"Online email campaigns because it's really low hanging fruit to have all these customers and email addresses, but not doing much with them online. So I mean, that's a lot of confidence right there from the group bringing you on to help these companies that our companies people are investing and hoping that they're going to exit and sell in the investors are going to make money on that. And you wouldn't have gotten that opportunity probably if you hadn't been in the group. No, yeah. I mean, Joel is a very good guy. I like him. I had heard about him, obviously, because he's an email guy, and then I got on the phone with him, and he was like, hey, it's going to be a heart of a grant to join our group and I was like, uh oh. But he's like, yeah, I mean, if you come in, you do a good job, like I'll connect you with the right people. And he's given me every opportunity and he's true to his word, and now I'm doing the same thing I was just on a little bit bigger stage with some companies that, you know, like you said, they're really good at retail. They're not quite as good online, and they're a bit timid to go a little more direct response, but then we ensure them it's going to be okay. And then now they're getting results. So they're very on board with it now. And we're just going to keep marching and helping more people and those companies are going to help their people. And it's just a cool group to be a part of and there's a lot of good people and I think that really we talked about it really just opens up yourself belief of what's possible. Just being around people that are doing big things, high achievers, high performers, and hearing about their results and success and struggles, realizing you're not alone with what you're going through and seeing people really accomplishing some awesome stuff. And then for me, it puts it in perspective that what I'm dealing with is not unique and not that big of a deal. I can go home and take care of this right away and get out of my own way. And if I wasn't around, these people that have been through the same stuff and beyond, it'd be a lot harder to kind of lead the pack and pave the way. Yeah, it's funny. There was one time I think I like message somebody and I was like, hey, I have this really unique situation where I'm struggling with blah blah blah and they're like, dude, you're not unique. And I was like, what do you mean? I'm special.

"Days off, you're going to be able to come back harder versus overtraining and not making as much progress. I think it holds true just as well for business. Yeah, I did pretty good at that when I played. I was rolling out every day. I didn't use a foam roller on a PVC pipe because I didn't feel the foam roller anymore. And just doing like every little thing trying to improve range of motion. And it was kind of hard because I never truly had a real day off, but I read the TB 12 book and I just went all in on that for all the little things that most people don't do. It's awesome. Have you seen the man in the arena? About half of it. I don't watch a lot of TV and movies and stuff, but that's a good one. I've seen about half and it's crazy. My favorite story ever, though, is just hopefully I don't botch any of the quotes. But Robert Kraft saw Tom on one of the first practices after he got drafted and he went up to him and he's like, I know you, you're Kyle Brady, because that was somebody else they drafted. He's like, no. My name's Tom Brady. I'm the best decision this organization has ever made. Straight to craft. That's awesome. What round round was he drafted in? 6. He was number one 99. I mean, that's some confidence right there, because that's guys don't always make the team drafted that low. Yeah, and it's crazy because you can see that he still has that, even though he's in his 40s. And it's crazy that he hasn't lost the dedication and still loves the game. And it's just very refreshing to see somebody that still cares at that level. Because there's a lot of people that can say that too. There's a lot of people who have said something similar to that, but they didn't make it. Yeah. So it's funny because you hear all these stories about it and it's like, well, a lot of people do say that. They just don't they don't back it up, whether it's work ethic or just like in my case, I worked hard but I just didn't make it. Well, there's a lot of factors involved in it, but I think the work ethic without that, I think, natural genetics or ability. It's only take you so far. That's going to be a short, a short career. If you don't have that work ethic that goes with it. So the perfect package is we have all of it, and it's rare. Yeah, you know, it's like I'm learning, still learning every day about myself, and there's still times where I think about my former life. But yeah, I'm a little more okay with it now. Sounds like you're a little more okay with a little not all the way. How do you know? 26. I'll tell you what, 26, I was in Sweden, playing football, not done, not letting it go.

"For joining us episode two 50. A very big milestone here for the strong by design podcast. And I hope the conclusion of this conversation is everything that part one had to offer. So enjoy and thank you so much for listening. So I was reading on your blog earlier and you talked about three focuses that you've had and how important focus is. How do you, how do you stay channeled in on what you're doing? Where you're focusing in on email and an email deliverability, email programs, but you've also said you're an entrepreneur. In this online space, that could go in so many different directions. Started with Facebook ads, you found something you're really good at, where there was a need in the marketplace. How do you stay focused on that? And why is that important? Yeah, focus is the only way you're going to grow. So the thing for me is really simple. But it's a little bit harder to do. You have to be good at being honest with yourself and catching yourself when you get off track. But the main thing is there's a lot of things we got to do, right? So anytime I repeat something too many times and I'm like, oh, this is inhibiting me from doing something that's going to grow. I need to give this to somebody else to do. And just train them. And it's kind of like building a skyscraper. You're on the first floor. And you can't really grow, but then you find other people after you figure out how to run the building. They manage the first floor. You go build a second floor. And then you find somebody else to manage. And you keep going up up up. So that's the key. I'm always trying to think about one to three things that are really going to move the needle for me and building that next level. And if I can't do it right now, that means I need to find somebody else to maintain the current level, and then go up. But right now, I just really need to scale. It's like everything we had a little bit of scaling issue last year toward the end.

