"You tell rico if you watch it and a little bit of the games on the end but again it's something that a. It looks a lot of homebrew stuff. A lot of in television games which again are not that crazy. Visually and a lot of people would go like really these games he would like back in the day. But you know there's a lot of that. There's an earthworm jim gain. That's coming specifically for it but it. It looks like it's again another that's gonna come out at a really high price and doesn't do a whole lot for you. Yeah i think the big issue here is that like it's. They're selling them at a price the same price of like competitive councils. And they're not like putting them beyond like these retro fixes like what you get your retro games and then what's going to happen beyond that you know you said the television is doing an earthworm jim or whatever but like after that. What's what's next you know like there's games in like one hundred games or whatnot but still. It's a lot of its intelligent games. Which didn't push the needle dan. Don't push the needle now for for video games. Basically they're both these companies are banking on stahl and the problem is if you need a bank to go ahead and get one of these systems. That is a problem. It just needs to be at a great entry level price point and get people involved again. I mean i would like you said it was cheap was under one hundred dollars all day. You'd sell them out all day but that's the problem that that's the problem right there. Yeah yeah and you know again like the. The atari is is a very good looking console. It's just not like if you're a retro collector like you your budgets..

"And i think that when we like you said when we think about what we're using wins above replacement to really capture. That trade off is very much worth it but it is slightly less precise but hopefully people are being accused about the the sort of error and room for error in in war as it exists regardless of the baseline that you're using 'cause it isn't you know we spent time at the beginning of this season and i think we spend time during seasons like telling people to knock it overly fussed about very minute differences in war. If they're trying to you know have an mvp debate. That guy's worth five wins in that guy's only worth four point nine. Look well hold on a minute there. You don't get sassy about that. So there's you know there's air in any stash right that is trying to describe something as as sort of on as warez but i think that for its purpose it it does a pretty good job and a part of it too is that i think there's value in stats being reasonably easy to understand. Sort of and sort of figure out. I think that in terms of how likely they are to be adopted by people and sort of how likely they are to be a means by which people understand the game. There is something to be said for them being as straightforward as possible. Another complication in all of this stuff and some stats are You know you need you. Need to a whole bunch of stuff in a black box to calculate them in those stats are useful to. But i do think that they're them. Being sort of straight forward in some ways really useful to people actually using them. Tell yeah yeah. It's already what there's a fan graphs word baseball reference baseball prospectus. Now it would be way to. This guy is worth this many warren this team. But if you were on that team you'd be worth that you are. So yes you'd have to. You'd have to have an advanced degree to use that responsibly. Probably so it would be useful. In some cases. I think even just to convey like the different levels of depth that organizations have 'cause depth can be a tough thing to quantify. It's something that probably in the playoff odds and projects is not perfectly accounted for. And so if you could perfectly account for that then that would be helpful to have but at shudder to think of the mvp debates because people already find so many different ways to improve the word valuable whether it's clutch nece whether it's the playoff implications how good the players teammates are and now if we were considering not just the players teammates are sometimes people even pull salary intuit for no good reason really but were also to consider like who is the backup to this player and so how much more valuable is. He really compared to the player who would be playing in. His stead of something would happen to him. That would give you endless material for really pointless columns at the end of the season so some baseball writers would probably appreciate that but freight i think god. Can you imagine. It would be nightmarish. But ray all you have to do is point to the way we projected the playoff odds for the raise. Going into this season. To to see that there are there are some aspects of the stuff that can be kind of wanting. We don't account for debts as well as you know we ought to. I think that when when other ben when bank clemens wrote about his takeaways from our playoff odds before the season started this was one of the things that he pointed out. it's just. It's not that the projections are wrong. It's just the dealing with that kind of depth is is hard to fold in and so you know if there was going to be one place where we were potentially really discounting a team than the race. Were going to be at now. You look at there are vase like well. Were you so clever. Ben so yeah it's it's not perfect but i think that it does a good descriptive job and certainly far less complicated than it would be. So we're gonna stick with it will. Thanks for the question. Kate and apologies again for the podcast stockholm syndrome. Here are eight. Years one from matthew patriots supporter. You would be qualified to answer this question. Oh nephew says listening to your discussion. In episode sixteen ninety four about the experience of being a mariners fan over the last two decades. Got me thinking about whether it was in fact much worse to root for a terrible team as opposed to a merely below average to me. The difference between a seventy to ninety season and sixty two and one hundred season is on the margin. Were ten fewer days on which you could celebrate. Wins excluding minor other factors like potentially being in contention for slightly longer but from your discussion and reader emails and general baseball conversations. I feel like there's a belief that losing one hundred games is worse than losing ninety games by more than the simple difference in the number of losses in this line of thought. There is extra bad. Nece that for me truly terrible team that makes the experience of rooting for them. More soul-crushing you think a lot of people have that sense or am. I totally off base. If so do you think there is a level at which the extra badness factor kicks in or is there a small multiplier that applies to each extra loss. So that you accumulate a little extra badness when the team slides down the scale from sixty eight wins to sixty seven to sixty six etc and that adds up eventually from my own experiences as a mets fan. I tend to stop paying. Close attention or trying to watch most games. Basically once the team goes below five hundred. I still enjoy watching in going to games when they are bad. But i'm less likely to be invested on a day to day basis. I think this probably leads me not to notice the difference between a below average seventy five win team and a truly terrible sixty team or at least to notice it less than others. I wonder what the answer to. This question is for like a normal fan. 'cause i don't know that i'm a particularly representative sample. I think that. I think that once you're approaching the hundred loss sort of mark. It's it's its own kind of thing. I think that it's less the difference between say ninety and hundred as it is between like eighty and a hundred. That's where you start to have a noticeable difference in your experience of something because if you have a team that manages to float for extended periods of time sort of five hundred especially in the wildcard era. It's not necessarily difficult to convince yourself that like. Oh maybe they'll go on a little run and you never know right. You never know what will happen if they go on a little run and their team. That's around five hundred like a team. that's around. five hundred. That goes on a little run. Might be a wildcard team right. That might be a team or at least a team that you think could be a wildcard team like with two weeks left of the season and that's a dramatically different fan experience then all my god. This baseball team is going to lose one hundred game. It's one hundred kids around number one hundred games and i think that some portion of the fan base.

