would you characterize their relationship now? Well, I think it did abruptly end. But the relationship steamed seems to be still in not bad in terms for share. It seems like when they want when Trump walked away didn't mention that. They're still willing to negotiate one thing that was notice boy is that North Korea. Presented this result in their own domestic news is they never mentioned that front walked away that they're still working towards making progress. So I think they're both of them are trying to maintain the close ties and finally hopeful come up next. But this was their second summit in eight months. They had much more time this time around than they did in during the Thompson Singapore to prepare to kind of think ahead about what the deal might be. Some why wasn't progress. More practice made. Yes, it is somewhat. Unexpected. Even the North Korean when the diplomatic teams met together earlier last week to actually work out the details before going into the summit. But this has happened. So there seems to have been an unexpected factor that came up during their talks factor was and I think. North Koreans put on a wanted something bigger than that was initially discussed the pawn and. So I think President Trump back out of that deal. How much of a role? Do you think the politics in this country had in what happened during those talks thing in because he was overseas? I'm sure that that the North Koreans especially Kim Jong UN put like miss the drama that was unfolding here. Michael Cohen testimony did that affect President Trump's fanning and leverage in the negotiations. That is a very quick observation to North Koreans observe US politics very closely, and they know that there is election cycle here. And I think they've followed on the recent turn of events with the Cohen on testimony yesterday Bill, and maybe I think that factored in their decision of committee. Trump is willing to strike a bigger deal to divert attention to this and maybe they put on a bigger package than they had initially agreed upon. And maybe hopefully, a thinning that Trump with action bite it what kinds of sanctions are they most focused on what do they want lifted? So one thing we learn out of this is that really do matter for them, right? Was the sanctions that were really keen on sanctions. And so I've actually done some research on sanctions myself on by Jeff I am an economist of my research into North Korea initially was looking to how sanctions affected North Korean economy. And one thing I found was that especially up until two thousand thirteen or sell. The canyon leads tried to shield negative impact of sanctions at the cost of the marginal hinterlands, but recent round of sanctions the so-called maximum pressures pressure. Sanctions that were levied since two thousand sixteen target exports of coil iron ore minerals, which are the major source of revenue for our country and restore. Ban imports of oil or luxury goods what that does is. It targets that leads of Kenya. And they're the ones who are feeling the crunch of the pain now as well and elites mattered thinking of the leads to starting to hurt than than you would think that the pressure on Kim Jong wobble building right to get the sanctions lifted. So what do you think he will do next? Is there a risk here that he will escalate nuclear fuel production to put pressure on President Trump to lift those sanctions. Well, I think that would be a risky move. And first of all yesterday, the North Koreans actually gave pets release where they're on foreign minister said that they would not continue testing. I think that's the right direction. If once they start testing basic background zero. So I think that's not the way they would want to pursue this. But I think maintaining channels of negotiation and conversation will be the critical point forward for them to try to release relax some sanctions and developed into Konami. And so what do you think we'll need to happen now to bring them back to the negotiation table, it is a difficult situation. But I think they'll tied to maintain. Some sort of weight communicate with the US, obviously believe in office didn't materialize. But if you mean, currently the past couple of months, I believe onto North Koreans and the US diplomatic teams have been in good relations. So if they continue this path there might be some hope for them, a new a better outcome and just real quickly just fifteen seconds left. But, you know, President Trump also said that he and Kim Jong own discussed the case of Otto warmbier the American college student who died last year after being imprisoned in North Korea and said he takes him at his word that he didn't know about one beers medical condition. Is that possible that he wouldn't know that I am also skeptical about that he would know about this given how important crave the situation was I would imagine you would have now. All right. Young the deputy director of Stanford's career program. Thank you so much for joining us. Thank you for having me.

