"Formula One has descended on the orange army's home turf this weekend for the Dutch Grand Prix at zandvoort and Max Verstappen was not going to disappoint them. Bouncing back from an issue on Friday in a couple of areas in final practice that left him trailing Charles Leclerc, Verstappen snatched pole position in a dramatic Q three on Saturday afternoon. At that time of one minute, 10.342 gave Verstappen pole by just two hundredths of a second from the clerk who is left to rue his own error at the end of Q three. Elsewhere there was a response from Mercedes after its sparse slump, joy for Mick Schumacher and Lance stroll after making it through Q three and questions of a fan actions after a flare was thrown onto the track at the start of Q two, bringing out a red flag. Joining me to debrief today's qualifying session is auto sport Grand Prix editor Alex Cullen or Alex, let's start with the main man this weekend, max stapp and we've all seen how crazy the fans are for him here. I've got the supermax song stuck in my head. It's charged to pole position. I mean, it was kind of maybe inevitable in terms of the whole event, but it was a close run thing. What did you make of his performance to get poll in Q three? Do you know what I often have that supermax? Oh really? That's so damn catchy. It really is. It really is. No, but the first time hearing it sung by thousands and thousands of people, which are pretty cool and they're all dancing, dancing around. We will get to the idiots that are frankly I guess what I would say ruining it for the rest of them. We'll come on to that later. But yeah, if you're actually stopping the sporting action with your own stupidity, you are ruining it for other people and they should be widely condemning it as very good to hear Max Verstappen and other drivers doing that. But yeah, talking about max Verstappen today. Yeah, it was interesting. I was very fortunate enough thanks to you, volunteering to do the FB three report, allowed to go outside and watch final practice from the turn three and the incredible banked corners, I think very much leaky. You're welcome. It's one of those places and there are fair few on the F one calendar, but genuinely like. It's one of those places where you're like, I'm so lucky to be here. Because obviously it sort of raised up sort of above the paddock overlooking if you look behind you, and you can obviously see the pit lane entrance and then the grand sans are behind you, but it's relatively few people who can go and stand around though, so you've got the marshal as the photographers. And they are bringing some paddock club guests up there as well as with that various points, but just yet now to look down at it, you're like, wow, hardly anybody seeing this at the time and it's just a tremendous way to experience Formula One cars because of that banking is so steep, it's such a narrow, just of area of the track. But yeah, they're turning in so late. It almost just wait for their front wheels to hit that branding at the edge of the track and then turn. There were a couple of areas from max late in Q three, particularly on the exit he was looked like he was really really struggling. And it's interesting in qualifying as well in the head of the final ones. That's where it looked like it was going ever so slightly wrong because the car looked quite loose. It looked like he was struggling. That was on the first runs, but also on the second runs, he said that rebels didn't quite get it set out lap optimal. He was in traffic a little bit of traffic just about the tyres weren't quite ready. That's I think that probably paid him back come the middle sector will come and talk about Charles Leclerc in a moment because speaking to some of the sort of engineers at the moment with the tyres at this track as ever tyres which will be delicate. But what happens here is that if you push them too hard as this case other tracks, you will lose the lab go on. But this one's quite different in the engines don't seem to be sure exactly quite how much. It's much more of a guessing game, just what the ratio, the percentages of life left. Versus life taken already. So yeah, that looked to be something that might cost Verstappen. But in the end, yeah, leclerc, I think he's going to look back on that one and think, I probably threw pole position away a little bit there. We'll come on to talk about him in a moment, but yeah, could end up being very crucial for the race because as good as the 2022 cars are in terms of being able to follow closely, the DRS zone being closer is a very narrow old school track and I think that will make overtaking very difficult. But considering what we have seen at other venues, I'm slightly more optimistic than I would have been if it were 2021 cards back again. Yeah, definitely. I think that's going to be an interesting point. It's something that's been asked of quite a few drives this weekend. It was put to Daniel Ricciardo after qualifying sales. He's fighting back from 18th on the grid, and he kind of grimaced a little bit when he was asked like, oh, is it going to be better? So we'll have to wait and see. But we'll get on to leclerc. Now you mentioned such fine margins between them at the end they're .021 seconds between him and Verstappen and it could be very, very decisive because of the struggle to overtake, as you say. Can you talk us through what Charles said about his mistaking Q three and what cost him and well, and I guess did it cost him pop position? Yeah, I think judging by his words and the sort of the time that he estimated he lost there. The mistake would have cost him about one tenth of a second and that obviously is enough to make it up on the other end in terms of getting poll against Verstappen. But yeah, essentially the problem went wrong for him in turn ten. Now sorry, this is once again a self indulgent anecdote that I'm going to give to the listeners for basically an FP one. I was lucky enough to sworn off track so I had to get as well. Twice in three sessions. I do tend to do that. It's just because I like to just get a different sense of difference. But it also also for the track side feature in the magazine, which I would urge everyone when they naturally go and buy the magazine on Thursday to read.

