Will Smith Finally 'Apologizes' to Chris Rock

"I'm sure a lot of you have seen Will Smith's videotaped apology to Chris Rock. Four months after smacking him in front of 17 million people at the Oscars, Smith is lucky the Oscars audience isn't what is back when people wanted to see elegant movie stars back in the day. Because back as recent as 1998, 56 million viewers tuned in. But still, 17 million ain't ain't nobody by any means. But anyhow, many of you watched Will Smith's awful apology. And I hope you saw right through the bullshit. Because there were keywords said and some keywords missing. So let's review to see how much Will Smith actually gives a shit. He actually said, right into the camera, two things. One, disappointing people as my central trauma. Okay, stop. No one says my central trauma. Unless it's fresh from the mouth of their therapist. Those words were carefully thought out, carefully written out. It's not sincere, you gotta take it for what it's worth, two cents. He continued. I hate when I let people down. So it hurts me, psychologically, and emotionally, that I didn't live up to people's image and impression of me. Again, full stop. How did you know our image and impression of him? But what does he know? Who's told him? It's gone. The work I'm trying to do is this. I'm deeply remorseful, and I'm trying to be remorseful without being ashamed of myself. Okay, hold it right there, big boy. You need to be ashamed of yourself, bro

What was your favorite moment of the Oscars? For me was because we've been watching it in my house for the last three months was watching the performance of, we don't talk about Bruno from Encanto. The smiles around my house like it was that moment where it's like, I could understand what they say when a song or a movie brings people together. It was that fun, you know? It put a smile on my face. I love it. I love it. I love it. Explain to people who don't have children like my good self, how big is this movement? I mean, the joke a few years ago was like, oh, frozen this, frozen that frozen this. It's now in kanto. Like, you know what I mean? It's that big. You start swapping out words instead of Bruno. You start saying each other's name. We don't talk about you. You know I love it. So you said that it didn't win because I think Billie Eilish won with her brother for No Time to Die. James Bond will here's the thing. So No Time to Die one because it was nominated. We don't talk about Bruno wasn't nominated. Lynn put in a different song that he felt encompassed the movie the best, which I understand, but I think if Bruno at the time was submitted, but again, Lin-Manuel Miranda even said, you don't know. You know what I mean? Like you don't know what's going through just like blow up and what song is just gonna be like, eh, you know? They picked the wrong song turn nominate otherwise today, Lin would have had an Oscar. He wasn't there last night because his wife is positive with COVID and nicest of the day and naughtiest of the day is the fact that we're not talking about all these incredible winners. Let me give you some of their names. Ariana debus. Who is the second Latina to win an acting award? Guess who the first one was? Rita Moreno. In 1969 for the same part in west side story. She's also to the first openly queer woman of color to win an acting award and I loved when she said there is a place for us, which is from a song in west side story. "Will at the Golden Globes or anywhere now? I still think it's different. Think about how much Will Smith has had to go through over the last two weeks ever since that red table talk of uncoupling of how many times people have just pushed them and in questioned him and poked fun at him and then all of a sudden on probably arguably his biggest night where he wins an award, you're going to you're just going to chop them off at the knees because at the end of the day, no one's going to look at Jada, they're going to look at will. They're going to say, oh, look at will, you know? Well did bring all this up himself when you talk about Robin Roberts. She was promoting his book. But he talks constantly about his relationship with Jada on the red table that's his wife show. Okay. And so the two of them sat there and talked about their relationship for the ratings and they were allowed to say things to one another. My point of view though is and I do understand what you're saying is that we should be kinder to one another but you can't have a show about kindness and respect and love in for each other and then somebody gets up and slaps somebody in the face. He physically hit him. But with that too, you can't sit there and make fun of someone's wife and then say it wasn't a joke about your wife. It was about the movie franchise. It doesn't make sense. He was going after he was making a joke about his wife and he just not a true comedian, like a comedian that was hard in their ways would have said, you know what? Yes, it was a joke about your wife. He didn't. He went, he went the other way, meaning that it was true. It was a joke about his wife, you know? He's a joke about jata and her hair loss. Not funny, and you know, kind of rude, particularly because we know that she has alopecia. She's been very honest about that. But there's a place for physical violence now like now we're allowed to slap people around the face if we don't like what they're saying for me, my head exploded. I was so uncomfortable. I know the crowd has uncomfortable moving