"one thousand feet" Discussed on What a Weird Week

"So. Catching you up on the weird news of the week, this is the what a weird week show eight. Number eight this week is the horse that got loose on a plane. I think I speak for most of us when I say I have had it with these monkey loving horses on this monkey loving plane. Here's the headline from ABC News plane forced to return to JFK after horse on board gets loose. I mean, thirty one thousand feet loose horse. As someone who's had no post-secondary education, not a pilot, not an air traffic controller. I would like to say I feel like they made the right choice to turn back. Do you think at some point they thought maybe they could make a go of it, like still finish the trip? Good morning, control. This is Whiskey Tango Niner. We've got a horse loose on board. Please advise Whiskey Tango Niner. This is control. Do you think you can make it to Topeka? Do you think how how frisky is that horse? Is the horse bucking right now? Is it a is it a bucking situation? Control, this is a Whiskey Tango Niner. We think maybe we better turn back. The horse just ate Larry's pants. I mean, there's more to the story. We'll put the link in the show notes, but that's probably a good spot to end. Poor Larry. Seven number seven is kind of a follow up. It's another weird animal story that happened this week. It's a follow up to the Colombian hippo crisis where there are hippos in Colombia and they're not supposed to be there. And they have tended to thrive. They were brought in by someone who was an entrepreneur in the illegal drug trade. And one of the things was wanted to have some hippos, some personal hippo pets after that person's estate was abandoned. The hippos escaped and thrived. And they're not supposed I mean, they're not native to Colombia. They're dangerous. Those things are dangerous. And I believe we mentioned this when we covered the story originally. I'm not sure if you're aware those things are hungry, hungry also. I mean, all the data we have points to the hippos being hungry, hungry. You know what you're like when you're hungry. It's just not good. So the Colombian government has begun their program of having the hippos spayed or neutered. That's kind of the follow up. There's more to it if you want to read it. Maybe you just want to go play hungry, hungry hippos now. That's how I'm feeling. Who's with me? So. This is what a weird week, our weird news countdown, and thanks for being here. Number six. Now it's deer who are trying to draw us out of our homes using the oldest trick in the book. We've had a lot of stories about bears walking up, rocking up to somebody's front door and ringing the doorbell cam and then pretending to be, what, selling something or. Hi, my car broke down. And then you open the door and the bear eats you. It's some of that is speculation, but some of that is documented fact. Well, now we have a video of a deer doing the same thing. What's the deer going to do? Obviously, the deer wants to get into your kitchen, get into what? Some delicious cabbage and apples. That deer is going to get into your larder and eat your apples. Is that where you keep apples? Did you catch the part earlier in this show where I said I didn't have any formal education, post-secondary education? Pause. I'm looking up larder.

"Reality is that this system has had north of a trillion dollars invested in it since its inception right in terms of like the control tower. Only trucks control towers all the training everything. So you go to somebody who's invested northbound trillion dollars and say. Tear it out and replace it with this thing. You've got to have a really good reason for why. What are the costs wherever the impact in is anything yet. Worse the worse. There's no point doing well. I mean imagine a just a thousand of these little planes moving around. I'm in houston moving around. Houston they're not going along the freeway path necessarily they're moving in different directions. And if can you imagine how. I can't even imagine the two way communication to get all these guys. Hey i'm gonna fly from here to the galleria going this way now. You know you can't go. You need to be at three thousand feet or one thousand feet i. I can't imagine how that's going to. It's a crazy complicated technical problem but even if you solve it you've you gotta get it. You know you gotta get deployed and if you can't it doesn't matter the how these aircraft can do these missions. And now you think about drone delivery right Walgreens is now in in certain areas testing out delivering cova testify drunk The the reality is that when we think about airspace. It has to digitize everything about industries in general it's a digital transformation right same thing for aviation but one of the things that kept coming up over and over and over again when i talked to regulators around the world was the challenges that you're dealing with when it comes to the air. Traffic management system is one hundred percent. What we're dealing with when it comes to streak when it comes to climate change when it comes to any of these kinds of things if you go to a trucking company and you tell them we're gonna mandate that you buy electric cars. We're going to switch to hydrogen trucks through. They're gonna come to you and say well look i've got trucks today. That bring boxes from twenty two point And if i switch. I'm gonna spend a lotta time. We spend a lot of money at the end of the day. What trucks have been boxes and pointed right. so why should i switch. Is there an economic value. Probably right in terms of hawks. Is there a a market competitiveness advantage. Potentially if you have customers have net zero mandates patio but purely from a operations perspective. Does it make sense to go to the pain of truck. You know literally scrapping your old trucks. Buying new trucks.