The Dan Bongino Show
Jeff James: The Benefit of Reconfiguring a School Lobby
"Great Something as simple as configuring your lobby so that you have a captured entrance So if somebody gets through that first door say the person who's giving admittance is the secretary right Somebody pushes the button and says hey I'm here to pick up my kid They come through that first door And at that point the secretary sees something untoward That way they're trapped in there They would need to be granted access through that second door before they could gain entry to the building And look they can shoot through the glass and walk through like Lanza did it at sandy hook But what that does is buy some time And the other thing I advocate in all schools I coordinate security with is anyone in your school district should be able to call a lockdown I don't care if it's a maintenance guy if it's a secretary if it's a superintendent They should have a mechanism in place where if your maintenance guy sees a guy walking across your parking lot with a rifle he should be able to hit a button on his phone or get to a hard button or something and let everybody know to lock down right now Because if that secretary sees it but she has no mechanism to fix the problem then it's still that it's still a failure So yeah there are some cost low cost solutions that are sustainable that can be put in place And look you get it We talked about armored glasses heavy and it's hard and it's extremely expensive but it doesn't need to be all that There are other mitigations you could other things you could put in place that are almost cost free And the biggest one is training And you've heard me hit this button before It has to be a consistent constant thing that you're doing in your district several times a year to train your people to say not only this is what we're looking for if we see a guy with a gun But this is what we're looking for in behaviors Now people don't just snap In every one of these school shootings what always comes out their social media that they glorified Hitler that they glorified Columbine There is a clear pattern of behavior that leads people to the path toward violence that if you know what you're looking for it's easy to see

Let's just say ten years ago because it was before i was married and i've almost been married ten years now so i was hosting a club night for all the all star basketball game. That was in town at this. Particular club snoop dogg. Was there he was like in the vip section and everyone was talking about it and my sister in law. And i actually got invited to go back to the vip section. And we're like oh my gosh. How word snoop dogg hit is happening. This was like our mission at the point. Like i mean we were like this. Is we gotta make this happen. So we did go backstage. Vip section we met snoop We hung out with them for an hour or two and the whole time. We were sitting there begging him to let us smoke. He said no sober day because he said he didn't want to disrespect the club because he knew they like you know probably didn't want weed in the club because it wasn't exactly legal at that point but but we get a couple of really fun pictures and i did still consider it an honor that snoop dogg. Turn me down smoke weed story that so good story okay. Who else what's next. That's one story steffi. Pick somebody else Dante is also celebrity driven. So i think it was. I don't know what year was. But we were all doing the show from san diego and i was. I'm not a sports guy you know. I don't know much about sports And we were interviewing usher. And i remember the times they come in and they tell you what not to say you know to the celebrities and.

"Richer on the same page. Here really good gift for myself. So thank you for having a birthday. But i literally just finished the season and i do not look at steve curl the same way whatsoever. I can't even picture him in a new role like he plays predator in this ono series. And it's like he does it so well that it's very believable to me because it's gross. Yes that's crazy. gross vibes. Sure that's such a hard roll to like have to. Do you know what i mean. I'm sure that's a really tough working said no. He could've kept on doing comedies very true. I mean you've probably trying to spice it up a little bit though you know. Change his personnel. A little too well for sexual he can take years late. He say like ten roles. I don't know what Take right after that one movie with all soldiers know watched. Yeah do you remember. Tell you how could this was. I and i and i refused to get because it's just there's too many streaming services but it's good though. I'm glad you saw down. Yeah and i think the new season starts this weekend. What about the episode of ted lasso. Emotional socred yeah. Yeah 'cause there's a romantic coal relationship that you kinda get to see half air kind of the show. Hasn't disappointed me. Where this with storylines. But there's there's two storylines that they unveiled that. I'm kinda like it. So i don't know i don't know but relationship storylines that they're kind of getting into the one relationship to surprise storyline out. That doesn't seem believable to me. I just don't know what's gonna happen with it. And then and then the reason for his anxiety bumped me out resent those catches you off guard. Because you're just waiting to laugh through through things and that at some point hit you with that That whole anxiety thing and like you feel his tension. That's what it was. I just don't like him be in pain. Yeah but that. That's what he's one of the nicest people in the world. That's to say that people you'll ever meet at been through an amazing amount of pain that you'll never know about so that's the biggest life lesson in that show. It's so good out of this friend of mine. She's on tv all the time it. She interviewed the cast at the bar. Very cool that's awesome. I found my apple. Tv so maybe. I'll have to dive into those shows. It's really good. Yeah speaking tv. The vietnamese were last night. So we're gonna get a recap we're gonna get into the vm. As radiated a bunch of other stuff. A few surprise appearances. Britney spears stuff to really all that judging rich take is getting to be made skinny. Britney spears but he got well you know. I have to touch them for newspapers firs because semi actually posted a picture of brittany's engagement ring like friday or saturday and then deleted it and so i was like there's no way this can't be and they were getting like the video of breading actually holding up her finger and the ring finger and them like him asking if she likes it and they were getting all the details about the ring so they are totally engaged his four carrots he popped the question and the place where he got the ring. They're actually selling the brittany ring. Now you can get the brittany ring and then customize it the way you want the way. Sam customized it for britney is on the inside of the ring he actually had engraved the lioness which is his nickname for her to use her money to buy the ring. Because why did he proposed before jamie. That's why britney fans are a little concerned about from all of the comments like. I'm always there for the comment section when i read newsweek like i can't wait to read. All of the brittany fans have like unveiled or discovered. Or what they're looking into it and me myself like i hope to god that this is the guy for her that he is a really good person and he's brought her through one of the toughest times in her life and he's there for her and he's all that but i do worry a little bit about his intentions which i think a lot of fans do we're hoping Only time will tell. I think that there was something about the conservative ship where she couldn't get engaged in. She was like literally being controlled. So maybe now that a little bit of that control has been lifted because now the conservative is totally up in the air. Maybe that's why he felt like he could finally go there and proposed but we don't know we don't know we just have to hope and pray that this is brady's healthy addict so the ama's obviously happened in on the red carpet of course They had to ask the question to him. Boy bandres about brittany's engagements so. Aj mclean bathroom. Asked