"To the details of the game Better going on for the first six seven eight innings to know coming into the game they got a no hitter. We are we are. We are not focused at all and we come in. Our focus is one thing. I need to get three outs or in the case of a specialist. I need to get one out right well. Kimbro he came in get three outs. We're gonna win the game we're gonna move on to hit the post game buffet and shut it down. The country's going be tied for first place. Said that's what it was. He had no idea. And i think we all acknowledge whether it's this field or or others. Sometimes when you turn your brain off a doesn't get in the way and i think that's the best way for most relievers to behave. I remember years ago when i first started. Espn tip curcio in. Told me something about his view and relievers closers specifically. He said to be a great closer either. Gotta be really smart or really dumb. Meaning you can analyze the situation or like you said nothing affects you not sure we're kimbro fits in there. But he's avenue agree speaking of him you know he's back looking like the kimbro of a few years ago. Era under one. You know a few weeks ago. There are rumors. Maybe the cubs would consider trading him because they've called this a kind of a middle ground transition year but now that they're you know in first place or fighting for first place. I think they keep them right. They don't trade him. At this point but the the of gum everything up for tom. Ricketts et cetera. Jed hoyer they they they got it all up because they are exceeding expectations to some degree. The indians have gummed it up because they are just two games out and the white sox are all banged up to a large degree. The san francisco giants while they haven't gummed it up because the expectations were different. The giants still lead. The dodgers padres the dodgers and padres trailed the giants four and a half games and we are almost in july so they are forcing their front office to think about addicts. Those three teams of have made life very different. I wouldn't even say difficult just in a in a nice way different than what they expected. The cubs shouldn't make any moves that are going to change the payroll. But i think david you would acknowledge and anyone else Baseball these are great. Reminders of the team sport. That baseball is we're so focused right now on the nba and it's postseason an individual names. Ben simmons keep popping up and is this guy a superstar trae young on that next level. You know baseball you. You cannot rely on one player let alone two players. We see here at the college world series. But we're certainly reminded all the time how in the world can the cubs be competitive. If they don't have you darvish. Well they were. We're finding that out and we're reminded rough fighting it out. We're reminded that this is eight. The ultimate team sport. And it's the it's the ultimate It's the ultimate kitchen. When you have the right ingredients you can make the most perfect meal ever and it may not be the ingredients. You originally thought we're gonna taste the best. Well guess what this is working in san francisco. It's working in chicago. It's working in other places like new york. Even though we've had some injuries with the mets it works. And that's to me. What always makes baseball. Great there is a full you never knew but we always on. What are they doing. Great darvish what are they doing. They're never going to win. And lo and behold there winning. So i think i think yes. I think when you get to this point of the season you don't think about moving. Craig kimbrel i. It's a very difficult thing. However i've just set the stage for well if they traded craig kimbrel and got a couple of pieces they still may have somebody who can close games still might and that's the beauty of this game. Yeah no i guess that would be the theory their bullpen. So good but you know. He's been such a huge part to their success. But yeah it's a great point. That's why i love the giants story because in march the big story line dodgers. Padres is going to be this epic to team in a west race. You know they're going to both win. One hundred games and here are the giants you know having this season. So that's fantastic. Another guy you know you mentioned you darvish who the cubs got rid of was kyle schwarzer. Who has been red. Hot twelve home runs in june and the nationals. Who two weeks ago. We're like they're going to be trading max scherzer. They're going to be trading torbert. Well they've won ten out of eleven and in that division where there's not a super team are the nationals back in it so i don't think they're gonna be trading away. Players at this point either agree with that as well. I don't think i look mike. Rizzo is not inclined to do it and you are free and a half games back. I will say though that to me that team especially given some of the issues with their pitching and their injuries And having just won a world series in some ways you you you buy favor with your fan base. You just did this and you did it with scher and strasbourg corbin. And we really haven't seen stephen strasburg who when he's on to me is the most dominant pitcher i think his stuff is better than any other ventures when he's on and that means when he's playing in that obviously hasn't been the case to me the nationals. More are in that category. Will we do have. It's three and a half if we all four out We get to a point where they have pieces. Sherman particular Warburg maybe another one of those. If you need be at that you can move. And i just think because you've bought fancy with your fan base you have the ability to say. Hey hold on here. Folks look look at the youth on our team. Look at the athleticism. If we were to move one of these two we could get younger and better and next year. Be right back here again. We have to be realistic. We probably are not as good as even the braves if they ever got healthy. We're probably not as good. As and i guess i'm going to save the giants the padres and the dodgers although the you're you're inclined to save the dodgers and padres. I don't think they're that good. But if if you would ever have sherzer and strasbourg pitching at the same time. Then anything can happen. But i think that they are. That exception of we got some unbelievably valuable pieces here. And we got some teams. That would be desperate. Na starting stud like that guy sherzer can can get a lot in return so to me. That's the one of them that is in the position to say to its fan base. Look we did try like we're doing this now. We're gonna do it sometime in august. We gotta figure out when is when if we continue to be three four or five games out and trust me. We'll be back next year and look rizzo's really good. You know he. He knows he wins trades. He'll figure out how to win another one. Yeah it'll be fascinating. What they do you know they have arguably the weakest farm system in the majors so you flip shergar cup really good prospects. That might be too hard to turn down with this one. Speaking of schmerber the yankees are so right handed boy. They could use him. You know was left handed bat net. Lineup i knows defense in left field wouldn't be great joy he's hitting. I would live with his defense to get another lefty bats that lineup and luck. The yankees are not a team that is going to trade anything you know they they. This is a this is why we're here. We are in a win now. We will continue to add. Yeah a left handed bat like that makes great sense By the way. So does the max scherzer make great sense. They obviously don't have great starting pitching depth And that is the team whether their four games out two games out or five and a half games out there is a reason never to say never given the talent that they have so sure that would make that would make great sense a network. They're playing a little better at sanchez. Hitting a little bit more. But i could certainly see them shaking things up in an effort to get better. I don't think that they just trade a a Everyday player to to not get something in return. I think it's going to help them win. Now and this is. This is the ultimate win now team with all due respect to the dodgers and the raise and even the astros. This is the ultimate win. Now team eventually baseball new york yankees. No doubt i mean twelve years in counting. Not that i'm county. But there's kids playing literally who have never seen their beloved yankees in a world series. Let alone win one. So i know they're right up on that luxury tax threshold. But they gotta do something. Carl thanks for joining us. Enjoy the game tonight. I think we're gonna have another good one and you'll be back next week. I believe with buster. Thanks you.

"I mean i it's it's been a wild experience. Obviously with social media is just been crazy trying to keep up with everyone. Just send us messages. And i knew this. I knew this trip would helped me a lot. But i didn't really realize the the others and that's way i think is just so cool about or ten days and just more absurd for the next morning while you know you said something prior to this journey and that guy jogs my memory a little bit and gonna quote you because you were recorded saying look. Maybe i was always meant to be more than a hockey player. And maybe this is how. I can have an impact so it sounds like when you said that you believe that. This was the journey needed to take. And now you're joining us and you're confirming that. This has been great for you so if you'll always wondered that or did hockey kinda suppressed those feelings for you over the years. No i mean. I wanted. I wanted to play in the nhl. Twelve forty five. you know. it's not you know this was never. This was never in the books. You know right near journal and stuff when you're in kindergarten and preschool and you know no one signs up one hundred games the nhl. You don't like no dreams just that wish wanna make it to the nfl. You know you wanna be an all star. You want to make the olympic team. You wanna win cups and you know and that's kind of taken away from you without your without your power. It's you know it screws with you and it's often da. It's yeah it's kind of unexplainable for sure now when he decided to go on the trip. So how do you find the right person to go with. How do you find the right roads to go. I'm just amazed even that you just said okay. I'm doing this and out. You went was much more thought than i mean. It's more thought than that but much more than that. Honestly no i texted my buddy. "For the uc be pilots for exactly private pilot. That's amazing and i think that's you guys are just both always conquering new areas and diving into new and exciting stuff. And i know the flying isn't new for your sister but to reach. That level is really exciting to be able to to work that hard. It's it's an accomplishment in of itself. It's it's a lot of work in instruments a no joke test. You know to be able to to be able to fly in instrument cells. She got recently He she was ranked first lieutenant air patrol so she joins civil later patrolling. She's like first lieutenant and she's continuing to enjoy what she's doing. She really likes to fly and shoot lofta train martial-arts so she is also doing what is most important in cal- live. Do you ever get nervous going up. What are you like you know. You don't know what your the main she's doing. She's like taken care of every scene and checking every single detail before flight after flight. She's not just like okay jumpy. Let's go. She's taking really good care of awesome. I mean i think that's a tremendous accomplishment in not be listening congratulate. I mean the whole thing. I saw the picture The civil air corps thing and everything. It's awesome and it's it's a lot of fun to continue to kind of press into these areas. I'm sure she was pumped when you went out to the one hundred games and that is just so much cool stuff swirling around you guys in years. Never a dull moment with both you ladies. You're always kind of pushing into new exciting stuff. And that's why like you'll say some things like we're doing a clothing line in the last time you're out here and it's like i follow up with it. It's going great. We're onto the next thing so you're always pushing it forward and i love that. I think that's one of the things that that draws so many people to both of you in so many ways and just the idea that there's no wasted time..

