Shelby County Commissioner Britney Thornton Is Triggered by Whiteness
"Think that though some of us in our delegation have never lived a single day as a black person, though some people are not delegation have never lived a single day as a poor black person, that that should prohibit you from being able to see a clear opportunity to write some eels. And all day today, I have been pointing out how the practices of our government are disenfranchising a certain subgroup of our population, which happens to be the majority here. And I just think that when you see phenomenons like this, that just should not make sense that show a clear imbalance that we should do our due diligence to try to write those wrongs. So two commissioner meals. I own the fact that today your whiteness triggered me because it is actually an identity that I recognize postures you differently from me. It comes with privileges that I simply just do not have and every single day that you get to go in one direction and I get to go to orange mound. I noticed I noticed the differences in what those experiences are. And I bring those experiences here to say that if I'm triggered, I mean, it just is what it is, right? And if this type of reparation conversation needs to start, unfortunately in 2023, then it just needs to start, which should have already done because on my way here, I looked on the wall and I saw the very first picture of a exclusive delegation of white men on the wall for 1962, so it took some time for us to even get here to be able to create this space, had our predecessors valued it, then it would have been created a long time ago. So it is very much so unfortunate and to our dismay as a county for us to have to wait so long for us to be able to write wrongs. And this is what the racial world gap tells us. It tells us that in my lifetime and anybody's lifetime in this room and some of us combine that we would not be able to close this gap. So Huawei any longer than today,

"Judy, here's my point. We need extra liquor this week because it's a state of the union week. And listen to that orange motherfucker for an hour and 20 minutes. Oh, I loved Nancy pelo Nancy. Did we just love her? She made everything better. And then, and then do the fucking clap. Oh, I know. The papers. I just loved it. The paperwork. When she started doing Sudoku. I'm a boss, I got some shit to do. Go ahead. YouTube talking, but yeah, you keep squawking bitch. What a dick. I mean, you can tell, it's even bad when you see malaria over the years well I guess he's melanoma. Yeah, I guess he's speaking but I can't worry about it. Oh my God, there was one picture of her. She looked like one of the velociraptors. She was like, someone tweeted well, Melania looks relaxed and comfortable. She's been using the same toner that bronzer is. They become the same color. Yeah, she's the jeans too. She's orange now. She's orange brown, orange brown. Of all the lies that came out of The White House seriously? The whole, it's good genes. It's his color. Did you hear that? What did he say? Oh, he's a white hunter said his good genes are the result of his his tan, year round town as a result of good genes. Yeah.

"Yes? Yes, and I just don't see Juan Soto being traded this year. And Mike Rizzo has been pretty adamant about that. But moving forward, this is a fascinating situation. And what makes it even more fascinating and confusing is it walks photos hidden two 26. This is one of the best hitters maybe the best pure hitter in the game right now. In two 26, and he has more walks than hits. Barry Bonds in 2004 had almost a hundred more walks than hits, which was ridiculous. But when you look at the trade market and you think that Nelson Cruz of the nationals might get traded, Josh bell might get traded. And now you're left with Juan Soto, who doesn't get much to hit anyway. And it's a really strange situation. And the Nats have to figure this out as quickly as possible because if they determine, he's not coming back there. He's not going to resign. They're even at 440 million. Then they're going to have to look into training him. And how do you get equal value for a 23 year old with that kind of talent? I agree with you. I don't think you'll be traded before August 2nd, Tim, but I also don't rule anything out. When Mike Rizzo came out earlier this year and said, we're not trading one Soto. I look, Mike Rizzo, led the nationals to a championship in 2019. He's one of the best it is job in baseball. But he also is kind of like the secretary of transportation who answers to somebody else. He's ultimately not the guy who makes a decision on whether or not to give one Soto a contract of $430 million. And in the end, what Mike Rizzo said in May or early June about trading Juan Soto, he could be overruled at any time. That's the prerogative of ownership. Yes? Yes. I mean, this is going to be an ownership decision buster. I mean, you're going to spend 400 to $500 million on a player. That's going to have to come from ownership beyond anything else. But I'm going to trust Mike riz, I always do on these things. But you're right, a ownership says, hey, let's move him, then that changes the equation. I just don't think the equation is going to get changed in during this major league season. So we've got only 28 days now until Major League Baseball's trade deadline. And there's no question that a lot of what happens between now and then is going to be shaped by the standings. And it's interesting Tim. I was thinking about this over the weekend, looking at the nationally standing so much of it is shaped by the polarized nature of each league. For example, when you look at the Philadelphia affiliates right now, they don't look like a playoff team. Bryce Harper's out, they've had issues with depth in their lineup. The struggling shortstop during the course of the year in terms of identifying a long-term solution and on the other hand, when you look at the nationally, there are 6 bad teams. They say that with all due respect, but there are 6 bad teams, which means if you're the Philly's, what you're essentially involved in, if you figure that they're not going to catch the braves of the mets, is a battle for a playoff spot with like 6 other 5 other teams. It's not like they're competing against this wide swath of clubs, which is why it wouldn't surprise me if you see the Phillies ad before the trade deadline or the Texas Rangers or the Seattle Mariners, because the same dynamic, I think, exists in the American League as well. If you're one of those teams in the middle, you're not competing against a high number of teams and a lot of those teams are not dynamic, yeah, I agree about certain. I agree. I can't see the Phillies like cashing it in and saying, we're done. We're not going to make the playoffs. Not when they've had a drought like they've had. And I think there are a bunch of teams that are going to say, hey, the wild card teams are not great in either league right now. The Giants aren't giants are in trouble right now. There's three, they've lost 11 out of 14. So yes, the Phillies say we can sneak in and win a wild card if we go and get the right guys. So I'm with you on that. It should be a fascinating trade deadline because with an extra playoff team and not a lot of great teams out there, it'll be really interesting to see what happens. The team with the greatest need in my eyes, the contender with the greatest need, the Saint Louis Cardinals, who, as we've seen this season play out, they don't know what Jack flaherty is going to give them the rest of this year. They have an excellent bullpen, the makings of it at least. It seems like they have an excellent everyday lineup with so much depth, but they clearly, you know, in my opinion, and I think in the opinion of a lot of rival evaluators, they have a clear need for a front of the rotation type starter. And when you and I talked in baseball tonight on Sunday Night, I mentioned that the guy who talked a lot about with other teams and connection with the cardinals is Frankie montas, the Oakland picture, everyone assumed it was going to get be traded, at least before he came out of that Sunday start with his velocity going down. We should know more later today about what his state is. He's supposedly underwent an MRI yesterday. Maybe the athletics learned some more about him, but whether it's Montage or Luis Castillo or somebody that cardinals need in front of the rotation type guy. Do you think they're the number one team on that list in terms of what contenders need? I think they're near the top because they're pretty darn good team, but they need one more picture and with Jack flaherty's health and we're just not sure what they're going to get from him. I think Luis Castillo would be the perfect fit for the Cardinals because again, you add some of the people they've added, you've got people excited about their club and then you fall off a little bit. I think they're going to go get somebody and cassio to me is at the top of the list right now because of Montage is health issue, but still stuff is still really, really good. And that change up plays no matter no matter where he goes. Okay, sometime in the next 12 hours, we're going to be getting an email from the folks who work for asking us for this week's power rankings..

