Bills hang on for 34-31 wild-card win over Dolphins
"The Buffalo Bills get by the Miami Dolphins in the wild card round by a score of 34 31. They've all grown together. So we're ready for what's ahead. Christian McCaffrey had a 119 yards rushing, and deebo Samuel had 6 catches for a 133 yards. You know Smith was 25 of 35 for 253 yards, two touchdowns and an interception. McCaffrey says pretty showed a lot of poise for a guy who was taken last overall in the 2022 draft. He's extremely confident and he's exactly what you would want in a quarterback. No moment is too big for him and he makes corrections quickly and we saw that today and he's able to go out there and play with some juice and hit the right guys and let everybody else do their jobs. Sunday's games have the bills hosting the dolphins. The Vikings entertaining the Giants and the ravens visiting the Bengals. The dolphins with the last team to grab an AFC playoff birth. And buffalo finished with the second best winning percentage in the conference, but bill's coach Sean McDermott says his team better be ready. That's a good football team. That we've split with this year and we have a lot of respect for them in terms of what they've done and what they've accomplished this season. So we've got to get ourselves ready to go. The dolphins handed the bills their first loss of the season during week three. Buffalo was a 32 29 winner over Miami at Orchard park on December 17th. The Vikings of the number three seed in the NFC, three spots ahead of the Giants, but New York is one of the sexy pics to pull off an upset. Minnesota head coach Kevin O'Connell says he has respect for giants coach Brian dabel and defensive coordinator wink martingale. Joe burrow hopes their AFC title run last season will benefit them this month. I think it's natural to call back on experiences that you've had in similar situations. So I think I'd be lying if I said I wasn't, but like I said, it's a new year new team, new opponents, and so we know what it takes. That's all last year did for us. Correspondent Tom mccabe reports the Vikings looked out of it at halftime, then made some NFL history with a victory over the colts. It's the biggest comeback in NFL history and it clinches the NFC north for the Vikings. Down 33 to nothing at halftime, Minnesota rally to beat the colts and overtime 39 to 36. Quarterback Kirk Cousins passed for 460 yards. Great to win, great to come back. I had no idea it was the largest NFL history. Something like that doesn't happen to average people. So I'm proud of the way the group did that. Receivers, KJ Osborne, and Justin Jefferson combined for 280 yards. Minnesota now 11 and three, the colts four 9 and one. I'm Tom mccabe. Next up, an AFC north battle where the ravens push for the division title suffered a setback in Cleveland. Craig heist is this one. Deshaun Watson threw for 161 yards and a touchdown winning his home debut as the browns upset the ravens 13 to three. Watson hit Donovan people's Jones with a three yard scoring pass in the third quarter capping off a 91 yard drive. He says the browns played well in all three phases, special teams, defense offense, played complimentary football as defensive way. We went against a great defense. You got to give them credit. But it was special to be able to get this video in front of the fans. The ravens rushed for 198 yards with JK dobbins, rushing for a 125. I'm Craig heist. "Are you going to get the Patriots team from the 7 game winning streak? Are we going to get to the Patriots team that we've seen over the last month? And we said then and there that it could get ugly if the Patriots team that played in Miami in the Patriots team that played in week 16 against the bills and week 15 against Indianapolis. If that was the team that came to Orchard park on Saturday night, we were expecting them to lose maybe not by 30 points, but to have it look at these 50% though the way that it did, right? Maybe I thought they were going to lose by a couple of touchdowns. That's the thing. I don't even think it was those teams because the first game against buffalo are the same game against buffalo. The colts game, Miami, they started coming back. Yeah. This was something. It's not the two different versions of 2021 pages. That was the 2020 patriots. That was a team that was just totally helpless turtle on their back in the sun. Yeah, yeah. And I think that that's something that's a little bit alarming, certainly, because you have to think about the inner workings and the leadership and I'm not talking about Bill Belichick necessarily, but I am talking about the coordinator level, certainly, right? And you look at the offensive defensive and special teams coordinators and I put coordinators in air quotes for the defense because you're the heck knows who is actually running the ship there. It's kind of a combination of Mayo Steve and obviously Matt Patricia with Bill Belichick as the overseer. And you look at all these types of things and I do think that you have to point to talent and you have to point to the fact that they were completely ran off the