Eligible U.S. Families With Children will receive Child Tax Credit Payments
"More than thirty six million american families. We'll start seeing extra money in their bank accounts today. The irs is sending out the first round of payments that are part of the expanded child tax credit the average family. We'll get about three thousand dollars total for each child. that's a big increase. Since the usual child tax credit is up to two thousand dollars for each child. People won't get all the money at once though families with children under age six. We'll get up to three hundred dollars per child every month for children between six and seventeen. It's two hundred fifty dollars and there is no limit on the number of children. Everyone qualifies except the most affluent families for parents who filed taxes as a single person. The cap is one hundred twelve thousand dollars a year. It's one hundred fifty thousand dollars for married couples who file their taxes together. People with higher incomes will get smaller payments. The extra money will come every month until the end of this year. Either through direct deposit or check in the mail. The rest of the tax credit can be claimed as a tax refund next year as the new york times reports. Nearly ninety percent of all american children have parents who qualify for the tax credits. Bipartisan experts predict the payments could cut child poverty in half however some critics have said not everyone who's getting these payments really needs them so they believe at least some of the money is going to waste still. Or potentially as you're building a case for infiltrative process that's rapidly developing which is making my spidey sense. Go up and so these labs are pointing us direction that this is a good opportunity to hopefully intervene on this patient and get a better outcome but not completely reassuring in something that again. "You've been telling me about why. I think there's going to be a model as an ex refresh. Yeah and there was like it was really hard to test drive them. There were like upping the sales out of everything they were. You couldn't see them in showrooms anymore night. This big list of rumors as to why we thought it might happen and then like an hour ago. It just all unveiled so well. So there's a there's a lead up to it the the model s. design is it's like ten plus years old at this point like fundamentally. The design of the car is unchanged since the beginning rate. So there's one small outside refresh her where the front grill nose cone. that was an exterior. Like look change. Is that what you call a nosecone nosecone. Yeah i've always just called at the grill. But obviously it's not. It isn't enact plastic nosecone two more metal okay but The autopilot versions changed. But really fundamentally the inside has always been that vertical screen and it's always been the same doors. Same door handles same shape so they've never really changed the model s. in car years. That's a long time let alone tech years that's forever. Yeah so. The rumors have been building for a long time. And we kind of were like. I think that this earnings call on wednesday were according to one night. Just say you know yeah have plans to possibly make video about all this. So there's three there's a long range model s a plaid model s and a plaid plus model s. so model s long range has four hundred twelve mile range zero to sixteen three point one seconds dual motors and it's. It's a pretty standard. Look that's like what probably most people getting a model less would get then. The performance version is your plaid model s. which goes directly to triple motors. It drops a little bit range three hundred ninety miles but it goes two hundred mile an hour. Top speed and zero to sixty in one point nine nine seconds. I'm gonna say that one more time just in case you didn't hear it this. Several thousand pound four door family car. Hatchback does zero to sixty in one point. Nine nine seconds like you need to like take a an advanced driver's test in order to get something that can go under two seconds to pilot this thing. Yeah yeah every time. I think about like performance cars on the street. I'm like i icy regular people driving cars poorly all the time and i just get a little bit worried about giving them that much power. There's a whole youtube rabbit hole of great like mustang arm beats of people just like wrecking it into the median pulling out yet i mean i guess the good thing is this is all wheel. Drive is the safest car on the world. This