The Points League

"Yeah. Tier one. And I think that was the other thing with the $10 for marker Gonzales, because Mark Gonzalez is a streamer. Like when you spend ten bucks, like you want something that's maybe a little bit more permanent, maybe like the second to last spot on your roster, you know, someone that you can carry through more than just one start on a Sunday and you know, I don't really think Marco Gonzales fits that Bill for a contending team. So I can, I totally understand the apprehension from Tom, not wanting to make that deal. He has a lot of offensive players to choose from if he decides to sell. I don't think he needs to sell. He has enough wins banked and he could still acquire some pretty good pitching as well, where he could make a run out of it. So, you know, I don't think he's dead, but I think he's less likely to make the playoffs than some of the others. But this is still a pretty formidable team overall. The next team I have on here is probably the one that everyone likes to talk about the most on that. Everyone loves to give a shit to. That's rob crop. I will say this for rob. I had him predicted to finish 11th. He's currently in 6th. I have his power ranking is 5th. I think the one thing that rob has done really well over the past two seasons is he has figured out a way to create a stable pitching staff, if not a top three or four pitching staff and that has been the difference for him compared to many others, like he has one of the worst hitting teams in the league. Like he is third worst in the league to date offensively. And he hasn't really done much to address that. And that's probably a good thing for him because it's probably easier to acquire good hitting and he did acquire Freddie Freeman who will definitely help out, but he's going to need more and he probably needs to add one more picture, but he's going to be in the mix. And I think he's more in the mix than people would like to give him credit for. Severino, excuse me, and nola. Yeah. Those are three solid tinctures. To have in your arsenal. And you can I think you can find hitters from the bottom of the league that the people don't want to keep, that they overpay. I think you can find them for sure. Yeah. And so here's my caveat, and this was an issue that he experienced at the very beginning of the season. Rob beginning next week basically plays my four playoff teams in consecutive weeks. He's going to play me. He's going to play Johnny.

Why is he not in the movie? Why is the bond not saying a line? A roll of blade anywhere in neon. You know what? That's what they're gonna write in there right now. See, that's what you gonna be the last two minutes, and they're gonna cut him from the DVD. Come on, Joey. Come on, Jody. Hello, Jodi. Okay? Right. And you're not getting 3 million. Greg Koukl: 'The Story of Reality' Is Written for the Non-Christian
"You could just sit and talk for hours about these concepts and these realities, your book, the reality. I think this is a strength of the book in that it's a primer of sorts. It touches on the key points of theology that are central to the Christian worldview, but it does it in a way that's accessible, not only to the Christian, to the younger Christians of the older Christian who doesn't have it altogether, hasn't put all the pieces of the puzzle together in one picture, but I wrote this book constantly for the non Christian who's reading it. It's not thick with Christian lingo, it is very easygoing. It is a narrative kind of feel and no one will ever be embarrassed to give this book to their non Christians. Which is great. And again, it's much like an onion. You just keep peeling spiritual truth and it just keeps going in, right?

McAuliffe Hopes Joe Biden Can Spark Struggling Campaign
"So America, Joe Biden, you go out there and vote for Terry mccaul and Joe Biden after last night's rally. There was a, quote, rally. Let me show you a couple of pictures, put up by our friend Mac. Here is the CBS picture of the rally that the president did with Terry mcauliffe in Virginia last night. If you're watching on YouTube, you can see that picture. I don't see it yet, so maybe it's stuck in the ether. But it looks like a good crowd. You don't even think, wow, wow, the president may have more hustle than we think. Maybe he's really good at it. Then you pan out. There's the first picture. That's the CBS News picture. Then you pan out, and they've taken over one corner of one tiny park in Virginia across the river from The White House. And they basically rounded up the locals and shuffled them into maybe 300 people there. That 300 people Dwayne, do you think that's 300 people? I'm not sure that that's 300 people. But the president, though, is simply out to lunch on this stuff. Here he is, last night, talking about blend young and who has clearly got the Democrat scared to death of winning an upset that would be an earthquake in America. Cut number 17. Jesse look how he's closing his campaign. He's gone from banning a woman's right to choose to banning books written by a Pulitzer Prize and Nobel Prize winning author. Toni Morrison. So if you talk about love, by the way, which I just finished recently and he's talking about not banning books, but about allowing parents to know which books are being read in what their messages are beloved as a fine book for teenagers to read and I'm sure glad you can would agree with that. But if you have to start what you're attacking opponent is saying, then you're responding to attacks two days before an election with a weak and unpopular president in a tiny park with nobody in it. And that means Terry mcauliffe is sucking air because people don't like Joe Biden

"And it's more about The choices that people have And so the passion is showing them the choices that you have in life. What a cool way to tell that story. Another graphic novel is called Measuring Up by Lily Lama. It's about 12 year old whose family emigrates from Taiwan to Seattle and one point she enters a cooking competition to win enough money. For her grandmother to visit on her birthday. I understand that hijinks ensue. Yeah, this is this is a fun one. Um, And once your video you really want to make all of the recipes that the kids cook. Um yes, he see misses her grandmother. Ah, lot. And her grandmother 70th birthday is coming up. And the junior chef cooking competition has $1000 Grand Prize and so she enters it. But she's been cooking with her grandmother in Taiwan, but she only knows Taiwanese cooking. And during the competition, she's paired up with the daughter of a restaurant tour and Her teammate knows Italian cooking. So it's a combination of whose Cooking is better. Who's cooking? The judges to the judges want And Si si. Finds that the judges and her teammates and some of her classmates who they're really supportive, and they want her to win are sort of hesitant when she wants to cook the Asian dishes, and so she goes. To the library, of course and leather and suggests Julia Child and so she gives her cookbook, Julia Child's cookbook and shows her how to get on YouTube for the videos. And so she learned French cooking with Julia Child. And she's is that in the competition Then she always remembers that. What she's learned from her Taiwanese grandmother, and she combines them. In her dishes. What's called Measuring up by sounds really great. I want to get some one more picture book eyes that kiss in the corners by Joanna Ho. Let's listen to a little bit of it. Some people have eyes like sapphire lagoons with lashes like least trim on ball gowns sweeping their cheeks as they twirl. Big eyes long lashes. Not me. I have eyes that kiss in the corners and glow like warm tea. My eyes are just like Mama's Mama's eyes that kiss in the corners and glow like warm tea crinkle into crescent moons. She comes home from work. Got about 45 seconds left. What do you like about this book? What's special about it? I love the entire book. The well, I mean, I have Chinese eyes, little eyes. Um And the illustrations are beautiful. They still with images from Chinese culture and mythology, But he knows, um anything, any other stories, you'll find some of the characters in the background. Either as toys or speculations on the wall.