about it and they were like so happy for her. which wink. congratulations my dear. He deserves the best in the world. You've been through enough hell. This is your time enjoy. I'm super excited me. I've known her since she was twelve years old so i am so excited that she is now going to marry the love of her life. Seems like i've never met him but he seems like a sweet sweet guy and i could be more happy so i can't wait from invited years up on the dropping of ood manifesting it making it my bite. Okay i'm gonna put that out there. Yeah so the vm. As a lot of people didn't watch it you might have watched it. Like how i did on social media all of the that were shared and they just the internet breaks down the biggest moment so from what i gather from the vietnamese. They were really just trying to marry the old vets. The legends of the game with the young newbies. And they did that in the very opening. Madonna showed up and they said we wouldn't last here mother implant who knows what looked a little bit more cardi b. ation no. I wouldn't put a passer either way. She was there and you know what she does. She's still there. You know what i mean like. She said they didn't think he'd be here. But we're here doce cat. Not only performed hosted killed her outfits. Were outrageous but like i said they were marrying the legends with a somewhat new babies of the industry. And we'll get a little nauseous into second. Speaking of that but olivia rodriguez. She performed killed her performance and then took home song of the year for driver's license. This is so insane. Wanna all of you guys the fans. I want to dedicate this award to all of the other girls who write songs on their bedroom floor. People will try to dim your light but speaking your mind and sharing your heart the most beautiful things in the world. And here's saddam. Thank you again as just like a precious to me. I am a huge a rod fan. And i just think she's like the sweetest thing she could be my little sister. I'm like i love you so much. So cute good on her performance. I'm happy healed edge but so good. I was excited to see megan fox. And courtney kardashian introduce their and i quote future baby daddies g k and travis scott Obviously a lot of people are really excited to see. Justin bieber performed his first time in six years performing. But gotta get back to a rod as you so beautifully. Put it hayden. i'm jay. Lo actually introduced her and they took a selfie on stage together and people went absolutely bananas for jaylo on stage except one person for when the cameras cut to billy eyelash straight face not a clap. Not a good look. Not even a smile. And everyone's like Is it just here. Is billy island over j. Lo what she not paying attention or was she throwing shade. I'm not sure. But i'm hoping whoever interviews billy i next ather but billy actually scooped up the award for.

It's just that part. And it's all a part of the bad romance lady gaga song and it's basically like they're trying to be serious and saying oh they are really trying and i honestly think that'd be great for us to do and we should do it because i was like kyle sitting over here cracking up when i watched the video. Because they're so bad to the point is to really try to richie entitled do before. Who hair singing. If i could have a special talent it would be to be able to sing. And i can't do it so it would be like me starting singing then kyle china back my terrible singing and she would probably be dying laughing. It's not like this is like what i just played. They were taking doing it. They are taking turns. Yeah so it's like one person so it'd be like i would go first child go second john you're richer force back each other one out of time and you at the line and it just. "You know decorate my house and we're sitting there people pointing toward a table and we would and there's one of the characters actually one of the vampires that pride in the movie plot in Twilight was really big about i guess. Eleven twelve years ago so he sitting there with log people at a table and everyone's rookie kinda whispered talking and we just couldn't believe he was there and no-one approached him. No one bothered him. No one you know win to talk ten. But he was eating with his greg and when he stood up to three everyone klatt and i saw kinds of cameras coming out people taking pictures of him but they waited until he was finished and once he got up to leave. That's when they you know. They gave him a privacy while he was eating. And i thought that was so neat and classy of everyone. And so i wanted to share that with you Also one more thing episode of pride and Nannies day in gray said placing. The storm would turn the car around to go back all the way a store in any face that taught take your candid ass that toward the storm. I'll us so hard it my weight t out of my mouth. It made me literally crowd. That's an old phrase. I remember my daddy saying my aunts and uncles sand. there's no way that this show scripted. It was great out of love yaw just wanted to share those things with how great day. Well thank you so much. I love that story about the actor. The plane vampire diaries. And don't get me wrong. We absolutely love the interaction that we have with our with the fans with people that watch our show that feel invested in our family. We love that Just right when we have food in our mouth and we're sitting down eating you know we. We actually met the nicest couple that have since become our friends. That literally waited till we finished our dinner. We were down in florida and we were eating and he waited until we finish georgian. Stephanie then came over and introduced himself and after that we actually became become friends with them. I mean we've been to their home. We had dinner. We've been out on the boat. I mean and they are amazing people. And i thank god every day because them having the courage to do had they not come over we would have never met them and we would have truly lost out because they are amazing. Amazing people so. I don't want you to think that we don't want to talk to people that love our watch our show because you know yourself i have. I ever told anyone no no. It's just like when we're eating our food lettuce spinach our food And i think it's just a just a general consensus pro a privacy thing. It's it's the time that we really the only time that we get to each to be with each other without a camera rolling are without someone been invading that space for us to have that one on one time. Sure and i don't mind have never told anyone know about taking a picture. I've never not talked to. Someone answered the questions that they've asked me or whatever. But i mean it's a prime example last week we were sitting at this. We go to this restaurant here in nashville ever in town. Go to hattie b.'s. Best hot chicken in. And i'm not even a meat person but i there they got the best crinkle fries and ranch dressing. Which is what. You had to take the pitcher while. I was shoveling food in my mouth. So she's what. Can i come over and get a better pitcher and she comes over and sits down at the table with us and takes pitcher and you know those kind of things i feel like is a little bit intrusive and you know showing up at our home at eleven thirty at night. Knocking bringing our doorbell going under gates climbing over gates. You know waiting outside for one of us to pull out of our on our street. Those are things that that kinda make us feel a little uncomfortable. Especially with some of the things we've had to deal with with savannah and these her stalker situation. But you know. You are amazing. And i loved that episode. And gotta give it to sutton because sutton is from georgia. Yes and sutton has got ball in money and she does not care what you think. She lives her life and she's going to call it out and sutton listen. I wouldn't have handled it the same way because you know. I'm kinda riding die if i'm your friend today and we'll be a friend one hundred years from now unless you screw me over and what you've got going on in your life if it doesn't affect me in a negative way then there's no reason for me to pull away from you and i don't care what society thinks. I'm going to stand with what i know in my heart is the right