Sean Davis: How Gingrich, Trump & DeSantis Stand Out
"He's probably the first governor in a long time to take on almost this Reagan esque profile Where Reagan didn't use the mild color he told for bold color differences between the parties you know Desantis has done that down here in Florida won by a landslide He took on the culture wars He took on the tax debate He took on big business things we should be fighting while these other governors are winning by a hair in these blood red states I mean I really believe he's one of the first guys in a long time In decades who really understands what you just said that power is there in a political constitutional republic to be used not to be just sit there and caressed and petted like some kind of lapdog You absolutely read my mind because I was thinking of this Anna during our conversation about someone who's not been afraid And when you look I'll say over the last 20 years that Republican politicians who kind of understand the game three stand out to me First with gingrich who understood that you don't play the media's game When they come to you with false premises and lies you call them out on it and you take a big old dump on them in front of everyone Trump taught us that you can talk about issues the way normal people talk about them And you don't have to be cowed by people calling you names for saying obvious things like maybe we shouldn't be allowing the importation to murderers and drug cartels and all that And then I think the Santa's third his taught yes you can use power that you have won an election to do great things for the people in great things for the country And the only thing about desantis that disappoints me is that we don't have more governors doing exactly what he's doing There are governors and states who won by 20 or 30% Recall that desantis in this first election won by 10,000 votes And there's people who won by orders of magnitude more than that who are just doing a fraction of what he's doing because they're timid and scared So my only disappointment with desantis is that we don't have more of him in every state in the country doing what he's doing

Mark Morgan Reflects on DeSantis' Migrant Transfer
"Because I haven't asked you in the beginning, mister G and I who has a very good political sense. We looked at the abbot desantis busing migrants thing as a kind of cheap stunt, what difference does it make when you've got millions flooding across the border? But when it arrived in Martha's Vineyard and he saw the national God being mobilized to get him off and get him into a camp, what did you think of that little political play? So I thought, so I was kind of in the dissented opinion when first governor Abbott had it. I actually said it was genius. Oh, you did? I did. Because look, his goal was he knew that wasn't going to change what was happening in southwest border. But what he knew was that it was going to keep it in the top fold. And it was going to show the left that their hypocrisy. And just when I thought governor Abbott had done a good job, and then governor desantis goes, he just kind of won the ups him, right? By sending Martha vineyard. An area probably one of the most richest enclaves and the face of the planet, right? And part of their, they actually billboards as part of their mission statement saying, we welcome and everybody. They have it right there in the harbor. We welcome all immigrants. They couldn't, they couldn't corral them up fast enough and get them out of there so fast. Would have been a camp. Military. Military camp. So one, just a hypocrisy, but I tell you what. I did more interviews. And the 30 days following that, then I had probably 60 days. Sorry, what? If you got people to talk about the border. Even the mainstream media. So

Charlie Dives Into Nevada Politics
"Republicans can win Senate races in Nevada. I believe his name was dean Heller recently. Was a senator from Nevada. An Adam laxalt is shocking the world Nevada has all of a sudden become this sleeper race where Democrats are almost beginning to expect a loss in the state of Nevada. So there's a couple things happening in Nevada. Number one, governor sisolak is one of the worst governors in America. He's a Democrat governor. And he has a lot of resentment brewing in Nevada because of how he inappropriately locked down the casino and gaming industry, how he went full Gestapo a lot of people lost their jobs. A lot of people lost their livelihoods, a lot of people never got back to where they were. There is serious financial misery that is all over Clark county. All over Clark county, ollo and Clark county's the biggest county in Nevada. And so the gaming industry in particular was just destroyed by Sicily, which is a massive amount of jobs now, you know, casino gambling might not be your thing. That's not the point. The point is that it's an economic engine and there's so many other things, so many other industries that are supported outside of just not casino gaming. Restaurants, entertainment shows, plays, all sorts of different things. Sporting events, conventions, a lot of stuff happens in Vegas outside of just the stereotypical stuff, which is this, by the way, to very depraved place in certain sense. But so is every American city. And I think there's some wonderful people in Vegas, and I know them, and I have dear Friends there. But they destroy that industry inappropriately unnecessarily. That's number one. Number two, Nevada has seen a significant increase in out of state people coming from California. And a lot of them have been Republicans. A lot of them are not necessarily coming to Nevada just to go vote for Democrats. A lot of that growth has been in the Lake Tahoe area or the Reno area or an especially in the Vegas area, the summit area.