The hungarian war photographer is one of his. most famous. quotes was If you pictures on good enough you're not close enough and there's a lot to be said for that. I think i forget who said it. But there's the other saying zoom with your feet which he oh those those are some of the first quotes everybody learns and for a reason they remain profound good instruction i want to talk about one. Eight one of the other shots. 'cause meeting point is it's low key would be wrong but you know there's there's a lot of black the blue of the ocean setting off the white of the surf but you have a lot of warm tone photography as well. You have an image here that you call equinoxes dawn. Tell tell me the story of that one. And how that wound up so much different than the other one yes. I think it's a case of turn. Get the best out of whatever is in front of me this particular morning as you can see. There is very very little going on in the water. The son had just came up. This was quite recent one. This was early january sometime and the colors. The colors were lining up and thankfully that with the wet sand. You can see that reflection going on and we have the lines aligns the harba in the background and again that was probably one point six seconds and just just solve steady pan from left to right which doesn't always work when you've got sun in the sky. 'cause can work against you because you end up just with two burnt-out stripes. If you like which never looked good. It was still just a little bit of cloud just as the sun came up A new i could get away with it and yeah the colors the colors they would just you know so you don't pre imagine your work as being cool tone or warm tone is being dark or light it literally is. Let me see what this day brings. Yes yes i think if you have too much of a preconceived idea of what you're going to shoot that day you just so creating barriers for yourself really because mother nature. She's often go way different ideas to what you and you know. She's always gonna win the argument. So yeah you just have to go with the flow really and being in the uk in a whether is infamously terrible. Couple of years ago. I saw it right you know. Don't wanna stay indoors. I wanna go out. I want shoot. I wanna shoot terrible weather and show people that you know. There is beauty the storm. You don't have to hide away. Y- warm and dry. You can go out in any any. Weather's you know as as billy connolly once said. There's no such thing as bad weather. Just the wrong kind of clothing. And his right. I think now and good weather sealing on your camera to i wanna talk about one more picture and this is something personal favourite and this is the one called winter flow. And i'm looking at it right now. And i've i've been thinking all along. This is in black and white. But now i'm not entirely so sure. It's a gorgeous photograph. Gorgeous image is that actually in black and white or is that just the way that look that morning almost it s. You can see. It was overcast morning. The rule of thumb you know of the weather's terrible make wipe give it something i normally when i'm in light room pre show because i can say it's not quite black and white. What i would do is. I would click on the desaturate contrast but which takes out the majority of any color Leaves a little hint of in or one of one of the tools in light. Rumour use the most. Over would say. Well i i do want to ask about post production and whether or not you do an awful lot of it clearly. You don't set up a bunch of lights on the beach. So there's there's not an awful lot technically going on you know during the shooting. Talk to me about post-production talked me about the da's lighter or how worked are these images are have a rule will A couple of things. I know nothing whatsoever about photoshop. It comes with my adobe package opened at once. And i've seen all the buttons around the side and it just get the life. I tend to cause old school needs to shoot film etcetera and print print stuff. I think even light. I think well only going process it. As far as what i could do by hand you know back in the day. I can dodging burn. I can make it more contrasted by using the high. A grade of paper. Say i can crop it and straighten it and that is more or less. It's favorite favorite favorite button enlighten As probably the texture button that will help bring now tornado of of detail. Serve and bring image back to life. I think if he will attend to crop things old school you know. The rule of thirds oversee make sure that horizon straits. Just contrast sim my color pictures. I may apply with the saturation ball. Sometimes to take bit. How actually the clarity button. If i want something to look more dreamlike. I will actually reduce the clarity. When i'm doing online tutorials and we get to the lightroom bet you know people so quite amazed. The slight while is that you know i was. I was expecting to be tightened down notes forever. you know. there's no real need. I want to get things right in cameras much as i can. I'm not a fan of playing around with things too much to me. That's well you know it's all well and good. I've seen some very impressive results. But in a with things there's lots of layers it cetera et cetera. Just interest me too. Well and i'm glad to hear that i think personally i think the light touch is almost always the best choice one last question. I'm looking at this work and this is beautiful beautiful work if you talk the street photographers and say what is shooting shooting tension or i'm shooting contrast shooting dynamism. You know you you. You talked to resign photography about the emotion. They're trying to evoke your beach. Escapes your your images. Here really do have a strong emotional content. Talk to me a little bit more about how people responded to your work and what you hope people are seeing in your work. I mean.

"Yeah which is a little sugarcoated but Anyway fox the plug on it three weeks in the shooting and And before i left. Jim said all i tell you what. Why don't you come out to hollywood and At all hired a worth of us as hollywood giving it away. We're back to new york. I was newly married at the time. And and and got a got a car and drove out to hollywood just to sort of test. The waters see what it was like. I slept on. Jim's gyms living world tour. And i decided that's where i should be. 'cause new york was really tough. You know i didn't. I didn't know anybody there. And yeah getting into this theaters. And i was. I was looking to design for theatre and and that would have been almost impossible for me. Getting wasn't that talented. I i didn't. I didn't come with any kind of credentials. And i realized you know without harvard. Harvard degree where at least some of the work. I just didn't know anybody that i couldn't so i decided to come out the law los angeles and and and a lot of stuff worked as a production manager did kentucky fried movie as a production. I did Some good old boy driving in movies as sort of the art department said again peter later on these hundred and fifty thousand dollar movies got shown on the southern. You just do everything. There's no there's no there's no lines of what you can and cannot do get it done eventually. Migrated into doing some episode. Where did this all to forty robert. Which was jimmy. Dykes designed the the pilot. And then he didn't want to do the series. And so i took over the series and i started working episode. Tv and also doing. We had tb new. Continue doing of real real low budget features but But it interesting to this whole group of people. I did a lot of black black movies. Because at the time The the black stroke curious though cheryl's sweetheart she's the dog and and secure remember all the names but you know when the black movies come around and they'd offer them to the black decorators. The black artist didn't want to do them because they didn't want to get paid as just to a black stop. You world class talents that they wanted to do the big shows so they needed somebody to do it. And i came from the south. So i wound up doing the back. The story is actual page and And then king with with jim spencer and then Through the context. I'd met people i've met. I got hooked up with norman. Lear now haley olenin episodic thing called about palmerstown usa and it was semi autobiographical from alex about him growing up in the segregated south. Yeah i was looking into that. Because i had never heard of it but i was looking like oh. When was this on. I. i didn't. I mean i. I have never heard of it seventy and we only did the pilot and we did serve six six eight hour episodes now it but it's been it's been broadcast occasionally as sweet and i have to say it was it was it was really life changing for me. Alex was one of the best rock on tours. I'd ever met right. You can tell a story and you would be knows marrived. And i loved loved working up this glitter at this is to lead back to easy. This is this is what i wanna hear. This is what i'm in boy. So alex was really really special and so was Doorman normally lear. But i had much board dealings with alex. This show required Lots of principle sets and And it also meant that we had to build a little southern care and Which was great. We built it out at the deal. Disney ranch last week the canyon and Don't they don't have many pictures of it on. I'm be either well anyway. What happened was We had the sense that we're now call overseas studios at the time they were called air. At international and layered international was the old celtic studio and And it was a rare in that it would. There was the the old sandoval goal and lot which was in hollywood. And then the celtics studios. Which would now core city in part of sony and those were the two big independent lots were non-signatory. Lots just sort of before wallet if you come in and just rent the stages shoot whatever you wanted to. You didn't after after union signatory and We had the three largest stages for palmerstown and we had. That's where we had this goshi store. And the protagonist Says everyday sets well. Steven spielberg had come back from From shooting raiders of the lost ark in tunisia and And he had one more picture to do it. A three picture deal the was with universal and there was an impending strike so his strategy was to possibly get stay space at it independent lot and do it as a negative pickup. Continue china sweetheart. Deal of the dj went on strike it and keep production going so so he went down to look at all these stages and they took him for a tour of the three largest stages at the laird international studios and there were hats and he liked the sets and he was touring it with the guy that he hoped would shoot the movie guy. Defeating dollar and allen said yeah. These are nice and there's even room to light them. I mean. remember his a theater designer as well. Right so I got into the list of people interview back off and like your portfolio was in front of them. You didn't even have to show them anything. And also stephen at that point had jewish. Lucas lectured him and taught him out.

