"And it's just a brilliant show that that's a brilliant insight. And you're going to achieve what my kids have not. Now I'm going to watch Curb Your Enthusiasm as soon as I'm done with dairy girls. But let me go and finish by going back in the soul of civility to the essential distinction between politeness and civility, which you explain by virtue of reference to their Latin roots, as well as to the Latin root of respect. I took five years of Latin, so I was very interested in this. Would you explain to people the difference between politeness and civility, which takes a few pages to get. But it's crucial. It's about the internal development, what repetition does for the soul, actually, what manners are intended to introduce you to. We hear this where we hear these words, politeness and civility used interchangeably. People either want more of them to revive and heal our public discourse today and they harken back to the golden age or they want less of them. They claim that civility and politeness are tools of the patriarchy, of white supremacists, of people in positions of power to silence and oppress and keep the powerless powerless. I argue that both these contingents misunderstand what civility and politeness are. Politeness is manners. It's etiquette. It's technique. It's behavior. It's external. Where civility is internal, it's a disposition of the heart. It's a way of seeing others as our moral equals who are worthy of a bare minimum of respect just by virtue of our shared moral status as members of the human community. And that crucially, sometimes actually respecting others requires being impolite, telling hard truths, engaging in robust debate. The Latin roots of these two words support this distinction. And again, we've been making, we've been conflating these two words for a very long time. The very first English dictionary given to us by Samuel Johnson in 1755 defines civility in terms of politeness, politeness in terms of civility, and we've been doing it wrong ever since. So, but the etymology supports this distinction that the etymology of politeness is poliare, which means to smooth or to polish, and that's what politeness does. It papers over difference, polishes over it, focuses on the outside, the external, as opposed to giving us the tools to grapple with difference head on. The etymology of civility is kivitas, which is the root of all things related to citizen, citizenship, the city, and civilization itself. And that's what civility is. It's the disposition and the habits of a citizen in the city that again, crucially, sometimes requires breaking rules of propriety and etiquette in order to have a robust debate, in order to flourish across deep difference, in order to confront a regime with injustice. I reclaimed the whole tradition of civil disobedience within my definition of civility. So unlike, you know, many claim that civility is this tool of, you know, keeping the powerless powerless. And I argue that instead, civility, the basic respect that we are owed to others by virtue of our shared humanity and the duties of citizenship can and can, has been and can once again be this essential tool of promoting justice and equality in our world. Do you believe, Alexandra, that repetition of politeness will lead to civility? Because I think that's what the education, if you read Montaigne, essay 26 in the first book, The Education of Children, it's all about disciplining children early so that they learn how to be actually civilized. But it's, you can't civilize a child. You can only train a child, but it's important to do that. Do you agree with that? That it's, you've got to start with politeness. You can't get there to civility without politeness? I do agree with that. So at its best, politeness will perfect and enhance the inner disposition of civility, the rituals, the practices, the behavior of sacrificing self for others for the sake of the joint project of living well with others. But too often, we are content with mere politeness. We're content with just the gesture, just the behavior. And we insufficiently seek to cultivate and nurture the inner disposition of actually respecting others. And so my argument is let's not settle for just the going through the motions and faux respect that is focused on just empty gestures. And that let's instead focus on cultivating, especially in children, the inner disposition of civility and said, this is what I talk about great hearts, that they focus on not just the behavior, but how the behavior cultivates character. And that the outer actions will ideally flow from an inner character. And yet often, especially in children, practicing the behaviors first can enhance that process of character formation, of sacrifice for self. I just double checked the index because I wanted to make sure I was clear. I don't think you referred to Elizabeth II or Diana, Princess of Wales in the book. And so my two questions to close are about that, that I don't think are in the soul of civility because I like to get an author out of their book for a second. I have often quoted or at least attributed to Elizabeth the saying, the essence of good taste is never to be offended by bad taste. Question number one, is that about politeness or is that about civility? That's a great question. I think that that's helpful to help us remember not to be focused, inordinately focused on appearances, to actually look to the heart of others. The book of Samuel in the Hebrew Bible says, man looks at the outward appearance, the Lord looks at the heart. And we can never truly know what another person is on the inside. We can only go by what is on how people act and what people say and do. And ultimately we can't control others. We can only control ourselves. So I think that that quote is a very stoical idea. And stoicism is analogous to my theory of social change in the book that we can't change others. We can't control who's tweeting what, what person's running for president and what's happening across the world. But we can control ourselves. And we can make our society better and brighter by just breathing beauty and life wherever wherever we go. So I do like that insight. Well, as I was reading Soul of Civility, we finished watching the first series of episodes of the last season of The Crown. Are you a crown watcher and are you caught up? I'm not a crown watcher and I'm not cut up. I would like to be. I feel