"Is today's ION Travel Minute. It's Saturday July 22nd welcome into WTOP. You're with Dean Lane. At 1228 traffic and weather on the 8th, and burgers in the WTOP traffic center. If you find yourself on the Beltway loop at northwest of town be prepared for a solid delay. This is because of the paving operations. Three right lanes are blocked on the outer between the George Washington Parkway and the Georgetown Pike. The slowing starts prior to River Road and once you cross the bridge it does pick up just a little bit but it's going to take you a little while to get through that scene. There was the work zone being set up on the inner loop north of Old Dominion Tribe but it looks like that has been taken away right lane is open. The accident on the outer on the approach to the Eisenhower Avenue connector has cleared with no delays either side of the beltway between Springfield and the Wilson Bridge. Got the roadwork affecting both directions of 395 at or near the Little River Turnpike. This is bridge work so all lanes both sides are mobile alternate and enclosures. Roadway down to one lane northbound 395 that work zone between Washington Boulevard and 110 looks to be cleared however the ramp from southbound 395 to Washington Boulevard that still has some on work it. Also the roadway down to one lane on southbound Anacostia freeway DC 295 at Capitol East Street and this is causing some congestion south of Burroughs Avenue. Traffic and weather on the 8th over to Kinberger this morning with us in the WTOP traffic center. thank you dean good morning everyone still have that major accident working on the capital beltway the outer loop south of the george tom pakin in mclean the left center lane right center lane right lane and the right shoulder all blocked so that means stay over to the far left side only one lane is open as you make your way south of the legion bridge heading into virginia it's a slow roll past the accident scene but light enough i am in traffic so the delays aren't all that bad and once you clear the accident scene on the outer loop you'll find nothing to hinder your ride all way the past the springfield interchange and heading over to the wilson bridge in maryland things will concur to both loops the beltway all lanes are clear no active accidents or work zones reported the crash on northbound 100 at northbound 95 up in a montgomery RPG county has cleared however in in Anne Arundel county still have that crash on the ramp from 295 northbound to inbound or eastbound 195 getting to the airport bwy and that is causing some congestion otherwise the ride up up and down 95 and 295 between the two beltways looking okay not seeing any delays on 270 in Montgomery County between Bethesda and Frederick and heading back I'm Ken Berger WTOP traffic areas of patchy fog here early this morning to slow your drive but at least the rain is over for now that is the next weather maker will bring rain to the area Saturday evening and Sunday temperatures this morning

After the rosalyn tunnel, bridge deck repair over the spout run Parkway has the left side getting by before and after the beltway and between route one 23 and route 50, the left lane getting by and the workshops set up between routes 28 Centreville and route 29 had two left lanes getting by, works on eastbound near route 50 has been picked up and worked east after the roslyn tunnel has the right lane getting by. Let's head over to Maryland quickly quickly. Route 50 west on the bay bridge still shut down with the work zone two way traffic on the eastbound span overhead sign repair along the way. And authorities have found the issue on the envelope near kenworth avenue, lots of police and fire department crews blocking that ramp to kenworth avenue from the inner loop. Northbound on the George Washington Parkway, no delays heading to the beltway. Lest weaving at the beltway because the reversible lane only takes you to the outer loop and the right lane northbound only takes you to the interloop, but for drivers who need to go to Maryland in the ITER loop, they need to be in that right lane well earlier than usual and this new traffic pattern will be in place for the next couple of years. So get used to it. 66 westbound heavy from the beltway to one 23 and again through centerville. Eastbound traffic is slow toward Boston into Arlington. Volume delays in the beltway, outer live slow road to gallows road, interleukin slow from the dullest hole road into Montgomery county. Route 7 westbound slow from route 28, past lands down boulevard, had a crash along the far right side, one went off into the trees, Burke Lake road, southbound near the first Burke road intersection, crash and police direction. In Maryland on river road, it should be a work zone near or west of little false Parkway bringing traffic down to single file and the work zone in Bethesda old Georgetown road northbound north beltway is water main related one lane is getting by two 70 northbound some slowing in several stretches through and out of Montgomery county just volume on two 70 and 15 in Frederick, 70 eastbound between boonesborough and the south mount rest area. When will the West Seattle Bridge be fixed, and how much will it cost?