"Person who ever been born started with life at conception it started with with the sperm in the coming together. And conceiving every life there's no life that didn't start at conception so the every human being that has ever listened east that's where life comes from and if you don't kill it then it's going to become. It's nine months the baby will be born. It's that simple. So life starts at conception like i said we have fifty billion precedents to this and it's the same evil wicked sinister people that they know that that that a fetus is not life that are trying to tell us that we come from an explosion that we come from evolution that there is no creator so it's the same evil people giving you the same lies but unfortunately you know in the time where it says. Knowledge will be increased dax. Good in bed you know now. There's no hell each to track every human being on the planet and ship them and all the other things but also we have more biblical knowledge. We have more medical knowledge. We have dna knowledge that we didn't have one hundred years ago. So as more knowledge is coming out scientifically. it's proving more and more of creation and proving more and more than without a shadow of a doubt life starts at conception and we'll show today over and over and over exodus twenty one in verse. Twenty two and twenty one twenty two. What and when men fight and they strike a pregnant woman and her child goes forth in various injuries being fined he shall be fine as much as the husband of the woman shall put on him even he show go through the judges but injury a cup curse right injury to the fetus. That's a life you shall give life for life. The fetus is a life and if the person was fighting with a woman and injured that fetus than they would be killed. because it's life for life. I for eye tooth for tooth hand for hand foot for foot. Branding branding wound for wound. Stripe for stripe so very very clearly according to scripture a fetus is a life and even united states and maybe other countries if you kill a pregnant woman they consider it a double homicide. Because you're killing her andy unborn so even the laws prove its life. The person who did it is going to get paid for killing two lives and yet when they're talking about abortion and abortion clinics and all the sudden it's not a life anymore so i want to show you a couple of pitchers here that have very graphic so if you have small children there You may want to turn them aside. But i want to show you how to data showed doubt that a fetus is a life and show you a life of a fetus board in a life of a fetus aborted. You can see it right here so without a shadow of doubt. You see that the fetus. That was allowed to live. Like i said fifty billion times. This has happened since. Adam and eve become a beautiful little baby in his given the opportunity to have life and you see the fetus. That was aborted. That is a baby. The only difference from the top baby that was given life to the bottom baby is the by baby was never given an opportunity to live. The bottom baby was killed. It was killed. It was killed. And now jabhat willy will be in his kingdom and have the opportunity there to live in a world where things like. Killing babies is not even thought of where people can't even concept but that is the only difference between a fetus. that was allowed to live in a fetus. That wasn't i want to show you one more picture of an aborted baby head that was found in a garbage can't in houston texas. And when you look at the pay you're gonna tell me that's not a life you're gonna tell me that that's not not a baby and as we're going to see what they do with many of these awarded babies and when they have to do with the baby being still alive to get these fetal tissues in these things it is not only inhuman is an insane it is it is just it is heinous that what they would do in harm the these young unborn children. So take a look at that. And you tell me zo life were isn't it a life and it's just it's just insane that this evil sick sinister world would go on with this right and they're gonna try to help you at hitler is and how they and all these other people are and they are. It wasn't a monster. But they're no worse worse worse than it because they are normalizing it and they're trying to make it simple so let's go to subscriptions now and let's see what the always says about a fetus in mothers. Let's go to some one thirty nine. And starting in verse. Thirteen someone thirty nine starting in verse thirteen insist for you possessed my inward parts. You wove me in the womb of my mother. You wove me. That's the beautiful part of it. That life comes from your weight and it's not just that it just happens that a life comes always woven. he's making right like weaver. Does makes makes makes a piece of clothing or jacket. That's the same way that y'all way is weaving life inside the womb. I will thank you for with fearful things. I am wonderful your work so marvelous in my soul knows it very will make bones. Were not hidden from you. When i was made in secret when i was woven in the depths of the earth your i saw me as an embryo in in your book. All my members were written the days they were formed and not one was yet among them so while does lifestore if conception of of course it does you know. of course it does. And it's absolutely evil to say anything otherwise job. Thirty one in verse. Fifteen like always say. Job is the oldest book in the bible Job at least contemporary neighbor him. Maybe even right and look with job says in job.

This Week in Photo
Street Photography in New York City, with Gerard Exupery
"Back to another episode of this week and photo. I'm your host frederik van johnson today on the show got gerard exupery. He's a veteran new york city based street photographer. That knows more about street photography than than or has forgotten more about it than i probably will ever know about street photography. We're gonna dive into that a little bit as well as what. It's like shooting in and around new york city now and before pandemic all that stuff going to talk about gear all this stuff so gerard. Welcome to the show man. How's it going very well. Glad to be here. Yeah it is good to hear man. I'm excited to chat. So we've got you know. The the john mara of photography. And then this genre of let's call it of photojournalism or that that world of shooting. What's the difference. What's the difference between street photography. And that i think that in journey with photo journalism you tend to think in terms of projects. Not just one image. You know a a series of images that tell a complete story and i think with straight photography. is generally just one image. Okay okay has got to tell the story one at a time. So let let's rewind back to the time to. Let's let's do origin story thing so cue. The flashback so the origin story of girard. Where what was that moment where you knew that. Okay i feel like. I need to be taking pictures of this. This amazing city. I live in well on my planet. We didn't really have photography. And when i came to earth. And i'm sorry all right more and you know it's funny. It's the only thing i've ever wanted to do since As far back as i can remember one of my earliest memories of my father staying his role affleck's in my hand. While i took the first picture took and which was a ship underneath the verrazano bridge and it just stuck in my mind. He passed away about a year after that. And you know. I it just all these feelings about photography and loss. Let's say i don't know all came together. And i just knew that this is the direction i wanted to go. Yeah yeah and it's a good direction. It's the world photography from my standpoint on of you agree with this but it's it's equal parts. Geeky ray is we like the technology and all that stuff and then it psychology you when you're dealing with the public and trying to get the right shot or get the shot or permission to do the shot and the you know the all of this stuff in between psychology science physics wrapped up into the time machine that we call a camera to fast forward to now the president or the recent the recent present. Let's call it like this last this past five five or so years me decade your adventures in and around new york city. The i can't imagine being a street photographer. There for just an extended period of time when i'm there is overload. It's just like what. Do i take pictures of two months. It's too much going on you get analysis paralysis. What would have been some of the standout experiences you've had in city over the past decade or so that you like okay. I got to tell this bar story. Wow pick were got to pick one. I think defining Well this is. It's further back than ten years but sure for for the finding event was i was involved in a robbery and a camera store. And it's a long story but rather traumatic thing. Somebody was killed and and i got roughed up a little bit and it was it was. It wasn't pleasant. But it was. After that i i realized well putting yourself out there making yourself vulnerable and taking pictures strangers asking or you know. I don't think covertly taking pictures of people is for me. It's just not right so if you're going to ask or you're just going to be obvious bat it you've got to put yourself out and up until that point I didn't know what i was expecting to happen but After that i figured well. What's the worst that can happen. I already found out what the worst that can happen. And it really It helped me in. Maybe be taught me to be very aware of my surroundings almost in a comfortable way though. So that okay. Let's not ever forget. I've gone into situations where drug dealers on a corner. And i was taking a picture of this house that was closed and abandoned actually in patterson not beard city paterson new jersey which is really exciting. We've got a water tower waterfall. There you go and a crappy movie was made by. Jim jarmusch bad it. It lasts two years ago and any case so i am standing there taking pictures and You know. I hear this guy walking up to me and it was interesting because there were like three. Get two or three guys on each corner but not the corner i was on the house was and i'm i'm taking pictures and i hit. This guy comes up behind the camera up to my eye. And i can hear him. I'm aware of him and he said. Hey what are you doing. I told them flat out. I'm taking pictures of buildings that have been foreclosed on You know and properties that have been abandoned families that have gone kicked out. And what have you. And he goes off and you know then he goes How much do you think they want that house i should. Oh i don't know but whatever it is going to be pretty cheap