"He was just a person of interest not yet a formal suspect on the nineteenth. Unfortunately and this was the day that i did my last update on this case is i announced that a body had been recovered in teton national. Forest in wyoming. It was less than one thousand feet from where the red white and the thune loggers who who videoed the van and the doors closing everything on your spread. Creek disperse campground. Her body was in fact found less than a thousand feet from that spot. At that point things started to change. But brian still yet wasn't considered a formal suspect in this. He was still a person of interest the press conference to if you didn't watch that win. That happened when they announced that they had found a body that was really hard to watch. the fbi agent was breaking down quite a bit and it was just devastating. Obviously everyone kind of thought. This might be the case that you know something bad probably happened to her but anytime you see that press conference and you see these agents who. They spent so much time searching. Her stepfather flouts helps search as well. You have people searching in florida to have you know the worst fear come out. I mean that that day was when it just really seemed to hit everyone after after the nineteen th. They did confirm through an autopsy. Her deck was ruled as a homicide. Is there any significance to that. In your opinion having ruled a homicide right away so we had a discord. And if you're interested in discussing this case. Laurie valo any others. Checkout or show notes you'll see the link to it as well as if you're on youtube you can click the link. There encounter dischord where we discuss. All of these cases basically all day long end up But one of our members an attorney and she actually defined it as long as follows homicide versus murder is going to be state specific at times but typically homicide is the intentional killing of another in murder. Is the intentional. Killing of another with malice. Forethought okay so earlier. Today brand laundry officially became a suspect and a warrant was actually issued for his arrest. Switch this is the moment that we have all been waiting for But it didn't happen for reasons that we kind of expected. I guess okay so news. Release from the fbi stated that a federal arrest warrant for brian christopher landry was issued it was related to mr laundries activities following the death of gabriel petito and it is re in regards to use of unauthorized access device. So it reminds me a lot of hell. We all knew. Laurie is up to no good but they couldn't necessarily prove something had happened to the kids. Get and so. They got her on Neglect and endangerment and what was basically just quick charges to get them in custody. Kinda keep working on the case. It kind of reminds me of that. That's exactly what is happening so use of unauthorized access devices. What does that mean. It is the unauthorised use at any type of access device entity such as a credit or debit card issued to another individual. So as any just said it's kind of like they're quick short pass and football to get them arrest. Get him arrested because he did utilize her debit or credit card to the tune of one thousand dollars apparently on his trip back home at least somewhere. We don't know the specifics yet. But the fbi believes are knows that a obviously he wasn't the owner of the card and she was already deceased at that point..

How Far Can a Plane Glide Without Engines?

"In nineteen eighty three a perfect storm of technical issues and unit conversion mistakes left an air canada boeing seven sixty seven without fuel. Some forty one thousand feet. That's twelve thousand. Five hundred meters over central canada before long. It lost power to both engines after descending rate of twenty five hundred feet. That's seven hundred sixty meters per minute. The pilots were able to glide their boeing all the way to save albeit bumpy landing on a race car track. The pilots were hailed heroes and the airplane was dubbed the gimli glider after the town where it landed essentially any plane can glide if the need arises and in situations where all the engines have failed. Pilots have to expect the plane to do some gliding. Without the thrust those engines are built to provide. The plane can't help but lose altitude but how far can a plane glide when it's not designed to be a glider aircrafts whose engines conch out at higher elevations can glide for longer periods of time. This is one of the reasons. Why shellenberger and skulls hudson river landing was so impressive. They had to glide their way to safety and a matter of minutes from a pretty low altitude. Everything happened very fast on. Us airways flight forty nine fifty one. The plane hit the birds within two minutes of taking off and just three minutes later. The plane was in the hudson river. Obviously planes come in all shapes and sizes. So if you're flying one it's important to know your vehicles. Best glide speed in a nutshell. This is the speed that will let your airplane travel the farthest distance while sacrificing the least amount of altitude. A related concept is the minimum sink speed or the pace of travel that will maximize how much time you can spend gliding depending on your situation. You may choose to prioritize time over distance or vice versa