thing to do and you know it is what it is but i mean sutton. I think she's been. She's doing great on that show and i love. What is the one that. I told you that i loved. She's the She's the asian woman that so pretty but she's i love her now. I know that certain didn't like her black pants. Leather paint her leather is. What am i jealous. Up your ugly pants. I'm like oh. Are we really do this point. But i was still stuck on. Who's hunky dory so. I mean that saved the night for me. So if you've watched kathy hilton. There's a reason that paris hilton is who she is. And it's because of kathy hilton. Kathy hilton to me is just the classiest. She lives in her own universe. You know she's looking for. She's waking up in wanting to know where her straw has for her smoothie. I mean we should all live this way. I think cao said it best. She spent her whole life living at the waldorf astoria right. Yep i won't kathy hilton's money. I want to live like kathy hilton lives. I won't to literally. I literally if i could come back. I'd come back as kathy hilton right. If i died and i could come back. I'm coming back kathy hilton. Because that's like that's like a no brainer for me because you have all the money you're beautiful. You can do whatever you want to do. And you got hot sister. Mrs for four years ago and says and i just really struggling with my faith and just completely believe in the way that i was before this law. I just feel like it's been really hard to be able to give my faith back to the lord and just try send completely and it's something that i just really want so if you guys have any for me thanks i do have some advice for you. i think you have to realize that Just because you believe in. God are just because you're a christian doesn't mean that you're not going to go through bad things doesn't mean that bad things aren't gonna happen to you. Does it mean that you're not going to be sad. I think it just means that God's never going to forsake you and he's never going to allow more to happen to you than what you can can deal with and that he's always going to be there and you know we don't always know why things happen or You know while we have to lose people but I do think that you know you will continue to struggle and till you turn yourself back over to him and realize that okay. There's a reason there's a reason for this whether it's for me to to be able to relate to someone else to help someone else get through their pain and listen. It never goes away and it's so funny that we're actually having this that this caller because My brother's birthday is this week. August thirtieth and so I think that You never get over it. "Hi my name is melissa. And i'm calling from new canaan in connecticut and my question is what advice Do you give to young entrepreneurs who are finding their way in the business world Water good jobs to take To gain experience or internships to apply to gain experience Thank you melissa. This is a question. I hear every single day in. It's a great question so it's good you're asking a lot of people can learn from it you just starting out. There's a whole world out there. Where do you go. What do you focus on what he'd take. What are you one. It's like so hard when you haven't started down a path okay. So my advice would be three solid things. Okay number one. You want to stay open minded. Okay just see what comes your way you gotta go out and play in the traffic to see what bumper cars of the air. And what do you like to do which you want to jump in and steer you gotta get out there and tries to alaska them. So don't go out there with an attitude that you have to find the right first step. There is no right. I stepped is no formula. Just get out and get in the fray. That's number one number two. You'll have opportunities along the way in the beginning and all along the next job and the job. I after that you'll have opportunities to choose more money or better position or more experience but you know they never come in the same job. A better experience comes with some jobs and better pay comes another other jobs always choose experience because when you choose the better experience it always gets you further ahead when you you back up from your life and look back and see wall. Thank god i worked for that guy. Thank god i worked in that place that opened the store to this one that open door to this one but if you had just bought the job that was offered you because paid more. Those jobs never really go anywhere for some reason. That's what i've learned. And i've had a lot of jobs. Hey and the last is don't overlook the person you're working with working for you boss if you choose a boss that you like and has your back. He likes you back. she likes you back. She protects you. You're gonna wind up in a better job. You're going to get promoted more. You have pushed ahead because you've joined a great team headed by great leader and so don't overlook who you work for has more to do as you happiness you'll find than what you actually do for a living so loosen it up. Melissa you sound a little tight loosen it up. Let's not get out there and playing the traffic. Don't be so particularly. And that's all we have time for today if you have a question. "And i'm trying to match it with a great enthusiastic answer but the truth is that i got an invitation. Gordon shark tank. I just got lucky call. Not that i was already working very hard in the field to build a reputation for myself as someone in the media space. But i got lucky. Call someone who called me and invited me. Would i be interested in going on the show. that's how i got on shark tank. I might also add that. I got rejected on shark tank right after i signed the contract. We'll say cold and so they changed their mind and the best thing. I did not lucky. But the best thing i did was stand for myself and give them a lot of reasons why they had made a mistake and asking them to invite me and the other woman they already chose or so they said out to compete for the one seat so that was the best decision i made and really got me on shark tank but i do get that lucky coal. Initially that being said. Why do i do it. I wish i could tell you. It's because i love helping people and that was on my mind. In the gecko. I discover that later why i did shark tank. Initially as it was fun. I felt like i could speak my mind. Be myself and people responded well to and they got something out of it only then did i realize the power of plane. The fairy godmother and making dreams come true and how much satisfaction i would get of having many different partners all the time changing all the time becoming part of my family and how satisfied that was. I wanna say one of the thing and that is i love me on shark tank every single day. All right i. There isn't a day on that. Set that i don't say thank you god for giving me this shot and because of that i've got so much satisfaction. Well well well. Beyond what a job could give give. You feels to me just like a gift gift every day but you keep that old enthusiasm olivia from the city of long island. I never heard that line could feel and you sound like you're still from long island by the way. Don't lose that accent. Hello this is barbara. Hi barbara since they keep from olive branch mississippi. I have been a work from home. Mom for twenty five years. I built a very successful direct sales business. That unfortunately closed after thirty five years in business i was with that company for twenty years earned a healthy six figure income. And now it's gone. I never thought that. I would invest so much of myself and my time into that business but fell in love with the people i worked with and that exposed me to. I'm now floundering. And the fact that i've not yet found anyone who acknowledges the skills and stamina and professionalism that building and sustaining in that industry required is somewhat disappointing I have great people skills a higher than normal q. and work ethic. And i'm just wondering if you have any advice or direction for what line of business i'm not consider pursue mix while it's kind of a complicated question because there's a lot of layers would vicky so let me take a stab at giving my my best dancer. Okay first of all get about the regret. I hear between