What Fresh Hell: Laughing in the Face of Motherhood
Moms Are Not Okay
"The new york times did an article. It was more. What was it. It was like a series of articles. It was yes see peace. I guess they call it. America's mothers are in crisis and it has like sort of six articles underneath one umbrella. I'll put the link in the show notes. Yeah and i thought it was interesting and it captured a lot of the stuff that we're hearing. Oh before we do that though. I want to say one other thing. Someone else talked about. Which i think is another part of this frustration. That like she's living this crazy pandemic life and her neighbors just came back from disneyworld Like there's also that whole aspect where it's like we are in this cocoon of our house traps together for a year and then on facebook. There's like friends of ours bars and we're just like we what is life. It's like all the tent poles of sanity have been pulled up and we're just kind of flailing we'll let me tell you it's really hard about that. Is you know speaking from experience or somebody close to me that the people who are going to disneyworld seemed to be fine and the people who are staying home and doing nothing like you know went to the corner wants and geico vet like covert isn't being fair on who decides to track down if you feel me yes and that is for sure and i know you realize this a completely anecdotal like experience that you're having which is not actually true like yes. People are getting cova at disneyworld and getting it. You know by trying to go to school right. That's right. It happens to all of us but the sensation when you see only the pictures of like people on vacation is like wait. Why am i in hell and these other people are like flittering around you know and it's just mentally really difficult and the new york times article focuses specifically on working moms which is another whole aspect of this. Ps all working moms hashtag. We are all working but this is like with the boss. Yes moms who work outside the home and now inside the home. That's the problem is responsibilities to a third party yet right. You're trying to work from home. And i mean it was illuminating. Hadn't really thought about one of the women is like a counselor and she's trying to have meaningful conversations with people and our kids like running around in the background. Like i mean we have you guys have heard sometimes on this podcast like one of my kids will open the door and the background i mean like what am i need but i run a parenting. Podcast just go. I'm home and my kids are here. You hear them. Yes but there's a lot of jobs really the stress of you can't have your kid in. The background is really profound. There's one picture. And i guess i'll put this in the show notes as well. The linked to the pictures you guys can see it. 'cause i seen it all over facebook. There's one photo split screen of a mom wiping toddlers but while in the next room. The dad is sitting calmly on a conference call and the mom is also on a work. Call right but it's the mom that is wiping the taller spot. While she's like trying to close a deal and the other parent is in the other room getting to act as if the pandemic doesn't exist and what bothered me about this article looking at it with any angry visit. This was very much. Phrased is a mother's problem which it is not a parental problem. Right guys problem that the toddlers at home and needs his butt wipe during a conference call because the mama handle it and this is something we've talked about a lot. And i mean we my husband and i had come to jesus moment about this at some point fairly early on which was i mean. My job is much more flexible than my husband's job. And my husband is also the primary breadwinner household right and also less lucrative right right so there are some natural kind of. What's the word like inertia things that happened. There which is like i am more available and able and his job is not quite so like a kid screaming in the background. Sorry i don't know what he's done but he's on calls with people with money already. He's tried to get it. You know whatever he's doing right. And so i understand this parameters. But i did say early on to him. Your work and his work has been understanding. Thank god some people's aren't but i said you're working needs to understand that it is not my job to create an atmosphere where the pandemic is not happening so you can continue to work as if the pandemic is not happening and i have to like as my mom would say stand on my head spit wooden nickels to make sure that everything stays peaceful in your office environment. It's not realistic. And it's not going to