forward now. There's conversations about what should happen. Should he lose his Oscar now? No. There are very, very, very strict rules for people that have the Oscar, not many people do. And really these sort of popped up or were reinforced after the Harvey wine scene scandal. So there's rules of conduct here. And one of them is certainly not physical violence. So I reached out to the Oscar people. They have not responded yet. The other question is, there's a lot of questions right. Yeah, I'm trying to get back to my head exploded. The other question that's coming up is could he be arrested? I reached out to the LAPD and spoke to them. They said that they are obviously aware of the incident, but Chris Rock has not filed a complaint and until he does, they will not investigate this, but if he does, they will investigate it and hey, it's all there on video and when you tell the court, you know, he made fun of my wife, so by allowed to attack him, that is not gonna hold up. He physically attacked somebody. That's where I'll argue with you, rob shooter, where in a, with a jury sitting there hearing the story and then obviously hearing the evidence and I think 9 times out of ten, people will side, especially if they have a spouse or a significant other, they're going to stick up for them, you know? I think emotionally you're right here. If somebody made fun of Bruce well, that's what I'm saying. Like, with a group of peers with a jury. You've got to follow the law. Of course you do. And America to punch somebody in the face. You could call me horrible names. You could call Darby, my doggie, you called cold brews. Horrible names. I'm not allowed to punch you. And I like that law. Well, of course, but I can also argue that I was provoked to, you know? You provoked me to punch you. And I hope that you got convicted, Garrett, I really do hear, I hate physical violence as well. I hear you when I was like people slapping each other and I was at a really rough school and it's quite scary and to be watching this particularly a place that claims they're for love and harmony and peace and we've all got to support each other and everybody has rights and then for them to have this happen and everybody pretended to get that part. Everybody pretended that nothing happened apart from Amy Schumer. Everybody just carry on. Did he try to sort of say something but failed a little bit there, but not let's not blame him. It's the night wasn't about him. Do you think you know did he very well from working with him? Do you actually think after the Oscars he sought out will end it Chris Rock at a party or did he knew he could get a photograph out of it which he could have? Did he would have loved nothing more than sitting at the Vanity Fair party with Chris on one side will on the other like he was brokering peace in the Middle East like did he know to press opportunity but knowing diddy I would say he would be nervous. Like that's a huge audience millions and millions of people watching yeah I don't think he would like that to really uncomfortable position what he could do and then you gotta read the room a little bit so you know the room is split early reports today are a lot of celebrities really supported will and so afterwards he won. So what do you do then do you give him a stand in ovation will is part of Hollywood he is loved in Hollywood. Do we stand up and give a man a standing ovation that is just punched somebody slapped somebody else or do we sit down? Do we leave what you're leaving it though? It's like he just attacked him. Chris Rock we say it all the time like he could sit there and take it but it would like you know where the joke was coming from. It was going directly at someone and then to say that there's this fine line of like as a comedian. I'm allowed to say whatever. No, just like in anything in real life you could say whatever, but you also have to stand up for your actions. So he offended the man's wife. You know, I get it. I understand it. I like that we're on different sides next. I think a lot of people are. Some people are really standing up for will today. Tiffany Haddish has put out a statement saying he was defending his wife. It's the most beautiful thing she's ever seen. And a lot of people that were very uncomfortable and not really making statements, they're just sort of disappearing. They don't want to talk about it. I had reporters at the party afterwards will turned up at Vanity Fair, and he was spotted dancing and joking Jada was there. Oh, after the incident, they held hands Garrett for the rest of the night I had reporters watch them so they were holding hands will skipped the press room. So after you win, you normally exit stage left or stage right. And you go straight into the press room, will did not do that. So after he got his Oscar, he then went back into the audience and sat there holding his Oscar in one hand and Jada's hand in the other you know the red table talk is open for business today. It's going to be the biggest episode ever and they will talk about this again his books probably going to spike. I'm not saying he did this for either celebrities love publicity, but they can also be real people and I think this is a real in the moment reaction. So it will be interesting though, so this weekend in Atlantic City, New Jersey, Chris Rock is taking the stage. For so I guess his first show, it's a warmup show because he's going out on tour with Kevin Hart. And it'll be interesting to say, see and.