"Is somebody that you that you do that. With maybe see four or five is on the ledger. You can take them out but for the most part. I just dropped a guy like this. You know what. Like a fourth outfielder type. They're outfielder and you just put them in. And you leave it you get your thirty-something homers and you had just you know for those of you are in on base percentage leagues in you've got Necessarily have to take him out against lefties. He has got a seventeen percent walker. That's true senate forget it. Then if you're an ob. His on base percentage versus lefties. Three seventy one versus riotings is to ninety holy crap. Yeah that's shock. That's really so bad in average leagues. You definitely want to get him out against lefties to eighteen. I think he's only got one of his home runs against left-handed beijing. Yeah one of his thirteen home runs against ten pitching so like this is the real like these are the kind of players like with real big distinctions between average on base percentage leagues. You really wanna look at like okay. Versus a lefty. He gets super super station. Because you know exactly. A- probably to the point of past seventy which we we've talked about that that breaking point there of where you go from patients to passive and. I think there's definitely some of that like you said because he can't hit him so he's like well. I'm going to ride this out. And see if i can get a walk so been good obviously been picked up in the leagues where he's available some of the shower leagues. He'll he'll pop up on the wire when he's in a downturn and then you jump on them but i just ride this out. I just wanted to talk about what he's been doing though because he has taken to that leadoff spot recently and ben pretty good is last question before. Move to our next guy. Is there any hope for this Washington offense to have like a surge in your eyes at all or are they just not good. I think there is because that division is like completely up for grabs like i mean. I know that they're thirty. And thirty. five and seven half games back. But like the mets like seemingly could fall apart at any moment in then there only two and a half games back from the phillies and they're tied with the braves like i think this division is and they have two superstars in soto and turner schwarzer bell gums their roster up and down. And you go this. You're all like theoretically good and plays having a rebirth. You talk about another guy who took the air off the just brought back luis garcia. He could be key. Because castro has been bad and you know. So as roma's those has been the two downspouts but roma's place because of his defense. And if garcia could add something offensively and kinda take over that that castro spot the bulk of their offense has been above average so maybe there is a little something here in the summer where they get even better and and and hit that surge. Didn't realize this many guys weren't doing well. I i really thought it was. You know schmor- soto turner and then a bunch of any. It's but the question is like what is a rotation guy young point you know. I mean they don't have sure that he should be back. I mean i think strasbourg is probably dime. I know he's going to see a specialist. I have no. They're either patrick corbin. He was amazed. But i'm not building a lot of confidence wind right now with carbon. I need like three straight and the one before that only three runs in five meetings about four walks. So it's can string together. I before i before. I do anything with the. Yeah but that line is really deceiving. Because like he was pitching really really well and fell apart in the last inning which one the tampa bay star own on thinking of me. Watch some danielle an evacuation. Yeah he was great through five and in the sixth inning. Unraveled on the tampa bay. Start was the other way. His first inning was bad and then he settled. Now you can ryan some things in those. Two starts and then culminated with the gem against pittsburgh which is pittsburgh. But here's the thing. I won't give a little credit for that for corporate. Because he couldn't get the two of us in seven other guys out for a while there so you got a hammer the pittsburgh when you get the opportunity. At least he did that. I'm still nervous about him though. And i keep him at arms-length in his velocity is been above ninety one of cannibal. Right anything every starts since mid april. Okay well do you think he's a by its corporate. Your maybe stashing them. Because he's on wires now. I think he's a watch guy for I mean i started him in virtually every place. I have which is everywhere this week but it was. You know because you gotta you gotta take that shot their otherwise there's no center having him but I do think he is especially with all the injuries to other guys mean like he. He's gotta be employees in in most formats obviously ten team in in some twelve team leagues. You could probably just leave him on the wiring kind of you know. Pick your spots him picking him up in streaming but You know in in most twelve team leagues and fifteen team leagues. He needs to be roster as fair. An answer for sherwin with corman Maybe maybe turning a little bit of a corner notches with that pittsburgh. Start but there's only one bad inning and those other two starts recently and if he can iron out that one bad inning. That would turn cormon around anyway. I he only he only allowed one. Walk in pittsburgh like that too in no no. No home runs in his last tuesday. I can get Born with all that with regards to gordon let's move on to labor torres. So what's going on with him. Events kind of a vague question but it's been essentially average now dating back to last year at one zero six plus last year ninety eight this year. You add it all together again. It's it's basically four hundred plate appearances in one hundred games of league. Average work six homers five stolen bases in those four hundred and two plate appearances to fifty five hundred forty nine. Three fifty. Three fifty five is his slung in that time. This is twenty and twenty one together for labor. The hell's going on man even if you were very much banging the drum and saying like okay. Nineteen was a little bit. You know too much because of the thirty eight homers. He's not quite this guy because of the baltimore stuff or whatever even if you were that person nobody thought he was a three fifty five slug justin right even as big as detractors. I don't. I didn't see anybody saying this. I'm going to say. I don't think any even as big as detractors thought i was one of his big hers and i was four hundred slug. So what the hell's going. I thought he was of value. That do because like. I only have i think in one league. But he's been riding my bench in a twelve at her what he.

"We're talking about video games in the cloud. No you're not going to be on an airplane flying. you play video games. This is a totally different thing or maybe some day but right now we're talking about cloud base games while you're on earth that's right. It's it's still a big developing story and one of the big players. There is microsoft which has been building out and testing a cloud based video. Game service Over the last couple years and it's going to be expanding that and i didn't realize they had actually done this actually calling it xbox cloud gaming service and been previously. We've been referring to this project x cloud anyway so microsoft announced. Its the services is going to be able to be tested on more devices. Currently it's being tested on. You can play it on xbox consoles p. season android devices but it's going to begin a limited beta test by inviting some game pass ultimate members to play on chrome and edge browsers on windows t in windows ten. Pc's and on the safari browser on apple iphones and ipads. So you're getting more devices and obviously you're getting outside of the windows microsoft round when you get into apple here For those familiar with this the xbox game pass ultimate. It's the subscription service that microsoft. Has it cost fourteen ninety nine a month and it gets you access to more than one hundred games. Click games like halo. grand theft. auto five fallout four. It also includes xbox gold which is the online multiplayer access. Which if you're a longtime xbox user you have that anyway to play games with other people online that's nine ninety nine itself so this is just five dollars more and you get the access to ultimate and there's also various games from electronic arts as part of its e a play library

"Either of those things is amazing. Guy you can't take your eyes off of a guy who does it in sanding is really something he never ever seen. And when i wrote that thing. I just want it real quick because actually our our system was about to go down for maintenance so i only had time to put out about two hundred words in a couple of videos at the very end of it blast line. I put and this was written minds. You in the second inning was. Here's hoping otani stays healthy for the entire year. And i always felt like a kind of him. Because then you know at the end of the satanic is. He said it was the plate plate. The and by the way nothing even remotely dirty on brave part was a tiny jump for the ball and that's how he came down afraid just slid into the plate as he should have. But we're we're seeing a guy that if he stays healthy can be just a game changer. And it's not like he's going to inspire other people to do the same thing that he does because nobody can do the same things that he does but he's the kind of guy that that really can can truly just take sport at a country by storm. If he stays healthy does the things he does that he did. In the first five innings last night you know part of it too is going to be how the angels in joe maddon handle him and they're going to be aggressive in their handling of famine. There ask for a lot out of him so your rights as a baseball fan here selfishly hoping he stays healthy but hoping that all these young guys stay healthy because there's such an influx of talent and excitement elite grain. I really is crazy because you know you have a tiny. He's in his mid mid to late twenties. Then you got some of these young guys mean juan soto and fernando tattoos. June janis old man compared to some of them. I know it's crazy but it's these guys that are coming up at just doing credible things. At young ages i mean. He's got that long extension which he deserved. He's he's playful season. I mean he's already superstar and he's got the play more than one hundred games a year. And so you know the best is in front of these guys so exciting their already great and they're going to be even better than you know if you're looking for reasons to get into baseball and watch some snake citing players there. There's certainly a lot of the guys out there right now. Ryan fagin read them at sporting news. Dot com.

"Since i was like six. Yeah so yeah well as far as your question like here's the thing. The orioles are about five years away from being five years away. I mean the thing know coming into today's podcast with you guys. And i was looking back at the team's pretty much going all the way back and you know the shirt i'm wearing here. This is a retro eddie. Murray shirt you know and this was the last good decision. The orioles really ever made in my opinion as far as signings and firings the orioles finished in. Dfl dead last in. I think eighty eight eighty seven. They lost one hundred games back then and they had any murray who i think either was close to winning the mvp or something of that fact. And they traded him away. They got rid of nazis and and they came up to the owner and their coach manager. At the time i said. Why did you get rid of our best player. And the guy said if we lost one hundred games with him we can lose one hundred games without him and it's a great line and there's so much truth to that and coming into thinking about the so many years have gone by and between the orioles drafting which has been horrendous of all. What do we need pitchers. Go look at our our draft. It's been pictures for days. I can name the chris. Thielemans and brian madison gausman adam. Low in just miss after miss after missing. Don't get me wrong. They hit it. Nice with manny machado. Even brian roberts for a little bit. But they're drafting has been horrendous baseball. It's not as guaranteed as some of the other sports. So i can't fault that too much the signings that they've made over the years that have set them back from albert bell. Which was that massive contract that just set it back for four or five years. I kind of compare lots of football. Where if you draft a quarterback with your first pick and it it's a best you're looking at like three to four years of rebuilding. You're just going to be set back. The same thing kind of happens in baseball with bad contracts and if you now the yankees with giancarlo you can recover from that because it's a bigger market but the orioles aren't at the top guy if they're going to be giving marty cordova. They a huge contract to. We mentioned. Chris davis they give us contract to do. I think they still have mar- trumbull on the books this year. Like it's just stuff that you're like what are you doing. And then the last couple years these signings. They made in which they signed alex to like a two year. Twenty eight million dollar contract. I remember texas buddy going. Why are we giving him fourteen million dollars to do what to eat. Innings like who cares at this point. I am one of those people who i don't ever wanna lose a game close if we're going to lose a game loose by a lot like what's the difference rebuild to make better signings start over. What we need to do is get a new owner. Get new general managers and rebuild and unfortunately our owners not selling because he's one of those owners who's in it for the profit not for the winning and when he dies he's gonna leave it to his son. Peter angelos who we all angelou's which is all we ever do. We you know what we are going to need to do more of this with you. Alan welcome back baseball family. Thanks for sticking with us. We hope you enjoyed.