Did he tell you that he did not Kim Jong tell you feel badly about it for Kim Jong felt badly about what happened to Otto warmbier? He must not have had any knowledge of what was going on in this country with rough prison camps run by rough people who are told what to do roughly by someone known got. But he continues on he had more to say because you think maybe just talking off in a box and could come out of it. Let's let his last words on this go speak to him. He felt very badly. But he knew the case very well. But he knew. Later, and you got a lot of people big country a lot of people and in those prisons in those camps. You have a lot of people and some really bad things happen to auto some really really bad thing. Why are you what he tells me? He tells me that he didn't know about it. So although you make spec many of us, the young Turks, and maybe some libs progresses outraged by this belief in in Kim Jong UN over actually what was pretty much the evidence of what actually happened to the kid, but as of today out of warmbier family, his parents came out with a statement, and they said we've been respectful during this summit process. "And India are on the brink of war. Joining us on the KOMO news line is military analysts. Barry, McCaffrey, sir. How could things escalate in what is going on? Well, this is one of the more dangerous parts of the world imaginable to gigantic nations. They have. Chest over each other as the primary national security threat since independence. It's you certainly had a kind of competition not just driven by political aspirations or geographic. Territories also religious in nature. It's resulted in three very significant dangerous wars being fought Norwegian only now there are nuclear weapons states involved. So I think it is a very dangerous situation. Look at the end of the day. I spent a lot of time going in and out of this region. Over the years at the end of the day, the Pakistani and the Indians are both armed with conventional forces that routinely are engaged in combat each other. If it came to all out war, the Indians could invade and defeat Pakistan in ninety days at which point I am confident. The Pakistanis will use nukes both sides probably have one hundred fifty nuclear weapons or more. And so the. Potential for tremendous escalation and loss of life is ever present there. But I think the two has a state or worried about their own political base. So there's a danger of getting out of control. But the notion of Armageddon ought to be so frightening to both political stablishment and the senior military leadership. It's hard to imagine them going there for the people who might be rolling their eyes here and saying what do I care that's a world away? Explain in your opinion. Why this matter? Arguably India's the largest democracy in the face of the earth. It's a counterpoint many ways to China with whom we have enormous strategic concerns. You know, great economic cooperation increasing political cooperation with China. But at the end of the day, we're in a national strategic standoff with the Chinese and the Indians are part of cheating balance in the region Pakistanis of ended up to facto is an ally of semi ally of the Chinese so all these things are linked. Yes, we do have to care nuclear war anywhere in the face of the earth would be an utter disaster for mankind. And by the way, our continued presence in Afghanistan is fundamentally affected by how we deal with the Pakistani government who provides refuge, in many cases to elements of the Taliban or the Connie network. So yeah, I think America's interests are engaged. We do have to be. Thoughtful and the prevention of conflict should be a number one goal of US foreign policy retired four-star General, Barry, McCaffrey. Thank you, sir. All right with the House Republican leader. Mccarthy was pressed about President Trump's comments about Kim and American Otto warmbier after their second summit in Hanoi. Trump said he believed him when the North Korean leader told him he was not aware of warm beers treatment ABC's, Karen Travers is in Hanoi. Where she says experts believe Kim knew exactly what was happening to warmbier. Yeah. I mean, the tight control he has over his country. I mean, did he order it? That's not what. Being alleged. But the awareness has to be there. The president absolves him of any of the responsibility for outta warmbier staff. And I think there's a frustration on Capitol Hill about that you're gonna see Democrats pushing that, and of course, you couldn't help. But think of the way that the president has accepted Putin's denials that election meddling the way that the president has accepted the crown prince of Saudi Arabia's insistence that he did not order the killing of democracy Shoghi. But at least we got him home to be with his parents where they were so happy to see him even though he was in very tough conditions. His debt is still a mystery. He tells me that he didn't know about it. And I will take him at his word. Mickey Bergman is vice president of the Richardson center for global engagement, and he was one of those who helped negotiate warm beers release right before the student died. Mickey Trump says Kim Jong UN was unaware of the mistreatment of Otto warmbier, you know, the case inside out is that possible. So I I think that's the President Trump probably did not take late himself. Very well. I'm not in the business of defending the president. But I suspect that what he was trying to say is that chairman him indicated to him that he did not know what led to all those condition, and then it was not intentional which is very different than not knowing that he was in that condition. It's still a little I think what still comes across. When you hear President Trump is that he's willing to take Kim Jong UN at his word and not kind of probe or push on this issue. Yes. It does sound like that. And I want to put it. I think I put it in context. The let me if I can tell a little story that will maybe explain why I say what I say about this again because I'm not in the business of defending the president at all. When we learned myself and governor Richardson work with when we negotiating on behalf of the warriors return, we learned of autos medical condition, only after clear the airspace up North Korea. It was shocking was a devastating blow to us and immediately. After of course, we were furious with North Korean counterparts, the ones that we were negotiating with all the way up to the vice phone first of I negotiated with in Pyongyang just a couple of months before that and the North Koreans made an