"one stories" Discussed on 77WABC Radio

"Hours. Been like so many rumors, you know, you hear one story from one person. The next was the helicopters and it was just really, really concerning, especially being home with the child. No one has notified us. Just a lot of wonder. Reports indicate the man was emotionally disturbed and threatening his mother, police were able to get the man's mother out of the house while he remained inside. No weapons were taken from the house. Tributes are pouring in tonight following the death of a longtime New York City official, former city council member and senator Bill Perkins has died at the age of 74. I just have so many fond memories of a person with dedicated his life on uplifting people and fighting for justice in a very balanced approach, and they were Adams as Perkins was a dear friend who he'll miss, adding the city lost a strong, committed fighter, governor hulko calling Perkins a fierce advocate for justice and the steadfast voice for his community. President Biden canceling his upcoming visits to Australia and New Guinea due to ongoing debt ceiling talks, however, Biden will head to Japan tomorrow to participate in the G 7 summit. Over the last 15 months, the G 7 has stood in solidarity with Ukraine following Russia's invasion, rallying the world to support Ukraine and cutting Putin off from the key technologies and financing around the globe. National Security Council spokesman John Kirby telling reporters Biden will move forward with the trip as planned. Meantime, House speaker Kevin McCarthy says there's still a lot of work to do as far as the debt ceiling is concerned. We only have

"Welcome back to the Charlie Kirk show. Fantastic to be with you. Yeah, we're honored to have you. One of the regulars on the Charlie Kirk show, you are you provide some of the best analysis that's why we keep having you back and revolver news is just getting stronger and better every single day. So congratulations on that. I want to talk about we ended the last hour, Darren talking about this newly released clip of Tucker Carlson, you know, behind the scenes, media matters for America gets the clip. And once again, it just seems to make him stronger, make him look more likeable, better. He's talking about he's talking about pronouns in your Twitter bio, which I think our audience based on the mountain of emails we just received literally hundreds of emails saying, yeah, we support Tucker. We love him even more now that we've seen this clip. You had a piece in revolver, CheckMate, Fox News, why Tucker Carlson is the perfect choice to host the GOP presidential debates. Now, this is the other storyline that is kind of circulating around. I think Washington Post broke the first story. And I think it's genius. You know, Charlie, turning point USA, they've had a great relationship with Fox News for many years. But this is a new era. Is it not Darren? What is happening? And why do you think this is CheckMate for Tucker Carlson? Well, it's a brilliant move along a number of different dimensions. I mean, there's so much going on here from the kind of particular aspect of Tucker Carlson versus Fox News. And then there's the most important element, which is sort of Americans being exposed to the kind of information they need in order to make informed decisions about critical issues. And so these two elements really converge in Tucker potentially hosting this debate with Fox. Now, I think this piece from revolver news, which is really gone white hot. It's amazing how a popular this piece is. I think because the idea itself is so perfect and really struck a nerve with people because it just ticks all the boxes that you would want.

Coinbase CEO Vows Fight Against 'Anti-Crypto' SEC

"Zach, you got the first story. What is it? I do. It's about coinbase. Coinbase beef went with the SEC. Remember that story? All right, Brian Armstrong, CEO of coinbase. Walks back a little bit of the, we're taking our ball and going home vibes. It had previously been channeled, but still poking some shots at SEC and chairman Gary gensler. Now the SEC still has to respond to the latest from coinbase as mandated by a judge, so we're waiting on that and you'll day now. But yeah, Brian Armstrong still, poking at the bear that is the SEC and Gary gensler, but also tone it down a little bit, so not full out war of words or leaving the U.S.. We'll see what happens. But I don't know. Suggest something about the whole story for sure. So I'm going to ask it to will, what do you think? I guess I'm a Brian Armstrong whisperer because I called this. I said his posturing last time, right? It totally was. There are all this was posturing. Coinbase has probably invested more in U.S. infrastructure, meaning licensing in the regime of the SEC and other regulators than any other crypto company out there. They're the first company to really go public for crypto, minus a bunch of other Bitcoin mining companies, which will kind of go off to the side. That was a monumental moment for crypto in April 2021 when coinbase did go public and they do have a lot of these other licenses, which coin desk has covered AD nauseum in a lot of different articles, talking about all the different licenses they need to be able to function as an exchange as a custodian as sort of a neo bank within the U.S., so they were not ever going to leave the U.S., but that doesn't mean they can't be opportunistic and set up like a side entity and move offshore. And that's what we're doing right now with this Bermuda thing, right? They're opening up this Bermuda derivatives exchange at the moment and they're going to be able to take in a lot of revenue that way and the sort of diversify themselves and also sort of take advantage of this regulatory arbitrage that we've seen binance do for quite some time. Coinbase has a shoot away from that for good reason, didn't really make sense at the time. They tried to stay in line and be good. The SEC seemed like it was playing ball, then they weren't all of a sudden, so coinbase had to pivot. And now they sort of have two business lines like they have a U.S. business line with coinbase, and they have this offshore Y, which you're going to build with derivatives. Both are going to be lucrative. So I'm not feeling bad for Brian right now.

Jeffrey Clark: Biden WH Used 'Special Access Program' to Raid Trump

"He's this guy Jeff Clark I want you to listen to this from the center for renewing America Describing exactly this We're not descending into third world tyrannical madness Check this out The first story we got was well this was authorized by Chris wray I found in August 9th story from last year saying Chris ray authorized it But then by the 11th we had a change in that story We had the attorney general indicating that he had authorized it but they tried to maintain the line that The White House had nothing to do with it Well what these foia documents show is that the Biden White House working with DoJ used a special access program under the presidential records regime This is in title 44 of the United States code to allow these documents to be looked at and studied by DoJ They should have gotten the separate subpoena for that but instead they use this special access program which the president can authorize But the point of the program is that it allows the president to look at past documents if he needs it to govern his own White House as the incumbent And there's no need for these documents And there was no showing that that occurred

Paxful's Bitcoin Peer-To-Peer Exchange Suspends Operations

"We're going to go to our first story for the day. Talking about paxil, which is this breaking news just found out in the last hour that packs full of society to shut down, temporarily. According to reuss of the cofounder and CEO of pax hole, they're going to temporarily suspend the marketplace. You are able to still claim your funds from the marketplace, but they've decided to winding down due to a lack of key staff members and regulatory uncertainty. This follows, of course, other changes closing your prior year in the wake of FTX and the continued pressure on peer to peer Bitcoin exchanges notably local bitcoins also shut down within the last 12 months. Christie, I feel like this is a story that really we should get some comments from you on. It does seem like it's harder and harder to run an exchange and a peer to peer manner that a lot of people would like to buy their bitcoins out. Yeah, I'm really sad about this, honestly, because I think that paxil has been doing some very interesting stuff since this is kind of an OG sort of exchange that's been going on as peer to peer. It's Bitcoin and they've been instrumental in encouraging Bitcoin adoption in Latin America and Africa. Really going after the market of people who really need Bitcoin and access to Bitcoin. So one of the things that ray yussuf, the CEO, has said in his post, is that the issues have been linked to the marketplace, but also they've had some issues within the company and losing some key figures and it's just been hard for them to keep going. That's the deal with them. They are going to be allowing withdrawals. They are trying to go about it responsibly from as far as I can tell. Last week they announced that they were going to be refunding customers of their packs full earn program who lost funds in Celsius because the funds that were tied up up there is in Celsius were considered by the courts to be part of the bankruptcy materials. So they couldn't access their funds. So the tax will decided they would just reform the customers themselves. So yeah, I think it's kind of a sad day for Bitcoin peer to peer marketplaces.