"Runs the risk of further. Isolating them all right. So if you have a situation in your life where you're going to be stuck inside and you're going to be watching tv if you're not playing a video game with friends. Then why wouldn't i wanna give you the avenue to have these social the way that you wish it to be. You know other people out there who don't follow the everything in moderation rule of life probably. They're probably are people who have gotten an adaptive controller xbox and they blew off going to somebody's wedding and doing a toast because they went around rather play the latest. You know super mario sonic game. I can't tell you whether or not that's happened. When i can tell you is that there are more people who would have been bored out of their minds as they not have the ability to connect with these virtual worlds than people who misuse the technology and have gotten addicted to shooting involved with their friends. What's what's your favorite game that you're playing right now. My favorite game right now is probably rocket week. Yes yes okay you are you on. Cbs four. i'm on three. I'm on pc. Okay we'll have to. We have to exchange. My gamertag is oh. It's big ron exchange game. But i'm rusty. I haven't played in a while and i started playing fortnight in during the pandemic and but i mean there's something there's something humiliating about being devastated by like an eleven year old but she were killed by a bunny rabbit who was surfing on a rocket. Who was doing cheering chirping noises. That manage the home in on you from one thousand feet away. There be mad about that like it's not it's not serious and you know That's what i really like about those kind of games. It's just that it's a competitive nature and sure. I'm proud of the fact that i only play with a mouse and a tracker on my head. I don't use keyboard. I don't use a controller and i'm freaking diamond in rocket week so i was gonna ask because i'd like a silver three. I want to say so you're of the game is just like soccer. You're just trying to score the ball into the other team's goal and there's a hierarchy system. Steve you wanna explain the hierarchy system. Yes the hierarchy the way the game works like every video game has a ranking system. Where you start at bronze and then you progress to silver and gold and platinum and diamond in the champion and what was. The ranks are changes based on the game. But it's always the same five rank system which basically allows the game to put you up against people assembler skill level so that people who are lower skill level don't get destroyed by the highest levels and feel bad about themselves and then the people at the top. Don't get bored because they don't have a competition. Exactly you know it's funny is i spent so many years getting destroyed in every other game online saying you know what i just wanna play on line anymore until rocky lee comes along. It's like come on ronald you'll play with a bunch of other people who are all as terrible as you are and you'll have put it will be really competitive. 'cause you'll all like all like y'all be terrible in the same way together while like learning the game steve. Clearly i love video games. Video games and i'm guessing a lot of our listeners. Do to what are some things they can do to help. Make gaming more accessible for everyone. Course i'm gonna tell you that. We need donations. You can go to able to gamers dot org. You can check us out on any of the social media's able gamers so you have a dollar five dollars twenty thousand dollars. It doesn't matter if you have that kind of cash give out that it helps. So the average controller is three hundred and fifty dollars to make the average session for someone to sit with us and the fully-funded to go through peer. Counseling is about eight hundred. Fifty dollars goes through up much higher if someone has a profound disability that takes you know more time getting to know them and their situation and how to help them on a very personal level but you. That's that's where essentially your donations go. So if you have the ability to we always say please consider donation if you are not in a place where financially that makes sense you can always just talk about. It will gamers and people with disabilities now. That sounds extremely generic. Here's the thing about that game. Companies only care about what is being talked about so people aren't talking about how accessibility options are important about how they want to support people with disabilities about how people with disabilities manner in games and they want to see that representations for people that don't look like them than the support goes away the only reason that company's support initiatives for people that are not quote unquote in the mainstream audience is by them figuring out that oh they are in the mainstream audience and they do matter and we can make money off of them. And that's and that's how we get that done by going out twitter. You're going out to instagram talking about this kind of thing. Tweeting at your favorite companies face booking. You know that's all you can support it. Will game was the best and if you're a developer out there listening goto accessible games. It's a free thing you can go check out all the material for free right now. There is a certified course that you can take for a couple of hundred dollars to be certified to be able to be accessible developer. But if that's not within the budget of your studio you can always look at the material for free online and check it out and incorporate that into your next game. Are there any movies or books to learn more about assessing ability generally there is a great documentary or crypt camp. It's on netflix. Is right now. You can check it out. It goes through the entirety of what it's like to be a disabled person. And what it is that people maybe not seeing in their everyday lives to people with disabilities have to go through. There's also a a great movie that was released a years ago. All about the ada the creation of it called the sound of thought and it's really About how these two guys when he was disabled one who was not wanted the ability to go out in the public without being harassed for being disabled and how businesses really weren't taking the disability community seriously. It's very heart wrenching to me to remember to remind people that if you are thirty five years old or older within your lifetime. It was legal to discriminate against people with disabilities. If i had gone into a mcdonalds. When i was one years old they could've kicked me out for using a wheelchair because i was upsetting the other guests and that's something that a lot of people tend to forget because we have very short memories when it comes to things like this so remember that you know. "But we've only finished the first of three lags on this journey to the yukon beginning the second leg. Jack must make a choice as he sets foot on. Alaskan soil. does he hid out from the established overnight. Town of or should he get going from its neighboring and fellow nascent the now thriving town skagway. The two are only a few miles apart from each other but each leads to the start of very different trails over some serious mountains die will take him through the chilcott pass. I'll skagway leads to the white pass. Both have their pros and cons. Luckily you don't have to decide. I'm going to take you on both. Not wanting to ditch jack london just yet. Let's fall him on the chill coot basically this trails for fans of mountaineering. So i hope jacqueline has been working on as cardio and doing his endurance training. Chill coot is grueling. Thirty three mile path that increases several thousand miles in elevation and the last half miles is just cruel in that short distance along the trail. Climbs one thousand feet. It is so steep here. It actually has a fifteen hundred step. Staircase carved into the ice and snow appropriately. The gold fever stampedes call it. the golden staircase. Have you ever seen klondike. Gold rush photos of countless people warmly covered from head to toe ascending steep snow-covered paths in a line longer than those at an amusement park during peak hours. If so it's probably a photo from the chill cute trail in a case that doesn't sound difficult enough to some of you endurance athletes. Let's add a ton of weight to the equation. I mean that ton