is a car that's tries really hard not to crash itself but yeah lot power here but just so you know that's starting at one hundred twelve thousand nine ninety which has ten thousand more than the previous model and then plaid plus is eleven hundred horsepower versus that one thousand twenty of plaid zero to sixty. There are a little more vague with this under one point nine nine seconds. So it'll be faster. We don't know how much faster it's still trip promoters. And it'll do the quarter mile in less than nine seconds which would make it. The quickest zero to sixty and the quickest quarter-mile acceleration in any production car. Ever and again. this is not yet the roadster. This is just a speck. Yeah but the most interesting spec to me of plaid plus is it still triple motor. There's new battery info but it goes five hundred twenty plus miles on a charge. So what was the long range again. Four sixty long-range was four. Twelve for twelve plaid was down to three ninety and then plaid plus was five twenty so this leads me to believe that. Plaid plus is a different battery technology. Do you think it's the one. Because that's sounds around the specs of the roadster was supposed to have right exactly roadsters. Got us six twenty plus quoted mile range and on top of that. This is the one other thing that's really interesting. I'll just touch on the x for a second. I don't think this is happening the x. Because if you go to the model x. site you can see you have the long range version which has a three hundred sixty mile range and the plaid version which has a three hundred forty mile range. So there's no plaid. Plus so whatever's happening with plaid. Plus is i guess this ultra high end security premium powertrain and battery system that only the high end model s. And i guess eventually roadster star gonna get it. Sounds like it's just a roadster with a model spotty it's a four door roadster four door to door. Yeah no it's it's a it's a crazy it's crazy car i. I'm prefacing all this with like. I don't need it. I'm not gonna get it. I'm gonna wait till the roadster but also this is absolutely insane. What they've done now really. The the most important part is the inside of the car that they've updated so like i said simplicity's sake finally switched to the horizontal touchscreen inside which i think looks pretty good. It's like a little more well integrated with the car doesn't stick out as much as three. Yeah i think what i like. I like that. But i liked that. They kept the screen in front of you. Like a regular odometer like they have in the model s. already because like three and y. I'm fine with that screen. There i only thing is. It's a little weird that you have to look over seer odometer but the fact that you have a better spot there and you still have your regular like driving odometer with a high acid and speaking of that steering wheel hobo this is this is the interesting went and i think this is where a lot of people are polarized because this interior looks very similar minus steering wheel if you look on their site. It's a yoke style steering wheel and it's almost kinda squared off. So it's like the bottom half of a square steering wheel and then there's a bunch of buttons on the steering wheel itself and there are no blinker stocks. No windshield wiper stocks. Nothing behind the wheel. No paddles no nothing yeah. Let's paint a picture here though. Because i've never heard the term yoke style and i only understand it because i saw the picture right before so picture fighter jet handles like that. Yoke style top trying to top office doing rectangle and doesn't have a top part. So yeah i'm just like i was just trying to think about using it. In general it seems so cool for like straight line in like minor turns on a highway but exactly turning around in a parking lot or like a tight driveway or something seems miserable on it. Yeah i this is one of those things where i'm imagining it and i'm imagining it really poorly and i think i'm just going to have to try it because as of right now i don't even think this is legal to ship yet. I think you technically have to have enclosed steering wheel and then people earliest you have to ship it with one and the people can modify it later. I think that's technically the rule here in the us. I don't know the rules internationally. But i've never seen a car actually ship with a yoke steering wheel before so again. This is all tb will see it happens. But i think i'm going to have to give it a shot because it's really weird.

