93: Find What Tickles the Soul - burst 03

"I think a lot of I think a lot of the, you know, at a certain point, I think we reach a place where, you know, listen, I don't need any more character. Life can take it easy on me now. And so I think I had a lot of the grit again just rural Tennessee and especially rural Tennessee where I was, I mean, I wasn't in the absolute deep, deep, deep, deep, deep Woods, but in the 70s and Tennessee where I was out by Hendersonville and gallatin, not like it is today. There was not a whole lot around. So I had quite a bit of what we would call character building and grid just growing up in a single parent home. By the time I got to Los Angeles, the LA part was just trying to build a career in an exceedingly difficult profession where I didn't have I didn't have any nepotism. I didn't have anything, I didn't show up here with anything on my side for lack of a better phrase. Yeah. Well, national was a totally different city back then in the 70s than it is now. I mean now it's the home and hard of a lot of productions, both movies and radio and television. That was not happening way back then in the same way. Now it's Nash Vegas. First of all, it's the number one bachelorette weekend destination in the south. It's number one, even more so than Atlanta. And number two, I mean, yeah, my mother was a country singer, but there's a very famous train station Alan in Nashville called union station that actually country songs have been written about it. It's beautiful. They refurbished it. When I was in high school, it was boarded up in dilapidated. So yeah, you didn't go past, you didn't go past 20th or 21st street towards first street to downtown. When I was a kid or you were looking for trouble and that would be just past Vanderbilt. So it's a very different city now, yes. Yeah. As I say right now, I mean to Nashville and there are many areas that you would stay out of. I mean, it's a totally grown up city and it's safe. It's prosperous. It's really become uptown. Whereas it used to be a hole to begin with. You are correct. There were distinctly places you did not go. That is correct. And now it is. It's just, it's just blown up in the last 15, 20 years. Unbelievable. Yeah. For sure. So do you remember any stories along the way that you can tell the audience? About that journey? Several of them depends on which ones we can allow on air. No, I think we, when we tend to use the word journey, doctor leica, we, a lot of times, as a country that we're very result oriented and I respectfully understand that certainly as an athlete, your result oriented, taking tests where result oriented, and so when we look at journeys, sometimes we wind up just looking at the end of like, oh my gosh, that person is so and so they've gotten to it doesn't matter what industry it is. And so when I tend to look at some of those years, I tend to look back at some of the moments when I should have looked at myself and gone, what the hell are you doing? And one of the key ones for me would have been what I chose to go to Atlanta for two years. I won an event in New York. And I could have gone to New York, but similarly, New York back then, Manhattan back then is not the Manhattan you see today. I mean, people who have not seen Times Square from a perspective of the early 80s to where it is today, Times Square was a place after one or 2 o'clock in the morning, you would just get killed. And so I had been there and for this event and as a guy who grew up in the rural south and who also was a golfer, I didn't really see myself hanging out in Manhattan trying to haul my sticks on the subway somewhere to go play golf. So I chose Atlanta, but I also went to Atlanta with a very old car, $200 in my pocket, and the only person that knew I was coming was the gal who was to be my agent. So I had to I slept in my car for three days in this abandoned Sears parking lot. That is in really upscale Buckhead at the time. It was just this big abandoned building. And it was kind of downhill and there was behind the building thing and I thought, oh, that seems safe. And I literally slept in my car for three days, and then my agent had a client that was in the catering business. And she had a couple of kids that they had moved out. She was an empty nester. And she was kind of a whack a doodle. She might have been kind of a functioning alcoholic. She was funny. And she didn't live that far down peachtree. And I rented a room from her for $50 a week. For about 6 or 7 months and then one of her neighbors was a lawyer and he knew somebody who worked at this really fancy restaurant downtown and he helped get me a job. And once I had a job for 6 or 7 months, I had enough money to finally move out and get my own place. So that's the beginning of a journey right there. That is the beginning of a journey and how did you get motivated? A lot of things were stacked against you. You know, a lot of things, you know how many actors try and never meet their dreams. How did you stay motivated during that process? You know, that becomes the intriguing part about that question for me, which ironically, I've asked a number of people on my own myself. Is we get into the we go the direction in my opinion of nature versus nurture. And I'm someone who believes, I don't think that it's 50 50 personally as a guy who was almost a psychology double major. I do believe we're a little more nurture than we are in nature personally. I think our environment of how we grow up has a little bit longer lasting effect on us and maybe the nature part of us remains a little more a little more hidden, but not always. I think that the way I grew up with just a sister and a mother who was not home very much and was sort of a latchkey kid who learned a lot on his own and had to grow up pretty fast. I think there was just a nurtured part of me that quitting wasn't really in my vocabulary. I don't know if you want to put words to something like that such as stubborn or cocky or defiant or I don't know. It doesn't much really matter. Even just going to the event that I went to in New York that I won, we didn't have any money for me to go to that. I literally had to go around and raise the money to be able to even go on that trip and when I wanted and that's a trophy that sits right