"A lot of Oscar films are like a one and done. You see them one time, and then you're like, like a director that does everybody should watch this film. And then you forget about it. Oh, I mean, it's like, okay, Star Wars, which was maybe one of the most innovative movies and set the bar for the first time. Was nominated for best picture. It was known for a ton of, and it won some special. They created some new categories for it. Didn't they disqualify it for some things because they're like, oh, you can't have computer generated imagery. I mean, and then they gave us a special awards on that account. It's going to be a little fuller bodied, a little heavier. Which I enjoyed. Darker too. It's darker, it's richer, it's a little bit like, I think fruitier. It's prism. And gotcha. The label. Yeah. And again, it's probably ten, maybe $12. Yeah. I liked the prisma better than the Spanish. Yeah. I mean, I think I do too because it's like it has a little more of that kind of oomph if you're looking for it. It's like it has a little more body. So if you're looking for something to drink during the Oscar podcast, which can go on for hours. It has this might not ever end. Yes. Yeah. I mean, because it's like the Johnny Carson joke back in the day was the Oscars are thrilling to our experience spread out over four and a half hours. Yeah. And I wish you guys could hear our outtakes. I don't wish you would hear that. It's not good. We are getting pretty boozy. We've had too much wine. Yes. The prisma is going to be a good full body drinking rose that still doesn't sit heavy. So you can drink quite a bit of it. First, why did you laugh? Because now you're making me laugh, man. I love you. Just acknowledge the chocolate and move on. So the prisma is Chilean? It's true. From the Casa maca valley of Chile. And again, pretty affordable, pretty easy drinking. I know they do all the white valley, the costume walker. Okay. And Casablanca is also a city in Morocco. Morocco. Yes. Which is also a movie, which won best picture in 1942. So there you go. Good tired. Yeah. Nice. Cost Blanca valley in Chile. Yeah, because at one point Costa Lanka, Morocco was a Spanish protectorate. But until it was absorbed by the French before World War II. Much like most of the South America, it was a Spanish protectorate. Exactly. We did like a whole continent. I just let it go. Today he's doing the Groundhog Day where it's like, oh, you speak French. So I'm going to go over because I've seen almost all the best picture nominees. And so I can give you kind of a heads up over all of them. Of these. I mean, Belfast is a really good movie. All right. What's it about? And it is basically his autobiographical look at him growing up in Belfast during the late 60s during the IRA during the troubles during the bombings. And what it was like to be a kid living in a major city that's kind of underneath the Civil War..

It's ridiculous i am not about it very strange. Also my octopus teacher superman i. That movie was fine. I enjoyed it all of those other movies. I just i really loved crip camp. That was when i was rooting for everything that collective was supposed to be amazing Time was supposed to be amazing. These movies are actually tackling real things and yet maisy with us on that. I know i just even. Layla seen none of them. Didn't know anything about my octopus teacher. And they just kind of looked at me and we're looking to me like you are my pop culture oscars guru explained to me. What just happened. And i was like what just happened is fucking nonsense. Sorry i shouldn't make us is like we're gonna take our oscar and go. It was super weird. Tyler perry getting a crazy big humanitarian award. This is a tricky one. I i i get that. He's done a lot of great stuff especially for like black filmmakers and the atlanta sort of black sort of film community. he's optics and his intent are great. "But i think you know when you're producing a show like that. The the the reward was worth the risk. Because if that moment had played out i think it would have been very satisfying emotional conclusion. But it didn't work out that way. And i think there's no way to control that unless you're not going to have the unknown nature of who's winning and i think that's a very or has been at least a very important part of these award shows that you have to preserve so if you're going to preserve that we don't the producers don't know who won before it's announced on stage then you can't criticize moments like that for not playing out the way they hoped or the way you would have liked. That's just part of something you have to watch. So i thought a lot of people you know people have said it's joyless that it was private that it was intimate. It wasn't something they were looking for. And i would say if they were looking for that. I think it's misplaced to look for that. In the oscar telecast going forward. I think that there were plenty of amazing moments People will be talking about you know. I actually liked all of the speeches so much more than i have liked in years past. I just thought. I got more out of them and people were funnier. Harrison ford was great The woman who won for monari was amazing. That was that was probably the best speech tonight..

"We all want to listen well and we all fall short. On this episode oscar trimboli returns to show us the four habits. That derail are listening and how we can all do better. This is coaching for leaders episode. Five hundred produced by innovate learning maximizing human potential breeding stew from orange county california. This is coaching for leaders. And i'm your host. Dave steinhoff iak leaders are born. They're made in this weekly show. Helps you discover leadership wisdom through insightful conversations. Of course so much of conversation is about listening. Listening is a skill so many of us have wanted to improve on it as a skill. Many of us believe we are at least decent add if not above average and it is so important for leadership the ability to listen and yet it is a struggle also for so many of us. Today i'm so glad to welcome back to the show Someone who is just an expert in listening is going to help us to derail some of the four habits that tend to keep us from listening. Well glad to welcome back to the show. Oscar trimboli oscar is a mentor