"And this one smart aleck kid, Alex, says, well, will it be a game? Because he knows with me it's always a game. And I said, yeah, but it's going to be a dangerous game. So what I wanted to do with them is I wanted to have us do a simulation where we all pretended to be on a wagon train together, traveling together on the Oregon Trail, right? So the first thing we have to do is we have to think of Oregon Trail names. And I want to be very authentic. So I have them keep their first names, but they have to choose their last names from a list that I found online of people who really died on the Oregon Trail. So, you know, they have their first names like Katie and Caleb and whatever, but now they're Chapman and Chubbock and Blunderfield are their last names. Great. And then they have to choose occupations. And all the girls want to be pop stars. And I say, there were no pop stars on the Oregon Trail. And so you have to choose authentic occupations. So fine. So they're farmers and doctors and gold miners and whatnot. So great. But before we get started, I want them to really feel it, what it was like to walk that long. So I take them on a 40 block walk. This is New York City. 40 blocks is about two miles. I don't think it's that long. But I guess if you're a nine year old, it's pretty long. And it's a beautiful day. We're walking up the Hudson. It's totally gorgeous. And I'm like getting really dramatic into it. You know, oh, I wonder if you will make it to Fort Kearney. Like I'm trying to get them into the whole thing. Where all they're doing is complaining. And finally, Alex, who's now Alex Bacon, because that's the name he chose. Alex Bacon says, well, I'm thirsty. And I say, well, there were no water fountains on the Oregon Trail. And he's like, well, there's a water fountain right there. And I think about the parent phone call that I don't want to get about withholding water from a child. That's a reasonable concern. So I sort of think fast. I say, oh, a stream. How fortunate. Let us partake. So it's great. We get back. We're tired and exhausted. They're complaining. And I'm like, just wait. There's 2,000 miles to go. And so the way I've decided to do this is previous to this, I always wrote out everything. It was like a letter to them and then they wrote a letter back. I always had total control. But now I've decided the Oregon Trail, it was really luck if you were going to, you know, make it. And so I want it to be a game of chance. And so what I've done is I've combined, do you guys know the Oregon Trail video game? Some fans. I've combined the Oregon Trail video game with the role-playing game Dungeons and Dragons. So what I've, some other fans. Maybe they're the same fans. I'm not sure. So what I've done is I'll tell them every day what's going to happen and they'll make some decisions about what they want to do on the trail. And then we'll roll dice to see if they succeeded or failed. Like, we had to cross a river. They decided to for their wagons. We rolled dice. Did their wagons sink or float? That kind of thing. So this is, and I've made myself a character. So I've made myself a bonnet out of upholstery material. And I put on the bonnet my first day. And I introduce myself as Mary, the wagon train captain. And I say, we have all come here for different reasons, but we will have to work together to fight the hunger and bad weather that await us. And Alex Bacon says, excuse me, Mary. Yes? This is a dangerous game. Could we die? And I will admit I was in character. And I also will admit I wanted to take Alex Bacon down a peg. So I found myself saying, sure. People died on the Oregon Trail all the time. Someone might die. And this, I know, but this shiver of excitement goes across my class. Like, they liked my stuffed animal rock band, but danger. This is good, right? And I know I'm not going to get there. We're not going to kill anyone on the Oregon Trail. But the idea that someone might die gets them wanting to come to social studies. So this is okay. So we're off. We're rolling our dice. We're shooting buffalo. We like stop at a fort and drink snake oil and throw up for a whole day. It's amazing, right? And everything's going so well. My game is a total hit. The problem is, every day before I put on this bonnet, some kid says to me, is someone going to die today? Is this the day someone dies? And I keep putting them off and putting them off. And finally, I'm like, you know what? We're two weeks in to my project. We're getting close to the Rockies. And everything's going so well. I'm like, you know what? I'll give them their brush with death, right? So I write out a bunch of possibilities of what could happen that day, depending on what we do. And the next time someone asks me, is someone going to die today? I say, we have been lucky thus far. But the Rockies lie ahead. The most treacherous part of our journey. Who knows what might happen? So I put on the bonnet, I tell them, and I set the stage for the day. In the early morning light, on a rocky mountain pass, a wagon hits a rock and is overturned. Someone is trapped beneath the wagon. Let us roll to find out who it is. I'm not proud of this. I won't be. I take off my bonnet. I have this whole system of rolls to assign to each kid. And I roll, and I find out it's a farmer, Catherine Chubbuck. Her real name is just Katie. She's a little girl. And she's one of these kids who always has really messy hair, and it sounds like she's been smoking since she was three. And I say, Catherine Chubbuck, you've been trapped beneath the wagon. Your legs have been trapped. Come to the front of the room and roll to find out if you get freed and what happens. And she rolls. And she is freed, but her legs have become infected. I want to remind you, I wrote all of these possibilities. If you want to blame anyone, you blame me for what's... And I say, Catherine Chubbuck, roll to find out if your infection gets better or worse. Well, I'm thinking, these are very dark possibilities. And she rolls, and her infection gets worse. And she just looks at me and goes, did I die? And as soon as she says it, I realize how badly I have messed up. We've reached the end of my possibilities that I wrote. I do not know what happens next. Do we have a funeral on the side