Which Crypto Exchanges Are Staying or Leaving Canada?

"Jen, you got the first story we're going up north to Canada, at least. I guess you're already there. I'm already here. Yeah, I'm bringing you guys with me. Come on up north to Canada where crypto regulation is getting tighter. So regulation is tightening for crypto exchanges and firms are responding and cracking has filed pre registration paperwork with the Ontario securities commission to become a registered restricted dealer in Canada, coinbase is in talks to remain in the country while one of the articles will be discussing today says that it looks like finance is likely to leave Adam. I'm going to kick this off to you first. What do you make of these tighter regulations all the way up north? We've got the cold weather and now we can't even really interact with crypto the way we want to. Well, I'll leave some of the Canada specific sort of analysis for you, but my take on an overall is that Canada is largely dependent and drives a lot of its monetary policy by sort of what's going on here in the United States, policy around banking and stuff like that. The banking sector up in Canada is also significantly smaller and much more kind of involved with the state than we typically see down here in the U.S.. So it's not surprising to me that they're also on this sort of tightening regime. What seems to be nice at least about the Canadian rules, though, is that there do appear to be actual rules that they're giving for people to follow. And then you have a choice of who I want to follow these new rules or do I want to no longer do business in this country. And that's the choice that really I don't think has been given in the U.S. to many of the entities that are here and are trying to kind of do both. So not surprising to see that. Also not surprising to see that some exchanges are willing to double down on that kind of regulatory process. When you're an exchange like crack and you're an exchange like coinbase, the hoops you're already jumping through as a U.S. regulated entity are probably as onerous, maybe a little bit more onerous than what you're going to get up in Canada. So if your entire business model is built around jumping through all these regulatory hoops that 95% of the companies out there aren't willing to jump through, it does make sense to me that you would continue to jump through them in a market that was similar to

"Okay, so we've got about 5 minutes here. I'm going to clear the runway and let you go because there is lots of news on what's going on in Israel. And there really is only one story that I can see in Israel right now. And that is the growing backlash in the civil unrest and it is spreading to perhaps the military as well over what the Knesset in the Netanyahu government is trying to do with judicial reform. Can you kind of spell it out for the American audience, Michael? Well, you put it pretty succinctly, Dwayne. It's just facing perhaps its greatest crisis. Outside of wars and terror, this is the greatest civil crisis we've ever faced. The government, moving fast and legislation that we're completely overall our judicial system, create a situation where the government will appoint all the judges in the Supreme Court, not unlike in the United States, but unlike the United States, the Supreme Court will not have a right of judicial review, the right to overturn a piece of legislation by the Knesset. Now, in Israel, we only have two branches of government as opposed to the three in the United States. One of the judiciary, if you sort of, if you hamstring the judiciary, then you really have no checks on government. And that's what is really going out to protest today. Not tens of thousands, hundreds of thousands right now blocking our major artery. The I alone freeway in Tel Aviv, Tel Aviv is effectively shut down today because of this. People just didn't bother going to work.

The Crypto Industry's Banking Crisis

"Plenty going on a little bit of a crypto banking crisis going on and Jen is going to take a hack at that one with the first story of the day. What do you got? All right, so in the face of this crypto banking crisis, crypto dot com is struggling to maintain its Fiat on ramps. The exchange's current banking partner is only accessible to users in the European Economic Area and in other news, you'll remember we spoke about silver gate yesterday working with the FDIC to try and stay afloat. Now they are saying that they are going to voluntarily liquidate and wind down operations. Zach, I'm going to toss this one off to you. Where do we go from here? Yeah, we were talking just yesterday like watch this story and that sure enough voluntary liquidation hit that night. Wow, amazing. Anyway, silvergate was, as we discussed yesterday, a major partner to many crypto firms in the space, providing both Fiat, offering up on ramp, and also just banking services, right? They had been sort of a pioneer in serving an emerging sector. And by way of their association with FTX and almita, they seem to have passed away. So they're being wound down, that's something that sends multiple players in the space scrambling to look for additional banking partners. And I think it's becoming more and more difficult. Again, in the wake of this joint pronouncement in January from U.S. banking regulators that touching crypto is bad, according to them. And so therefore, people are trying to figure out how to make this work. It really does seem as though crypto and the U.S. is in crisis right now. Off ramp into the beloved U.S. dollar is indeed compromised at scale, right? There's still several banky partners out there signature we mentioned yesterday. Customers bank, we mentioned previously. But these are banks that are potentially proceeding at their own risk, right? They probably have better risk parameters in place. A lot of them didn't have exposure to FTX, so they should be fine

Tensions Go Public Between Aptos and Sui Blockchains

"So the first story is kind of goofy, but it's fun. And that's what we're here for on the hash. There is a little bit of a feud happening. So there's a big conference happening right now in Denver, east Denver, and there are some side events that happened. One of the side events is hosted by ponton a crypto wallet startup. Backed by the aptos blockchain. And they are hosting the move con conference later this week in the aptos house on the sidelines of 8th Denver. So the focus of this event is move. MOVE move. And that's a coding language that Facebook engineers originally developed for the defunct project DM. It's also the base language used by both aptos and sui. These are two blockchains that emerged in part from Facebook's defunct, stablecoin project. So there were invitations and then this invitations to this little event. And of course, going to events is all about going to the side parties. And well, there were disinvitation. So the sui foundation is now not going to be attending move con on March 3rd. And they're kind of annoyed by this because obviously, you know, pawn is a wallet started up backed by the app just blockchain and now the rival move platform sui is not allowed to go. So what's the big deal between these two? Aptos is implementation of move uses an address centric model and works closely with blockchain networks. And it involves two ledgers and there's like a lot of techie stuff. But so they have an address centric model, whereas Sue is move implementation uses an object centric model. So that means tokens and smart contracts and NFTs are displayed as objects and makes the ownership of particular things really explicit.

Core Scientific Paid More Than $1M to CEO-Affiliated Jet Company

"Okay, first story, as you can see, if you're watching the video, but I'll read out the headline if you're just listening to the audio. Crypto minor course scientific paid more than 1 million to CEO affiliated personal jet companies according to coin desk. This story actually came out over the summer, but we have a little more details now because it's chapter 11 filings. Essentially here, of course, scientific was using a affiliate company, the CEO, Michael of it, to fly a private jet to and from assume his residence in other executives at core scientific and then to their facilities, the excuse being for efficient travel and use of time, stone, tower air is a charter flight company used in the past by core scientific for primarily transporting employees clients and personal or potential our data center sites and remote locations, which are often far from major airports. As according to chief mining officer, Russell can. It's an interesting statement. I will say that I'm like, yes, there's trouble remote stuff. But there's definitely term people's headlines. There's a lot of money for a company that's known chapter 11. It's definitely something you cover. Want to throw it over to you, get your take on it. Anyway, I think you had a pretty good analysis over the summer when we first saw this came out. I don't want to, I don't want to butcher it because I know this headline says it's like 1.65 mil, not like originally we thought it was somewhere between two and four mil in total, not just for 2022. I could be wrong about that. But you had a tweet basically comparing it to other industries and how much their executives spend on jet travel. And it was kind of like, it was a lot more than even a lot of mainstream tech companies. Yeah. And I think that just my quick take is it just kind of speaks to the exuberance is that we see a lot of these administrations that run these Bitcoin mining companies as public miners. We had some pretty good analysis from one of our analysts here in meru. It has trade index. He ran some numbers for public minor administrative costs as a percentage of revenue since 2021. And core scientific spent 41% of their revenue on administrative costs since 2021. And that's actually kind of in the middle of the pack. If you look at some other miners, you know, marathon spent 88% iris spent 56 and 55% clean spark 53%, but digital 45% stronghold 43%. And then we get to core scientific coming in at 7th overall, these public companies in terms of public spending for administration as a ratio of revenue. So 41% to me seems pretty high. This is something that Yara has been harping on for a while that a lot of these executives of these public miners are very handsomely compensated.