"Has been nearly a year since the West Seattle Bridge closed down because of the cracking concrete, and now we're getting some prediction on when it might be open again. Here's Chris Sullivan, and that prediction is the end of June 2022 that is the target goal for returning traffic to the West Seattle Bridge, But that's about a space Civic is the city can be. I would like to be very, very specific about the time and date when you will be able to drive across the bridge. I cannot give that to you today that Seattle's mobility director, Heather Marks, who also also cautions West Seattle residents that include herself that even when the repairs are complete, that doesn't necessarily mean the traffic is going to immediately return. This is not a repair where we're just going to drop tools when we're done and open up the bridge, too. Traffic. We want to make sure that this is safe and we want to be able to measure and see how the bridge and the repairs respond to additional live load. Drivers should expect that the lanes to will open little by little over the days and weeks after repairs are complete, primarily just for safety and to prevent backups. And there's a big push right now to allow people who need life saving medical care like chemotherapy or dialysis to use the bridge, but The problem is Terminal five, is going to reopen for business on Harbor Island next year. And so the city is worried that if they allow more access now, they'll have to take it away later and they don't want to do that. They don't want to carry that. Briscoe start opening a lot more. We'll be exactly because they're going to see significant amount of freight traffic. And because of that, they're going to see the capacity go away. As for the money, the dollar figures in all of this $175 million is the budget. That covers the repairs to the West Seattle Bridge. The lower Spokane Street Bridge also includes the money already spent for the showing process, traffic mitigation improvements being made in West Seattle. The monitoring work city already has about 124 million of that, and it's aggressively looking for Mawr's, according to Sam, Zimbabwe, the head of the Transportation Department. We're moving are a lot of different paths forward. We don't project that funding is going to be the challenge that Holds us up in this, but we still have some some fresh holds across and make sure that we have the resources needed to bring this resource back online.

Historic Covered Bridge Linking New Hampshire, Vermont To Undergo Repairs
"Repairs or planned to start next month on a historic covered bridge between the Granite State and Vermont. This week in the middle of Pandemic when this is happening, but also just like the health implications of constant trauma, and I just had a really I'm from privilege, and I'm having problems with this, so I'm going to get your thoughts i. Because of the murder of George. Floyd also because of the murder of Brianna Taylor, because I'm not of Tony mcdaid that. We are living in witnessing. Like my sector, like philanthropy is often at the edges on not willing to be abolitionist, not willing to call on not only police accountability, imagining supporting organizers in leaders in our communities to imagine a world where detention and incarceration and policing aren't the only ways that we resolve the issues that we have with each other. and on the other side you know we really quickly as an institution, we put out. You've mentioned. Detention jails, and how this is how society is just not getting it especially now, especially during covert so. How do you begin to connect it all? Yeah, you know philanthropy is really weird, and on the one side I am clear that philanthropy isn't. Better of a functioning democracy and are robust and fare economy right that philanthropy exists mostly because he's our tax dollars that are not. That are awarded. And rich people, and then they're rich institutions get to be the arbiters of who is deserving of resources in a moment. What ideas are deserving of being lifted up? What leaders should be resourced, right? I. I I am clear that I'm like in A. that. I'm holding contradiction right that I believe in a functioning stage with the safety net that taxes are most. Wealthy at the benefit of all of us and I work at an institution that as as been created because of these failures and. I think that. Many of my peers in philanthropy have given up. The ability to actually contest for power to use these positions and the resources that we have Julio. We are one institution right? We have seven hundred over seven hundred million dollars in an endowment. That we get to us not only to try to supplant government or take the place of government, not only to create a band aid on the cancer that our communities are facing. We can use these resources to support leaders organizations to start to create evidence that our families can be more powerful to start to create evidence that our government can actually for us that it could be more responsive than it can look like us. That I can talk and feel like us. We can create evidence that our economy doesn't have to work only at the expense of our most vulnerable workers right. We've been doing this thing for one hundred fifty years