coach speaker and author. He was a director at microsoft for over a decade headed up the ms office division in australia today. He works with leadership teams and their organizations on the importance of clarity to create change. How to embrace the digital economy and the role values play in the achievement of your purpose. He is the author of the book. Deep listening impact beyond words oscar. So glad to have you back on the show. Get i'd i've Excited to spend a little bit more time gang a little bit deeper into what we started off a year ago and it's been really joyful to have people from many many different parts of the world who are fans of yours. Ask me questions to god. Little bit deeper on listening. So thanks for the opportunity to come back oscar. The privileges mine. And as i was thinking about this conversation that i mentioned in the introduction that a lot of us especially in this community we like to think of ourselves as good listeners and i think we all recognize we can get better and yet the statistic is interesting that something like eighty percent of people feel like they are above average there. Listening to don't pay everybody can tell you other people terrible listeners. That that i find it very easy to find fault in others but the themselves they were amazing listeners. And this is one of the fundamental problems of of listening. We awhile goodies. Because we honestly haven't been told that we don't have a framework to know what poll better average great even looks like why i think our invitation is very much going to be hopefully to surface some of these villains as you call them that tend to show up in our listening and they shop a little differently for all of us but there are of course some patterns and if we can recognize those patterns it can be helpful for us to not necessarily not make the mistakes. Because we're still going to make the mistakes. But i think that we would notice them a bit faster in the moment. We're not listening. Well am i capturing that well. Yeah and when i speak on the topic or do some consulting work out. What's i'm not a better listener than you will notice on distracted foster than you. I'll notice they stay right louis quicker than you because i know what they liable are on what the characteristics are fine them quicker myself then you can yet. With knowledge people will be able to get those characteristics of those villains much quicker which will bring them back into the conversation much faster so the challenge with the listening is simply that of attention and spend a little bit of time with people and our surprise. The first time said this. I said do you give attention in a conversation while you're listening do you pay attention in compensation while you're listening and wanna said was giving attention is an act of generosity. It's an active curiosity. It's it's an openness in a conversation whereas paying attention feels like it's taxation if feels like something demanded of you and it's not necessarily coming from applies of generosity. It's just something on to do before. I do the next thing so the each of us. That's that's the invitation out. mike. I you giving attention why you paying attention. That's the starting point to know where you are on that listening journey because you know we might have to pay attention to our children. We might have to pay attention to our parents yet. We might give attention to a manager or a customer and it's quite interesting. At what point do you notice. You'll giving a complete non divided attention versus those way. You have to pay attention. I think that's the starting point in the journey for most of us they think about a lot of the training that i've seen over the years had been through myself around listening. A lot of it falls into the category of things. I'd probably put in that bucket of paying attention of making eye contact nodding of summarizing what the person has said and those are important tactical steps. Perhaps however you can do all of those things and not really be listening. well which. i'm sure we'll get to more here in a moment. But i i think the invitation will be to get beyond that and to notice that tendency and ourselves and so let's look at these and there's four of them and i should say here upfront that a wonderful resource that you have created and it's this beautiful quiz that you can take. It just takes a couple of minutes and to be able to identify where these show up for each one of us. And you and i both taken the quiz and we'll talk about our results here abed but as folks are listening there will be some some ways to dive on this a really practical way and then some action steps that come out of it and the first of these villains is. The villain is being the dramatic listener. What is the dramatic listener. Look like and sound like dramatic listener. Lobs listening to story thi- into your story and i love your story tickly elements of emotion. So if you would have to think about the primary distinction for the dramatic listener then listen for emotional that listen to feelings and win our debrief groups way with down this you can. He the dramatic listeners. Talk to the breakout group ball. It was really listening for how they felt in that situation or was feeling really frustrated in that situation..

I didn't say anything bad about how I don't, but I don't WanNa. be in competition with Mario Lopez. I happen to know he's not going to be available to host the Oscars pre show next year. We recently went on a Whitewater rafting trip together and I think he's going to be laid up for a while. Oh my God does something happen Mario Lopez was he injured nothing track. No, it's nothing. I was supposed to be rowing, but I got hungry and I reached into my lunch sack for Venison Jerky I swear. I only put the or down for like three minutes tops anyway Mario Lopez going to be fine America. Nothing, a full body cast and six months of intense rehabilitation won't fix, so get well. Soon Mario. We! Love Your Buddy Ryan. Did you intentionally causal? Whitewater rafting accident with Mario Lopez so that you could get a chance to possibly host the red carpet pre show the Oscars next year. No in Oh spells. No, I can't believe you'd even make that accusation. That is so sick Carolina. You have a sick mind. Who are you wearing