literally as in two thousand pounds. Naturally the exact number will differ for every klondike. But that's a fair estimate. In addition to their clothes and equipment are required by canadian. Lot to bring a one year supply of food if they skimp amount team very well. Stop them right here on the path summit so in order to move. Although supplies klondike are going back and forth on this arduous thirty three mile trail our future author jack. London figures that in moving his gear. He traveled each mile of the chill. Could pass twenty to thirty times. Good god if jack wasn't in shape when he got here he is now some get help moving their gear. By hiring less well-off stampedes or indigenous packers before personally setting off this massive eighteen ninety seven to ninety eight gold rush schuylkill. Jim in george karmic. Met doing this job here on the shelf pass in fact. Jim's nickname scoop them comes from that work. Scuba means strong in its new jargon and that's certainly inaccurate description of this well built physically powerful tag man. Okay now let's check out the other out the white pass trail here. We are back at the head of the tei inland. We're just a few miles away from die now. In skagway this path is longer. It's also significantly easier so if you're looking at one of those photos of stampede is still in a ridiculously long line but on far more level terrain and accompanied by horses might have been taken here and yes not being so steep. It needs a little staircase to surmount. Stampede can use horses to carry their supplies through the white pass. Nice unfortunately some conquers knowledge of and concern for their beasts of burden does not equal. They're interesting getting gold. As a result the over pack and overwork their horses as the fatigued animals trudge along the slick. Snowing boulder covered trail might slip and sometimes deadly results as tens of thousands of klondike take this path. Hundreds of horses plummet to their death on the white pass trail of course. Horses aren't the only casualties on these trails. All sorts of dangers await stampede. My dine avalanche like the one that kills forty three men climbing chill cute on april third eighteen ninety eight then hypothermia disease as well suicide and even murder short as the second leg of the journey may be. It's the most dangerous but those stampede who persevere through either the chill or white passes aren't done yet the other side only puts them at the headwaters of the yukon river usually at lake lindemann or it. They now have to build their own boats and take them the last five hundred or so miles dawson city. This goes smoothly for some like author. Jack london having taken the chill cooed pass. he's now at lake linden. He and his group take two weeks to build a boat. Then push off on the lake the white horse rapids post plenty of danger but they manage it then co safely through the more placid remaining four hundred miles all told they spend about one month and they're small watercraft others aren't so lucky beyond struggling to build about so many lives are claimed by the waters here that the canadian police begin to regulate travel for instance. If a party includes women and children they're flat out forbidden from the white horse rapids. They'll have to carry their boats down past that point before getting on the water. So we've made it to dawson city and there are many fascinating fun stories that can be told of life. Appear perhaps best known. is that of the successful prospector. Courtesy of bad at math. Good at pitch meetings terrible humanity. Christopher columbus who discovered pineapples in guadeloupe in fourteen ninety three and brought them back to spain. It is no exaggeration to say that europeans went wild for this exotic delicacy described by one british landholder in barbados as far beyond choicest fruits of europe the moment these exotic edibles hit british shores. They were an immediate smash hit followed by the equally immediate an incontrovertible conclusion that they could not be cultivated in england. People still tried though and tried and tried for nearly two hundred years. They kept at it so desirable was that pineapple. britain's climate is so anathema to tropical plants. The modern chocolate trade when shipping cacao trees for transplant elsewhere. Send them first to the uk to quarantine. Because none of the diseases they carry can survive their european. Growers were finally able to succeed in the eighteenth century. By dint of hothouses a hothouse is slightly different from a greenhouse in that greenhouses are formed exclusively by the sun and hothouses have some form of artificial heat. If you happen to have a hot house or you live in a fairly warm climate and think you might give growing pineapples ago. I have good news and bad news. The good news is you can start a pineapple plant from the pineapple. You got to the grocery store twist off the leafy crown and remove the lower inch or two of leaves. Let it dry for a day or so then. Put it in a jar of warm water. Making sure to submerge only the leaf free area. Change the water every few days and when the crown has grown roots least three inches long. You can plant it after that. You're on your own. The bad news is in addition to temperature and very specific soil characteristics. Altitude is a factor in pineapple success in hawaii. The best pineapples in terms of sugar content and sugar acid balance growing band of elevation around one thousand feet were three hundred meters. So what made european botanist horticulture lists and agriculturalists so damn determined to make these things grow in a place they simply weren't meant to grow. It was the intersection of two characteristics. One pineapples didn't survive the two months it took to get them from the new world to the old king charles. The second was sent a shipment of pineapples but only one arrived in still edible condition. Hopefully the sailors on that ship eight. The pineapples as they started to turn because pineapples have more vitamin c than oranges. A few ounces of pineapple once a week could stave off scurvy. And i'm sure it would be a welcome break from rotten beef and really bread. At least for the first few weeks king chas was absolutely smitten with his first and for a while only taste of pineapple. He had a portrait painted of his gardener handing him a pineapple a cropped version of which was one of this week's mystery monday clues and speaking of things. British congratulations to dale for guessing correctly and king charles also called his favorite mistress his little pineapple the aristocracy. So revered this multi-fruit that they dumped it king. Pine and reason to the european diet didn't have a lot of sweet things in it cane. Sugar was expensive being imported from asia. Ripe fruit was generally only available in the moment it was right and honey was a treat further rich or for the most special occasions unless you kept your own bees during the height of its popularity. Pineapples would sell for as much as eight thousand dollars a piece in today's money. If you couldn't afford to buy one you could always rented that's right. You could rent a pineapple. Obviously in that case you can't eat it. So what do you do with it. You look at it. You have your friends around to look at it. You put it in the center of the table during a party. Everybody can see how fabulously wealthy and fashionable and well-connected. You must be to have gotten your hands on a pineapple. It wasn't uncommon for the holy ploy to carry the pineapple around with them like a designer handbag. And to me. It makes about as much sense. Maybe you could crash someone else's party by bringing your fashionable pineapple along with you and even bigger douche move and that guy who always brings his guitar with him to parties and begins to play even though literally no one ever asked him to ever being such a valuable commodity. The pineapples had to be protected. Some nobles even had their servants sleep with the pineapples so they couldn't be stolen now. I picturing an ocean's eleven style heist movie to steal. A single pineapple from pedestal in the center of a room of sleeping servants sort of grand theft primarily at the close association with parties is how pineapples became iconic graphic of hospitality. They were incorporated into sculptures and building designs both private and public. You can.