Apple Updates App Store Review Guidelines

"Let's talk a little more about apple updating its APP store rules to explicitly allow game streaming services. You know things like, Google, stadio Microsoft's project x cloud. Each game offered on the service just needs to be downloadable separately from the APP store. And every game update must be submitted to apple before it can stream to users. In other words, there can't be one APP that just streams the collection of games there has to be a collection of APPS for streaming each game, and then they can have a catalog APP that can link out to each game out. So let's say Google media has one hundred games they. Would need to have a hundred APPs one for each game and then a stadia catalog APP that would link out to those other APPS and don't forget services must also offer the option to pay for subscriptions with apples in purchases, which, of course gives thirty percent to apple. The game services also must offer apple sign in which is derived you're now on the APP STORE Apple also updated rules so that one to one fitness or tutoring classes do not have to be billed through the APP store one too many fitness classes do that addresses a facebook events issue and another formal exception has been made for free. APPs acting as standalone companions to a web based tool this addresses, the problem the hey, email service had if this had been the rule, then hey, wouldn't have had any problem. So that's a good one. The one to one fitness will help those people on making use the facebook events. Billing but. I don't know rob that that. Allowing streaming services doesn't seem like it's allow a lot of streaming services. It says though they don't want streaming services on. These devices because the couple have dozens if not hundreds of abstract going to go through all, that is just there's you know what is the reward for doing that amount of work for giving up thirty percent of your take? So I I, just don't see that happening I. Mean I guess you could. Just, to play devil's advocate, you can automate that every APP would be essentially the same APP providing access to the streaming service limited to to one game. Once you get the first one up, it's not that hard to do but you're right. It's extra work that you don't need to do. It's more things that can go wrong and it's really not what the service is supposed to be. The services supposed to be I access the service through my browser or an APP not there's a bunch of APPs that access as a streaming game service. If. It feels like a very apple compromise with itself not an apple compromise for the services. Absolutely.

Xbox Series X and S Prices Revealed

"What do we? It has been for xbox. They finally announced the xbox series s we finally finally finally know the release date in price for both consoles. November tenth is on the next generation of xbox kicks off series x five hundred dollars series as three hundred dollars. A full two, hundred dollars cheaper digital only actually doesn't seem like it's that much less powerful It's basically. into. Four correct me if I'm wrong, it's not four K.. It's fourteen forty. The thrill leaning into the series s that's correct gets, but it can scale to four K. on your four K. TV and it plays media in four. K.. Wow, not video games. So are you surprised at the the two hundred dollar price difference between these two councils it makes the series s really really impressive and tempting I don't think it was something that that many sorta really hard core really engaged gamers like that super interested in this all the price in the specs I've seen a lot of people going to be like well, maybe. Yes. During the times, it's it's well suited to to kind of. Navigate for both kind of Gamers is a needs. If you want the upscale absolutely highest price edition, sure that that's an option. But at the same time, if you're on a little bit more of a budget seem super smart especially just enough in this landscape with twenty twenty it's kind of interesting route a because we know that you know most people don't have a four K. television they probably won't for A. While, and this will make you games look really good on your current television It's a next GEN system for thirty bucks I mean I think that's a really cool a really cool competitive move to make especially now that they have a subscription service to back it up and just a few other things you know xbox has going for it right now, what they don't have is a bunch of exclusive watch games. Held out this long, i. mean it makes sense obviously in the game of chicken but this does seem like one of its greatest selling points semi pun intended. So it's It's interesting that the sticking them less long and obviously due to a leak initially before they owned the news themselves but it's a like mixed. It's a huge differentiator and definitely makes the the deal between the two of them the most significant thing for Microsoft. The value proposition, right? Yeah. The five hundred dollar version two is still like that's kind of what we expected this for some reason it's is I think it's really smart, not the delay but that they kind of. are talking about they talked about the s price at almost the same time because like that's all people were talking about like we would be talking about the PS five versus the xbox price right now as soon as bs five comes out, but there's always gonna be this this three, hundred dollar one and their people don't have to get the of the full one. It's just it's just a really interesting move I can't think of a precedent for at. A financing option to right. So yeah. That's just like another consumer friendly option that is clearly the a big corner cornerstone point for their entire next-gen lineup. Yeah we should definitely talk about that. That's xbox all access which allows you to get in on next generation xbox for as little as twenty five dollars a month for twenty four months you that over two years and that also gets you. Game Pass ultimate to get more than one hundred access to more than one hundred games plus every mega first party game day. One you get. So it's actually it. It seems to be like a staggering deal especially if what if? Halo infinite had been there at lunch twenty, five dollars for twenty five dollars. You got the new xbox and Halo Infinite Right on day one, it's unbelievable. Clearly, there's GonNa be some of those games that you don't care about including every first party game and including EA Games. Now, like that's basically like a price cut like you can imagine that console is sixty dollars even cheaper than the PS five is because you don't have to pay sixty dollars to get a little infant. Yeah the price of that subscription. It's it's amazing. It's really really cool I. Want I want to circle back on really underscores something that Sam said about the xbox series S. The thing that impresses me so much that I think is so smart. That it really did focus in on resolution like if you have a four K. TV like we opie seriously consider the series. But if you don't, if you're either plugging that thing into a monitor or you still have to be like the fact that the series s is pretty compromise free and that really that extra power is only being used to push you know these extra forecast pixels and law resolutions. The Games will just as good. I think that was very very clever and very savvy and consumer-friendly Gosh I don't have enough positive things to say about like that being the point of differentiation between these two consoles and like like I still don't actually have a four K. TV every year every every Christmas. This is the year but then it's like well, then there's then there's other new tech and there's HCR government maybe I'll just wait one more year and so like I'm still chugging away ten eighteen. And You know. So it's like I'm one of US consumers like Sino. I've seen some people wondering like well. It's like. Well, you know we exist for a wide variety of reasons I think it's like seventy percent of people that have consoles don't have a four. K. TV. As you say often use a projector and people find that confounding. Confounding because it's not as great resolution like you can still get a four K. projector and I do and like you know I I have really good setup, but ultimately, it's totally lighting based. So if you're in a bright living room, kind of does not make for a great experience, but you can have a huge. Screen the biggest screen out of any. Huge. Fun. T to do most of your gaming on a projector. That's how you do pre pandemic yeah. Okay Now more committed to a TV. TV. Okay. So a five, hundred, x, three, hundred

"Every day coming up with a new plan a new idea a new concept potentially new dates now I don't know that all these dates are supposed to be getting released but you know how it is these days you can't keep a secret nobody can come up with a plan without it hitting social media in some way shape or form because of sources so here we are and you know as recently as a week ago Major League Baseball was committed or at least the the leak had Major League Baseball committed to a season of at least one hundred games now if at least eighty games according to reports and we'll talk to Bob Nightengale of USA today who's right in the middle of all of this he's the one last week who wrote about the potential three division planned the Rick realignment that would take place just for twenty twenty so that baseball could really cut down on travel and mitigate the circumstances in which teams had to get on airplanes anyway baseball is constantly brainstorming having to pivot Hey that's and come up with different ideas the same for the NHL and for the NBA as well hello Brian James tweeted late last week that no one he knows is interested in canceling the season two is kind of pushing back on the reports went together reports and sources of general managers and others out there who say we you know we're moving forward as if the season is over at the four already in the offseason Steve Kerr said that last week but what a different case scenario for the gold state warriors of course because they have the NBA's worst record the broader thing nobody he knows is pushing for the season to be over everyone that he knows everyone that he's spoken to in the NBA community is anticipating the sports return to government turn my brain off no definitely not and so my question to you as we go through the show if the NBA returns crowned the champion if the NHL gets on the ice for the Stanley Cup playoffs or maybe they finish the regular season two we we don't know it's clearly going to have to take longer than what the season normally would be right now both those sports are talking about pushing back the start of next season until December of twenty twenty in order that they can get in the rest of this year and still give their athletes a break though they are getting a break right now Major League Baseball doesn't know when it will return so those team sports and really any other sport that you can think of that will crown a champion sure the twenty twenty titles come with asterisks it doesn't mean they don't count of course they count what will you look at them differently thus the proverbial asterisk so you can find me on Twitter a little radio also lots of good stuff owners are show Twitter is well.