of the Oregon Trail? Is this the parent phone call I get about having killed a child on the Oregon Trail? And I'm racking my brain. I don't know what to do. And just then, from the back of the classroom, this little girl, Ellis, whose Oregon Trail was Dr. Ellis Chapman, just goes, wait! I'm a doctor! And I'm like, thank the Lord. And I say, Dr. Ellis Chapman brings her doctor back. She knows how to feel of the infection. Roll to find out what happens. The only way you die is if you roll a six. The class is not breathing. And Katie does the thing that third graders do when it's a very important roll, which is blow on the dice. I don't know what movie they saw that in, but... You know? And it's a three. And she survives. It's mayhem in my classroom. It's like the end of Apollo 13. Kids are like throwing papers in the air and hugging each other. Ellis is hugging Katie, and Katie's just going, I almost died. I almost died. And I'm just like, thank God I brought a doctor on the wagon train. We didn't want to bring her, right? Because she can't hunt. The problem is we're still at the Rockies. We still have another about 700 miles to go. And I will tell you, nothing bad happened on the rest of the trip. Forget pioneers walking. This was Amazon Prime shipping to Oregon City. We just got there. And I'm so done with it. And when we got there, we did our mileage, we did our budgets for our farms, and I also baked them authentic cornbread from an authentic recipe I had found. Also online. But we also had a dance party to September by Earth, Wind & Fire. Which is not authentic. Thank you. Which is not authentic, but that was sort of the mood I was in that we finally got there. And I have to tell you, I always felt like this was my failure of a unit. This was the unit that I just couldn't really hack it. But a couple of years ago, I ran into Katie. And she's in eighth grade. She was in eighth grade at the time. And she looked exactly the same except she'd been like stretched, you know, a little taller. And I hugged her. We recognized each other. I hugged her. I asked her where she was. And the first thing she said to me was, do you remember when I almost died on the Oregon trip? So I was like, I really do. "And now it's time for In the Trenches, where we hear from teachers and students telling their truths. Today on In the Trenches, we have such a special guest. It's Michaela Bly. She is a professional educator and storyteller and here she is in front of a live audience telling one of my favorite stories. So, here's Michaela's story. So, it's the last unit of the year. I'm teaching third grade. It's the last unit of the year and it's the Oregon Trail. And I'm prepared to have my students really live the Oregon Trail. This is how I taught. I was someone who was a really big fan of... I'm going to wait until the emergency goes by. And we should all hope that everyone's okay. Hope it's okay. It's probably not an emergency. It's probably someone who's like, I think I smell gas. I'm not sure. Okay. I'm going to start again. It's the last unit of the year, as I told you. I'm teaching third grade. I'm teaching the Oregon Trail and I want to have my students really live the Oregon Trail. This is what I did whenever I taught. I would create these worlds and then sort of run them like a puppet master. I really liked to be in charge of the worlds that we created and they were always pretty silly. So, for example, when my students needed to learn about the states, I would have this stuffed animal rock band named Anticlea and the Howlers who would get lost across the United States. They would write us letters and we would have to write them back to help them figure out if they were in Pennsylvania or Kentucky or whatever. And I had all these characters who would write us these letters. People like Caesar Von Salad, Cheesy to Pizza. This is where my brain was, right? But now it's the Oregon Trail. This is not geography. This is history. And Oregon Trail, this is a really complicated time in American history. And I have to admit, I was a new teacher. I was not sure I could get at the moral complicated issues of westward expansion with nine-year-olds, right? Like they sometimes don't even take the perspective of their little sister, much less like getting at these multiple perspectives. But I could get at how serious it was that this was a really big deal for people who were going to be traveling on the Oregon Trail. They're going from Independence, Missouri to Oregon City, 2,000 miles. They're leaving everything they know. They're risking everything they have. They're bringing their families. And I really wanted them to get that and I wanted it to be an authentic experience. So I came to my students and I said, so we're going to be studying the Oregon Trail.

The Justice Department is weighing in against a controversial new abortion law. In Texas Attorney General Merrick Garland says the department will not tolerate violence against anyone who is trying to get an abortion in Texas or damage to providers property. He says the DOJ would protect those seeking to obtain and provide reproductive health services under federal law, known as the Freedom of Access to Clinic Entrances Act. Former President Bill Clinton back the legislation in response to violence by anti abortion activists in the 19 eighties and nineties taxes. New law bans the procedure at around six weeks when doctors can detect a fetal heartbeat and at a time when many women don't know they're pregnant. Meanwhile, an online news site called The 19th reported last week that whole women's Health and Fort Worth performed 67 abortions in 17 hours before the law took effect. Meanwhile, the Portland Oregon City Council will vote this on this tomorrow on an emergency resolution banning the purchase of goods and services from tax proposals in response to the new law in Texas prohibiting most abortions, the resolution of past would be in effect until Texas either withdraws the law or get it overturned in court. In a state with the Portland City Council, said quote. It stands unified in its belief that all people should have the right to choose if and when they carry a pregnancy and that the decisions they make are complex, difficult and unique to their circumstances.