"Researchers are designing human in the loop experiments to make approach and landing as safe as possible. This innovation now bringing you stories behind the ideas that shape our future. A stabilized approach for landing is based on the pilots interpretation of certain visual clues for every three nautical miles flown over the ground. The aircraft should descend one thousand feet but pilots must control speed calculate descent rates and use precision instruments to ensure. They're not landing too high too. Fast or out of alignment with the runway. Faa researchers are testing pilot reactions to various approach and landing scenarios by putting actual pilots into flight simulators. At the william j hughes technical center. The simulators can be programmed to mimic different conditions. Information is collected about the pilot's ability to recover and whether the pilot had adequate data in the cockpit to make safe decisions about landing. In Heat and Humidity, Watch for Lawn Diseases.

"Tell us a little bit about all this hot and humid weather. I know that now's the time you have to watch for lawn. Diseases. Well mark that is indeed true, and that's that's. It's kind of an annual thing. However We've had let us where I live now that that it varies considerably, but we've had. been rains some deluge, and then submitted ranged kept lawns moist to the points at the do point Do Point on. The grass can last until nine ten, nor even eleven o'clock in the morning to the point that that. Okay that much moisture. High humidity which is I'M GONNA. Say just simply yesterday. I tried to watch some windows. And I. Put it try because it was done at eight thirty in the morning. Before the Sun hit! It was so humid that the windows wouldn't dry when glass won't dry. It's H-. Hot, humid so anyhow. Fungi exist in the air at all times. They're blowing around there. Probably in the first thousand feet above the ground, and they settle and a Cetera when they settle on a susceptible plant and each kind of like the human cold, each each person gets a cold for a different reason, but it's still basically the same. Win Those spores are on the grass blades, and then we get a cold shower at six thirty in the evening and or high humidity or both the whole night long. Is a wonderful time for those fungi to Germany when they germinate, they send what is indeed kind of a tiny little room into the plant where it's been can grow if he is a fungi. That's going to cause disease He does that ring now. I don't know that these things are running rampant, but I have been told about red. Dollar spot. Guy. Guy Boaters Lawn I. Don't know week or so ago that he his tennis shoes turned orange. Well that indicates to me. That is lawn has arrested disease. What to do about it well. I. See about getting into a high rise you to mess with it, but more importantly. Some of these things are when I'm GONNA call natural. That doesn't mean they're good, but blue glasses which are prevalent in our area along with them, some of the new tall will turf type all fescue. Each one is a living in a d much baloney on it. There's hundreds of millions of them in a given long. When there is a spore when there is high humidity darkness. And, then temperatures are up. These guys are guys. Tales Germinate. Take a hold on the lawn and cause a problem now. sometimes you can't present them by putting on. They fun just side before the fact, but then how do you know that's going to happen? Well, that's where you have a lawn care company. That's that's where they try to stay did. I'M GONNA. Life in this now to Arborist who told me in a in a dry year when he sprays for fun decides and and protection of plants. He becomes a miracle worker. In a wet year, which we've had three of a row, he can spray with the same stuff same same everything. Mean to do just as good a job, and at the same time the fungi will germinate, and the way they go and prevention will have helped, but he won't stop the diseases so right now I would say along with other lawn care factors set that blade high, and and as a matter of fact high as you can is a good thing, which and then does trap some more water, but it also allows the plans to have enough leaf hype to gain enough sun to make enough food to sustain, or let's just say direct toward a well grown plant, even though there's millions of and that's that's the overall and it so Try It will if it comes down to your needs to water your lawn. Do not water in the evening. I'm going to say after dinner time at all I want that long going into nighttime dries and be on the surface at least so the next morning you can sit up the sprinkler and run it for three hours a spot deliver that one inch of water you'll have benefited the lawn, but drive by Neuner soon thereafter, and it'll start holding the disease at bay, just in a more or less normal way, or let's say by virtue of the way you care for the lawn.

"Is the global pandemic making. You wish you could take a quick break from planet earth. Our next story will help you do to stop over the past six months. Things to do in Krabi, Thailand

"We are talking about crabby Thailand. It has province in the southwest side of Thailand that has absolutely beautiful beaches says and cliff sides amazing food and more culture than you could possibly want stuffed the tiniest little spot. What is your connection with Krabi? So when my my husband and I sold everything to travel the world fulltime we didn't know much except for the fact that Thailand was cheap. We bought one way tickets to Bangkok Thailand because they were the cheapest for this tickets that we can get from home and we've really wanted something different well. After spending two weeks and Bangkok and realizing that the city life was way too much for us. If you've been to Bangkok you know the little intense in culture shocking. When you're first coming there from the Western world is like your first and traction with Asia so we had heard from some friends about this place? It's called crabby that it's really cool. There's some nice beaches and I grew up in Miami Florida so that was something that was very appealing to me right being right the ocean and seeing islands what we flew down there in what originally originally we thought was going to be just a three day trip and we ended up extending for three consecutive weeks. And now we've been back there four times the last two years ears and one of the places that I'm going to be talking about called railway between them back there seven times in the last two years Including to celebrate our honeymoon. So I'm excited. Yeah congratulations and why should somebody to copy. Somebody should go to crabby because it's so full of culture and it's small still well. It's one of those places that in a place like Thailand where you have places like Pu cut in Pattaya that are coastal and beautiful and rich of culture but stuff full of tourists crabby is almost undiscovered undiscovered enough. It still has people and they're still enough infrastructure to make it a comfortable place to go vacation but it's also a place where you can go and take a boat that it's ten minutes away to rally beach and have this beautiful cove of limestone cliffs and Gorgeous sunsets and feel like you have paradise almost to yourself especially especially when you're traveling there in low season which will talk about. What kind of ten are you gonNA recommend for us so today? I'm going to be talking about a seven day through crabby grabby. Most people only go there for a couple of days. So we're GONNA go really in depth about the beautiful places. We're going to go to some hikes we're going to take you through some islands. Lynne's and some coves that you can go visit and also some local gems that not a lot of people go to their about two hours away and also talking about an absolutely beautifully beautifully untouched national park in Thailand cool. Well let's get started where