Measuring Sea Level Rise From Space
"Okay hersher film in. Why do scientists care so much about the satellite set to launch this weekend. Well you actually have to go back a little bit. We all know that human activities are changing. The atmosphere in unexpected and in unprecedented ways is that george h w bush. Yeah nineteen ninety. The first president bush actually talked fair fairmount about climate change. It was something that scientists have been publicly warning about at that point for decades and climate scientists were looking for more government support for their research. Big ticket items things like using federal research ships to study what was happening in the arctic for example and launching satellites that could measure what was happening on earth from space particularly the oceans because as we said the oceans they are so vast that you can only study them in their entirety from space. And it's actually just a couple years after that. Nineteen ninety speech that we just heard that the first satellite launches that can measure sea level. Rise was called topex-poseidon since the earliest times when humans i beheld the seashore and set how raft simple boats the oceans of venice sources great mystery. I remember the first time i'd be held the seashore hersher. You know that's a video that nasa made to celebrate the ten year anniversary of the topics. Poseidon satellite launch from its vantage point in space. Some thirteen kilometers or about above the earth surface topex-poseidon circles the globe. Once every one hundred twelve minutes okay. First of all that videos fantastic second. What do they mean. They were circling the globe measuring what exactly so the height of the ocean surface because by then levels were already rising because of climate change ice already melting in the nineteen ninety s global temperatures rising sea levels. Were going up. So scientists were racing to make better climate models to predict what sea level rise would look like over time and help people prepare this original satellite. It was a big step forward because it allowed them to see basically the whole earth at once. Got it okay. So this original satellite went up in the nineteen nineties. Does this new one replace it. It's actually been replaced multiple times. There were three more sea level rise. Satellites launched in the intervening years in each one was a little better make sense. Maybe a little more accurate a little more durable so this last satellite the one that's about to launch. It must be like pretty good right. They've been practicing for a while. How accurate is this thing. It is freely accurate. I talked to the lead. Scientists on the mission at jet propulsion laboratory in california. My name is josh willis. And i'm the lead nasa scientist for the sentinel six mission. The sentinel is the name of the new satellite technically. It's sentinel six michael froehlich. It's named after a former nasa leader. Who is clearly extremely popular. Because apparently nasa doesn't really name things after people who are alive. He was alive when they named it for him. He's since died. Anyway i talked. Josh willis about how accurate the satellites sea level rise measurements are. It's really kind of an incredible feat of technology. We can actually measure the water level with an accuracy of about one inch from eight hundred miles up. That's wild hersher like how it uses radar actually a radar beam Comes down out of the satellite. It bounces off that surface and then it measures the signal coming back and by figuring out how long it takes to go down and come back you can tell how far away the water is You know how far the water surface is from the satellite. You can figure out how high the water is relative to like the land. yeah exactly exactly so sentinel six. You can imagine it will crisscross nearly the whole earth every ten days making these really accurate measurements. And so. if you're a scientist you can use all that data to get a really detailed picture of how high the oceans are and how that is changing over time. here's a thing sentinel. Six will be there for five years and there's already an identical satellite in the works that will launch when that time is up and do another five years so it's ten years of continuous super accurate data about how high the oceans are and that right there that is why climate scientists are so jazzed about this satellite because scientists love reliable data reliable continuous data. Especially because imagine if you are trying to understand how quickly sea levels are rising. You need measurements every year for decades because climate change is a slow and steady catastrophe.

"This is planet money from NPR. In two thousand at the age of seventeen. Angel. Sanchez gets his first real job. It's in the Law Library at the Soto Correctional Institution in southwest Florida where Angel is an inmate mark first day at work. I walk in and they told me this is your desk. and. Had A desk I've never in my life had a desk before that moment right away. Angel loves this place. There are no guards there's no fighting they even have their own coffee pot and it was a sense of liberation homeless for out of prison. In that moment, Angel had lived a hard life. The first time police put him in handcuffs. He was in the third grade in the principal's office by age fourteen, Angel Traded Sixty Bucks in his Super Nintendo for his first gun he ran away from home he joined a gang. And at Seventeen, he was sentenced to thirty years in prison for armed robbery and gang related shootings, and it's in his first year in prison that he gets that job in the library and as he begins to study the law there, he starts to feel something that he's never really felt before like maybe he has plans I liked it because it allowed me to challenge the system in a legal way I. always there was never a challenge. The police stopped me I can't do. Nothing about that. They slap me a candle nothing about that and the law gave me an avenue that says, no, you could challenge it. Angel starts working on a paralegal certificate and as he's