Sony Clarifies PS5 Backward Compatibility

"Did mention sort of the one substantial actual bit of PS Five News. We got inbetween shows of course covered Mark Sunnis in-depth tech talk about the PS five. From last week that was originally meant to be. Gd Talk so if you didn't check out that episode you go listen to last week's to figure our thoughts on that a very complex discussion but after the fact. Sony updated their playstation blog. Post about this not once but twice to clarify some of the backward compatibility confusion that stemmed from was unclear about mark. Sunni's fifty minute long explanation. What could possibly leave room for clarification? Of course no. It was very buttoned up into the point and nothing uncertain for fans know there was some Scuttlebutt even having Turnley about whether or not cerny was discussing the fact that all of the library would be backward compatible and only one hundred games would be available launch or if only one hundred games would be available in the PS fives boost mood from ps four or some other combination of. Maybe we'll only actually get to play. Twenty Games backward compatible The update that the playstation blog actually put out was with all of the amazing games. Npr's catalog we've devoted significant efforts to enable our fans to play their favorites NPS five. We believe that the Omer overwhelming majority of the four thousand. Ps Four titles will be playable. Ps fought were expecting backward compatible. Titles will run any boosted frequency on. Ps five so that they can benefit from higher or more stable frame rates and potentially higher resolutions were currently evaluating Games on a title by title basis to spot any issues that need adjustment from the original software developers in his presentation. Mark Cerny provided a snapshot into the top one hundred most played ps four titles demonstrating. How well are backward? Compatibility efforts are going. We are have already tested. Hundreds of titles are preparing to thousands more as we move toward launch. We will provide updates on backward compatibility along with much more news in the months ahead. Stay tuned. So that's kind of worrisome. Honestly we dug into it a little bit last week but it it sort of makes me think that That fans are going to be finding problems in these games that weren't caught initially by Sony's in house developers and testers because the if they're going through on a case by case basis. I don't know if that's how the xbox hard works because their message was very clear of just like all the old games work here now whereas playstation they're like what we it seems like they basically prioritized that most played once the most popular ones Which is good. It's a good start Indefinitely better than the complete lack of backwards compatibility. We've had them. Ps Four but It makes it seemed like to me. You're going to play some like you know. Sort of niche game two years from now and find a bunch of technical hiccups in it. And then you're GONNA ask them the patch amount and they're going to say we don't. We can't justify the time and resources to do that. Like I have the playstation now APP. I don't know where I might have stuck that in the folder that might be just like pushed all the way down the train from other games of playing before it Because it's something I don't really use a lot but it's also like they. They've changed up the languaging on that a little bit when it started it was just like a streaming thing and now you can download some games and so I think they really need to scream from the rooftop sue and not just for people like awesome people listen to show but like you know con. Consumer Carl or whatever like the guy walks into a store. Yeah I mean like right now. You can download. Ps Four NPS Games and play them off line. And that's not really the thing that I think they're shouting about enough because I've thought about man. I would love to revisit some. Ps Two games. I don't have the chance to. I can download these re masters of the final fantasy games. When they're on sale but game passes get literally every remastered final fantasy game from the past like two generations. So why wouldn't I just wait to play

Sho Time: Angels' Shohei Ohtani Returns to Form

"We're talking about the angels and not Mike Trout Ouden. Gonzales covers baseball for ESPN. He was recently angels. Camp attract the recovery of two way superstar. Shohei Ohtani. Who's a big star might trout or Shohei Ohtani. I think Shohei is a bigger star. You should see just the media presence that follows him everywhere. They're like twenty Japanese reporters in spring training. Who are just like following him around everywhere. Unlike Mike. Trout doesn't have that people are interested like they're fascinated by this guy so you save time. He's back but he played last season. What do you mean when you say Otani is back? Shohei Otani is back to being the fullest version of himself. Couple years ago came early from Japan in his early twenties and he showed that a player can thrive the highest levels of the sport by being a very competent hitter. Sil- a lights out pitcher GONNA MISS DOT goes down nasty splitter straight down swing that last year spent the two thousand nine hundred nine season rehabbing from Tommy John Surgery while hitting in the lineup. Now starting around May of this season. We're going to see that two way sensation again. I don't think baseball has been excited about a player. A longtime. Why is there so much excitement around Shohei right now because we literally haven't seen this in a hundred years because it's new because maybe it gives us hope that we're gonNA continue to see this? From other athletes in the future. He was just scratching the surface of just how good he can be. And now we get a chance to see it for an entire year. That's incredibly exciting. Well we will get eventually just not at the start of the season right. Yeah so the angels are going to be very conservative with Shohei Ohtani. He had the Tommy John Surgery in October of two thousand eighteen. He had knee surgery in September of Twenty nineteen throughout April. He's GonNa serve as a designated hitter and because of the new rule that allows for two way players. He can go rehab on a minor league assignment as a pitcher in the meantime so he's going to be able to hit in their lineup. As a designated hitter you're probably bat cleanup or bat third behind Mike Trout. I'm going to say maybe four to five times a week and then at some point around the middle of May he's GonNa be a starting pitcher for them to the grand experiment will be back on basically. Yes this experiment. The wrong word. No I think experiment is still the right word because in so many ways the angels are sort of setting the blueprint for how something like this done. They have nothing else to go on except for maybe what he did in Japan which is completely different league. They don't travel across time zones in Japan. They don't play as many games. In Japan. Angels are doing this by themselves. He's going to start once a week. Not once every five games he is not going to hit either the day before he starts or the day after his starts and he's definitely not going to be in the line up on the day of his start so you're looking at twenty starts in the season maybe one hundred games in the lineup. Still a good amount but definitely going the conservative route there. Let's back up to win. Shohei I came to baseball two years ago. What were the expectations like for him? And why was he so special? Will those a lot of wonder about a guy attempting to do this? There was a lot of doubt definitely but a lot of the people scouted him in Japan. Came Away raving about this guy. His batting practices are the stuff of legend. He's incredibly fast. He might be just as fast as Mike Trout. And that's one thing that people don't talk about on the pitching side. The Guy Those one hundred miles an hour he throws a split finger. That's like one of the nastiest pitches that you'll ever see so you have a guy coming over here with that kind of talent and the fascinating thing about Shohei is. He shows up to spring training in two thousand eighteen. And he's awful. He can't get anybody out. Pitching seven runs in the inning. So not the day that. Otani was hoping for today here facing the rocky. Looks like a mess in the batter's box completely off balance chasing pitches. Here's the next delivery and that is a big swing and miss thereby and within like four to five weeks of him attempting to do this. You have scouts saying that he's not going to be able to hit in the major leagues. You have people saying that. He needs to start the season in the minors. You have people saying that the angels should completely scrap their plans of having him be a two way player and just let him try to develop as a pitcher. Because it's too hard to do it at this level and then all of a sudden the season starts and it's like a light switch goes off. Here's the next pitch and he lets well hidden and the right center.