we're gonNA start going to land in the beautiful province of crabby Thailand and then had stray the onto railay beach for day one so we probably flew in through Bangkok. And we're catching a local Thailand airline to get down here. Yes and usually. They're very very very inexpensive. It'll be about route fifty bucks to fly into crabby and then a six dollar grab ride into the area which is where the main beaches are. There's there's a walking street there but for the first day we're going to go straight to the pier. Where for just three dollars? You can take a ten minute long tail boat to Railay beach. You'RE GONNA land on Railay Beach West us and immediately you are welcomed by these enormous one thousand foot limestone cliffs. That are just so dramatic and they hug the coastline. So the moment you come in. It's almost like the class are giving you a hug of welcome you land on the beach and it's crystal clear water you're walking through and you can already see all all of the traditional long tail boats and listen to time music and then as you're going through the really beach walking street on either side you're going to have vendors trying to serve you pad Thai or Tomko guy which are all really typical dishes of the south and it just overwhelms the census and I know time but I don't know the other one okay. So autom- Kakai is coconut soup dish. And it's made with lemon grass and tomatoes and mushrooms and you can have it with chicken but even just the vegetarian version. It's just the perfect blend of sweet and fresh. It's one of my favorite dishes in south Thailand dimmed that have not been further south than Bangkok. So Oh I don't know that interesting out there. I know I know I. I've been to Thailand. I don't know three or four times now but But have not been to the beaches so one other thing that I wanted to pause while while breaking word that you mentioned taking grabs a we want to have the grab APP on her phone when we get there. And that's the Thailand Thailand. But it's a like Uber absolutely and the Nice thing is and we'll talk about some negotiation skills later on in places where the grab is too far away in order to get to. We use grab as a negotiation strategy as well so we will put in the location. See how much the grab drivers are charging and then use that as a base price negotiate sheet with Tuk Tuk taxis and that works well especially if you're in a hurry or you need to catch a bowl or you have a tour planned out and you don't have time to wait and see if you're grab is going to show up. That's a great method ticket to get around in Thailand as well so we've made it to really of each. Were walking through the Railay beach walking street and then literally like I mentioned. You're just overwhelmed with the southern Thailand. Vibes lives the food. You have monkeys. They have dusky lingers in Thailand. I call him little thieves because they are these fuzzy black monkeys with white circles around their eyes. They almost like raccoons but they are just so sweet they hang and perch on all of the trees above the walking street so literally there may be like three feet above your head dropping leaves on view as their munching on them. And so you're able to walk through and they're called a little thieves so I'm guessing they're so sweet until they take your stuff so actually not those. I call them little thieves. They look like they're wearing a scheme but they do also have a long tail macaques which they call the Thailand Mafia. Those absolutely steal your stuff got got it so anyway when you get to relieve each we have a favorite resort that we stay at. That's called the Railway Putu one resort. It's unreal East which is a more quiet side railway west as we're all all of like the really absurdly expensive five-star hotels brush your teeth for you. If you were to ask on the railway puts a one is a leave. It's a four star hotel but it has an absolutely amazing view of the islands in Thailand like COPE EP and all of the area over there on the west coast. And when you talk about the silence these are these karst mountains fantastic things look like they're out of some sort of special effects for movie. Yes they look like. You're going through Avatar Avatar this world and also something that I didn't realize when it came to cliffs attract bats because you're silvery caves so at nighttime you're sitting on the balcony. You have an infinity pool that looks over the ocean. It's framed by these absurdly enormous limestone cliffs. You're watching the monkeys from your balcony. Play in the the trees and swing from vine to vine and it just doesn't even look real. I told my husband last time that we are on railway west I was like if I had to explain to God or the universe or whatever ever what my paradise would look like it would be railay beach at sunset it now. You talked about having the resort with the infinity pool and so people who haven't met a Thailand. They're thinking you're spending four or five hundred dollars per night or up from there. What are the rates for that kind of place in Thailand? Oh my gosh rush. I think we paid fifty dollars during the beginning of high season for a room with a beautiful view about Johnny and it was private and the bathroom author was gorgeous. It had a Batta that also had a window wall. But it's only one way so people from the pool champion. You could literally be taking a bath and be staring at this. The outside it's crazy all right them. That's what you're going to be doing in the first avenue. Beach checking into that hotel and then as far as things to do on rarely beach it really has something for everybody if you wanted to. Just sit on the beach on railway west which is the most popular one or my personal favorite. which has put on Numb beach? It's a little bit of a walk as maybe like fifteen minutes off of railway west but personally it's just there's less people there. There's an enormous cliffside that turns into okay that you can swim to from that beach and also so one of the more interesting bits about that. Beach is the fact that they have something called penon cave or princess gave. And it's actually a worshiping location Asian for the Princess God of fertility. I think it was Shiva. And fishermen would bring Phallic shape statues and put them in the cave before fishing thing because that was supposed to yield a fruitful fishing expedition. And so literally you walk into this giant cave just Pena statues everywhere. But it's it's all part of the religion and the culture so not meant to be an appropriate. Obviously also on. This is really common common for people to go rock climbing railay beach and that towns I area which is on the same bay is known for having some of the best free climbing cliffs in the world because they are so textured word and so it's a great place to learn. It costs about thirty dollars to go on one of the expeditions to go and try rock climbing for the first time. And you're trying it out on one of the most beautiful full and scenic tropical locations in the world. You mentioned a lot of boats are the boots that are on the beach just fishing boats or are there water sports career as well so not so much water sports if you're looking for things like parasailing and things like that or wake boarding you're not gonNA find that they're not even honestly. I haven't even seen a banana boat. A lot of people do Kayak however and You can rent a kayak for about six dollars an hour and that lets you go and see things like Coda and chicken island which are only about forty five minutes kayaking from the railway West Beach. When you've been about there are some people who are listening? Who are wondering what you're talking about so banana? An anti votes are those. They're literally in the shape of a banana but people kind of straddle them and it'll be like eight people on the back of a boat and it'll drag you and then throw you under the water. It goes really fast.