Interactive Brokers Launches Crypto Trading in Hong Kong

"Zach. You got our first story. What's up? Yeah, I do. Let's go to Hong Kong. We're going to talk about interactive brokers setting up a institutional offering over in Hong Kong. This is rolling out Bitcoin and eth trading to professional investors over in Hong Kong. And I think it really speaks to the shifting geographical landscape, especially in Asia where the mood around crypto is a little bit less dour than it is over here in North America. Obviously with these recent SEC actions, the mood in American crypto is a bit dark. That said, over in Hong Kong, we're seeing an institutional product roll out in addition to some other interesting developments relating to retail. So a couple of things to talk about, I think Hong Kong obviously has been maybe making a play for some of its former glory as a kind of one of the original Asian crypto capitals. Boss a little bit of that shine to Singapore. But even beyond that, you know, Korea, Japan, there's still a lot of excitement in those markets all over in the west, things are a bit bleak. So again, let's go to Hong Kong, talk about the situation there. Definitely a very important part of the crypto ecosystem. And it has been for quite a while. A lot of trading firms set up there. A lot of different legal entities running out of Hong Kong. Hasn't really been in the spotlight the last few years that a lot of eyes have been on the United States or Western Europe. That's where a lot of developers have been. That's where a lot of the action has been. Obviously, we are living in a new regulatory regime with crypto as well as Zach was just mentioning the SEC stuff. So I think people are going to start looking internationally and I think Hong Kong is a strong contender for where people might look towards because it has strong government that has clear rule of law and there's a lot of capital there,

"Our guest is Lauren conlin. She's an entertainment commentator all around great chick. Lauren come and welcome. Thank you so much for having me. How are you? I'm doing fantastic. Check this out. So again, I've been trying to get you on the phone for like a week because I entertainment topics at 1130 at night and I said, okay, I'm talking with the producer. And I said, listen, I want to see what's going on. And he looks around and he goes, hey, I'm looking at TMZ and the number one story is this Joe Exotic thing, and I was like, oh, I was like, you know, my friend Lauren just did a thing with them. I was like, oh, maybe I can get her on this topic. And he was like, is her name Lauren conlin? And I was like, yeah. And he said, oh my gosh, he's at the top of TMZ and they're talking about her interview and blah blah blah. It was all this controversy. And I said, oh my gosh, well, we're gonna have to talk about that because I'll tell you a little story. You know, so I'm a sucker for my kids. I have two daughters and one day, it was during the lockdown, and my kids were home and climbing the walls and whatever. And my daughter tells me, so dad, what do you think about the Tiger king? And I was like, the Tiger, what, what are you talking about? Because she tells me that she's a guy. He raises tigers and blah blah blah. And he's kind of weird. His people do meth. And I was like, what is going on here? This is crazy. They're gay. And they're like this and they're like, oh my God, it's on TV. She said, no, it's on Netflix. And I said, oh my goodness. So I said, well, let me see what's going on here. And I was glued. I sat in one chair for like 7 and a half hours and watched a whole series with her. And I thought that was absolute insanity. And insanity streaming insanity. And you just had a run in with this insanity tell us about it. I did. And it's like, it's so crazy, rich. It's hard to even know where to start because I feel like I'm in recovery right now, and I'm not even being like, I'm not even being a jerk or sarcastic, but it was crazy. So basically, you know how we all have to get our sources, right? Us entertainment people. We get them wherever we can. So I have this guy on Instagram kind of bugging me a little bit. He had a lot of followers. They appeared to be fake, but I was like, I kind of entertained him. I try to be nice. You know, whatever. We had a few friends in common. So he tells me, hey, well, if you ever want to get an exclusive of Joe Exotic, let me know I rep him. And I'm like, yeah, okay, whatever. You know, I just kind of entertained him. He still bugging me, wants to work together. And then he hits me up again and says, hey, the Joe Exotic thing is still on the table. And this was the same day. He ends up texting me this that it came out in the news that Carole Baskin did an interview in 2021 claiming that her husband Don Lewis was still alive and living in Costa Rica. Yes. Yes. So basically, yeah. So everybody just kind of looked past this statement she made. And then it ended up going viral on TikTok. And for people that don't know, Don Lewis was her first husband, I believe that disappeared. He actually went to the cops before his disappearance and said, if I die, Carole Baskin did it my way. And Lauren, that is jump in here and explain that these are all people that have big exotic pets, big cats, tigers, and whatnot. Running around their properties and they keep them multiple cats as pets. And the going rumor was that miss Baskin allegedly fed her husband to one of these tigers. Go right ahead. Correct. Correct. That was one of the rumors. I mean, and it kind of sounds plausible because I mean, as of right now, his body has not been found. So this kid hits me up again on the day that this hits the news cycle. So at this point, I'm like, does he not see this? I mean, I'm happy he's kind of offering this to me, but I don't think you see this. So I say to him, well, now is a good time. So why don't we get him on the phone? I will ask for his comment about what he thinks books are claims about Don Lewis being alive. Well, the prison system, you know, it takes a while to get media approved to be on the phone. So he says, well, that could take a week. And I said, yeah, that's not going to work. The story will be stale. So why don't we, why don't I email you some questions? And you can give them to him. So he says, okay, he does it. I get the audio back. I am floored, rich. I am floored at this audio. First of all, all I wanted was a comment on Carole Baskin. I don't know if you heard the audio. He actually says, if Don Lewis is alive, I will voluntarily put myself on death row. And that was like the first thing he said. And if you watch Joe Exotic, you were like, wow, that is just, he loves to say shopping things. He hasn't changed, you know? And I was like, oh my goodness. But then, you know, he goes on to detail just all of the horrible treatment he's getting in prison. You know, he basically is reiterating the fact that the FBI decided to side and take and take Jeff Lowe and his wife, Lauren, Joe's ex partner, their word for everything, and cooperate with them. So he's saying all this stuff, you know, I post the interview, I posted everywhere. I put it on TikTok, Instagram, I'm trying to blow it up. I wake up the next morning, and I get a DM from Jeff Lowe and his wife, who took over the Tiger king park for Joe, and who are now, they claim they're not hiding, but they are living in Mexico. Right. Because we all just want to live in Mexico, right? Yeah, okay. I mean, sure. Do you want to live there and raise your kid there and have them get an education there? No, I like cancun. Go right ahead. Yeah, there you go. Whatever. You like to have the pina coladas on the beach when you're stressed, all right? So. Basically, being reached out to me and they're like, well, do you want to hear our side of the story? And I was like, of course I do. Now, meanwhile, Joe exotics like rap or whoever this kid is that had been hitting up, hitting me up seeds that and start harassing me saying, well, you can't take that interview. And I was like, oh, I'm sorry. Are we done here? I don't really report to you. I don't have anything to do with you. I don't really get what you're still talking to me type of thing. Well, that turns into rich and utter harassment. I mean, to the point where I was like, I'm taking it, you can get out of my face. I think at one point, because he was so unhinged, I offered him like a $200 booking fee just to go away or something like that, which made him even more mad. And I was just like, what is happening? So I take this interview with Jeff and Lauren. I put it out because I want to hear both sides. I still make it clear even to Jeff and Lauren. I do believe that Joe did not have a fair trial, right? Between the show and the web show and the fact that the FBI decided to take one criminal word over another, it just didn't make sense to me. So I made that