the lines. What always time. You can't spend any time regretting it because what it really is. It's another version of feeling. Sorry for yourself. You don't have time for that. You don't need it you to talented. Don't waste another minute even thinking that you regret any of the energy you put anywhere because guess what you got forward. You became successful. And that's all you can hope to get is success from really putting the pedal of the metal and try and everything you can all right so don't regret it. Leave that behind. That's number one next thing. You have to leave behind looking for the acknowledgement from others. You know people. Don't you know it's like being in a long marriage in hoping a husband brings you roses. Every day doesn't work. that way. Lucky remembers the anniversary. Frankly so don't look for acknowledgement of how talented you were or what you accomplished from people that you want to employ now or from the people that you work with back. Then it's over. You did well any job. You're paid well again. Another version of feeling. Sorry for yourself just looking for acknowledgement again. But here's what i hear in The positive vein of everything. You said i agree with you. I don't doubt you for a minute that you were more talented than most people there. And that's phenomenal package. You could apply those particular talents because said not industry related their people and job related. That could apply to any. You could apply to any job you choose. So what are you interested in. Make a list of what floats he boat. What makes you happy. What kind of industry catches your eye here. There and then to start applying for a lot of jobs. They're all those old talents you have. Don't go away you'll bring them to the next job and push them at the job with reckless abandonment. Don't hold back and you'll have another big success. Remember how happy you were in that old job before it ended so you just looking for replacement and i would also say if you have people you love people who loved you and you had great exposure many people which you mentioned in your question i say why not grab a few those people maybe even one as a partner and go into the same field. Do it for yourself. Why not start the business for yourself if you enjoy being a member of a team you know what you're doing and you produced money for the next guy so why not go out and do it for yourself. I just say maybe consider that but those are to clear roads to your future success. Oh forget the past. Close the door on that move on. Let's take a short break to talk about a company. I love no doubt. It's been a tough year for small business. But those who are quick to go. Virtual and adopt new technology are coming out on top. Clark Howard Show
What's happening with the oil markets?
"I WanNa talk about something that has confused people no end and that is what's going on with the oil markets which is causing the stock markets around. The world. Have a really really rough time. So here's the scoop and we alluded to this on the show. Last week is that it was possible. That oil would go negative that people would actually have to pay to have somebody take their oil. And that's an oversimplification. But the way commodities markets work is people buy and sell contracts on futures exchanges where they're guessing what the value is. Something is going to be the next month months down the road. And what's happening with oil right now? Is there such an enormous oversupply that nobody wants it? People who own the contracts or essentially having to pay people to take them over and so we have had a double whammy first. We had the thing that Putin so successfully engineered that massively over produced oil from Russia and then intern from Saudi Arabia as demand for the products that come out oil gasoline and the others fell off a cliff because of all the sheltering in place around the world what. Putin has been trying to engineer is to destroy the US energy market the US energy market had become the world's largest and the situation for us different than Putin and Russia and the Saudis. And some others is that costs us more to produce each barrel of oil using principally hydraulic fracking than it cost to get it easily. Accessible reserves that the Russians and the Saudis and some others can get too so hydraulic fracking costs. More to do then. Most any other method of producing oil out of the ground or pumping it out of the ground and so it normal prices for oil. Our producers are marginally profitable to not really highly profitable but enough they can make a living what Putin saw was an opportunity to destroy the some of the economic strength of the United States and to create more market share for Russia's oil. And so he's been able to do both by pumping way in excess. The amount of oil needed in the world make no mistake dictator. Putin is dedicated to harming the United States. That's what he's always been about. That's who he was when he was with the KGB when it was still the Soviet Union. And that's what he's still about so where we sit today is the effects of what. Putin unleashed has essentially worked and now the world is so awash in oil that the problem is nobody knows if we're going to have any place to store the excess as a result you're going to see one oil exploration company after another and one oil producer after another in the United States. Go Bust and that's what he wanted to do and that's happening now. Historically when that's happened the oil industry in the United States has always been a boom and bust industry. Putin's victory will be short-lived because even as companies get cleared out as competitors when oil's price recovers as people around the world more or less eventually. Go back to work. The oil price will get to a point where players will get out there and start exploring and producing oil out of the ground again in the United States. So right now. This is really hideous with taxes as I read one story in forget if it was the Houston Chronicle or the Dallas Morning News both follow the oil industry so much particularly the chronicle. Does that Texans think of themselves as energy producers not necessarily one particular type of energy and already in the Permian basin the core of where hydraulic fracking has been so successful. Companies are pivoting to producing energy from solar because the Permian Basin is one of the best places in the United States to efficiently produce sewer and it's extremely profitable to do so there so no that one of the things about American capitalism is when one door closes. American entrepreneurs are willing to take a risk on another. And I think you're going to see that the big pivot in Texas in West Texas is going to be the sole were for now. But let's talk about what this means to you and me and our wallets so the last trade for an a gallon of regular gasoline at wholesale spiff four cents the effective. That is that around the country. What we pay for gasoline once people start going back to work and get on the roads and more normal numbers. The savings to your wallet operates like a big tax cut so this is a complicated thing in that a sector of the. Us economy energy production is taking a body blow. You and I as consumers have been just eaten alive by Corona virus but there is a dividend for us as consumers is. We'll go to fill our vehicles. Is We go through months of trying to recover from Corona virus? We will pay much less for the fuel we put in our tanks. There's lots and lots of things that the United States can do to strike back at the Russians not militarily but economically and one. That may be confusing. But you'll likely hear more over the next. Few weeks is having a very high tax on oil imports since we have such a massive supply in the problem is a price side problem with no demand out there that if we create a price disadvantage for the Russians with the oil that would maybe flow into the United States. It provides a bit of protection our producers. The problem is that creates a conflict between what works best for you and me as consumers which is having a lower price per gallon of gas and then the other side what works best for the producers which is to have some protection from the hideous actions of dictator Putin.

