Christine Todd Whitman on Biden's First 100 Days in Office
"Marks the first one hundred days in office for us. President joe biden so for the next five days. We'll be looking at some of the issues defined this time in office and hear opinions from across the political spectrum on how he's faring for today's first installment of our series we hear from christine. Todd whitman a former republican governor of new jersey and former head of the environmental protection agency or the epa. Under george w bush. She spoke with monaco's news editor. Chris chuck to offer her impressions of biden's first one hundred days in office and whether she thinks. Republican party is capable of change. Chris began by asking her what she thought of. Joe biden's presidency so far. I very much approve of the cabinet. Appointments he's made the finally a lot of competent people who understand their agencies in their what their portfolios include. I've been very pleased with the people that he has appointed a breadth of his appointments on relative to the environment and integrating environment climate. Change into everything to every and agency. Which is the only way we're going to deal with. This and climate is inability related with. What's happening to us a covert and i think they've done an excellent job in rolling out the vaccines. That's all been good. That part that i think has been less stellar has been dealing with the border because you knew that was going to be a crisis and it would have been helpful if they'd had a little more developed plan to deal with it before he came in because The message had been so negative toward immigrants under the trump administration. You have to believe that. Even if he didn't say anything and he being kept the borders closed there. Were still going to be people who say this another era and i'm desperate to get away from the horror that i live with every day which is absolutely true but as i say i like it as appointments like the fact that he's focused on the vaccines which he has to be to get the economy back. That's the first step the environment is if we don't start to do without intelligently we're going to continue to have these kind of issues plus the fact we know that we are paying billions of dollars every year and damage repair from these storms. That are occurring ever more and with more ferocity because of climate change so that is appropriate. Everything that's happening there. It's just been the border. That's been a bit a stutter. Start to say the least

White House offers new tax credit to help spur vaccinations
"Amid diminishing demand for covert nineteen shots the White House is offering businesses a tax incentive for giving employees paid leave to get vaccinated president Biden says he's heard some American workers have not receive shots because they can't afford to take a day off no working Americans should lose a single dollar from their paycheck because they chose to fulfill their patriotic duty of getting vaccinated so he says businesses can get tax breaks for providing paid time off not just for the shot but to deal with side effects he made the announcement while saying the U. S. is set to meet his goal of administering two hundred million shots within his first one Hundred Days in office the progress we've made has been stunning with more than half of adults at least partially vaccinated and everyone over sixteen and now eligible for shots Sager mag ani Washington
Hitting latest vaccine milestone, Biden pushes shots for all
"President Biden is set to announce the U. S. has nearly reached his latest goal for vaccinating Americans two hundred million shots administered in his first one Hundred Days more than half of all adults are now at least partially vaccinated maximizing the number of those fully vaccinated in coming months is crucial for a White House aiming to restore at least some normalcy around July fourth the president today is expected to outline plans for ramping up the vaccination rate all Americans sixteen and older are now eligible for shots and with roughly twenty eight million doses being delivered weekly demand is now a bigger road block then supply in much of the country surveys show less vaccine hesitancy since the shots began rolling out but the White House still wants to make getting them easier and more appealing Sager macaroni Washington

"President joe biden announced on thursday a new goal of administering two hundred million covid nineteen shots in his first one hundred days in office. The country was already on track to make that goal. It's already well on track to make the goal of two hundred million doses. He's setting the bar right at. What the country's going to hit. Anyway i mean that said it. It's been a terrific takeoff of the vaccine effort. It wasn't clear we were gonna have enough vaccines. They're rolling out a little bit slowly but boy. Biden leaves door open for Senate changes to advance agenda
"President Biden is promising big changes and suggesting he is open to changing Senate procedures to make them happen after opening yesterday's media news conference with the new goal for covert nineteen vaccinations two hundred million in his first one Hundred Days the president was asked no questions about the pandemic instead he faced to swoop on immigration gun control voting rights I'm gonna do with all those problems but he has a razor thin majority in the Senate and is leaving the door open to reforming rules that would allow bills to pass with fewer votes if we have to if there's complete lockdown in chaos as he grapples with immediate issues the seventy eight year old president also said for the first time he plans to run for re election but again the left open the possibility of leaving after a single term Sager mag ani Washington