"And Tommy lost. L A is really good on. He makes his team better. I mean, giants are a team. We saw it last year where they were able to mix and match with almost anybody. And maybe it wasn't star names doing it. But it sure served him well. And I think they're even better position this year to do that Same thing. I mean, I know they have a lot of moves to make on offense, and I think they're going to they're set up to have another Good offensive year with all those moves, So I like where they're sitting. I doubt it's going to be Trevor Bauer. But my guess is, you know, one more picture. What would not surprise me at all there? There could be Jake Odorizzi is a good picture. Um, you know, Easy's talented, so somebody like that would not surprise me at all. Renaissance man Dave Fleming joining us here in the Tolbert Kruger and Brooke Show. I'm still in the fellas yesterday, Dave that The sense of relief I felt when Paul Goldschmidt finally got out of the West is the exact same sense of relief. I felt when I heard about that. Nolan Aaron Auto Trade, I glad Head. Dude's gone. I know you gotta worry about the Padres and the Dodgers. But You'll have to see that Aaron out a fellow on the regular feel a bit better about that. Yeah, You know, I think it's a kind of a double edged sword right? Because he tortured us for years, But in a way, it was good baseball theater. I mean, it really was, And it was painful. Ah, lot of nights. But I I'm gonna miss him. You know, weird way like I just thought he was a great Boyle for the jazz hands. And so anyway, I wish him well in ST Louis will see him, I guess. A couple times a year, but it hasn't felt the same when Goldsmith comes back, and it's not going to feel the same one. Ah, Renato comes back and that's one where, you know. Look, the Giants were not position to make that move because of the players that they have under contract, But I can't believe There wasn't a better offer for that guy. Then the one like there's nobody else who wanted him, Maura than what the Cardinals ended up giving up. I mean, I I am just Absolutely stunned by that trade and how little they gave up and I'm happy that it wasn't somebody. I mean, either Cardinals air direct competition with the Giants, I guess, but I mean, it could have to be. It could have been even worse where he ended up. S. So do you think it's mainly do if not totally do today? Renato's contract because of it, you could see teams with money. That don't want to spend money we saw with the Red Sox. Did you know last year when when they decided they didn't want Mookie Betts because he was gonna cause too much. The Cubs after winning the world serious, they start slashing payroll. The Indians payroll believe is is less than The pirates. The Yankees, you know, have dumped a little bit of salary and they're the Yankees. Do you think Aaron autos contract Has made it to where teams are looking and going, Aziz. Good as he is, it's just not worth it from a financial sense. Yes. I mean, I think the financials are definitely what I think Everybody in baseball right now is just totally spooked by Are we going to get another year where This virus isn't going away and we don't have fans like I think teams are just so scared by Ah, year of another lost year of no fans, and it is impacting everything right now, so that has to be the explanation. But even then, I mean the Rockies air paying his salary this year. And they and they didn't get you know the prospects they got back or like not even in the cardinal's top 25 prospects like the those where those kids are on nobody's radar as future stars. And so to pay a big check going out just to get rid of your best friend. Check the best player maybe in the history of the franchise and then not get at least one Piece where you can say Okay, we got a future building block here is stunning that there isn't attend other team that could say, Hey, they're going to pay the salary this year. So worst case scenario. This year's a disaster. Next year we start a fresh and we got Nolan are not on our team. I don't get it. Yeah. Who would you if you rank him, 123? Who would you hate to see come up in a big moment. Uh, At 18 T. Coronado. Yeah, Goldschmidt when he played for the Diamondbacks. Or will Myers? Yeah, God Almighty. Yeah, well, Meyers, the guy who hit more home runs at 80 90 parts and than anybody on the giant a few years ago, a whole season play 10 games there. Uh, the guy that I feared the most was Goldschmidt when he was rolling. Because I I always just thought and are not of great. But I was Goldschmidt was that you know you get all these home runs against the Giants, But I also felt like he was the get course are not all kind of evolved into that guy too. And are not our first came up. He was doing damage, but I felt like, okay, you Sergio Romo can get him the chase that slider like you know, big spot you're going to get and I never felt that way about Goldschmidt. Thing about our nado is you know this last year aside because he struggled this last year when he was hurt, But he got better at that, too. I still go. Goldschmidt are on auto and then God, I can't believe I'm putting Wil Myers third on anywhere. That's That's how I drank him. Probably go the same way before that Myers guy who he was, he still is to joke didn't matter. It doesn't matter if he's over. 17 Dave, Dave, you know Wil Myers. We'll hit at least one home run in the Syrians. You just hope it's not more than one and you hope it's not a big one. Yeah, And it usually is more than one and it usually is a really big up guy Peppers the guy peppers the deep part of the bleachers like it's nothing. Nothing. He makes apart look small, and that's he's almost the perfect example of how I do think long term. The new ballpark dimensions are gonna help the Giants just take away Look because to me, Wil Myers was always the example of like here's ago doesn't have the scars. Of night after night here where sometimes you do get one taken away. Even Myers would have it happen, And then that starts to weigh on you a little bit, And then you get another one taken away, And I do think that builds up over time. And I think It's going to help the Giants for the future that some of those scars maybe won't be as deep because it's going to play a little more hitter friendly. I thought he was like the perfect gent. This guy's not know. Great hitter. He's no all Star. And yet he comes in here without a care in the world and sitting in for 50, right. Yeah, Somewhere. Ryan Klesko's like, Oh, now you do it real quick. Let me let me I wanted to get your thoughts on this and we're gonna run. But I want to ask you because I thought about it. I talked about this for we talked about it a couple months ago. We're talking about LeBron and how great LeBron is and how he has the longest prime in the history of athletes. I mean, his prime is spanned 17 years where he's been at the top of his game M v P type. But then Brady was 43 his prize in pretty damn good too. Now I don't know if he's is gay is good as he is. I don't know if he's been consistently is good is LeBron over that time? But maybe he has. I mean, when you think of like The longest crimes in the history of sports..

Classics for Kids
Modest Mussorgsky: Pictures at an Exhibition
"I'm Naomi Lewin welcome to classics for kids. Viktor Hartmann was a nineteenth century, Russian artist and architect and a good friend of composer mode as his ski. When Hartman died suddenly at the age of thirty nine was dark ski was devastated. Hartman's friends organized a memorial exhibit of his work, and then resort ski created his own tribute to Hartman a piano piece that portrayed ten artworks from the show called pictures at an exhibition. Quite, a few people have made orchestra versions of pictures at an exhibition. The best known one is by Maurice, Richard. Pictures at an exhibition starts off with that promenade which pops up several more times. Zarzusky meant it as strolling music to lead you through the gallery from one picture to the next. The first picture in Zork Skis Exhibition is a gnome actually it's a sketch for a nutcracker shaped like gnome sort of a Goblin who lives under the earth. then. The promenade leads to a painting of a very old castle from medieval times with a troubadour traveling singer outside it in reveals orchestration the saxophone is the instrument that plays the part of the troubadour. From there we promenade onto a picture of a nanny taking care of some kids playing in the twee gardens in Paris. Doesn't it sound like they're teasing each other and? Yeah Yeah. No promenade before the next picture, which is of a wagon with huge wheels the kind of wagon that was pulled by oxen. The title of the picture is bid low, which is Polish for Oscar. After the last of the promenades we come to the ballet of the unhatched chicks. Victor Hartman's designed for some ballet costumes in his sketch to people where egg outfits with bird head helmets but I think the music sounds more like they're running around like chickens with their heads cut off. Next to that picture repair of Pencil sketches of a rich man and a poor man, the rich one sounds pretty snooty. Roll. Along. In the poor man sounds like he's crying. Back to France for the next. Women Gossiping in the marketplace in the town of Moses. Then a couple of very creepy scenes I some catacombs, underground tombs full of old bones. It almost sounds like they're about to get up and walk around to the promenade tune doesn't it? The next bit creepy nece is a sketch for clock based on an old Russian fairy tale about a witch named Baba Yoga who supposedly lives in a scary hut that's perched on fouls or chickens legs. The very last picture in the exhibition is the designed Viktor. Hartmann entered in a competition to build a gate that would be the grand entrance to the city, of Kiev. If, the great gate of Kiev theme reminds you of the promenade. Now, you know where that strolling music was edited all along.

Bill O'Brien: Head coach fired by Houston Texans
"Coach Bill O'Brien has gone from the Houston Texans and nobody can say they're surprised last January. He had his team up twenty four nothing over the chiefs in the playoffs then got outscored fifty one to seven. But as a coach O'Brien can at least say he won four division champions in six years. It's as a GM that he made. You scratch your head in one year he traded former number one picture Davey clowney to Seattle he traded two first round picks a second round pick for Laremy Tunsil and Kenny stills and the whopper of the mall. He traded the Andre Hopkins to Arizona for running back David Johnson as of now. Johnson is thirty seventh in the League in rushing and Hopkins leads the NFL in receiving. Yeah. That'll get you fired but not as fast as an oh four start despite having to Shawn Watson and Jj Watt on your team a heated argument with what may have been the last straw for O'Brien. Then again, have you ever stood next to Jj watt they can't say O'Brien doesn't have courage. He just doesn't have a job anymore.