New York Banks Need Crypto Business Permission

"Adam is gonna take us to New York for a bit of news, a crypto regulation, and take it away. Indeed, thank you, Zach. So yeah, so our first story today comes from the state of New York where the department of financial services has laid down some new restrictions and rules on what banks need to do before they can interact with cryptocurrency. According to the guidance, banks registered in the state will need to seek regulatory permission from the department 90 days before they get involved with the new asset class, even if it's through a third party. The banks will need to submit business plans and operating models as well as who they think their customer is and how they intend to approach them. This applies to all services, including crypto transmission, custody, buying, and selling. Again, even through a third party. This isn't the first time that we've seen really pretty strict rules like this come out of the state of New York. I would say that this is actually kind of what the state of New York has become known for in the crypto industry over the last dozen years. But it is kind of, I think these are the most strict requirements that we've seen so far. Zach, I'll kick it back to you. You paid a lot of attention to stories like these during your time at coin desk. What's your kind of read on this as it fits into the history of things? Yeah, I mean, New York with the pit licenses has always been pretty aggressive in seeking to regulate crypto firms. Sometimes to much consternation among the crypto community. There's a lot of people from the olden days who say that New York really drove out a lot of its crypto firms without good cause. So the fact that they're sort of ramping up this, I think makes sense is in keeping with past steps from this particular state regulator. And I think it also comes as banks are looking to figure out how to serve this asset class to their customers, right? We saw a lot of news out of nig working with smaller banks to position crypto basically savings accounts within both local banks and credit unions across the country, certain banks have experimented with that. I think that was certainly a function of when interest in Bitcoin was significantly higher than it is right now. So we're not hearing a ton on that front, but it would make sense that in response to some of those news stories that have come out. The regulator is seeking a pretty rigorous set of rules by which these banks need to follow.

"This is the Tom Hartman program. Hey, hey, happy Friday, TGIF, Shabbat shalom, Juma modic. It is the end of the week. It is anything goes Friday. It's you and me for three whole hours, no guests. Let's talk about what's going on in the world, whatever's on your mind. Feel free to give us a shout. We can get into that. There are a few things that I would like to put on the agenda as it were, a few stories I want to share with you number one, this is kind of cool. Post pollster Simon Rosenberg, he does polling. His Twitter handle is Simon wdc if you want to check it out. Is modeling voter turnout right now. And if you compare the last midterm election 2018 with today with 2022, on the Republican side, there were 13 million 900,000 people who showed up in 2018. At this point in time to early vote, 13 million 13.9 million. Right now, among Republicans, it's 12.7 million. So Republican voter turnout is down from four years ago. On the other hand, for Democrats, it was 13.9 million had turned out at this point in 2018. And right now, 16.1 million have turned out. So. It's looking good for Democrats. I'm hopeful. So anyhow, we'll first story. Also, Donald Trump is running. What's that going to do to America? We'll get to that in just a moment. And all the racism that's going to come with it. In fact, I really want to talk about that. Also, scientists are saying the standard time is healthier than daylight savings time. That change is going to happen over this weekend. The scientists agree with me and Sean and Nate and we will talk about that Joyce and we will talk in Louise and we will talk about that. In just a few minutes. In the second hour of the program, I want to get into my op-ed published today over at Harvard report dot com titled America should buy out the fossil fuel industry. And yes, there is huge precedent for this. And Republicans have a weird definition of the word saving when it when they use it the same sentence with social security. We'll talk about that in the second hour and the third hour how Donald Trump's hands are dripping in blood and we're not exaggerating and I want to tell you about this amazing story. We'll get into this in the third hour of the program of Trump and Manafort hooking up with Russian agents of Vladimir Putin in 2016 specifically actually 2015, specifically to screw Ukraine. That the reason Russia supported Trump's presidency was to screw Ukraine because they were planning on invading Ukraine. And this is just amazing story. Jim rittenberg wrote about it in today's watch air today's New York Times and I'll tell you, I'll do a deep dive on that a third hour. But I want to start out with Donald Trump says he's going to, well, not Donald Trump. He hasn't said it yet, but three different people within Trump world have leaked to or have gone to axios who publish this breathless story this morning. November 14th is the day that Donald Trump is going to announce he's running for president. Again. By coincidence, that's probably the time period that's probably the week, it'll be, that'll be about the time that the elections are all decided. Finally, and after the court challenges and everything else, that's probably when the Department of Justice is going to start dropping indictments against Donald Trump and people around him. And he's hoping I believe that he can get his announcement out before the indictments come so that his being a candidate for president, he thinks will help him. Actually what I might do is it might cause the Department of Justice and The White House to decide that they really need to put this at arm's length and a point of special prosecutor. And if they do that, I have two words for Donald Trump and his campaign. Can star. But all that said, if Donald Trump is running for president again, you know what we are going to see. This country is going to become meaner. It's going to become more violent. You're going to see more road rage. You're going to see more guns. You're going to see more racists out and about we are as a country going to become more callous to helping other humans. And all of our safety, our social safety nets will be challenged. Now, feel free to add to this list if you have thoughts on Trump running for president, but that's my list so far. And I am fairly confident in that list because we've seen it all already. This is exactly what we saw happen during the 5 years that Donald Trump was running for president and was president. All those things happen. All those things increased. And we're suffering the consequences of it right now. In addition, one of the things I mentioned was racism. I think it's really important to focus on this to hone in on this. There there was just a remarkable story on cause net effect. He tweeted this. This is an old clip. I played this years ago on this program. And my apologies for not recalling the name of the woman who is issuing the warning here. That's on me. I tried to track it down this morning. It was her last name is Elliott. But in fact, I may be able to no, it's not showing. But this is miss Elliott, warning us of actually why the Republicans have been so outspoken in opposing abortion rights. Listen to this. No. White people are really frightened. If you don't understand the destruction of Planned Parenthood,

"The ways of getting through this such as perhaps getting that near $2 trillion infrastructure package through I should say Well I think right now Joe Manchin is the number one story worldwide because he's the one holding the line on passing any legislation that would prevent fiscal cliff from occurring in January So I think yes a lot could go right in terms of the United States could start giving people tons of money again But this is a midterm election year And the pressure is going to be tremendous to not pass this legislation All right Well let's just have a look at also what the likely impact globally from all this You said that he's probably at the moment Joe Manchin Just the most important person with regards to where the global economy goes So it gives us a sense of the transmission methods and I suppose one of the chief ones would be the way the dollar behaves itself Well it certainly would And we've seen the strength in the dollar which of course the rest of the world does not want to see And we're seeing slowing sales coming out of JPMorgan's credit card data for example in the month of December that's not what you want to see right ahead of the Christmas holidays So the transmission mechanism is the fact that the United States is 21% of global GDP and of the United States economy 71% of it is consumption So if we're going to start seeing consumption get hit because there's no more fiscal because the fiscal impulse has turned negative then it's going to be very difficult to paint a picture of any kind of a continuance of the recovery Well that citizen that the speaking logic speaking here as well So the thing is what can other countries do about it China going in the other direction is now starting to ease What does that mean Well that's going to be beneficial but it's primarily going to be beneficial for China As I said the world trade the World Trade Organization anticipates that the global growth rate of trade will be cut in half this year So while good for the Chinese economy and they're trying to bolster domestic consumption and they're trying to bolster the mood of society ahead of Xi Jinping's fall Congress where.