studying, he starts to think wait this is dot as hard. As I thought, it would be learning the laws like how what lawyers charge so much. It doesn't take much to learn to do this and most of the forms are refilled. What is going on here I thought it was a scam. This esoteric thing that I thought only geniuses knew I could get it. Either genius or they're not and I said Madiba ever got how could I be a lawyer but then he thinks Oh wait with even let me be a lawyer with a felony conviction. He looks into it and the answer in Florida is probably not or at least it would be very hard I. He'd have to beg the governor for clemency, which is almost never granted and then angel learns he's also lost a bunch of other rights. Because of his felony learned that in Florida, you're voting rights you're right to sit on during your rights rump up public office for life. It's losing the right to vote that really stinks for Angel. He's like hold up I can't vote ever like, I'm seventeen years old I've never even had the right to vote, and now you're telling me that for the rest of my life I, just get no say as a citizen of this democracy. Which is true. Of course, not just for Angel. There are about one point, four, million people with felony convictions in Florida one in ten adults with a felony conviction more than one in five African Americans. They what? But that's something that will come from some other countries like my family they come from Venezuela and Cuba there you see the government trying to imprison people and then use the law to take away people's political power but not in the United States. So I was really excited about it plus handmaidens tail and a political drama. Yeah. Sure. That's that sounds like something that I'm really interested in. Yeah. I mean my main thing is. I don't know if the handmaidens hill comparison is that are descriptive of what this story really is because to me, it definitely was a pro woman story, but I don't really know if I got handed until vibes besides the fact that there's like a handmaiden it you know I actually got more of. The handmaiden, the Korean movie. I got more of that five because that movie is It's told multiple multiple perspectives and us the story is not what seems like and you kind of have to like piece together everyone's motives and how their plans and motives like fit together. So it kind of reminded me more of that movie. Yeah, which is also based on a book. It's based on the fingersmith Sarah Waters, which I highly recommend. It's it's great. Yeah. It's also queer, which is you know this book is also very Queer Zaveri Queer friendly story. There is a lot of different characters on all sides of the LGBTQ spectrum I guess we can start with just how the story is set up. So the story is told through I guess, would you call the second person narrative? Is that what this is or now I? It's third person narrative right? Actually it's third person and then when it switches to flashbacks, swin rabbit is telling the story that's first person right so but basically the main character or the protect I mean tonight even protectionist right like the. I guess perspective character. Through the story. The main character is a monk or in this world, a cleric named chief who is coated as a non binary they go by them pronouns and their. Magical. Talking Bird companion who is actually like a supercomputer right? To go there like a bird that can remember an archive everything it sees and hears you know I had to Google what a what a hoopoe was his Like through context clues was like, okay, it's a bird but what this bird? Looks like Google Google. It was I mean right off the bat and we can talk about this later. Now we want but it's this book is Novella it's really short. It's one hundred and twenty eight pages I wanNA say or it's it's less than a hundred pages I'll wet. Okay. So I just checked how many pages it was on kindle. It's one hundred twelve pages. Okay. So even less yeah, and in those short on a pages, it does a ton of world building and I know this is something that you and I have thoughts about. But like to me, I feel like it did a lot of world building through giving really sparse details. Requiring the reader to kind of fill in the blanks. Right off the bat, you have a talking bird which took me a while to figure it was a bird. you have supernatural hungry ghosts. Yeah. And like implied magic in the world to there's allusions to Mejia's and whether magic like we mentioned. So like right off the bat it Kinda throws you into this world that the reader has to figure out what's going on through context lose. Totally independent of the actual narrative because I think even without the like fantastical. Does also stand alone on its own as like A. Story of political intrigue. In. Rebellion Yeah.

"The Murchison his large raging in the state of Western Australia. That's nine for it's agricultural and mining prospects. During the Western Australian Goldrush of the light eighteen hundreds, many people flocked to the area in the hopes of securing a fortune which resulted in the construction of several towns that were later abandoned when the short lived gold rush ended. Afterwards there was little work available except for agricultural workers shape, shearer's camel and toe spike is blacksmiths and boundary riders who were employed to maintain the outer edges of sheep and cattle stations. But. The turn of the Twentieth Century Roberts from the country's ace than sites had made their way across the desert, and into Western Australia's agricultural areas. European settlers had introduced the rabbits to Australia more than a hundred years earlier and to die, eventually became an invasive pest that caused significant damage to the country's ecology and farmland. To combat what became known as the great plague? The Western Australian government decided to build the world's longest fence which stretched all the way from the north. Coast to the south coast. In Nineteen, Oh two construction of the first phase began in the small wheatbelt belt in of Barak Open which became the major administration center for the fence.