"For to be fair, I've never been to the beverage as a fan, but the orange army certainly make it look like a spectacle and a bit of a festival atmosphere, similar to sort of what Silverstone had, obviously, a bit more European feel. The one thing that did sour the taste, which is more of an ongoing thing is the booing or sorry, the cheering of when Lewis Hamilton crashed by the Max Verstappen fans. It's a difficult matter because I understand the upset and its part and parcel of the drama and a bit of the soap opera. And indeed, it's a million times worse in other sports football in particular. But yeah, it just is a bit unsavory. It's a bit like, yeah, he's already out. You don't need to like celebrate because of these previous rivalries. I know what you mean. It's where football but it's where Formula One becomes more football than more rugby. And rugby has intense rivalries, but at the final whistle. You go for a beer together, and all the fans of either side will talk about how your teams did, and everyone's Friends. And everyone is twice as drunk as at football. And everyone's still friends. And yet, in football, just because of no reason. You utterly hate the person standing next to you because they choose to support a team. And it went for me ones like that that I've got less time for. I mean, I know, was it on I was caught as last week when we were Silverstone we're doing the live podcasts from the GP racing fan village. Described it as a bit of panto. You know, you know, when the story was very fantastic. And I'm like, I don't know if I want F one to be so panto, but I guess, you know, I'm I don't know. The concern and I think perhaps to make it a bit more serious, the concern would be is if Hamilton say had a bigger accident and was injured and then you've got fans cheering because he's crashed. That is, yeah, that's just poor. Not that you need to, but you wouldn't see anybody cheering that Joe craft at the start of the British Grand Prix. No, but remember last year, when Hamilton and Verstappen came together at Silverstone, as Verstappen went through the gravel and hit and had that massive G impact, if you watch some of the Twitter videos or the videos that people posted after the event from their own cameras, the crowd, the Silverstone crowd, were like, way. Like, when he went off, there was a big cheer, and then a millisecond later when he hit everyone. Oh, that was nasty. But the instant reaction was to cheer Verstappen getting knocked off, so like the Brit fans did that and that's horrible, but still. It is both sides. This isn't British media. No, no, no, no, no. Which we told all the time that we're anti Verstappen. It couldn't be further from the truth. Definitely, if it goes the other way around, which would be fair we did see a bit of it, like you say, God has mentioned it about Silverstone and Verstappen getting booed or whatever like this. It does happen both ways in lots of places, but I think yeah, when it gets a bit more serious, that's when it starts crossing the line. The panto and the soap opera thing is one element, but if sort of danger and injury starts coming into it and they're still doing that, that's really bad. Dear listen, let us know your thoughts. "Race format. That it's about gender equality. It's about men and women racing together as a team, and both being equally decisive for victory. And we have seen incredible talent shine in that platform. I think female drivers have been really the stars of extremely mornings, Molly Taylor, many others. And that really makes us super proud in extremely. So thank you. On behalf of all our drivers, all the female drivers also all my team for this award that it's really fantastic to receive thank you. Now, it's time for international racing driver of the year. You were voting between Lewis Hamilton, and as usual, the united 7 time world champion led the charge from Mercedes last year versus Alex Paulo, who was quick and savvy on his way to the IndyCar title in just his second season. In the U.S. the 2021 Formula One World Champion, Max Verstappen, who held the advantage over Lewis Hamilton for much of the year and who dominated many of the stats like laps lead, pole positions and races one. Versus Nick de vries, which kind of makes this a 50% Dutch contest and a 50% Mercedes shootout. The formula three champion, and the winner was, you voted, Max Verstappen. Now we couldn't make it to the awards last night. Christian Horner picked up the award on his behalf, but he did send us this. Hello everyone. Max here. First of all, of course, I want to say a big thank you to all the fans for doing the