effort with me personally, again, all the way up to the to the vice minister to let me know to conveniently that they didn't know themselves about otas condition when they when the goal eating with me. Now, whether that was correct for not correct. I can talk about in a second. But the point in the value is the days civil enough value and had an interest in our relationship. Go an extra mile to try and convince me that they were not negotiating bad feet. So you were you able to find out any answers to what had happened to Otto warmbier? Wow, how he did end up in a coma. So I have I have my own assessment and analysis based on some information that I have in the interest of protecting the privacy of the won't be or family. I try not to not to indulge in that what I can say is that what would I think was made public as well from it? We know that's what led to this condition was a singular event is not a deterioration over time. Was it happened? Once happened a long time before we got him back home. We'd actually probably happened within a few weeks after his try. Now, what caused it? We don't know. We know that the North Koreans, and that's what I think what was President Trump was not committing arguing that would ever happen was not intentional. But we don't know what what did some sort of trauma, some sort of trauma some single kind of blow. Yes. Some sort of trauma. That's basically called his condition. Now, the one thing I would say they may the if we look historically at the US prisoners detainees. Hostages held in North Korea. Otto warmbier was different than the others. Others came back more Lincoln good health would have an incident like that. And so the auto case was not actually the ruling was an exception to the rule from that perspective. It doesn't take it needs to be very clear. He does not take out of the North Korean accountability full accountability to what happened whether it was intentional. When it was a mistake with her something else happened. They were responsible for his health. As a country, and they're accountable. Howard's parents doing I sold them a couple of months ago. I tried to stay in touch. Look parents fans that lose childlike that's especially their first born. It's devastating. They're coping have two more kids in bottled their decision will do the do not want their other kids live to be defined by it will happen to auto. But when I saw them again, they're they're still grieving, obviously, they will agree forever. But there's still enough portraits of understanding and getting adjusted to two new kind of life. Mickey Bergman helped negotiate the release of the late North Korean hostage Otto, warmbier thank you very much. Thank you. There measles outbreaks popping up all over the world, including here in the US following vaccination rates have a lot to do with it. But could politics be a factor to Jonathan Kennedy thinks so he just global health at Queen Mary university in London, and he's the author of a new study that links the rise of political populism in Europe to skepticism over vaccines there. So put simply we see that countries with high levels of support for populist. Parties also have high levels of vaccine skepticism. So if we look at countries like Greece or Italy, or France, they have very strong, very well supported populist movements. And they also have high levels of vaccine skepticism and also on the other hand, you have countries with low levels of populism and also low levels of vaccines skepticisms, and these are countries like Belgium and like Portugal. What's most concerning about your findings? If we look at the NFL vaccine in particular. Mumps rubella. That's measles-mumps-rubella. You need something like ninety five percents. The population to be vaccinated in order to have what we call hot immunity. So this is having enough people vaccinated so that you don't have outbreaks. And you know, the real sad thing is it's not just the children of vaccine skeptics who suffer. It's actually children who can't be vaccinated for medical reasons because they have compromised immune systems. So this is children, for example, who are suffering from cancer and having chemotherapy, so they can't be vaccinated and these people that suffer also. So it's some of the most vulnerable people in the well the being made more vulnerable by this. That's the that's the most concerning thing for me, people don't vaccinate their kids for all sorts of reasons. I mean in the US it's its way across the political spectrum a lot of kind of, you know, progressive type stone, and then there's religious concerns there. Somebody had a bad experience. There. There's all sorts of reasons I wonder in in your study. I mean, how do you? How do you assign it to a political populism, and how do you make it's a correlation? But how do you say that? That's the reason why I think we have to look at what populism fundamentally is. And we often think about populism is just being in the sphere of politics, but actually populism is much more far-reaching than that populism is a distrust and hostility towards elites and experts and so in the political sphere. This seems to be leading to an increase in support for anti-establishment parties and the rejection of the traditionally path center left center, right parties, one of the most famous anti vaccines. Of course, Andrew Wakefield discredited. Former doctor he he famously wrote that article in one thousand nine hundred eight in the Lancet linking vaccines to autism. It was totally discredited. Why why do you think that it still has currency that view? I mean, I'm not really sure it's been tightly discredited. Say Wakefield's being struck off as a doctor. He can no longer practices, the doctor and the boss majority of medics enough people with knowledge of public health, give his ideas, no currency whatsoever. I guess the reason why he he still has some support and actually has quite a lot of support. Right. He's he's still remarkably popular among some people. I think he attended one of President Trump's inaugural balls. Yes. He did. They've had conversations was reported in the guardian to be dating. I and so in a way he's doing he's doing very well. But I think the reason why his his ideas still have currency is because they fit well with this post truth era or an area where there's been at the K in truth and an increase in distrust in the states and in big business, and in authorities of all sorts Jonathan Kennedy is the author of a new study that links the rise of populism to skepticism over vaccines teaches global health at Queen Mary university in London.