"We think it's all of my six on six questions today I will say we'll save a good one for tomorrow talk about a lot more in doubt for that is if Michigan well Michigan will beat Ohio state when the big ten this year because open ended question or Michigan the failure of the hump this year losing all have stayed for the fifth year in a row and failing to make to Indy because what's that with a two year in a row I'm okay I heard I yeah under Harbaugh yeah so we'll get into that during our show tomorrow also have our preview of the Indiana Michigan's eleventh football opponents intern Country Club got got the arrange for for that interview so we got what to do you know who who who do we have what is it Osterman okay suite from Indiana out in the Star Tribune okay so he's a in in the star no okay indystar my mom my apologies are we have a little fun today on the six on six and joining us to answer a couple of the ones is majority owner owner partner order of the orange theories here in Ann Arbor and one call means to brighten this this fall is there a fourth one so we have to in an Arbor one in east Lansing one east Lansing yeah so yeah for how the forget these lancer right I'm I'm surprised just because I never go there I never ventured in east Lansing it's about an hour out and I know it's not you know your most favorite territory so I really don't like yeah yeah I know but you know what is it is good business that's right yeah it's yeah it's all different market for sure but it's definitely still fun is it mostly students in east Lansing there are a lot of students but there's a lot of you know people that live there as well and kind of the surrounding communities like you know okay miss and some you know bordering neighborhoods that a little further out people are definitely willing to drive a little bit more there than they are here okay so you know they'll they'll drive fifteen twenty minutes to go to lunch there as opposed to what you have to enter locations and so you don't you don't necessarily need to drive fifteen twenty exactly one closer to you exactly like obviously here is a little more difficult because you have downtown that spreads out the city south north and it can take thirty minutes to get four mile high yeah I can so so you know that's that obviously makes some sense so easily I think a little bit different where you can take some back roads and things like that that are a little easier you know mark sizeable yeah I'm trying to think like because I go to the orange theory on Plymouth road and it's there are just it's not there's no backroads against you have you got to go through the main glut of Ann Arbor you do to to give to place the place so yeah I came away for high speed trains to take us everywhere at some point it'll happen yeah all right so bright you're a gigantic Buffalo Bills fan so I joked that when I ask you this six on six question it would be about wish on McCoy Bruce Mathur Jim Jim Kelly what is your greatest personal sports achievement and from a six on six four things grades into what she meant by professional athletes so good questions and I know we texted back and forth about you know whole Sean McCoy thing and is he a hall of Famer and we'll get into that on another show but I do think and I know it's acts over here kind of smirk and like man we all this guy talks about is the built station yeah yeah yeah I stance on it right I don't know if he's he's pretty borderline what we'll see how it shakes on article said to my way of them so we'll see I mean they got some young players I still think he's in the plants regardless dance your question when I was in high school I was a big baseball player played a lot of baseball played through college but I think my biggest achievement and it wasn't like winning a championship or anything like that I would say from an individual perspective I had two consecutive games where I struck out ten plus okay a row tennis player batters in a row no no no sorry okay ten ten usernames of games in a row okay reason I got ten batters a large truck out ahead of time the first time in sixteen the second okay and they were back to back appearances and we won both games I think we won the first one I think like three to one and the second one is like one nothing okay and they were both you know pretty good teams and good hitting teams and at that point I you know I'd always played a position I wasn't really a a pitcher but that was kind of where I started my whole pitching career and found out I had a you know I don't have an overpowering fastball but it was something we're my curveball could really and we're gonna we're gonna push on one of these teams opposite sexism again striking out in softball so you can't strike out hi striking out in slow pitch softball because people do it I get it it happens but I know you have to be struck out softball other people in pa yeah I it's hard I'm I'm nervous that someone is out there is listening like that does have you ever played the sport then I guess that's fine but it's it's just it's hard for me to fathom right because it all it is is it the whole point of the sport is that your design to hit it and see what happens because we all you were talking about a baseball is like well you know you the zone you picture that ball looking like the size of a watermelon and softball it's the size of a cantaloupe it is it is it makes a little different our work I yeah obviously a little different trajectory but if you know how to hit a softball you should be able to reach there is to justifications for striking out slow pitch softball your eight beers deep I was gonna say drought on fire or you've never played the sport yeah fair anything in between that is a tale within your legs moment that is among your lows in your personal athletic achievement ago I'd so what is the greatest individual sports council by pro athlete you know I kind of went back and forth with this one you know and I think I am a baseball guy even though you know I think I follow football closer at this point in my life but I think the very greatest achievement in all of sports it's cal Ripken's consecutive game you know when I mean you talk about it when you know not even a brute you know he's bruise but he plays or or even getting a day off I mean you talk about twenty six hundred plus starts in a row I mean the next I think was Lou Gehrig was twenty one hundred games in a row that will never be broken and you talk about the the amount of I mean football obviously far but you know that's that's a little bit different and football as much harder on your body but you're still plan a hundred sixty two games I mean that is a insane grind yeah and and it wasn't that something even kept them out he just decided and so there is that we talk about all of it there is the fear that the recoil Orioles with a power hour it's canceled a game along the way because of it I mean there's some rumors about like what actually what cal Ripken wanna mess but even if you even if that's what one game but still he did on the front and the back and like twelve hundred road and fifteen hundred after it so right which could be true but I guess it's never been I still think that's pretty I felt I was a little I I I think Lou Gehrig was more impressive I think it was Rick can you know he knew the record was there there's actually a record that people are keeping track of felt like maybe they manufacture to read starring play in pincette ninety get out or whatever so Lou Gehrig I mean literally had to have a disease named after him impact him before he could stop playing with her sure any impressive treasure both extremely and yes as yet extremely and I would say the the other one and I don't know if I get two answers here but the other one has to be wilt chamberlain's hundred point game yeah I mean you look at like yeah the game and the era of when that happened yeah and you know that when shots yeah right and now and I mean how much time you have to score a hundred points like it's insane this was before the shot clock to ray yeah so you didn't teams could just like hang out of the ball forever and that we wouldn't score I mean you you sensually I I'm I'm never seen the game I don't know if there is what is out there but essentially came on the court give the ball you turn around starts to turn every time is what every time on the court he had to because you look at Kobe Bryant's eighty one point game yeah I felt like he I mean he could now he could shoot it under his legs from half court it was going in and he still only only and I quote scored eighty one points yeah as long as a good one expiring so Brett the last one here for you and we're talking about Barack the owner of three soon before orange theories in this area including both in Ann Arbor which you can learn more about by going orange three dot com actually or third fitness dot com thank you I can think of it anyway so we asked about Michigan beat Ohio state which you're welcome to say too but I know since you are Buffalo Bills fan so would you want to give for either Michigan beating Ohio state or the Buffalo Bills let's say well hell why not winning the Superbowl would you go would you give off a promotion a pay raise in a given year yeah would you give up a year vacation to have the bills won the Superbowl you can you do it a lot as a case I definitely do that would be tough but I mean you know I spend so much time energy you know a lot of just resources to follow that team and I think that would be I think that would be a I did be worth a year's vacation for sure your favorite food or drink for a year and yeah I I mean I think at this point it would it would trump that okay I mean that would just bring so much the food a you know when we eat pizza and things like that I love I think that would be the hard to give up but you know there's I I think I would do it and finally since before this is we're talking about for those with a strong incentive while giving up the NFL for just nineteen your for your college football for all of two thousand nineteen it's tough to I mean that doesn't those are Saturdays that you're you know you're out I mean that's what you do on Saturdays right even if you go to the game you're coming back to watch the other games are coming back to watch the night games you know C. N. Herbie on Saturday nights like I mean it's only for like Michael who who said that you could he I I'd offer him a thousand dollars that instead of watching the NFL he just goes to apple orchards and pumpkin patches for three hours every Sunday he does do that well that would be really I mean put you do that maybe maybe well I yeah I don't know that would be a tough one I would I would say yet to have the bills when the Superbowl with trump pretty much anything in that retrospect orange theory fitness dot com are good friends come back in will be one of our sponsors again this football season looking for to always enjoy.

Baseball union says poor job done of marketing Mookie Betts

"And yesterday the Union chief Tony Clark came out and he talked about how baseball's done a poor four job of marketing Red Sox outfielder Mookie Betts the quote from Tony Clark Monkey should be a household name. mookie should be a one name guy you say Rinaldo you say messy you say mookie you should know who mookie is and outside of the baseball world I don't know how many do you look. I think it's a fair point by Tony but again I go back to get into the room. Get in and start talking they for example we heard in in March that they had agreed to begin talking and then they had a meeting recently to talk about out there meetings and when they're going to talk it's just two and a half years into this and how many years of free agency have been affected by the fact that they haven't negotiated changes. You want the two sides who have a lot of things to talk about actually start it coming together and sustainably talking. I don't know if they actually will once they get in the same room. What do you think yeah this is about as angry as seen? The players are openly talking about Shrek. Someday you know obviously it's not gonna be this year next year. Maybe two thousand in twenty one but the players biggest complaint really is just a competitive balance. You know what five teams based lose one hundred games. I think there's what seven or eight games that are separate teams or twenty games back so you know and so the agency if you have all thirty teams front a win. It should speed up free agency rather than just a few teams doing it J._D.. Martinez talked about his thing. It was like a semi net myer because teams that need a power hitting bat just winning plucked talk cheaper guys off rebuilding teams so they didn't have to spend a hundred million dollars to get a look out to get a guy like Martinez so when we have events like this you know whether it's the winter meetings or at the All Star game at the world series you hear hear both sides talk about yeah we we're GONNA get into room.

"one hundred games" Discussed on Newsradio 700 WLW

"Could be seven teams lose one hundred games. Now, there are certainly exceptions to the rules. The twins are one of the big surprises in the game. The razor exceeding expectations is Ken writes, the Padres in White Sox are finally showing progress in their rebuilds that he writes, the reds remained in last place. Even after an active off season but are more competitive and a more interesting team. So he said in the piece, the union is is looking for ideas and the owners are looking for ideas, how to make baseball more competitive there. There's clearly I don't know if we want to call it the haves and have nots or the trying and not trying. But there's a clear separation divide in the game right now. And I think one obvious one is the fact there's not a salary cap. There's a team in major league baseball with the payroll of two hundred. Twenty six million. There's another team in baseball with the payroll of sixty two. I find that ridiculous. I find that insulting to the game. The average major league payrolls one hundred and thirty five million the reds are sitting at one twenty seven so they ranked sixteenth out of thirty teams in payroll. You can argue that there is a luxury tax right now in that works as a as a salary cap because teams know if they spend over two hundred and six million than they have to pay a tax. And that's why the dodgers made the Homer, Bailey. Matt Kemp SEO point. And they wanted to get under the luxury tax in theory. If you say you go to the, if the cap is to six you spend two hundred twenty then the amount, you go over you pay significant tax on. So there's an incentive to stay under that one of the problems in major league. Baseball is it's great. There's a luxury tax of the top. There needs to be a floor at the bottom. There's no way with a straight face. You could you should be able to sell major league baseball fans when one team spends two hundred and twenty six million and the other team spends sixty two on the opposite end of the scale, there's got to be a floor pick a number if the average is one thirty five they make your floor one twenty. Everybody's got to spend at least one twenty dropped below that you pay a penalty. Whatever the case is, we focus a lot on the cap at the top. There needs to be a focus on a floor at the bottom of all this, and look, there is a difference. The NFL and major league baseball. You can say salary cap. It's easy for the NFL to do a salary cap because there's no local TV deals. They have one giant TV deal in everybody gets the same amount of money. So the cap is the same for every team in major league baseball, the reds have their TV deal. The dodgers have their TV deal. The Padres have their TV deal and there there's a great disparity. The dodgers TV deals like two hundred million a year two hundred million for TV. I don't know. Honestly, if the reds is forty million, I have no idea what the rights is. I, I don't know if it's forty or fifty it's certainly not two hundred million. So I wonder I don't even know if how much the average fan thinks of this that there could be seven teams that lose one hundred games that there there's three divisions that are almost done that there appear to be teams that are trying that are tanking that are going for draft picks. I'd be interested. Five one three seven four nine seven thousand one eight hundred pounds seven hundred on AT and T in another part of this. I was looking at a list of this week of it was compiled by m o b trade rumors of the number of players that are shining this year on one year deals. And I know that's a hot button issue with a lot of fans who don't like guaranteed contracts. Look what and I'm not presenting this as guys are only trying hard because there's one year of their deal. I'm not saying that I'm just saying. Look at the performance. Derek Dietrich is giving on his one year contract. Look at what a glaze is doing on a one year contract. There are players. Right. This is a list of the top ten players this year working on one year deals. I know there's more than a few who say one of the problems in sports would be corrected if you made guys play year to year for their contract rather than give them the security in the knowledge that no matter what they do remember how well or how poorly they play they have their guaranteed money for three four five six seven years. We'll get into that as well. It is seven eighteen this is sports talk seven hundred wwl w with the iheartradio app. You.

