"The bakery breakfast sandwich. So what's going on? We're gonna take a trip to town because everyone's going to have to get reacquainted with how to get to midtown. Since the new exit the exits from the old viaduct or now closing right or closed both western avenue and Seneca street, not Seneca, what was the one Columbia used to get ongoing south get off at Seneca, get on at western author western batteries. Here's all gone. So now you've got to reacquaint yourselves aware. Radio. Are you going to have your first let's start with appetizer? When you get back into downtown Seattle. Well, I never leave downtown Seattle because I love it so much. I always try to find a way. But as we've talked about before I love the pike place market this time of the year. This is when I feel most like a local when I'm shopping at the pike place market because it's a little bit quieter. And even today as we're taping. It's a beautiful Chris sunny day. It's like it's ideallic ending in a lot of ways. So I would start out by going to EDA's and having having a little seafood a little seafood appetizer. You know, I love that tuna tuna salad. Yeah. Hi, it's Jamie, which is delicious, and you serve it with those kind of like white guy pancakes for love, white guy, green onion pancake. Well, she's she's Japanese. So she can say that. Yeah. That's true. That's true. Well, I should say they're a little bit more Mexican because you make them with like flour tortillas. I think that they are so delicious and crispy and flaky and that with a little fresh tuna sashimi with the Masaba to Biko on top and the radish sprouts. That sounds super super good. I would gobble that up right now. Wow. Jerry. Okay. You you're coming back downtown. I know you've been living. Do we're just making it up for our time. You gonna reacquaint yourself with after a month off of downtown eating. So I think I think taking the market do we have to stay there the whole time. Oh, go wherever you want. You're not on. You're not on a crawl with me. I was going to go and get some some nice little lunch at. Matz in the market because I think it's quite essential Seattle as well. As requests to pike place market. Let's a soul them second floor the market and have a nice little big dish of muscle Penco muscle. Steam. I think I would have a wonderful lunch with some bread. Very simple glass of sauvignon blow. So was really good right now is that sandwich. Tom. All right, Tom, where would you go? Where would you have your first I would make a steak ation? I go to the market along with you. I guess we all just I'm just saying, it's the heart and soul of the city. So if you have to reacquaint yourself, it seems like a good spot to do it. I'd rent the beecher's loft. Which is above beecher's cheese. We've all seen the making the cheese behind the. So above that. There's a loft is called the beach loft. That's run by the end of the market, and it is spectacular urban environment right in the pike place market. And then I would just start come on like a Friday night. Hang out do a little dinner at the pink door or something of that nature. Then I would get up in the morning and have a make a list out my favorite thing to do. When I stayed at the end in the market. I did the exact same thing. Made a big list hit all the fun places where do you like to go? Well, I would start right off at dawn and Joe's, and I think I would pick something that I couldn't get any place else. And they always have lamb tongues. And which is a a meat item that you can can't really by any place else sweetbreads to sweetbreads lamb tons. So the lamp tongues are so tender when they're slowly braised, and then goes to socio produce and get some of the they always have a great mushroom selection. I would stop in dealer. MTV's pick out my olive oils. My vinegars cheeses, I go to pack and western wine shop and get my winds for the night start with some bubbles. Maybe a little white burgundy and stuff finished with a Meritas of something. I can't believe he didn't start this whole shopping excursion off with starting at Lithuania. And yeah, I love the free on the little sponge cookie with a little coffee from leppin. Yay. I would go into the market area and find something that would be a keepsake to put into my dinner. So maybe by a couple of different guys who make great cheese boards, cutting boards that make your good cheese board. So I would go to beaches and get some cheeses and by keep saying cutting bowls and nice Thomas right there. I'd served. You love ladder to serve my dinner on on my Lampton with wild mushrooms. Big keepsake platinum Keppel bouquet of those big flowers. They have on the pass a little tough right now. I'm not a big fan of the dried bouquets. Oh, yeah. So I better some forced tulips out there. I was gonna say I bet because of the the unseasonably warm weather, we've been having there might be some tulips out there tulips, you gotta know rhubarb is going to start showing up right now from the Kent houses. So maybe a little rhubarb tart for news. Irt sounds fantastic. So yeah, there's just there is so much to do. There is so much to do. I get caught up. Visit to the same museum. It's only a couple blocks away. You could do there's so much. You could do in downtown is very vibrant on a day. Like today. I walk through the Olympic sculpture park or down on the waterfront. Yeah. I think it's important that even if you have lived in Washington state for a very long time that occasionally you treat yourself like a tourist, and you go do the things that perhaps he would only do if someone was coming into town and treat yourself and have a really nice little lovely getaway weekend within your own state. Sounds fantastic. A couple of things I wanted to talk about. Brandy Carlisle event, we're going to have a little tribute dinner for her on February tenth at the palace ballroom. Harry knife. It's gonna be Superfund tickets are free, but you have to have a ticket. So you have to go to Tom dot com and sign up for the day of the Grammy's, it's the night of the Grammys February tenth we're going to do a little red carpet. But we can't charge to see the Grammys because that's illegal goes, we are charging for food and beverage, and you're doing some great donation work care. You're going to raise money for a brand new foundation called the looking out foundation. She and her wife, Catherine are big founders and supporters of that foundation school looking forward to that. And then also getting you ready for the winter flowers show, the flower and garden show at the convention center. We're going to have a big booth there. And we have a secret handshake and words. We're going to have a special little treat for you. If you come up to our booth and go h s s Seattle kitchen and give us a couple of peace signs. Just like the Richard Nixon, Roger stone signs. Spread your arms that we're supporting that. I'm Jay piece by piece. So if you come to our booth at the flower and garden show and give me those two things I will have a treat for you. Ooh. Going to tell you what that is. Okay. Gonna have to come earn. It. Thanks for coming on our trip in the town after karma gettin now, we're going to celebrate with.