Pandemic Relief Money Is Bringing Internet Access to 'Internet Deserts'

"We've been talking for more than a year now about how the internet is everything and there are still places in the. Us where they're basically is none like allendale south carolina town of around three thousand people not far from the georgia. Border officials called it an internet desert but the state got fifty million dollars in cares. Act money for broadband expansion. And use some of it to install a wireless network in allendale that runs at broadband speeds. It's operated by a local. Isp and free to residents through the end of october jim scherzinger south carolina's broadband coordinator. He says the state went with wireless over fibre broadband because it's fast to deploy. They went from nothing to offering service in sixty one days. We've tested as high as seventy eight six so by that. I mean seventy eight. Meg download speed six meg. Upload speed which is over twice the federal standard of twenty five three and in the state of south carolina. We've kind of adopted this wireless bridge to a wired future theory and we're keenly aware that there's so many six year olds out there that don't have internet at home and we want them to have something quickly. But we also don't want fixed wireless to prevent a home from getting fiber to the home in the future so we think it's really kind of a one two punch where you get wireless deployed fast and then you come back and you backfill with Fiber to them. Do you see that same. Isp infrastructure work. Do you hope to attract other. Isp's by saying hey there's demand and real need in this area. While i think it's interesting because when you think about an internet desert A place where internet's never been before. I really learned a lesson going out to this Area and working so much because there are no ring video doorbells. There's no smart homes. There's no netflix. Being streamed on family homes. There's a real need to lift up these families and help them Advance their capabilities at home. So when you think about that. There's a need first to connect the family lift up their capabilities and then longer term their demands for bandwith increase. Because they start doing more sophisticated things but the most important thing is to get them connected fast and It won't shock you that if you can see there's adoption of internet down a street for example if you get twenty people signing up for wireless Service down one street. That's great insight for the fiber provider to come in after the fact and build fiber to the

Golden State Warriors star Steph Curry set the NBA record as the oldest player in league history to score at least 30 points in 11 consecutive games. The Oakland A's who lost their first six games of the baseball season, carried a 10 game win streak in last night's contest against Minnesota. One Street continued, but another came to an end Steph Curry, who had scored 96 combined points over his previous two games. And who would hit for 42 arm or in five of his last 10 games, finally went flat curry not spicy against the Wizards. He made only two of 14 shots from three point range scored. 18 points total first time in 12 games. Steph Curry did not reach 30 points. Times Square, NYC Then And Now

"If you haven't been. I will make sure that you feel like you have. I hope that you enjoy this episode. You know new york city is fantastic. And i love it a matter of fact i have been there many times and i used to live there as i will tell you in this episode but i also want to tell you that it was in the late seventies and eighties entered the nineties. That new york city star to lose its attraction. It started to lose the people that came to visit and it star to be a real dumpster. People didn't want to visit new york anymore and so it was the governor's the mayor's and police commissioners started to take back new york city rebuild new york city one step at a time starting with times square in nineteen eighty eight is to murray hill in new york city. I lived in a three story. Walk up but first and second avenue on thirty first street not exactly prime real estate but safe enough. It was near the united nations and right above the entrance to the queens midtown tunnel Now you know if you are a new yorker or visited new york you know exactly where i lived then a couple of years later i found myself living in the salvation army apartment building for women. It was ideal. It served two meals a day and it was right across the street from the much coveted. Grammercy park the oh so glamorous and it was a close walk to eighteenth street between fifth and sixth avenues where i worked. I thought it was a dream. Come true and it was. I never really ventured to the west side past sixth avenue or anywhere near times square. Well that's what we're talking about. Today is times square and new york city. Everything i needed was right around where i lived but times square was unmistakably a major part of the city no doubt a black guy on the city a disappointment to the twelve hours of manhattan and somewhere that was to be avoided if wanted to dodge trouble darkness dealings and drugs. If you have seen the two thousand and nineteen movie joker with walking phoenix. Ps and by the way. I suggest that you might have an idea of the area and new york city. That was the cd and trashy times square. The closest thing. I can compare it to is a scenes in the movie joker to find a seedier place was difficult when they were filming. The movie and times square didn't look like does today so in the two thousand nineteen movie joker with no cd place to replicate times square. Really the producers of the movie had to go to newark new jersey a real old fashioned pit hole. If ever there was one to newark that was of the same timeframe as the movie never fixed up and never given a real chance to survive and today's society. It's a real shame but it depicts it perfectly times square where beauty came to die. No kidding in nineteen eighty six. When i was there there were multiple pornographic theaters and times square. The motion picture association of america introduced its rating system that included an x rating dip became associated with pornography. And so all the movies that were in times square were x. rated or the dreaded triple x. and everything was pornography back then pornography and. I should say drugs. The times square as a porn capital error was part of new york city's in the seventies and eighties amid its fiscal crisis. And later the crack cocaine epidemic which was rampant and it wasn't until the mid nineteen eighties that there was a push to clean up times square and new york city