tonight, Carolina it appears you've just dressed in sweatpants. T shirt from what does that crank Yankers? That's a funny show. Yeah, but this is the Oscars. My God you look like trash. Okay I now. Just being bitchy like the late great. Joan rivers recipes. If you're just going to be insulting, I can lico stay. You can submit this tape. The red carpet hosting gig is always a two hander. And if you could just died Leeza Gibbons, that'd be great, I'll do my best buy I'd. I didn't come unprepared for this since there's no way for us to know what boring films are going to be the big winners next year because they haven't come out yet. I went and pulled some information from the Sixtieth Academy Awards, which happened in nineteen, Eighty, eight, hundred, eighty eight. Why don't we just do last year's Oscars? So they have a more fresh take on your hosting ability. We'll if I'm being honest. I didn't see any of the movies from last year. Hey! The one that won best picture had subtitled. So you know right? That's an automatic. No from you. They make them too small. They make them to small. When I'm on a teleprompter. They used three hundred point type. Also there was another matter of me. No longer being sent screeners because of a misunderstanding with the union was the misunderstandings really silly I had this neighbor who I swore was stealing packages from in front of my house. Late One night I whipped a dvd of something called uncut Jim Straight through his bedroom window. Shattered the glass. Scared, the Bejesus out of him, that is just awful. That's destruction of property. Someone could have really gotten hurt Mario Lopez on their ravel joke ended up on me because my neighbor took it and made a bunch of copies, and started selling them out of the trunk of his car and that's. Why I don't get screeners anymore to be fair, uncut gems was a really great movie. Haven't seen it because it landed on the floor of my neighbors bedroom, but from what I'm hearing. The sand man was robbed anyway. Can we just go over this one thousand, nine, hundred eight Academy Awards, stuff prepared sure whatever you WanNa. Do they okay now? Our show were not cutting it not by a long shot because there are no Nielsen ratings for podcasts. That's just a thing for TV look. I've seen some numbers Carolina and let me tell you. This Joe Rogan is kicking our. On he's at the top of the Nielsen Ratings and I. Don't think that's ending anytime soon. You have a lot to learn about the BIZ show. Business is a cruel mistress I'm very aware of how tough show-business such a cruel mistress that sometimes certain gentlemen who are stressed out, actually use the services of a professional dominatrix and have an actual cruel mistress hit them on the behind with a whip to take their. Their mind off of the cruel mistress. That is show business I am. I don't want to, I don't ever want to revisit that subject, and it's a whole other subject for a whole other show, which which is not going to do, but it still doesn't really explain why. You started the podcast today like we were hosting the red carpet coverage for the Academy Awards Okay All Right I. Love The with you. Like to have a bunch of wheels, spinning at once and I've I've been through so many ups and downs in my career in the one thing that I've learned is you got to be ready for anything? So I figured. Why not take an episode of the podcast and use it as an audition tape for the people that the American motion picture arts and Sciences to see if maybe me and Leeza gibbons can host next year's Oscars. Has Anyone Call Leeza Gibbons? I do not want to do this with Carolina? You can't just hijack the show and use it as an audition tape for the red carpet, pre show to an award ceremony. Really, what does this show called? The Ron Burgundy podcast okay, and what's my name Ron Burgundy? And what is your name? Carolina? Exactly it's not Leeza gibbons tone. Know what this Liza Gibbons. Have a leg to stand on here. Okay simple. Now leeza gibbons. She has two legs to stand on, and I don't think she would mind me saying they're terrific. have been for a long time. She knows I. Know it the only person who doesn't know it. Is You and that's your fault. You cannot use the podcast as an audition tape for Oscars pre show. It's just so. Terrific, let's throw new commercial and then me and Leeza Gibbons. We'll be back with a special appearance from Oscar. Now Money Laura.

"Welcome back to this going to be a special Oscar. Minnesota Oscars are Live February ninth Sunday on ABC. So as not there earlier this year it seems that they're usually more towards the march so they're doing earlier for some reason. I guess they're just trying to get them out of the way. The big bloated four hour marathon broadcast. Yeah IT IS I. I haven't watched a full Oscar ceremony years because it is just too fucking is attest to the senses I like the day after like the highlights the highs and the Lou who is the host this year. I don't remember having heart and he really look it up. You guys talk off bill. KRISTOL's the dude for a long time when Anita was billy crystal and didn't somebody else. Steve Martin Steve Yeah so who else Johnny Carson Shitload of them. But but I can't think he would be who's the MC Ryan seacrest. They're doing it again. This year where they forego host. They're doing just like like multiple presenters. They've done that in years past periodically they would do like you know we're going to let chase do section of them were yeah. That's par for the best all Hogan come out and do some of them we're GonNa let I mean cadet literally. Paul Hogan did a whole section of our heated a really famous singer. He just pretty much called out like this long. I know you guys are bored. We're just GONNA get moved. Move this along. Yeah you know. Typical leg plainspoken Crocodile Dundee doubting But then you know we'll be Goldberg. Come out for a little bit and do some the any kind of split it up amongst we'll be of times so didn't she have. IBS now are then. I mean yeah she was like. I'm not a spokesperson. Ibm Do a cop movie where her partner was a T.. Rex she also was in a loaded weapon. One remember. She was also in the movie. Eddie where she coaches the Knicks. That was what I thought she was. Also so like. I thought I got confused with like Mike Issues. Get