Also, the B one on seven seems to spread more rapidly among unvaccinated people. It's believed to be more transmissible. Dr Ken Steadman says there's more of a reason for optimism because in Oregon variant is encountering many more vaccinated people than in India. I'm not terribly concerned about any of these, mostly because the vaccines seem to be working really, quite well. State health officials agree. "You today. We appreciate it. Thank you for having me here again. School, like Tiffany's Association has adjusted high school sports schedules again because of covert 19 0 as they executive director Peter Webber, Dr Diehard radios Chad doing and Travis two birds from Rip City radio. What's the new news? The latest news from you guys in terms of what you're gonna do? With high school sports is to move into the future. Yeah, so you know, we were scheduled to start our what we're calling season to basically our winter sports on December 28. That was the plan that we came out with earlier in August and We're hoping we could do that. I think one of the things that we're finding out like everybody else's. When you have plans during the pandemic, you better have some backup plans to and so you know, we met with our board. Um, it just didn't look like that was going to be able to happen. The rising case counts. County risk level metrics that recently came out and the fact that for the Oregon Health Authority and the governor's office, you know, basketball wrestling two of those three sports along the swimming Basketball resting or prohibited by the state in terms of a competition. So, um, those are those are things that we had to adjust with and to deal with, and So our board on Monday made some decisions. Tioga basically shift our calendar again. We're going to push things back A little bit. T February provide some more time for Hopefully, some of the case counts to come down and some counties to get out of that extreme risk level also allows some time you know, hopefully to get kids back into schools in that in person learning and kind of at that semester type. Break there in early February, and then and then we're going to start with our fall sports. We switched the seasons back around, Go fall, and then the spring on, then finish up with the winter. So those are decisions made by our board on Monday, and we're excited about those changes. Appear there. There are a lot of questions with the fallout of this and what this means. You just answered one of them with the order of when the sports are gonna be played. But in terms of having this backup plan is this something that you anticipated or with? Really was kind of early mid November when the case is really started to rise again. Is that when things got serious that, okay, we really need to rethink what our plans were. Well, we knew when we put the plan together and August that you know, at that time, the wrestling and the basketball prohibited now, of course, that was four months ago. And, you know, we thought, I think like a lot of people that things hopefully would get better by it by now. In terms of that, and maybe some changes would come in the guidance. So to your point, Yeah, you know, earlier in the fall as things appear, t maybe not be going our way. You know, we've been working with some contingency groups, groups of coaches and eighties. Talking about different options. As I said, we met with our board a few times and then ultimately decided on this approach. We looked at it, You know, another approach that would have stacks, Um, sports on top of one another in Morva to season rather than a three season approach. But ultimately our board, you know, didn't want to have to put kids in schools in that situation of making choices. They wanted to try and stay with the three seasons. Obviously, it's shorter. You know the shorter seasons. That's not ideal, but We're just anxious T get out there and hopefully get playing a soon as we can. There in February. A Peter how many counties here in the extreme risk category right now. By my last count. It was 25 out of 36 or in the extreme risk. Yeah. Wow. Wow. Yeah. You know, in in terms of the other piece that changed a little bit, too, is again that guidance from the Oregon Health Authority and governor's office. You know, right around Thanksgiving, you know they came out with the county risk levels, and at that time they changed. K 12 school sports that kind of been on its own guidance. Recreational sports had its separate guidance. And when they came out with the new county risk levels, they brought it all under indoor recreation guidance. And then there's outdoor recreation guidance and everything's tied. Your county risk level. So that again, That was a little bit of a change as well for school. Certainly the focus and that in that guidance is on outdoor activities, not not the indoor activities, certainly for those extreme risk counties On so working through that I think one of the things that we continue to remind people is that that sports guy and sitting in the governor's office and only chair the ones that provide that those air, not suggestions those air requirements from the state and just like businesses. Are bound to follow. Those were bound to follow those as an association or schools are bound to follow those and really what we're trying to do, and I think what the board did on Monday is trying to preserve those opportunities for kids to play. While working within those parameters. Obviously, we'd love for the parameters to change, but we need to work within them until they do change. So that's where we're at at this point. How much were you guys seeing what other states are doing and how things are working in other places, because there are some places that have been playing the whole time..

"Mrs. Tio, Help you get back on your feet. Andi. All of it is funded through marijuana tax revenue and the saving from the criminal legal with them because you're no longer spending that money, arresting and prosecuting and incarcerating people and all of that, just the shift from criminalization to a healthy approach. You've heard from the attorneys general who have waited on this, the prosecutors and types and they and they all said that you know, they don't like this. They feel that it's going to get rid of the stigma and that it's going to make it more, I guess acceptable and that more people, maybe even young people might try it because it's not. It's not illegal. It's OK, Do you? How do you? How do you respond when you when you hear That that their viewpoint Sure. So, you know, we actually have a broad support for that approach, including from choke in mind Force mint and, uh, district attorney in the state of Oregon and across the country in all filling, the fact is that approached Has worked and been tried elsewhere. We actually see in Portugal 20 years ago, they were dealing with a health crisis where At the rate of HIV and anything that country were increasing at such a rapid paints that they decided what do we do? We need to have a pollution. They got doctor and and folks judges and took them on, forfeit together to come up with a solution and what they did, but they be criminal like all drug and the country of Portugal, and the past two decades, experience has shown that it Burke in Portugal, You haven't seen any increase in Drug you but what you have been if that arrest incarceration, drug related disease, an overdose have all decreased. And so I mean, the critiques just aren't based in fact. One of things that I do like about this program is you figure out a way to fund the drug addiction programs. I mean that that that's ultimately you're using the marijuana money to say, OK, the marijuana tax money. To say, Okay, These people who generally need help want help, and we can offer that for them to people. Otherwise you might not be able to afford. It might not be able to find the right program, and it'll be interesting to see how it works. Is this so this ballot initiative does that Just make it immediately start in Oregon, Or is it going to now Goto Legislature and there's still another step. Hey. So, um, mythic Now, the belonging or again, I mean, that is the will of voter And this was a very well thought out Initiative and will Intuit where specific dates and dead bind by which, on each of the new rules had to be put in place, And so That's all prescribed in the initiative, for example, you know when, but Grant funding from the marijuana tax revenue needs to be granted out to the addiction recovery centers across the state. And so you know, I mean, it's three exciting on DH. But of course, you know with anything a big ship like this in a wa. There are lots of specifics to work out with the Legislature. And so we will be working with them with Oregon Health Authority, Tio ensure that this has implemented in a way that Not respect the will of the voters in Oregon and brings the greatest possible benefit. "Walked through this area without being stopped by police. Up Until this point. Officers were only allowing people to pass thru if they lived here, or we're headed to area businesses. As for the protesters, we saw a handful peacefully chanting at the corner of Pine Street and Broadway. However, the past couple nights in the same area demonstrators clashed with police. Several people were arrested. A couple protesters told me they would be back in larger numbers that are trying to keep things peaceful. If we won't respect from them to change way need to give back. We need to show respect on and if they don't want you crossing that line going across that line. I'm going to protest. I'm going to stand here. I would say the end game strategy for a long game is to keep the peace. Authorities say they have every right to demonstrate. But if it gets violent or out of hand, officers will move in and make more arrests. But I'm being told by police, it's unlikely Pine Street will be closed again. There's still a visible police presence in the area, and the East Precinct is right up the street with even more officers in case there are problems. That is Cuomo's Jonathan Show reporting, the State Department of Health reports. A total of 1352 people in our state have now died from Cove in 19 up 10 from yesterday.