Facts Have to Matter With Daniel Horowitz
"At some point, facts have to matter. Elaborate on that point. You're talking about facts matter. We have to follow the truth no matter where it leads us. Daniel Horowitz elaborate on that. Sure, I'm speaking to Republicans. Democrats obviously they're part of the genocide. The problem with Republicans is this. Facts, they're impervious to facts as much as the Democrats are. Because they set up this image that they want to evince to the public. This is the nice Goldilocks thing. I oppose mandates, but I love anything called a vaccine. And that's where they are right now. And obviously as you all know, when you're doing that, you're not effectively opposing the mandate. It's either hence we still have the military mandates in the worst things. Kidney transplants being denied and they're not doing anything about it. But the problem with that, as I said, I said, you'll be made to care. At some point, you can allow anti vax to become the new racism. At some point, it has to matter. Thomas solely used to say this on a legal immigration. People would be like, I'm pro immigrant, and he's like, I'm pro shoes. He wrote a column like 6, 7 years ago, the abstract immigrant. You know, well, the details matter. I mean, okay, like, I love vaccines. Okay, but this one has over a million adverse events reported to VAERS over 30,000 deaths over 200,000 hospitalizations and over 14,000 categories of maladies, and we know it's woefully under reported because it's so impossible to fill it out. So it's like, Jude, we kind of got a problem here. And then they say, now we're going to introduce it on babies and I thought, okay, they're going to rebel. And there was no one home. It was one governor, the Florida governor opposed it every other one and promotes it. And in the Senate was wrong John and maybe Rand Paul and that was

How Should Parents Push Back Against the Vaccine for Toddlers?
"Charlie, I have very serious reservations about giving the vaccine in my two year old son. But I know my pediatrician will likely recommend it now that the FDA has approved. What are your thoughts? Is there anyone pushing back against this? So look, I just want to reiterate that vaccine companies have pushed this on a little kids because they want to get it onto the official childhood schedule vaccination schedule for liability protection. Similar to the WHO story that we've talked about and covered in great detail, states can push back against this and there is one governor who is pushing back against this. It is governor Ron DeSantis. Governor Ron DeSantis is pushing back against the bio medical corporate pharma fascist regime. And saying, this is the line. We're not going to do this. There is no reason whatsoever. To inoculate 6 month to 5 year olds. Against a virus that they are not dying from. You are injecting a gene therapy that is called a vaccine. Doctor Cole is just in our program and he walked through all the risks associated with it. We've had doctor Malone do the same thing. Doctor McCullough do the same thing. And Ron DeSantis is saying, I'm not just going to keep on going along for the next thing. We're not just going to keep on falling for the phase three experimental gene therapy. Now if you got vaccinated and if you believe in the vaccine, fine. That's your choice. But we're talking about children that don't have a choice. And some parents are going to be pressured by doctors by institutions, to give a vaccine against a virus that does not pose a significant risk for them.