"The writer takes the box and is about to pay him and ramat holds his hand. Please don't give me any money. I shall always be grateful babu just as you have a daughter. So do i have one in my own country. Eight is with her in mind. That i came with a few reasons for your daughter. I didn't come to trade with you. Then he put a hand inside his big loose shirt and took out from somewhere close to his heart a crumpled sheet of paper unfolding it very carefully. He spread it out on my table. There was a small handprint on the paper. Not a photograph not a painting. The hand had been rubbed with some soot and pressed down onto the paper every year. Rahmat hamad carried this momentum of his daughter in his breast pocket when he came to sell raisins in calcutta streets as if the touch of that soft small childish hand brought solace to his huge homesick breast. My eyes swam at the site of it. I forgot then that he was an afghan raisin seller and. I was a bengali babu. I understood then that he was as i am that he was a father. Just as i am a father i would urge every american or european or indian fearful of the coming afghan refugee hoard to read tagore's story. It might confirm your fears. The refugee could like mahamat be violent in the defense of his rights. Even though immigrants commit crimes at far lower rates than the native born but it might also ease them because in the end what changes hearts is in statistics about crime rates or even a new story. It is empathy. Which is the province of literature. Meany has become rehmat's replacement daughter and this to rings. True imigrants far from their own children often take care of other people's children and love them as their own as any immigrant. Nanny will tell you alone in the strange land. The parental impulse needs more of an outlet. Than ever i too am a parent of two grown sons and they are not the same as when they were children. The story of parenthood is one of continuous loss. When you stop being the center of your child's world and she even stopped coming to her father's study when she goes to school for the first time when she's more interested in spending saturday nights with her friends than with you when she leaves home altogether for college to get married but most of us experienced this loss in stages over years the refugee parent fleeing from the tyrant regime loses family. All at once in the space of a five hour flight to cut our he might be forced to leave his children behind or choose which of them to take with him and which to leave behind he experiences an exponential version of the loss. That all of us feel when our kids go to college or get married and move away. Part of the reason the biden administration didn't move quicker on evacuating the afghans. Who had risked their lives to help us. During the war was fear of a political backlash at home. The indian government has if anything and even worse record. It was very happy to send advisers and aid to friendly afghan regimes after the taliban fell as part of the new great game. it's playing with pakistan. The hindu nationalist bjp government did evacuate hindu and sikh afghans but reportedly was less enthusiastic about muslims tagore..

"The hindustan times newspaper and juggernaut books organized a rita thon of the story featuring eighteen of india's top celebrities. The story begins with gentle comedy. The narrator a writer keeps being disturbed in his study. By the prattle of his five year old daughter meany down the lane comes a kabul iwo ramat and afghan peddling dry fruits and nuts a seasonal migrant common all over india when such a thing was possible coming to sell his wares from the mountains to the dusty plains of british india. Meany finds him the one person willing to give her his undivided attention and they become friends. He tells her jokes makes elephant. Imitations brings her treats what does this. Giant afghan see in this little girl the writer and roma discussed the nineteenth century political situation in afghanistan. We talked about ab- door rahman's efforts to preserve the integrity of afghanistan against the russians and the british around the time. The story was written. These two superpowers were busy. Playing the great game creating afghanistan as a buffer between their empires. The durand line established in eighteen ninety three one year. After tagore's story came out was a one page piece of paper that still lies like a giant dagger. Severing the tribal pashtoon homeland. Then as now afghans were forced to flee or seek work outside their country due to the machinations of great powers but means mother is suspicious of the foreigner and her fears are reflected in today's republican talking points against admitting afghan refugees. They steal they kidnap small children. They could be terrorists. they're untrustworthy. if i tried to laugh off her suspicions she would launch into a succession of questions. So do people's children never go missing and is there. No slavery in afghanistan. Is it completely impossible for a huge afghan to kidnap a little child. Ramat is not the perfect refugee in a fight with an indian customer who tries to lie his way out of paying for a shawl. You spot a common experience for migrant workers who find themselves cheated out of wages by native employers. He stabs the customer and is thrown into jail. The family forgets all about their afghan friend including the adorable little girl. she could be america after. We've had our playtime with afghanistan. As for the fickle meany. Even her father would have to admit that her behavior was not very praiseworthy. She swiftly forgot her old friend. The father to has complex attitudes towards the fruit peddler..

"The one story that captures the immigrant experience. Like no other by sue. Keto meta suka to meta is the author of this land is our land and immigrants manifesto and of maximum city. Bombay lost and found which was a finalist for the pulitzer prize. He was born in calcutta and lives in new york city where he is an associate professor of journalism at new york university. Sometimes the best take on current affairs is found not in the punditry of the cable shows but in great literature watching the horrific scenes in kabul the anguish of parents handing their babies to soldiers. The bodies falling from planes made me reach for something deeper more profound. That could help me understand the human dimensions. So i reread kabul iowa a story written by the indian nobel laureate rubbing durant to gore in eighteen. Ninety two it's become a phenomenon in india. it's part of school syllabi. All across the country has been made into numerous films in multiple indian languages and still shapes popular indian attitudes towards afghans. It makes me cry every single time. I read it. It is one of the greatest stories about the migrant experience ever written and it deserves a global audience outside india particularly now and come to think of it. It deserves to be read. in india. now which is experiencing a government led upsurge of fear and hatred of afghan muslim refugees. The most harrowing image from the evacuation of kabul was the hundreds of people clinging to the giant. Us air force plane as it takes off at least two of them held on until the plane took off and fell from it to tiny black dots. Crudely circled in red in a twitter. Post what desperation made them cling to a plane taking off into the sky. What do they dream of. who do they love. Kabuli walla provides some of the answers and also raises other questions about the complex attitudes of hosts to migrants kabul. Hawala is a story not about a political refugee but about someone who has to leave his troubled land to find work and to support his family on a planet on the move. Whether you're slotted as a refugee migrant expatriate or tourist can mean literally the difference between life and death etymology.