We don't have enough computer chips
"The pandemic cause lots of shortages from personal protective equipment to laptops bicycles but one supply shortage. Could slow down the economy for months. Even after covid is gone. That's the global shortage of chips. Not lay's chips but semi conductor chips the types of silicon power everything from our computers to our cars recode rebecca. Hi awhile has been covering the shortage. Hair becca hey so. This feels like the sort of niche problem. But semiconductors are in everything so tell me what exactly a semi conductor is. Semiconductors or ships are basically the building block of all the devices that we're using today. You know the computers in your refrigerator or the computers in your car phones and many computer. All of that is being made with these tiny little chips. That are powering these technologies and the really important. because we don't just need them for entertainment. We need them to work and learn and especially during the pandemic when we're doing all of these things from home and you not only have your devices at school or your office. Many people also have a full second Electronics setup at their house and what kind of problems is a chip shortage. Going to cause like talk me through. How does this play out in in the world that we experience in the world. We care about in everyday life so broadly. The increase in demand for electronics in general means that we don't have enough chips actually make those electrons so if you weren't getting a laptop on time or a phone on time that you really needed that's how it would affect you. But in the united states there's this particular challenge that's popped up with the automakers. Obviously automakers are really important and the shortage in chips is actually delaying production of cars and some models from gm or actually not going to be running with an advanced fuel technology system right now because the carmakers can't get the chip that they need so we're seeing idle workers in the united states. Some workers being laid off because of this chip shortage. But you know it's not just cars. Samsung is talking about delays with their phones their medical device makers who have asked for help because they also are worried about the chip shortage. So this is really a very very big issue for all sorts of things that we do told about why this is happening. And how did covid cause or accelerate the shortage in the first place so the primary cause for the shortage is the increase in demand in an industry. That isn't that flexible. In terms of how much it can make talking to semiconductor. They say the lead time can be you know over twenty twenty five weeks to make one of these chips so it's not an an industry that can just flip. The switch in terms of of making more another challenge is that we're dealing with incredibly complicated supply chains and there are just a few companies that have the infrastructure and very very expensive infrastructure to make these chips but they need to get materials from other companies. There's also a he does some trump tara trade policies that are making the market. Even little bit more constricted. The us has not really developed a very strong backup system of its own supply. Chain has just twelve percent of global manufacturing in the sector and you used to have nearly forty percent back in the nineteen nineties so we really haven't focused on our own. Us domestic manufacturing of these chips. Which sort of is making a lot of people nervous right now. Especially you know the car makers but you know all sorts of Device makers in the united states right now and. What can we do about that. We can't go back from twelve percent of forty percent overnight. What are people who think about the future of the auto industry governors people who have jobs and the line people who have angry customers calling. What are they doing about this. The biden administration has ordered a giant review of the semiconductor supply chain part of a broader effort. That he's focused on and focus on his campaign as well to sign a boost the resilience of us supply chains. And for you know. We're in the midst of this now. But there's going to be one hundred day review of the semiconductor supply chain. And that's doing a lot of research with all the different chipmakers trying to figure out like where you get these components. What happened in this disaster scenario and really scoping out what this actually looks like. There is legislation that some people say really needs to be funded. That would actually incentivize building. High tech manufacturing in the united states for chips hasn't been funded yet. But that's something that some chipmakers really really wanna see but you know taking the step of the us government actively incentivizing companies to go away from building these trips abroad where it is cheaper. And they've done so for economic reasons and having them chips in the united states. That's a pretty big statement and that's going to be a lot of money and it doesn't always work out. well you could end up with empty factories factories. That aren't being used three years or five years down the line and for customers. What can we do beyond expect our products to take longer to get to us. You know in the gm case you might get that product but you might not get it with a feature that you really wanted mentioning the advanced fuel technology system which means that if you were trying to buy one of those gm trucks you might be paying a little bit more for gas in. That just might be the compromise. But you know it's a reminder to really pay attention to supply chain
Economy Revs Up as Americans Increase Spending on Flights, Lodging, Dining Out
"The lead story in the wall street journal this morning was economy revs up as americans increase spending on flights lodging and dining out and effectively. This is leading to big potential growth. Economists surveyed by the wall street journal raise their average twenty twenty one economic growth forecast to five point nine five percent up from four point eight seven percent in february. This would be the fastest pace. In four decades. And as i mentioned there are some specific indicators that the chief beneficiaries are travel experiences and hospitality experiences that were lost. "Americans have made their choice. Joe biden will be the next president of the united states dancing in the streets. Remember that saturday after the election when the networks called it for joe biden and the joy we all felt. It's one of the great days in american history. I believe the whole country. Just took us i of relief. Well we still have a lot to celebrate. But when biden sources oath of office on january twentieth he'll become president at a moment of historic social and economic upheaval. The cdc predicts over eighty thousand more people could die from the virus by the end of january recovery. John one hundred and forty thousand jobs lost in the month. And that is a big miss. Economists had trump mob storms capital forcing lawmakers into shelter and pretty much having their way with the capitol building until law enforcement speaker. Pelosi saying that if the president does not resign immediately then they will introduce their articles of impeachment. They pandemic a recession brewing instruction cited by the most destructive president in american history. It will be a lot to deal with. But that's why his first day in office will be so critical both to his legacy and the future of the country. I'm brian boiler and on the second season of rubicon. We'll tell the story of biden's first hundred days in office which will set the stage for his entire term. Americans have watched new president's carefully through their first hundred days in office. Since franklin roosevelt popularized the term decades ago king rather pleased with what has been a conference on the first one hundred days in the first one hundred days of these first hundred days. Now i know what some of you are thinking. There's nothing special about the one hundred day. Mark is no constitutional significance. It's just around number and that's true but the term gets it something as it's no and some learned the hard way a strong start can through a four year term. Early failures can be hard to recover from fighting us. Set a high standard for himself. One hundred million covid vaccine shots in the first one hundred days. This is about keeping americans afloat. Money's there. We're going to get back into the paris agreement the pathway to citizenship for over eleven million undocumented people in america but he also knows it won't be easy he'll have only the slimmest majority in congress and inherited government that the trump administration intentionally ransacked at the same time. The president has the power to set the national agenda the power to execute laws already on the books the power to seek accountability for public corruption that balance between power and its limits is what the second season of rubicon will be all about. We'll explain how biden chooses to navigate the crises hill inherit. That is how he'll use his power and we'll assess how well he did given those limits so join us our future hinges on what happens over the coming. I think it's you know, it's hard to watch that show as a bachelor because you do feel like so much is left out. And I know everyone says that, but it truly feels that way. When you watch it, you feel like, you know, you've read this amazing book and every detail and every moment, and then you watch this, you know. Tv version of it. That's highlighted the things that didn't jump out to you to begin with. It's you know, you just sort of disappointed when you watch it back 'cause you're like, oh, so we're shown that and that really meant a lot to me. We're conversation were replayed out. But I understand it's entertainment. I and our love story. I think was something that progress so late that, you know, to make it interesting for the viewer. They hit a lot of it. So that it was really dramatic at the end. And it was a big surprise. When really if they showed I think an accurate portrayal throughout the season. But I I noticed you know, they edit sort of things they start editing at the end, and I could tell when I changed my mind, and I ran back to Lauren is about episode three in the season. I could tell a huge shift and editing because they were like, oh, okay..