at this point in time there are quite a bit of things that just are not new and some of that is complaining about too many bowl games but another one of those things is talking about how coaching salaries are way too high. I mean it's it's it has quite literally almost almost always been like this. I mean Amos Alonzo Stagg at Chicago making six thousand dollars in eighteen eighteen ninety two now I went back and use the consumer price report and price some of these salaries out in you know twenty eighteen at the time buying power. And you know. That's six thousand dollars. Amazon does stag was making then was worth like a hundred and sixty thousand dollars back in eighteen. Ninety two there has always been this separation between what highly paid college. Football coaches made Versus what the Common Man Colombian mix. You know I'll I'll bring it to your audience and hit them home like bear Bryant when he's doing. That money has to go somewhere now. That money goes to beyond coaching salaries. I mean that's the facilities race that is everything. Everything that makes these college will programs at opulent as they can be obviously a really really big part of the PIE now. Is Coaching salaries. Now Coaching coaching salaries the early eighties. That's stuff starts to get reported. That's my really really starts coming into Coming into the sport in a way that it had really really before that By the time you get through the mid nineties Florida's paying Steve Spurrier the one of the first billion dollar contracts so that he doesn't jump to the NFL at that time honestly the NFL itself explodes. You've got that competition. So it's it's the competition that that spurs in any industry the street Salaries and money and will lose those things but the early eighties. Like these guys make guys and girls make six figures seven figures. There is a lot of money in higher education in the United States at the highest levels. college athletics is it is not an outlander But like studies have shown time and time again going back thirty forty fifty years that when your football all team is good when your basketball team is good It becomes you know they always say that is the front porch of the university. Admissions skyrocket when athletics. Do well and that is. Why a lot of these University of course than anything else I think? Put Up with and we'll pay out the nose for Nick Sabin or Jim Harbaugh or a Davos. We or whatever I think the dirty secret is is the weight from Ro a lot of these endowments in some of these very popular. Schools would shrink a lot more than people wanNA realize. No I mean just look around. I mean boone pickens. She died recently. I mean the the amount of money that he put into Oklahoma state and I don't I don't mean to disparage Oklahoma state in stillwater Oklahoma. Oh my been there. And if you haven't Richard Make sure that you put that on your bucket list. Wouldn't it wouldn't have had that type of money And and a lot of these Jerry Jones. He's given to the University of Arkansas. You can go down the list And I mean and it's because of one thing we're trying to win in in in college football or basketball depending on on on where you live and what part of the country you're in. Yeah absolutely I saw a stew. MANDL's works in the for pretty athletic. He He has a college pat column and somebody asked him Ten million dollars. What would you do with it to build a staff? And I look the question and I was like look man if you WANNA compete with Alabama Lsu Clemson Oklahoma Ohio state. You need more your salary. You Pool has to be bigger than ten million dollars. I mean on on its face. You'RE GONNA have to pay a coach at that level. Five five and a half six six billion dollars. You'RE GONNA have to pay your coordinators eight hundred nine hundred thousand dollars because Dave Aranda was was pulling such a salaried Lsu a few atmosphere necessarily because he was such town defensive coordinator which he is but it was because one opinions coordinator so that the only job job they'll leave for is a G. Five or or power five kids coaching job. It's got bulletproof coordinators. I WANNA lose them. I don't want to take collateral. If they leave me they gotta take step up so okay. You're paying both your coordinators Like one point eight billion dollars between the two. That's like eight million dollars. Just gone to the head coach in coordinators. Now you're in another like five million dollars higher director staff your eight assistant coaches which is all right. That's your ten assistant coaches You want to compete with Georgia Alabama. "All right so this is your second time with the pot getting our concern Osama veteran okay known at the table. No crunchy snacks crunchy snacks. No no shaking of the coffee ice loud. There are months where like weeks will go by. We're I'm like how am I literally. Don't know where your I will not have seen you for two weeks. Yeah that is basically the story of my life. Sometimes I don't even know where I am. I'll wake up hotel. Mike Oh yeah no. I'm in Appleton Wisconsin. Oh No oh now I'm in San Antonio Texas. Yeah I mean we talk about a few issues in your job in general but in our travel issue that came on May so you you shot almost the entire feature will yeah