like I feel like it would ennoble me. It's just it's just, you know, beautifully visually, visually beautiful. What it will do is remind you of everything you write about in the Soul of Civility, because there are bad people and good people and there are people being good and bad differences here. All of us are good and bad at different times, caught up in the drama, which is a drama. It's not it's not nonfiction. It's a dramatization. But it is it is that tension with civility and politeness. It's ever present in the show. And once you've read the Soul of Civility, it kind of puts glasses on lenses on how you view people's behavior. So I really want to conclude by saying I am very impressed, Alexandra. And by your stoicism of putting a book out in the middle of a news title wave, push on because I think it will get picked up. "I know that the talking point has been Kauai and I think that I saw Ty Lue say the Kauai is going to get some minutes on Luca. I think I am actually put George on him because I think George fights through screens better than Kauai does. Like he gets really skinny kind of going over the top of those screens and with both Ibaka and Zoo, Bots, likely plane If not flat, almost certainly dropped most of the time, I think that that's more important when it comes to defending Luca. Yeah, I think I'm with you on the Paul George thing off. And also, I like his rearview. Contests are pretty good. There's a lot of reasons that Paul George might be the choice. I also just think that you're going to have to get somebody a little bit quicker. Instead of trying to walk, you know, use Kauai strength, maybe you need to use Paul George's agility. Yeah, because Luca is too strong. This is, this is the story of the series. I think, how are you sure to get someone who's strong enough to guard? Luca, that can also stay in front of him that stuff. So with the Mavs, we have a team, who knows what their playoff identity is, right? Like they're dead. Yes! Give the ball and Luka and hope we make shots, which they did in game one. I mean, they hit forty seven. Per-cent of their threes in game. One unlikely to happen again, right? Like I don't think they're going to shoot that well regular in one of the worst Thursday. Yep. You know he has not been an attack mode at all. He's not driving with to his right. So it seems to me like he's having trouble putting that off that Force going kind of outside to turn the corner on that, right? Ankle and even his attack mode and the playing game against golden state was making pass. Is and like just operating. Yeah, like like operating or the end of the game, right? Again, it's just not going to happen but there I mean him not being able to defend at the level that we're used to as a problem, but it's just not getting anything going offensively for them either. He's settling for this contested, Bata weighs and things of that nature. The three-ball is not a concern for opposing defenses because he's just not a great three months. Shooter when doing in the bubble, in the offensive problem is significant for the Lakers because it means that they have to have data schruder on the floor. I've been kind of saying the last few weeks that the thing that worries me about Utah is a lack of footscray defensively and scramble situations and I thought that ja Morant did a really good job of taking advantage of that and game one. I thought that Memphis in general did a really good job of taking advantage of that in game one, I also think that that's a totally different Utah. Team with Donovan Mitchell back Donovan Mitchell is going to play in game two from all reports, we had a big write-up on it at the athletic today with Tony Jones and say I'm a is a great job, kind of explaining the mounting frustration between those two sides.

"Other thing that Milwaukee did really, really well, and I don't want it to go down, Missing game too, was they really did a good job of chasing Duncan Robinson off of the three-point line and he played not very well. The Bucks are a more dangerous better team this year, despite the fact that they've won a fewer percentage or a lower percentage of their games this year, they're a very dangerous team and I think that look I still think I would take Brooklyn to be just because I think Brooklyn is ridiculous, but that doesn't have anything to do with the box that has to do. With fact, I think, Brooklyn is great. And by the way, I'm sure we'll talk about this at some point Milwaukee is a really interesting matchup on them. These years You're serious. I don't think we're going to spend a lot of time on the point where I knew that Brooklyn was going to absolutely demolish. Boston was when Boston I think was like seven or fourteen from 3 and Kevin Durant, Kyrie Irving and James Harden were like eight of 35 from the field in game 1. In the first half in Brooklyn was only down for like it was just like, okay I'm going to switch and it's going to change and Brooklyn is going to take over there, getting better shots just Boston and shooting threes at a higher clip right now. And the three-point line can be the great equalizer off. This is this is not a competitive series to me. No, no. And it wasn't going to be as soon as Jaylen Brown was out like the Boston didn't have a chance and it's a bummer. But there are other reasons besides just Jaylen Brown when you got three guys like like Brooklyn has there not a lot of teams that are going to be able to beat you. Yeah. Playing a simple and Boston doesn't have the talent Club. Brooklyn is interested, the first half of that game? I would say they were disconnected. It felt like a lot of my turn. Your turn stuff. Yeah. Clearly, they sorted it out at halftime because they came out and immediately, everything got better. Kyrie Kyrie, got it, going in the third and those guys rolled from there on out, I thought Katie was his postgame comments. I thought he nailed it. He was like, look, we were all dead. All rental hot pressing a little bit and once we figured out, just go, relax and play our game. Everything was fine, and it's funny because that's the same cliche, stuff that that players. Same thing all the time, the difference was how he said it and he was like, we knew we were freaking out then we relaxed and everything was fine. And you saw that in the second half. They they relaxed. And they I mean they just stomped them. Yeah, I was really just kind of