"I'd say, well, I got a couple of months, truthfully. See if the bad comes around, but certainly he's on the other side of the mountain so to speak. There's no question about it belt needs a change of scenery. He's very good on this team. And if he did have a change of scenery, I think it'd be a very effective player. And that that's something that could happen. It could happen. There's no question in my mind when jet July thirty first comes around belt and Bumgarner would be the two most sought after players. I think on the giants and the other one is Crawford is unfortunately being wasted right now because he's still premier shortstops. Still swings the bat pretty well. But on this one he probably is is just not capable caring team. So those are I appreciate those the text. Honestly because those are things as we go through the first three months, four months, we'll see where they go. But you know, Houston lost one hundred games. And then next thing, you know, they were World Series champion. They lost hundred games three years in a row. The next thing you knew well pretty much that was like a it took them awhile. Well, they lost. The you can look it up. They lost one hundred games three years in a row than three years. Time. I know you don't wanna go through that here. You know, because you know, people in Houston sorta understood that they bought into it here be very difficult sell a totally different comparison. Well, the point is that they went through a changeover and eventually became world champions. And that's the way baseball works. All right. Let's go to Greg and Portland. Eight eight can't be our go ahead. Greg. Carbon pay. Thank you for putting the brakes on Marty. Here. Just like you. Well, you also baseball just just like you did a moment ago. I don't have a lot to add because the last hour or so in a very good show. Very good discussion it it is called to me. Dale walked me back. I was quite crabby at the end of the game. But. You brought up a point early in the show that I that. I just want to add to again, I don't have a lot to say because so much has already been said already. It's a trend that is so disturbing, and it seems we recognize it. But that's why after ten games, you know, three years it's going into third year. They they can't score runs and whether they're old or young they worked as old three year to two years ago. And now they're the oldest team in baseball. They just can't score runs and that's the trend. That's so disturbing to us fans. If they played the Tampa, the blueberry style, we're all talking about right now it wouldn't make any difference because they hit the ball. They could have seven outfielders in a battery. But they don't hit the ball. They don't score runs and it's been going on. Now. It's. Third season. And you know, we're bruised you touch that bruise you pull back, even though, you know, you should say, okay. It's only just a bruise, its, psychological. I admit it. I'm a fan of fanatic. But it's the trend. And I think I don't think I agree with you. I'm glad you brought that up. It's the trend. Well, it is it is. But you know, every season is different and they're healthier now. And look I'm not going to buy out of care. What we say? I'm not going to buy into. It's ten games of a season. And this is what you got for the next one hundred fifty two games. I'm just not going to do it. And I fell into that abyss last Sunday after the Padre surge, which was awful. I hated the Padre series. They look dead. And I said what what's going on here here in the opening of the season. And they got overwhelmed and couldn't get anything going. They still haven't scored in the first three innings. Good once yesterday in the third inning. They still can't believe it. For thirty three for the first two innings. Yeah. But I'm not going to I'm I'm not falling into that abyss this weekend. I'm just not going to do it. There's too much baseball left to be played. And and as Carmen said when they win or so you said when they went it's fun, then they win. They actually they win. They're good. So let's let it play out. And maybe they're going to win seventy games. Maybe the win eighty games. Maybe the win sixty five who knows what's going to happen. But the players are here. It's baseball. Let's see how it plays out. They're not getting killed there in the pitching's keeping them in the game. So it's a question of making something happen on the offensive side. And you're right. Greg two years the trend is there and here we are ten games into twenty nineteen thinking how is this ever going to end? Then all of a sudden you win five out of six and you think it's Christmas morning Carmen. Here. Don't don't let him do what he did yesterday where he painted you up a good attorney in court, he painted you up to be you know, this. Meaning that wanna kinda joke on in two months. But today's don't let them do that. Right now. Not what I say. It's the trend. That's disturbing. I'm not what he just said a moment ago. Yeah. I very. Hardy's very black and white to be or not to be. That's what I. Okay. Okay. Now Marty I'll make you feel good. What probably what you know. You're so contract say something nice, Dan, you'd say I'm being made. I I agree that belt is a player for now. Certainly to keep him everything you've said about belt at I agree with and Carmen, you're right about both. You both said longoria, lawns Milan-San. And if you could trade them, you know, that that sounded to me reasonable. It's all, you know, we'll see we'll see made sense to me and. Here's my six Therion, quote that I will go off. It's from Richard the third. I couldn't do hamlet three calls in the rural. Now is the winter of our discontent. Dirck? Isn't that game? That's another reason. I dark is. Oh, it's the weather. It's reflecting my mood. It has been raining here. Three days, and it's so dark, and it seems like it's old. It's about fifty and it's just depressing. And it's like what what's the quote, April is the cruellest month. You know, if you're if you're from up here the coastal north west it can rain for two or three days in April. And you think it's been raining for two or three. That's the way baseball works. They three in a row. Offense of production. So with that I'll talk to you next week. All right. Make sure you get your antidepressants. Don't forget them. I, you know, my anti depressant is. Yes, these exactly good conversation about baseball. And and Carmen, let's see if they can straightening three wouldn't together. Thanks, greg. Take care of. All right. That is Greg in Portland that I am happy when he calls back the next week that nothing's happened. He's fine. The pack northwest is a little bit gloomy. All right. All right DJ on a cell eight away. Can't be DJ. Calling from Saint Pete beach. So you're talking about our team here. Okay. Very good. Look, they were very impressive all weekend. Yeah. You guys, you know, you wondering why they all these crazy and. You know innovation. But like, I say, you know, necessity is the mother had mentioned they have no choice. They have to they have to do these crazy things to compete, and usually it works. I mean, if you look it up like the last ten years, they have the eight best record in baseball. And I believe the last eight years. There's like four teams that have won ninety games more than four times or more. And it's like the Red Sox dodgers and raise the differences, those teams two hundred million dollar payrolls and the raise payroll, so they have to do things that no one else is doing well, they're like the as in a way, except they kind of do it. I don't know maybe with less turmoil. So to speak in the organization, and yeah, it seems like look, I'm impressed. Then we had met Duffy on this morning. And you know, he he's sort of told us what was going to happen today. The way everyone moves around plays every different position. And by luck. They've got a bullpen. That is just bring in guys just in gas. They've got static who could start. He could be a bullpen guy. Just about every team in the league and his fourth and fifth spots where they use the opener they win. And then they got snow in glasnost and Morton as regular pitchers, and then they got this guy today. So I think. They're a force. We'll see how they if they score runs. But they're force. You'll have to score runs. You know, hopefully, save some money for the trade deadline's. They can get a big bat in the minor league system. Like you were saying they've got a couple of guys Honeywell and MacKay. We're like top twenty prospects in baseball that are starting pitching. So then they might go away from the starter. Eventually. So, you know, they do what they gotta do basically. Yeah. They do. I look it was fun to why it was a challenge to watch him. And I just thought of bocce watching what was happening on the field. They've standing with his arms on the dugout looking at the field as pitchers we're going to first and third baseman going to second. I basically going to third and I could see the wheels turning in his head watching this. But they have the personnel to pull it off. And I it was very interesting to say it. Well, it's fun. It's fun to watch. You never know. What's going to happen? I can tell you that they need to stadium. Don't they? Yeah. They do. They've got. You know, I like in the middle of July. I like walking into it. Because when you walk one hundred feet from the parking lot by the time you walk out hundred seat. You're drenched in sweat, and when you walk into that stadium the air conditioning feels great the the problem is it's not it's insane teeth. But it's not down by the waterfront. Now, the waterfront is one of the most hop. You know, no one's gonna believe this doesn't live here. But it's one of them are happening downtowns in the country along the waterfront, unfortunately, they put it sixteen the stadium sixteen blocks away, basically, maybe Ann Arbor hunters point. So, you know, the people aren't really liked going there and the people in Tampa, don't like driving across the bridge. Although it's certainly not as bad as your traffic, but they won't do it. So that's the that's the question. But the stadium itself, I know stuff hits the ceiling. But once you're in there, it's it's, you know, it's not, you know, it's not dollar whatever oracle. But it's it's you know, it's an enjoyable. It's enjoyable. Sitting there in the air conditioning without a bad seat. And you know, you know, Friday nights, they have a settle every promotion with seven.