Commemoration of 'Blade Runner'

"Welcome to the frame. I'm John Horn nearly four decades ago. The Ridley Scott Film Blade runner was released used. The movie is set in Los Angeles in November two thousand nineteen and to commemorate the date micro the arts and entertainment editor at our website site. Elliot's put together an oral history of the nineteen eighty two film. I spoke with Mike about the physical production of the movie and why it's nighttime setting was integral to its filming. Mike began by briefly. recapping the movie. You know it's a fascinating story. A set in twenty one thousand nine Los Angeles the Far Future. Sure and they're trying to hunt down. androids have gone bad. Basically now making blade runner was not an easy process. And if you notice anything about bladerunner owner it's almost always at night. So why is the nighttime look of blade runner central to the story when the big reasons was because they shot and most of it on the back. Lot Of Warner Brothers you know. They had looked at scouting in Chicago and New York. And we're talking about maybe shooting in Hong Kong or Mexico City. Whatever the cities they had in mind but I ended up just because of cost now working outs and so they said we're gonNA shoot this on the back? Lot and Ridley Scott's big idea was well we make night you know you never know what's beyond the edges of this. This shot you especially. They also add that filter of rain in every scene. So that sorta covered up things and you could imagine a bigger world out there than just a few streets on a back lot doc. I WANNA play a clip from Sydney mead. Who is the visual futurist for the movie where he talks about the inspiration and coming up with the design of the city in the film primarily from Chicago Chicago and New York because they're grid cities and New York already had buildings? You know over one thousand feet. Well they embark stayed building and So I thought well well let's add another thousand feet or so so I had this vision of these incredible tall buildings. So he's talking about the kind of the verticality of the city. How how do they end up creating that? Because you can't really build thousand foot tall buildings you know this was before we had huge. CGI level is just models. They were doing specially the famous opening in the movie. Show these smokestacks and that's not really how future Los Angeles turned out. But they created this using small models and look. I think having having that dark shot at night look having the rain covering things up. You never really know this. The seems within and creates an amazing visual a fair and when the film is coming together there's a a lot of conversation about acid rain and pending environmental problems. Obviously the world is a much more dangerous place today owing to climate change so in terms of like the setup for the story it feels like they were really right about the degradation of the planet. And how that would affect the story that they were telling you know. They really were thinking about the environment. It was a different problem though because acid rain. You know it's something that doesn't get talked about in the same way because that isn't the issue we're facing now. We just found ourselves with many any other environmental problems over the years But the talking to the screenwriter Hampton. fancher the thing that really drove him in writing the screenplay was concerned about the environment he really wanted to focus on that That's the reason why you have. That constant rain throughout the film blade runner became very iconic part of that film and It sort of gives a little bit of weight to what you're seeing in this sort of crazy science fiction film. We're talking with Mike Rowe about blade runner and its depiction of Los Angeles in two thousand. Nineteen it's fair to say that the finishing of the movie did not go smoothly. In fact Ridley Scott. The director lost the film and Harrison. Ford was called back back to do what we you and I can agree with a terrible narrations so what happened and why Harrison Ford so bad in the narration and that he gives over the movie you know they were already running over budgets from making the sets on the back lot Su Trying to create this big imagination the Ridley Scott had the thing that really really send them over. The edge was there is potentially going to be a director strike from the directors guild. It never ended up happening but they have the shoot two weeks film in one week so they had to pay overtime and shoe basically twenty four seven so instead the rights of the film. Take me from Ridley. Scott's producer. Bud York and broaden his own screenwriter to write narration. Help explain things and basically dumb it down because he didn't think audiences with get it's so Harrison Ford intentionally tanked the he tried to be as boring and stiff as possible But it didn't work because they ended up making it in the movie that made it to theaters in the movie ended up being kind of a bomb at first and yet a gets a new life. So how did blade runner get. Its Own Redo you know it was a film that really Scott. I think really cared about other people worked on it really cared about The Warner Brothers did a showing of a work print of the movie without the narration. And sort of getting people talking and then about ten years later There was a piece in the La Times were they ended up reaching now then helped spur more exciting movie. Directors cut came out without the narration. Eventually the on Blu Ray had the final cut which are released got came out. and Actually Warner Warner Brothers. Actually pay for extra special effects. Finish up never got done in the original no narration. And it's sort of created this thing that everybody is able to love without the bad parts so maybe blade runner wasn't quite right about androids. Maybe it wasn't quite right about flying cars but looking at it today. What do you think that got right about where we are today? I think they did capture the big city feel. That was going to calm. That wasn't quite there yet you know. They're looking at Asian influences. There's a lot of Japan influence it's in the original picture. you know one thing that I talked to some of the creators about that. They felt they really nailed. Was the difference between the sort of class warfare. Talking about like the Rich folks in this world had left the planets and left behind Poor people behind them and so there was love Considering that you know we have still Some some of these issues that we're facing also some of acknowledges still close I talked with Sid Mead About the androids and he was saying he really thinks that we're in maybe ten years. We're going to have androids like they had them blade runner You know he is giving examples of various robots that are already out there these robots join. Exactly look anthropomorphic. But they can. They can jump over a one meter high barrier in motion land and actually do backflips So you never know we might be right around the corner. And you don't know I could be an Android android doing this interview. I assume you are

Pilot Calls Tower and Receives Instructions That Are All Greek to Him

"Again true pilots stories from the world of generally in this this episode a one seventy two pilot calls tower and receives an instruction. That's completely Greek to him. Of course he is flying in in Greece. This could be interesting. Bring Your Greek dictionary and ride along in say again by Carl Doorman as I entered the down wind leg of the Corfu Greece airport I contacted tower and I did not understand understand a word they said now what to do. It was nineteen eighty four and I was flying from Rhode Island to Israel in one thousand nine hundred sixty exte- Cessna one seventy two with my flight student Aria Rona the trip recently brought us through the beautiful Rhone Valley in France over the Mediterranean NC for three hundred and twenty five nautical miles in instrument conditions and route to Ciampino International Rome's secondary airport as we checked in with Roma approach at nine thousand feet requesting vectors to final at Ciampino. We could hear that the controllers were quite busy we we were assigned to holding pattern at nine thousand feet northeast over the Roma. VR which is adjacent to the Ciampino airport we were preparing to land on runway one four as advised by the Avis. So who do you think were the best air traffic controllers on the entire trip. I can tell you without hesitation. It was the Italians the controllers stepped us down a thousand feet at a time from holding pattern to holding pattern I two eight thousand feet then to seven thousand feet all the way down to one thousand feet and then vectored us to the final approach to runway one four for these controllers were so smooth and so professional as the handled us with kid gloves we switched over to one to zero point five Ciampino Tower and we're cleared to land and then guided to the runway exit where we switched to ground control and taxi to the F. B. over parking we stayed in Rome for two days to see some of the famous historical sites now it was Sunday we were ready to continue our trip the next destination Brindisi on the east coast of Italy just two hundred sixty nautical miles to the southeast we noticed that there was very little air air traffic along the way and at the airport after landing we'd taxi to the FBI to get fuel and we're surprised to find everything was closed at the Brindisi airport. We had forgotten it was Sunday. It did not occur to us that some places at the airport might be closed. We were lucky enough to meet some pilots from the local Brindisi Flying Club. WHO said they could help us? After we told them our plight their club did not usually sell fuel to pilots not members of the club but they graciously made an exception. Thank you Brindisi Flying Club. We then departed from Brindisi to the east one hundred ten nautical miles across another part of the Mediterranean Sea to Corfu an island in Greece also known as Kirk era after listening to the Kirk Avis and contacting Kirk your approach. We were advised to change to frequency one to zero point eight five and contact. Kirk here a tower. We checked in with tower on the downwind leg of runway three five asking for permission to land. I heard a clear response. That sounded to me. Something like Gorky. Mom Bit Blit Loiter. I asked the controller say again his reply. I again sounded similar to Gorky Moment Lipton. Loiter had absolutely no idea what this controller was saying to me. I thought it would be best just to broadcast my intentions and slow and clear English and proceed to runway three five which was a comforting seven thousand seven hundred hundred ninety two feet long as I continue down wind opposite might touchdown point. I again broadcast my intentions receiving again a similar undecipherable reply from the tower. I still understood nothing. I repeated my intentions again. Dan as I turned final received the same response and I landed after taxiing departing. I decided it would be a good idea to visit the tower her see the controller and find out what he said upon entering the tower as the controller began speaking to me here was the same sounding founding voice but now that I could see his lips moving. I had no problem understanding him. I discovered he understood me just fine and that he was telling telling me proceed as requested so much for English being the International Universal Aviation Language Eleven learned not understanding the tower controller is just as bad as lost come stay focused become all fly the airplane and continue your approach broadcasting your intention slowly in clear English look for any light signals from the tower our if no signals land and clear the runway as soon as possible