I think randy is now working on a project with somebody who's eighty years old and so it's it's all about communication because it's helping a client to decide. What are they need. And how are they going to live. And how does it affect her house plans for the future. I'm curious that being said how has a and it's funny because at some point we're going to stop talking about twenty twenty right we're gonna when we get through the pandemic we're going to stop talking about it until the time comes again to start looking at it again. I mean you know if you think about it. After the after the spanish flu architecture and design changed dramatically you know gave way to to the ideas associated you know in the in the nineteen twenties talking about clean and an hygienic in architecture and design something that that hasn't really been explored and i and i i feel like we're we're on the precipice of that again and i'm curious if the past twelve months have changed the manner in which you each individually in the firm as a whole think about design and think about has it changed the way you think about the work locals year. "That is is that's just one story of so many that are like that. I mean, the margin of air when you're on a plane, and you're on a flight is so small. And even something as small as, uh, You know, someone having a psychotic break? What could be considered small? If it goes well, But if it doesn't go well, we're really in a world of hurt. So what was this passenger saying? We're doing Nonsense to tell you the truth. There was, um she was throwing light things around the cabin if it escalated to more aggressive violence, and we would have diverted, um, just interacting with strangers making everyone around her uncomfortable. She was. We're not sure physically if she was okay if she was going to There's some physical symptoms that we saw. And you know so many incidents that happened like that to our It's like a whodunit case to you're trying to figure out what is this person eaten, Have they? Are they traveling with anybody on board? Have they consumed alcohol? Have they consume drugs? Um, what medication are they on? And so you're trying to Kabul all of this together? For someone who is most likely and especially in this case was not being honest with us, while also trying to, you know, maintain safety and control of the cabin while also trying to serve drinks and food as well. It's it's a real Balancing act, you know, And I would imagine that in a circumstance like that, in addition to assessing the condition and potential threat of this person. You've got all the people around them, You know, many of whom may be a little uneasy about flying. Anyway, You've got to somehow find some way to reassure them, I assume with an expression of a gesture. Exactly And not only that were also trained to think. Okay, this is this is a big scene that's happening right now. I'm giving this all of my attention, But I'm also keeping one eye on the rest of the cabin. Because what if this is a diversion? What if this is trying to take our attention away while something else is happening on the aircraft that is actually the nefarious action? Part of our training is is mentally getting us into a space where We're always just aware of our surroundings were constantly aware of the passengers and the plane and everything around us, because, like I said, the margin of error is very small. And if something goes sideways, we need to be Prepared to react quickly. There's a moment as this crisis in the story intensifies and the crew I mean the including the flight attendants are preparing for disaster. The lead flight attendant. His name is Joe. She is admiring the way that they had come together the passengers in the cabin, she said, the souls on board had become a family. In the short life of this family was about to end and as a group, they face their mortality together. Joe was so proud to be with his people proud to have added Her voice to theirs. Um This is an interesting moment. Where where the flight attendant is really having some kind of very meaningful connection with this random group of people. Did you ever feel that? I felt that all the time. That's what it is. You know, It's your in an enclosed environment with a select group of people and for the period of that flight, whether it's a quick 45 minute flight or a six hour cross country. Trans con. It's It's you guys and you're all in this together. And Especially when you face any sort of situation. It just becomes poignant that you're a little collective. Group. And I can I can watch romantic about aviation all day long. But Joe's outlook that she that she puts there I mean, I wrote that because that's that's how I look at the plane. That's how I look at a group of passengers. We are a family and it's a limited time. But for that limited time, it's us. You know you're getting it. This book contract as a first novel, you know, based on your experiences as a flight attendant has gotten a fair amount of attention and you know in the publishing Press. And I have to say this reminded me of when Scott Tarot wrote his novel presumed Innocent, which has been gosh more than 20 years now, but I mean, he was a lawyer, and he wrote this book, which had this sort of really kind of grabbed the feel of Sort of randomness and disorganization of the criminal justice system. And I remember him saying in an interview that lawyers around him were saying, Gosh, I should have thought of that. Yeah, I just write a book about this stuff. And he was saying, Well, yeah, it's not quite that simple, and he'd actually spent years you know, studying creative writing. It's not just like getting your experiences down on a page. Um And I assume it was not quite so easy for you. How did you learn how to write a novel? It definitely was not easy. Um, and it took a lot of work. I mean, a lot of work. I convinced myself to start with very small goals, and the first goal was just finished the story and like I said, I didn't tell anybody that I was doing this and part of the reason I didn't tell anybody what I was doing. This was because I had already put myself out there by moving to New York after I graduated from college with a degree musical theater and pursuing my dreams on Broadway and in front of all my friends and family in the whole world failed miserably. And I had moved home to Phoenix moved back in with my parents, and I was embarrassed. And by the time I licked my wounds enough, and sort of had had gotten up enough courage to be able to do something creative again. It was writing and so I would start to write stories and I would abandon them if I'm being honest, because I my confidence was shaken. I didn't have any confidence in anything that I was putting out artistically. But when I had the idea for this book, it was the first time that like I was just saying, I need to know what happened to these characters was stronger than my Fear of failure and my feelings of inadequacy. Um, I I've read that You wrote this book in part pieces at a time while you were on red eye flights. Uh, tell us how that work. I did? Yeah. Red eyes. I'm a I'm naturally a night owl. Also, red eyes are my favorite flights to work. And, you know, once the plane got airborne, and we did initial service and got everybody kind of tucked into bed, basically, um, the plane got quiet and I I had the forward galley to myself because I worked in first class most of the time. And so I would write and I would write longhand on the back of the manifest, er, the the back of a catering bill or whatever I had there and passenger would come around the corner and asked for something, you know, and I just sort of flip the paper over and tuck it, Tuck it away. And then when, once they were taken care of, I'd pull it back out and keep going. It's interesting that your mom and sister were both flight attendants. Did they spend a long time at it? Yeah, we call it the family business. And yeah, my My mom did it her whole adult life, basically..