"On this, man. He was a great player. But he's been ancient so much as I said as as we get further into the year, you know, it's not like it used to be where the Yankees if they wanted someone they just get them. I I don't I'm not I'm not that confident that they're going to get a Britain. I'll Machado at this point. I didn't want David Robertson. Yeah. You like Robinson all about the money and stuff. I was really shocked to read that considering, you know, his salvation, and all you know, the charity work he did. So you really don't notice who story behind that. But you know, he's headed mess, man. He's he he drives you crazy sometimes. So I'm not too worried about losing ham. I think someone else can fill in his role really want Britain. Well, you know, it seems to me the Yankees the the difference between the Hal Steinbrenner and George Steinbrenner Yankees the Yankees. Now are like, hey, we're the Yankees we one hundred games. We're good. You wanna play for us? Here's the deal. I wanna play for us. Or you think you might wanna play for us. If we give you the most money, we're not all interested. And I think that's what what Cashman is looking for. It's kind of attitude. It's kind of like, okay. You know, you wanna play in New York, you really want to be on the big stage. Want to be in the big ballpark in the South Bronx. That's we want guys who really want to be here. Not guys who are mercenaries who will just take the top dollar. And in Machado's Casey's I've been saying this a long he's gonna have a big decision to make whether the Phillies White Sox, whoever it is probably going to offer more money than the Yankees. And he's got a choice of going to one of those teams. Nothing wrong with him. If he does. But he does have a much better chance to win. If he plays in New York with the squad that they've got versus those other two teams. And know he always wanted to play in pinstripes. I mean, that's that's a nice out to players have always always wanted to be Yonki. Well, that's a good way to Jack up the price. If every if every other team thinks, oh, the Yankees are in on this. They're going to spend the money. I better I better up by anti here. I don't wanna take a chance. Maniac? Kids are are not playing with house minuses -sarily, but they're they're in control here. Now, they may wind up losing Britain. They might wind up losing anybody Machado. If they really if they really wanted him they could get him. I don't know that they really want him. I think they're they're they're looking at it like Stanton. You know, if he drops into our lap. We get them at the right price. Right. Number of years. Yeah. We'll take them. But you think about it? And when Gregori is comes back, and hopefully it'll be midway through the season. And you've got a third baseman and Andrew Harr. Who is I think a terrific young hitter? And may not be as good as Machado, homerun wise. But it'll be close and look at all the doubles. He hit and the Yankees really need more home runs after what they did last year. So the bottom line is you can get thi- with what you've got. Now, there's some certainly some ifs here if void is not what he looked like in thirty nine games last year. That's a small sample. But he looked great and fan. Do our has sophomore Jason Torres has that. And to Lewinsky is broke down piece of man, Roland. You might have some problems. I think the Antes are willing to take those chances IRA Staten Island, you're on the fan IRA. Hey, good morning. Pretty good. Pretty good. Real quick on totally agree with you about interior Brown songs discuss it. I adopted a king like you're suggesting. Here and I've been going with the chargers, I liked riverside. I like the eagles against the bears. But when they get from my coaching search because you know, what? Listen, even putting myself, you know, everybody, you know, is hot McCarthy. And when you coaching search interest on fire a coach in next one you have to do your do diligence and talk to other people you make different ideas wanting concerned about personally think they're waiting to see how the Baltimore fibrillation plays out. If they get either get knocked out if the ravens are going to end up trading rejecting they will this guy Matt rule. I heard a lot of things about here yesterday. I'm not saying that they should hire mR coach. But to this, you know, fire is ready to smoke or fire. And the thing that scares me about this is you know, how critical a higher it is. And maybe this guy, maybe he might be right. Tickets, but I just can't accept a coach. It doesn't have exposure experience. I know one strike against if I was talking with him. He would have to explain to me. I don't care how qualified here's how the world. Can you? We've Campbell hanging. Take the ballot job and not finish out your coach temple in the ballgame. You can't critic job it took another one and not finish out. What I started to and he left he left temple hanging by not coaching Applegate. Yeah. It's a character issue. You're absolutely right. And and you know, I think character does count, and I'm not saying necessarily morality where you know, you don't have a fair as with other women or stuff like that. I'm talking about you know, the kind of guy that honors is commitments. And does what he says and people that you can trust people that will look you any I tell you the truth, and I think that's really important. Any big time executive position. Because if you don't trust your coach to do the right thing, they tell you the right thing to do. That's what breeds dissension. And I think somebody that does something like that. You gotta wonder about thing. Yeah. I would be concerned about it. And almost like a little bit of a Josh mcdaniels colts left. Once again, maybe not rule will be the next Vince Lombardi, I certainly don't know. But the character and comes or something like that to me that strike you have you'd have to have a good explanation for me to go forward. Ask that question. You you. So you prefer an experienced guy that's done it before versus an assistant or a college guy fighting along those lines. Yeah. Strictly because I just think and then you structure and now. Turnover. I think they need somebody with a powerful resume to come in there and put his stamp on your organization, even though he'd be work over at mcalinden, but their players have to have respect to this coach sets coming in. On that line. I mean, he's coached in your division. He has had some success. And now, he's he's a strong willed guy for sure, but he's a good offensive guy. What do you think of him? Adam gates is very Eric Mangini. Like, I think he's a good coach he has very strong qualities about himself. But he doesn't get along with people. And that's that's an issue your people that it'd be walking X show the building. And you know, he he's not, you know, it's all about here in doesn't work. Well, with other people you have to wipe out the and qualities are no perfect Haida here that that's the one. Reports we think there won't be looking for for coach right there. Well, I think it's always there really unless you've got somebody that. Took a sabbatical and say, well, I'm going to take a year off. And then I'll come back big name a great coach that kind of thing. I don't know know look at chick. Was not a success in Cleveland and his second time around these obviously done pretty well. So he learned some things, but. I know may have gays. It prickly personality that just doesn't get along with anybody. That's that's obviously not gonna work. But maybe a learn, hey, you don't tell your owner often that, you know, more about football than he does it kind of pick your spots. I don't know. I mean, it's it's tough. And we're judging from the outside, you know, we're not in on these interviews. We're not seeing if these guys are impressive in the way, they present themselves versus just reading their resume on a piece of paper Mike in east Rockaway, maybe Mike should coach the jets. What do you think? Mike you want the job? Lockdown jet fan. Happy new year rich. Thank you. I was just gonna say the jets after Staten Island. I mean, I watched hostile for forty years. I've seen it all you know, to get a coach and one thing, but they need work on every phase of the game. And Todd Bowles. You know, we saw enough of him time to move on. And I think Mike McCarthy of all the people who have dust for if you've got a solid resume. We don't know. I just hope the Johnsons don't do what they did years ago where they fired the GM the offense coordinator the defensive coordinator. And it kept, you know, I call them the cartoon character Rex Ryan who sort of a before coaching ways pie in the sky. We're gonna do this. And that we just don't know. And hey, let's hope they catch something good around three. And I even saw the last game at Shea Stadium. Him looks. I bet Fancher rich when Terry Bradshaw. Steelers played the jets that was eighty three, but I've seen it all it's sort of expect the unexpected. If you're a met fan it adjusts that there who knows who they're going to hire me, they haven't given much indication and. You know, it's a trust issue. When you look at trust. You can almost always trust the jets to make the wrong move as opposed to the right move..

"First law on the hot stove league. Fire was lit yesterday. Is the Yankees traded for James Paxton, the big left handed starting pitcher of Seattle. He is Canadian. He's known as the big maple. And he went eleven and six last year with a three seven six which is good in the American League. He will fit quite nicely between Severino Tanaka. We'll on the Yankees now better than the Red Sox. No, first of all you have to base should the big maple is not in the big unit meaning the hospital. Right. I mean, he is on the disabled list six times in the last five seasons. Tony a lot. Several chips have been like half the season three and a half months. One time four months another time. I I understand why the Yankees would do this starting pitching is what they were thin at they needed to go and beef that up in the process, you know, I mean, a guy gets is sort of forgotten the Sheffield who also has a lot of talent. And I think is only twenty two years old. But I don't this does not in any way to me as close as they were with one hundred games one. Finish eight games behind the Red Sox. I don't think this allow because we just looked at the top teams in the NFL the top three teams in baseball the Red Sox. They one hundred eight the Astros they one hundred and three in the Yankees. They won one hundred the Yankees just got better. Did they get better than the Red Sox? No. The Red Sox went through the playoffs against the Yankees. The astros. The dodgers they lost one game in each round. They were eleven three against the best teams that were out there. And they answered every question about their starting pitching because Chris sale David price were very very little. So and they've got hitting. So are the Yankees better might they be as good they might be. But they are not better than the Red Sox. The first thing you have to answer about big maple is his health. And I'm sure that entire Brian Cashman brain trust is sitting around thinking about what to do to intimidate this after him off the Daniel. That's what they mean. They just starting. Regarding that sets for starting pitching. That's what they feel. So it is remarkable to me when you look at the how strong the American League is because I is I didn't mention Oakland. I didn't mention Tampa. Either mentioned Seattle. We're all good team. All real, absolutely. Let's take a break back. Stay tuned kids.