"Razor thin majorities in Congress, Reuters says. Plus, it could also spell the end of Mr Newsom's political ambitions widely believed to include possible runs for the U. S Senate or The presidency. Governor Newsom today will be the first governor in a recall election to face voters divided over covid restrictions. State leaders around the U. S have exercised broad authority to try to safeguard the health and well being of both the residents and economies over the past 18 months, including decisions that have drawn fire from all sides. As Christine my duck at the Wall Street Journal reports. Mr Newsome's performance will be the first judged by voters. Christine Set this up recalls are not new to governors in California. Mr Newsome had, you know, faced several recall attempts already, But really, what was key here is that this recall attempt got off the ground and got extra time right at a time when the pandemic was getting worse last fall right at a time when Gavin Newsom was shown In news reports to be eating at the French laundry in Napa Valley without a mask and with other people outside his household. Just when he was telling other people to do the exact opposite. So, um, this really kind of, um started with a lot of people angry about his restrictions, a lot of people angry about his shutdowns and really ballooned from there, and to a campaign that's also touched on homelessness also touched on the housing crisis on wild fires in the state and just general what they A feels mismanagement of the state, but it really did get it start through frustration about his covid policies. How did it come to encompass other things? Is that just the nature of politics? I mean, I think that's the nature of California. There's a lot of things to be frustrated about in California. It is a very dynamic economy. It is a very dynamic place. But that said, you know, income inequality is pretty severe here. Um, housing prices are through the roof, and that's only gotten worse during the pandemic, something that's interesting about California. It is. Even in the midst of the pandemic. When we thought we were going to be facing a huge budget shortfall, California had a record budget surplus. And why is that Because the state is very reliant on income taxes on high earners and those high earners who mostly were staying home, who mostly didn't Luther jobs maybe even more money because the housing market went up because investments went up, so it is, you know, kind of this all encompassing campaign because there are so many issues that are thorny and LIFFE, Oranje. Because there are so many challenges facing it. We're speaking with Christine, My duck reporter at The Wall Street Journal. Her pieces called California Recall puts Governors Pandemic leadership to the test. There was a point Somebody made your story too about. It's the closest thing we have to a referendum on how we should deal with Covid. What do you mean? Well, really, I mean, this kind of political Rorschach tests that we have is across the country in terms of covid policies, right? I mean, depending on kind of which starts side of partisan divide. You are how seriously you're taking covid. Whether or not you're likely to get vaccinated or believe in things like mask mandates or vaccine mandates. That's all very partisan and device to these days. And so, you know, Gavin Newsom is the first governor who's going to face an electorate that Like focused a lot on that. So that's really what we're talking about here. In terms of, you know, he took a very hard line very early to, um, you know, camp down on restrictions on kind of widespread lockdowns and business shutdowns, and he got a lot of flak from that from people. Other people who, um, support him say that those moves are what helps California avoid. The kinds of death rates in case rates that we see right now across the country and some of the other Red states. It's kind of all in for Democrats here, isn't it because there's no Significant Democratic challengers on the list of what 45 something potential replacements for Mr Newsome. There are 46 candidates on the ballot to replace him, and none of them are prominent Democrats who are well known in Democratic Party. And yes, that is, uh, that was a very, um deliberate strategy by the California Democratic Party and by Gavin Newsom's campaign to discourage any prominent Democrat from getting in, and they were very much, um, banking on people to just Vote. No leave the second question blank. Which actually made a lot of Democratic voters nervous because you know, a few weeks ago, it was not at all clear that Gavin Newsom was going to beat this, Uh, recall, and people were very nervous giving up that choice and you say earlier on in our conversation. He's been the target of recalls before not elections, obviously, but recall efforts That's correct. And actually, that's not new in California. Every California governor since 1960 has faced some kind of recall effort. Thanks, Christine Christine my duck at the Wall Street Journal 14..

"What's going on here is it's legal. Is it legal in Detroit? I guess Michigan I'm assuming so somebody is saying that they, uh they had to jump through too many hoops to get certified and have a location applications and things like that, because the law favors some owners over other owners. True, So basically, it's a city ordinance and that the issue is, uh, handing out dispensary licenses to you know, they can't give it. You know, they can't give it to everybody in the world that applies. And so they have some sort of what I would call roadblocks along the way that shows preference and gives preference to certain applicants for the marijuana dispensaries, namely, Legacy residents. Oh, lived there 15 years or longer. Well, you know, and so the so let's look at what the reason would be if you're thinking in Detroit, um, we don't want we don't want people moving here just to open these dispensaries up because maybe it's the only area in the, uh in them. I don't know why they would decide, you know. Not to do that. But do you think that it's legal? I mean in America? Is there overriding stuff? Should I be able to move to Detroit and open a marijuana dispensary? If I'm not a felon or whatever. Well, technically, you know, when you're when you look at the Constitution, it's sort of like an equal protection argument. You can't treat one citizen differently than another citizen. Uh, there's got to be a rational basis for it. And so, you know, they're just saying that you can't show favouritism over one applicant over another right? I guess the the rational basis that they're trying to show is is they don't want so to speak these carpetbaggers from other poor portions of the country. That already owned 20 or 30 or 50 dispensaries, just swooping. Oh, they're afraid of big marijuana. That's what it is. There's some sort of. I mean, that seems silly, but obviously there are moneyed people behind this. Uh you know what? That Willie Nelson coming in from Texas taking over? Yes. Going to ask you a question, George about you know you, You're you're dealing with the law every day. My sense is that Marijuana will be legal everywhere within 10 years. Do you think it'll be my wrong was gonna be longer than that. Do you think it be shorter than that? I think of me a lot shorter than that, too, Because You know, I think the genie is out of the bottle as far as the taxation benefits. Uh and yeah, one state when one governor talked to the next governor, Yeah. Hey, Look what you're missing out on all these governors are super moral about gambling and marijuana until they find out how much revenue can be brought in. Turns out you bring in more revenue. You can fund more things You get reelected. Oh, you know what? My room I don't think it's a question of morality. But that's the reason it's always kept out right as well. We don't want to, you know, given the, uh, no alcohol is available to everyone, but we don't want to allow this. To get out of hand. It also like gambling. Keep in mind in Georgia Love. We just recently relaxed the Sunday alcohol. Yeah. Interesting laws. So So, yeah, there were a few years behind, but I suspect the next three years or so there'll be a federal law under this administration that that will be passed. Good question. Now, let's say the Biden administration the Congress as it stands now, let's say that they now they can't make a federal law that tells every state it has to be legal what they do. As they can say, from the federal point of view, it is no longer illegal. But then it would still be up state to state to decide right. True, But you know, the state has excuse me. The federal government has ways to bring states into line. Uh, if they want to would saying, Well, listen. That's fine, but we may hold up some sort of some sort of federal funding the 21 years. That's what Ronald Reagan did that. So I started to question the whole, uh Ronald Reagan. Leave it up to the states thing was when they moved it from 19 to 21 went from 18 to 19 then went from 19 to 21, at least in New York state, and then the federal where I was at the time, and then the federal government.