"11. It's Michelle Palencia and Eric Pots hut in for Dim in ski and Doyle today, they're back with you tomorrow afternoon. So Friday morning we were in for Spadea. Yes. And that was the day The indoor mask mandate was lifted in New Jersey for vaccinated people and people were calling in all morning and saying that so many people were still wearing masks, and I made a bold prediction Did it was totally wrong. You made the prediction that by the afternoon People would be taken their masks off and being liberated. So then you well, at first, you said maybe it'll take a couple weeks, I said. I said by the middle of this week, and then I changed it because the calls convinced me that it was gonna be different, and I was wrong. Yeah, So you were saying that by leg later on, more people would be taking off their masks. And now everywhere I went, the majority of people had their masks. So that's what we want to ask. Like. What was your mask experience over the weekend? Because this was the first weekend where you did not have to wear a mask indoors. Um, And did you notice that mostly everyone was not wearing a mask or people still wearing a mask. Where you may be unsure. Kind of like bringing your mask up to the store and not knowing what to do and then read the sign that said, Like I went into a bunch of stores today, and every story went into it said Outfront. It said. Vaccinated people do not have to wear the mask, right is that I mean, that's what you're saying. Yeah, I saw that. But I saw so many people have the majority of people had their mask on. And I did feel like I was getting looks. You did now you're saying this off the air When you walked into a store, you felt like people were staring. Seeking out. People who were mascot's was like, Please like to be somebody else in here because I just couldn't believe that all these people were still wearing their masks. You know, I mean, Hmm. You know, I don't know how many people that what it is a four million people in New Jersey They have been vaccinated or whatever it is. Well, you've been vaccinated. Take it off. And you, would you You've been living by the science for a year. You've been swearing that the science for you. Well, now the science has take it off. Take your mask off, Live free. So did you notice that when you went into stores over the weekend today, now that in New Jersey the mass mandate has been lifted for vaccinated people. Are you noticing that people are no longer wearing their masks? Or a lot of people are still wearing their mass depend. I mean, I was down the shore over the weekend. I wasn't wearing my mask. I didn't feel like people were staring at me when I went into a store, but how other people not wearing it needed more people wearing or not? I would say. I really feel like it was like 50 50 real I went, I would say it was nobody stared at my understanding. Tell uncomfortable like I walked into Home Depot where I live, not down the shore where I live, and that was the first door I walked into without the mask on. And I notice other people weren't wearing But then again, I did notice. A lot of people still were so I'd say 90 90 10 80 20 people were wearing that again. 90 10 80 20 whatever. That the majority of people were wearing masks. All right, So are you still finding that the majority of people are still wearing a mask or where you live? Would you say it's 50 50 more people aren't wearing it trying to get a feel of what people are doing in New Jersey. If people are taking off the mask, or if they're still wearing it. 1 802 831 on 1.5 is the phone number 1 802 8311.5, I guess coming off that Off the morning show. When we did that, Friday morning, I was ready. Like I feel like people are gonna be staring at me. Or it was gonna be awkward situations when I went into stores, But again, every store I went into nobody. I felt I felt eyes on you felt eyes all felt eyes on May I felt I was being judged on. I'm judged all the time anyway, but I felt that was being judged more harshly. And I have now I have a complex. What store Curious was like small businesses or Wallace Food store. I have not gone into the supermarket. Yeah, So are most people in the supermarket wearing? Yeah. Yeah, So that's a good that's good to know. I did not. So I went into like Home Depot. I went into five below. I went into a bunch of stories. Um, and didn't have it on you. But I have not gone to the supermarket. I've gone. I've gone into stores because I needed a part for my pool. Backwash shows I couldn't find backwards. So I've gone to several stores looking for backwash hoses. Not wearing a mask and everybody you know, wearing a mask and people looking at me like loads. It's not even a sign on the door anymore. Like you don't. It doesn't say you have to wear your man now and again. Like I said, every I haven't seen any where it said mask was required, but every store I went to it, so they don't have to if you're vaccinated, but There was only one story went into where the employees work. It was 50, I would say was split. Some people were not wearing it. I think every story went to the employees had. Yeah, mostly. Every other story went to the police had it on but one store. It was Some people didn't so I think today's my my daughter's Liberation Day She gets to not wear a mask today. She works at Whole foods. I think today the employees could take it off. All right. So are you still wearing it or you're not wearing it? Or you noticed people still are. 1 802 831 of 1.5 is the phone number. Let's go to rob. In Washington. You're in New Jersey when a 1.5 Hi, Rob. Hey, guys. How you doing today? Good, Rob. What a wonderful name. So I thought, Thank God it's over the weekend. It seemed like what stores I went into with detective had this coming up. Wait. Say that again. I missed what you just said. Every story went into what It's certain stores. They Barry. Okay. Whoa, whoa. What you told WalMart and a lot of people I saw even some of the employees were not wearing that. Put away into the gas station to buy cigarettes and I would say. Three out of five of the people in there had best Uh, yeah, That's what I mean. Three out of five people were mask. Yeah, Okay. I guess I haven't. But I was not in any small stores over the weekend. Like I went to Walmart today. Some people weren't some people were but I haven't been to a store where there were only like three people inside. You know, I have event. Yeah, not not something that small. Yeah, the other thing. I think the other thing I think I noticed also is the people that are still wearing that Very seemed to be just as afraid of somebody without a mask on saying something to them as vice versa play when I was in the gestation buying coffee this morning, I don't worry that there was another gentleman in there with him asking, you could almost feel the tension in the air. And I opened up to take the morning. How you doing? You know the mess. Only in anything. You know it. They're feeling big, and it just did. They settled down the east out, But there was an initial uncomfortable next. I definitely felt that all right, Rob, Thanks so much. We gotta run. Appreciate the call to New Jersey. When a 1.51 802 8311.5 year call coming up. It's for 18 Years. New Jersey Fast traffic. Seeing lots of traffic on 80 on.

"Our first story from Alana Can our ski was told that our Slam series in Chicago the theme of the evening was busted. Was born in the former Soviet Union in a country that is known as the last dictatorship in Europe. I was about five years old when the Soviet Union crumpled and my parents filed for the paperwork to move to America. And so in December, we packed up all the very few things we had into two suitcases. It was my mom. My dad, My grandmother and my 20 year old sister and I and we were leaving behind this place That was Empty. The stores were empty. The streets were empty. The hearts of the people often times were empty because it was pretty sad was a pretty sad place to live at that time. So we will make this long journey with two suitcases in hand for four people, five people and we end up in the suburbs of Detroit, Michigan. And so it's December in Detroit and the five of us pile into a two bedroom apartment on the second floor, where lots of other immigrants live, and we all displaced ourselves in different rooms and pockets of the living room. And we unpack or two suitcases and realize there's a whole bunch of stuff that we need. And so we put on the fur coats that yes, my parents brought in the two suitcases that we had and the hat. And we don't have a car or anyone to drive us or not knowledge of how to navigate the bus system. So we walk. So December 1991 my grandmother, My mom, My dad. My 20 year old pissed off sister that she used to live in Detroit and five year old me are walking down the side of the street in Detroit. Towards a K mart and it was miserable. But we walk up to it and these magical doors just part open and this cold air breezes past us and their shelves of things that are full. Their clothes hanging everywhere and shoes piled up and people happy and boisterous and screaming and announcements over the intercom and we start walking in my sister's drawn towards the close, and my grandmother's fascinated by the dollar 99 jewelry on my dad's trying to figure out what kind of toilet paper we need. And I turned the corner and I see this magical display of toys and Belarus. The toys that I had seen were like bouncy balls like there were shelves and shelves of bouncy balls. There were somewhat deflated, but, you know, bouncing ball and I didn't have any toys at that time. But there were shelves of toys They were like. Nerve falls and guns and Barbies and board games and I'm standing there shocked. Like as if, like, Heaven just sort of descended upon me and I my mom goes away to find my dad and I look up on the second shelf and I see this little tiny character of snow White. She was wearing this like pale blue dress with this little white apron on and a little basket. It's tiny and I reach up on my tippy toes and I pull her down and I put her in my pocket and I go to find my mom and we find my grandma. We find my sister and we walk out of the store with our toilet paper and nothing else. And we put our hats back on and we walk through the streets of Detroit back to our dingy two bedroom apartment and I take out snow White and I put her on my dresser and my mom turns to me and she goes. What ease that was like Mm. It's my It's my new friend. She's like. No, no, no, no, no, no. And we put.