international racing driver of the year. You know, it's been a very intense year, so all the support I got ready was amazing. But besides that, of course, I also would like to thank Red Bull Racing and on there for providing me with a winning car. The ultimate goal was of course to win the world championships. So now we've achieved that it's something truly incredible, but of course I'm also looking forward to this year again and see the orange army all over the world again. And yeah, I hope you guys all have a great evening. Enjoy. And as always, the final award of the night. We work our way towards the young driver award. "So i would be able to happen bit. Is it right as luke said like is it right. The takes two laps to award fifty percent of the points. It from grand prix. Nine the. I think we can all agree. That's not right and so yeah. Archetype is going to be a reflection going on and and working out ways that we don't let this happen again. I mean. I don't i don't know if they're going to go back on that and reclassify and take away point. Yeah i mean. It's definitely a learning option. I want to come onto the classification quickly. Because even off to the race finished and the faa pow i classification we then sort it was deleted and the most confusion about that because of the fact they said that it was classified off to that one lee. Can you just clarify that whole situation. Because they will probably be sorry though probably be found talked about that because yeah those who the noise about you know john two three laps and then it was cost. What often lot one. So what's the deal with that. Yes the rule with a red flag is that you take the result from one lap before the red flag came out. It's ruled that two thousand three the brazilian grand prix. That gave his win there for example. And that's always been the rules. So when we had the when when we had the final result come in and the classification said it was taken from the end of lap one because ultimately there they're only two four laps completed in d. minus one back and takes each latin. Then they need sort of argue. Well actually hang on a minute. Doesn't that go against the idea. Must complete to writing laughed. Because he didn't the fis nation for this was that in the regulations. It says that's long as the driver. Crosses control lime softening flying three times then that that satisfies that because therefore you go back you go back one and then you've got your laps economy contradicts deregulation little bit. But i mean that's that's how it is as explaining it as how they're saying it is a process. I think again. It's one of these. Rules is very much open to interpretation. So i don't think any day. I don't think anything's gonna come from at birth. Yeah again just more confusion again and again this kind of situation never expect it's going to happen and then it does and then he just leaves. Everyone really confused and upset angry. Did we have an answer. In regards to foster slap we know that when the coverage wound up foster slap. Does he still have the false slap. Does that change. Because of the fact that the classification was taken off the just like one outside changes so there is no fossils lap awarded which might be a i in grand prix history. But yes i k- right. I okay fine. There is the catholic Unpicked site looking forward. Of course today was a great day for george. Russell jammed great day for williams From stay drives. It didn't perform well in qualifying Relapse they weren't able to make any positions today looking food we go to on for next weekend warrior your thoughts and feelings towards the we hadn't ahead before we wrap things up jr ask uefa. It's going to be Brilliant for dutch founds is going to be amazing. Full at max's are jami but oleander nurses orange army depending on. Hey you want to claim it But yeah. I think that's going to be great. I think the atmosphere is going to be great. The maybe jerry's out for racing until we see it but set your expectations low. Then you can only be pleasantly surprised right. Amen to that lake your feelings going into the week and had wealth next week. Say yeah very similar. I think a track. I don't think he's going to lend itself to much overtaking and again. I'd like to be pleasantly surprised by do think. Thinking is going to be difficult. Even with the bank i corner and final corner that they've done to try and encourage recycling. I think is going to be very very tricky. Yeah i think that on the atmosphere is going to be good in some ways. But i think also. I think that we are gonna see probably what we saw. In hungary and the boeing and hostility