Megan hickey there's been a lot of confusion at the united center about who exactly has been eligible. The city has changed. Its eligibility standards because so many folks from outside of chicago or signing up as of now who is eligible to get the vaccine at the united center right now. They're still in the one. A one b Young people within the city limits and really the rules changed in the middle of the game because obviously when people started signing up it was a much broader eligibility than that and that was honestly source of a lot of confusion over the weekend and even into monday and tuesday because you know the the eligibility requirements changed in a lot of the people who maybe were outside of chicago who had signed up. Were confused they do. What does my appointment still count. If i go there you know my still going to be able to get my second dose. Are they going to say good luck. Find it somewhere else so there were just a lot. We were getting a lot of confusion about that and you know that on top of some scheduling issues. People getting error messages when they were trying to sign up. You know saying oh no actually. Your appointments been rescheduled and then another email saying disregard that that email was was not It's not accurate so meghan or those. Yeah i'm still ongoing. Or if they have the iron those out we're hearing less you know less confusion about it. I'm i'm not certain that it's been entirely ironed out. I know we asked how many people got error messages. How many people were involved in that which we never actually got a hard number on that but just being out there. I was at the united center. Monday on tuesday monday. Even before you know nations had started a lot of people were complaining about that. But i will say once. They made their way through the vaccination processing came out on the other end. They were so grateful and hopeful and almost had forgotten that they were so Set before they had gone into. Get their shot in greg pratt part of this roll out. The city says now they will be reaching out to the hardest hit zip codes to urge people to come to the united center to get their vaccination. Is that helping at all. drive up the equity numbers. Yeah i think so. I think the making it eligible for neighborhoods like south shore little villages. Ellison is is clearly going to drive that up there are people from those neighborhoods who are signing up for it I think that that's been very helpful. That was major problem in the beginning. It's less of a problem but it's probably one of those things that without more. Without ongoing targeting an ongoing efforts aimed at reaching those communities can very easily all off. Which would be bad. So it's so it's so they're they're working consciously work on an and that's probably a good thing

He and his family and the Finance Minister and Bill Maher. Now both have personal and family ties to this charity and should have recused themselves. I don't think that. The, the picture, four Canadians by I think that picture. is becoming more and more for. Canadians. Like. An elite privilege class squabbling over not being able to work together and I think that really does not play well, obviously trudeau lost. His majority after the last election and who knows where it's it's going from here because it doesn't seem like he's going to be able to keep some of his top ministers around for very long?