Trump Sends Well Wishes to Ghislaine Maxwell
"In our politics lead now. Even some trump republicans trump supporting Republicans expressed outrage yesterday when President trump extended well-wishes to Glenn Maxwell Maxwell has been charged with conspiring with the now dead pedophile. Jeffrey Epstein to Sexually Abuse Teenage Girls. Trump and maxwell have been photographed together, but in an interview with CNN another former Epstein business partner said that the two knew each other well as C.. N. N.'s Pamela Brown reports for us now. President Trump's return to the briefing room took an unexpected turn with his response to a question about g Lane Maxwell arrested earlier this month on multiple charges related the sexual abuse of. Girls by her longtime companion convicted sex offender. Jeffrey! Epstein she has pleaded not guilty. I haven't really been following it too much i. just wish your well. Frankly the warm wishes for Maxwell are bringing renewed scrutiny to trump's relationship with her and Epstein who government officials say died by suicide in his jail cell last year after being charged with sex trafficking, some Republican lawmakers reacted to trump's comments on twitter. Saying this is unacceptably obtuse for a woman accused of the most morally depraved of crimes, and she is despicable and he needs to. To say that I've met her numerous times over the years especially since I lived in Palm. Beach and I guess they lived in Palm Beach but I wish her well whatever it is. Trump says he's known Epstein. Since the late eighties and pictures from the ninety show the president with Maxwell who became Epstein girlfriend associate, and allegedly his madame, one picture shows trump with maxwell and nineteen ninety-seven, then again in early two thousand at trump's palm beach property mar-a-lago with his wife. Melania, and Epstein another picture shows trump with maxwell. At New York fashion show, and then again with model Naomi Campbell epsteins one time business partner Steven Hoffenberg who's been eighteen years in jail for a Ponzi scheme told CNN today. There's no dispute. They knew each other well adding he liked her, and she liked him and a two thousand two interview with New, York, magazine, trump showered praise on Epstein, calling him quote terrific guy and saying he's a lot of fun to be with. It is even said he likes beautiful women as much as I and many of them are on the younger side. After I've seen was arrested last year. Trump had a different tune claiming he kicked Epstein now. Go years before. He was a fixture in Palm Beach. I had a falling out with them a long time ago. I don't think I've spoken to him for fifteen years I wasn't a fan. Prosecutors say Maxwell went into hiding over the last year as more victims came forward, alleging she learned them in and groom them to be sexually abused by Epstein alleged victim. Virginia Jufri has claimed Maxwell recruited her in one, thousand, nine, hundred, ninety nine, while she was a locker room attendant at trump's mar-a-lago resort, though she never alleged any wrongdoing by the president. And Jake. The comments at the president made about Maxwell caught some White House officials off guard now. He is expected to brief again shortly, so we'll see if he addresses this then.

Big tech companies back away from selling facial recognition to police
"Big companies are saying they're not gonNA make facial recognition technology so just the quick rundown IBM announced it's no longer offer, develop or research facial recognition technology. There's some important caveats that Amazon has banned the police from using its. Facial recognition system called recognition for the next year. Which is the other caveat? Internally. Microsoft, which is sort of talked about this? A lot has said we will not sell facial recognition to the police. Insult Congress Passes Privacy Law. Another caveat they're all caveated announcements, but. Just before we started recording, I was saying you do not see a technology at this stage of development. Halted in any way because of social concerns, so walk us through what's happening? Obviously in the context of black lives matter the protests, but walk us through what is going on anouncements and how they work? Yeah, I mean so I. Think something that I definitely want to highlight up. Top is the history of criticism of these systems which goes back years, and there's a few researchers particularly enjoyable Weenie Timmy Gebru who, in two thousand, eighteen published a paper called gender shades. which they really sort of provided the first comprehensive empirical evidence that there are racial and gender bias with these systems, so that's been alone of criticism that's been picked up. Push forward by people like the ACLU. Now obviously with protests across America and greater scrutiny on. Police and law enforcement in January that's now pushed out to the four, but these criticisms go back years, so it's really important that they're now. Being taught about an action is happening as you said, there's been three announcements IBM on Monday Amazon Wednesday, Marcus often Thursday, but each of them deserves different caveats. Amazon Microsoft announcements obviously goes together because they're going for a twelve month. Ban and IBM's goes in a different slot. Because they're saying we're going to stop doing this. Totally however I would say. I've been desperately trying to get IBM to answer some specific questions. About the scope of this band and they have been very unhelpful. You both will have experienced this before when you go. Okay, so I have a little question here, and just like a yes, or no answer. And how do you feel about giving that? Go? James We've written a blog post. Just like to read the blog posts. Donald explain everything and. Post but I had some questions about the blog post and they will not. Have you really read the? Anyway. For a company who who make software that claims to like understand the of human knowledge, and is able to like actually literally debate you. The inability to engage in a discussion about its products is fascinating. Maybe you're actually talking to their debate. Ai and not to real human. Oh, my God yeah, it turns out. Watson sucks. It only generates blog posts with ambiguous claims. And cannot answer a follow up so James Real quick just give us a brief intro. How does facial recognition work so facial recognition is based on machine learning. which is sort of technology that looks for patterns in large data sets, and then tries to predict or find those patterns elsewhere. In this case, the patterns it's looking for our measurements based on your face now there's lots of different ways that these algorithms work, but basically they're looking for say the distances between certain landmark features on your face that could be the distance between your eyes from your nostrils to the tip of your mouth between your eyebrows all. All those sorts of things so they will be scanning faces. They will be measuring those little points, and then they will be comparing them to a database. There's different ways that could happen. You might be doing a one, too many find where you have a face that you've say record on TV and you're looking for it in a big watch list of people, or it might be a one to one thing which is what happens at a passport. Border check where you have one picture one face, and you're just looking to see if there are match or not, those technologies are implemented in very various ways. You know some people use them to pull footage from TV that they analyze later. Some do live TV stuff that's happened in London for example and somewhat to integrate them onto body cameras as well so there's a lot of different ways is coming up, but you're basically getting an algorithm that looks at your face and looks to see if it matches another. Let's start at the top right. There is the gender shades paper. There is this just enormous body of evidence that. Facial recognition systems are biased against gender and race. Just unpack that a little bit, and what does that actually mean in practice for people? What should people understand about that? So that means that the same? System when it's looking at a white face when it's looking in the face of a person of color. It is going to be just less accurate when it comes to matching identities when it comes to just simply saying say what gender, it thinks that person is these algorithms consistently get lowest scores for non white faces. It's really as simple as that. The huge terrifying scary things is when you think about how those judgments then going to be used by people with power over your life, whether that's the law enforcement, or whether that's a private company. Many of whom are buying these systems and integrating them say into a watch list for the shop, and they are going to start going well system says your on our. Nautilus, and you can't come into the shop and you know what recourse you have in a scenario right, so I always think of this in terms of the TSA. A Brown man who regularly travels the bag, full batteries and wires I have many interactions with the TSA, but I'm in the airport.