does may two thousand nineteen you were in Beirut with Andy Burgundy tracked and then you I'm just flip through the pages then you were in Taipei with Suli and also burgundy and Andy any wanted to tag on everything so that was a big photo portfolio of yours your shot in Allison Rome in spring break menu story that was just in New York yeah that was here in the building the buildings that was as basic recipe story and then you shot photos for our red sauce America package which brought you. Where did you go for this one? Oh man that was a lot. I think that was six cities L. A. L. A. Philly New Orleans. Oh my God. Where did I go? I mean you literally can't remember yeah I it was like four to five cities. I guess my first question is I think a lot of fans of yours. WanNa know like how do you end up as a staff dog for at a food magazine like whenever someone asked me about this is I'm the worst possible personnel asked because it's purely luck and circumstance stance and my only goal and still the only like hey just don't get fired and spend closing up on your six and I still get asked to come back every day and there were definitely moments early on we're Alex pollick grocer artificial photo department critic Blake. I'M GONNA kill Lau a huge mistake so you start off as an intern turn years ago yeah. That's my freshman year of college. I just wanted to do something with my life and not just go home for the summer to California and you know Oh bummer and my parents house so I wanted to find an internship and I've always had a fascination with the magazine world apply too much internships. Nobody got got back to me in like a week. Before summer started. I saw a posting for esquire magazine to be a fashion closet intern. Oh and I was like that sounds cool. That sounds way out of my reach. I am hugely under qualified for that but I'M GONNA shoot my shot and Michael Steph. who was the fashion assistant at the time got back to me? He's like when can you come in based on what oh it. Did you have background. It was the most underqualified letter ever. It was basically hey. Here's my resume. I was a lifeguard in high school. I was a high school tutor and I intern at the State House in Massachusetts in politics nothing related to magazines but I really love menswear and here's like my favorite menswear blogs and here's my favorite brands brand's. I like fashion. I can work hard and he got back to me. Can I just say that. I am a lot of times when I talked to young people who are just out of college in their writing you you know letters to inquire about a job and they read like they're written by a law firm. I'm always like learning be yourself. Be passionate sort of expose yourself so to speak but that's what's GonNa grab some somebody's attention one hundred. I think the way I showed her. The letter wasn't like the formerly hi my name's dogs home. Hey My name's Alex. I'm really excited about this. I know him not meant for this Gig but I will do whatever it takes gap and so forth and they took a chance on me and that kind of was my segue into the New York City magazine publishing world and it turns out having square on your resume. Just opens opens up a lot of doors but it was great. It was just my eighteen years old. I didn't get paid but I got to see how magazines work I've got to be on fashion shoots Justin Timberlake Lake and Ryan Gosling and wow poll like hold fourteen thousand dollar jackets and look it Nick Sullivan whose whose the editor in chief at the time Grainger David David David grange just like talk shop and like this is amazing. This is legendary and that made me really WANNA stick with it yeah very recall okay so internship at esquire. How then does that lead you to be a so after that? I was convinced that I wanted to stay in publishing. Look fashion. menswear ended up at Nylon guys Juku for a little bit complex four pins so I was very very much in that circuit as an intern just doing minimal intern work but after a couple of years I was just like this is not really what's my angle here. I don't WANNA be stylus. I don't WanNa be a fashion writer. The idea of being a photographer and fashion was just you know. I didn't even sit down. That's not going to happen so after this is my third yes approaching my third year of college. I A Internet a bunch of or apply uh-huh bunch of other internships again. Nobody got back to me. Despite actually this I'm being off and having a lot of magazines in Monroe oster I applied to like yeah a a couple of mags won't be noted but they're they're. They're okay. They just get back. I mean I saw a posting for bone apetite photo internship and I was like I know nothing nothing about food. I like pictures. I took photo classes in high school and college. So how active a photographer were you at this point. It's like I'm not active. I don't know I took a lot of fissures in high school. I had my own flicker account. I you were you were you were definitely interested. We're sitting at least and I took pictures of the school paper and stuff like that. I I was a you know an avid hobbyist as major so do you did you come in an interview like what God you the job ultimately so I went in again. It's always like a last minute. Call in showed up from Boston and I met