electrified a little bow. And now we're starting starting new podcast with older. That's for another time. Yeah the Whoopi Cask. So we're talking about about the Oscars for a moment and You know I always feel strongly about this. There's always those a couple of movies that they get left out of the mix juicy the Adam Sandler one uncut gems. I have not seen that yet. That's going to be on the on temporary very soon but that was snubbed. Adam Sandler was snubbed and so was visit visit us. The whatever the the Hor- moving that was a key. NPL Jordan Peele Jordan Peele. Yes that was a great or movie. That was snubbed. Book Smart was one of the big ones that I thought was. That's on Hulu great movie. Great comedy I heard it was like basically a female Oh version of super bad advertising that as a female to bat and it was even better and even more intelligent I it was a notch above super bad interesting so I think you could have nominated for best picture Hulu right now. I was thinking about people that the other day The farewell was another one that Chinese American movie. That was really good. That got shut out some of these subtitles. Yes yeah tough without the. Didn't he director say like you'd be amazed. At how many great films are out Sir if you can withstand one inch subtitles and that's true and then because that's like the parasite. Which is the Korean movie that is nominated for the subtitles or was it dubbed Koreans Donaldson? Okay okay sorry it was that director that said yeah and that's a great movie The off seen all of the best picture movies and it's like they're all good movies. I felt like that you could have done something like book smart over Ford Ferrari. I think that's that was a very conventional pick you know because it's like that that traditional feel-good type movie. Yeah I again. I saw that I saw the trailers and I was like no. Yeah even I was like no. It's an a movie but I feel like they're better movies overlooked in favor of that. They and I feel like they have to put their formula movies in there. They after being there. I'm GonNa say this before we get too far. Do you think there are some some movies out there which I mean I know the answer she has but were they were people in the city. Were sitting around the table and said let's make an Oscar movie like. Let's make a movie that we can get nominated for this. Do you think that was one of those movies. It's like because the cast is huge clearly saw way too many of their advertisements. That's type of move. That makes me think like man. They were pushing for big names. We wanted the big name movie. Big Name Actors Hollywood totally does that one hundred and ten percent. It's like it's the famous story about Lennon McCartney when they were starting out and with the Beatles and they were like writing songs and like John Paul would say to each other like you know. Let's write houseboat. Let's try sports car today. Let's write a Lake House now. You know let's ride ourselves swimming. Join Pool you know. Then they set out and McCartney was like you know people act like we were some kind of musical saints but we wanted to make money. We want to get rich. Yeah and I think for the Oscars. That's filmmakers well. They see that as kind of like yeah. Let's make an Oscar. Let's this is our. If it checks the box for Oscars yeah you know so that kind of feel good sport movie and that's how and that was for me even like this seems like a film that they are bad for you have to do has Christian. Bale actually won an academy award. Yes you have to Academy Award winning actors as your lead Su who directed it but it was like for Matt Damon know I know who he wants. He's never wanted acting Oscar one for hunting screenwriter juicy Merson the Martian yet no. I got a nominated. The native for the thinking was jokes. Like yeah so that movie seems to me that they they were. They were hurting for escort and they were like. Hey let's make a film with everybody in it. I Live for who the director was. But let's also make this an American car you know whatever. Yeah so I totally think there's some premeditation with the projects that people take on for Oscars AH acting and producers directing. I think all of that is a deliberate thing. Not always but but rap. There's definitely some people have some premeditation about it. I think one hundred percent but I think that they go for convention. It's like conventional movies because there's an aspect of like prom king to the authors it's votes. It's it's people it's its members the academy and so there's definitely of we. I should get this person in Oscar or we should you know. Make sure that this movie wins. Yeah you know it's popularity you know it's like we're saying earlier the heisman where it's like it's not in theory is supposed to be for the best player in college football a lot of times. It goes to the most famous player on the number one team. Yeah rather than the guy over here this setting records. It goes to the guy in Alabama because albums number one. You know exactly movies. They tend to give it to the movie or the actor that they think needs to win rather than the best actor now. Yep So. That's a big flaw in the Oscars and that that said there are some good good Nominees yes how. Many times is the Irishman nominated. Wanted quite a few. I mean because it's like you got best. Supporting actor and the best. Supporting actor is one of the toughest categories. Because it's like I think everybody in that category could win. Because you have Tom Hanks beautiful neighborhood. I haven't seen that which is great but I know Tom. Hanks is always going to be good but he does you just watching that you know. He's going to get nominated and he may very well win. Anthony Hopkins in two popes. That's another that's a phenomenal movie. And I'm not shocked at all that he that he won both he and Jonathan Pryce as pope. Pope Francis are amazing. Both of them th those are phenomenal and most of their performance is not in the English. They're both Jonathan prices. Mainly Spanish and a lot of Anthony Hopkins is isn't German or Italian or Spanish. They hardly act in English at all interesting. So it's phenomenal spamming. I hate to throw age and there. But it's like any hopkins is in mid eighties and it's amazing phenomenal. Yeah so that. That's the most difficult