Do Footballs Fly Farther in Denver?

"Imagine a fine afternoon in Denver the mile high city behind quarterback Peyton Manning's explosive offensive. The Denver Broncos have amassed attended to record today. They're hosting the Tennessee titans squad. That's lost three of its past four games. The titans. Have put up a good fight over the first half hour of game. Play three seconds before. Halftime. The score is Tennessee Twenty-one Denver seventeen. And her Broncos kicker. Matt Prater trotting out to the Denver forty six yard line. He readies himself for the play of his life. A mighty kick. Sends the ball soaring end over end across the field as a nervous crowd holds its breath. And then the place erupts with ease the ball sails through the yellow crossbar in Tennessee's endzone. It's a longest completed field goal in NFL history. A perfectly made sixty four yard drill. A for metric friends. That's about fifty eight meters perhaps emboldened by prayers heroics. The Broncos go on to crush the titans of the second half, thus clinching a playoff berth. The game. I just described took place on December eighth twenty thirteen today. Prater sixty four yards still holds the all-time distance record. Although his accomplishment has never been bested. Jaw-dropping football kicks are nothing. New in the rocky mountains. Three of the five longest field goals that the NFL has ever seen were made in Denver's mile high stadium. Broncos great Jason Elam nailed a sixty three yarder there in one thousand nine hundred eight a feat that was matched by Sebastian Janikowski when his Oakland Raiders came to town thirteen years later, but to hear some sports fans tell it those three kicks should have Asterix attached the official elevation of Colorado's capital is exactly one mile. That's one thousand six hundred nine meters above sea level. No other NFL cities. It's anywhere close to that. Altitude of the runner up is Glendale Arizona, which is just one thousand feet or three hundred meters. Above sea level Denver's elevation does affect the sporting events up there when football's kicked Broncos home game. It's apt to cover more distance than it would in lower elev-. Nations. And this doesn't just affect three point field goals. Kickoffs tend to go farther as well. There's a book called football physics. The science of the game by one university of Nebraska, professor Timothy gay for it. He ran the numbers on eight different teams from cities that sit more or less at sea level like the Miami Dolphins and the New England Patriots that played at least one road game in Denver during the two thousand one or two thousand two seasons. He found that in those two years the visiting kickers from low elevation towns. Enjoyed some great numbers when they went to Denver up in Colorado. There kickoffs traveled seventy point one yards. That's sixty four meters on average back in their respective home fields. The average kickoff distance dropped by seven point three yards. That's six point six meters to understand those numbers will need to talk about air density pretend as I'm sure you want to that you have a jet pack, if you were to take off at sea level and travel through earth's atmosphere in a straight line up the density of the air around you would get lower as your altitude. Creased? This is due to a universal law as the distance between two objects grows the gravitational pull they exert on each other lessons and air molecules are not exempt the pole of earth's gravity is more strongly felt by molecules that are closer to the planet's center at or below sea level, gravitational attraction pacts the molecules tightly together and the weight of the molecules sitting higher up in the atmosphere really bears down on the ones occupying low elevations in consequence the air, it self grows, denser, the closer you get to the surface way up in the mile high city, the Air's only about eighty two percent as dense as it is at sea level a ball kicked skyward in Denver will therefore encounter fewer air molecules than it would in Miami. That's important to note because air molecules create drag drag is a force that pushes against solid bodies as they travel through fluids or gases, a punted or kicked football will run headlong into a steady barrage of air molecules their combined drag will slow it down sometimes dramatic. Early. But remember in ludens, the air molecules are fewer and farther between therefore football's can and often do encounter less drag in Denver Denver's altitude impacts baseball as well. A physicist and Red Sox fan. Alan Nathan reports that fly balls at chorus field. Go proximity five percent farther than they do at Fenway park in Boston yet kicking on the Broncos home turf won't guarantee success for kickers or punters altitude reduces air density, and by extension drag but cold weather increases it and boy can Colorado get chilly. A twenty eleven survey of NFL statistical records found that in outdoor games. Played at temperatures of thirty nine degrees Fahrenheit, that's four degrees celsius or lower field goal. Accuracy drops by one point seven percent while the average partly is about one yard shorter than normal. These findings hold true throughout the league. So it's to Matt Prater credit that his record-breaking field goals split the uprights from sixty four yards out. Even though Denver. It's temperature had fallen. Just fourteen degrees Fahrenheit that's negative ten celsius at the time. Whatever the weather kicking specialists need to be on guard against complacency Denver's reputation as the mecca of ultra-long field goals is well established across the league. According to players that mile high mystique can trick visiting kickers into overestimating their abilities. We could say that when in doubt always air on the side of