with Jake. Ramoser are former photo assistant and he he gave me a talk. Hey so turn yeah. It looks like you've worked a lot of magazines. you have zero photo experience and you have zero food experience so you're pretty underqualified but honestly the only person here that's interviewed. That's worked at large publications so we're GonNa go with you. So that was basically it was it was Bazeley. Hey you're you've worked at reputable places so we'll hire yeah. I do think that's interesting interesting career wise like over the years. I've worked at James Beard Foundation in Time Out New York and the food's severe than G. Q. Got more fashion thing that came back to food. I was a sports writer in college like it is you can move around and I think one thing that editors employers look for is that you do have experience in in a particular field and that you know how to get stuff done that you know under you understand what the industry requires but within that sort of industry you can shoot food. You can shoot you know people. You can do all these things. You don't have to be in one lane. One hundred percent I think at the time I was taking some classes and I was also I was studying NPR print journalism at the time and I remember talking about that with Jake and he was like Oh. This is a plus because you kind of understand writing thing and photography on some level so we'll run with this so he didn't internship summer internship a year or so later. We ended up hiring you as a foot assistant no so I did this summer internship and I was like this is way better than working fashion. Everyone's so much nicer yeah yeah. It was a great time and I was like in order for me to WANNA stay in this world I can see I need to shift from fashion to food media so then I went back to Boston awesome for my senior year and as as I left Alex pollock the photodetectors times like hey we love your great. Just reach out when you're when you're graduating we can like. Maybe you keep you keep you happy. Come back so I would always send emails and I say hey just graduated like three months three or four months. I would love to come talk about a photo editor assistant role. Did you in the interim year. Were you working on shooting things. Decrease your portfolio to share with Alex to say hey I just want. I've been shooting a lot. Take a look at my stuff. Yes so thankfully because of my time I she went over to Boston magazine for my senior of college and I ended up being digital intern which basically means I was just doing every anything and everything for the website correct the king yeah yeah I remember being so proud and like twenty years old on my I've got years of intern experience. I haven't been paid for any of them but you we know I've seen some stuff like that really was my my pride enjoy worked a lot of places and they harden managed digital intern and they also gave me bill do photo take pictures and do have my own bylines socially once a lot of times when you get your foot in the door somewhere are the the brand or the magazine wherever they need people to do stuff go. You can go okay but we'll trust you. There's something trustworthy about you. Then people are all right. Go give this a shot. You'd have a DVD will keep doing it. I must really thankful that it was a web internship versus print because obviously no one's GonNa give any Interna print byline whereas it's much lower risk to teachers hey make something for lab and if it's really good we'll Polish and if not we won't publish in no one will ever or care about low budget so it was just gave me a lot more freedom and they knew that I worked at the food magazine before okay so you know how to take pictures of food. You were photo intern turn. I'm like yeah I guess I mean I. I saw Marcus Nelson. Do you like an overhead shot of something by a window so I can do that. How hard can it be yeah so I mean I I? I did it and they would. It was really cool. I mean they sent me there. Okay so we'll just have you do restaurants so they would send me like once a week in shoot for four restaurants a week and just shoot it for their website so who was giving you guidance about photos style at that point what kind of shots they wanted from the restaurants. It's nobody else really. They just assumed you knew what you were doing. The funny thing is I applied to Boston magazine to be a photo inter. I WANNA continue that path that track of being working for requirements it's but they they didn't want but then the digital department got back to me. I didn't really have communication with the magazine so it was just kind of me and our digital editor who just send me. I was like Oh this. Let's get this close enough to bone advocate and some overhead shots off light and like keep doing this and I would just bike around Boston Jason and go to a bunch of restaurants that are digital restaurant editor Chris Hughes covered and yeah it was it was really good training. It's really good training. I looking back it was really great just being able to go in and practice and shoot restaurants for relatively low risk and have that be an internship set eh great base so then I shot all these restaurants and as shooting what's in all this stuff to Alex pollick. I'm like hey portfolio.