category. I think Brad Pitt's GonNa win it for once upon time in Hollywood is because Aziz Brad Pitt yeah I mean. Don't get me wrong. I saw this list earlier talked about it and like I agreed this you know. I don't follow the offers. There's a lot but I know what's been out there like you know nine times out of ten. I would say you could probably pick. WHO's GonNa win pretty easily? Maybe you'd you'd have an inkling like when I mean when I was looking at this list I was like Shit and I've seen some of these films and I was like man. I don't know Brad Pitt. Like I'm he was good and don't get me wrong. I have seen the Irishman so I don't know who else would out the Chino's strong candidate in that so I guess Irishman Irishman got like ten nominee. Yeah joke eleven. Oh more than my God comic books hold hold on hold on it. Shut your fucking face point. No no see comics but the point just before you know this is once again where marvel has been called a snub but it was like one nomination. Yeah it was like you look at all these great films that have been like of all the marvel and again like not getting the love I mean has any marvel film in the recent years. Black Panther really was nominated for best picture. Really know that okay. I think it was the first convict movie to Be Nominated really editor. Yeah I mean that was probably hey we should probably nominate this film. It was culturally sadly. Yeah and yeah I mean salad like regardless of how well was like they probably the academy had to do that but yeah it's kind of crazy to be like don't get me wrong. Joker was a great movie. But if you're GONNA ask me what I would watch again what I watched joker or endgame I probably watch endgame again. You know it's crazy to be like look I know that a lot of that. CGI and a lot of it's on a green screen. uh-huh oh but that's still takes work. It's been yeah Lord of the Rings. I mean granted every that that that was kind of revolutionary INARI. Yeah but comic film but it was still damn good and they they did wait until the third one came out and everything. Yes the retrospect of it really. I don't know I don't know if it warranted if that single film because that single film like the return of the was not was not the best I in my eyes it was still two towers. Yeah but they just had to be like well shit you guys did spend three fucking years or more and it was actually actually. It was almost a decade taking together. There it was almost a decade to get all three out but they were there filming for three years. Yeah Yeah Yeah. So that was that was it was a victory lap. Basically crazy to think that like of all these these films that have been coming out. That immoral movie wouldn't be adopted. Unknown there especially going back to what you just said in game being the you know the the final chapter of that phase. So you wouldn't give in game any love. Yeah it was like anyway. So they don't Oscars really they don't like sci fi fantasy or or or movies primarily they've they've opened printed up more in recent years like the shape of water which I still haven't seen I've heard good ratings came out what actually that one last year. I think two years ago two years ago before that no last year I'm I'm blank. Romo won best foreign film Green Book. One Oh yeah with Romo is your favorite though yes okay yes That's what I thought I thought should win and once at won best foreign film. I knew it wouldn't win. Yeah Best Picture under. They're going to give it again. Green Book was more culturally significant. I didn't think it was the best film. Last year primarily Oscar films to me are like back from one person's point of view or or I don't know like the Jennifer Lawrence joy movie which I saw and I was like. This isn't bizarre super great. Great Yeah it's just I. It's either a whole bunch of shitty stuff happening to somebody and then persevering or it's a weird kind of gangster or like takes a slice out of of like history and you know pulls in real close and shows you just a slice of that time or or whatever it's interesting joker does the same thing just chatty avenue stuff happening to one guy only. He's a you know a comic book character. He doesn't have anything super about him. But yeah I mean it takes it takes an Oscar formula and puts clown makeup on it basically and I might be this might be a controversial thing to say but I think joker is horrendously overrated. I I would agree. I honestly that's like put it okay. For example it's like nineteen seventeen..

"I was a little upset that they even truncated they Gaga performance. I personally, you know, I get it. It's not my night. But I would not have been mad of a few of the awards were presented during the commercials. And then re aired during the show just cutting out the walking up bits. Who cares? You know? You know, what I was maybe next year? I think it would have helped the show to have that popular film Oscar category, which they were gonna do. But then there was some backlash from academy members. And they ended up not doing it. I also still think that eight nominees for best. Picture is too many. I think it should be five. And no last no more. I agree with that. I think eight is way too many way too. I also noticed an I appreciate it that there was less politics at this year's Oscars. I mean, there is no some moments of it. But I think a lot of that just has to do with us accepting, and settling into the fact that that idiot in the White House is the idiot in the White House. You know, I think people are just tired of talking about politics there finally bored with it he settled in the rhetoric has settled in a four we get to memorable moments in the performances, and all that do you have any just overall notes thoughts on the Oscars? I liked it. I my overall note is I like the way that it moved I appreciated the shorter performances. I liked it without a host. I didn't feel like it was such a long show. I didn't feel be labored because of the speeches in everything felt okay? Of course, they're still the makeup people. The sound people that I don't give a rat's ass about that. Nobody else does either they go on and on and they gotta be played off. But outside of that, you know, it felt like a pretty quick watch last night, but I was six Margaritas in. So who knows? Yeah. Well, let's talk about the