"So technology does not have to be over i mean it really can be continuum in terms of how a patron experiences it yeah i think there's different levels i prefer to kind of like melt into the background or disappear into the background but it can't assistant in ways in enlighten and create a moment i think at the exhibition for a visitor sam has a number of locations so there's the seattle art museum this sort of the headquarters if you will downtown then there is the asian art museum which is in volunteer park which was the original location of the seattle art museum owner opened and it's undergoing serious renovation right now and expansion it is a gut renovation so they're really kind of taking everything out in just completely redoing it and it's going to be a beautiful space i think when opens up next year any discussions about the role of technology in what patrons see yes so we're we're actively looking at different solutions they're everything from an interactive map when you first walk into you know some more augmented reality mixed reality like i was talking about before we have a huge ceramics room that we want to kind of surface information that may not be evident when you're looking at a you know ancient pot from japan and may have writing on it that you may not understand and then looking at a app and see oh it actually means this perhaps or it is from this area and you can find out more so a lot of the things that we talked about that you've actually liked or thought about doing elsewhere might be applied and may obviously predate your arrival here but they may be applied in the asian art museum now yeah yeah i think so yeah it looks like we're rolling that out and planning right now what about the the other outdoor location of sam the olympic sculpture park which is can't recall how many years old probably ten fifteen years old somewhere in that range ten years old every year in winter there's this thing called sam lights and this last winter it's a one night celebration which seems a shame because it's really cool but it there were.

"Where art was acquired perhaps where it was painted see maybe we're acquiring art from certain location more than is in line with our mission statement perhaps or maybe we're acquiring art by gender more than we would like one way or maybe we're right in line where we're at and that kind of reaffirms or kohls you know it's funny you wish we should also talk about mobile fact that a lot of people essentially are married to their phones more so than anything else in their lives ucla people walking through the art museum taking pictures or taking pictures of other people and and calling themselves which is wrong get selfie as yourself but do you do you think that you can extend the mobile experience within the museum itself in new ways you talked about a our earlier yeah yeah no i definitely think that i think the lay our app that we're using right now extends that mobile experience and that's part of the reason why we are very concerned about making sure we have a strong you know wi fi infrastructure in the museum but yeah i think you know seeing people use their phone but we also want to make sure people are looking in and kind of look looking at the art itself and we definitely wanna make sure people are not you know holding their phone out and accidentally hitting the art by any means that never happens right it's never been anywhere yeah no nobody's ever going to admit it even if it has i'm talking with menashe engineer chief technology officer of seattle art museum when we come back we'll find out about how might technology applied to the being renovated asian art museum more outdoors at the olympic sculpture park you're listening to geekwire we'll be right back after a break.

"Been your biggest technology challenge since you came on board i think one of the challenges budget we're a nonprofit so it stuff getting a lot done here and with little budget and also i think just hiring people it's it's very difficult you know you're competing against facebook and google amazon and we're trying to hire programmers helped us technicians and we're competing against these people that have big deep pockets so just kind of financials is a little bit of a tricky thing because it does create a technology challenge if you can't get the right people in there yeah what's your what was the biggest sort of unexpected discovery humaid after joining sam nothing too much yet yeah i don't think there's anything that's like really scared me too much yet but we're going to be a positive discovery to it doesn't have to be just negative well i guess positive i would say that the team there's just been like a outstanding so i i've been pretty impressed by ruins been working from you you know people think about technology and art museums in different ways perhaps it's generational perhaps it's based on how frequently they visit a museum but what do you find is the largest misconception people have about the role of tech in art museums yeah well i i would say that i think for technology people often think about it in a museum just very much in terms like maybe like ar vr and maybe that's just kind of the latest trend right now of of how they view technology but like i was saying earlier there's a lot of back of house operations to kind of keep everything running you know at the seattle asian art museum also overseas the asian art museum and the olympic sculpture park and having those three locations you know we also support a.

"The opportunity to kind of see what would i could do i had the great fortune of early on getting selected to be the art architect on the olympic sculpture park and also get a great commission with paul allen's of flying heritage collection which is a aviation museum in in everett um and both of those were ones where we had the opportunity to explore um you know how to create transformative spaces for arts sir cultural groups that were kind of transforming um one space to create something that was new and vibrant in the case of the language collection we transform this old industrial hangar into a public assembly space and um i think that's been something that we've as we've developed the firm we've we've kind of focused on this idea of creating new oh exciting kind of incubator spaces out of out of uh buildings that word maybe um you know not being used in their optimal way and unique things with the sculpture part q did the glasshouse right yes um i think that the the glasshouse was really a exciting one and one that we've found has been a uh an interesting opportunity to where we collaborate very closely with the the with the artist mark die on as well as the park designers weizmen freddie to develop the the designed for the glasshouse and um and then kinda create this very immersive experience that is very unexpected on but very welcoming and um kind of unexpected discovery in the middle of the park and that that sort of something that we we have focused on all of our projects and it's really about how we work to where there's this process where we go into something with a very open kind of exploratory process and with the client and the other project participants discover something new that none of us expected or new would exactly how would evolve you you know what you as you know when we met when i met you it was when you were on the board of the sea at our international film festival an resigned the the film center for them which is a very transforming it space for them it's their new home at seattle center and um.