We always liked to do on the show. Let's go back back to the beginning. We were having great conversations right before. Went on about About some of the movies so I say back to the beginning. Well I the earth cool cool dinosaurs game not quite that far back Mike Myers. I'm sorry thank you fellow Canadian eighty at my life. Let's go back to a little bit closer to your beginning. How did you first get into flying? Were you a kid interested in aviation was something year round at all. I always liked airplanes when I was younger and You know even going back when I was a kid. We used to go down to Florida every year and we had a condo down there and I remember one year getting into radio controlled airplanes and magazine Z.. My mom bought forming. We weren't we could see in the store and then it was in a holding pattern until we actually started the drive entertainment for the kids as we go down a little older I get it you know. I can't see the magazine and it'll wait. And then we started driving down and funny enough. I still have this. Old Radio Controlled Model Airplane magazine and on the cover. It is a seal to fifteen. Oh there was an article the guy that made one going in and out of the water One but then the actual picture of it was there and it sort of you know foreshadowed several decades later actually got into that it you know in my career but yeah I always liked airplanes and cars and anything with an engine and You Know I. I went to university after high school. I finished my degree and Happy to say it would be in geography a fee. But it wasn't really leading me into anything so our jingle researching Yo hey I can still become pilots too late as a mid twenties and You know give. The military shot didn't work out because a little tall but Yeah just started. Chipping away at the flight school with North of Toronto. So you mentioned you mentioning just too tall. Aw to fly in the military. So you're seven yet is that right and That still seems sort of I guess I get it but it so seems strange to me like this in the you know whether that was the late twentieth or early twenty first century. That something like that that you know. You're you're smart. You're obviously good pilot. Well it all all these other qualifications. But I'm sorry just physically don't fit in the cockpit. How did it seems amazing to me that we can't well to me? Is that it it because of the L. Red tape in the way that the hiring process goes took several months for that to be established whereas on the very first day I was asking too tall and they'd be like I'm not sure. How is your eyesight and Mike Take my told to do this job? And at every step in the process I kept asking and basically I don't know you know down the line and by the time I got after all the simulator checks in the background checks and the two hour interview where they ask you about some pretty intense stuff being you know you're signing up for the military past all that everything was okay and then I I went from full medical and all your tallet everything else on. Yeah and like we're talking top to bottom everything like x rays. I checked you name it and at the end of it a set down the flight surgeon and he's okay. Well you're too tall. What else is wrong with you? Nothing nothing else is wrong with you. Did you get here. And I'm like nobody nobody would give me a no and so oh I just. He's like okay. Well tell you come back next week and we'll measure you again. What's going to happen that week? I thought they were just GonNa put me in an F.. Eighteen and object back to me over northern Alberta compress lose an inch and the way to go. I didn't happened. showed up the next week. And they it was interesting because they had to hide expert. And and they plotted me out and make really measured everything. And they had a chart green yellow red but the different machines in the Canadian military and read it was no go on that was for helicopters and the F. Eighteen of just wasn't gonNA happen yellow sort of like Oh might work in you know some of the other training planes and some smaller machines but then green. It was wide open for two hooks and the C. Seventeen and and We call them the Aurora. CB One forty rowers but P. threes. And I was like cool. I'll fly that stuff. That sounds great and they said well No. Thank you but if you're not able to do everything everything does work for us so actually coming out. Wow what's it's amazing to me because if you talk to people over the years who have been undetermined to you know to get in the military military do flying and things like that you hear stories of people as you know they were told no upfront and well then they then they fought it or going going back far enough. It's like well you can't do it because of your is well you know. The doctor leaves the room. They memorize the eye chart and get into but those people usually sort of told no at every step but I hate to to indulge the stereotype but maybe maybe this was uniquely Canadian. Because you're not find anybody to actually say they just said you're still quite handsome. I'm afraid it's the it's the height it's really you know it's the rest of us are too short. Sorry it's not you it's us we're GONNA have to the whole program to fit people like you. Subways cars cars are going to make it work. You can pick a little while. Oh that's fascinating to me though you know it it it it it is what it is you. There's nothing I can do about that and it's been some effort to deal with my tire. Career couldn't find fleiss certain airplanes at Buffalo was to offer. DC3's couldn't fly one fifty. Two's for the training. I think I did but hey I'm here now. Gainfully employed as a pilot and I mean it is interesting applying a Dornier two to eight in the winter right now my knees are pretty much chance. Yeah crossings from the Left are interesting to make it work. Well that's something else that I find it especially interesting though. Is that You know if you look at you look on the career that you've you've had so far and you're still young Guy But you flown some amazing things have had these incredible experiences. And who knows how that would've How the career would have played out? Had you gone into into the Canadian Forces and and gone a completely different direction. I'm sorry I would've still been rewarding but but Maybe you would have had a very different in. Dare I say less fulfilling career to this. It's it's tough to say you know it really in a life gives us these past and you go down one and another one disappears and you can think of what all the hypothetical ways go. I mean maybe you know it could have been flying seventeen all over the world you know on CNN. In that regard. I mean the chopper thing was out in. The fighter jets roared. But you know you you never know and you know I'm happy with the path that's ended up and You know wants the one door closed. It's like okay. Well you know time for next one keep moving so but yeah it would have been would have been interesting I think but hey I'm happy how it worked out and you know lots of adventures up north and say the least a few minutes ago. You mentioned your flight training that you're too tall for the for the system of fifty two Key Tell us about your fight training. What did you train in and out of that I'll go sure absolutely I went to flight school. North of Toronto. Oh called Toronto Airways Airport based Button Ville airport which was funded out about a couple of times. Yeah Okay we'll enjoy it because they keep saying it's GonNa Clo that's GonNa close and it's been bought by developers and it's still open. It's just keep delaying. It will eventually close. I'm sure which is yeah. Disappointing community not happy about that in Canada but So I went up there. I started chipping away at it and funding my first and strike flight instructors later heather. And she's about five foot wonder five two so she's putting a phonebook behind her back in the seventy two and crank in the seat forward and up. Meanwhile I'm going down back and trying to kick a hole in the side for some with the Sunroof uh-huh for the but so is Yeah lots of one. Seventy two was the primary playing a trained on and then a twin engined stuff was on a piper seminal and I valley parked in Toronto. Pay For it all the whole time and So that was there are some other vehicles getting in and out of small spaces so adapted with that and Took took took a couple of years. I was more Working to pay for it all and then when I was done the training of wasn't any debt which is rare. You know these days of flight training because it is very expensive Had A lot of fun with that and You know just flew over mostly Ontario a little bit into Quebec and yeah some great great instructors at a wonderful time checked off all the boxes and then it was resume ta I am.