The Pandemic Cut Down Car Traffic. Why Not Air Pollution?
"So there was definitely one picture but I remember seeing a freeway in Los Angeles arguably the traffic capital of the United States and there were no cars. It was like empty for your way clear blue sky and now you came here on this podcast and you're taking that all away from me. Well actually the air was cleaner in Los Angeles in March. It was the longest stretch of cleaner that had been recorded in decades. And you know that's a big deal for la because there is not great. Sometimes there's high levels of ozone Which is a pollutant that sworn by all the that comes out of tail pipes and smokestacks and power plants? What it does is it. It mixes in the air ground level. You add some sunlight and you've got ozone and it's not good stuff it exacerbates respiratory and cardiovascular illness so it makes sense that everybody would be pretty psyched about cleaner air. Yeah and it seemed like that made sense right with all the lockdown and people staying at home. I mean they started asking the air regulators about that like Philip fine of the South Coast Air Quality Management district through a lot of pressure on us to come up with the answer that everyone wanted to hear which the is that the covid nineteen measures have cleaned the air and southern California. But here's the thing it was also really Ramey in. La During the same time and rain helps clear out the air so as the weather is dried out. Recently air quality has gotten worse again. I mean went back to the unhealthy. Category actually yeah. Okay so I guess when you think about. There was this forty percent reduction in traffic and only a fifteen or so decrease in ozone in lots of parts of the country. It's not nothing right like not much. Not A ain't nothin' yeah. It certainly helped some but you know believe it or not sound kind of strange cars are not. La's biggest source of pollution comes to the pollutants that make ozone And that's actually true in a lot of places in the US Which is fine told me that means what's happening. Now with reducing car traffic just enough read a lot of newspaper articles over the past couple weeks decided if only we can have people telecommute one day a week across the entire base in our air quality problems will be solved and unfortunately it's not that simple. That's because the big source in La is trucks A reason is because there's just a lot of shipping that comes through the ports of L. A. and Long Beach and they handle about thirty percent of the country's shipping container traffic and that gets moved around on trucks after it comes in so traffic. It didn't decrease as much as the car. Traffic did so that pollution was still being omitted. Okay so trucks are the problem in La. Becky would about places yet so other places have other pollution sources like Pittsburgh. We looked at Pittsburgh and ozone only felt by nine percent about between mid-march and the end of April and when I asked atmospheric chemists about this they were like the reason is coal. Oh the Col- cold. It's burned to make electricity primarily but also call. It's used to make steel right. The history of Pittsburgh is all about steel scar. Have some very active industrial sources near the city in this kind of at the University of Pittsburgh? Emily Elliott says Cole is really dirty work in closer proximity to the places that are generating power coal fired power plants in the Ohio River valley that contribute quite a bit to pollution. Okay Sup- Pittsburgh has coal. La Trucks anything else. I should know about. Yeah Houston has this thing with factories. Oh Right Rebecca Hersher. We've talked about that on the show before indeed. We have and for those who might not remember Houston has one of the largest concentrations of petrochemical facilities in the country so to see how ozone levels have changed their versus other places. That was an interesting question for us. And what we found. Is that those facilities. They mostly kept operating during the pandemic actually in fact a lot of them they make the raw materials for masks and gloves the PCP hospitals need so desperately right now. So I'm guessing that ozone levels decrease a lot in Houston exactly ozone decrease less in Houston than did in La okay so it sounds like industrial pollution versus pollution from our like. Private cars is a big deal. Are Scientists looking into that? Becky like how much industry plays into this. Yeah they are. And it's possible that the overall air chemistry has also changed when we remove cars from the picture which is kind of an intriguing idea like air pollution is kind of a soup of different chemicals and bits and that soup is different now. And there's something even more confusing that happens with that soup that Air Chemistry and this is really strange to stay with me. This is really strange. So say with me as actually sure. We've tagline so go ahead you're at home. Will we mention that stuff coming out of tail? Pipes and other sources is what makes ozone rates that stuff is nitrogen oxide so nitrogen. Oxides helped form ozone. But here's where it gets weird under some conditions you know. In the short term nitrogen oxides can break down ozone molecules

Exploring the galaxy with radio astronomy
"What do you guys do day to day? Are you both doing Strana me basically day-to-day or code for astronomy me. Pretty much I mean. Most of my work is helping. Mohawk or storm is do things faster so every time for a group who were doing some multiple web it was taking full t two days to do something they then pasta over to us. We go down to eighteen hours. That's awesome that means you can do so much more science right. But as a classic divide and conquer problem at paralyzed line matt talks embarrassingly parallel and we Scott Shaw. We don't really do gathering till the very end Bassett. I see so. It's almost like you can almost do individual computation on a per pixel basis maybe the equivalent of a per pixel basis. We tench Wilkin Frequency Channel. Molden GAY but yes so. We would just purchase one particular or one of frequencies on one machine depend on another number on another world. Do quite a bit of machine learning. What Tech Team are affi- application wage doing corrections actually now moving? Some of our struggle me work into oceanwave investigations and transit or whether we can correct the swell so there's no way there's going to be a good idea right. Okay now. That would be a really unexpected consequence or outcome or capability from studying. Gravitational waves is better surf. Predictions obligation state has different quicken small. Yeah I guess so. Yeah the whole gravitational wave detection stuff is some pretty cutting edge science and it's really interesting and it's cool that you're using machine learning to try to understand that we have a smoke group working on it. We've got ten inches in the pump detectors. This is a very active area of research. There's a lot of groups around the world working on. Yeah I think it's kind of amazing. There's a Lotta stuff with gravity oriented things in astronomy right now. We have the gravitational wave detection for the Clintons Black Holes. We have the first picture of black holes in the last year and a half or so whenever that was going on around their medical field teaching. Sure I guess. If you're already university eventually you might end up. Interacting with a student or two very cool. All right Rodriguez. What about you got kind of similar? I on personal rights became evolving stormy. So I help a summer through the software in different languages for different purposes. Sunil only for me but also for Analysts form we also am theoretical group so people who simulations formation such so all over the place on we only me about all the people in the group we specialize comes kind of in this area of killing. Romans? Lloyd's mice also. On how much do you end up helping them with? Standard Software Engineering. Things like Hey. I need to teach you source control. This is get hub. Let spend an hour talking about that or are they pretty much. Good to go. The generation older durations. Aw It'd be harder to kind of move to sign a newer people like Jonker people come with all those concepts. Serie Computing Rights. They never give ray there so do help to push that. Far East most multi on their Meghan this offer the same side of thanks Entitled Opportune Opponent. How you organize it. Codes optimize things for the particular architecture on someone Okay cool and you're also working on this S. K. A. Construction the square kilometer array. Just this whole topic. I guess we'll talk more audits later. By one of the main institutions that are working on the square kilometer array yet. So it's interesting. I don't know if it's works for light. But it does for radio that if you put multiple detectors and sort of densely but not actually connected at one giant and tanner something you can put that together like a bigger detector right bigger lens in the radio world. So that's the idea right. Just that's exactly Gaskell interferometry you basically if you got three on tennis. Abc Do you do. Is You take measurements in the from from BSE. And then you correlate every repair so to correlate the from be from being from Do that correlates are. Which is the one voice doing all this mixing signals and out goes one correlated thing though which is as if you have one big content. So that's what happens in Vegas for me. I think I'm not sure by up to college. You can also from A to B. But I'm not sure how the kind of work in the science cool so this. Esca project is the square kilometer array which is International Project. That you all are working. On involving thirteen countries that are full members of the project in the Or others who are just participating right. Yeah that's right is the collecting. Because you know we're we're starting to run out of things off the screen. Where do we generally collecting area system is now missing in spite of the fun telescope which means belting countries so the life frequency components coming up to Western Australia and the Frequencies Gang South Africa? So they'll be speaking meat dishes in South Africa. I'm one hundred. One hundred and seventy two and ten is Western Australia so called Com fifty million euros just for the the first one. I don't know a hundred and thirty one thousand antennas bringing all this data. That is a huge amount of antennas. And it's your Joe decombis second five hundred fifty gigabytes a second. I don't really have a great way to understand that number. Honestly like you gotTa think of large cloud services like youtube or Netflix. Or something like that right and we say no orange them. Visualize it if you take your you know your how drives your five hundred heart ripe under throw it and you throw one of those second right. Yeah that's a lot of data also takes a lot of power right. Yeah that's one of the the the key things because we we would like Green as possible but we go cap on the moment to make a wall system on the planet. So that's still a challenge. We have to address. Yeah you almost need your own power plant. Tell me how much somebody call the ready down. Okay is it the blades that generate? Rfi Or is it the generators that generate. Yeah yeah