memorable moments, and that will get to the performances, I think by far for me, the most memorable speech or moment outside of the performances was a Livia Coleman winning for best. Actress for many reasons, I think that was by a lot of accounts. Unexpected everybody had been predicting Glenn Close to win and Glenn Close. Did the whole campaigning thing which is a big part of winning an Oscar and Olivia Colman didn't because she's been busy working hashtag, filming one of your favorite shows. The crown she's going to be playing Queen Elizabeth coming up in the next season of the Netflix show. And I thought also. Gun close with a win because she's been nominated so many times and she hasn't won. And oftentimes people give folks sympathy VO or win. Even if it's not the best work they've ever done. And then she got up on stage and gave the best speech of the night. What I loved about. It was I don't think she rehearsed it too much. I mean, it's one of those things where if you're nominee evil if you're an actor. You always dream of what you're going to say, and you're in the category, you need to be somewhat prepared. Just in case it happened. Exactly. But I don't think she was really prepared to. But it was better that way everything she said was sought benthic and the lady Gaga at the end. She was a cute what I loved was that it was so filled with emotion, but she was also a professional and wasn't overcome with emotion. She let the emotion wash over her. And we could see all of the different ones happening at the same time. But it didn't stop her from still delivering a nail. Pulling a great speech, and it was funny. It was emotional. You know, talking about I'm getting emotional just thinking about it. By the way, she's on a Netflix show that I've been watching. I wish I could remember the damn name of it. But it's like two words. It's a typical British murders of martyr happens at a small town. She plays a cop and she's just phenomenal. It's a great show. I wish I could come up with the name of it right now. But it gives me I can't remember what it is. But it's pretty good one of the Brits that I was with last night told me that that was a big show the UK. It's a straight, right. Yeah. It's very good..

"It didn't add anything to the saga words for me. And so I'm wondering, you know, in in the countries with conversations we've been having about a host, Louis Oscars. What the construction of that? Like how that read to you guys did you? Yeah, it's interesting because you know, a show does have to have some kind of crowd control. You know, it has to flow in there has to be someone directing the transitions, right? And I didn't really watch the whole show. I kind of just watched like clips of Megamall alleys kind of jokes, which were not great. But it did make me wonder like, okay. So the Oscar No-ho said he has interesting because Mike you've been saying you open with a big song. Great that. That's that's your opening. I agree agree that that would be the strong way to do it. But, but then what how do we get from that point to the first award is there is like member of the years ago when Peter Coyote was like at this round desk backstage all the announcements that was so weird. Is it like one of those things where we just have someone some like voice of God being like a now, you know, maybe that works, but I do also worried that like the no host thing from the Oscars was not like a long standing plan that they really like honed and sort of worked with it was kind of. A last minute thing. So I think there's potential Oscars. Are this is what I'm saying? Well, I mean, everything has been a mess so far. Now, there's all this like anger and debate and arguing over the decisions to give below the line stuff during the commercials and Cinematograph pants now below the line, and you just think what is going to be in this show, if there's no host if you won't let three of the five song nominees actually perform if you're having all the below the line things not happen on screen like you're really setting the bar, so high that everything that happens on screen has to be absolutely fascinating. And amazing, and it won't it's going to be bunch of mostly boring speeches there. I just feel like this thing. It's shaping up. Really horribly. I will say one thing that I want to predict possibly possible prediction is that there's going to be some kind of surprise host or group hosting thing. At the beginning. I'm starting to think they're gonna bus. Something out and have maybe they'll bring back some pass hosts or something I think they're going to probably engineer some kind of opening number. I don't know if you can pull that off. But in the world of surprise, marriages and surprise babies and stuff I feel like a surprise opener is not unthinkable. Excellent. All right. So do you have any predictions about who you think would be in the surprise group? I feel like God. I don't know next week. We'll we'll come back to that. Okay. We should mention that we talked last week or so we can four about a potential campaign saves for for Bradley Cooper, performing places. And hey, what does he been doing lately guys? Now, I'm getting hubristic. I feel like I don't think Bradley or any of the senior people involved stars for listening. But I have a feeling some of the some of the people who actually make it all happen are listening and my fantasy is that they're going to their bosses telling them what to do, and they're and they're listening and they're getting huge raise. This is my this is my goal for all of you guys. I really like how many I got notes both on Twitter and other places of people being like, oh my God. Do you think Bradley Cooper steam listens to little gold, man? So let's all right. Let's see what what happened. Exactly. So Gaga was performing at at the garden. Was it? I don't know the venue, and then Bradley came out and did a Jackson main thing, basically and saying shallow with it. Right. And one point apparently air guitars and somebody said, you can really tell the difference. Clean jackson. Maine and Bradley Cooper because the air guitar would have been cool. If Jackson main had done it, but it was kind of dorky. I just think that like, you know, and Gaga was giving him this like, I don't know a God has decided to join us sort of treatment..