Los Angeles Controller Says Cost to Build Prop. HHH Housing Needs to be Lowered

"Now under construction in the North Valley 49 apartments for the homeless built at a whopping $739,000, a unit. That's way more than it cost to build some luxury condos in the area that is completely unacceptable. And there are many ways in which you can build faster and cheaper. L. A city controller Ron Galperin is about to release this audit looking at the $1.2 billion of prop hhh money. That voters overwhelmingly approved in 2016. That money was meant to develop up to 10,000 units of housing for LA's homeless, But four years later, only 228 units have been built like this apartment complex near the 101 Freeway. We have a crisis on our streets Last year, we had 1000 people who died on our streets. So this is a question of life and death. The biggest shocker and Galperin's on it is the high cost of housing. "I mean you know I can be I might might tell will not stop it that's always going nice that that was his first hit song and and I wanted to share a little bit of what I learned about that that's all right because it's I think it's a really cool story for for someone like me to who didn't know a lot about this great album but I love these backstories too so Maybelline it goes it goes back to the point and took his life when his career was just starting to take off the from what I read about it it was a he was in his late twenties it was the summer of nineteen fifty five and that he'd been playing blues clubs in Saint Louis so that's where he's from St Louis and but he wasn't well known nationally at this point in his life and that was about to change because and it changed here in Chicago that's where he got his big break it thanks in part to Muddy Waters and that's what this is where they met they met here in Chicago Chuck Berry drove up to see about a show he was a fan of Muddy Waters and Chuck Berry says in his words he walked up to Muddy Waters after this show that he'd just seen and asked for his autograph and he told them that he played guitar too and that he asked him how he could get a record deal like like he had and yet you know his Chuck Berry asking Muddy Waters for advice I love that story and that in there do you know they're just the both icons but and we just covered in muddy water yeah yeah anthology number thirty eight on the cell rolling stone magazine's top one hundred greatest albums of all time but according to Chuck Berry what is what waters told them he he said that he should hook up with Leonard chess at Chess Records that's on its on twenty First Street now here in Chicago I read I read somewhere that it was on forty seventh so I don't know if it moved but anyway I I don't know if there's a tie. chess was on south Michigan yeah south Michigan right exactly but but one of the stories I read said it was on forty sevens and and miss again but I know now it's on twenty first so I'm actually I put a call into to chess records you can actually still take a tour yeah yeah you can see you can be inside the studio so I put a call into them to find out where this was actually recorded was and I'm forty seven the twenty first but anyway eventually. you know you know he went there and met Leonard chess and eventually they recorded what later become my very first hit that we just heard Maybelline yeah so check but check very road each of these twenty eight songs on this album he wrote every single one of them and obviously some fantastic guitar licks on this album if your guitar fan you've heard it I'm sure but but if you haven't this is a great album for guitar good time to played other cut here this one's from track six case in point roll over Beethoven Tom. yeah Beethoven I knew that song a lot of the songs on on this album kind of there but they're basically kind of about guitars fast cars and chasing girls that's all yeah absolutely yeah and going back to all the way when he was in high school you could tell from the perspective of some of the songs when he was in high school writing about chasing girls racing cars and so it's a fun album in in nearly half of these songs reached either top ten or top forty on either of the Billboard RB singles chart or it's one hundred hot one hundred so a lot of hits on this album it's about an hour and nine minutes long but this is not really rock and roll his lyrics are great to have though I thought I read that that his ability to write great lyrics kind of gets overlooked at times I guess because maybe of the of the of the guitar you know the way he played guitar but on but I think of this cut were about to place a good example of some of Chuck berry's writing skills C. M. even I do this one that track eight school day ring ring goes to bill Tom..