towards lewis hamilton but times ten and. I think he's going to be a really really difficult weekend. Nothing on that front. I think that mercedes thing. They're very much going to be on enemy territory throughout that weekend. And yeah it's just something again a bit need. That's when i get you sort of like wanna be enthusiastic and you can get big tribal in terms of sport at times but yeah i just think it's gonna be. I would like to prove wrong. Thing is going to be one of those weekends. Where whatever lewis does on the impact or whatever. There's going to be this being in sharing which we read. That's that's unfortunate unavoidable. Unless perhaps the more die hard fans do rain in a little am realized that ultimately by e can just like boo someone and just be cool about things but anyway. Yeah i'm interested is a new track for and that's always quite cool. I think it's a good story. And i think frankly anything after what we've seen. Today i think is going to be good. I think we're going to hopefully get a really good race next weekend to sort of lift. Australia's a little bit. And then we go to monza and hopefully end the tripleheader in high. But yeah. I think it's going to be. It's going to be an interesting one definitely controversial lake. Oh i can't do we like to entertain jets. I'm not an i..

"Drying out of the skin is an issue. So i always keep a just spitzer bottle with water handy and dispersed the inside of the scandal. Keep it nice and pliable otherwise you run into issues getting feathers to cooperate and go where you want them to once they dry out. Alabi stuck Okay cool and then at home dusting that kind of thing like just general upkeep keep them looking at yes so i put so much time into like i know what goes into it so i when i do amount for myself which is extremely rare. I plan to put it in a glass case. Keep the dust off. That's not yeah. That's not realistic for most people. But if you got flying words or standing birds on a shelf a yearly dusting with feather duster with the grain of the feathers and very lightly. will will keep looking nice in if if you've had one that's been on the wall for several years it has had anything and there's been neglected. Most taxes are missile. It will let you bring it in and they'll show you how to of clean it up a little bit. Don't try anything crazy. That's how you miss it up but just a simple white feathers. Keep it out of you know if you got a window south facing window. That's got Direct sunlight away from that Keep it from fading and almost nobody smokes anymore but smoking you know like it coats everything will kind of ruin those feathers and turnham yellow. So yeah i think we've all probably could conjure up an image in our mind of the garage sale. Whatever that looks terrible and like i don't know if that's neglect or bad taxidermy. You're both you know. Probably a combination of yeah well. That's that's very good info on taxidermy. Like i said. I do want to catch up with you a little bit on arizona quail hunting a. What's the as your season about to close. I mean it's february second. I'm talking to you today. We till we go to the first weekend in february. Which is the seventh this year. So you're coming up on it. Yeah i had the day off from work today. And i chose to mount a burden. Amari kicking myself for it but on. Now you're with me on the podcast. Yeah you're really the reason. I stuck around home. The shooter quayle. The son probably doesn't set for awhile. Can you get out there. Oh yeah. I took after i probably will but yeah we. We get a really long season for the desert birds. And then just a two month season on merlin's mostly because they They ness later. They nest in july and august. Indecisive timber oishi. August into september and the even when you're shooting them in december if it's a good hatch year. They're all still really young and immature. Okay so i know enough about. I've never hunted quail in arizona but my uncle lives down on the outskirts. Phoenix actually recently moved used to be in chandler. But i know that that's where i live. Well i was gonna do that when you mentioned it earlier. he's So you've got gamble's quail in your backyard. I'm guessing because he used to have quail running around his back and go down and visit them by the pool but is that not the case for merging. You'd have to travel to get into a little bit. So yeah so for me yet. If you live so southern arizona basically across the whole you know south the tucson any of the mountain ranges down there. The foothills of the mountains Anything with oaks An knee-high grass and anywhere from twenty to fifty percent