The Big Picture
The movie of the year is here: Boys State
"Sean Fantasy. And this is the big picture conversation show but the best movie I've seen in twenty twenty. That movie is called boy state. What is boy state? Well, it's a documentary. It is now available on Apple TV plus and I thought it would be appropriate for us to just talk about this film which I think is fascinating and incredible document of life in twenty twenty in many ways. Specifically, the way that we engage with our political system Amanda I wanted to talk to you about it because I know that you like the. Film as well. We're GONNA. Talk a bit about what boy state is the institution, and also what this movie isn't how it captures it but what did you make of it off the top see you saw this movie at Sundance as did our colleague Noam Away and you both raved about it and I didn't get to see that sundance so I caught up with it about six months later with all of the expectation that goes along with you guys being this is the best we've ever seen I was wrapped. This is A. Very documentary that is about each. Summer Camp Robert Graham, and we'll explain the program a bit more. It's Kinda complex. I still have some questions about how boy state the Summer Camp Program works but whatever. And I was just completely in Michigan. It's one of those documentaries where you're like I can't believe you got this on tape and also I can't believe that you've got this on tape and also it speaks so profoundly to the moment in which I'm watching it even though it was filmed during the summer of two, thousand and eighteen. Yell leader in this episode, and you can hear a conversation with me and Amanda mcbain and Jesse Moss the filmmakers behind the movie and they explained a bit about how they captured what you're describing, and there are several moments in this movie that will make you say this is must be scripted. This can't be real. I mean in many ways it seems. Like archetypal narrative, dramatic movie making, but it is very real and boy state. The institution is very real. So what is boy state? It's it is as you say, it's a sort of a summer camp. It's a, it's a summer leadership program I assume you as a as a high achieving young person. You must have been a part of some some programs. Like this I get sent to Arts Camp I. Never did the Politics Camp I did have to go to girl scout camp once even though it wasn't a girl Scout, but this is sponsored by the American Legion and I only really interacted with the American Legion. In that. Sometimes, we had our middle school dances at an American Legion clubhouse. Okay. So the American Legion does sponsor this program they nominate High. School Juniors and they come in the interview and they talk about their idea of the country and patriotism and the idea of public service that means to them, and it's essentially a training program for politicos aspiring Politicos, and that's a fascinating thing growing up I went to basketball camp. I was an aspiring. Professional Basketball player unfortunately I am incredibly slow and can't jump and can't shoot. So that's that was never going to happen for me, and for some people at boys anger, there is a girl state as well. We should say that you know in in most states in this country, they offer this program. There are a lot of people who aspire to kind of public service or at least to get a a sort of a sense of civic duty, which is not necessarily the same thing as public service. And this has been happening since nineteen, thirty seven. And the. There is a long list of famous and accomplished alumni in boys and girls stayed more specifically boy stated won't probably won't surprise people to hear. Just a shortlist of incredibly well known people who participated in this program includes Bill Clinton Dick Cheney. Justice Samuel Alito James Gandolfini my boy. Roger Ebert. Michael Jordan. Tom Cotton. Rush Limbaugh Cory Booker. So you know luminaries or lowlights depending on your point of view of the world. This is quite a quite a list of people there and the program itself is kind of interesting. So essentially, I, feel like we're talking around specifically what it does, but the programs vary by state but in Texas where this movie takes place participants are divided into two groups. The federal and the nationalist and what are the what are these two groups have to do and and how does that set up the Phil Do a lot of things but the film follows the political campaign aspect of boy state and boy state is a week long program in Texas and kind of the climactic event is an election for governor of the state, the boys state of Texas. So these two parties, the federalists in the nationalist, which by the way just already casts a quite a shadow over the whole. The. The documentary because they really they adopt these names as teams, and so they're yelling about being federalists and nationalists and anyway. At they elect. Party chairman's they they kind of do a platform that we should talk about the platform they have primaries and they each eventually select one nominee for the governor's race, and then at the end, there is election and one governor emerges. So you know approximately eleven hundred boys participate in this process, and that means that out of large groups. One two three people have to merge and the reason that this movie happened and the reason that Jesse and Amanda sought to identify a handful of people who'd be significant to the process in the given year that they were shooting is because in two thousand, seventeen Texas boys state legislature voted to secede from the Union and that if that doesn't some American politics in the trump era I don't I don't know what does the fact that it was your teenagers decided they needed to succeed from a program which is already imaginary. Is Perfect, we should note that two thousand seventeen was when the state legislature of Texas successfully voted to see from union. It is apparently a emotion that came up for several years but this time both bodies ratified this action, and of course, that is a an ongoing dialogue in the state of Texas. In the true American experience you know there are many Texans who would like to not be a part of this country maybe not many there but there are certainly some we know that that's the session is an ongoing conversation in some states. Around the country. So the point is, is that boy stayed in many ways reflect the political system or does it? It's I think the nature or nurture question here is essential to this movie and what makes it so fascinating and even when I talk to Amanda and Jesse I, think that they were unwilling to put their thumb on the scale to say what were they felt it lived or died but as I said, this movie is just exceptional and