Who's in Your Room? The Secret to Creating Your Best Life
"A pleasure to welcome back. Dr I've in my mirror. He is just been such an inspiration for so many New York Times bestselling author Wall Street Journal bestselling books his latest book. I just think the title is brilliant who's in your room who's in your room. The secret to creating your best life, and it's such a pleasure Ivan, welcome back, you've got your PHD in organizational behavior. You've you've been interviewed all over the place and television, and in magazines and the question becomes. How do you say, no? Without feeling like a jerk. And we are pushed pushed him pulled at this time in our lives. First of all, it's great to be back on your show. Thanks for inviting me back. I appreciate it. So there's a lot of ways that you can say, no. And I think people they really have a challenge with that in their life. I like saying, yes, if I can say yes to people, but what I've learned as I've gotten a little more, gray hair. Okay. A lot of grey hair. You gotta be you. You have to set boundaries. Steve job was once said, he was proud of the things they said, no to in products than the things that he said, yes to and I think I think there's some truth to that. So let me give you a couple of techniques. Yes. I'll say, no. And not be a jerk. This is my favorite. I'm gonna start my favorite if I said, yes. To that. I'm afraid I'd let you down. Oh, he's not answer that. Oh, what do you mean? Then give the reason you don't you don't have the bandwidth. You don't have the time. It's not it's not something that, you know, you get excited about whatever it is. But if I don't wanna let you down, and so forth suggested that I'm afraid I'd let you down. Great technique. It's a mindset reset makes people stop. And then I would follow it up with a second techniques that I talk about in your. Will refer them to someone more qualified. It might be somebody. Who knows what it is that they're looking for is better at it has more time is excited by that. Whatever it is they want to do. And so you're not just saying no, you're giving them a solution. As a matter of fact, I'll even say would you like to introduce you to that person? If they don't know the individual and those two techniques work a lot and they work their effectively. So I love this that you say think of think of your room. You're like his room. Explain to us the concept of this new book because it really is great. Thank you so much. I appreciate it. So imagine you live your entire life in one room, and that one room has only one door and that one door is an enter only door. So when people come into your life or into your room there there forever. You can never kill them. No. Luckily, this is a metaphor. But if it were true, would you be more selected Frankie about the people that you're leading through. You think? Everybody says, and they say it very much like that. Yeah. Oh my goodness. So here's the deal. We believe Mike authors. And I believe it's more than a metaphor. And here's why crikey. I want you to think about if you're listening to this show. What you think about somebody that used to be in your life that created chaos in your life? They were talks or whatever. You got you don't have to name them online either. No, no, no. I have I have. So here's the deal if they're stealing your head. They're still in your life. Because the decisions you make for the rest of your life based on experiences that you've had in your past. So they may be out of your head. But they're still in your room. You can never get them out. You can put them to the back. You can stick them in a box and put them on a shelf real high above but they're stealing your head. They're never out completely. We interview Dan, Dr Daniel Ammen, the neuroscientists, of course. Yeah. And and he said, look what your experiences with other people their fingerprints are all over your brand. You'll remember that stuff for the rest of your life, and you'll be dealing with it for the rest of your life sitting out. Well, there's the people that are there are there. There are ways that you can deal with them. And so that's what the book is about is how how personal how do you screen? How do you make better choices in future? And then how do you deal with the people that you may be made a bad choice or you had no choice like family members? How do you deal with them? So

So I love the idea of opening up a car with my watch all the people who are listening who always lose their keys. What a cool idea is that it's coming in the future. I'm Jefferson Graham with USA today. Listen talking tech. I'm here at the Elliott shout. Chris Woodward from USA day. As with me, we have both taken a look at this new futuristic infotainment says Senator from d'arme, you probably won't see it for a year or two, but one of the cool things it will do is open the car with your watch. Chris. What do you think I think that's a great great trick to have up your sleep? Now, remember on Garmon, this is a company we all know for making navigation devices. It's also a great example of a company that needs to get out ahead of technology to leapfrog where everyone else is because everyone else's caught up to where they were. So what they're trying to do is integrate a whole number of technologies into their car and being able to get into it with your smartwatch is just one of them. Yeah. The watch is one thing they're going to announce in January in alliance with the German manufacturer who could that be BMW VW know who who knows and you'll be able to send information from the watch to the car by the end of the year, you'll be all the open the door with your watch. But this new entertainment system is really competitor, apple and Android with what they've got. But the cool thing about it is that you could use the apple carplay if you chose you could use Android auto if you chose and they also have other fun things. Like, better, weather, better navigation, those and of course, restaurant information and things like that. So that makes you wonder is better better better going to be enough. There's no leapfrogging technology in his goal even the smartwatch to open. It right now. There are other subs out there for key-fobs. So makes you wonder if they can do better better better on about eight different areas. If that's going to be enough to make them stand out in. A very crowded field for this kind of technology going into cars typically when what we're seeing today in Vancouver Twenty-eight teen looks pretty cool, but this won't show up in a car till twenty twenty one or twenty two two if we're lucky yes. But this stuff is coming on pretty fast again, their computer their competitors are on their heels. And they have to try to get a little bit ahead of them. When it comes to that kind of stuff. It's happening very fast. The thing that intrigued me when we got a look at talk to these guys was trying to do some sort of virtual reality