cover his basically going to have even a bad year like this year. The covey's were smaller. But i still found All the covey's i found last year. I i left him alone but i. Every every time i went out this year i went to a new place. In covey's there wasn't a time there has actually never been a time Except for when. I first started and didn't really know what i was looking for that i've gone out and not found a covey. I actually saw a hunter That came down from wisconsin. This past week. And i saw him out walking next road and stop nationalities doings. Like what do. I don't know what i'm doing. I see those trees. Just walk under those trees. You walk into the streets all day. You will find that cool. I was going to ask you about a public land. There's a ton of public arizona. I from what i gather from talking to folks. It's essentially public land pursuit hunting down there. Yeah nothing that i'm used to. I used to have to work hard for my land spots in nebraska But here i mean it's endless possibilities even private land here unless his posted no trespassing. You're hunting you can hunt so long. Yep yeah as long as you're ethical and respect the the the the landowner in his ground right we can keep it that way. Have you had have you run in the land owners out there that have checked in and talk to you about quail hunting. I'm generally pretty friendly. Yeah oh yeah for the most part. Yeah like i say as long as you steer clear we have laws a quarter. You can't shoot within a quarter mile of dwelling whether it's okay. Hide or not so a lot of. There's a unfortunately a lot of people that don't follow that but as long as you steer clear they're totally fine with you being out there for the most part And yeah a lot of them are friendly it being so sparse where i hunt. I haven't run into a lot of donors but the ones that have very friendly. What is your take on like. When you're out do you see a lot of other bird hunters and okay. So you're shaking your head. Also generally you don't see a lot of other bird hunters on a really good mergers year when the game and fish You know puts it out there that it's going to be a great year for mirna. It's almost like the orange army. That shows up in south dakota really the three years i've been here. We haven't had a really good year. Last year was pretty good. Calm this year's terrible there. i. I've only i've only out of the twenty or thirty mergers and i'm only shooting one out of a bigger covey and then leaving i don't chasing but i've only shot maybe thirty this year And only two of them have been young of the year birds so The they most people got the memo and decided to leave him alone for the year. I still hunt them more for dog. Were just to find them up. Just for the dog. i'll shoot one of out of covid. That's big enough But i i rarely see other hunters. And if i do. They're usually deer hunters. 'cause we are is right now. So they're out now. Yeah okay and i feel like and sounds like you've obviously got more up-to-date report obviously in the field experience too but i i felt like wasn't weren't people kind of i mean maybe it's just optimism. But were they thinking it was going to be a pretty good year for quail so yes okay. Desert quail okay. gambles specifically require winter and early spring rains to grow the winter. Annuals for chick. Survival now With have had to really good years of that end it came a little late this year. But it's looking like we might have third really good year Scaled quail or kind of a mixed between winter and summer rains but I met a guy who showed me some scaled quilt spots. That are reminiscent of the good old days back in new mexico when i used to hunt him with you know fifty seventy five hundred bird covey's while and most of the ones i shot of scaled quail this year where young of the year and same with gambles. They've just have been booming. The past couple years m- earns since they hatch so late or yet they hatch so late gambles will start nesting in february now or maybe a little bit later in the moderate. The moons like i said don't nest until very late summer early fall so they require the monsoon which is in the summer Which the past two years and probably before that have been pretty dismal And they just did not have the chick survival this year without without without that so it was a really good year for gamble's pretty good year for scaled but just a. I talked to an old timer. That i did see out..

nebraska today last year Last year twenty september south dakota august two month chandler new mexico fifty percent three years february july This past week both thirty february second first