"You take one hundred days? I mean, it's not like you have to write something something, really hard. You mean everything's already repealed. Everything is perfect. Is that what you're saying? Everything's already perfect that I would say I'm finished. And get on that swell plane, which surely he does not deserve. There are as you know. I mean there there's not five minutes go by that. You don't think someone has to fix this like? It is inconceivable. Although it just happen that the president of the United States addresses, the UN and is laughed at. I mean. That's pretty astonishing. Especially to me who as your child. I had to childhood idols one was Leonard Bernstein, and one was Jack hammer shawl you've probably heard of Leonard Bernstein, you made out of her decks hammer thought he was the secretary general of the UN. I have many books by have his photograph on my refrigerator. And so I always think what would that commercial think of this when I was a child. Our class, you know, from school for tour of the UN, and I was like maybe nine years old, and I was incredibly excited because I thought I would see that hammer, Sean, and I had a book by about hammer, Sean, and I brought it with me, and we're walking around the UN, and it can take you. I was going to see him. And so a man in a suit walked.

"File yeah that's one hundred days is that's a lot at the big big challenge and i've seen so many people come through it and honestly i see tremendous growth in everyone that does it and i know i couldn't personally undertake but to see the results that come from it is really amazing so you have a post actually about that and i noticed when i was preparing the sepah so that you finished one hundred days code exactly a year ago on the day that this episode is going to here pretty cool so in that time i know that you've created more stuff in that you you've actually found a fronton job based on the strength of the skills right so yeah i mean allies happen i guess in years since then of hundred as a code was really good in like giving me a foundation of continuing to learn so i think when you first get into development you can get overwhelmed and think you have to learn everything right away and just being able to see like you know if i do just want our day little by little i can grow a whole bunch and i just feel like that still going on like even now when i'm trying to learn something i'll usually do whatever thing i see like right away but i kind of come back and like okay let me break down and just do a little every day kinda keep track on it especially code pin i mean i'm always just like building little things code bins i can go back.

"Very yes i was kind of doing those in tandem i started the one hundred days a code i kinda always look for like supportive communities whenever i'm trying to learn something and i saw one hundred as a code and i started that but i still didn't really have direction on what projects to do and so that's my daily midges and a lot of us were doing both like you said we were kind of a group that were all kind of doing the same thing so i still follow a lot of the people who were doing them they're all doing like crazy amazing work and i it's interesting 'cause i tell like people ask me like how did you get a job and i'm like yeah i create art css i probably got a job because of that i mean it's a way to develop your skills in ten get yourself out there in the world so you know if you do with images that's also to go about it so one hundred days of code i actually have not taken that challenge i tried out some of the other ones but that is that like one hundred straight days of doing coats yet that's the concept behind employees have rules and they've kind of changed since the initial on so i don't i'm not a hundred on all the rules now but you would coat every day for an hour and it would have to be a project so wouldn't be too to'real you couldn't just like those onto toils learning you had to actually be a project for an hour a day internet's so that was what i did it.