things in the car. They're trying to do like when you see navigation. They're trying to put new overlays on that more than what we're seeing. Now, we're tell you the name of the street like, for instance, you're driving on Broadway, and it will show you pictures of the restaurants pictures of the restaurants, or, you know, all kinds of different views or the ability to call ratings for that restaurant. I mean that is where the action is it's an infotainment. Actually on the other stuff doesn't really matter as much it looks like an ipad in your navigation. It looks like an ipad new dashboard similar to a tesla. A big beautiful screen, and we'll see how successful garment is a getting it into these cars. No word on the cost. But it will be an option. It will be an add on from the manufacturers. Yes, they could market directly to the customer, but more than largely I think it's as you mentioned what they're going to have a German partner. It could be an automaker. It could be a supplier like Bausch, and then they'll just sell it directly to the automakers. But here at the Los Angeles auto show, we're seeing a ton of really innovative info infotainment systems, including some that stretch all the way across the dashboard. Okay over here. We have a new vehicle that was introduced today that it's a new SUV. It comes from a company called Biton B Y T O N. They're gonna make them in China. They say they're going to be due out in the next year. And in this concept version of disaster V is. Infotainment screen that stretches from one door to the other at about ten inches high. So this Mosser sleep huge infotainment screen in which you could continuously broadcast information to the driver. And the passengers the big question how distracting will that be for the driver as I look into is peer into that vehicle. It's seems to me like it would be really distracting. Now, it is a concept. They could definitely tone it down for production. But talking to one of their guys they say, no, this what what I see is pretty much. What customers will be getting? I thought the garment display was distracting. But you know, what can I say? I certainly the kids in the car will love it. And we'll see what happens from the L A auto show. Correspondents Report
Boxes, bureaucracy and Beirut Barbie: waiting for the comforts of home
"Four former Indonesia correspondent Etem hobby headed to the Middle East to take up his new posting their he's spent several years living in Jakarta himself for months ago here. He's family said goodbye to their belongings packing them off in a shipping container to await the day. They could all be reunited in their new Hon. Well, they've had a long white his his report from Beirut. I'm standing waist deep in an apartment full of cardboard boxes and packing piper. In the only clearing in the room. Six very serious libanaise this symbol of plastic. Children's playhouse armed with a cordless drill and a picture of the finished version of downloaded from the internet. This is a great day better than Christmas shipment of personal belongings. Arrived a close my daughter's high chair my son's Playmobil firetruck. Most importantly of all my record player. Now. No, the declawed life is not for me of lifted since June. There's people who check away everything leave with two t-shirts, plastic special and an element fry pen loses. It's like camping great for three days. But you don't want to do it for five months and minimalism certainly isn't for my four year old son his school friends, come over and say where he toys we'd head to buy roots waterfront and spotted container ship out to sea, and he'd say to me one fli daddy is that our shipment. Nice on. It's not we'd packed up. Our lives in Indonesia in June. Everything we own sealed into cardboard boxes and jammed into a shipping container and sent to the docks in Jakarta a couple of days later, we headed to the airport ready for reassignment to the Middle East stuff. Meanwhile, stayed rod where it was. I'm sorry, sir. Said the Indonesian shipping agent, but you'll customs clearance cannot be approved until we were. Leave you'll Livni's working visa and residency permit. It wasn't living on not letting it in. It was Indonesia not letting it leave. But that's not the way the Middle East works. I tried to explain you arrive on a tourist visa and transferred to a working visa and then apply for residency and that process takes months. We'll noted sir said the shipping agent slightly patronizing Email response that I've come to Lowe's Angolan is Indonesia, I sort the country where you can pay for police. Escort through heavy traffic is something we could do to expedite the process. I asked silence. Especial fee, perhaps more solids put it on the line. A sure they don't looking for a bribe asked, no, sir. He said sounding shocked. It is the requirement of Indonesian customs. So the past few months in Beirut have been rice to get the crucial documents on need to allow us stuff to leave Jakarta a couple of days each week. Sometimes more have been spent chasing schools of crucial stamps on pieces of paper, lodging leaders and passport photos and CV's and California graphs making hefty deposits into government institutions whose only purpose seems to be to take money from me blood tests x rays and entire days wondering the holes of some way, cold the office of general security, looking in vain for any official willing to process my forms. A knocked on one door and pushed it over to find a room full of armed middle aged men in camouflage uniforms, only king ice cream. Means a back slowly out and pretended. I'd see nothing. I'd return home from some of these trips. Broken men. Still clutching the unstamped form that had needed to be approved and lodged somewhere else. So that I could begin another phase of the process that would eventually lead to the departure of our belongings from Indonesia sometimes of wondered if the kids would ever see that toys again, the local Gisele expensive, and it'd be strange like a two foot high roller skating Beirut, Bobby with a piecing jingle. About two months into the process and long after by route Bobby should have been disappeared is the finish line vanished. Over the horizon shipping agent emailed with some old bad news. The interim export permit from Indonesia was about to expire stuff might not be allowed to leave at all. I think I cried a little then without warning. Finally, some good news. Someone had gone to visit Indonesian customs. It turned out. They were prepared to approve the export permit without any of the supposedly essential documents from Lebanon in return for a small fee. I was too. I've enjoyed to say I told you so, but why couldn't we have done these four months ago? The books is a he Abed's have sheets. My daughter has caught the plastic house has been assembled in the Playmobil fire crew is on Judy. Life with stuff is good. This is Adam havi in Beirut for correspondence report.