ridiculous. "I just don't think they're going to get you know as long as beat up by Trae young and game too. But if the Hawks game to they're going to win the serious that's it like it's a must-win for the next. They don't have the talent to climb out of that hole and I thought this series was closed anyway but that the Hawks had a built-in extra gear that I wasn't sure if they'd hit or not and I still don't know if they're going to hit it. I think traded in game one though, they're really talented. I think the Box are really good. I think they're really we haven't seen like a totally healthy Hawk seemed like for a while. It feels like DeAndre Hunters back. DeAndre Hunters back. I'll be interested to see if they can get a little bit off. From him offensively like his. If they play as been good, though? His defense was really good cuz he's one of the few guys that can really match up with Julius Randle. If they play a flatter a defensive coverage against Atlanta DMV will become more important because they probably will need him to create a little bit more out of isolation as a score of some of the skills that we saw early in the season from DeAndre but I don't know like I'm pretty in on Thursday at this point. I think that it's going to be a tough series. I think it's probably going to go six or seven games. I think I would take Atlanta them stealing home-court from the Knicks is really important. It hits a three, is that kind of stuff that Atlanta hasn't had out of that spot for a large portion of the Year and that is a big difference maker for them in the playoffs. Yeah. Have they have shooting at 4 positions now? Yep, which is like they actually do need someone like Alec Burks, they need someone like Derek Rose, who I thought was pretty good in that first game because this is not a great series for Julius Randle. I don't think like he'll get his points, he'll get his rebounds like he will wage. Produce in some way. But I'm not totally convinced that he's going to do it like wildly efficiently and then RJ Barrett, like as much as RJ really improved throughout the year, I think it's going to be interesting to see how his brand of driving basketball, even with the Improvement shooting late in the year kind of translates..

"I don't know that you can play Drop exclusively in the office. But especially not against Rey Young. Then it was funny. I was talking to and NBA executive who feels like Atlanta has a real shot to give Philadelphia said. It's if Atlanta can get through New York because of that, like ability to play driving her ability to defeat the drop more than anything. I really love the way the trade played. I think home Going to be an absolute stud in the playoffs. I don't think this was a one-game flash in the pan. I saw some very smart people who had some real questions about the way that he would match up in terms of physicality off. I get that put the way that he draws fouls. He doesn't just draw, like ticky-tack ones. And, I mean, I guess you could say that their ticky-tack because of the way that he goes about drawing them, but they're not actually ticky-tack because he's really good at drawing. A lot of contact and the fowls that he gets tend to be very obvious. So I thought that that would translate his live double play making like the two biggest things that are important, come playoff, time are three level scoring, the ability to get your bucket at The Rim from the mid-range, and from Beyond The Arc and live durable, passing the ability to make quick processing, reads across the court from any position and he does both of those things. Like, I really think he's going to be dead. Exceptional playoff player and we've seen that so far, you know, the other thing about his foul drawing that doesn't get enough attention and this may even be the first time. I'm saying it out loud on a podcast but he's not a guy that draws a lot of the reaching fouls. He really does draw fouls with his body, like he draws but he gets guys to get their hips out to get their knees out. Like he is really good at just getting them out of their, their typical defensive stance trying to stay in front of him. And again, we're in about the passing. I mean the guy I thought that was his best skill coming into the league. That was his passing, you know, home and so it's a little bit different. I'm not going to say that I disagree with the people that are tired of seeing it though, but I'm tired of seeing it generally. That is the game. Now, like the game is, you are trying to sell phone calls and a lot of these are real fouls. I mean, we could go Spirit of the rule versus letter of the law on some of these but they're fouls and, you know, you have to know as a Defender going in this song. A guy who's really good at embellishing, I'm going to say tricking employees, what? He's really good at is constant. His deceleration is really good, right, he's really good at decelerating and forcing you to contract into him. He specifically trying to draw the foul but he's really good at trying to draw the foul. Yeah, I mean he's just he's he's a very good player and good players and especially when they're performing the way he did. I mean he had one of the best playoff debuts ever. Yep. The twenty-one pluses down to eight hundred and the s twenty one is down to seven hundred so cast one hundred two hundred one hundred dollars off respectively and i wanna get your sense of. Is that at the right price for these phones. What do you think about them overall. And where's your head out. Had at a month after their release. I think it's a better price for those phones. But it were kind of caught up in this commentary in this hype machine and i feel. We're quickly plateauing on this notion of the yearly. Refresh being aggressive and hype train. That's going to devalue way faster than your contract is going to be up so if you wait two months and you can afford to buy on locked. You're not going to be upside down on phone lease two months after you buy that phone so i i just feel like it's a moment it's a good time for us to just kind of look at our commentary you know we know that these deep depreciate we know that they devalue we know there are going to be sales and bogota's and trade ins but we only seem inclined to put the positive spin on a samsung product for having great trade deals and we don't recognize the rest of the landscape so fondly whenever we see those price flips.