"Twenty twenty eight Olympics is now six point eight eight billion dollars smart enough people who are going to adjust for inflation today. They should have done it six months ago. When we first saw Shannon, weekdays at ten AM. Joe? We about two breaking stories we're following. A man was shot. And wounded sitting in part car in chino. Police are actively searching for two male suspects who were seen running away from the scene. And so, we're we'll following that plus a fire burning at a metal yard that's still going on near downtown. It sends smoke into the air. Officials advised the stay indoors and avoid getting it stuff in your lungs. The location is at sixteen eighty five east forty first street Long Beach boulevard. And then a small plane crash. Fort well, shouldn't say crash forced to make an emergency landing. I think it did. I think it was a hard landing, aka crash. I'm not not in the traditional sense, because I don't think there was even a fire right? The following those that fire still going on in downtown LA. I'm double check. And right now a scrap metal yard downtown LA. No injuries, reported does not low. Yeah. No, it's knocked down. Okay. It's knocked out now. Here's another story. And this is something that I think George Noory is going to hit on tonight. Ooh. It's coming out of Kansas City, and it's to the point where the national weather service, Kansas City, tweeted out, and we've retweeted it at Conway show on Twitter. I will read you exactly what the national weather service tweeted out. I we honestly have no explanation for the floating objects over Kansas City really over Kansas City over kids, the city, we've retweeted also a couple of pictures of those floating objects above Kansas City. And it's is it cool. Well, no, they're, they're small enough in their high up enough. You can't really make out what they are. But the national weather service has no idea. And it's really odd. I don't see anything floating over Kansas City on do a YouTube. Yeah. No. Not yet, I wanted on YouTube if you need it on YouTube Google. Let me see if I can Google it here. Kansas City floating, not floating walkway just floating. Oh, I see it here. Go. Kids city floating on, on a Google search. Yeah. To mysterious to mysterious or. Spotted in Kansas City, sky, numerous calls to KM BC's, if you click on that, and you'll you'll get that picture, and it's really odd. I don't know what they are. And they're just stationary. They don't move right? Yeah. Means to them sometimes but Kansas City to mysterious orbs or spotted in Kansas City's northern sky are prompting numerous calls to Thurs to NB KM BC to the point. Like I said that the national weather service, they were also getting a lot of calls because they had they tweeted out. Hey, we have no idea what they are. And by the way, for people to think that K M B C is the NBC affiliate in Kansas City. It'd be wrong. That's ABC NBC is KABC. They got crazy there. Maybe they'll come up with a hallmark card for this. Right. Isn't that the headquarters of? Homework, Kansas City, I believe it is. I heard that, that eighty five percent of the people who live in Kansas City, either have a family member or know somebody that works for homework, wouldn't doubt. It isn't that crazy. Isn't that a crazy number? Yeah. Eighty five percent of people either know somebody or have somebody in their family work for hallmark. Is that crazy Monday? That, that's a huge number right? Crazy. Yeah. Okay. Are you kidding me? Make sure he's alive in there. It's a number that I can't even get my head around. What was the podcast that he's going to be doing for the summer? Oh, what are you doing for the summer surviving? Cast. I don't remember a couple of weeks ago he asked him what he's going to do this, every all fighting for my life. Yeah. Just fighting to stay alive. No. Oh my God. I'm sorry. That was the, the fighting for my life copy of Dr. You spill it everywhere. I seriously thought that was a live body. No, it's you know what? It's attention went a little bit to Mondo and she flipped out. I fighting for. Everything starts falling because I couldn't believe that was a real statement. Yeah. He really is fighting for his life. He's going to the hospital in July, right? Yeah. Wow. Man. Oh man. Next month. And we've talked about it on the air already, and it's all still the same plan. Mondo. Yes. Everything's the same pretty much. I find out a specific date on July. First. Can we visit you? Yeah, sure you have remote. Oh, that'd be great holiday should. Yeah. Because you're a you know, if you're not in a private room, your, your partner would love that. And you can pick all the bumpers. They'll be heart-related. Are you in? A private room. Not sure yet find out July first. Oh boy, that's a big difference. Huge. You know, especially if the guy is talker, or as a woman, a woman with you. Right. I don't know. But if they put a guy in there is old timer and he's got a bunch of stories about our remember where you lavallee wasn't even around a pops. Please. I'm just trying to survive here. All right. We're all both trying to survive. And you make it more difficult. When you tell me about stories about the valley when you were kid. All right. Can help out on this. Right. Good word. Yes. Although I don't think he has any privileges. At Dr Ray, he's got privileges everywhere. Maybe that maybe that's true. We don't say the hospital you're in because people combined and tease you, right? Yeah. Because you'll be in that blue gown. But yeah, at the end of next month of its. We, we say it right? Well, I don't know. I don't know what we can say or not.