Because you always think when you're in that in that one location are dealing was activity every day at that location and so you just think it's that location and people who have had things happen to them have a frame of reference and so they're really interested so when they buy the book that i get people emailing me saying you got just what happened to me and not not greystone in their own lives. I got rid of fifty stories. Maryam yeah because the editor called us and said you on your pace. It's going to be seven hundred pit. You can't do this like one hundred pages because yeah so my brother said you gotta go back through it and you've got to find some stories that you gotta take out. And so what i did was if i had stories in there were people said they. They felt this then. I took it out if they were inside the house. They said i was standing there. "I can, um way Liv and I one story about a 55 year old home in Houston in the memorial area. Have so feel tile floors and we have been over the last few years. We have been getting, um, efflorescence on the tile floors. And this was even before Harvey. We did not flood. But this was it started being noticeable. Even before Harvey we have had to leak detection companies come out, and neither of them found any leaks in the plumbing lines. So it's a process of elimination, and I'm wondering where we should go from here. You know, it's I've actually was sitting with a guy yesterday and had a conversation about moisture and concrete and slabs and stuff yesterday. Because what he used to do was specialize in stopping that moisture from coming through. He says in What he was telling me was a lot of it is being caused. By the way we're building our homes and changing them to the pressure differential from outside, versus inside our homes. Is drawing the moisture up through the Concrete because concrete is porous and allows this Effervescence to take place. So you know I hate gave me some papers. I'm gonna study and read and stuff, but In essence, what causes the Effervescence is moisture gets into the concrete. There's a chemical reaction. And that stuff just kind of grows like cotton candy onto your country. Normally, when you're in It doesn't happen a whole lot. Because the air conditioner keeps it d humidified enough that we don't have them the moisture issues. But if we're getting static pressure of moisture coming up through the concrete Well, then there's a new moisture source that can allow this to happen. So the first thing I would be looking at is drainage around the house standing water anywhere things like that, because what happens is a structure ages. You know, we've been mowing the yard for years and letting the grass clippings build up. We've been adding soil for low spots and doing flower beds and things like that. And when the house is built, or was five inches of slab showing now there's only two Well that allows moisture to get into the concrete as well and can start causing some of these issues. So the first thing like I said, check to make sure we don't have any place. That moisture could accumulate around the home. I see that you've got four inches of slab showing. And if not, maybe it's time to do some re grating tol care of that. On in the third thing that actually can add to this is Um, uh, as we raise our thermostats, and it's not d humidified as much, or our air conditioning system is acting up and not dehumidifier. Like it should that allows it to grow is well. Mm hmm. Okay. Well, it's been a while, Um and in fact, yeah, my first my first Intuitive thought, Woz. It could be a drainage issue. I mean, after after we ruled out no leaks in the pipes. Um, I thought perhaps it could be a drainage issue now on one side of the home. Um Yeah, a dog run it is. It is completely gravel. No foundation plantings around there at all, but we do have a on it's been installed there for years. A heavy duty plastic. Access a weed barrier with gravel put on top of it. And would that have anything to do with impeding drainage? It very well. Can it and worse than that, if When it was put in or it now from soil moving. If it's sloping towards the house a little bit, it could be taken all the rainwater and draining it towards the house. Mm hmm. Okay. Okay. Well, as I said, it's a process of elimination, but a good dream each company Um uh, that knows what they're doing. Could come out and help mitigate. Um, because it needs to be that needs to be looked at anyway. Sure, Let me have a recommendation. You had the lines checked. Did you have just the water lines or sewer lines or both? Our sewer lines. Okay? Yeah. Typically, if it's a water line leak, you're gonna know it and in our water lines in the Houston area are typically overhead anyways. Um Yeah, actually called due west my company. We do drainage all the time. Okay? I'd be more than happy to do this. I enjoy listening to your show and would be more than happy to entertain. Um, welcome out here, so I'll call on. Uh, Here's your office open on Monday. Yes, ma'am, and you can reach us at 713473. 7156 Thank you really Appreciate it, Kevin. Okay. You as well? Thank you, ma'am. "To a homeowner who had lost two dogs in just a couple of years to coyotes in Palestine. That was just one story, but Palestinians decided to do something about it. And the chief Coyote Hunter is on phone line with us now the mayor of Palestine Jim Schwantz, Mr Mayor, welcome. All right. Thank you very much. Have me out. Yeah, I appreciate it. So tell me how bad is the situation there? Well, you know, I've been married almost 12 years and I would say this is you know the last six months or so, if that has been the most calls to police into our Um, our officer, our games officer to, uh to complain. So it zit coming upon us is, uh, public servants, Tonto to respond to that, and that's what we're doing. We're taking the initial steps to try that. Try to get a handle on it. You know, it seems like they're so, um, transient, the coyotes that it would be kind of hard to find the Dan. I know a lot of them. Don't even sleep in tents. I mean, how do you How do you eradicate these Coyotes? The already right now. Steve is a the initial steps. There's service we've hired. They've had some really good success in neighboring towns. That's how the public sector works. We always share ideas with each other. We we call our police are police officer police chief reached out to others and see what they're seeing. And These are a few other municipalities have used this service and they've They've got a pretty good handle, at least on the data, and that's kind of where we're at right now, though, the initial steps is to, uh there's a website. You can go to our palate in website links to there, and then we're tracking sightings. And then we're gonna get some data and kind of go from there. That's kind of where we're at as we speak right now. Do you have any data in yet? No, it just It was just We just entered into an agreement with the individual with the with the company. So it's it's in its infant stages on Di Didn't I have been given a time frame as to how many? How many weeks before we've we've gathered enough Intel where we can start the kind of formulate the next steps. Have you seen them yourself? Yeah, walk up. They walked behind my yard and we've got a 35 £30 Golden doodle and she goes crazy and we know when they're back there and then, uh, The golf course is open for people to walk in the winter, and there's there's two or three of them out there as well. Yeah, I mean, I see them. I live in Deerfield literally walking down my street. I had one last winter. You know, he had a routine that every every evening. Around eight o'clock, It would come up through my backyard down my driveway. Turn on the motion light and just prance down the driveway. I mean, I feel like they're everywhere. Um, and you know, there are certainly stories about dogs being Killed and taken other than that. Is the republic menaced by these coyotes. I mean, are they do they cause other problems? Well, that's you know, that's what we're trying to find out. You know, Um, I used the example of the one that offer was a few weeks ago or a month or so ago in Chicago. That was only had three legs and it was very aggressive. So We're looking for, you know, Part of the part of the initial look is to find if there's any of these nuisance, you know, coyotes who might be injured or might be more of a threat to us than we think. You know, just the small rodents and those types things that they normally go after. So we're looking for those as well. I mean it. Z coyotes aren't going anywhere. They're indigenous. They're protected. Everything we're doing. This is sanctioned by the Department of Natural Resource is so we won't go above them beyond any of those of those rules regulations. But But, yeah, I mean, you know they certainly It's it's front and center. Now everybody's talking about him. Everybody seems to see him that social media has It's completely gone, blown up in a lot of video of, you know, walking down the street like you said, walk in people's backyards. We've got a lot of we brought her a lot of four stereos. You've got two big reservoirs out here and then we've got way border on, Dear Growth Force preserves, So we've got a lot of wooded areas here on top of what is just a normal, normal urban area. So But I don't live anywhere near the force. And they're right in my backyard everywhere. I mean, I'm a little bit older than you, but I grew up in the farm area in Kankakee County. And there were no we never saw a coyote. I mean, they just weren't around. They they've been gone, and I know a guy down there who shot 100 coyotes in his yard in one year. Um, a farmer, not a neighbor, but you mentioned that they're protected. And I just wonder why we protect them. I mean, They were suburbs that were calling dear not too long ago because there were so many dear. Why is it sort of forbidden to call the coyote heard? That would be a question for somebody at the idea in our, you know, it's not. It's not for us. We obviously have. We're home rule community. We could take certain liberties and things like that. But that's not something. We we have the power to step over anybody. So I didn't really hear department back to resource is I'm sorry, didn't realize that they were protected. Yeah. Yeah, So if they once this company gets the data in and finds out what it needs to find out, will it will trap the coyotes, or do you know what they'll do? That's the next step right? See that I have to report back to us kind of what they see. And if it's something that there's like a senator's if there's a area that's that's that's had multiple sightings of. Ah, Coyote. It doesn't look look right. Looks like he might be a little mangy might be something something wrong. It's being very aggressive. Then you know that? No, don't get the report back to us What the next steps would be from there. All right, Mayor. Thank you. Listen, how you doing through the whole pandemic? How is how are Palestine's finances? Looking Uh, not good. We just We thought we passed a budget. It's it was. It's a capital, your budget, so we passed it in very late December. It has zero increase in the tax levy. So we were able to, uh Who were down two police officers were down to fireman were about his Lena's. We can be right now. But Coleman we think Fulvio do about a $15 million hole in our box 15 $20 million hole so On top of the unfunded mandates that Springfield continues to pass like this today, I'm on top of, um, you know, on top of the pension numbers, it Z difficult. It's It's a real tough time for us, but we're going through it. You know, we're doing things that we can and making sure we provide the right services to.