field and couldn't keep up with buffalo. As a big reason why more so than maybe the schematic X's and O's of the game plan and what exactly they went out there and did on the tape. They played a lot more zone coverage than they did again in week 16. It wasn't as much man, but it really didn't matter. It really didn't matter what the game plan was. They were just completely overmatched in this game by buffalo. And I thought the interesting thing that Jacoby Myers said that he said a couple of interesting things and this is where I want to go with it next. The first thing that I thought was really interesting that he said was everybody else that we're in the playoff hot that we're contending in the AFC started to elevate their game as the season progressed. And Myers said that he didn't feel like the compete level or the buy in, diminished, but it never increased. It never got to that playoff level. It was always sort of the same baseline compete level, which was a solid buy in, but not good enough to elevate their game to that next sort of tier of teams. The other thing that I think is sort of what you said about the foundational year is when they lose like that, it's really easy to lose sight of the fact that this was year one of Mac Jones's NFL career. "Important games so to speak might come later. The division games. No, no, no, no. That's not how this team thinks anymore. The A F C games five of the 63 are against what I guess people would consider contenders in the F C. I don't know, however, People view Pittsburgh but think about the non division games. You got Miami obviously critical in week two, right? But So you're talking In those first five first six games. Pittsburgh Steelers. Kansas City Chiefs Tennessee Titans. You want home field advantage. You got to take care of business, man. You've got to take care of business in those games. The difference between The A F C championship game at Arrowhead versus the championship game in Orchard Park. Is the bills having to beat out the Chiefs by record X, actually beating them by record versus maybe tying and still being okay if they win that game. Whoever wins that game can afford to Have the same record as the other team. Whoever loses that game has to literally beat out the team due to head to head. That's how critical this is. We're not trying to get ahead of ourselves. You have to make sure you're looking at the big picture. There was something that came out today. Britain had emailed us, he said. Hey, the The Odyssey team wants season predictions. Basically, there's some questions. We have to answer. One of the questions was The bills will miss the playoffs. If and I'm like, Oh, my God, right, But my answer was, if they try to treat every game like it's the Super Bowl, they have to keep the big picture in mind and understand that it's a It's a week to week every day consistency type of situation, and I think they will under Sean McDermott. But those first six games are critical. If you want that number one seed, I think for sure, especially the Kansas City game as you as you headlined, Um But, yeah, like the Pittsburgh game to me, like right off the bat is the perfect game for this because they matter they're good. It's not like a walkover. It's not like you're starting with Houston. Like I think you can still get a sense in a grasp on is this team as good as they were last season, do have early signs of that because I'm not expecting any type of regression. From the team overall. In fact, I think there really could be an assumption that they have on defense with their pass rush that could cause them to be a better overall unit than they even were last season. I just don't think the way the passing game evolved last season that they can come back down to earth enough to wear the expectations of what we're talking about about playing Kansas City in the F C championship me about winning the Super Bowl. I don't think enough regression is possible to wear not having those discussions is even warranted. So I love that they're starting with Pittsburgh. It's the perfect game for this. They are not to me this juggernaut that they've been at times over the past 15 years, But to me, they still rate enough to where if the bills go into that game, and you mentioned this morning, I'm with Howard and Jeremy. Like what could that game look like? Maybe what did Jeremy call an arm's length game? Or like Like last year's Jets game, you're ahead by maybe two touchdowns. The whole game scoreboard doesn't look like a blowout. Feel like you're in control. Yeah, you never feel like the the results in danger. But at the end of the day that Jets game opening week, right, they won by 10 when it felt like they should have won by 30, right. And what if what if that happens on Sunday, which is completely realistic. That just confirms that you're one step above those like a F C playoff contenders like that. I would put Pittsburgh in that category. The Chargers. I think New England Miami rightfully can be put in that, like, how about the real A. F C contenders for the conference, not just to make the playoffs.
